Riparian vegetation plays a fundamental role in alluvial channel evolution by modifying flow and sedimentation dynamics. To elucidate the roles of sediment supply, flow‐dependent transport capacity, and morphodynamic feedbacks on the evolution of emergent vegetation patches over a single hydrograph, we conducted two experiments with different reach‐scale sediment supplies: a high‐supply experiment (HSE) and low‐supply experiment (LSE). We measured flow velocities, bedload transport, and topographic changes around a full‐scale patch of live emergent willows in an outdoor laboratory flume. Erosion occurred in the patch‐adjacent channel areas irrespective of the sediment supply, whereas deposition within the patch interior was suppressed in the LSE and enhanced in the HSE. The magnitude of patch deposition in each experiment was controlled by the local sediment supply to the patch and local sediment mobility during each discharge in the hydrograph. The local sediment supply was affected by bed morphodynamics at the patch head, which modulated the reach‐scale sediment supply by redistributing the bedload in the channel. Sediment mobility within the patch was flow‐dependent and a function of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. For different discharges, the velocity in the patch changed proportionally with the freestream velocity; however, the turbulent kinetic energy was more sensitive, being elevated compared with the freestream during high flows and inhibited at low flows. Therefore, deposition and erosion within vegetation patches are not simply functions of the reach‐scale sediment supply or patch flow characteristics, as is often assumed, but additionally depend on the local sediment supply to the patch interior. However, in the laboratory, we identified the physical mechanisms influencing sediment deposition and erosion and their change over a natural flow regime to illustrate that the same full‐sized willow patch can either enhance or reduce sediment deposition within the patch interior relative to the same channel without vegetation. The amount of sediment deposited in the vegetation patch depended on the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of the water, which changed as the flow decreased. Additionally, the presence of a single vegetation patch fundamentally changed the character of the channel from depositional to erosional near the patch, indicating that more erosion occurred in adjacent channels than deposition within the patch. Deposition and erosion of the bed were also influenced by the amount of sediment supplied to the channel from upstream. This reach‐scale sediment supply was modified by a sediment mound that formed at the upstream end of the patch during high sediment supply to the channel. The mound redistributed the sediment transport within the channel and vegetation patch, revealing another physical mechanism influencing the spatial and temporal variability of bedload transport in vegetated channels. Past experimental work found that rill erosion occurs mainly during rill formation in response to feedback between rill-flow hydraulics and rill-bed roughness, and that this feedback mechanism shapes rill beds into a succession of step-pool units that self-regulates sediment transport capacity of established rills. The search for clear regularities in the spatial distribution of step-pool units has been stymied by experimental rill-bed profiles exhibiting irregular fluctuating patterns of qualitative behavior. We hypothesized that the succession of step-pool units is governed by nonlinear-deterministic dynamics, which would explain observed irregular fluctuations. We tested this hypothesis with nonlinear time series analysis to reverse-engineer (reconstruct) state-space dynamics from fifteen experimental rill-bed profiles analyzed in previous work. Our results support this hypothesis for rill-bed profiles generated both in a controlled lab (flume) setting and in an in-situ hillside setting. The results provide experimental evidence that rill morphology is shaped endogenously by internal nonlinear hydrologic and soil processes rather than stochastically forced; and set a benchmark guiding specification and testing of new theoretical framings of rill-bed roughness in soil-erosion modeling. Coupled two-dimensional (2D) morphodynamic and bank erosion models are gaining attentions in recent years. It has been shown that such models have advantages over the one-dimensional (1D) modeling approaches. In this paper, a previous 2D bank erosion model with the moving mesh method is extended to include the fixed mesh approach. Further, two practical streams with differing complexity are simulated to demonstrate the extended model. Both the moving mesh and fixed mesh methods are used in the modeling. The model consists of two components: a 2D flow and mobile-bed model for vertical bed changes and hydraulic forces acting on a bank and a lateral bank retreat model. The 2D vertical model and the lateral bank erosion model are coupled together spatially and temporally through a special procedure and a common mesh. With the experiences gained with practical stream modeling, the modeling procedure and key model input parameters are described. The study shows that the moving and fixed mesh methods together make the extended bank erosion model numerically robust and capable of predicting both the vertical bed changes and the lateral stream bank erosion for complex streams. Each individual method, however, has its own limitations in terms of model accuracy and efficiency. The moving mesh works well if bank retreat is relatively small, e.g., less than one channel width, and produces more accurate results than the fixed mesh method. The fixed mesh may be needed for ensuring numerical stability if a bank may be subject to significant retreat (e.g., more than one channel width). The fixed mesh method, however, is less accurate than the moving mesh method and a much refined mesh may be needed. The aim of the paper was to create a hydraulic model to simulate the erosion of the Danube riverbed and the creation and use of the model with data obtained from the field. Measurements and sampling were conducted in-situ in order to build a model as close to the actual situation in the field. The activities in the field were the following: measurements using ADCP technology, dragged sediments sampling, suspended sediments sampling, topographic measurements. Considering that a dam fitted with a groove was constructed on the Danube riverbed at the Epuraşu Branch entrance, the specific objectives of the paper consist in determining the parameters of hydrodynamic and sediment transport through numerical simulation, in the following circumstances: 1. dam with closed groove; 2. dam with open groove. In assessing morphological changes that may occur in the Epuraşu Branch, the HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling software was used. The concept and estimation of sediment transport capacity of overland flows are pivotal to soil erosion, sediment transport, and deposition modeling. There is a limited understanding of the effect of high sediment concentration on the transport capacity of overland flow, although sediments in suspension are known to affect turbulent mixing and settling velocity in rivers. A new functional relationship between a dimensionless parameter involving stream power and settling velocity and the volumetric concentration at the transport limit was developed using a set of flume experiments with slope up to 46.6%, unit discharge up to 50 cm² · s-1, median particle size of 0.326 mm, and sediment concentration up to 1,140 kg · m-1. The new relationship has two theoretical limits on sediment concentration at the transport limit. Under low flow conditions, the sediment concentration is limited by the available stream power. At high stream power, the sediment concentration is limited by the space available in flow to accommodate sediments in motion. As a predictor of the sediment concentration at the transport limit, the new relationship worked very well with the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency of 0.95 and was shown to be superior to empirical relationships based on stream power and other commonly used predictors of the transport capacity for rivers. The paper also shows that formulas for the transport capacity which have been validated and widely used for rivers with high sediment concentrations are inaccurate and should not be used to predict the transport capacity of overland flow. Recent developments in complex systems analysis have led to new techniques for detecting causal relationships using relatively short time series, on the order of 30 sequential observations. Although many ecological observation series are even shorter, perhaps fewer than ten sequential observations, these shorter time series are often highly replicated in space (i.e., plot replication). Here, we combine the existing techniques of convergent cross mapping (CCM) and dewdrop regression to build a novel test of causal relations that leverages spatial replication, which we call multispatial CCM. Using examples from simulated and real-world ecological data, we test the ability of multispatial CCM to detect causal relationships between processes. We find that multispatial CCM successfully detects causal relationships with as few as five sequential observations, even in the presence of process noise and observation error. Our results suggest that this technique may constitute a useful test for causality in systems where experiments are difficult to perform and long time series are not available. Complex relationships between stream functions and processes make evaluation of stream modification projects difficult. Informed by vague objectives and minimal monitoring data, post-construction project evaluations can often be a subjective attribution of success or failure. This article provides a simple framework to rapidly describe the degree of damage in stream modification projects performed in constrained settings. Based on widely accepted evaluations of physical habitat quality and stream stability, the damage states framework describes a continuum of damage in multiple categories that relate natural stream functions to the often desired state of static equilibrium. Given that channel form is closely related to stream function, it follows that changes to the channel form result in changes in function. The damage states focus on damage to flow hydraulics, sediment transport and channel equilibrium, hydraulic, and geomorphic parameters that describe basic stream functioning and support higher level functions in the modified channel. This paper presents experimental and numerical studies of the evolution of dam-break driven wave on a horizontal smooth bed and its implication to sediment transport. Laboratory experiments are carried out using high-speed video images in order to obtain the spatio-temporal evolution of the free surface. Furthermore, a numerical model based on the two-dimensional-vertical Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, with ak−ϵ turbulence closure and a volume of fluid method, is validated with the laboratory observations. The numerical model is shown to accurately predict the measured free-surface profiles, the wave-front velocities, as well as the impingement location of the first forward breaking jet. In order to bring more insight on dam-break wave induced erosion, the numerical model is extended for simulating suspended sediment transport. Model results suggest that the maximum bed-erosion occurs at the gate location and it moves farther downstream depending on the ratio between the downstream and the upstream water depth. A numerical model for simulation of embankment dams' gradual breaching because of overtopping, named embankments breach software (EBS), is introduced in this paper. The model solves the equations for the depth-averaged flow (modified for shallow water flow on steep slopes), the turbulence model, the sediment transport, and the bed elevation change in a coupled manner. An upwind cell center finite volume method is applied for developing the discrete form of the differential equations. A linearized scheme with second-order accuracy in space and explicit time integration on unstructured triangular meshes is utilized in this model. To simulate the flow over dry sloping surfaces of the embankment dam configuration, the developed model considers a powerful wetting and drying technique. Furthermore, the abilities of the model enhanced simulation of sudden bank failure of the breach channel because of the base erosion and transport of the failed solid material. Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive review of sediment transport in ice-affected rivers by documenting a range of unique ice and sediment transport processes. In cold regions during winter, high sediment transport rates can occur under specific ice conditions, even if the channel discharge is low. River ice directly displaces and carries sediment, and some ice processes can move boulder-sized sediment, contributing to the sculpting of river channels in ways water alone could not. Special attention is directed to the ice breakup period, during which most dynamic ice processes take place and when sediment supply to river channels is maximized. Also discussed are the time and space scales over which ice processes affect sediment transport. Moreover, a global framework that describes the interconnectivity of climate, river discharge, channel morphology, in-stream hydraulics, and sediment transport response is proposed. Within this framework, ice processes are given a central function, as they influence and are affected by sediment transport, hydrological conditions, and channel morphology. A segment of this work reviews and explores the interconnectivity between river ice processes and river discharge as well as between river ice processes and channel morphology. The proposed framework represents a practical tool for a wide range of cold region river scientists and engineers, particularly in light of climate change. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Sediment transport capacity is a key concept in determining rates of detachment and deposition in process-based erosion models, yet limited studies have been conducted on steep slopes. We investigated the effects of sediment size on transport capacity of overland flow in a flume. Unit flow discharge ranged from 0.66 to 5.26 × 10-3 m2 s-1, and slope gradient varied from 8.7 to 42.3%. Five sediment size classes (median diameter, d 50, of 0.10, 0.22, 0.41, 0.69 and 1.16 mm) were used. Sediment size was inversely related to transport capacity. The ratios of average transport capacity of the finest class to those of the 0.22, 0.41, 0.69 and 1.16 mm classes were 1.09, 1.30, 1.55 and 1.92, respectively. Sediment transport capacity increased as a power function of flow discharge and slope gradient (R2 = 0.98), shear stress (R2 = 0.95), stream power (R2 = 0.94), or unit stream power (R2 = 0.76). Transport capacity generally decreased as a power function of sediment size (exponent = −0.35). Shear stress and stream power predicted transport capacity better than unit stream power on steep slopes when transport capacity was <7 kg m-1 s-1. Sediment transport capacity increased linearly with mean flow velocity. Critical or threshold velocity increased as a power function of sediment size (R2 = 0.93). Further studies with fine soil particles are needed to quantify the effects of sediment size on transport capacity of overland flow on steep slopes. Abstract: In order to assess the extent of sediment connectivity between uplands and lowlands and to quantify the processes of in-channel deposition and remobilization, measurements of suspended sediment fluxes were conducted in a nested rural catchment of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Data were collected over one year at three upland sites (3 to 12km2) and two downstream stations (390–630km2). Our results show that a structural discontinuity in the catchment (i.e. abrupt slope decrease at the junction between piedmonts and the alluvial plain from 2 to 10% to<0.1%) could be compensated by functional continuity during floods. Direct conveyance of fine sediment to the outlet occurred when a high stream transport capacity was reached. Erosion of the streambed was observed on various occasions and accounted for up to 50% of the flux leaving the catchment during one event. Conversely, temporary in-channel storage was apparent on other occasions, amounting to up to 52% of the flux recorded upstream during one storm. These two distinct behaviours were approximately equally distributed along the rainy season and strongly driven by the extent of coupling between surface and subsurface water. This work indeed highlights the role of baseflow spatial variations in determining the extent of lowland sediment conveyance. Riverbed erosional processes occurred when large differences in pre-event baseflow values (i.e. at least a twofold longitudinal increase) were observed between the 5-km distant lowland stations. Transport capacity of overland flow is related to sediment particle size. The WEPP (Water Erosion Prediction Project) model considers soil particle size in the sediment transport capacity equation; however, the equation does not work well for steep slopes. This study introduces sediment particle size into the determination of transport capacity on steep slopes by quantifying the relationship between sediment particle size and transport coefficient using the modified sediment transport capacity equation for steep slopes from the WEPP model. The relationship is based on the measured sediment transport coefficient associated with different sediment particle sizes in a hydraulic flume. The experiment used five sediment particle sizes (0.10, 0.22, 0.41, 0.69, and 1.16 mm), on five slopes (8.7%, 17,4%, 35.9%, 34.2%, and 42.3%), and with five flow rates (0.66, 1.32, 2.63, 3.95, and 5.26 X 10-3 m² s-1). The results showed that the sediment transport coefficient decreased significantly with increasing sediment size. The relationship was well described by a power function with transport coefficient as dependent variable and sediment particle size as independent variable. The sediment transport capacity equation could be modified using two independent terms: the sediment particle size power function, representing sediment properties, and flow shear stress, representing flow hydraulics. However, both the WEPP transport capacity equation and the modified equation did not predict the measured transport capacity well for steep slopes. Independent lithologic and structural controls in fluvial bedrock systems interact with coarse sediment transport processes to play a key role in bedrock incision processes such as abrasion. During a 3 year study on the Ocoee River in the Blue Ridge Province of the southern Appalachians, USA, we used painted tracer clasts to measure coarse sediment transport dynamics and address whether different scales of morphologic variability in bedrock channels lead to coarse sediment transport processes that differ from alluvial channels. At the reach scale, folded metasedimentary units are exposed in the channel bed and appear as linear bedrock ribs that vary in amplitude and orientation to flow. Under similar flow conditions for which size-dependent transport has been observed in alluvial channels (dimensionless Shields stress within 1.5-2.0 times the dimensionless critical shear stress), transport distance was a significant function of grain size where bedrock ribs were longitudinal to flow (Reach 1 and Reach 2). However, transport distance was not size dependent where bedrock ribs were oblique to flow (Reach 3). At different intrareach scales, the variables characterizing the local bedrock topography and sediment architecture were the best predictors of transport distance in all three reaches. Therefore, bed load transport processes may be influenced by bed forms in bedrock streams (bedrock ribs) but at potentially smaller scales than bed forms in alluvial channels. The strong influence of bedrock ribs on coarse sediment transport suggested that coarse sediment transport processes are controlled by different factors in bedrock channels only when bedrock ribs cross the channel at a high angle to the flow. Abstract: Overwash is an important process in barrier island evolution and its effects on the barrier morphology and sedimentology have been widely studied. However, the short-term sediment dynamics of overwash processes are not well known due to the lack of specific field studies. This paper presents field data that clarify the sedimentary dynamics of overwash processes on different washover morphologies, and determine the factors leading to non-storm overwash occurrence. Two fieldwork campaigns were undertaken during overwash events: GO.1 (winter of 2001), and GO.3 (winter of 2003), on western Barreta Island (Algarve, Portugal). The fieldwork included measurements of oceanographic conditions, overwash flows, morphology variations, mixing depth and sediment transport paths using tracers. The sediment dynamics induced by overwash varied according to the washover morphology (washover plain versus washover lobe). The sediment transport inside the washover plain was different for the two fieldwork campaigns (average mixing depth of 13cm for GO.1 and 6cm for GO.3); however it had similar main stages: Stage 1 — crest accretion, Stage 2 — onshore transport, and Stage 3 — dynamic equilibrium. The sediment transport inside the washover lobe can be characterised by one onshore flow stage, with erosion of the mouth and channel, and accretion on the washover fan. The main factors governing the occurrence of non-storm overwash in the study area were the combined occurrence of: (1) typical winter waves, (2) spring high tides, (3) washover crest below the high-tide level +2m, and (4) absence of prominent beach berm. This study proved that when the proper conditions are generated, non-storm overwash has sediment transport comparable to storm overwash and therefore may be significant for barrier evolution. Further field studies of overwash are needed, principally for more detailed overwash flow velocity measurements, high-frequency morphologic surveys, and barrier groundwater measurements. The paper presents a study on the influence of gravity on the incipient motion and the bed-load transport of sediment. The computation of critical bed-shear stress is revisited considering the balance of forces (hydrodynamic forces and submerged self-weight) acting on a solitary sediment particle lying on an arbitrary sloping bed. Modified effective bed-shear stress and the corresponding critical bed-shear stress, which are defined to assess the incipient motion of sediment in the direction of resultant force, are applied for the estimation of bed-load transport rate in the direction of resultant force. The sediment transport induced by the gravitational force, which is oblique to the direction of the drag force induced by flow, is incorporated into the bed-load transport equation. This modified model provides a reasonable prediction of the critical bed-shear stress and the bed-load transport rate. The model is validated by experimental data. It can be applied to steep slopes and can also avoid the problem of singularity that arises in numerically calculation of sediment transport rate. This paper presents results from two flume runs of an ongoing series examining flow structure, sediment transport and deposition in hydraulic jumps. It concludes in the presentation of a model for the development of sedimentary architecture, considered characteristic of a hydraulic jump over a non-eroding bed. In Run 1, a hydraulic jump was formed in sediment-free water over the solid plane sloping flume floor. Ultrasonic Doppler velocity profilers recorded the flow structure within the hydraulic jump in fine detail. Run 2 had identical initial flow conditions and a near-steady addition of sand, which formed beds with two distinct characteristics: a laterally extensive, basal, wedge-shaped massive sand bed overlain by cross-laminated sand beds. Each cross-laminated bed recorded the initiation and growth of a single surface feature, here defined as a hydraulic-jump unit bar. A small massive sand mound formed on the flume floor and grew upstream and downstream without migrating to form a unit bar. In the upstream portion of the unit bar, sand finer than the bulk load formed a set of laminae dipping upstream. This set passed downstream through the small volume of massive sand into a foreset, which was initially relatively coarse-grained and became finer-grained downstream. This downstream-fining coincided with cessation of the growth of the upstream-dipping cross-set. At intervals, a new bed feature developed above and upstream of the preceding hydraulic-jump unit bar and grew in the same way, with the foreset climbing the older unit bar. The composite architecture of the superimposed unit bars formed a fanning, climbing coset above the massive wedge, defined as one unit: a hydraulic-jump bar complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on the longitudinal distributions of river flood power using the methodology called combined automated flood, elevation and stream power (CAFES). The methodology which has international applicability for understanding basin-scale hydraulics, erosion, and sediment transport was used in quantifying downstream changes in a river flood power. The data from the NEXTMap Britain digital elevation model was used to calculate flood power, which were linked with the median annual flood. The problems encountered in testing Lawler's downstream change models including the difficulty in defining downstream trends, along with the results for five rivers are discussed.

This paper reports an experimental investigation on the velocity and turbulence characteristics in an evolving scour hole downstream of an apron due to submerged jets issuing from a sluice opening detected by an acoustic Doppler velocimeter. Experiments were carried out for the conditions of submerged jets, having submergence factors from 0.96 to 1.85 and jet Froude numbers from 2.58 to 4.87, over sediment beds downstream of a rigid apron. The distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors, turbulence intensities, and Reynolds stress at different streamwise distances are plotted for the conditions of initial flat bed, intermediate scour holes, and equilibrium scour hole downstream of an apron. Vector plots of the flow field show that the rate of decay of the submerged jet velocity increases with an increase in scour hole dimension. The bed-shear stresses are determined from the Reynolds stress distributions. The flow characteristics in evolving scour holes are analyzed in the context of self-preservation, growth of the length scale, and decay of the velocity and turbulence characteristics scales. Analytical predictions of numerical errors in method of characteristics analyses using time-line interpolation in a rectangular grid are obtained for (1) both time-line and space-line interpolation and (2) both rectangular and diamond grids. Amplitude and frequency errors are investigated for each of these four cases using purpose-developed polynomial transfer matrices. Both semiinfinite and finite pipes are investigated. The time-line analysis permits reach back in time and the space-line analysis permits reach out in space. A common definition is adopted for the Courant number in the four cases and it is shown why stability can be achieved in reach-out analyses with Courant numbers greater than 1. In contrast with most work on error estimation, the predicted errors are obtained analytically, not numerically. This is made possible by restricting the analysis to special, but important, cases such as liquid-filled pipes in which the waves may be assumed to propagate at constant speed. Furthermore, the development is restricted to inviscid flows, thereby enabling interpolation errors to be assessed in the absence of complicating influences of discretization errors. In contrast with the latter, it is found that interpolation errors are more sensitive to the shape of numerical grids (i.e., Courant number and rectangular versus diamond grid) than to the size of the numerical time step. Experiments were conducted over uniform gravel bed materials to obtain 143 friction factor values under bed-load equilibrium flow conditions in an attempt to add to the scarce data available on slopes between 1 and 9% for Shields numbers between 0.08 and 0.29. Analyses showed that when only flows over flat beds are considered, a distinction must be made between flows with and without bed load. More particularly, fitting flow resistance equations indicated that the roughness parameter increases by a factor of 2.5 from clear water flow to intense bed-load transport. A robust computational model for simulating the long-term evolution of incised and restored or rehabilitated stream corridors is presented. The physically based model simulates the three main processes that shape incised streams: hydraulics, sediment transport, and streambed and bank adjustments. A generalized implicit Preissmann scheme is used for the spatial and temporal discretization of the flow governing equations to accommodate large time steps and cross sections spaced at irregular intervals. The solution method introduces several enhancements that increase its robustness, specifically to simulate flashy flows. Transport of cohesive or cohesionless graded bed material is based on a total-load concept, and suspended and bed load transport modes are accounted for through nonequilibrium effects. The model simulates channel width adjustment by hydraulic erosion and gravitational mass failure of heterogeneous bank material. The present paper focuses mainly on the treatment of streamflow hydraulics and evolution of graded streambeds, and reports simulations of published experiments on degrading and aggrading channels with graded bed material. Results of an experimental study on clear-water scour at submerged cylindrical obstacles (circular cylinders) in uniform bed sediments under steady flow are presented. The scour depths at submerged circular cylinders are compared with the scour depths at corresponding unsubmerged cylinders (extended above the free surface of flow) of the same diameters under similar flow and bed sediment conditions. The scour depth decreases with an increase in submergence ratio. A submergence factor is introduced to determine the scour depth at a submerged cylinder from the information of the scour depth at an unsubmerged cylinder of the same diameter. In addition, the flow fields along the upstream vertical plane of symmetry of unsubmerged and submerged cylinders are presented through vector plots, which reveal that the dimension and strength of the horseshoe vortex decreases with an increase in submergence ratio. Abstract: The paper presents (1) a semi-theoretical model for the computation of maximum clear-water scour depth below underwater pipelines in uniform sediments under steady flow and (2) an experimental investigation on the influence of upward seepage on clear-water scour depth below underwater pipelines. Based on the “image method” of the potential flow theory for the flow through the gap between a circular pipeline and the scoured bed, a theoretical model is presented for the computation of maximum scour depth below underwater pipelines in clear-water condition considering the wall correction. Also, a simple theoretical calculation, that involves Chiew''s (1991) [Chiew, Y.M., 1991. “Prediction of maximum scour depth at submarine pipelines.” J Hydraul Eng 117(4), 452–466] gap flow curve, is proposed to estimate the maximum scour depth considering the wall correction. The computed results agree satisfactorily with the experimental data. In addition, the potential predictors of the maximum scour depth given by different researchers are compared with the experimental data. The result of an experimental investigation on the scour depth below pipelines under the influence of upward seepage through the bed sediment is presented. In general, the scour depth below pipelines with upward seepage is smaller than that without seepage. The results of an experimental investigation of riprap stability at wing-wall abutments are reported. The aim of the experiments was the determination of the size of riprap stones necessary to resist shear failure by the flow. The results, which were obtained under a wide range of mobile-bed conditions, are compared with predictions of riprap stone size given by existing equations. Two existing methods, with the addition of suitable factors of safety, are shown to give stable stone size for riprap layers at wing-wall abutments under mobile-bed conditions. It is noted that consideration needs also to be given to filter protection, edge effects, and the effects of bed-form undermining in the design of such riprap layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article describes a study that compares the concentration of suspended sediment in two small streams in France to discharges. Both suspended sediment and discharges were measured at the outlets on a yearly and monthly basis, with flood and non-flood periods taken into account. Data revealed that the relationship between suspended sediment concentration and discharge varied greatly, leading to the conclusion that cattle trampling and hydraulic erosion of stream banks are the two chief causes of sediment accumulating in stream catchments.

Previous cellular automata models of surface water flow have been constructed to reflect steady, gradually-varied flow conditions. While these models are extremely important in showing the near-equilibrium forms that result from the interactions of water and boundary material, highly dynamic forms and processes require models that represent unsteady flow conditions. In order to simulate unsteady flow in a cellular model of surface water flow, the conservation of mass and the Manning's equations are coupled with an algorithm to delay the movement of water from one pixel to the next until the correct timing is reached. This approach yields highly realistic flood wave hydrographs when compared with flood observations in the Walnut Gulch Experiment Watershed. Coupling this unsteady flow model with simple laws of sediment erosion, transport, and deposition should allow event-based simulations of watershed and river channel geomorphologic change. The upward seepage through the bed sediment downstream of an apron of a sluice gate structure is a common occurrence due to afflux of the flow level between the upstream and downstream reaches of a sluice gate. The result of an experimental investigation on the characteristics of the scour hole and the flow-field downstream of an apron due to submerged jets under the influence of upward seepage through the bed sediment is presented. Experiments were run for the conditions of submerged jets, having submergence factors from 0.99 to 1.72 and jet Froude numbers from 3.15 to 4.87, over beds of sediments (median sizes=0.8, 1.86, and 3 mm) downstream of an apron under upward seepage velocities. The characteristic lengths of the scour hole determined from the scour profiles are: the maximum equilibrium scour depth, the horizontal distance of the location of maximum scour depth from the edge of the apron, the horizontal extent of the scour hole from the edge of the apron, the dune height, and the horizontal distance of the dune crest from the edge of the apron, all of which were found to increase with an increase in the seepage velocity. Using experimental results, the time variation of the scour depth is scaled by an exponential law, where the nondimensional time scale decreases linearly with an increase in the ratio of the seepage velocity to the issuing jet velocity. The flow field in the submerged jets over both the apron and within the scour hole was detected using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The vertical distributions of time-averaged velocities, turbulence intensities and Reynolds stress at different streamwise distances, and the horizontal distribution of bed-shear stress are plotted for the conditions of scour holes with and without upward seepage. Vector plots of the flow field show that the rate of decay of the submerged jet decreases with an increase in the seepage velocity. The flow characteristics in the scour holes are analyzed in the context of the influence of upward seepage velocity on the decay of the velocity and turbulence intensities and the growth of the boundary layer. An experimental study of scour countermeasures for wing-wall abutments under mobile-bed conditions is reported. The purpose of the study was to determine the required apron size to protect a wing-wall abutment from scour under mobile-bed conditions, for different flow depths, flow velocities, and apron placement level. Riprap and cable-tied block countermeasures were investigated. It was observed that scour at the abutment undermines the apron, causing the outer edge of the apron to settle. Scour at the abutment can be a combination of localized scour (i.e., contraction scour and local scour) and scour due to the troughs of the bed forms that migrate past the abutment, the latter being the focus of the study presented. As the flow depth and flow velocity are increased, the outer edge of the apron settles into the sand, to a depth proportional to the height of the bed forms developed in the flume. Localized scour may additionally influence the depth of settlement. When the apron width is increased, the depth to which the outer edge settles remains reasonably constant. When the apron is preburied below the average bed level, the settlement of the outer edge is less, but the depth of the outer edge of the apron below the average bed level is the same as for the corresponding apron placed on top of the bed. Riprap and cable-tied block aprons respond in different ways. Stones at the outer edge of riprap aprons tend to roll away from the abutment as they settle, pushing the erosion zone further away from the abutment. Conversely, because cable-tied block mats remain attached to the abutment, apron settlement allows the scour to occur closer to the abutment face. It is concluded that the scour at abutments under mobile-bed conditions is often governed by the size of the bed forms that pass the abutment. Therefore, the design of armored scour countermeasures for abutments under mobile-bed conditions should be based upon the largest expected bed forms, which can be predicted based on existing expressions, together with any effects of localized scour. This will enable the settlement of the outer edge of the apron to be determined, and the required apron width to be chosen, depending on the tolerable distance between the deepest scour and the abutment. An experimental study of flow-induced failure of cable-tied blocks is presented. The particular failure mechanism studied is overturning and rolling up of the leading edge of a cable-tied block mat. Individual blocks were investigated also. The block size, flow depth, and block (mat) protrusion above the surrounding bed were systematically varied. The results are presented in terms of the critical dimensionless shear stress θc for block (mat) failure. A relationship between θc, block size and block protrusion, and flow depth is given. The results of an experimental investigation on scour of noncohesive sediment beds (uniform and nonuniform sediments) downstream of an apron due to a submerged horizontal jet issuing from a sluice opening are presented. Attempts are made to explain the similarity existing in the scour process and profiles (including dune in the downstream of the scour hole). The scour profiles at different times follow a particular geometrical similarity and can be expressed by the combination of two polynomials. Using experimental scour depth at different times, the time variation of scour depth is scaled by an exponential law, where time scale increases linearly with densimetric Froude number. The equilibrium scour depth, related to the sediment size relative to the sluice opening, decreases with increase in sediment size and sluice opening. On the other hand, the equilibrium scour depth increases with increase in densimetric Froude number. The variation of equilibrium scour depth with tailwater depth indicates a critical tailwater depth corresponding to a minimum equilibrium scour depth. The effect of sediment gradation on scour depth is pronounced for nonuniform sediments, which reduce scour depth significantly due to formation of an armor layer, and therefore prompted study of the reduction of scour depth by a launching apron placed downstream of the rigid apron. The results show that the average reduction of scour depth by placing a launching apron was 39%, having a maximum of 57.3% and a minimum of 16.2%. The characteristic parameters affecting maximum equilibrium scour depth are identified based on the physical reasoning and dimensional analysis. An experimental study on the control of scour at vertical circular piles under monochromatic waves and a steady current is presented. The experiments on wave and steady currents were carried out under live-bed and clear-water regimes, respectively. In waves, splitter plate attached to the pile along the vertical plane of symmetry and threaded pile (helical wires or cables wrapped spirally on the pile to form threads) were found to be effective to reduce the scour depth. For the Keulegan–Carpenter numbers 6–100, the vortex shedding is the main mechanism of scour under waves. The splitter plate and threaded pile disrupt the vortex shedding. The average reduction of the scour depth by the splitter plate was 61.6%. For threaded piles, different combinations of cable and pile sizes were tested, and the best combination was found for a cable–pile diameter ratio equaling 0.75, in which average scour depth reduction was 51.1%. The average reductions of scour depths for other cable–pile diameter ratios of 0.33 and 0.5 were 43.2 and 48.1%, respectively. On the other hand, in a steady current, the threaded pile proved to be effective to control scour depth to a great extent. Cables wrapped spirally forming threads on the pile help to weaken the downflow and horseshoe vortex, which are the principal agents of scour under a steady current. The experimental results showed that the scour depth consistently decreases with an increase in cable diameter and the number of threads, and with a decrease in thread angle. The maximum reduction of scour depth observed was 46.3% by using a triple threaded pile having a thread angle of 15° and a cable–pile diameter ratio of 0.1. Experimental results on local scour in long contractions for uniform and nonuniform sediments (gravels and sands) under clear-water scour are presented. An emphasis was given to conduct the experiments on scour in long contractions for gravels. The findings of the experiments are used to describe the effects of various parameters (obtained from dimensional analysis) on equilibrium scour depth under clear-water scour. The equilibrium scour depth increases with decrease in opening ratio and with increase in sediment size for gravels. But the curves of scour depth versus sediment size have considerable sag at the transition of sand and gravel. The scour depth decreases with increase in densimetric Froude number, for larger opening ratios, and increases with increase in approaching flow depth at lower depths. However, it becomes independent of approaching flow depth at higher flow depths. The effect of sediment gradation on scour depth is pronounced for nonuniform sediments, which reduce scour depth significantly due to the formation of armor layer in the scour hole. Using the continuity and energy equations, a simple analytical model for the computation of clear-water scour depth in long contractions is developed with and without sidewall correction for contracted zone. The models agree satisfactorily with the present and other experimental data. Also, a new empirical equation of maximum equilibrium scour depth, which is based on the experimental data at the limiting stability of sediments in approaching channel under clear-water scour, is proposed. The potential predictors of the maximum equilibrium scour depth in long contractions are compared with the experimental data. A three-dimensional numerical model was used for calculating the velocity and bed level changes over time in a 90° bended channel. The numerical model solved the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions to compute the water flow and used the finite-volume method as the discretization scheme. The k-[variant_greek_epsilon] model predicted the turbulence, and the SIMPLE method computed the pressure. The suspended sediment transport was calculated by solving the convection diffusion equation and the bed load transport quantity was determined with an empirical formula. The model was enhanced with relations for the movement of sediment particles on steep side slopes in river bends. Located on a transversally sloping bed, a sediment particle has a lower critical shear stress than on a flat bed. Also, the direction of its movement deviates from the direction of the shear stress near the bed. These phenomenona are considered to play an important role in the morphodynamic process in sharp channel bends. This paper reviews sediment transport and channel morphology in small, forested streams in the Pacific Northwest region of North America to assess current knowledge of channel stability and morphology relevant to riparian management practices around small streams. Small channels are defined as ones in which morphology and hydraulics may be significantly influenced by individual clasts or wood materials in the channel. Such channels are headwater channels in close proximity to sediment sources, so they reflect a mix of hillslope and channel processes. Sediment inputs are derived directly from adjacent hillslopes and from the channel banks. Morphologically significant sediments move mainly as bed load, mainly at low intensity, and there is no standard method for measurement. The larger clastic and woody elements in the channel form persistent structures that trap significant volumes of sediment, reducing sediment transport in the short term and substantially increasing channel stability. The presence of such structures makes modeling of sediment flux in these channels – a potential substitute for measurement – difficult. Channel morphology is discussed, with some emphasis on wood related features. The problem of classifying small channels is reviewed, and it is recognized that useful classifications are purpose oriented. Reach scale and channel unit scale morphologies are categorized. A "disturbance cascade" is introduced to focus attention on sediment transfers through the slope channel system and to identify management practices that affect sediment dynamics and consequent channel morphology. A comparison of four methods for predicting the incipient motion conditions of a uniform sand bed is presented. The four methods are: (1) the Shields diagram, (2) an empirical approach, (3) a method derived from resolution of rotational forces, and (4) a simplified resolution of rotational forces with a variable lift force coefficient. The four methods are used to predict the incipient motion conditions for 97 experimental runs taken from seven independent experimental flume studies. The effectiveness of predicting depth averaged incipient motion velocity for each of the four methods are compared. The simplified resolution of rotational forces model (4) and Shields method (1) were most successful in predicting the incipient motion velocity [R2=0.77, 0.74 and root mean square error (RMSE)=0.18, 0.15, respectively]. The slope of line of best fit for plots illustrating predicted versus measured incipient motion velocity were similar (slope=0.63, 0.65, respectively), illustrating that both methods provide a similarly justifiable prediction of depth averaged incipient motion.
