Cho M. and Hassink R. Limits to locking-out through restructuring: the textile industry in Daegu, South Korea, Regional Studies. The restructuring of old industrial areas is a relatively new phenomenon in the newly industrializing countries of East Asia, such as South Korea. Of the few theoretical concepts that try to explain the decline of such old industrial areas, evolutionary economic geography, in general, and the lock-in concept, in particular, are promising ones. This paper shows that the impact of locally induced lock-ins can be regarded as relatively strong in the textile industry region of Daegu, South Korea, and that due to this strong lock-in, renewal has been relatively unsuccessful. Following the recent work of Gómez-Déniz and Pérez-Rodríguez (2014), this paper extends the results obtained there to the normal-exponential distribution with dependence. Accordingly, the main aim of the present paper is to enhance stochastic production frontier and stochastic cost frontier modelling by proposing a bivariate distribution for dependent errors which allows us to nest the classical models. Closed-form expressions for the error term and technical efficiency are provided. El proceso de envejecimiento en el que están inmersas las sociedades occidentales, entre ellas España, ha modificado la estructura demográfica. La población mayor de 65 años supera con creces a la población menor de 16 años. Ante esta nueva realidad se desarrollan y reclaman políticas específicas para responder a las demandas de este sector creciente de la población. Habitualmente, estas políticas giran en torno al aumento de la demanda de cuidado. Sin embargo, en este artículo se abordan otros paradigmas para la elaboración de políticas públicas para hacer frente al envejecimiento como el envejecimiento activo y el envejecimiento abierto e inclusivo. De esta manera, es posible apreciar como definiciones sesgadas sobre el proceso de envejecer generan soluciones limitadas a la actual composición por edades de la población. A través del análisis de caso de España se observa que la realidad es multiforme. Ni envejecer es sinónimo de carencia ni de llegada a “El Dorado”.

En consecuencia, el principal propósito de este artículo es mejorar el modelado de la frontera estocástica tanto de producción como de coste proponiendo para ello una distribución bivariante para errores dependientes que nos permitan encajar los modelos clásicos. Se obtienen las expresiones en forma cerrada para el término de error y la eficiencia técnica. Se ilustra la aplicabilidad del modelo propouesto usando datos reales existentes en la literatura econométrica.

In this paper, we introduce a Bayesian analysis to estimate the prevalence and performance test parameters of two diagnostic tests. We concentrated our interest in studies where the individuals with negative outcomes in both tests are not verified by a gold standard. Given that the screening tests are applied in the same individual we assume dependence between test results. Generally, to capture the possible existing dependence between test outcomes, it is assumed a binary covariance structure, but in this paper, as an alternative for this modeling, we consider the use of copula function structures. The posterior summaries of interest are obtained using standard MCMC (Markov Chain Monte Carlo) methods. We compare the results obtained with our approach with those obtained using binary covariance and assuming independence. We considerate two published medical data sets to illustrate the approach.En este articulo introducimos un análisis Bayesiano para estimar la prevalencia y los parámetros de desempeño de pruebas para diagnóstico clínico, con datos obtenidos bajo estudios de tamizaje que incluyen el uso de dos pruebas diagnósticas en los cuales, los individuos con resultado negativo en las dos pruebas no son confirmados con una prueba patrón de oro. Dado que las pruebas de tamizaje son aplicadas al mismo indivíduo, nosotros asumimos dependencia entre los resultados de las pruebas. Generalmente, para capturar la posible dependencia existente entre los resultados de las pruebas diagnósticas, se asume una estrutura de covarianza binaria, pero en este artículo, nosotros consideramos el uso de estructuras que pueden ser modaladas usando funciones cópula, como una alternativa al modelamiento de la dependencia. Las estadísticas a posteriori de interés son obtenidas usando métodos MCMC. Los resultados obtenidos usando nuestra aproximación son comparados con los obtenidos usando modelos que asumen estructura binária y con los obtenidos usando modelos bajo el supuesto de independencia entre resultados de las pruebas para diagnóstico clínico. Para ilustrar la aplicación del método y para hacer las comparaciones se usaron los datos de dos estudios publicados en la literatura.

O presente texto analisa a relação da política macroeconômica e o desenvolvimento econômico com seus condicionantes políticos, desde 1995 até os dias atuais (governos FHC, Lula e Dilma), por meio da abordagem da economia política, aplicando os conceitos de dominância financeira, dependência e bloco no poder. Ao adotar tal método, partiu-se do pressuposto de que a adoção de determinada política econômica é decorrência: i) dos condicionantes externos, atrelados, no caso brasileiro, à sua condição periférica; ii) dos condicionantes internos associados à interação e conflitos de interesses econômicos e políticos das frações de classe no bloco no poder e em seus desenlaces no Estado. O texto conclui que as mudanças recentes no bloco no poder, entre o final do governo Lula e início do governo Dilma, conferiram maior autonomia ao Estado, especialmente diante da fração bancário-financeira, até então hegemônica, o que abre espaço para a retomada das políticas de desenvolvimento.This paper analyzes the relationship between macroeconomic policy and economic development and the political constraints of that relationship from 1995 until present day ( Cardoso, Lula and Dilma Rousseff). This analysis relies on the political economy approach, applying the concepts of financial domination, dependence and power blocs. By virute of this method, we assume that the adoption of certain economic policy is the result of: i) the external constraints (which, in Brazil, are coupled with the country's status as a peripheral and dependent economy) and ii) the constraints associated with the internal interaction and conflicts of economic and political interests of class fractions in the power bloc and its influence on the State. The paper concludes that recent changes to the power bloc between the end of the Lula administration and the beginning of the Rousseff administration gave the government greater autonomy, particularly in relation to the banking and financial sector, which was the hegemonic fraction in the power bloc. This context favors the resumption of development policies.

Este artigo desenvolve uma nova abordagem sobre a antropologia e a história de fronteiras nacionais. Ele propõe uma tipologia e uma caracterização fenomenológica de duas formas de se atravessar a fronteira que surgiram paralelamente a uma nova relação de dependência econômica e política entre o México e os Estados Unidos da América no final do século XIX. Tais novas modalidades de se atravessar a fronteira envolvem o desenvolvimento de novos "cronótopos", ou seja, novas e concorrentes matrizes espaços-temporais que foram utilizadas para enquadrar a relação entre o México e os EUA. Este artigo analisa a qualidade, a natureza e o preço destas formas alternativas de historicidade por intermédio de uma análise detalhada de dois textos jornalísticos cruciais: a entrevista do General Porfírio Diaz por James Creelman (1908) e a reportagem de Kenneth Turner sobre a escravidão mexicana (1910).This paper develops a novel approach to anthropology and history of international borders. It proposes a typology and a phenomenological characterization of two kinds of border crossings that emerged alongside the new relationship of economic and political dependency that developed between México and the United States in the last quarter of the 19th century. The new border crossings involved the development of new 'chronotopes', in other words new and competing spatial-temporal matrices, used to frame the relationship between México and the United States. This paper analyzes the quality, nature and stakes of these alternative forms of historicity by way of a close case study of two pivotal journalistic texts: James Creelman's (1908) interview of General Porfírio Diaz, and John Kenneth Turner's (1910) reportage and exposé of Mexican slavery.

Cape Verde is a country where the production structure is weak, which makes it heavily dependent on imports of goods and commodities, especially food and fuel which represent two thirds of the national needs. This study aims to determine the degree of dependence between Cape Verdean and Portuguese inflation. Copula methodology will be adopted because it does not make any assumptions about the distribution of variables, and is able to capture the presence of non-linear association between the variables and also know the format of this relationship. This paper estimates a series of parametric copulas in order to find out which of them can best represent the dependency relationship between the variables in question. It were computed the dependence measures Spearman's Rho and Kendall's Tau and the results indicate that Cape Verde's inflation has a very weak dependence relationship with the Portuguese inflation. This paper analyses if the classic Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is able or not to accurately explain the e-buying intention of web users. This model is extended with the inclusion of Internet media dependency variable which improves its explanatory power. Due to the formative nature of dependency construct, analysis is developed through Partial Least Squares (PLS). Results based on a sample of 465 non purchasing web users show that TAM model accurately explains e-buying intention and that Internet dependency influences both attitude and buying intention. Ease of use and perceived usefulness reveal themselves like key variables to explain both e-buying intention and Internet dependency. Managerial implications are finally derived from these results. The ‘care crisis’ has been a recurrent theme in feminist debates and academic studies on care, social policy and citizenship. The care deficit is particularly severe is the ageing societies of Southern Europe. In Spain, familialism prevails in eldercare. This implies a permanent trust on the family, on its intergenerational solidarity and on its gender structure as provider of help and support. At the same time, studies show that migrant domestic workers increasingly meet the care needs of older dependent people. The globalization of care tends to perpetuate the gendered nature of care since the caring tasks remain in women’s hands. Scrutinizing eldercare policies is an important issue for feminist and social policy research given the dominance of women in care-giving and care work and the gendered coding of care work. By means a discourse-oriented policy analysis this paper examines key policy texts related to the reforms of Dependent Care and of Household Employment. The article demonstrates that public policy has an important role in constructing care work(ers); public policy shapes the positions of those doing care-giving work, the valuation of their work, and their social citizenship status. As such, they vitally shape gendered power relations. While family carers and domestic workers are constructed very differently, in common for these two categories of carers is that they perform undervalued work. The findings are discussed in the light of the theoretical conceptualization of recognition and its links to redistribution.

New societies require social polities based upon renewed ethical values. We are witnessing the regeneration of the ethical models that nourish social policy in a more inclusive manner, being more acquiescent with diversity than are the classical social contract and justice theories. This paper examines the regeneration of these ethical foundations from contemporary paradigms of thought, such as Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen’s, in contrast to the ones proposed by Rawls and contractarianism. Special focus is put on the problem of dependency in our societies. The conclusions drawn advocate for an inclusive social contract that embraces the diversity of human functionings and capabilities. This work also discusses the reasons why a regeneration of ethical models shaping the theories of justice, which are the core of our social order, is essential.

Current technological developments and policy support for active aging have led the European institutions to promote technological care for elderly dependents, since it is believed that they save money to the health systems and promotes the independence of the older people. This paper presents a critical analysis of these assumptions and reflects on the expected real impact of this phenomenon. The analysis considers that a high penetration of this technology is very unlikely, while it detects potential inequalities in its use. Techno-care such as it is known today does not allow the full autonomy of the dependents, or their caregivers, they are only an aid. Therefore, the hypothetical savings for the health systems are questionable. The empirical basis of this analysis comes from a sociological research on Parkinson’s patients in Spain.

Some people cannot buy products without first touching them, believing that doing so will create more assurance and information and reduce uncertainty. The international consumer marketing literature suggests an instrument to measure consumers' necessity for pohysical contact, called Need for Touch (NFT). This paper analyzes whether the Need for Touch structure is empirically consistent. Based on a literature review, we suggest six hypotheses in order to assess the nomological, convergent, and discriminant validity of the phenomenon. Departing from these, data supported four assumptions in the predicted direction. Need for Touch was associated with Need for Input and with Need for Cognition. Need for Touch was not associated with traditional marketing channels. The results also showed the dual characterization of Need for Touch as a bi-dimensional construct. The moderator effect indicated that when the consumer has a higher (vs. lower) Need for Touch autotelic score, the experiential motivation for shopping played a more (vs. less) important role in impulsive motivation. Our Study 3 supports the NFT structure and shows new associations with the need for unique products and dependent decisions.

The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa has jurisdiction over the care of elderly dependents in the territory. The implementation and management of specialized services in this sector in collaboration with social initiatives is one of its foundations. This article describes the public-private partnerships in the province of Gipuzkoa and tests the potential of the partnership model as a tool for adaptation of public administration to new needs arising from increased life expectancy in the population. La puesta en marcha y gestión de los servicios especializados en este sector tiene como uno de sus fundamentos la colaboración con la iniciativa social. Este trabajo analiza los costes de los cuidados de larga duración (CLD) ligados a los individuos en situación de dependencia. El coste económico unitario de los servicios de cuidados de larga duración está relacionado con el tiempo esperado de necesidad de la atención y la intensidad de los servicios requeridos. Se ha estimado el coste individual esperado en CLD, desde el momento en que se inicia la dependencia, para la población española mayor de 65 años y separadamente para los hombres y las mujeres. Los datos utilizados corresponden a las dos grandes operaciones estadísticas sobre discapacidad y dependencia llevadas a cabo por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) en 1999 y en 2008. También se han utilizado las tablas de mortalidad del INE y, con ellas, se han creado escenarios realistas para la longevidad. La posibilidad de reproducir el análisis para los años 1999 y 2008 ha permitido la comparación entre ambos años, así como el análisis de la tendencia registrada en la última década por la longevidad, la prevalencia de la dependencia y los costes esperados. Finalmente, hemos analizado, por un lado, el efecto del incremento de la esperanza de vida y de la prevalencia de la dependencia y, por otro, el efecto de la inflación sobre la evolución de los costes de los cuidados de larga duración. || This paper analyzes the cost of long-term care (LTC) associated to individuals in dependence situation. The economic cost of care per unit of service is linked to the expected time of needed care and the intensity of required services. We have estimated the expected lifetime cost of LTC in dependence for individuals aged 65 years and above. Calculations have been made separately for men and women. The estimations have been done for year 1999 and 2008, respectively, using data from the two oficial surveys carried out by the Spanish Institute of Statistics (INE). Oficial mortality records and life table trends were used to create realistic scenarios for longevity. We have made comparisons between 1999 and 2008 results, and we have also analysed the last decade trends for longevity, for prevalence of dependence, and for the expected costs of long-term care. We have studied the effects on the evolution of the costs of long-term care due to increasing in longevity and prevalence of dependence and, finally, and separately, we analyzed the effect of the inflation.

Este trabalho procura discutir as possibilidades de desenvolvimento na periferia da economia mundial, enfatizando dois aspectos. Em primeiro lugar, observa-se que as políticas econômicas neoliberais e a reestruturação produtiva foram formas encontradas pelo capital para responder à sua própria crise dos anos 1970, e que essas formas aprofundaram a condição de dependência das economias periféricas dentro da lógica mundial de acumulação capitalista. Em segundo lugar, constata-se que a única maneira de desenvolvimento capitalista na periferia, tendo em vista o aprofundamento da dependência, é a superexploração da força de trabalho. Por fim, argumenta-se que as alternativas para a periferia passam pela redução dessa superexploração da força de trabalho e/ou da luta contra a própria exploração capitalista da força de trabalho como forma de extração de excedente.This paper aims to discuss the possibilities of development in the periphery of the world economy emphasizing two points. Firstly, there is that the neoliberal economic policies and productive restructuring were forms found by capital to respond to its own crisis of 70's, and that these forms deepened the condition of dependency of peripheral economies within the logic of global capitalist accumulation. Secondly, it appears that the only way of capitalist development in the periphery, with a view to deepening dependence, is the superexploitation of labor force. Finally, it is argued that the alternatives to the periphery are the reduction of superexploitation of labor force and/or the fight against the capitalist exploitation of the labor force as a form of extraction of surplus.
