In this paper an approach for analysing the potential for implementation of different technology pathways for the European pulp and paper industry (PPI) is presented. The approach is based on detailed technical research and aggregates the knowledge from previous studies to incorporate the whole European PPI. Thus, the potential for different technology pathways can be estimated on a European level whilst still considering important characteristics of individual mills. The usefulness of the approach was exemplified by applying it to a case study of the potential for introduction of carbon capture and storage (CCS) within the European PPI. The results from the case study show that for the European PPI, CCS has an up-hill road in order to be a viable, large scale alternative for reduction of CO2 emissions. If CCS is to be introduced in large scale within the European PPI, large biomass-based point sources of CO2 emissions need to be included when planning for CCS infrastructure and also the infrastructure needs to be built out for clusters emitting <20 MtCO2/yr. The Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) industry has announced an ambitious decarbonization roadmap to 2050 to keep its place as a reference product in the future market of building materials. AAC raw materials are contributing to a large share of the CO2 footprint of AAC and need to be carefully assessed. Lime is today an essential raw material in the production of AAC and will remain so in the future as, unlike some other raw materials, it cannot be interchanged by a less carbon‐intensive alternative. Lime is essential in the formation of Tobermorite and provides the alkaline conditions required for the formation of the hydrogen bubbles structuring the mineral foam. Lime is produced by the calcination of limestone (CaCO3) releasing carbon dioxide (CO2). The CO2 footprint of lime is considerable, and the production process is considered hard‐to‐abate. Today roughly two‐thirds of the CO2 is inherent to the production process while only one‐third of the CO2 is due to the required fuel. Lhoist has developed a Carbon Action 2030 plan with a range of low‐carbon and carbon‐neutral lime solutions. The approach is based on the principle of three pillars: Avoiding, Reducing, and Compensating with a pipeline of effective carbon reduction initiatives behind each pillar. The paper will provide a status update on the key projects in Belgium, France, and Germany. The transformation to low‐carbon lime has triggered projects in energy improvement, sustainable fuels, the usage of hydrogen, kiln electrification, oxyfuel kilns, carbon capture, and storage as well as CO2 utilization. Once the CO2 is captured during the production of lime, the carbonation of the AAC will lead to a carbon‐negative building material. Our roadmap will position Lhoist as a preferred partner for the AAC industry in the future. Featured Application: This work suggests that horizontal injectors are a safe way to keep CO2 trapped in the storage site and reduce/prevent any unexpected event associated with leakage through the caprock since the horizontal well minimizes or avoids CO2 contact with the caprock. This study used numerical simulations of CO2 storage to identify the benefits of horizontal wells for geological carbon storage, such as enhancing CO2 trapped in porous media due to relative permeability and capillary hysteresis. Two injection schemes were tested: one using a vertical injector and the other employing a horizontal well. The results revealed two main findings. Firstly, the horizontal injection well effectively prevented or minimized CO2 penetration into the caprock across various sensitivity scenarios and over a thousand years of CO2 redistribution. Secondly, horizontal wells provided a safe approach to trapping CO2, increasing its entrapment as a residual phase by up to 19% within the storage site. This, in turn, reduced or prevented any unexpected events associated with CO2 leakage through the caprock. Additionally, the paper proposes a practical method for designing the optimal length of a horizontal well. This method considers a combination of two parameters: the additional CO2 that can be trapped using a horizontal well and the gravity number. In the case of the reservoir model of this study, a horizontal branch with a length of 2000 m was found to be the most effective design in enhancing CO2 entrapment and reducing CO2 buoyancy. An equation of state (EOS) of CH4-N2 fluid mixtures in terms of Helmholtz free energy has been developed by using four mixing parameters, which can reproduce the pressure-volume-temperature-composition (PVTx) and vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties of CH4-N2 fluid mixtures. The average absolute deviation of all the PVTx data available up to 673.15 K and 1380 bar from this EOS is 0.38%. Combining this EOS of CH4-N2 fluid mixtures and the EOS of CH4-CO2 and CO2-N2 fluid mixtures in our previous work, an EOS of CO2-CH4-N2 fluid mixtures has been developed, which is named ZMS EOS. The ZMS EOS can calculate all thermodynamic properties of ternary CO2-CH4-N2 fluid mixtures and the average absolute deviation of the PVTx data from the ZMS EOS is 0.40% for the CO2-CH4-N2 system. The ZMS EOS can be applied to calculate excess enthalpies of CO2-CH4-N2 fluid mixtures, predict the solubility of CO2-CH4-N2 fluid mixtures in brine and water, and quantitatively estimate the impact of the impurities (CH4 and N2) on the CO2 storage capacity in the CO2 capture and storage (CCS) processes. The ZMS EOS can also be applied to calculate the isochores of CO2-CH4-N2 system in the studies of fluid inclusions. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive history matching study for the FluidFlower benchmark model. This benchmark was prepared and organized by the University of Bergen, the University of Stuttgart, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for promoting understanding of the complex physics of geological carbon storage (GCS) through in-house experiments and numerical simulations. This paper synthesizes the experiences of history matching the benchmark data encountered by the Delft-DARTS and CSIRO participants. History matching is first performed based on a low-dimensional-zonated structured model using a simple Poisson-like solver. The permeability of six facies and two faults is inferred in this stage to match the digitized concentration data. The history matching is then further enhanced to richer spatial and physical models to capture the spatial variation of permeability and buoyancy effects, using an unstructured grid. Efficient adjoint methods are used to evaluate the gradient used in the optimization of data misfits or equivalent Bayesian log-likelihoods. With efficient optimization methods available for both maximum a posteriori model inference and Randomized Maximum Likelihood methods for model uncertainty, we perform history matching using both binary and continuous concentration observations. The results show that the tracer plumes in the enriched model match the experimental plumes more accurately compared with the results from the parsimonious-zonated model. The history matching results based on the concentration observations provide more similar plume shapes compared with the case based on the binary observations. The permeability difference between the model before and after history matching reveals that the tracer plume zone and the high permeable zone are the regions of high sensitivity in terms of data misfit between the model response and observations. Pipeline transport has emerged as the most cost-effective method for transporting CO 2 onshore. The CO 2 flow rate is a key factor driving transport costs, underscoring the need to understand the impact of flow rate variability in CO 2 pipeline networks on their design and economics. This paper presents an optimal pipeline design methodology for CO 2 pipelines operating under variable flow that considers the probability distribution of CO 2 flow rate and the pipeline length. The results imply that pipelines designed for optimal performance under variable flow rates often demand a higher level of overdesign compared to pipelines intended for steady-state conditions. Decision-makers must balance the trade-offs between pipeline oversizing and installing multiple pressure boosting stations, especially applicable to large transportation distances and projects of extended duration. The examination of different approaches to pipeline design reveals that a variable flow pipeline design based on mean flow rate is not recommended, because it is incapable of handling the maximum flow rate. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an important low‐carbon management technology used to reduce CO2 emissions with the captured anthropogenic CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This paper provides an overview and analysis of current issues related to CCS projects and CCS technologies. The paper also assesses risks and costs as well as policy, legal, and regulatory frameworks relevant for CCS and the major countries with CCS deployment. Currently, the few CCS projects in operation are mostly for EOR purposes. However, miscible CO2‐EOR in depleted oil and gas reservoirs appears to be the industry's first choice for CO2 sequestration and increasing oil production. Potential CO2 leakage is a major risk for pipelines and geological storage and a comprehensive monitoring program needs to be developed to ascertain its impact on pipeline material integrity, humans, and the environment. The cost of the CCS chain largely depends on the compression solvent for the synthesis gas or flue gas treatment for separation, heat rate, energy required for capture, capital costs of capture equipment, pipeline diameter, and flow capacity, and the homogeneity and permeability of the geological formations. An effective carbon pricing and cap‐and‐trade system as a part of national carbon policy is needed to achieve the goal of CCS. This paper finally discusses China's carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) systems and proposes a new CCUS‐LNG transportation process system for the coastal areas of China. Abstract: Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is an effective technology to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in China. In this paper, the authors considered storage opportunities offered by oil reservoirs and deep saline aquifers in the Jiyang Depression, in east China. Based on detailed geological analysis and assessment of CO2 storage suitability, the Dongying Sag and Linyi‐Shanghe areas of the Huimin Sag within the Jiyang Depression appear promising for CO2 storage. Following more detailed characterization, the second and third members of the Shahejie Formation located in these two areas appear the most promising for CO2 storage. Within the areas identified as having potential for storage, 55 primary and 62 secondary recommended storage units were defined, with a total theoretical capacity of 5.02 × 108 tonnes (t) CO2. • The damage of CO 2 transport infrastructure stems from the characteristics of working fluid and environment. • The development of damage is influenced by many factors like pressure, temperature, flow rate, impurities and materials. • Corrosion perforation, erosion, cracking, debonding and physical-chemical coupling accelerate damage. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), the bottom covering technology for environmental protection and energy transformation, plays a vital role in reducing CO 2 emissions and has become an international research hotspot. The safe operation of CO 2 transport infrastructure is crucial to ensure the smooth implementation of carbon reduction actions. However, the understanding of disasters in carbon transmission infrastructure is not comprehensive and profound enough since CCS is still developing, which leads to few engineering standards on disaster prevention and mitigation of CO 2 transport infrastructure. This paper provides detailed reviews, including the composition and characteristics of carbon transmission infrastructure, failure mechanisms. It is concluded that the characteristics of CO 2 transport infrastructure damage fundamentally stems from the working fluid and environment, and novelty pointed out that future research hotspots are damage under multi-field coupling, damage detection and monitoring, design to reduce damage and repair after damage. Conventional Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) operations use the direct injection of CO2 in a gaseous phase from the surface as a carbon carrier. Due to CO2 properties under reservoir conditions with lower density and viscosity than in situ brine, CO2 flux is mainly gravity-dominated. CO2 moves toward the top and accumulates below the top seal, thus reinforcing the risk of possible leakage to the surface through unexpected hydraulic paths (e.g., reactivated faults, fractures, and abandoned wells) or in sites without an effective sealing caprock. Considering the risks, the potential benefits of the interplay between CO2 and an aqueous solution of formate ions (HCOO¯) were evaluated when combined to control CO2 gravity segregation in porous media. Three combined strategies were evaluated and compared with those where either pure CO2 or a formate solution was injected. The first strategy consisted of a pre-flush of formate solution followed by continuous CO2 injection, and it was not effective in controlling the vertical propagation of the CO2 plume. However, the injection of a formate solution slug in a continuous or alternated way, simultaneously with the CO2 continuous injection, was effective in slowing down the vertical migration of the CO2 plume and keeping it permanently stationary deeper than the surface depth. The planned pilot CO2 storage Zar-3 is an oil field with a gas cap in the final production stage in the SE Czech Republic. It is composed of a dolomite Jurassic reservoir sealed by three different formations that differ significantly in lithology. Previous studies left open questions on the nature of pore space and connectivity and the quality of the seal in the future CO2 storage complex. Microscopic petrography of the reservoir suggests dolomitisation in shallow water followed by karstification and brecciation with fracture-correct-dominated porosity. The seal horizons have porosity limited to the micro- and nanoscales. The oil consists of significantly biodegraded black oil of Jurassic origin mixed with less biodegraded gasoline-range hydrocarbons. Biomarkers in the caprock bitumens trapped in nanopores show a genetic relationship to the reservoir oil. Gas in the not yet fully depleted gas cap of the field is of thermogenic origin with no contribution of microbial methane. The formation water has total dissolved solids typical of isolated brines not diluted by infiltrated fresh water. The geochemical characteristics of the storage system together with the fact that the initial oil column is about 105 m tall with another 150 m of gas cap suggest that the seals are efficient and the Zar-3 future storage complex is tight and safe. This paper proposes a pressure-monitoring method to warn any possible CO leakage by monitoring pressure change at the upper layer of storage reservoirs within injection wells. The monitoring method is tested with two problems under various scenarios. With a current pressure detection limit, the proposed pressure-monitoring technique can be widely applicable wherever a permeable upper formation exists above the CO storage reservoir and is effective even in offshore storage sites wherever conventional monitoring methods for onshore sites cannot be applied. The CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technology is since more than ten years considered one of the key options for the future climate change mitigation. This paper discusses the implications for the further development of CCS, particularly with respect to climate change policy in an international geopolitics context. The rationale for developing CCS should be the over-abundance of fossil fuel reserves (and resources) in a climate change context. From a geopolitical point, it can be argued that the most important outcome from the successful commercialisation of CCS will be that fossil fuel-dependent economies with large fossil fuel resources will find it easier to comply with stringent greenhouse gas reduction targets (i. e. to attach a price to CO2 emissions). This should be of great importance since, from a geopolitical view, the curbing on greenhouse gas emissions cannot be isolated from security of supply and economic competition between regions. Thus, successful application of CCS may moderate geopolitical risks related to regional differences in the possibilities and thereby willingness to comply with large emission cuts. In Europe, application of CCS will enhance security of supply by fuel diversification from continued use of coal, especially domestic lignite. Introduction of CCS will also make possible negative emissions when using biomass as a fuel, i. e. in so called Biomass Energy CCS (BECCS). Yet, the development of BECCS relies on the successful development of fossil fuelled CCS since BECCS in itself is unlikely to be sufficient for establishing a cost efficient CCS infrastructure for transport and storage and because BECCS does not solve the problem with the abundant resources of fossil fuels. Results from research and development of capture, transport and storage of CO2 indicate that the barriers for commercialization of CCS should not be technical. Instead, the main barriers for implementation of CCS seem to be how to reach public acceptance, to reduce cost and to establish a high enough price on CO2 emissions. Failure to implement CCS will require that the global community, including Europe, agrees to almost immediately to start phasing out the use of fossil fuels, an agreement which seems rather unlikely, especially considering the abundant coal reserves in developing economies such as China and India. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) links together technologies that separate carbon dioxide (CO2) from fixed point source emissions and transport it by pipeline to geologic reservoirs into which it is injected underground for long-term containment. Previously, models have been developed to minimize the cost of a CCS infrastructure network that captures a given amount of CO2. The CCS process can be costly, however, and large-scale implementation by industry will require government regulations and economic incentives. The incentives can price CO2 emissions through a tax or a cap-and-trade system. This paper extends the earlier mixed-integer linear programming model to endogenously determine the optimal quantity of CO2 to capture and optimize the various components of a CCS infrastructure network, given the price per tonne to emit CO2 into the atmosphere. The spatial decision support system first generates a candidate pipeline network and then minimizes the total cost of capturing, transporting, storing, or emitting CO2. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) can sequester atmospheric CO2, while producing electricity. The CO2 avoidance cost (CAC) is used to calculate the marginal cost of avoided CO2 emissions for BECCS as compared to other established energy technologies. A comparative analysis using four different reference-case power plants for CAC calculations is performed here to evaluate the CO2 avoidance cost of BECCS implementation. Results from this work demonstrate that BECCS can generate electricity at costs competitive with other neutral emissions technologies, while simultaneously removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Approximately 73% of current coal power plants are approaching retirement by the year 2035 in the U.S. After considering CO2 sequestered from the atmosphere and coal power plant CO2 emissions displaced by BECCS, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 1.4 billion tonnes per year in the U.S. alone at a cost of $88 to $116 per tonne of CO2 removed from the atmosphere, for 10% to 90% of available biomass used, respectively. CAC calculations in this paper indicate that BECCS can help the U.S. and other countries transition to a decarbonized electricity grid, as simulations presented in this paper predict that BECCS power plants operate at lower CACs than coal plants with CCS. This paper investigates various alternatives for the application of CCS at a cement plant which is one of the focus site for CCS deployment in Norway. A matrix consisting of nine CCS alternative chains is analysed in order to quantify cost reduction potentials across the CCS value chain based on an in-house techno-economic assessment methodology and tool called iCCS. In particular, the paper quantifies the strong cost reduction potential of second generation capture technologies and transport technology selection. CO 2 EOR is also identified to have a strong potential to reduce the overall CCS cost, however the cost benefits are strongly dependent on the oil value and the considered EOR injection period. The impact of the inclusion of CO 2 capture and conditioning in the cost of cement shows that public financial support will be required to ensure that the plant remain competitive under current cement market price. Finally, comparison of the full-scale capture versus part-scale capture shows, in this case, that the economies of scale are nearly compensated by the additional steam cost, therefore limiting the interest for full-scale implementation. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from power stations and industrial plants are seen as major contributors to what is known as the greenhouse gas (GHG) effect. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is one technology which may reduce the quantity of CO2 released into the atmosphere but development of CCS has slowed due to the absence of a viable financial model. Metering technology is a prerequisite in enabling realistic financial decisions to be taken; however, there is currently a paucity of research into the types of flowmeters which would be suitable for incorporating into CCS transportation chains. This paper reviews and summarizes existing metering technologies with a view to establishing their suitability for measuring high mass flowrate, supercritical CO2. Open channel, differential pressure, velocity measurement, direct mass measurement, and electrical, magnetic, thermal, sonic, and radiation technologies are all considered. Adsorption is considered as one of the most promising technologies for CCS. Gas adsorption involves the separation of gaseous components from flue gas using solid adsorbents. The gaseous component, adsorbate, is adsorbed from the gas phase on a solid material. Regarding CO2 adsorption, it is important to consider the parameters, that is the high sorption capacity, CO2 selectivity, regeneration and stability in multiple cycles. New directions for the development of adsorbents are focused on increasing their capacity ' for this purpose, amine impregnation is carried out. This paper presents a new approach to obtaining mesoporous material from fly ash and, based on this, a new physico-chemical adsorbent obtained by impregnation. Featured Application: The findings of this study offer support for the design of laboratory experiments, monitoring indicators, and the selection of parameters for history matching, ultimately enhancing the accuracy of databases of mineral reactions induced by CO2 injection. Numerical simulation is a commonly employed technique for studying carbon dioxide (CO2) storage processes in porous media, particularly saline aquifers. It enables the representation of diverse trapping mechanisms and the assessment of CO2 retention capacity within the subsurface. The intricate physicochemical phenomena involved necessitate the incorporation of multiphase flow, accurate depiction of fluid and rock properties, and their interactions. Among these factors, geochemical reaction rates and mechanisms are pivotal for successful CO2 trapping in carbonate reactive rocks. However, research on kinetic parameters and the influence of lithology on CO2 storage remains limited. This limitation is partly due to the challenges faced in laboratory experiments, where the time scale of the reactions and the lack of in situ conditions hinder accurate measurement of mineral reaction rates. This study employs proxy models constructed using response surfaces calibrated with simulation results to address uncertainties associated with geochemical reactions. Monte Carlo simulation is utilized to explore a broader range of parameters and identify influential factors affecting CO2 mineralization. The findings indicate that an open database containing kinetic parameters can support uncertainty assessment. Additionally, the proxy models effectively represent objective functions related to CO2 injectivity and mineralization, with calcite dissolution playing a predominant role. pH, calcite concentration, and CO2 injection rate significantly impact dolomite precipitation, while quartz content remains unaffected. The exponential increase in greenhouse gas emissions necessitates urgent measures to mitigate climate change impacts. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has emerged as a promising solution, capturing CO2 from industrial processes and storing it underground. However, CCS implementation poses risks that demand sophisticated modeling. This review focuses on the numerical modeling of CO2 plume dispersion from reservoir leaks during offshore CCS projects, including near- and far-field modeling and the comparison between Lagrangian and Eulerian modeling in particular. Near-field modeling examines CO2 behavior in jet plume, considering depth-related changes. Far-field modeling, employing Eulerian and Lagrangian methods, evaluates dispersion in marine environments. Case studies illustrate the complexity and uniqueness of CO2 dispersion events. The Lagrangian approach emphasizes gas bubble tracking, while the Eulerian approach employs fixed grid systems for detailed hydrodynamic modeling. Both approaches contribute valuable insights, with Eulerian models excelling in site-specific complexities and Lagrangian models offering computational efficiency. The potential for implementing carbon capture in Nordic industry sectors such as iron and steel production, cement and lime production, onshore and offshore oil and gas activities and pulp and paper production has been addressed. In Norway, much of the CO 2 is emitted from the oil and gas sector. In Denmark the power and heat production comprises the largest share while in Sweden and Finland biomass based industry such as power and heat production in CHP plants and pulp and paper production generates most of the CO 2 emissions. Iceland emits most CO 2 from metal industry, in particular non-ferrous metal production. In a Nordic perspective, the oil and gas industry has a high potential for implementation of CCS along with iron and steel production and cement production. Only cement production and pulp and paper production industries seem to have potential to decrease the CO 2 emissions close to zero. Capturing biogenic CO 2 from pulp and paper production could remove CO 2 from the atmosphere and create a carbon sink. Clustering of emission sources and implementing a joint CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) chain could possibly lower the CCS unit costs. Process alterations and industry specific solutions due to the implementation of CCS in industry could improve existing processes. However, the possibility for carbon leakage could decrease the competitiveness of Nordic industries significantly as long as there is no global agreement on reduction of CO 2 emissions. CCS (carbon capture and storage) is seen as a possibility to mitigate the global warming effect. The practical implementation of this technique faces a few challenges like safety issues. It is wondered if a massive release affecting the pipeline (may be the most vulnerable part of the CCS chain) would not lead to a disaster remembering what happened in Africa about 28 years ago (about Nyos Lake accident see Eos, 2009). Few experimental observations of large-scale CO2 releases have been made, and the physics and thermochemistry involved are not fully understood, even if considerable progress has been made theoretically.2 In this paper, the experimental techniques used to investigate this specific problem are described and illustrated with some key results extracted from various projects. Innovative techniques were employed to control the mass flowrate, blowdown, nearfield, and farfield dispersion in the atmosphere. A 2 m3 spherical vessel able to store up to 1000 kg of CO2 at a pressure above 8 MPa was used. Dense CO2 was allowed to spill out via a 50 mm pipe. The temperature, CO2 concentration, and density field of the outside cloud were monitored using thermocouples and concentration probes. In 2012, China stated to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that it is very vulnerable to the effects of climate change. While climate change is an environmental issue for China, more importantly it is a development issue. China intends to advance its efforts to address climate change through sustainable development. There is growing recognition and acceptance by the Chinese Central Government, that Carbon dioxide Capture Utilization and geological Storage (CCUS) will be part of that sustainable development, and that CCUS will play a prominent role in China's climate change abatement strategies, particularly in the medium to long term. China is making significant progress in its rollout of integrated CCUS projects. China has enacted a new environmental law which will come into effect on 1st January 2015. For the first time in China the environment will be as important as socio-economic development. Despite this progress, there are currently no national environmental regulations specifically for CCUS projects in China. This paper examines China's plans to develop and implement environmental requirements for CCUS projects, the policy objectives and drivers. The paper also describes the CO 2 monitoring program at China's first end to end CCS project near Ordos; monitoring at China's first CO 2 EOR development at the Jilin Oil Field; and a program to monitor CO 2 in shallow groundwater in western China. In this paper, we develop a model to analyze the economics of carbon capture, transport, and storage (CCTS) in the wake of expected rising CO prices. We present a scalable mixed integer, multiperiod, welfare-optimizing network model for Europe, called CCTS-Mod. The model incorporates endogenous decisions on carbon capture, pipeline and storage investments, as well as capture, flow and injection quantities based on given costs, CO prices, storage capacities, and point source emissions. Given full information about future costs of CCTS-technology, and CO prices, the model determines a cost minimizing strategy on whether to purchase CO certificates, or to abate the CO through investments into a CCTS-chain on a site by site basis. We apply the model to analyze different scenarios for the deployment of CCTS in Europe, e.g., under high and low CO prices, respectively. We find that beyond CO prices of €50 per t, CCTS can contribute to the decarbonization of Europe's industry sectors, as long as one assumes sufficient storage capacities (onshore and/or offshore). Illinois Basin - Decatur Project (IBDP) evaluates risk as the potential for negative impact to five project values: health and safety, environment, financial, research, and industry stewardship. Goals include monitoring one million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) injected about 2,150 meters below the ground surface. Risk treatments address ways in which any project value is at risk: for example, monitoring is designed to narrow parameter uncertainties that are important for system control, research, and public assurance. This paper details the risk management approach undertaken by the IBDP. Although approaches taken by other geologic storage projects are not compared here, some aspects of this project's risk management approach are judged to have been more effective (comprehensiveness; contribution to early-project organization), and some less effective (execution efficiency and information management). IBDP initially evaluated risk related to 123 Features, Events, and Processes (FEPs). Higher-risk FEPs provided the basis for writing 88 scenarios, which are the critical entities whose associated risks are tracked and treated. Individuals are assigned to organize and to confirm the execution of risk treatments. Maintaining risk at acceptable levels is a key aspect of performance management. In concept, risk is re-evaluated before significant new activities and decision points, and after significant new information is received. In practice, project workers are charged to maintain everyday awareness of risk levels in the scenarios already identified, and to be vigilant for the emergence of new risk-bearing scenarios. Coordinating the activities of multiple organizations presents special risks and challenges. For IBDP, the first risk workshop was a central element in the project kickoff meeting, initiating a risk management process whose application has been a key aspect of project success. Integrated risk management has influenced activities within all IBDP partner organizations, shaped internal and external communications, and contributed to smooth operation of the project's physical components. This article presents an in-depth study of CO2 injection monitoring in the Sleipner Field, focusing on the Utsira Formation. The research leverages advanced time-lapse inversion techniques and 4D seismic data analysis to enhance the accuracy of volume estimations and provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic behavior of the injected CO2 plume. The analysis encompasses cross correlation, time shift, predictability, and other key elements to yield robust insights into the reservoir's response to CO2 injection. Cross-correlation analysis results of 60% to 100% outside the injection zone and less than 50% within the injection zone reveal a distinct dissimilarity between the injection and non-injection zones, emphasizing phase, time, and frequency content changes due to CO2 injection. Time shifts are meticulously calibrated globally on a trace-by-trace basis, to account for shallow statics and velocity changes, improving the overall alignment of seismic data. Predictability analysis results of 0 to 0.34 within the injection zone and 0.45 to 0.96 at the background further reinforce the findings, highlighting high predictability values in areas untouched by production and markedly lower values within the injection zone. These results provide a measure of the reliability of the seismic data and its ability to reflect the subtle changes occurring in the reservoir. Crucially, the time-lapse inversion process excels in capturing the evolving state of the CO2 plume within the Utsira Formation. The seismic data reveals the migration and expansion of the plume over time and the dynamic nature of the reservoir's response to CO2 injection. Od pojawienia siê w 1990 r. w NATURE pierwszej publikacji dotyczącej mineralnej sekwestracji CO2, prowadzone są badania nad wykorzystaniem zjawiska wiązania ditlenku wêgla. W wyniku procesu ditlenek wêgla wiązany jest w stałej formie, co powoduje, że metoda ta jest bezpieczna ekologicznie. Dodatkowo w wyniku reakcji, która jest egzotermiczna, uwalnia siê ciepło, które może byæ potencjalnie wykorzystane. Proces ten może byæ stosowany jako ostatni etap tech-nologii CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage). Mineralna karbonatyzacja może byæ realizowana jako metoda in-situ i ex-situ. Mineralna sekwestracja proponowana jest i badana zarówno dla surowców mineralnych, jak i odpadów. W Polsce szczególnie interesującą opcją jest zastosowanie do wiązania CO2 na drodze mineralnej karbonatyzacji odpadów energetycznych o wysokiej zawartości CaO i ograniczonym wykorzystaniu gospodarczym. Do wiązania CO2 przeanalizowano oprócz odpadów energetycznych również żużle hutnicze i pyły z pieców cementowych. Drugą opcją prowadzenia mineralnej karbonatyzacji jest stosowanie surowców naturalnych. Do mineralnej sekwestracji CO2 mogąbyæ potencjalnie stosowane minerały, takie jak: oliwin, serpentyn czy talk. Artykuł jest wstêpną analizą możliwości wykorzystania tego typu surowców do wiązania CO2 w Polsce. Mineral carbonation is one possible approach to reducing anthropogenic CO2 emissions. This method involves the use of a natural phenomenon of carbon dioxide causing CO2 to bond with natural or concrete materials. Since the appearance of the first publication on the mineral sequestration of CO2 (in 1990 in Nature), research has been conducted into making use of the carbon dioxide bond. The objective was to bind carbon dioxide into a solid form, a method rendering it environmentally safe. In addition, as a result of the reaction being exothermic, heat is released which can potentially be used. This process may be employed as the last step of CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage). Mineral carbonation can be implemented as a method both in situ and ex situ. Mineral sequestration is proposed and has been tested for both minerals and waste. In Poland, a particularly interesting option is the binding of CO2 through mineral carbonation of energy waste with a high content of CaO and limited economic use. Binding of CO2 has also been analyzed with use of the metallurgical slag and dust from cement kilns. Another option for mineral carbonation is the use of natural raw materials. To bind CO2 through mineral carbonation, minerals such as olivine, serpentine, and talc can be applied. This paper is a preliminary analysis presenting the possibility of using mineral raw materials to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Abstract: The CO2CRC Otway Project is a significant carbon dioxide storage research and demonstration facility located in southwest Victoria. The project is researching carbon dioxide injection, transport, storage, monitoring and verification, with 65,000 tonnes stored since 2008 and ongoing research under way. The project supports research into CCS technologies at pore space, reservoir and regional scales. As Australia's first operational carbon dioxide storage project, the Otway Project is an important CCS technology demonstration for the nation, showing that carbon dioxide can be safely injected, stored and effectively monitored. It has informed Australia's CCS legislation and been the subject of much interest domestically and internationally. Stakeholder consultation has been a strong focus for the project since its inception and CO2CRC has been proactive in engaging with the community, regulators and government. The support of the local community, and in particular the landowners surrounding the project, has been vital in achieving social license for operations to date and for continuing research. The project began consulting with the community in 2005, three years before carbon dioxide injection. Following public and individual stakeholder meetings, independent social research was commissioned in 2006 to inform the consultation process, monitor community attitudes to the project and carbon dioxide storage, and provide the community with additional opportunities to comment on the project. This work provided valuable information on attitudes to climate change, levels of understanding of CCS, areas of community concern and preferred methods of communication. The resulting consultation program, informed by this research, has continued throughout the project's life with communication tools and strategies that include newsletters, a website, public meetings, Open Days and a dedicated community liaison officer. In 2011, CO2CRC commissioned a second round of social research, using a similar approach and methods to the initial study. Using qualitative and quantitative methods in the form of telephone surveys and focus groups, the study aimed to assess the project consultation program and to evaluate changes over time in community attitudes and perceptions of the project and CCS in general. Positive results from the second survey included a significant increase in awareness of the project and CCS in the local community, support for continuing research despite a drop in concerns over climate change, and improved relationships with the landowners hosting the project. Areas for improvement included a continuing lack of understanding of CCS technology among members of the wider community, a low profile for the project compared to the large and economically important gas facilities in the area and uncertainty surrounding the ongoing lifespan of the project. This paper presents in detail the results of the 2011 study and sets out the changes identified since 2006. The paper discusses how the interwoven aspects of community awareness, active engagement and technical understanding have helped in achieving acceptance of the project, but also highlights the difficulties of communicating highly technical concepts to a broad and dispersed population. The role of a dedicated, locally-based community liaison officer is discussed as an important method of direct consultation with landowners and a valuable two-way communication channel. The paper sets out the issues that emerged from the 2011 study, how the project is now addressing them and how the lessons learned may have application to other CCS projects. SUMMARY The assessment for realistic CO2-adsorption capacities of different rocks is important for understanding the processes associated with CO2 storage. This paper investigates the adsorption characteristics of rocks for CO2 (limestone, sandstone, marl, claystone, clay, siltstone and metamorphic rock) by using a gravimetric method. The measurements were performed at 21°C with pressures from 1 up to 4 MPa. Sandstone (and clay with sand/sandstone) showed the largest adsorption capacity at 21°C. The highest amount of in situ CO2 contents in measured samples was 21.4 kg/t. The CO2-adsorption capacities were lower than past results in different coal samples. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a very innovative and promising solution for greenhouse gases (GHG) reduction, i.e., capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) at its source and storing it indefinitely to avoid its release to the atmosphere. This paper investigates a set of key issues in the development of specific rules for the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to CCS. The following LCA-based information are addressed in this work: definition of service type, definition of functional unit, definition of system boundaries, choice of allocation rules, choice of selected Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) results or other selected parameters for description of environmental performance. From a communication perspective, the specific rules defined in this study have been developed coherently with the requirements of a type III environment label scheme, the International EPD® System, according to the ISO 14025 standard. In this paper, the methods of the integration of a supercritical coal-fired power plant with membrane CCS installation are shown. In addition to membrane modules, the CCS installation also consists of two vacuum pumps and two CO2 compressors. In this paper, the relationship between the auxiliary power required to drive these machines and the recoverable amount of heat is shown. This relationship is the reason for the integration of the supercritical coal unit with the CCS installation, which is used for cooling compressed CO2 in the CCS installation by use of condensate (or feed water) from the supercritical coal unit cycle. This cooling process causes both a reduction of the auxiliary power required to drive the compressors and vacuum pumps and increase of power ratio of a steam turbine. In this paper, the optimisation method for minimising the decrease of overall efficiency of the power plant connected with its integration with CCS installation is shown. This results in choosing the optimal pressure ratios in the applied compressors and vacuum pumps under the condition of sufficient heat transmission to the steam turbine cycle. In this paper, we analyze the relative importance and mutual behavior of two competing base-load electricity generation options that each are capable of contributing significantly to the abatement of global CO emissions: nuclear energy and coal-based power production complemented with CO capture and storage (CCS). We also investigate how, in scenarios developed with an integrated assessment model that simulates the economics of a climate-constrained world, the prospects for nuclear energy would change if exogenous limitations on the spread of nuclear technology were relaxed. Using the climate change economics model World Induced Technical Change Hybrid, we find that until 2050 the growth rates of nuclear electricity generation capacity would become comparable to historical rates observed during the 1980s. Given that nuclear energy continues to face serious challenges and contention, we inspect how extensive the improvements of coal-based power equipped with CCS technology would need to be if our economic optimization model is to significantly scale down the construction of new nuclear power plants. Abstract: This paper discusses the current status of CCS in China, providing an update of current projects and past activities in research and development, and a brief overview of prospects for CCS deployment in China. CCS related research in China has been building from a focus on research and development and exploration of the technical considerations o f CCS potential in China in coordination with international partners. While large scale demonstration of integrated CCS projects is still at an early stage, there is significant knowledge and technical expertise that can be derived from ongoing pilot projects. These projects employ various mature technologies that may be integrated and scaled to facilitate demonstration and deployment of CCS in the future. In addition, China is increasingly exploring opportunities in CO2 utilization to drive and support deployment of CCS–this is also known as CO2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). This paper provides information on some of these key activities, including details of specific projects and a background of the regulatory and policy frameworks and international cooperation on CCS and CCUS in China. Integrated gasification combined cycle systems (IGCC) are becoming more popular because of the characteristics, by which they are characterized, including low pollutants emissions, relatively high efficiency of electricity production and the ability to integrate the installation of carbon capture and storage (CCS). Currently, the most frequently used CO2 capture technology in IGCC systems is based on the absorption process. This method causes a significant increase of the internal load and decreases the efficiency of the entire system. It is therefore necessary to look for new methods of carbon dioxide capture. The authors of the present paper propose the use of membrane separation. The paper reviews available membranes for use in IGCC systems, indicates, inter alia, possible places of their implementation in the system and the required operation parameters. Attention is drawn to the most important parameters of membranes (among other selectivity and permeability) influencing the cost and performance of the whole installation. Numerical model of a membrane was used, among others, to analyze the influence of the basic parameters of the selected membranes on the purity and recovery ratio of the obtained permeate, as well as to determine the energetic cost of the use of membranes for the CO2 separation in IGCC systems. The calculations were made within the environment of the commercial package Aspen Plus. For the calculations both, membranes selective for carbon dioxide and membranes selective for hydrogen were used. Properly selected pressure before and after membrane module allowed for minimization of energy input on CCS installation assuring high purity and recovery ratio of separated gas. Abstract: Emissions from electricity generation will have to be reduced to near-zero to meet targets for reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions. Variable renewable energy sources such as wind will help to achieve this goal but they will have to be used in conjunction with other flexible power plants with low-CO2 emissions. A process which would be well suited to this role would be coal gasification hydrogen production with CCS, underground buffer storage of hydrogen and independent gas turbine power generation. The gasification hydrogen production and CO2 capture and storage equipment could operate at full load and only the power plants would need to operate flexibly and at low load, which would result in substantial practical and economic advantages. This paper analyses the performances and costs of such plants in scenarios with various amounts of wind generation, based on data for power demand and wind energy variability in the UK. In a scenario with 35% wind generation, overall emissions of CO2 could be reduced by 98–99%. The cost of abating CO2 emissions from the non-wind residual generation using the technique proposed in this paper would be less than 40% of the cost of using coal-fired power plants with integrated CCS. Meeting the Paris Agreement will most likely require the combination of CO 2 capture and biomass in the industrial sector, resulting in net negative emissions. CO 2 capture within the industry has been extensively investigated. However, biomass options have been poorly explored, with literature alluding to technical and economic barriers. In addition, a lack of consistency among studies makes comparing the performance of CO 2 capture and/or biomass use between studies and sectors difficult. These inconsistencies include differences in methodology, system boundaries, level of integration, costs, greenhouse gas intensity of feedstock and energy carriers, and capital cost estimations. Therefore, an integrated evaluation of the techno-economic performance regarding CO 2 capture and biomass use was performed for five energy-intensive industrial sub-sectors. Harmonization results indicate that CO 2 mitigation potentials vary for each sub-sector, resulting in reductions of 1.4–2.7 t CO 2 /t steel (77%–149%), 0.7 t CO 2 /t cement (92%), 0.2 t CO 2 /t crude oil (68%), 1.9 t CO 2 /t pulp (1663%–2548%), and 34.9 t CO 2 /t H 2 (313%). Negative emissions can be reached in the steel, paper and H 2 sectors. Novel bio-based production routes might enable net negative emissions in the cement and (petro)chemical sectors as well. All the above-mentioned potentials can be reached for 100 €/t CO 2 or less. Implementing mitigation options could reduce industrial CO 2 emissions by 10 Gt CO 2 /y by 2050, easily meeting the targets of the 2 °C scenario by the International Energy Agency (1.8 Gt CO 2 /y reduction) for the industrial sector and even the Beyond 2 °C scenario (4.2 Gt CO 2 /y reduction). • Literature review on CO 2 mitigation in steel, cement, chemical, H 2 and paper sectors. • Introduction harmonized methodology to allow comparison between industrial sectors. • All investigated sectors have large reduction potentials for <100 €/t CO 2 avoided. • Negative emissions possible in iron/steel, H 2 and paper sectors. • Potential CO 2 emission reduction of 10 Gt/yr in 2050, easily meeting climate target. Geological carbon storage is an effective method capable of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at significant scales. Subsurface reservoirs with sealing caprocks can provide long-term containment for the injected fluid. Nevertheless, CO2 leakage is a major concern. The presence of abandoned wells penetrating the reservoir caprock may cause leakage flow-paths for CO2 to the overburden. Assessment of time-varying leaky wells is a need. In this paper, we propose a new semi-analytical approach based on pressure-transient analysis to model the behavior of CO2 leakage and corresponding pressure distribution within the storage site and the overburden. Current methods assume instantaneous leakage of CO2 occurring with injection, which is not realistic. In this work, we employ the superposition in time and space to solve the diffusivity equation in 2D radial flow to approximate the transient pressure in the reservoirs. Fluid and rock compressibilities are taken into consideration, which allow calculating the breakthrough time and the leakage rate of CO2 to the overburden accurately. We use numerical simulations to verify the proposed time-dependent semi-analytical solution. The results show good agreement in both pressure and leakage rates. Sensitivity analysis is then conducted to assess different CO2 leakage scenarios to the overburden. The developed semi-analytical solution provides a new simple and practical approach to assess the potential of CO2 leakage outside the storage site. This approach is an alternative to numerical methods when detailed simulations are not feasible. This work reviews the existing open literature concerned with pipeline steel corrosion in CO2-rich phase with impurities for carbon capture and storage purpose. The intent of this review was to provide information on the corrosion mechanisms, which is crucial for establishing the mechanistic prediction models. The primary focus was placed on key affecting parameters and their corresponding mechanisms, while the corrosion control strategies and research prospects are also discussed. This review covers the effects of: impurities, pressure, temperature, flow, exposure time, product layers, and steel chemistry. The influences of flow dynamics, amines, sulphur, and solids that had received little systematic attention need to be further addressed. Contradictory conclusions regarding the influence of H2O and O2on the corrosion rates should be re-evaluated. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) is of unique significance for building a green and resilient energy system, and it is also a key solution to tackle the climate challenge. The concept of supersonic decarburization, a joint product of non-equilibrium condensation and swirling separation, can contribute to CCUS technology in a clean way. In this paper, a numerical model is established and validated to investigate the complex physical phenomena of supersonic decarbonization in a high-pressure environment based on the real gas equation of state. The model is compatible with the pure CO 2 model and CH 4 -CO 2 model. Through the simulation of the supersonic nozzle and supersonic separator, the condensation and separation performance of supersonic decarbonization technology was evaluated. For the condensation performance of carbon dioxide, the results show that higher pressure makes it much easier to achieve the condensation process. When the pressure is supercritical, the decrease of inlet temperature or the increase of inlet mole fraction of CO 2 leads to a higher liquid fraction. For separation performance, when the mass concentration of inlet heterogeneous droplets increases from 0.1 kg/m3 to 7.5 kg/m3, the carbon separation amount increases from 3.33 ton/h to 4.43 ton/h, while the exergy loss of condensed CO 2 drops from 436.57 kJ/kg to 329.56 kJ/kg. It demonstrates that the decarburization process is easier, and exergy required for condensation decreases when the concentration of the foreign core is larger. Partition (or distribution) coefficients determine the relative equilibrium concentrations of chemical constituents (or chemical tracers) in each of the phases of a multi-phase system under dilute conditions. The various fluid phases in a reservoir have differing transport properties (e.g. varying relative permeability) and to correctly interpret the behaviour of injected chemical tracers it is essential that accurate partition coefficients are known. In the context of carbon geosequestration or long-term storage of CO 2 , chemical tracers will be predominantly exposed to an environment consisting of supercritical CO 2 and formation water as the main fluid phases. To estimate/simulate the reservoir properties relevant to injected CO 2 tagged with chemical tracers, it is therefore necessary to incorporate high pressure/temperature CO 2 /water partition coefficients into any model/simulation. In this paper, we present a method to determine these partition coefficients for gaseous chemical tracers using a variation of the widely used EPICS (or equilibrium partitioning in a closed system) method. With this method, only the concentration in one phase (in this case, CO 2 ) needs to be measured. We then report these values for a series of representative chemical tracers (i.e. krypton, xenon, sulfur hexafluoride, perdeuterated methane and R134a) at pressure/temperature conditions that have been previously used at the CO2CRC's Otway CCS demonstration project in Victoria, Australia. These values were generally lower than the corresponding Henry's Law coefficients at comparable temperatures. Experiments also examined the impact of adding CH 4 to the system to mimic feedstock gas at the CO2CRC Otway project and provide data pertinent to scenarios where CO 2 is injected into depleted CH 4 gas fields. These values are compared with Henry's Law coefficients and another recently published set of high pressure/temperature partition coefficients. With computational simulations, we have shown that these differences are potentially significant and demonstrate their impact in three typical CO 2 geo-sequestration scenarios (i.e. injection into two types of aquifers and injection into a depleted reservoir with a gas cap). In the present paper, a CO 2 cryogenic capture for flue gas of an LNG-fired power generation system is proposed, in which LNG cold energy can be fully utilized during the gasification process. First of all, the flue gas is compressed to facilitate the CO 2 solid formation and separation. Sequentially, the CO 2 -removed flue gas expands to supply most of the cold energy needed for the cryogenic process. In comparison with traditional CO 2 -capture systems in LNG-fired power generation cycle, the new system does not require gasifying excessive amount of LNG. Based on the HYSYS simulation, the CO 2 capture pressure and temperature are investigated as the key parameters to find the appropriate working conditions of the CO 2 -capture system. The results show that the system can achieve a 90% CO 2 recovery rate or higher if the flue gas temperature can be lowered to less than −140 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Tomakomai CCS demonstration project is currently being undertaken by the Japanese government in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. The project is scheduled to run between the period of JFY (*) 2012 - 2020 to demonstrate the viability of a full chain CCS system, from CO 2 capture to injection and storage. One hundred thousand tonnes per year or more of CO 2 derived from an industrial source will be injected and stored in saline aquifers under the seabed in the offshore area of Tomakomai Port. Benefitting from the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, CO2 flooding for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has become increasingly attractive to the petroleum industry. This paper presents a numerical study about the feasibility and efficiency of the immiscible CO2 flooding process, which is a potential tertiary oil recovery method for use after water flooding, with advantages of lower cost and fewer facility requirements than miscible CO2 flooding. A numerical simulation model established from laboratory experimental results was used to predict fluid behaviour and influence factors of immiscible CO2 flooding in thick reservoirs with positive rhythm to enhance oil recovery after water flooding. Natural gas is an indispensable resource not evenly distributed in the world. The gas supply chain is characterized by large imbalances between supply and demand, where the underground gas storage (UGS) application plays a key role for creating strategic reserves, taking advantage of geological structures. On the contrary, human activities will require clean energy with near-zero greenhouse gas emissions to be environmentally viable. A key element of this strategy is the carbon capture and storage (CCS) application useful for confining CO2 into the geosphere to reduce anthropogenic emissions. The development of appropriate injection methods and long-term monitoring systems for leak detection of the underground storage of natural gas and CO2 is important to prevent negative effects, such as ground deformations and micro seismic events. In this work, a variety of monitoring applications were gathered and critically analyzed for a total of 60 scientific contributions spanning the world. This bibliographic work shows an analytical and statistical overview of the most common use of UGS and CCS, representing the different goals of these two applications and analyzing the main monitoring techniques used in the gathered contributions. Currently, UGS monitoring requires further development, especially through multidisciplinary approaches useful for identifying possible effects on the surface and gas leaks at depth; meanwhile, CCS solutions are still at the experimental stage, also because of the high costs for large-scale applications that still need specific research. To address the urging challenge of climate change, the concept of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) plays a key role for keeping global warming below 2 °C. Recently, the concept of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) has been a focus of growing attention with the aim of enabling an industrial utilisation of CO 2 as feedstock in the production of materials and fuels. Also in the pursuit of the ambitious targets set by the COP21 Paris agreement, CCU technologies could be discussed as an increasingly relevant means to meet mitigation targets. Often, CCU is commingled with the more prominent CCS and evaluated from the same perspective of climate change mitigation potential. Sometimes, the idea of utilising CO 2 as a resource is even used as an argument for investments in CCS. Despite some technological similarities, however, CCU and CCS address significantly different issues within the environmental policy debate. This paper analyses the commonalities and differences between CCU and CCS and recommends how one should be distinguished from the other, particularly in environmental policy fields and the public debate. Particularly, hopes that CCU could represent a promising perspective for contributing to mitigation efforts should not be exaggerated and considerations of CCU in climate politics need to account for the largely varying and technology specific temporary storage times of CO 2 and its specific substitution potential. Existing monitoring protocols for the storage of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in geologic formations are provided by carbon dioxide capture and geological storage (CCS)-specific regulations and bodies including the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, the European Union (EU) CCS and Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) Directives, United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Final Rules, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Modalities and Procedures (for developing countries). These protocols have varying levels of detail but similar principles and requirements for monitoring, and all include the need to quantify emissions and measure environmental impacts in the event of leakage to the surface. What they do not all include is the clarification that quantification monitoring should only be undertaken in cases where CO 2 has been attributed to leakage and not when leakage is only suspected. Quantifying suspected emissions is a significant monitoring challenge and undertaking, and may rely on acquiring large data sets over long time periods. This level of effort in monitoring would be unnecessary if the source of CO 2 detected at the surface is attributed to natural sources rather than from leakage, but a step to attribute CO 2 source is either missing from these protocols or is outdated in technical scope. Regulatory bodies call for protocols to be updated based on technical advances, and ongoing technical advances into leakage monitoring have now benefited from a first-ever public claim of leakage over a geologic CO 2 storage site in Saskatchewan, Canada, bringing more emphasis on the role of attribution monitoring. We present a brief update of some of the newest technical advances in attribution and suggest that CO 2 ‘attribution monitoring’ could now be included in monitoring protocols to avoid unnecessary and costly quantification monitoring unless it is fully warranted. In this context, this paper describes an option to improve the existing protocols for monitoring CO 2 at geological storage sites made possible because of recent developments in near-surface attribution monitoring techniques. The Quest CCS facility (located in Alberta, Canada) is a fully integrated carbon capture, transport and storage facility operated by Shell Canada. It continuously captures and stores about 1.1Mt of CO 2 per year. While the initial injectivity for the Quest CO 2 injection wells was very high, significant injectivity reductions have been observed. As dry CO 2 is injected, water can evaporate from the brine into the CO 2 driving precipitation of halite. Plugging of the perforation tunnel and pore throats in the near wellbore area can cause injectivity damage. One method to remediate halite damage is to inject a water-based fluid to dissolve the halite precipitate. Quest performed the first halite remediation treatment on one of the CO 2 injector wells in 2020. The objective of this paper is to present the design, execution and results of this initial halite remediation treatment. An outline of the design of the halite remediation treatment will be provided. Subsequently the halite remediation treatment as executed in the field will be reviewed including the timing of operations and the pumping pressure and rate data. Finally, to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment, skin analysis and injectivity trends pre and post remediation treatment shall be presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon capture and storage technology has the potential to reduce anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. However, the geomechanical response of the reservoir and sealing caprocks must be modelled and monitored to ensure that injected CO 2 is safely stored. To ensure confidence in model results, there is a clear need to develop ways of comparing model predictions with observations from the field. In this paper we develop an approach to simulate microseismic activity induced by injection, which allows us to compare geomechanical model predictions with observed microseismic activity. We apply this method to the In Salah CCS project, Algeria. A geomechanical reconstruction is used to simulate the locations, orientations and sizes of pre-existing fractures in the In Salah reservoir. The initial stress conditions, in combination with a history matched reservoir flow model, are used to determine when and where these fractures exceed Mohr–Coulomb limits, triggering failure. The sizes and orientations of fractures, and the stress conditions thereon, are used to determine the resulting micro-earthquake focal mechanisms and magnitudes. We compare our simulated event population with observations made at In Salah, finding good agreement between model and observations in terms of event locations, rates of seismicity, and event magnitudes.
