Climate change is affecting freshwater habitats worldwide through multiple, interacting pressures that influence the survival, distribution, and persistence of freshwater organisms. Temporary freshwater habitats, or those that dry seasonally, can exhibit wide‐ranging variability in temperature and drying regimes. Aquatic organisms with complex life cycles (e.g., aquatic and terrestrial life stages) often rely on temporary freshwaters to complete their life cycles and have specific adaptations to cope with these dynamic environments. However, climate change is altering the temperature and drying regime of many temporary freshwater habitats worldwide, often resulting in warmer habitats available for shorter durations of time. The ways in which climate‐mediated changes to temporary freshwaters affect development and life history of aquatic organisms, particularly those with complex life cycles, remains poorly understood.We investigated larval development, growth, survival, and relationships among them for two amphibian species, wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) and spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer), in response to warming and drying in a mesocosm experiment. Over 13 weeks in the spring and summer of 2019, we manipulated temperature and water levels in 48 outdoor pond mesocosms to produce four treatments: control (ambient conditions), drying alone, warming alone, and drying + warming. We predicted reduced survival, body size, and time to metamorphosis for both species in response to warming and drying, with the effect being stronger on wood frogs due to their more specialised habitat use and shorter breeding period.Warming treatments were on average 2°C higher than controls, and drying treatments decreased water depth by 2.5 cm each week. We found that warming temperature shortened larval time to metamorphosis, and drying decreased body size at metamorphosis. Surprisingly, we also found that, across all treatment groups, individuals with early metamorphosis tended to be larger in size and from mesocosms with generally higher survival.Our study indicates that warming and drying may act independently on different developmental responses for amphibians. Our results echo recent calls for a better understanding of the nuanced, often unpredictable, relationships among climate‐mediated environmental pressures and the developmental traits they influence, particularly for organisms with complex life cycles that depend upon dynamic habitat for growth and survival. Amphibians are more threatened than any other vertebrate class, yet evidence for many threats is missing. The Cape lowland fynbos (endemic scrub biome) is threatened by habitat loss, and natural temporary freshwater habitats are removed in favour of permanent impoundments. In this study, we determine amphibian assemblages across different freshwater habitat types with special attention to the presence of invasive fish. We find that anuran communities differ primarily by habitat type, with permanent water habitats having more widespread taxa, while temporary water bodies have more range restricted taxa. Invasive fish are found to have a significant impact on frogs with toads most tolerant of their presence. Temporary freshwater habitats are a conservation priority in the area, and their amphibian assemblages represent endemic taxa that are intolerant of invasive fish. Conservation of a biodiverse amphibian assemblage in lowland fynbos areas will rely on the creation of temporary freshwater habitats, rather than a northern hemisphere pond based solution. The study of the environmental features affecting amphibian communities is a priority task for addressing effective conservation initiatives. In the southern edge of the Apennines (Sila Massif, Calabria Region, Italy), we surveyed the distribution of amphibians in lotic freshwater habitats (eight rivers, 17 sampling stations, 87 transects) and recorded nine environmental variables, including the occurrence of potential predators (fish and Eurasian otter Lutra lutra), potentially affecting the distribution and breeding success of amphibian species. A total of seven amphibian species was recorded (75.9% of transects). Fish occurred in all rivers while the otter was found in four rivers (Amato, Lese, Neto, and Savuto). Illuminance and bank heterogeneity were the main factors affecting amphibian reproduction, while neither otter nor fish presence showed significant effects on the amphibian community. Overall, habitat complexity and coevolution history seemed to shape the distribution of amphibians and their breeding sites, while the ongoing recolonization of the study area by the otter is expected to have a negligible impact on the richness of the amphibian community. Metacommunity ecology provides a basis for understanding how ecological communities are assembled. Metacommunity theory can be applied to assess the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on freshwater communities. However, few studies have examined how species-specific responses to environmental covariates can generate broader patterns in freshwater metacommunities. I determined occupancy patterns in an amphibian metacommunity to identify important predictors of reproduction at wetland sites. I conducted surveys at 49 wetlands for tadpoles with fish traps and dip netting in an urbanising region in southeastern Australia. The larvae of seven frog species were detected. There were negative relationships between the probabilities of reproduction at a site and the relative abundance of the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) and wetland electrical conductivity. There was a positive relationship between tadpole occupancy and the proportion of accessible habitat within 1000 m of a site, a measure of the combined effects of roads and habitat amount. These results highlight the negative effect of predatory Gambusia on frog communities and illustrate the importance of the species-sorting and mass-effect perspectives of metacommunity theory at multiple spatial scales. Habitat restoration projects for amphibians should remove exotic fish or prevent their establishment in managed wetlands and maintain habitat connectivity to facilitate dispersal. In the present work, we discuss the results of a four-day long rapid survey around Dhamapur Lake and surrounding freshwater habitats in the Sindhudurg District of Maharashtra through public participation. In total, 61 odonates, 51 butterflies, 17 species of amphibians and reptiles, 90 birds, and four mammals are documented. Our observations taken over a brief time reflect the importance of citizen science in documenting local biodiversity. • Parasite infections often peak in certain seasons in aquatic ecosystems. • Meta-analysis of 693 seasonal infection contrasts reveals no universal pattern. • Taxon-specific patterns rule among winter-summer and wet-dry season infection dynamics. • The same parasite taxa show contrasting patterns between freshwater and marine habitats. • Sensitivity to abiotic conditions therefore varies widely among host-parasite systems. Seasonal infection dynamics characterise many host-parasite interactions, as abiotic conditions drive fundamental biological processes in both hosts and parasites. The extent to which seasonal cycles in parasite abundance are universal, and whether the same underlying mechanisms are responsible for seasonality across different host-parasite associations, have received little attention to date. Here, global patterns of seasonal infection dynamics are tested using a meta-analysis of 693 seasonal contrasts in the local abundance of metazoan parasites in aquatic vertebrates, representing 343 parasite species and 148 host species. These include both contrasts between winter and summer in temperate systems, and between wet and dry seasons in tropical systems. Overall, the analysis found no evidence that seasonal infection dynamics are universal, nor that they are controlled by the same factors. More specifically, the results indicate no overall effect of the magnitude of local seasonal differences in abiotic conditions (temperature or precipitation), type of host (amphibian or fish), habitat (freshwater, coastal marine or deep-sea), host body length, or mode of transmission (skin contact or trophic) on the extent of seasonal differences in parasite infections. Instead, the results revealed many clear taxon-specific or habitat-specific patterns of seasonal infection dynamics, with some parasite or host taxa generally showing distinct peaks in infections in summer or dry seasons, and others showing no seasonal changes. The present findings serve to identify empirically which host-parasite associations are most likely to respond to changing climatic conditions, and thus provide useful information for fisheries and aquaculture. The aim of the present paper was to check for the presence of cerebrovascular dystroglycan in vertebrates, because dystroglycan, which is localized in the vascular astroglial end‐feet, has a pivotal function in glio‐vascular connections. In mammalian brains, the immunoreactivity of β‐dystroglycan subunit delineates the vessels. The results of the present study demonstrate similar patterns in other vertebrates, except for anurans and the teleost groups Ostariophysi and Euteleostei. In this study, we investigated 1 or 2 representative species of the main groups of Chondrichthyes, teleost and non‐teleost ray‐finned fishes, urodeles, anurans, and reptiles. We also investigated 5 mammalian and 3 bird species. Animals were obtained from breeders or fishermen. The presence of β‐dystroglycan was investigated immunohistochemically in free‐floating sections. Pre‐embedding electron microscopical immunohistochemistry on Heterodontus japonicus shark brains demonstrated that in Elasmobranchii, β‐dystroglycan is also localized in the perivascular glial end‐feet despite the different construction of their blood–brain barrier. The results indicated that the cerebrovascular β‐dystroglycan immunoreactivity disappeared separately in anurans, and in teleosts, in the latter group before its division to Ostariophysi and Euteleostei. Immunohistochemistry in muscles and western blots from brain homogenates, however, detected the presence of β‐dystroglycan, even in anurans and all teleosts. A possible explanation is that in the glial end‐feet, β‐dystroglycan is masked in these animals, or disappeared during adaptation to the freshwater habitat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In highly ephemeral freshwater habitats, predatory vertebrates are typically unable to become established, leaving an open niche often filled by macroinvertebrate predators. However, these predators are faced with the challenge of finding sufficient food sources as the rapid rate of desiccation prevents the establishment of extended food chains and limits the number of prey species present. It could therefore be advantageous for predators to synchronize their phenology with that of their prey within sites of extreme ephemerality. We report the first case of adult diving beetles (Hydaticus parallelus) ovipositing their eggs within spawn of an amphibian species (sandpaper frog, Lechriodus fletcheri). This behavior was found among several pools used by L. fletcheri for reproduction. Beetle eggs oviposited in frog spawn were found to hatch within 24 h of the surrounding L. fletcheri eggs, with the larvae becoming voracious consumers of the hatched tadpoles. Although it has yet to be established experimentally whether this is an adaptive behavior, the laying of eggs among potential future tadpole prey in this instance should confer significant fitness benefits for the offspring upon hatching, ensuring that they are provided an immediate source of food at the start of their development and potentially throughout. This oviposition behavior might be common among diving beetles and could form a significant predatory threat for amphibians with a free-swimming larval stage in ephemeral freshwater habitats. Amphibians host a community of microbes on their skin that helps resist infectious disease via the dual influence of anti-pathogenic microbial species and emergent community dynamics. Many frogs rely on freshwater habitats, but salinization is rapidly increasing saltwater concentrations in wetlands around the globe, increasing the likelihood that frogs will come into contact with salt-contaminated habitats. Currently, we know little about how increased salt exposure will affect the symbiotic relationship between the skin microbes and frog hosts. To better understand how salt exposure in a natural context affects the frog skin microbiome, we use Hyla cinerea, a North American treefrog species that can inhabit brackish wetlands, to explore three questions. First, we determine the extent that microbial communities in the environment and on frog skin are similar across populations. Second, we assess the microbial species richness and relative abundance on frogs from habitats with different salinity levels to determine how salinity affects the microbiome. Third, we test whether the relative abundances of putatively pathogen-resistant bacterial species differ between frogs from inland and coastal environments. We found that the frog microbiome is more similar among frogs than to the microbial communities found in surface water and soil, but there is overlap between frog skin and the environmental samples. Skin microbial community richness did not differ among populations, but the relative abundances of microbes were different across populations and salinities. We found no differences in the relative abundances of the anti-fungal bacteria Janthinobacterium lividum, the genus Pseudomonas, and Serratia marcescens, suggesting that environmental exposure to saltwater has a limited influence on these putatively beneficial bacterial taxa. The role of invertebrate predation in shaping vertebrate communities is often overlooked. This is evident with predaceous diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), which are often the top predator in many aquatic freshwater habitats. During weekly monitoring of a reintroduction for an endangered frog, a group of a dozen adult diving beetles were encountered attacking and quickly dismembering and consuming a tadpole. A single adult diving beetle was also discovered burrowing its head inside and consuming a tadpole approximately 3–4 times its size by seemingly piercing its prey to suck out its liquefied remains. This is in contrast with the well known behaviour of adult dytiscids, which involves tearing prey into small pieces with their chewing mouthparts. Although dytiscids are known to occasionally consume vertebrates such as tadpoles, adults are typically considered scavengers, and this communal predatory behaviour and feeding method have not previously been documented. Moreover, over 80% of the tadpoles in the monitored site were found in ponds with no beetles and despite representing only a quarter of all ponds, half of the tadpoles across the landscape were in ponds free of diving beetles, demonstrating a possible influence of diving beetles on tadpoles. These observations may have implications for amphibian conservation since management efforts are not typically concerned with naturally occurring ubiquitous threats such as those from small invertebrate predators, as it has rarely been observed in nature. Although amphibian conservation plans expect some losses from natural predation, diving beetles may affect conservation efforts such as captive breeding and reintroductions with populations where every individual is critical to success. During monitoring of a habitat reintroduction in New South Wales, a group of a dozen adult diving beetles attacked and very quickly dismembered a tadpole. Post-mining sites often offer secondary habitats for various amphibians endangered in common agricultural landscapes. On the other hand, there is a general lack of quantitative studies on the effects of the common restoration practices on colonisation of such artificial freshwater habitats by amphibians. Here, we focus on two newts decreasing in Central Europe, Lissotriton vulgaris and Triturus cristatus , in pools within lignite (brown coal) spoil heaps in the western Czech Republic. We compared their abundances in pools established by technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, and their combination. In spring 2016, we sampled 29 freshwater pools in five spoil heaps and 10 fishponds in the surrounding agricultural landscape by funnel trapping. We captured 52 L. vulgaris and 138 T. cristatus in all the studied habitats together. As only two L. vulgaris and no T. cristatus were caught in fishponds, the high potential of pools in post-mining landscapes was confirmed. Both newt species generally avoided the artificially established pools, but the spontaneously established pools were equally suitable for them in both technically reclaimed and spontaneously developed heaps. L. vulgaris preferred more transparent water, higher cover of cattails and the pool placed in the forest, but with fewer trees on the pool banks, whilst T. cristatus preferred narrower zone of littoral vegetation , more trees on the pool banks, smaller water bodies and absence of fish. Such habitat preferences fully corroborate with natural habitats. The technical reclamation still prevails in restoration of post-mining sites in many regions. The Eurasian otter L utra lutra is a top predator that feeds mostly on fish. Yet, studies show the high plasticity of otter foraging behaviour and the varying importance of alternative food types in the species' diet., The aims of this study were, firstly, to demonstrate by meta-analysis how the diet composition of otters varies depending on the habitat occupied, in terms of the types of land use, waterbody, and bank vegetation. Secondly, we tested whether the choice of method of presenting prey percentages in the diet of otters influenced the conclusions of the meta-analysis., The percentage of fish in the diet was greater for otters occupying standing water than for those occupying flowing water; was higher for otters in waterbodies overgrown by reed vegetation; and varied depending on the type of surrounding land use. However, the results of the meta-analysis varied depending on which of the two most common methods of diet analysis were used: percentage biomass or relative frequency of occurrence ( RFO)., We showed that the plasticity of otter feeding behaviour might be explained by the various habitats occupied by otters. Habitat differences reflected in otters' diets might have importance for the maintenance and conservation of local populations of this species., The high diversity of methods used by researchers to report the results of dietary studies precludes full comparisons and synthesis. This demonstrates the importance of unification of reporting. Moreover, the conclusions reached by the authors of any particular study might be highly dependent on the method they applied. Many species of animals employ camouflage to render them inconspicuous. Selection to precisely match cryptic color patterns to the background substrate should result in geographic variation in relation to substrate type. We tested this premise by examining color pattern variation in relation to substrate surface in Fowler's Toad ( Anaxyrus fowleri), a noxious and cryptically colored amphibian that is widespread in eastern North America and frequently associated with sandy habitats. We quantified total dorsal spot area, number of spots, and size of the four largest dorsal spots among 330 specimens of Fowler's Toads (89 live, 241 preserved) in 14 samples from Canada and the United States. We found no significant difference in the extent or number of spots between males vs. females or between living vs. preserved specimens after compensating for variation in snout-vent length. However, toads from freshwater habitats with extensive areas of open sandy terrain had significantly smaller and fewer dorsal spots than toads from either seacoast localities with open sands present or toads from freshwater habitats with open sands absent. Because saltwater seaside beaches and sand dunes are generally uninhabitable by amphibians, we take this as evidence consistent with the presence of adaptive background pattern matching coloration in this species. Because habitats are increasingly exposed to multiple stressors simultaneously, assessing the interactive effects of stressors is crucial for understanding how populations respond to human-altered habitats. Salinization of freshwater habitats is increasing and has the potential to interact with other stressors. Chemical pollutants also contribute to habitat degradation in freshwater environments, and both salinity and various pesticides can harm amphibians. The present study used a factorial experiment to investigate the effect of elevated salinity alone and in combination with each of 3 pesticides-atrazine, carbaryl, and glyphosate-on life history and behavior of southern toad larvae ( Anaxyrus terrestris). Tadpoles were negatively affected by elevated salinity and by exposure to the insecticide carbaryl, with the most deleterious outcomes associated with both stressors combined. Carbaryl exposure led to reduced survival as well as sublethal effects on growth, activity and feeding behavior, escape response swimming, and time to metamorphosis. Tadpoles reared at elevated salinity were also smaller and less active, and ultimately metamorphosed later and at smaller size. Together, carbaryl and elevated salinity had a synergistic effect, resulting in particularly poor growth, depressed activity and feeding, and sluggish escape swimming among tadpoles exposed to both stressors simultaneously. These results suggest that both elevated salinity and carbaryl represent threats for amphibian populations and that pesticide exposure in salinized habitats may pose a particularly high risk. Microplastics (MPs) have been reported to threaten a wide variety of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater organisms. However, knowledge about the effects of MPs on anuran amphibians, one of the most threatened taxa worldwide, is still limited. To assess the effects of MPs on the growth and survival of the Italian agile frog (Rana latastei) and green toad (Bufotes balearicus) , we exposed tadpoles to three different concentrations (1, 7, and 50 mg L−1) of an environmental relevant mixture of microplastics (HPDE, PVC, PS and PES), recording data on their activity level, weight and mortality rates. While the effects of MPs on green toad tadpoles were negligible, Italian agile frog tadpoles were severely affected both in terms of growth and activity level, with high mortality rates even at the lowest MP density (1 mg L−1). Our results suggest that MP contamination of freshwater habitats may contribute to the ongoing decline of anuran amphibians. The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) has been described as piscivorous in Romania, but our recent studies suggested that the otter may be better defined as an opportunistic predator, with its feeding behaviour being dependent on the availability of prey. Otter is recognised as one of the top predators in freshwater systems, and thus has the potential to play an important role in the functioning of these ecosystems. Between December 2012 and September 2013, the diet of the otter, was identified by collecting and examining n 56 spraints (faeces) from 36 sites (different habitats, streams and rivers), from several river catchments throughout Putna Vrancea Natural Park in the Eastern Carpathians. In most of the spraints, fish was the main prey consumed, 31%, followed closely by amphibians with 24%, insects 21%, mammals 16% and other groups in a small amount: 3% gastropoda, 3% plantae and 2% reptilia. Abstract: Freshwater habitats are globally threatened by human-induced secondary salinization. Amphibians are generally poorly adapted to survive in saline environments. We experimentally investigated the effects of chronic exposure to various salinities (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35% seawater, SW) on survival, larval growth and metamorphosis of tadpoles from two amphibian populations belonging to two species: the green toad Bufo balearicus and the common toad Bufo bufo. In addition, gill morphology of tadpoles of both species after acute exposure to hypertonic conditions (20%, 25%, and 30% SW) was examined by light and electron microscopy. Tadpoles experienced 100% mortality above 20% SW in B. balearicus while above 15% SW in B. bufo. We detected also sublethal effects of salinity stress on growth and metamorphosis. B. bufo cannot withstand chronic exposure to salinity above 5% SW, tadpoles grew slower and were significantly smaller than those in control at metamorphosis. B. balearicus tolerated salinity up to 20% SW without apparent effects during larval development, but starting from 15% SW tadpoles metamorphosed later and at a smaller size compared with control. We also revealed a negative relation between increasing salt concentration and gill integrity. The main modifications were increased mucous secretion, detachment of external layer, alteration of epithelial surface, degeneration phenomena, appearance of residual bodies, and macrophage immigration. These morphological alterations of gill epithelium can interfere with respiratory function and both osmotic and acid-base regulation. Significant variations in branchial Na+/K+-ATPase activity were also observed between two species; moreover an increase in enzyme activity was evident in response to SW exposure. Epithelial responses to increasing salt concentration were different in the populations belonging to two species: the intensity of histological and ultrastructural pathology in B. bufo was greater and we noticed the appearance in exposed samples of the tubular vesicle cells (TVCs). Taken together, our results demonstrated that increased salinity of freshwater may give cause for concern and must be considered a stressor for amphibians as well as other pollutants.
