Background: The goal of post-stroke early rehabilitation is to regain ambulation, standing and balance. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of vestibular and somatosensory rehabilitation in addition to early rehabilitation on balance in patients with early subacute stroke. Design and setting: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at a university hospital. Methods: The study was included 52 hemiplegic hospitalized early suacute stroke patients. The experimental group (n: 30), was applied with vestibular and somatosensorial rehabilitation together with early rehabilitation. Vestibular exercises, included Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises, stimulate the vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal reflex. Somatosensory exercises, which included Frenkel exercises, stimulate the sensory proprioception and somatosensory systems. The control group (n: 22) patients with early subacute stroke were treated with the early rehabilitation program only. The balance parameters of the patients were evaluated with the Korebalance System, Functional Reach Test, Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke, and Functional Ambulation Scale. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67.32 ± 9.46 years, and the mean number of days that had passed since the stroke occurred was 17.90 ± 7.26. In calculating the balance scores, statistically significant differences were observed in the experimental and control groups, with a statistically greater improvement in the rehabilitation group. Statistically significant differences were determined between the groups in respect of the balance scores. Conclusions: Based on these findings, the use of vestibular and somatosensory rehabilitation can be recommended for better functioning of the compensatory mechanism of early subacute-stroke hemiplegic patients in early ambulation, and this can lead to considerably improved standing and dynamic upper and lower body balance. The recent pandemic has shown that protecting the general population from hazardous substances or pathogens can be a challenging and urgent task. The key element to adequate protection is appropriately sized, well-fitted and sufficiently distributed personal protective equipment (PPE). While these conditions are followed for adult PPE wearers, they are less considered when it comes to protecting subadults. In this study, the assessment of the fit and design improvements of a 3D-printed facial half mask for subadult wearers (4–18 years) is designed. The target population was represented by 1137 subadults, aged 4.06–18.94 years, for whom 3D face models were acquired. The half mask tested, which was originally provided in one subadult size, did not fit appropriately the target population. This finding prompted the creation of four size categories using the age-dependent distribution of the centroid size calculated from 7 facial landmarks. For each size category, a modified half-mask virtual design was created, including resizing and reshaping, and fit was evaluated visually and numerically using averaged and random 3D face representatives. Objective: The term psychotic experiences (PEs) encompass subclinical hallucinatory and delusional experiences. There are limited number of studies on PEs clinical and socio-demographic characteristics. We aimed to investigate the association between PEs and patterns of cannabis use, cognitive functions, schizotypy and childhood traumas. Methods: Participants were recruited from specialized units using the snowball method. All of the participants were regular cannabis users. Participants with PEs and without PEs were compared by looking into socio-demographic and clinical correlates. Significant variables at univariate comparisons were included in binary multivariate logistic regression analysis with PEs as the dependent variable. Results: Forty participants were recruited (20 with PEs, 20 without PEs). Adolescence onset of cannabis use (χ2 = 8.120; p < 0.05), positive schizotypy (t = 3.762; p < 0.01), Trail Making Test A (TMT A) Scores (u = 98.5; p < 0.01) and emotional neglect (u = 128; p = 0.05) were significantly associated with PEs. The binary regression model included a significant contribution of positive schizotypy (OR = 1.16, CI 1.025–1.330) and TMT A Score (OR = 1.22, CI 1.03–1.44). Conclusions: Results showed a novel positive association of PEs with adolescent-onset cannabis use, TMT A Scores, positive schizotypy and emotional neglect. Purpose: After stroke, upper limb somatosensation can be impaired which affects motor control. Vision is often used to compensate for this. A clinical assessment which assesses the combined sensorimotor function in the absence of vision would be beneficial in studies targeting sensorimotor improvement. Methods and materials: We adapted the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) to be performed without vision and called this modified version the sensorimotor ARAT (sARAT). Sixty healthy participants and 22 participants with chronic stroke performed the ARAT, sARAT, Fugl-Meyer upper extremity assessment (FM-UE) and Erasmus modified Nottingham sensory assessment (EmNSA). Discriminative validity of sARAT was evaluated by comparing performance between healthy participants and participants with chronic stroke. Convergent validity was evaluated by correlating sARAT with FM-UE and EmNSA. Results: Participants with stroke performed worse on the sARAT compared to healthy participants (p < 0.001), with median scores of 52 (IQR 32-57) and 57 (IQR 57-57), respectively. The sARAT showed high correlations with FM-UE and EmNSA (r = 0.80-0.90). Conclusions: The sARAT shows good discriminative and convergent validity in people with chronic stroke. It allows a quick assessment of the combined upper limb sensorimotor function, by performing the well-known ARAT with the eyes closed. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: The sensorimotor adaptation of the Action Research Arm Test (sARAT) is a clinical assessment of upper limb activity which is performed with the eyes closed. Combining the gold standard ARAT with the sensorimotor adaptation sARAT can inform about the influence of somatosensory impairments on upper limb activity in stroke survivors when vision is blocked. This trial was carried out to investigate the effect of forced air warming in various body areas of women on hypothermia during cesarean delivery. The patients in the study groups (n = 76) were assigned to the full-body warming group, upper-extremity warming group, lower-extremity warming group, and control groups. The intervention groups received forced-air warming 30 min before the surgery and continued until 30 min after surgery. The incidence of hypothermia was significantly higher in the control group than in the other groups at the 60th minute of the operation (p < 0.01). The intervention and control groups showed significant differences in the frequency of shivering at the entrance to the PACU (p = 0.001). Thermal comfort scores have significant difference between the control group and all of the intervention groups (p<.001). In this study, we examined the effectiveness of Women's Postpartum Sexual Health Program (WPSHP) on Iranian women's sexual health in the postpartum period. A single-blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted in 2016 on 80 postnatal women in Iran. We used the Female Sexual Function Index, Sexual Quality of Life - Female questionnaire and Female Sexual Distress Scale. The intervention group received counseling based on WPSHP. After 28 weeks, the mean score of the Female Sexual Function Index and Female Sexual Quality of Life significantly increased in the WPSH group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001), while the mean score of the Female Sexual Distress significantly decreased in the WPSH group (p < 0.001). We concluded that Women's Postpartum Sexual Health Program could promote postnatal women's sexual function and female sexual quality of life and reduces female sexual distress in women suffering from sexual problems in the postpartum period. Various prediction scores have been developed to predict mortality in trauma patients, such as the shock index (SI), modified SI (mSI), age-adjusted SI (aSI), and the shock index (SI) multiplied by the alert/verbal/painful/unresponsive (AVPU) score (SIAVPU). The SIAVPU is a novel scoring system but its prediction accuracy for trauma outcomes remains in need of further validation. Therefore, we investigated the accuracy of four scoring systems, including SI, mSI, aSI, and SIAVPU, in predicting mortality, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), and prolonged hospital length of stay ≥ 30 days (LOS). This retrospective multicenter study used data from the Tzu Chi Hospital trauma database. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was determined for each outcome to assess their discrimination capabilities and comparing by Delong's test. Subgroup analyses were conducted to investigate the prediction accuracy of the SIAVPU in different patient populations. In total, 5355 patients were included in the analysis. The median of SIAVPU were significantly higher among patients at those with major injury (1.47 vs 0.63), those admitted to the ICU (0.73 vs 0.62), those with prolonged hospital LOS≥ 30 days (0.83 vs 0.64), and those with mortality (1.08 vs 0.64). The AUROC of the SIAVPU was significantly higher than that of the SI, mSI, and aSI for 24-h mortality (AUROC: 0.845 vs 0.533, 0.540, and 0.678), 3-day mortality (AUROC: 0.803 vs 0.513, 0.524, and 0.688), 7-day mortality (AUROC: 0.755 vs 0.494, 0.505, and 0.648), in-hospital mortality (AUROC: 0.722 vs 0.510, 0.524, and 0.667), ICU admission (AUROC: 0.635 vs 0.547, 0.551, and 0.563). At the optimal cutoff value of 0.9, the SIAVPU had an accuracy of 82.2% for predicting 24-h mortality, 82.8% for predicting 3-day mortality, of 82.8% for predicting 7-day mortality, of 82.5% for predicting in-hospital mortality, of 73.9% for predicting Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission, and of 81.7% for predicting prolonged hospital LOS ≥30 days. Our results reveal that SIAVPU has better accuracy than the SI, mSI, and aSI for predicting 24-h, 3-day, 7-day, and in-hospital mortality; ICU admission; and prolonged hospital LOS ≥30 days among patients with traumatic injury. Purpose: We investigated the association between the time to first post-extubation oral intake, barriers to oral intake, and the rate of activities of daily living (ADL) independence at discharge (Barthel Index score <70). Method: Consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit, aged ≥18 years, and mechanically ventilated for ≥48 hr were retrospectively enrolled. The time to first oral intake, barriers to oral intake, daily changes, and clinical outcomes were assessed. Multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for baseline characteristics was used to determine the association between time to first post-extubation oral intake and ADL independence. Result: Among the 136 patients, 74 were assigned to the ADL independence group and 62 to the dependence group. The time to first post-extubation oral intake was significantly associated with ADL independence (adjusted p = < 0.001) and was a predictor of ADL independence at discharge. Respiratory and dysphagia-related factors (odds ratio [OR] 0.35; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.15–0.82, p = 0.015 and OR 0.07; CI 0.01–0.68, p = 0.021, respectively) were significantly associated with the ADL independence at discharge. Conclusion: Respiratory and dysphagia-related factors, as barriers to the initiation of oral intake after extubation, were significantly associated with ADL independence at discharge. The perception of social support among patients with advanced diseases is influenced by various factors. The socio-cultural context of Bangladesh significantly shapes the experience of patients with advanced cancer and their perception of social support. This study's aim was to assess the perceived social support by these patients and investigate the factors that shape their perception. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 115 advanced cancer patients admitted to the palliative medicine department of a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. Perceived social support was measured by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Perceived social support was moderate to high for most (74.7%) of the participants. The majority (97.4%) perceived moderate to high level of support from their families. The lowest level of support was perceived from friends (53%). Factors such as economic status, family size, companionship of children, and emotional support from spouses influenced the level of perceived social support. Social support is one of the important aspects of palliative care. Identifying the factors influencing the perception of social support among cancer patients is essential for palliative care professionals to effectively address their care needs. Gynecological examination has an very place among to maintain women's health. Negative attitudes and anxiety about gynecological examination may affect coming to the examination. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of online training and counseling on women's attitudes and anxiety toward the gynecological examination. We randomized 100 women participating in the study into experimental and control groups. We concluded that online training and counseling had a positive effect on the attitudes of women in the experimental group toward gynecological examination. Also we determined that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety toward gynecological examinations. In this study, we determined that online training and counseling positively improved women's attitudes toward gynecological examination. We also found that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety about gynecological examinations. In the literature, most of the studies on gynecological examination have a descriptive design. This study is important since it contributes to scientific knowledge in determining the attitudes and anxiety levels of women that may affect their status of undergoing gynecological examination. This study aimed to investigate the additional effects of perioperative immunonutrition (IMN) compared with preoperative immunonutrition (IMN) on anthropometric, nutritional, and biochemical parameters, hospital stay and postoperative complications in patients with colorectal cancer. Oral supplementation enriched with arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, and dietary nucleotides was given to 25 patients before and after the operation (Group 2); 25 patients received the same formula before surgery and standard isocaloric nutrition following the operation (Group 1). Postoperative body weight, body mass index (BMI), and middle upper arm circumference (MUAC) of Group 1 decreased more than Group 2 during follow-up (p < 0.05). The biochemical parameters, C-reactive protein (CRP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were higher, and albumin was lower than the baseline in Group 1 compared to Group 2 (p < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between CRP and Nutrition Risk Screening (NRS) 2002 scores, and prealbumin and NRS 2002 scores had a positive correlation (p = 0.007, r = 0.384; p = 0.012, r = 0.352). There was no difference in hospital stay and postoperative complications between the groups (p > 0.05). Perioperative immunonutrition, compared to preoperative immunonutrition, can be used as a positive and effective approach in improving some anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameters in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. To evaluate the balance in patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and knee osteoarthrosis (KOA), measured by postural stability computerized evaluation (PSCE), and to evaluate the effect of post-TKA patients' characteristics in their performance on PSCE. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in two sets of patients: (A) patients with KOA and primary TKA surgery scheduled and (B) patients who underwent primary TKA >9 months. Sociodemographic, radiographic, clinical and PSCE parameters (using the Biodex Balance System) were assessed. Post-TKA patients placed more load on the replaced knee than the contralateral osteoarthritic knee (p = 0.027). They had less imbalance on the balance tests performed with the eyes open, on stable (p = 0.032), and unstable platforms (p = 0.022). These patients also showed better postural stability in monopodalic stance, both standing on the TKA (p = 0.010) and contralateral knee (p = 0.017). Age, weight, pain on the operated knee, extension deficit on the operated knee, and Berg Balance Scale scores on post-TKA patients were significantly associated with their performance on PSCE tests. PSCE can be useful to quantify the balance of post-TKA and KOA patients. Total knee arthroplasty is the definitive treatment for knee osteoarthrosis and it has several benefits, but its effect on balance is still unknown. Postural stability computerized evaluation is used to evaluate balance on vestibular diseases and it has been recently studied on musculoskeletal conditions. To examine whether extended compared to standard level of physiotherapy is feasible and has beneficial effects on physical function in ICU survivors. This prospective pilot study with a before and after design included patients discharged from ICU to a surgical ward. The comparison group were recruited between January and April 2019 and received standard level of physiotherapy. The intervention group were recruited between May and December 2019 and received extended physiotherapy, corresponding to 50% additional physiotherapist, working 4 hours per weekday. The intervention participants received an individual rehabilitation plan developed in collaboration with a ward-based physiotherapist, and an extended number of sessions provided by the extra resource included practicing individualized exercises, for example walking and stair climbing. Physical function was measured with the Chelsea Critical Care Physical Assessment tool (CPAx) at ICU discharge, during hospital stay and discharge. Group differences were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U-test and Chi2 test. Out of 46 eligible patients, 39 (85%) fulfilled the study (comparison n = 12, intervention n = 27) and were included in the final analyses. No adverse events occurred, and the attendance rate was high (98.5%). There were no statistically significant differences between the groups regarding physical function, hospital stay, and readmissions, but there were tendencies to better outcomes in all these parameters in favor of the intervention group. Additionally, patients in the intervention group had statistically significantly higher scores in the CPAx items "transferring from bed to chair" (median 5 vs 4, p =.039) and "stepping" (median 5 vs 4, p =.005) at hospital discharge. This pilot study indicates that extended physiotherapy after ICU discharge is feasible and does not entail patient safety risks. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) became a significant challenge for the work and personal experience of physiotherapists (PTs) To investigate how the work activities of PTs in a region in Italy have changed, describe the reasons for change, perceived competence, and effectiveness of professional education, and explore their personal experience We adopted a monocentric convergent mixed-methods light–questionnaire variant study. The questionnaire contains both closed-ended and open-ended questions. Quantitative and qualitative data were combined to interpret the results Among 78 respondents (response rate 24.4%), 87.2% worked during the pandemic, 52.9% treated patients with COVID-19, and 45.6% changed their working activities. Professional competence was perceived as low in intensive and sub-intensive care settings. The major critical aspect of professional education was respiratory rehabilitation. Life-learning education was judged as effective, even if mainly focused on safety. Nine themes emerged from the analysis of the PTs' experiences: 1) Physiotherapy during COVID-19; 2) Fear and negative feelings; 3) Positive aspects; 4) Organization and management; 5) Prevention measures; 6) Patients; 7) Change; 8) Information; and 9) Professional education PTs who have direct experience with patients with COVID-19 showed great resilience. Early cardiac rehabilitation using non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and aerobic exercise may reduce the length of hospital stay in patients with heart failure (HF), however, there is still no evidence of this effect on patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise (AE) performed simultaneously with non-invasive ventilation (NIV) on the length of intensive care stay (LICUS) in patients diagnosed with decompensated heart failure (HF) admitted to the intensive care units (ICU). Twenty-eight patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) because of decompensation of HF were randomised into two groups: the intervention group (AE + NIV), and a control group. The intervention group's treatment strategy involved simultaneous AE with NIV daily. The control group performed non-simultaneous AE and NIV daily during their ICU stay. The primary outcome was LICUS. The secondary outcomes were the length of hospital stay, peripheral and respiratory muscle strength, functional status, functional classification, and exercise tolerance. The mean LICUS was shorter in AE + NIV than in the control group (6.3 ± 4.7 days vs 8.3 ± 3.6 days, respectively; p = 0.015). Secondary outcomes were similar between groups, except for exercise hemodynamics, which was improved in AE + NIV, as showed by the decreased diastolic blood pressure immediately after the exercise tolerance test. The use of AE simultaneous with NIV reduced the LICUS of patients admitted to the ICU because of decompensated HF. Trunk muscles' function and characteristics are of great importance for both static and dynamic tasks in different sports, and abnormalities of trunk flexors and extensors might be associated with low back pain (LBP). The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the functional, morphological and contractile properties in trunk flexors and extensors of young gymnasts with and without LBP. Young gymnasts (14/25 females, 14–18 y) were screened for the presence of chronic LBP. Abdominal and lumbar muscles were tested for function (McGill's endurance tests), thickness (ultrasound), and contractile responses (tensiomyography). An 8-sessions physiotherapy intervention including postural reeducation was performed by a subsample of 10 subjects with LBP. LBP was found to be associated to higher flexors-to-extensors endurance ratio (OR 11.250, 95% CI: 1.647–76.849, p = 0.014), reduced mean lumbar multifidus thickness (OR 16.500, 95% CI: 2.246–121.228, p = 0.006), and reduced mean erector spinae radial displacement (OR 16.500, 95% CI: 2.246–121.228, p = 0.006). The physiotherapy intervention was found to reduce LBP symptoms and it was associated with a significant improvement in the flexors-to-extensors ratio (p < 0.001). This study provides preliminary evidence of functional, morphological, and contractile trunk muscles' alterations associated with chronic LBP in young gymnasts, and presents the effects of a postural reeducation program on symptoms and muscles' functional properties. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exercises by mechanical hippotherapy devices on postural control, balance, mobility, and Quality of Life in patients with stroke. This was a randomized controlled clinical trial with a total of 30 which were randomly divided into two groups. The participants in the mechanical hippotherapy group (MHG) (n = 15) were given exercises with a mechanical hippotherapy device for 15 min in addition to intensive conventional treatments (45 min), while the control group (CG) (n = 15) received additional 15 min of postural control and balance exercises for five days per week for four consecutive weeks. The primary outcome was The Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Secondary outcomes were the Fugl–Meyer (FM) Rating Scale, Biodex Balance Measurement (BBM), Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS), the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and quality of Life Short Form (SF-36). In the MHG, FM-Lower extremity score (−6.4, p = 0.024), FM-Upper extremity score (−12.87, p = 0.013), TIS (−5.87, p = 0.04) and TUG (5.73, p = 0.027) improved statistically significant compared to CG. Identifying factors influencing the retention in the treatment of substance users is one of the great issues in the health field. The present study was performed to identify the motivations to start treatment and their relationship with retention in the treatment. This cross-sectional study carried out on 189 people with substance use disorder undergoing treatment in the first month referred to addiction treatment clinics in 2021. Forty clinics were selected using a simple random sampling method. Required information was collected using a demographic and "motivating factors to quit" questionnaire. Data were analyzed using chi-square, Fisher's exact and Mann – Whitney U tests through SPSS version 24. This study showed a significant relationship between the place of residence and occupation of the subjects with all the fields of the "motivating factors to quit" questionnaire (p < 0.05). Only "family" item had a significant relationship with retention in the treatment (p < 0.05). Considering the relationship between the family item and retention in the treatment, it seems that informing the patient's family about the importance of encouraging, supporting and quit plan can be an effective help in increasing retention in the treatment. The "Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing" (EMDR) is a therapy targeting traumatic memories. Although memories from their substance use memory may increase the risk of relapse, only a few studies investigated the effects of EMDR in addiction. Individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) receiving TAU in a residential setting were randomized for EMDR in conjunction with TAU (EMDR + TAU) and TAU groups. Craving for the substance, substance target memory features, relapse rates and other measures of EMDR efficacy were assessed after intervention at 6 weeks (T1) and 6-month follow-up (T2). EMDR + TAU significantly suppressed substance craving, pleasantness, and target memory vividness at T1, but increased substance unpleasant scores. EMDR effects were also significantly observed at T2 for pleasantness and vividness. EMDR + TAU group showed high scores and reported benefits from EMDR, but not significant differences in relapse rate, vs. TAU group. Our study suggests that EMDR + TAU in SUD inpatient in a residential setting may reduce substance craving, and in the meantime, provides proof-of-concept on targeting substance memory. Orthotic devices may be prescribed for the management of foot and ankle deformities caused by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). However, the actual use of these devices is variable. No studies have evaluated the impact of prescription, delivery and follow-up of orthotic devices on their use. We aimed to describe the relationship between the pathways followed by individuals with CMT and orthotic device use. Exploratory, cross-sectional, 35-item survey of orthotic device management. Individuals with CMT were recruited from CMT-France Association. Of the 940 respondents, 795 were included, mean age of 52.9 (SD 16.9) years. Rate of orthotic device use was 49.2% (391/795). The most frequent reason for non-use was a poor fit. Non-use was related to the orthotic device type, the health professionals consulted, and the severity of the CMT-related impairments. Follow-up visits (38.7%), re-evaluation of orthotic devices (25.3%) and consultations with the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine physician were infrequent (28.3%). Orthotic devices are massively underused. Follow-up and re-evaluation are infrequent. Care pathways, prescription and delivery of orthotic devices must be optimized to meet the expectations of people with CMT. Device fitting, individual needs, and changes in the clinical state must be re-evaluated regularly by specialists to improve orthotic device use. Foot deformities and foot drop contribute to disability in people with Charcot Marie Tooth Disease but use of orthotic devices is poor. To improve orthotic device use, regular multidisciplinary consultations and regular re-evaluation of the device by specialists in neuro-orthopaedics are important. The device fit should be regularly re-evaluated by the prescribing doctor or the practitioner who made the device. Regular multimodal evaluation of foot deformity, including muscle strength and length, and the individual's needs and expectations is also important to improve orthotic device use. Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) are at high risk for pulmonary and vascular complications. Smoking is an important risk factor for respiratory symptoms and vascular complications of many diseases in the general population. However, studies on the role of smoking in SSc are insufficient. This study aimed to compare pulmonary function, respiratory symptoms, functional level, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with SSc according to smoking status and to assess the correlation between cigarette consumption and these parameters in patients with SSc. Seventy-two patients with SSc (smoker group; n = 35 or nonsmoker group; n = 37) were included. The pulmonary function test was measured with a spirometer. Respiratory symptoms were questioned and the perceived severity of dyspnea and fatigue was evaluated. The functional levels were determined by questioning the patients' average daily walking distance, exercise habits, and daily sedentary time. HRQoL was assessed by Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire. The rate of respiratory symptoms including dyspnea, cough, and sputum were higher in the smoker group (p<.001, p =.041, and p<.001, respectively). Also, the perceived severity of dyspnea and fatigue was higher in the smoker group (p <.05). The mean daily walking distance, exercise habits, and overall HRQoL were lower (p =.004, p =.002, and p =.034, respectively) and the sedentary time and vascular complications were higher (p<.001 and p =.038, respectively) in the smoker group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the pulmonary function test (p >.05). There was a weak to moderate correlation between cigarette consumption and respiratory symptoms, dyspnea and fatigue severity, functional level, and HRQoL in the smoker group (0.001 ≤ p ≤.024). Smoking may increase respiratory symptoms and vascular complications and decrease the functional level and HRQoL in patients with SSc. To maintain functional independence in patients with SSc, awareness of the harms of smoking should be increased and smoking cessation should be encouraged, along with physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs including exercise and physical activity recommendations. To evaluate the efficacy of environment-based intervention on participation outcomes and parent efficacy in autistic children. Twenty-one autistic children 6–10 years old and their parents were randomized to environment-based intervention (n = 11) or usual care (n = 10). The environment-based intervention targets individualized participation goals in leisure and community activities through changing environment and activity demands. The study outcomes were Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Goal attainment scaling (GAS), and Parent Empowerment and Efficacy Measure (PEEM). Assessments included baseline, 12 weeks (post-test), and 24 weeks (follow-up). Mixed ANOVAs were used to examine within-group and between-group effects in outcome variables. The COPM performance and satisfaction scores and GAS T-scores increased after environment-based intervention from baseline to 12 weeks and 24 weeks (p < 0.001) but did not significantly differ from usual care. The medium to large effect sizes of COPM performance and GAS T-scores favored the environment-based intervention. For the PEEM scores, no significant differences were found. Environment-based intervention may support school-age autistic children to participate in self-chosen activities over time. The intervention effects on participation goals and parent efficacy, however, were inconclusive and need further research. Environmental barriers are important attributes to participation restriction in autistic children. Interventions focusing on modifying the task and environment is viable in supporting the participation of autistic children. The environment-based intervention appears to improve the participation goals in leisure and community-based activities over time. The environment-focused strategies may include providing social support, enabling access to a sensory-friendly environment, finding inclusive programs, adapting task demands, and managing routines. To evaluate the immediate and 4-week effects of compression garments (CG) on balance using a force platform during 8 different visual, static, and dynamic conditions in hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) patients. Thirty-six participants were randomly assigned to a group: physiotherapy alone (PT, n = 19) or physiotherapy and daily CG wearing for 4 weeks (PT + CG, n = 17). Both attended 12 physiotherapy sessions (strengthening, proprioception, and balance exercises) for 4 weeks. Primary outcome: sway velocity of the centre of pressure (COP) measured before, immediately with the CG, and at 4 weeks. Secondary outcomes: ellipse area, Romberg quotient, and pain. Sway velocity in dynamic conditions decreased immediately with the CG. After 4 weeks of intervention, sway velocity (95% CI 4.36–39.23, effect size 0.93) and area (95% CI 146–3274, effect size 0.45) on the laterally oscillating platform with eyes-closed improved more in the PT + CG group than the PT group. Romberg quotient on foam cushion improved more in the PT + CG than the PT group. Pain decreased in both groups after 4 weeks with no between-group difference. Shock after resuscitation from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is often treated with vasopressors. We examined whether infusion of epinephrine versus norepinephrine was associated with prehospital rearrest and neurologically favorable survival among OHCA patients. This retrospective study included OHCA cases in Seattle, Washington from 2014-2021 who had return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) followed by vasopressor infusion. Our primary exposure was infusion of epinephrine or norepinephrine. Our primary outcome was prehospital rearrest. Secondary outcomes included survival and neurologically favorable outcome (Cerebral Performance Category score of 1 or 2). We used multivariable logistic regression to test associations between exposures and outcomes adjusting for key covariates. Of 451 OHCA patients with ROSC followed by vasopressor infusion, 253 (56%) received norepinephrine and 198 (44%) received epinephrine infusions. Those who received epinephrine were older (median 66 [interquartile ranges {IQR} 53-79] vs 63 [IQR 47-75] years), but otherwise had similar baseline characteristics. Patients who received epinephrine were twice as likely to rearrest (55% vs 25%). After adjustment, the difference in rearrest rates between epinephrine and norepinephrine persisted (OR 3.28, 95%CI 2.25-5.08), and the odds of pulses at hospital arrival were lower in the epinephrine group (OR 0.52 95%CI 0.32-0.83). After adjustment, there was no difference in neurologically favorable survival, survival to hospital admission, or survival to discharge. Patients who received epinephrine infusions after ROSC suffered prehospital rearrest more frequently than those who received norepinephrine. We sought to describe prehospital ultrasound (PHUS) use and trends in PHUS utilization over time using a national database. Using the 2018 – 2021 National Emergency Medical Services Information System databases, we identified those EMS activations where PHUS was performed. We evaluated the association between year and number of PHUS exams performed using univariable and multivariable regression analysis. Analysis was performed on the overall group and various subgroups. In total, there were 148,709,000 EMS activations by 13,899 agencies over the 4 years. Of these, 3,291 unique activations (0.002%) involved PHUS, performed by 71 EMS agencies (0.5%). The annual rate of ultrasound evaluations per 1 million EMS activations significantly increased over the study period: 5.2 in 2018, 14.8 in 2019, 18.6 in 2020, and 38.9 in 2021 (p < 0.01). The number of agencies performing PHUS each year increased over the study period from 11 in 2018 to 54 in 2021 (p < 0.05). Each year after 2018 had an increased odds of PHUS use demonstrated with logistic regression (p < 0.01). PHUS was used in each US census region, and paramedics performed most of the PHUS exams (75.5%). We identified 1,060 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, 820 trauma, and 427 respiratory PHUS cases. These three cohorts accounted for 70.1% of all PHUS cases. Prehospital ultrasound use in the United States increased significantly over the study period, but remains exceedingly rare. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of dizziness and its associated factors in patients with COM at two otologic referral centres in a middle-income country. Cross-sectional study. Adults with and without COM diagnosis from two otology-referral centres in Bogotá (Colombia) were included. Dizziness and quality of life were assessed using the "Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media Questionnaire-12" (COMQ-12), and sociodemographic questionnaires were applied. Otoscopic evaluation and audiometric data were collected. A total of 231 adults. Of the 231 participants, up to 64.5% (n = 149) reported at least mild inconvenience due to dizziness. Factors associated with dizziness included female sex (aPR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.04–1.46), chronic suppurative otitis media (aPR: 3.02; 95% CI: 1.21–7.52), and severe tinnitus (aPR: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.24–2.48). An interaction was found between socioeconomic status and educational level, with more frequent reports of dizziness in the middle/high economic status and secondary education (aPR: 3.09; 95% CI: 0.52–18.55; p < 0.001). Differences of 14 points in symptom severity and 18.5 points in the total score of the COMQ-12 were found between the groups with dizziness and without dizziness. Bladder and bowel poststroke dysfunctions negatively impact patients' health. Stroke-related characteristics associated to these dysfunctions are poorly known. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of new-onset poststroke bladder and bowel dysfunctions, characterize their associated factors, and describe the dysfunctions' clinical approach. Cross-sectional study including 157 patients admitted to a single hospital's stroke unit with a first-ever stroke, during 3 months. An 18-item questionnaire was applied to assess dysfunctions pre and poststroke. The McNemar test was used to compare pre and poststroke prevalence. A logistic regression was used to estimate associations (OR, 95% CI) between individual characteristics and new-onset dysfunctions. We had 113 (72%) respondents. There was a significant increase in the prevalence of bladder and bowel dysfunctions poststroke (p < 0.001). Higher stroke severity was significantly associated with both new-onset poststroke bladder and bowel dysfunctions (OR = 15.00, 95% CI [4.92,45.76] and OR = 5.87,95%CI [2.14,16.12], respectively). Total anterior circulation strokes, cardioembolic strokes, and lower functionality at discharge were also significantly associated with both dysfunctions. Thirteen patients (11.5%) reported that health professionals addressed these dysfunctions. Poststroke bladder and bowel dysfunctions are highly prevalent. Being aware of their epidemiology helps draw attention to patients at higher risk of developing these dysfunctions, enhancing the rehabilitation process. Babbling is an important precursor to speech in infancy, and deviations from the typical babbling development can predict later difficulties in speech, language, and communication. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate babbling and early speech in Swedish extremely premature infants. Samples of babbling were collected from 20 extremely premature infants (EPT group) at the corrected age of 12 months. Data collection was home-based and consisted of an audio-video recording of each infant playing with a parent. Presence of canonical babbling (CB), and three oral stop variables distinctive of typical babbling, and consonant inventory were assessed. The assessment was performed during a standardised observation of babbling. Data from the EPT group were compared to previously collected data of a reference group of 20 10-month-old infants without known medical diagnoses. The results showed that the EPT group had a lower proportion of infants producing CB, and that they used a significantly smaller consonant inventory compared to the reference group. Although not statistically significant, oral stops were less frequently found in the EPT group. The findings of a restricted consonant inventory and low proportion of CB in the EPT group are not surprising considering that the group has been found to be at risk of speech and language delay in toddlerhood. To investigate the influence of visual contextual information on emotion recognition of ambiguous facial expressions in depression and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Method: Ambiguous facial expressions and emotional contexts representing anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness and surprise were validated in a pre-test with healthy independent raters. Afterwards, 20 healthy participants (8 women, 12 men; mean age 24.35 ± 2.85 years), 20 participants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (9 women, 11 men; mean age 40.25 ± 11.68 years) and 19 participants with depression (11 women, 8 men; mean age 43.74 ± 12.65 years) rated the emotional content of nine different faces in seven different emotion-suggesting contexts. The proportions of context-congruent answers and differences between emotion ratings in each context were analysed using non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and explorative, paired Wilcoxon tests. Correlational analyses explored the influence of clinical symptoms assessed by clinician-administered scales. Results: The overall proportion of context-congruent answers did not differ between participants with depression and schizophrenia spectrum disorders compared to healthy participants. Participants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders were more susceptible to anger-suggesting contexts and participants with depression were more susceptible to fear-suggesting contexts. Differences in emotion recognition were associated with the severity of depressive, but not psychotic, symptoms. Conclusion: Despite increased susceptibility to anger-suggesting cues in schizophrenia and to fear-suggesting cues in depression, visual contextual influence remains largely consistent with healthy participants. Preserved emotional responsiveness suggests an efficacy of emotion training but emphasizes the need for additional research focusing on other factors contributing to social interaction deficits. To explore the feasibility of an exergame prototype in residential individuals with major neurocognitive disorder (MNCD). Participants were randomly assigned to a 12-week stepping exergame training or traditional exercise (active control group). Semi-structured interviews were conducted after six and 12 weeks of exergaming. Qualitative data were thematically analysed using NVivo 12. The Short Physical Performance Battery, one minute sit-to-stand test, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Neuropsychiatric Inventory, Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, and Dementia Quality of Life were assessed at baseline and post intervention using a Quade's ANCOVA. Seven older adults with MNCD in the exergame and 11 in the active control group completed the study [mean age = 83.2 ± 6.5 years; 94.4% female; SPPB score = 7.3 ± 2.4]. Results indicated that the VITAAL exergame prototype was experienced as enjoyable and beneficial. The post-MMSE score was higher (η2=.02, p = 0.01, F = 8.1) following exergaming versus traditional exercise. The findings suggest that the exergame prototype is accepted by individuals with MNCD residing in a long-term care facility when they are able to participate and under the condition that they are extensively guided. The preliminary efficacy results revealed higher post-MMSE scores after exergaming versus traditional exercise. Future trials should confirm or refute these findings. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) biomarkers can be used to quantify microstructural changes in the cerebral white matter (WM) following injury. This prospective single-center study aimed to evaluate whether atlas-based DTI-derived metrics obtained within 1 week after stroke can predict the motor outcome at 3 months. Forty patients with small acute stroke (2–7 days after onset) involving the corticospinal tract were included. Each patient underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within 1 week and at 3 months after stroke, and the changes based on DTI-derived metrics were compared by performing WM tract atlas-based quantitative analysis. A total of 40 patients were included, with median age 63.5 years and a majority of males (72.5%). Patients were classified into good-prognosis group (mRS 0–2, n = 27) and poor-prognosis group (mRS 3–5, n = 13) by outcome. The median (25th-75th percentile) of MD (0.7 (0.6–0.7) vs. 0.7 (0.7–0.8); p = 0.049) and AD (0.6 (0.5, 0.7) vs. 0.7 (0.6, 0.8); p = 0.023) ratios within 1 week were significantly lower in the poor-prognosis group compared to the good-prognosis group. The ROC curve of the combined DTI-derived metrics model showed comparable Youden index (65.5% vs. 58.4%–65.4%) and higher specificity (96.3% vs. 69.2%–88.5%) compared to clinical indexes. The area under the ROC curve of the combined DTI-derived metrics model is comparable to those of the clinical indexes (all p > 0.1) and higher than those of the individual DTI-derived metrics parameters. Early recognition of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is important to facilitate time-sensitive care. Electroencephalography (EEG) can identify TBI, but feasibility of EEG has not been evaluated in prehospital settings. We tested the feasibility of obtaining single-channel EEG during air medical transport after trauma. We measured association between quantitative EEG features, early blood biomarkers, and abnormalities on head computerized tomography (CT). We performed a pilot prospective, observational study enrolling consecutive patients transported by critical care air ambulance from the scene of trauma to a Level I trauma center. During transport, prehospital clinicians placed a sensor on the patient's forehead to record EEG. We reviewed EEG waveforms and selected 90 seconds of recording for quantitative analysis. EEG data processing included fast Fourier transform to summarize component frequency power in the delta (0-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), and alpha (8-13 Hz) ranges. We collected blood samples on day 1 and day 3 post-injury and measured plasma levels of two brain injury biomarkers (ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 [UCH-L1] and glial fibrillary acidic protein [GFAP]). We compared predictors between individuals with and without CT-positive TBI findings. Forty subjects were enrolled, with EEG recordings successfully obtained in 34 (85%). Reasons for failure included uncharged battery (n = 5) and user error (n = 1). Data were lost in three cases. Of 31 subjects with data, interpretable EEG signal was recorded in 26 (84%). Mean age was 48 (SD 16) years, 79% were male, and 50% suffered motor vehicle crashes. Eight subjects (24%) had CT-positive TBI. Subjects with and without CT-positive TBI had similar median delta power, alpha power, and theta power. UCH-L1 and GFAP plasma levels did not differ across groups. Burnout syndrome is the result of prolonged occupational stress. Working under high-stress conditions further exacerbated by COVID-19 may impose an additional psychological burden on rehabilitation health professionals (RHPs) and affect their psycho-social health. This study was conducted to determine the burnout levels of RHPs working during the COVID-19 pandemic and to examine its relationship with various clinical and demographic data. In this cross-sectional study, participants were asked to fill out an anonymous questionnaire containing demographic information and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Three sub-dimensions of burnout; emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and personal achievement (PA) were evaluated. A total of 84 participants, most of whom were physiotherapists (56%), attended in the study. The rate of participants experiencing burnout was found to be 25%. The mean score was 20 ± 13.1, 6.7 ± 5.4, and 27.8 ± 10.1 for the EE, DP, and PA subgroups, respectively. Proportionally, 28.6% of participants had high burnout levels for the EE subgroup, 27.4% for the DP subgroup, and 60.7% for the PA subgroup. The mean DP scores were statistically significantly higher in females (p < 0.05). This study is one of the few studies examining the frequency and components of burnout syndrome in RHPs in the COVID-19 pandemic. Burnout was observed in RHPs at levels of up to 25% in the general evaluation and up to 60.7% in the subgroup analysis. To evaluate the feasibility of an exercise tolerance assessment and intervention added to the Progressive Return to Activity Clinical Recommendations (PRA-CR) in acutely concussed service members (SMs). This non-randomized, pilot trial was performed at one center. SMs in the experimental group (ERG) performed the Buffalo Concussion March-in-place Test (BCMT) at every clinic visit and were prescribed at least 20 minutes/day of targeted exercise in addition to PRA-CR. Data for the control group (SCG) were extracted from the same clinic immediately prior to ERG. SMs in both groups were assessed by the same clinician to determine return-to-duty. BCMT identified concussion-related exercise intolerance in 100% (n = 14) at screening visit (mean 3.4 days after injury) and in 0% (n = 7) who had recovered. No adverse effects were associated with BCMT. The estimated recovery time for ERG who performed the exercise intervention (n = 12) was 17.0 (12.8, 21.2) days and for SCG (n = 15) was 23.7 (19.9, 27.5) days (p = 0.039). Assessment of exercise tolerance was feasible and could be incorporated into the PRA-CR. We sought to characterize overdose and non-overdose mortality among PLWH amidst the illicit drug toxicity crisis in British Columbia, Canada. A population-based analysis of PLWH (age ≥19) in British Columbia accessing healthcare from April 1996 to March 2017 was conducted using data from the Seek and Treat for Optimal Prevention of HIV/AIDS (STOP HIV/AIDS) cohort linkage. Underlying causes of deaths were stratified into overdose and non-overdose causes. We compared (bivariate analysis) health-related characteristics and prescription history between PLWH died of overdose and non-overdose causes between April 2009 and March 2017. Among 9,180 PLWH, we observed 962 deaths (142 [14.7%] overdoses; 820 [85.2%] other causes). Compared to those who died from other causes, those who died of overdose were significantly younger (median age [Q, Q3]: 46 years [42, 52] vs. 54 years [48, 63]); had an indication of chronic pain (35.9% vs. 27.1%) and hepatitis C virus (64.8% vs. 50.4%), but fewer experienced hospitalization in the year before death. PLWH who died were most likely to be prescribed with opioids (>50%) and least likely with opioid agonist therapy (<10%) in a year before death. This quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group study developed an eight-session post-traumatic growth program for teachers who had experienced violence from students and/or parents and examined its effects on rumination, burnout, and post-traumatic growth. A convenience sample was recruited from 11 elementary schools in Jeonbuk province, South Korea. The experimental group (n = 27) participated in bi-weekly sessions over four weeks, whereas the control group (n = 27) read educational materials on post-traumatic growth during the same period. The experimental group exhibited significantly greater decreases in intrusive rumination and higher post-traumatic growth than the control group. To assess the presence of upper extremity pain after stroke over time and the course of its intensity in patients with persistent pain. Patients with stroke completed a question on the presence of upper extremity pain (yes/no) and rated its intensity with a visual analogue scale (0–10) at 3, 18, and 30 months after starting multidisciplinary rehabilitation. The presence of upper extremity pain and its intensity over time were analysed with Generalized Estimating Equations models and Linear Mixed Models, respectively. 678 patients were included. The proportions of patients reporting upper extremity pain were 41.8, 36.0, and 32.7% at 3, 18, and 30 months, respectively, with the decline in proportions reaching statistical significance (odds ratio 0.82, 95% confidence interval 0.74–0.92, p < 0.001). At all time points, in those reporting pain the median intensity was 5.0 (interquartile ranges (IQR) 4.0–7.0 at 3 and 3.0–6.0 at 18 and 30 months). In the 73 patients with persistent pain, there was no significant change in intensity over time. The proportion of patients reporting upper extremity pain after stroke was considerable, despite a significant decrease in 2.5 years. In patients reporting persistent pain, the intensity did not change over time. About one-third of patients with stroke reported upper extremity pain at 30 months after starting rehabilitation. In patients with stroke who reported persistent upper extremity pain, there was no significant change in pain intensity over time. Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a wart-like lesion mainly affecting the larynx, caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes 6 and 11. The disease affects both children and adults, and there is no cure. Surgery is the current symptom-relieving treatment; however, HPV vaccination is used as an adjuvant treatment. The aims were to study effects of HPV vaccination in RRP cases and to compare juvenile-onset to adult-onset disease and high treatment frequency (TF) to low TF cases. Medical records of RRP patients were studied from May 2006 to January 2023. Eighty-five RRP cases, tested for HPV genotypes with PapilloCheck®, were included. Vaccination- onset- and treatment analysis were performed. Twelve percent of the cases were vaccinated. The number of surgeries decreased from 2.0 to 0.8/year after HPV vaccination. Most cases had an adult-onset and less than one treatment per year. Juvenile-onset cases had a higher vaccination treatment ratio compared to adult-onset. HPV vaccination was associated with a lower number of treatments per year, supporting the use of vaccination as an adjuvant treatment. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare clinical oral conditions as well as the self-reported oral health status of biathletes and cross-country skiers (A) to age- and gender-matched non-athletic controls (C). Thirty-one A and 68 C were examined in 2020 regarding caries experience (DMF-T), partially erupted wisdom teeth, non-carious tooth wear (erosion), dental plaque biofilm, gingival inflammation, periodontal screening (PSI), salivary active matrix-metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) test and screening for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Questionnaires recorded periodontal symptoms, TMD symptoms and oral health behaviour. Group A had a lower prevalence of carious teeth and positive aMMP-8 tests, but more of them had severe gingivitis and signs of periodontitis. Both groups reported similar oral health behaviour. Only in group C, associations between aMMP-8 and periodontal findings as well as clinical findings and self-reported symptoms of TMD were identified. Group A showed a high prevalence of oral inflammation and seemed to be less aware of oral symptoms. Clinical examination seems to be necessary for periodontal/TMD screening of athletes. This study explored the effect of music on the driving performance of experienced young adult drivers with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using an interactive driving simulator with two types of scenarios. A 2 (Group: autism/neurotypical) × 2 (Music: music/no music) × 2 (Scenario: hazards/wayfinding) factorial design was used with the order of scenarios and music conditions counterbalanced. Participants were 34 neurotypical drivers and 5 drivers with ASD, all with at least 3 years of driving experience. Paired sample t-tests demonstrated no effect of music for any condition. Overall, the drivers with ASD had higher performance means than the neurotypical group with significant differences in the wayfinding scenario and the category for following regulations. Neurotypical drivers had better performance on the wayfinding scenario than the hazard scenario in maneuvers and being attentive to the environment. Although this study had a low number of drivers with ASD, it suggests drivers with ASD can perform better than neurotypical drivers, possibly because they follow road rule guidelines more consistently than neurotypical peers. We developed a standalone smartphone app for weight management for middle-aged people. Among people living in Okinawa, Japan, participants were required to have BMI 25 or greater at the time of online registration. The intervention was a 3-month duration using the following four functions: recording of walking steps, diet content and bodyweight, and reading basic health knowledge. Among 87 participants who met our study criteria, 47 (54%) adhered to the program to endline and 28 participants (60%) lost body weight (0.3-5.6 kg loss: 0.3-7.1% loss). Frequency of recording walk steps was associated with BMI reduction with beta coefficient of 0.00847 (95% confidence interval, −0.01595 to −0.00099). No cases of adverse health events were reported during our study period. A standalone app can play an important role in weight management among middle-aged people with overweight/obesity. Background: Pelvic pain is a common complaint among individuals assigned female at birth. However, few studies have explored pelvic pain among transmasculine patients on gender-affirming testosterone treatment, and most of these were performed in adult populations. Aims: The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, nature and treatment of pelvic pain among trans adolescents on testosterone. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on all trans adolescents started on gender-affirming testosterone treatment at our institution between 2007 and 2020. Results: Among 158 trans adolescents who were started on testosterone therapy and followed-up for at least six months, 37 (23.4%) reported pelvic pain, with a median interval between testosterone initiation and reported onset of pain of 1.6 months (range 0.3-6.4). The prevalence of pelvic pain was higher in patients who were receiving menstrual suppression (n = 36, 26.3%) compared to those who were not (n = 1, 4.8%), giving a risk difference of 21.5% (95% CI 9.8% to 33.2%, p = 0.028). The most common descriptive terms were "cramps" (n = 17, 45.9%) and "similar to previous period pain" (n = 8, 21.6%). A range of different pharmacological strategies were employed, including paracetamol, NSAIDs, danazol, norethisterone, medroxyprogesterone, etonogestrel implant, intra-uterine device, goserelin and pelvic floor physiotherapy, with variable outcomes. Conclusion: In conclusion, we report here – in what is to our knowledge the first time – the prevalence rate of pelvic pain in trans adolescents on gender-affirming testosterone treatment, and observe that a quarter of them described pelvic pain. Limitations of our study include its retrospective nature, which is likely to be associated with under-reporting of pelvic pain, and the limited documentation of the nature and likely causes of this pain within the medical records. Knowing how to respond effectively to an acutely deteriorating patient is a National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard and a requirement for nurse registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Authority. Literature has highlighted that a lack of knowledge, skills and confidence in healthcare professionals to perform basic life support may be a contributing factor to the high mortality and morbidity rates associated with cardiac arrest in the hospital setting. To explore first-year nursing students' knowledge and confidence to perform basic life support according to the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines before and after watching an online video lecture. A quantitative quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design to measure changes, if any, in first-year nursing students' knowledge and confidence to perform basic life support at an Australian university in 2021. The collected data were analysed using Stata, a statistical software for data sciences. Participants' mean knowledge score increased from 9.3 (SD: 2.5) in the pre-test to 13.9 (SD: 3) (p < 0.001) in the post-test (maximum possible score: 19). Participants' mean confidence score increased from 17.0 (SD: 6.3) in the pre-test to 24.5 (SD: 4.4) (p < 0.001) in the post-test (maximum possible score: 30; p < 0.001). The most significant improvement in knowledge was observed in chest compression rate, breathing/ ventilation and checking patient response. The study found that the video lecture is an effective teaching method to increase students' confidence to perform basic life support. An online video-recorded lecture can increase undergraduate student nurses' knowledge and confidence to perform basic life support. The Muscle Shortening Maneuver (MSM) is derived from Feldman's λ model of motor control, and seems to induce a more balanced agonist- antagonist-muscular action. The hypothesized mechanism of action is a modulation of the Tonic Stretch Reflex Threshold (TSRT). We designed a pilot, randomized trial aimed to explore the mechanisms of action of the technique. An ancillary objective was to research the implementation of the MSM as a stroke rehabilitation intervention. A sample of 10 participants with chronic stroke was enrolled and randomly assigned to MSM (n, 5) or conventional physical therapy (CPT) (n, 5) treatments. The TSRTs were assessed by the Montreal Spasticity Measure device. A selection of clinical and instrumental outcome measures was taken to investigate function and activity levels. Data were collected at baseline, end-of-treatment, and one month after the end-of-treatment. No adverse events were observed. In both between- and within-group post-treatment assessments, in the affected ankle the MSM group showed decreased TSRTs of the plantar flexor, increased strength of the dorsiflexor and active range of motion; also, the time needed to perform the Timed Up and Go test decreased. No changes were evident across assessments in the CPT group. The MSM seems able to modulate the TSRTs in individuals with stroke. Although with the limitations due to the pilot design, the variation in participants' responses appear to be promising. To evaluate the clinical outcomes of latanoprostene bunod 0.024% (LB) in intraocular pressure (IOP) control in patients with glaucoma. This retrospective cohort study analyzed eyes treated with LB between 01/2018 and 01/2020. Demographic and clinical data were collected at baseline and up to 24-months (mo). Primary outcomes were mean change in IOP (∆IOP) from baseline in eyes switched from a prostaglandin analogue (PGA) to LB (Group 1) vs. eyes in which LB was added as a first PGA to a glaucoma regimen (Group 2). 262 eyes of 162 patients were included. Overall, baseline IOP was 18.67 ± 5.65 mmHg. Group 1 (n = 168 [64%]) and Group 2 (n = 66 [25%]) each individually had significant ∆IOP at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 18 mo compared to baseline (p = 0.005). ∆IOP and duration of IOP control (9.5 ± 11.4 vs. 9.7 ± 9.9 months) on LB was similar between Group 1 and 2 at all time points. Additional pharmacologic or surgical intervention was required in 71 (27%) and 66 (25%) eyes, respectively, and LB was stopped in 24 (9.1%) eyes due to side effects. LB successfully reduced IOP and was well-tolerated in our cohort. PGA naivete does not seem to influence the LB efficacy or its duration of effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Parents of young children are a vulnerable group with an increased risk of stressrelated health problems compared to adults without children. Low occupational balance has been identified as a risk factor for stress-related disorders. Aim: The study aimed to describe occupational balance in parents of pre-school children and to explore potential differences between mothers and fathers. Method: Data were collected by a web-based survey based on the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11). A total of 302 working parents (200 mothers and 102 fathers) with at least one child under seven years of age were included in the study. Findings: Mothers reported lower occupational balance than fathers with a median value of 10 for mothers and 12 for fathers (p=0.029). Mothers rated significantly lower than fathers in three items; 'Balance between work, home, family, leisure, rest and sleep', 'Having sufficient time for doing obligatory occupations' and 'Balance between doing things for others and for oneself'. Conclusion: The results indicate that caring for pre-school children may negatively impact both parents, impacting mothers' occupational balance to a greater degree. Significance: Occupational therapists' knowledge could be utilised to increase awareness of the importance of occupational balance within health services and improve mothers' occupational balance. To determine the effects of Perturbation-based Balance Training (PBT) on postural responses and falls in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and compare the results with conventional balance training (CBT). Thirty-four PwMS were randomized to receive 4 weeks of PBT or CBT. Latency of postural responses to external perturbations, Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG), 10-meter-walk (10MW), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC) were measured at baseline and post-training. Also, the proportion of fallers and fall rate were assessed at a 3-month follow-up. The latency of postural responses significantly decreased in PBT compared to CBT. TUG, 10MW, BBS, and ABC, at post-training, and relative risk of falls and fall rate at 3-month follow-up had no statistically significant between-group differences. The results show that PBT is at least as effective as CBT in improving balance and decreasing falls, while it has superiority over CBT whenever the clinicians mainly aim to improve reactive balance strategies. Future studies with a larger sample size are warranted to complement the results of this study. Perturbation-based Balance Training is at least as effective as conventional balance training (CBT) in improving proactive postural control in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Objective: A study was undertaken to explore the differences in nutrition knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices and their correlations among adults in both urban and rural communities in the Free State province of South Africa. Design: This study forms part of the cross-sectional Assuring Health for All in the Free-State (AHA-FS) study. Setting: The AHA-FS study is conducted in urban and rural parts of the Free State province of South Africa. The rural and urban stages of the study were conducted in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Subjects: The sample included 846 adult household members, aged between 25 and 65 years, from both rural and urban areas of the Free State province. Outcome measures: Nutrition knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices were measured. Results: The sample included predominantly females (78.2%). Rural adults had significantly better nutrition knowledge (p < 0.001), positive attitudes (p < 0.001) and positive beliefs (p < 0.001) and their nutrition knowledge and attitudes (r = 0.27, p < 0.001), nutrition knowledge and beliefs (r = 0.16, p < 0.001), and nutrition attitudes and beliefs (r = 0.38, p < 0.001) were significantly correlated with each other. However, nutrition knowledge, attitudes and beliefs were not correlated with nutrition practices among our sample in either the urban or rural setting. Conclusion and implication: The results of the current study confirm that relevant and culturally acceptable nutrition education interventions for translating nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes and beliefs into practices are required. There are studies reporting different results on whether there is an increased incidence of cardiovascular problems in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of this study was to examine carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), an early marker of atherosclerosis in children and adolescents with ASD. This single-center case-control study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital. Eighty-five children (36 children with autism and 49 healthy controls) aged 6–18 were enrolled. After a clinical interview, Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) and Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) were filled out and laboratory measures were collected for ASD group. Anthropometric measurements (height, weight, waist and hip) of each participant were assessed. The cIMT was measured with an ultrasound probe on both sides of the neck. Age, gender, body mass index percentile and waist/hip ratio adjusted right/left common carotid arteries IMT and right/left bulb IMT were statistically significantly higher in the autism group than controls (0.45 ± 0.01 mm and 0.55 ± 0.01 mm, respectively, p < 0.001). We performed multiple linear regression analysis to determine statistically significant related factors of the cIMT in ASD. Early onset of autism symptoms were related with high carotid IMT (β = −0.496, p = 0.01). These findings suggest that atherosclerosis may begin earlier in children with ASD, which is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood. The cIMT measurement, which is an easy and noninvasive method in the cardiovascular assessment and follow-up can be recommended for clinical use for individuals with ASD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pain is prevalent after most TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS) procedures and may limit function i.e. swallowing. Currently, there is limited knowledge regarding optimal pain treatment in TORS. This clinical trial randomized patients to either a high-dose dexamethasone or low-dose dexamethasone treatment in addition to a multimodal basic analgesic protocol. The aim of the trial was to investigate the pain intensity during rest and swallowing using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) after TORS lingual tonsillectomy. Secondary outcomes were acceptable food consistency, nausea, vomiting, opioid rescue usage, length of hospitalization, feeding tube placements, readmissions, blood glucose levels and postoperative complications. The trial was conducted between August 2020 and October 2022. Eligible patients were patients scheduled for TORS-L treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome or as part of the diagnostic work-up of head and neck carcinoma of unknown primary. Eighteen patients were and randomized 1:1. There were overall no significant differences between groups in the reported VAS scores during rest or swallowing (p ≥.05). Overall, there were no differences in the secondary outcomes. There were no differences in the pain intensity in the two treatment groups allocated to a basic multimodal analgesic package and either high-dose dexamethasone or low-dose dexamethasone treatment.
