The precise tie-points (TPs) on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are a critical cornerstone in the global digital elevation model (DEM) and digital ortho map (DOM) production process. While there are abundant studies on SAR TPs matching, improvement opportunities persist in large areas. The correspondences have pixel-level errors during geocoding, which result in misalignment between global products. Consequently, this paper proposed a robust method for SAR images TPs matching, which consists of three key steps: (1) interest point extraction based on the dynamic Harris area entropy (DHAE) grid; (2) adaptive determination of template size; (3) normalized cross correlation (NCC) template matching. DHAE is a regional texture information grid based on the SAR-Harris map, and it is achieved through dynamic block division. Generating the DHAE grid over SAR images enables the extraction of interest points that have regional feature representation and distribution uniformity. A variable-size matching template is adaptively determined based on DHAE to enhance template quality while maintaining computational efficiency. Subsequently, the NCC algorithm is employed to find subpixel-precise correspondences. The proposed method is applied on TPs matching in 57 Terra-SAR images, which cover a large geographical area. Furthermore, the overlapping area is partitioned into five segments according to different coverage types. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other template matching methods. For all coverage types, the proposed method exhibits high-precision sub-pixel results that reach up to 38.64% in terms of the relative positioning error (RPE), particularly in texture-weak and large areas. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) change detection provides a powerful tool for continuous, reliable, and objective observation of the Earth, supporting a wide range of applications that require regular monitoring and assessment of changes in the natural and built environment. In this paper, we introduce a novel SAR image change detection method based on principal component analysis and two-level clustering. First, two difference images of the log-ratio and mean-ratio operators are computed, then the principal component analysis fusion model is used to fuse the two difference images, and a new difference image is generated. To incorporate contextual information during the feature extraction phase, Gabor wavelets are used to obtain the representation of the difference image across multiple scales and orientations. The maximum magnitude across all orientations at each scale is then concatenated to form the Gabor feature vector. Following this, a cascading clustering algorithm is developed within this discriminative feature space by merging the first-level fuzzy c-means clustering with the second-level neighbor rule. Ultimately, the two-level combination of the changed and unchanged results produces the final change map. Coastal sediment grain size is an important factor in determining coastal morphodynamics. In this study, we explore a novel approach for retrieving the median sediment grain size (D50) of gravel-dominated beaches using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) spaceborne imagery. We assessed this by using thirty-six Sentinel-1 (C-band SAR) satellite images acquired in May and June 2022 and 2023, and three NovaSAR (S-band SAR) satellite images acquired in May and June 2022, for three different training sites and one test site across England (the UK). The results from the Sentinel-1 C-band data show strong positive correlations (R2 ≥ 0.75 ) between the D50 and the backscatter coefficients for 15/18 of the resultant models. The models were subsequently used to derive predictions of D50 for the test site, with the models which exhibited the strongest correlations resulting in Mean Absolute Errors (MAEs) in the range 2.26–5.47 mm. No correlation (R2 = 0.04) was found between the backscatter coefficients from the S-band NovaSAR data and D50. These results highlight the potential to derive near-real time estimates of coastal sediment grain size for gravel beaches to better inform coastal erosion and monitoring programs. The internal waves in the South China Sea are highly correlated with the tidal currents in the Luzon Strait, which makes it possible to establish an internal wave prediction model based on internal wave kinematics. However, the kinematic model requires the input of the exact location and time of the initial internal wave for which the generation mechanism of internal waves in the northern South China Sea must be well understood. By analyzing the internal wave field in the northern South China Sea (SCS) simulated using the MIT General Circulation Model (MITgcm) and observations from satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and mooring temperature–salinity–depth (TSD) chains, the source regions and propagation initiation times of internal waves are identified for three typical tidal phases, i.e., the diurnal-tide-dominated phase (DTP), transition tide phase (TTP), and semidiurnal-tide-dominated phase (STP). The generation procedures of Type A and Type B internal waves are discussed in detail with those data. The present study reveals that Type A and Type B waves are generated at the eastern and western ridges, respectively, and both commence their westward propagation at the peak of the eastward tidal flow. The dynamics of lee waves and the resonance effect with double ridges constitute the generation mechanisms of internal waves in the northern SCS. Combined with varying configurations of tidal conditions, topography, and stratification, the generation procedures of Type A and Type B waves in the DTP, TTP, and STP are elucidated with the generation mechanism in a unified and self-consistent way. In short, during DTP, weaker A waves alternate with weaker B waves each day; during TTP, strong A waves and strong B waves appear alternately every day; and there are two weak A waves per day during the STP. The generation mechanism can help in developing future empirical models for generating internal waves using tidal currents, topography, and stratification without requiring complex fluid dynamics calculations. In order to achieve miniaturization, short-range radar (SRR) generally adopts millimeter-wave (MMW) radar with a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) system, which may make the stop–go–stop assumption in traditional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging algorithms invalid. In addition, in order to observe a large enough area, SRR often needs a wide radar beam, which may cause serious range–azimuth coupling when using SRR for SAR imaging. The above two problems may make the traditional SAR imaging algorithm invalid in SRR SAR imaging. Taking the SRR SAR imaging application into account, traditional frequency domain SAR imaging algorithms are analyzed and improved in this paper. Firstly, the intra-pulse motion (IPM) caused by the FMCW system and the two-dimensional coupling (TDC) in the case of a wide beam are analyzed. Subsequently, the applicability of the range Doppler algorithm (RDA), the frequency scaling algorithm (FSA) and the range migration algorithm (RMA) for SRR SAR is analyzed. Then, improvement measures are put forward to address the aliasing and folding phenomena caused by the wide-beam problem in the FSA and RMA, respectively. Due to the expanding population and the constantly changing climate, food production is now considered a crucial concern. Although passive satellite remote sensing has already demonstrated its capabilities in accurate crop development monitoring, its limitations related to sunlight and cloud cover significantly restrict real-time temporal monitoring resolution. Considering synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology, which is independent of the Sun and clouds, SAR remote sensing can be a perfect alternative to passive remote sensing methods. However, a variety of SAR sensors and delivered SAR indices present different performances in such context for different vegetation species. Therefore, this work focuses on comparing various SAR-derived indices from C-band and (Sentinel-1) and X-band (TerraSAR-X) data with the in situ information (phenp; pgy development, vegetation height and soil moisture) in the context of tracking the phenological development of corn, winter wheat, rye, canola, and potato. For this purpose, backscattering coefficients in VV and VH polarizations (σ V V 0 , σ V H 0 ), interferometric coherence, and the dual pol radar vegetation index (DpRVI) were calculated. To reduce noise in time series data and evaluate which filtering method presents a higher usability in SAR phenology tracking, signal filtering, such as Savitzky–Golay and moving average, with different parameters, were employed. The achieved results present that, for various plant species, different sensors (Sentinel-1 or TerraSAR-X) represent different performances. For instance, σ V H 0 of TerraSAR-X offered higher consistency with corn development (r = 0.81), while for canola σ V H 0 of Sentinel-1 offered higher performance (r = 0.88). Generally, σ V V 0 , σ V H 0 performed better than DpRVI or interferometric coherence. Time series filtering makes it possible to increase an agreement between phenology development and SAR-delivered indices; however, the Savitzky–Golay filtering method is more recommended. Besides phenological development, high correspondences can be found between vegetation height and some of SAR indices. River water surface extent can be extracted from optical and radar satellite images; this is useful for estimating streamflow from space. The radiation characteristics of open water from the visible and microwave bands are different and provide independent information. In this study, for the purpose of improving streamflow estimation from space for data-sparse regions, a method that combines satellite optical and radar images data for streamflow estimation using a machine learning technique was proposed. The method was demonstratedthrough a case study in the river segment upstream of the Ganzi gauging station on the Yalong River, China. Utilizing the support vector regression (SVR) model, the feasibility of different combinations of water surface area derived from Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar images (AREA_SAR), modified normalized difference water index derived from Landsat 8 images (MNDWI), and reflectance ratios between NIR and SWIR channels derived from MODIS images (RNIR/RSWIR) for streamflow estimation were evaluated through three experiments. In Experiment I, three models using AREA_SAR (Model 1), MNDWI (Model 2), and a combination of AREA_SAR and MNDWI (Model 3) were built; the mean relative error (MRE) and mean absolute error (MAE) of streamflow estimates corresponding to the SVR model using both AREA_SAR and MNDWI (Model 3) were 0.19 and 31.6 m3/s for the testing dataset, respectively, and were lower than two models using AREA_SAR (Model 1) or MNDWI (Model 2) solely as inputs. In Experiment II, three models with AREA_SAR (Model 4), RNIR/RSWIR (Model 5), and a combination of AREA_SAR and RNIR/RSWIR (Model 6) as inputs were developed; the MRE and MAE for the model using AREA_SAR and RNIR/RSWIR (Model 6) were 0.25 and 56.5 m3/s, respectively, which outperformed the two models treating AREA_SAR (Model 4) or MNDWI (Model 5) as single types of inputs. In Experiment III, three models using AREA_SAR (Model 7), MNDWI, and RNIR/RSWIR (Model 8) and the combination of AREA_SAR, MNDWI and RNIR/RSWIR (Model 9) were built; combining all three types of satellite observations (Model 9) exhibited the highest accuracy, for which the MRE and MAE were 0.18 and 18.4 m3/s, respectively. The results of all three experiments demonstrated that integrating optical and microwave observations could improve the accuracy of streamflow estimates using a data-driven model; the proposed method has great potential for near-real-time estimations of flood magnitude or to reconstruct past variations in streamflow using historical satellite images in data-sparse regions. Urban landslides have brought challenges to developing countries undergoing urbanization. Rapid approaches to assess ground deformation are required when facing the challenge of insufficient geological survey methods. Additionally, it is indeed a challenge to map landslide-affected areas, especially precipitation-induced landslides, through optical remote sensing methods. This study applied SAR change detection methods to map the slope failure event of the San Jorge Kantutani landfill site in La Paz, Bolivia, which occurred in April 2019, and Multi-Temporal Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (MTInSAR) methods to assess pre- and post-failure ground stability related to this event. We found that the amplitude information of high-resolution COSMO-SkyMed SAR imagery and its texture information can be very useful in landslide mapping, especially in situations in which optical images are not available because of complex meteorological conditions and the similar spectral characteristics between the original land cover and landslide deposits. The MTInSAR analyses found that there was already significant deformation of more than 50 mm/year along the slope direction over this site before the landslide, and such deformation could be clearly discriminated from the surrounding environment. After the landslide event and the remobilization of the landslide deposit, the slope still shows a deformation velocity of more than 30 mm/year. The SAR amplitude change detection and MTInSAR fully exploited the SAR data in landslide studies and were useful in back analyzing the occurred landslides; this could be a good method for monitoring the ground stability of La Paz or even on a national scale over the long term for reducing the catastrophic effects of geological hazards in this landslide-prone city. This paper presents a deep framework EddyDet to automatically detect oceanic eddies in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The EddyDet has been developed using the Mask Region with Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask RCNN) framework, incorporating two new branches: Edge Head and Mask Intersection over Union (IoU) Head. The Edge Head can learn internal texture information implicitly, and the Mask IoU Head improves the quality of predicted masks. A SAR dataset for Oceanic Eddy Detection (SOED) is specifically constructed to evaluate the effectiveness of the EddyDet model in detecting oceanic eddies. We demonstrate that the EddyDet is capable of achieving acceptable eddy detection results under the condition of limited training samples, which outperforms a Mask RCNN baseline in terms of average precision. The combined Edge Head and Mask IoU Head have the ability to describe the characteristics of eddies more correctly, while the EddyDet shows great potential in practice use accurately and time efficiently, saving manual labor to a large extent. The Arctic is experiencing the greatest increase in air temperature on Earth. This significant climatic change is leading to a significant positive trend of increasing wave heights and greater coastal erosion. This in turn effects local economies and ecosystems. Increasing wave energy is one of the main drivers of this alarming trend. However, the data on spatial and temporal patterns of wave heights in the Arctic are either coarse, interpolated or limited to point measurements. The aim of this study is to overcome this shortcoming by using remote sensing data. In this study, the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite TerraSAR-X (TS-X) and TanDEM-X (TD-X) imagery are used to obtain sea state information with a high spatial resolution in Arctic nearshore waters in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. From the entire archive of the TS-X/TD-X StripMap mode with coverage around 30 km × 50 km acquired between 2009 and 2020 around Herschel Island, Qikiqtaruk (HIQ), all the ice-free scenes were processed. The resulting dataset of 175 collocated scenes was used to map the significant wave height ( H s ) and to link spatial and temporal patterns to local coastal processes. Sea state parameters are estimated in raster format with a 600 m step using the empirical algorithm CWAVE_EX. The statistics of the H s were aggregated according to spatial variability, seasonality and wind conditions. The results show that the spatial wave climate is clearly related to the dominant wind regime and seasonality. For instance, the aggregation of all the scenes recorded in July between 2009 and 2020 results in an average of 0.82 m H s , while in October the average H s is almost 0.40 m higher. The analysis by wind direction shows that fetch length and wind speed are likely the most important variables influencing the spatial variability. A larger fetch under NW conditions results in a mean wave height of 0.92 m, while waves generated under ESE conditions are lower at 0.81 m on average. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supervised machine learning algorithms usually require huge labeled data sets to produce sufficiently good results. For many applications, these data sets are still not available today, and the reasons for this can be manifold. As a solution, the missing training data can be generated by fast simulators. This procedure is well studied and allows filling possible gaps in the training data, which can further improve the results of a machine learning model. For this reason, this article deals with the development of a two-dimensional electromagnetic field simulator for modeling the response of a radar sensor in an imaging system based on the synthetic aperture radar principle. The creation of completely random scenes is essential to achieve data sets with large variance. Therefore, special emphasis is placed on the development of methods that allow creating random objects, which can then be assembled into an entire scene. In the context of this contribution, we focus on humanitarian demining with regard to improvised explosive devices using a ground-penetrating radar system. This is an area where the use of trained classifiers is of great importance, but in practice, there are little to no labeled datasets for the training process. The simulation results show good agreement with the measurement results obtained in a previous contribution, demonstrating the possibility of enhancing sparse training data sets with synthetic data. This paper presents a trajectory determination and optimization method of multirotors equipped with a single-channel radar to obtain 3D Synthetic Aperture Radar imaging. The result is a realistic trajectory that allows to obtain an imaging of the assumed quality in less time than using a multi-pass trajectory. The optimization criteria, in addition to the cross-range resolution, are the Peak Sidelobe Ratio (PSLR), Integrated Sidelobe Ratio (ISLR), and time of flight. The algorithm is based on a realistic motion model of the radar platform. This paper presents all the steps of the algorithm and provides simulation results that show its practical applicability. The digital beamforming synthetic aperture radar (DBF-SAR) is proposed by scholars as a promising solution to overcome the constraint of the minimum antenna area of the traditional single-channel SAR to achieve high resolution and wide swath (HRWS) by scan-on-receive (SCORE) in the elevation multiple channel. However, the inevitable channel imbalance between the elevation channels of DBF-SAR will degrade the DBF-SAR image quality. In this paper, we present a method to estimate the sampling time delay error, amplitude error and phase error based on the external calibration data. For the sampling time delay deviation, we adopt to calculate the statistical average of the position deviation of several external calibration points in the reference channel image with that of the error channel image. To avoid noise interference, we image the DBF-SAR original echo-carrying amplitude information to obtain the amplitude error between channels by dividing the absolute values of the complex image data of the error channel. Due to the phase error between channels, the image contrast will decrease. Therefore, the problem of estimating the phase error can be transformed into the problem of maximizing the image contrast. So, in this paper, we use the gradient descent method to optimally estimate the phase error. Mangrove forests, mostly found in the intertidal zone, are among the highest-productivity ecosystems and have great ecological and economic value. The accurate mapping of mangrove forests is essential for the scientific management and restoration of mangrove ecosystems. However, it is still challenging to perform the rapid and accurate information mapping of mangrove forests due to the complexity of mangrove forests themselves and their environments. Utilizing multi-source remote sensing data is an effective approach to address this challenge. Feature extraction and selection, as well as the selection of classification models, are crucial for accurate mangrove mapping using multi-source remote sensing data. This study constructs multi-source feature sets based on optical (Sentinel-2) and SAR (synthetic aperture radar) (C-band: Sentinel-1; L-band: ALOS-2) remote sensing data, aiming to compare the impact of three feature selection methods (RFS, random forest; ERT, extremely randomized tree; MIC, maximal information coefficient) and four machine learning algorithms (DT, decision tree; RF, random forest; XGBoost, extreme gradient boosting; LightGBM, light gradient-boosting machine) on classification accuracy, identify sensitive feature variables that contribute to mangrove mapping, and formulate a classification framework for accurately recognizing mangrove forests. The experimental results demonstrated that using the feature combination selected via the ERT method could obtain higher accuracy with fewer features compared to other methods. Among the feature combinations, the visible bands, shortwave infrared bands, and the vegetation indices constructed from these bands contributed the greatest to the classification accuracy. The classification performance of optical data was significantly better than SAR data in terms of data sources. The combination of optical and SAR data could improve the accuracy of mangrove mapping to a certain extent (0.33% to 4.67%), which is essential for the research of mangrove mapping in a larger area. The XGBoost classification model performed optimally in mangrove mapping, with the highest overall accuracy of 95.00% among all the classification models. The results of the study show that combining optical and SAR remote sensing data with the ERT feature selection method and XGBoost classification model has great potential for accurate mangrove mapping at a regional scale, which is important for mangrove restoration and protection and provides a reliable database for mangrove scientific management. Coastal wind speed gradients relevant for offshore windfarming are analysed based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The study concentrates on situations with offshore wind directions in the German Bight using SAR scenes from the European satellites Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B. High resolution wind fields at 10 m height are derived from the satellite data set and respective horizontal wind speed gradients are investigated up to about 170 km offshore. The wind speed gradients are classified according to their general shape with about 60% of the cases showing an overall increase of wind speeds with growing distance from the coast. About half of the remaining cases show an overall wind speed decrease and the other half a decrease with a subsequent increase at larger distances from the coast. An empirical model is fitted to the horizontal wind speed gradients, which has three main parameters, namely, the wind speed over land, the equilibrium wind speed over sea far offshore, and a characteristic adjustment length scale. For the cases with overall wind speed increase, a mean absolute difference of about 2.6 m/s is found between wind speeds over land and wind speeds far offshore. The mean normalised wind speed increase with respect to the land conditions is estimated as 40%. In terms of wind power density at 10 m height this corresponds to an absolute average growth by 0.3 kW/m2 and a normalised increase by 160%. The distance over which the wind speed grows to 95% of the maximum wind speed shows large variations with maximum above 170 km and a mean of 67 km. The impact of the atmospheric boundary layer stability on horizontal wind speed gradients is investigated using additional information on air and sea temperature differences. The absolute SAR-derived wind speed increase offshore is usually higher in unstable situations and the respective adjustment distance is shorter. Furthermore, we have found atypical cases with a wind speed decrease offshore to be often connected to stable atmospheric conditions. The Intermittent Small Baseline Subset approach to Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data was originally devised as a way to recover information from regions with intermittent coherence, making it particularly useful in agricultural regions or those featuring significant vegetation. However, as modern data products grow in size, the increased computational complexity that this methodology demands makes processing more daunting. Here, we present a solution: leveraging the Bifrost data processing framework and GPUs, we analyze Sentinel-1 data covering a large region of northern California and are able to achieve dramatic speed-ups on the order of 300–400 times faster than CPU-bound implementations of ISBAS, processing the entire dataset in only 5 h. Three-dimensional SAR imaging of urban buildings is currently a hotspot in the research area of remote sensing. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) offers all-time, all-weather, high-resolution capacity, and is an important tool for the monitoring of building health. Buildings have geometric distortion in conventional 2D SAR images, which brings great difficulties to the interpretation of SAR images. This paper proposes a novel Rotating SAR (RSAR) mode, which acquires 3D information of buildings from two different angles in a single rotation. This new RSAR mode takes the center of a straight track as its rotation center, and obtains images of the same facade of a building from two different angles. By utilizing the differences in geometric distortion of buildings in the image pair, the 3D structure of the building is reconstructed. Compared to the existing tomographic SAR or circular SAR, this method does not require multiple flights in different elevations or observations from varying aspect angles, and greatly simplifies data acquisition. This paper presents a statistical approach to identify the underlying roughness characteristics in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) intensity data. The physical modeling of this kind of data allows the use of the Gamma distribution in the presence of fully developed speckle, i.e., when there are infinitely many independent backscatterers per resolution cell, and none dominates the return. Such areas are often called "homogeneous" or "textureless" regions. The G I 0 distribution is also a widely accepted law for heterogeneous and extremely heterogeneous regions, i.e., areas where the fully developed speckle hypotheses do not hold. We propose three test statistics to distinguish between homogeneous and inhomogeneous regions, i.e., between gamma and G I 0 distributed data, both with a known number of looks. The first test statistic uses a bootstrapped non-parametric estimator of Shannon entropy, providing a robust assessment in uncertain distributional assumptions. The second test uses the classical coefficient of variation (CV). The third test uses an alternative form of estimating the CV based on the ratio of the mean absolute deviation from the median to the median. We apply our test statistic to create maps of p-values for the homogeneity hypothesis. Finally, we show that our proposal, the entropy-based test, outperforms existing methods, such as the classical CV and its alternative variant, in identifying heterogeneity when applied to both simulated and actual data. The use of multiple synthetic aperture radar polarizations can improve biomass estimations compared to using a single polarization. In this study, we compared predictions of aboveground biomass change from ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 backscatter using linear regression based on (1) the cross-polarization channels, (2) the co- and cross-polarizations from fully polarimetric SAR, (3) Freeman–Durden polarimetric decomposition, and (4) the polarimetric radar vegetation index (RVI). Additionally, the impact of forest structure on the sensitivity of the polarimetric backscatter to AGB and AGB change was assessed. The biomass consisted of mainly coniferous trees at the hemi-boreal test site Remningstorp, located in southern Sweden. We found some improvements in the predictions when quad-polarized data (RMSE = 79.4 tons/ha) were used instead of solely cross-polarized data (RMSE = 84.9 tons/ha). However, when using Freeman–Durden decomposition, the prediction accuracy improved further (RMSE = 69.7 tons/ha), and the highest accuracy was obtained with the radar vegetation index (RMSE = 50.4 tons/ha). The corresponding R2 values ranged from 0.45 to 0.82. The bias was less than 1 t/ha for all models. An analysis of forest variables showed that the sensitivity to AGB was reduced for high values of basal-area-weighted mean height, basal area, and stem density when predicting absolute AGB, but the best change prediction model was sensitive to changes larger than the apparent saturation point for AGB state estimates. We conclude that by using fully polarimetric SAR images, forest biomass changes can be estimated more accurately compared to using single- or dual-polarization images. The Cyprus Continuously Operating Natural Hazards Monitoring and Prevention System, abbreviated CyCLOPS, is a national strategic research infrastructure devoted to systematically studying geohazards in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa (EMMENA) region. Amongst others, CyCLOPS comprises six permanent sites, each housing a Tier-1 GNSS reference station co-located with two calibration-grade corner reflectors (CRs). The latter are strategically positioned to account for both the ascending and descending tracks of SAR satellite missions, including the ESA's Sentinel-1. As of June 2021, CyCLOPS has reached full operational capacity and plays a crucial role in monitoring the geodynamic regime within the southeastern Mediterranean area. Additionally, it actively tracks landslides occurring in the western part of Cyprus. Although CyCLOPS primarily concentrates on geohazard monitoring, its infrastructure is also configured to facilitate the radiometric calibration and geometric validation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Consequently, this study evaluates the performance of Sentinel-1A SAR by exploiting the CyCLOPS network to determine key parameters including spatial resolution, sidelobe levels, Radar Cross-Section (RCS), Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR), phase stability, and localization accuracy, through Point Target Analysis (PTA). The findings reveal the effectiveness of the CyCLOPS infrastructure to maintain high-quality radiometric parameters in SAR imagery, with consistent spatial resolution, controlled sidelobe levels, and reliable RCS and SCR values that closely adhere to theoretical expectations. Inland water level and its dynamics are key components in the global water cycle and land surface hydrology, significantly influencing climate variability and water resource management. Satellite observations, in particular altimetry missions, provide inland water level time series for nearly three decades. Space-based remote sensing is regarded as a cost-effective technique that provides measurements of global coverage and homogeneous accuracy in contrast to in-situ sensors. The advent of Open-Loop Tracking Command (OLTC), and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mode strengthened the use of altimetry missions for inland water level monitoring. However, it is still very challenging to obtain accurate measurements of water level over narrow rivers and small lakes. This scoping systematic literature review summarizes and disseminates the research findings, highlights major results, and presents the limitations regarding inland water level monitoring from satellite observations between 2018 and 2022. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline and through a double screening process, 48 scientific publications were selected meeting the eligibility criteria. To summarize the achievements of the previous 5 years, we present fundamental statistical results of the publications, such as the annual number of publications, scientific journals, keywords, and study regions per continent and type of inland water body. Also, publications associated with specific satellite missions were analyzed. The findings show that Sentinel-3 is the dominant satellite mission, while the ICESat-2 laser altimetry mission has exhibited a high growth trend. Furthermore, publications including radar altimetry missions were charted based on the retracking algorithms, presenting the novel and improved methods of the last five years. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a powerful tool for detecting and imaging targets in enclosed environments, such as tunnels and underground garages. However, SAR performance is degraded by multipath effects, which occur when electromagnetic waves are reflected by obstacles, such as walls, and interfere with the direct signal. This results in the formation of multipath ghost images, which obscure the true target and reduce the image quality. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel method based on multi-angle observation. This method exploits the fact that the position of ghost images changes depending on the angle of the radar, while the position of the true target remains stable. By collecting and processing multiple data sets from different angles, we can eliminate the ghost images and enhance the target image. In addition, we introduce a center vector distance algorithm to address the complexity and computational intensity of existing multipath suppression algorithms. This algorithm, which defines the primary direction of multi-angle vectors from stable scattering centers as the center vector, processes and synthesizes multiple data sets from multi-angle observations. It calculates the distance of pixel intensity sequences in the composite data image from the center vector. Pixels within a specified threshold are used for imaging, and the final result is obtained. Aircraft targets, as high-value subjects, are a focal point in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image interpretation. To tackle challenges like limited SAR aircraft datasets and shortcomings in existing detection algorithms (complexity, poor performance, weak generalization), we present the Feature Enhancement and Multi-Scales Fusion Network (FEMSFNet) for SAR aircraft detection. FEMSFNet employs diverse image augmentation and integrates optimized Squeeze-and-Excitation Networks (SE) with residual network (ResNet) in a SdE-Resblock structure for a lightweight yet accurate model. It introduces ssppf-CSP module, an improved pyramid pooling model, to prevent receptive field deviation in deep network training. Tailored for SAR aircraft detection, FEMSFNet optimizes loss functions, emphasizing both speed and accuracy. Positioning a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) receiver at a significant distance from an illuminator in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) enables wide-angle repeat-pass bistatic interferometry. It's crucial to define the positioning limits of the receiver with respect to the illuminator to ensure reasonable coherences, altitudes of ambiguity, and a suitable common wavenumber support. I extended the standard monostatic formula, which yields the change in the interferometric travel path due to the vertical baseline. In the wide-angle bistatic case, the range-azimuth coordinate system is no longer orthogonal and we must consider the full 2D vector nature of the LOS orthogonal components. The two vertical baselines and the horizontal baseline of the receiver are needed to parameterize the system. Their impact on the interferometric coherence is quantified and bistatic limits are seen to be more flexible than those in the monostatic case due to the combination of independent baselines. I estimated the coherence, and then extended the analysis to the wavenumber domain, to quantify the common spectral support due to the wavenumber shifts due to the three baselines. The analysis carried out geometrically allows for combining together the effects of the transmitter's and receiver's vertical baselines and thus representing the residual spectral fraction with two instead of three parameters. This paper proposes a texture-enhanced network (TENet) for intertidal sediment and habitat classification using multiband multipolarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The architecture introduces the texture enhancement module (TEM) into the UNet framework to explicitly learn global texture information from SAR images. The study sites are chosen from the northern part of the intertidal zones in the German Wadden Sea. Results show that the presented TENet model is able to detail the intertidal surface types, including land, seagrass, bivalves, bright sands/beach, water, sediments, and thin coverage of vegetation or bivalves. To further assess its performance, we quantitatively compared our results from the TENet model with different instance segmentation models for the same areas of interest. We describe an efficient and cost-effective data access mechanism for Sentinel-1 Terrain Observation with Progressive Scans (TOPS) mode bursts. Our data access mechanism enables burst-based data access and processing, thereby eliminating the European Space Agency's (ESA's) Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex (SLC) data packaging conventions as a bottleneck to large scale processing. The pipeline throughput is now determined by the available computation resources and the efficiency of the analysis algorithms. For targeted infrastructure monitoring studies, we are able to generate coregistered, geocoded stacks of SLCs for any area of interest (AOI) in the world, in a few minutes. In addition, we describe our global scale radar backscatter and interferometric products, and associated pipeline design decisions that ensure geolocation consistency across the suite of derived products from Sentinel-1 data. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active microwave sensor that has attracted widespread attention due to its ability to observe the ground around the clock. Research on multi-scale and multi-category target detection methods holds great significance in the fields of maritime resource management and wartime reconnaissance. However, complex scenes often influence SAR object detection, and the diversity of target scales also brings challenges to research. This paper proposes a multi-category SAR image object detection model, CCDS-YOLO, based on YOLOv5s, to address these issues. Embedding the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) in the feature extraction part of the backbone network enables the model's ability to extract and fuse spatial information and channel information. The 1 × 1 convolution in the feature pyramid network and the first layer convolution of the detection head are replaced with the expanded convolution, Coordinate Conventional (CoordConv), forming a CRD-FPN module. This module more accurately perceives the spatial details of the feature map, enhancing the model's ability to handle regression tasks compared to traditional convolution. In the detector segment, a decoupled head is utilized for feature extraction, offering optimal and effective feature information for the classification and regression branches separately. The traditional Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) is substituted with the Soft Non-Maximum Suppression (Soft-NMS), successfully reducing the model's duplicate detection rate for compact objects. Based on the experimental findings, the approach presented in this paper demonstrates excellent results in multi-category target recognition for SAR images. Empirical comparisons are conducted on the filtered MSAR dataset. Compared with YOLOv5s, the performance of CCDS-YOLO has been significantly improved. The mAP@0.5 value increases by 3.3% to 92.3%, the precision increases by 3.4%, and the mAP@0.5:0.95 increases by 6.7%. The Land Use Change Alert (LUCA) dataset was developed for effective and timely monitoring of global forest changes that are mostly associated with human activities. Near- real-time changes of forest land use are mapped at 0.05 ha minimum mapping unit for all forest types across the Earth's ecoregions, every two weeks. LUCA is based on Sentinel-1 cloud penetrating synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations to circumvent limitations of optical imagery from pervasive cloud cover over forested areas globally, and especially in the tropics. The methodology is based on a combination of time-series change detection and machine learning analytics to achieve high accuracy of alerts across all ecoregions and landscapes globally with an average area-adjusted users and producers accuracy of 83% and 63%, respectively. The bi-weekly global alert maps capture forest clearing associated with deforestation and industrial timber harvesting, along with forest degradation associated with selective logging, fragmentation, fire, and roads. The product was developed and released publicly through Google Earth Engine to allow for the rapid assessment of land use change activities, quantifying patterns and processes driving forest change and dynamics across forest ecoregions. Excluding rough areas with surface rocks and craters is critical for the safety of landing missions, such as China's Chang'e-7 mission, in the permanently shadowed region (PSR) of the lunar south pole. Binned digital elevation model (DEM) data can describe the undulating surface, but the DEM data can hardly detect surface rocks because of median-averaging. High-resolution images from a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can be used to map discrete rocks and small craters according to their strong backscattering. This study utilizes the You Only Look Once version 7 (YOLOv7) tool to detect varying-sized craters in SAR images. It also employs the Markov random field (MRF) algorithm to identify surface rocks, which are usually difficult to detect in DEM data. The results are validated by optical images and DEM data in non-PSR. With the assistance of the DEM data, regions with slopes larger than 10° are excluded. YOLOv7 and MRF are applied to detect craters and rocky surfaces and exclude regions with steep slopes in the PSRs of craters Shoemaker, Slater, and Shackleton, respectively. When Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observes complex structural targets such as oil tanks, it is easily interfered with by multipath signals, resulting in a large number of multipath ghost images in the SAR image, which seriously affect the image clarity. To address this problem, this paper proposes a multi-aspect multipath suppression method. This method observes complex structural targets from different azimuth angles to obtain a multi-aspect image sequence and then uses the difference in sequence features between the target image and the multipath ghost image with respect to aspect angle to separate them. This paper takes a floating-roof oil tank as an example to analyze the propagation path and the ghost image characteristics of multipath signals under different observation aspects. We conclude that the scattering center of the multipath ghost image changes with the radar observation aspect, whereas the scattering center of the target image does not. This paper uses the Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) method to decompose the image sequence matrix into two parts: a sparse matrix and a low-rank matrix. The low-rank matrix represents the aspect-stable principal component in the image sequence; that is, the real scattering center. The sparse matrix represents the part of the image sequence that deviates from the principal component; that is, the signal that varies with aspect, mainly including multipath signals, sidelobes, anisotropic signals, etc. By reconstructing the low-rank matrix and the sparse matrix, respectively, we can obtain the image after multipath signal suppression and also the multipath ghost image. Both the target and the multipath signal provide useful information. The image after multipath signal suppression is useful for obtaining the structural information of the target, and the multipath ghost image is useful for analyzing the multipath phenomenon of the complex structure target. This paper conducts experimental verification using real airborne SAR data of an external floating roof oil tank and compares three methods: RPCA, PCA, and sub-aperture fusion method. This paper proposes a method for efficient and accurate removal of grating lobes in automotive Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Grating lobes can indeed be mistaken as real targets, inducing in this way false alarms in the target detection procedure. Grating lobes are present whenever SAR focusing is performed using data acquired on a non-continuous basis. This kind of acquisition is typical in the automotive scenario, where regulations do not allow for a continuous operation of the radar. Radar pulses are thus transmitted and received in bursts, leading to a spectrum of the signal containing gaps. We start by deriving a suitable reference frame in which SAR images are focused. It will be shown that working in this coordinate system is particularly convenient since it allows for a signal spectrum that is space-invariant and with spectral gaps described by a simple one-dimensional function. After an inter-burst calibration step, we exploit these spectral characteristics of the signal by implementing a compressive sensing algorithm aimed at removing grating lobes. The proposed approach is validated using real data acquired by an eight-channel automotive radar operating in burst mode at 77 GHz. Due to the complex imaging mechanism of SAR images and the lack of multi-angle and multi-parameter real scene SAR target data, the generalization performance of existing deep-learning-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image target detection methods are extremely limited. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised domain-adaptive SAR ship detection method based on cross-domain feature interaction and data contribution balance. First, we designed a new cross-domain image generation module called CycleGAN-SCA to narrow the gap between the source domain and the target domain. Second, to alleviate the influence of complex backgrounds on ship detection, a new backbone using a self-attention mechanism to tap the potential of feature representation was designed. Furthermore, aiming at the problems of low resolution, few features and easy information loss of small ships, a new lightweight feature fusion and feature enhancement neck was designed. Finally, to balance the influence of different quality samples on the model, a simple and efficient E 1 2 I o U Loss was constructed. Experimental results based on a self-built large-scale optical-SAR cross-domain target detection dataset show that compared with existing cross-domain methods, our method achieved optimal performance, with the mAP reaching 68.54%. The advent of deep learning has significantly propelled the utilization of neural networks for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ship detection in recent years. However, there are two main obstacles in SAR detection. Challenge 1: The multiscale nature of SAR ships. Challenge 2: The influence of intricate near-shore environments and the interference of clutter noise in offshore areas, especially affecting small-ship detection. Existing neural network-based approaches attempt to tackle these challenges, yet they often fall short in effectively addressing small-ship detection across multiple scales and complex backgrounds simultaneously. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel network called SwinT-FRM-ShipNet. Our method introduces an integrated feature extractor, Swin-T-YOLOv5l, which combines Swin Transformer and YOLOv5l. The extractor is designed to highlight the differences between the complex background and the target by encoding both local and global information. Additionally, a feature pyramid IEFR-FPN, consisting of the Information Enhancement Module (IEM) and the Feature Refinement Module (FRM), is proposed to enrich the flow of spatial contextual information, fuse multiresolution features, and refine representations of small and multiscale ships. Furthermore, we introduce recursive gated convolutional prediction heads (GCPH) to explore the potential of high-order spatial interactions and add a larger-sized prediction head to focus on small ships. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our method compared to mainstream approaches on the SSDD and SAR-Ship-Dataset. Internal Solitary Waves (ISWs) play a pivotal role in transporting energy and matter within the ocean and also pose substantial risks to ocean engineering, navigation, and underwater communication systems. Consequently, measures need to be adopted to alleviate their negative effects and minimize linked risks. An effective method entails extracting ISW positions from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for precise trajectory prediction and efficient avoidance strategies. However, manual extraction of ISWs from SAR data is time-consuming and prone to inaccuracies. Hence, it is imperative to develop a high-precision, rapid, and automated ISW-extraction algorithm. In this paper, we introduce Middle Transformer U2-net (MTU2-net), an innovative model that integrates a distinctive loss function and Transformer to improve the accuracy of ISWs' extraction. The novel loss function enhances the model's capacity to extract bow waves, whereas the Transformer ensures coherence in ISW's patterns. By conducting experiments involving 762 image scenes, incorporating ISWs, from the South China Sea, we established a standardized dataset. The Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) achieved on this dataset was 71.57%, surpassing the performance of other compared methods. Ship detection is a significant issue in remote sensing based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). This paper combines the advantages of a steady constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector and a knowledge-oriented Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) classifier to achieve the location and the classification of ship candidates. The steady CFAR detector smooths the image by a moving-average filter and models the probability distribution of the smoothed clutter as a Gaussian distribution. The mean and the standard deviation of the Gaussian distribution are estimated according to the left half of the histogram to remove the effect of land, ships, and other targets. From the Gaussian distribution and a preset constant false alarm rate, a threshold is obtained to segment land, ships, and other targets from the clutter. Then, a series of morphological operations are introduced to eliminate land and extract ships and other targets, and an active contour algorithm is utilized to refine ships and other targets. Finally, ships are recognized from other targets by a knowledge-oriented GBDT classifier. Based on the brain-like ship-recognition process, we change the way of the decision-tree generation and achieve a higher classification performance than the original GBDT. On 20 May 2012, an Mw 5.8 earthquake, followed by an Mw 5.6 event nine days later, struck the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy, causing substantial damage and loss of life. Post-mainshock, several water-related phenomena were observed, such as changes in the groundwater levels in wells, the expulsion of sand–water mixtures, and widespread liquefaction evidence such as sand boils and water leaks from cracks. We analyzed the Earth's surface displacement during and after the Emilia 2012 seismic sequence using synthetic aperture radar images from the COSMO-SkyMed satellite constellation. This analysis revealed post-seismic ground subsidence between the Sant'Agostino and Mirabello villages. Specifically, the displacement time series showed a slight initial uplift followed by rapid subsidence over approximately four to five months. This widespread ground displacement pattern likely stemmed from the extensive liquefaction of saturated sandy layers at depth. This phenomenon typically induces immediate post-seismic subsidence. However, the observed asymptotic subsidence, reaching about 2.1 cm, suggested a time-dependent process related to post-liquefaction consolidation. To test this hypothesis, we analytically estimated the consolidation subsidence resulting from earthquake-induced excess pore pressure dissipation in the layered soil deposits. The simulated subsidence matched the observed data, further validating the significant role of excess pore pressure dissipation induced by earthquake loading in post-seismic ground subsidence. This study addresses the escalating challenges posed by forest drought and wildfires, emphasizing the critical need to monitor forest conditions to mitigate associated risks. While traditional optical sensors have proven valuable for vegetation surface water (VSW) assessment, their limitations in regions with persistent cloud cover prompt an exploration of the alternatives. The study advocates the efficacy of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems, known for their cloud-penetrating capabilities and sensitivity to changes in dielectric properties. Leveraging Sentinel-1 C-band dual polarization SAR data, the research investigates the impact of Vegetation Surface Water (VSW) on backscatter coefficients in a temperate coniferous forest through the application of generalized linear models. Despite the challenges posed by precipitation and canopy characteristics, the study unveils detectable modulation in backscatter, particularly in VH polarization, indicating the potential of SAR-based methods in forest monitoring. The occurrence of rain on the day of Sentinel-1 image acquisition, and therefore the presence of VSW, triggers an increase of 0.35 dB in VV backscatter, and an increase of 0.45 dB in VH backscatter. The findings underscore the importance of considering surface water content in radar backscatter analyses for accurate biomass estimations and change detection, suggesting avenues for future research and potential correction mechanisms. Given the large volume of remote sensing images collected daily, automatic object detection and segmentation have been a consistent need in Earth observation (EO). However, objects of interest vary in shape, size, appearance, and reflecting properties. This is not only reflected by the fact that these objects exhibit differences due to their geographical diversity but also by the fact that these objects appear differently in images collected from different sensors (optical and radar) and platforms (satellite, aerial, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)). Although there exists a plethora of object detection methods in the area of remote sensing, given the very fast development of prevalent deep learning methods, there is still a lack of recent updates for object detection methods. In this paper, we aim to provide an update that informs researchers about the recent development of object detection methods and their close sibling in the deep learning era, instance segmentation. The integration of these methods will cover approaches to data at different scales and modalities, such as optical, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, and digital surface models (DSM). Specific emphasis will be placed on approaches addressing data and label limitations in this deep learning era. This article presents a methodology for evaluating the susceptibility of landfill areas to develop landslides by analyzing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite products. The deformation velocity of the landfills is computed through the Persistent Scatterer Method on SAR imagery. These data, combined with a deformation model based on the shallow water equations (SWE), form the foundation for a Monte Carlo experiment that extrapolates the current state of the landfill into the future. The results of this simulation are then employed to determine the probability of a landslide occurrence. In order to validate the methodology effectiveness, a case study is conducted on a landfill in Zaldibar, Spain, revealing its effectiveness in estimating the probability of landfill landslides. This innovative approach emerges as an asset in large landfill management, acting as a proactive tool for identifying high-risk sites and preventing potential landslides, ultimately safeguarding human life and the environment. Dedicated to synchronously acquiring large-area, high-precision, and multi-scale ocean wind and wave information, a novel concept of a spaceborne ocean microwave dual-function integrated sensor is proposed in this paper. It integrates the functions of a scatterometer and SAR by sharing a single phased-array antenna. An overview of the scientific requirements and motivations for the sensor are outlined firstly. In order to fulfill the observation requirements of both the functions, the constraints on the system parameters such as frequency, antenna size, and incidence angle are analyzed. Then, the selection principles of these parameters are discussed within the limitations of antenna area, bandwidth, available time, and cost. Additionally, the constraints on the time sequence of transmitting and receiving pulses are derived to ensure that there is no conflict when the two functions operate simultaneously. Subsequently, a method for jointly designing the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of both the functions is introduced, along with zebra maps to verify its effectiveness. Playing a crucial role in ocean activities, internal solitary waves (ISWs) are of significant importance. Currently, the use of deep learning for detecting ISWs in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is gaining growing attention. However, these approaches often demand a considerable number of labeled images, which can be challenging to acquire in practice. In this study, we propose an innovative method employing a pyramidal conditional generative adversarial network (PCGAN). At each scale, it employs the framework of a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN), comprising a generator and a discriminator. The generator works to produce internal wave patterns as authentically as possible, while the discriminator is designed to differentiate between images generated by the generator and reference images. The architecture based on pyramids adeptly captures the encompassing as well as localized characteristics of internal waves. The incorporation of upsampling further bolsters the model's ability to recognize fine-scale internal wave stripes. These attributes endow the PCGAN with the capacity to learn from a limited amount of internal wave observation data. Experimental results affirm that the PCGAN, trained with just four internal wave images, can accurately detect internal wave stripes in the test set. In this study, a new method is proposed for semi-automated surface water detection using synthetic aperture radar data via a combination of radiometric thresholding and image segmentation based on the simple linear iterative clustering superpixel algorithm. Consistent intensity thresholds are selected by assessing the statistical distribution of backscatter values applied to the mean of each superpixel. Higher-order texture measures, such as variance, are used to improve accuracy by removing false positives via an additional thresholding process used to identify the boundaries of water bodies. Results applied to quad-polarized RADARSAT-2 data show that the threshold value for the variance texture measure can be approximated using a constant value for different scenes, and thus it can be used in a fully automated cleanup procedure. Compared to similar approaches, errors of omission and commission are improved with the proposed method. For example, we observed that a threshold-only approach consistently tends to underestimate the extent of water bodies compared to combined thresholding and segmentation, mainly due to the poor performance of the former at the edges of water bodies. The proposed method can be used for monitoring changes in surface water extent within wetlands or other areas, and while presented for use with radar data, it can also be used to detect surface water in optical images. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) raw data simulation has a significant role in the evaluation of newly-proposed methods for the estimation of moving target parameters. The evaluation of methods in different cases emphasizes the importance of the need to have fast simulators. Using reverse SAR imaging methods for the raw data simulations has achieved good results in the simulation of the static targets, but for the simulation of moving targets these methods have a few shortcomings. In this paper, we propose a method to simulate a speckled scene with moving targets in the hybrid domain. First, the scene is simulated, including speckle, which is statistically in accordance with real SAR image behavior. Then, a reverse imaging algorithm (inverse chirp scaling) was applied on the scene to generate the SAR raw data. The moving target simulation was also done in the time-domain as the next step. Finally, the results from two prior steps were superposed to generate the SAR raw data with moving targets. All steps of the proposed method were evaluated separately. The speckle procedure was evaluated by comparing the speckled SAR image before the simulation and the image of the SAR simulated raw data. The results show similar variations in real and imaginary parts of these data. The correlation between the reflectivity map and the SAR images after the simulation was calculated and the obtained correlation coefficient was about 0.95 for different images. The final data were further analyzed for the displacement of moving targets’ positions. Ground moving targets distort normally-focused synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Since most high-resolution SAR data providers only offer single-look complex (SLC) data rather than raw signals to general users, they need to apply a simple and efficient residual SAR focusing to SLC data containing moving targets. This paper presents an efficient and effective SAR residual focusing method that is practically applicable to SLC data. The residual Doppler spectrum of the moving target is derived from a general SAR configuration and normal SAR focusing. The processing steps are simple and straightforward, with a limited size of the processing window, e.g., 64 x 64. Application results using simulation data and actual TerraSAR-X SLC data with a speed-controlled vehicle demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, which particularly improves the -3 dB width, integrated sidelobe ratio, and symmetry of the reconstructed signals. In particular, the azimuthal symmetry becomes seriously distorted when the target speed is higher than 8 m/s (or 28.8 km/h), and the symmetry is well recovered by the proposed method. The importance of monitoring sea level in coastal zones becomes more and more obvious in the era of global climate change, because, in coastal zones, although satellite altimetry is an ideal tool in measuring sea level over open ocean, but its accuracy often decreases significantly at coast due to land contamination. Although the accuracy of waveform processing algorithms for synthetic aperture altimeters has been improved in the last decade, the computational speed is still not fast enough to meet the requirements of real-time processing, and the accuracy cannot meet the needs of nearshore areas within 1 km from the coast. To improve the efficiency and accuracy in the coastal zone, this study proposed an innovative waveform retracking scheme for the coastal zone based on a multiple optimization parabolic cylinder algorithm (MOPCA) integrated with machine learning algorithms such as recurrent neural network and Bayesian estimation. The algorithm was validated using 153-pass repeat cycle data from Sentinel-6 over Qianliyan Island and Hong Kong–Wanshan Archipelago. The computational speed of the proposed algorithm was four to five times faster than the current operational synthetic aperture radar (SAR) retracking algorithm, and its accuracy within 0–20 km from the island was comparable to the most popular SAMOSA+ algorithm, better than the official data product provided by Sentinel-6. Especially, the proposed algorithm demonstrates remarkable stability in the sense of proceeding speed. It maintains consistent performance, even when dealing with intricate wave patterns within a proximity of 1 km from the coast. In this paper, we propose a two-stage multi-task learning representation method for the classification of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) target images. The first stage of the proposed approach uses multi-features joint sparse representation learning, modeled as a l2,1-norm regularized multi-task sparse learning problem, to find an effective subset of training samples. Then, a new dictionary is constructed based on the training subset. The second stage of the method is to perform target images classification based on the new dictionary, utilizing multi-task collaborative representation. The proposed algorithm not only exploits the discrimination ability of multiple features but also greatly reduces the interference of atoms that are irrelevant to the test sample, thus effectively improving classification performance. Conducted with the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) public SAR database, experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective and superior to many state-of-the-art methods. Coasts are continually changing and remote sensing from satellites has the potential to both map and monitor coastal change at multiple scales. Unlike optical technology, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is uninfluenced by darkness, clouds, and rain, potentially offering a higher revision period to map shoreline position and change, but this can only be feasible if we have a better interpretation of what shorelines as extracted from SAR imagery represent on the ground. This study aims to assess the application of shorelines extracted from SAR from publicly available satellite imagery to map and capture intra-annual to inter-annual shoreline variability. This is assessed in three tidally controlled coastal study areas that represent sand and gravel beaches with different backshore environments: low-lying dunes and marsh; steep, rocky cliff; and urban environments. We have found that SAR shorelines consistently corresponded to positions above the high-water mark across all three sites. We further discuss the influence of the scene geometry, meteorological and oceanographic conditions, and backshore environment and provide a conceptual interpretation of SAR-derived shorelines. In a low-lying coastal setting, the annual change rate derived through SAR presents a high degree of alignment with the known reference values. The present study contributes to our understanding of the poorly known aspect of using shorelines derived from publicly available SAR satellite missions. It outlines a quantitative approach to automatically assess their quality with a new automatic detection method that is transferable to shoreline evolution assessments worldwide. The satellite-based techniques for the monitoring of extreme ice features (EIFs) in the Canadian Arctic were investigated and demonstrated using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical data sources. The main EIF types include large ice islands and ice-island fragments, multiyear hummock fields (MYHF) and other EIFs, such as fragments of MYHF and large, newly formed hummock fields. The main objectives for the paper included demonstration of various satellite capabilities over specific regions in the Canadian Arctic to assess their utility to detect and characterize EIFs. Stereo pairs of very-high-resolution (VHR) imagery provided detailed measurements of sea ice topography and were used as validation information for evaluation of the applied techniques. Single-pass interferometric SAR (InSAR) data were used to extract ice topography including hummocks and ice islands. Shape from shading and height from shadow techniques enable us to extract ice topography relying on a single image. A new method for identification of EIFs in sea ice based on the thermal infrared band of Landsat 8 was introduced. The performance of the methods for ice feature height estimation was evaluated by comparing with a stereo or InSAR digital elevation models (DEMs).
