The study aimed to prepare exercises using infrared radiation and identify its effect on the rehabilitation of women with osteoarthritis at the age of (40) women. The researchers assumed that there were statistically significant differences between the results of the rehabilitation tests for women with osteoarthritis (muscular strength, degree of pain, range of motion) pre and post. For the research group, the experimental method was adopted by designing the experimental group on a sample that was intentionally chosen by (100%) of the women suffering from this injury who are attended by the Al-Warith Center for Physiotherapy / affiliated with the Abbasid Shrine, who number (6) injured. The researchers prepared the rehabilitation exercises according to systematic steps that took a period of time to prepare and implement for the period extending from (5/1/2023) until (5/19/2023), with an application rate of (3) consecutive qualifying weeks, each week of which (3) units represented Rehabilitation sessions, bringing the total number of sessions to (9) rehabilitation units. The conclusions are that applying rehabilitative exercises using infrared rays helps rehabilitate women suffering from knee osteoarthritis by developing the strength of the muscles surrounding the joint and thus getting rid of the injury. It was determined that there were significant differences at the p<0.05 level of Muscular strength, Motor range and Degree of pain. The researchers recommend the need for centers to pay attention to Physiotherapy and should develop the expertise of the therapists working in it on how to apply rehabilitative exercises using infrared radiation in light of the findings of this study. Background Efficient infection control during carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales outbreaks demands rapid and simple techniques for outbreak investigations. WGS, the current gold standard for outbreak identification, is expensive, time-consuming and requires a high level of expertise. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (IR Biotyper) is a rapid typing method based on infrared radiation applied to samples, which provides a highly specific absorption spectrum. Objectives To investigate an outbreak of OXA-48-producing Escherichia coli in real-time using FTIR and subsequently compare the results with WGS. Methods Twenty-one isolates were collected during a nosocomial outbreak, and identification and antibiotic susceptibilities were confirmed by VITEK®2. FTIR was conducted for all isolates, and nine representative isolates were sequenced. Results FTIR was able to correctly determine the clonal relatedness of the isolates and to identify the outbreak cluster, as confirmed by WGS. By WGS, isolates in the main FTIR cluster belonged to the same MLST type and core-genome MLST type, and they harboured similar plasmids and resistance genes, whereas the singletons external to the FTIR cluster had different genetic content. Conclusions FTIR can operate as a rapid, efficient and reliable first-line tool for outbreak investigations during a real-time ongoing E. coli outbreak, which can contribute to limiting the spread of pathogens. Statement of the Problem: Early detection of caries and the extent of carious lesions for appropriate treatment planning are very important and lead to introduction of new diagnostic tools.Purpose: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of VistaCam IX Proxi and bitewing radiography for detection of posterior interproximal caries.Materials and Method: This in vitro study was performed on 40 extracted posterior teeth without cavitated carious lesions. Bitewing radiographs were obtained, infrared (IR) examination was performed, and the teeth were sectioned for histopathological analysis under a stereomicroscope as the gold standard for detection of caries and determination of the extent of carious lesions. Data were analyzed with Cohen’s kappa statistic, and Wilcoxon rank sum test.Results: The specificity of VistaCam IX Proxi and bitewing radiography was 71.4% and 87.7%, respectively. Their sensitivity was 100% and 40% for enamel caries, 72.8% and 54.5% for external half dentin caries, and 82.3% and 58.8% for internal half dentin caries, respectively (p= 0.048).Conclusion: Bitewing radiography had a higher specificity and lower rate of false positive results. However, VistaCam IX Proxi had higher sensitivity for caries detection with lower rate of false negative results. Considering the higher sensitivity and significantly lower frequency of false negative results by VistaCam IX Proxi, it may be reliably used for caries detection specially enamel caries, and can serve as an adjunct to bitewing radiography.

Abstract Background Labor pain is complex, paradoxical and varied in every parturient woman. Management of labor pain has been a crucial component in maternity care. Heat therapy is one of the proposed method for labor pain relief. Infrared is one of the methods of heat therapy but there is any study in this regard. This study aimed to compare the effect of the infrared belt and hot water bag on the severity of pain in the first stage of labor among primiparous women. Methods In this clinical trial in the first stage of labor, 20-min cycles of heat therapy were conducted at the dilations of 4–5 and 6–7 cm in the intervention group 1 by an infrared belt and in the intervention group 2 by hot water bag, respectively. The control group received routine care. The severity of the pain was measured by the short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire. Results In total, 136 women consented to participate in this clinical trial study. (1) Background: although digital infrared thermographic imaging (DITI) is used for diverse medical conditions of the upper limbs, no reference standards have been established. This study aims to establish reference standards by analyzing DITI results of the upper limbs. (2) Methods: we recruited 905 healthy Korean adults and conducted thermography on six regions (dorsal arm, ventral arm, lateral arm, medial arm, dorsal hand, and ventral hand region). We analyzed the data based on the proximity of regions of interest (ROIs), sex, and age. (3) Results: the average temperature (°C) and temperature discrepancy between the right and the left sides (ΔT) of each ROI varied significantly (p < 0.001), ranging from 28.45 ± 5.71 to 29.74 ± 5.14 and from 0.01 ± 0.49 to 0.15 ± 0.62, respectively. The temperature decreased towards the distal ROIs compared to proximal ROIs. The average temperatures of the same ROIs were significantly higher for men than women in all regions (p < 0.001). Across all regions, except the dorsal hand region, average temperatures tended to increase with age, particularly in individuals in their 30s and older (p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: these data could be used as DITI reference standards to identify skin temperature abnormalities of the upper limbs. Digital infrared thermographic imaging (DITI) is a supplementary diagnostic technique to visualize the surface temperature of the human body. However, there is currently no reference standard for the lower limbs for accurate diagnosis. In this study, we performed DITI on the lower limbs of 905 healthy Korean volunteers (411 males and 494 females aged between 20 and 69 years) to obtain reference standard data. Thermography was conducted on the front, back, lateral sides, and sole area, and 188 regions of interest (ROIs) were analyzed. Additionally, subgroup analysis was conducted according to the proximity of ROIs, sex, and age groups. The mean temperatures of ROIs ranged from 24.60 ± 5.06 to 28.75 ± 5.76 °C and the absolute value of the temperature difference between both sides reached up to 1.06 ± 2.75 °C. According to subgroup analysis, the sole area had a significantly lower temperature than any other areas, men had higher temperatures than women, and the elderly had higher temperatures than the young adults except for the 20s age group (p < 0.001, respectively). This result could be used as a foundation for the establishment of a reference standard for DITI. Introduction: Infrared thermography has the potential to help assess human head and neck muscles, as thermal variation measurements due to muscle imbalance can contribute to the evaluation and therapeutic follow‐up of various clinical conditions in the field of health. Objective: This study investigated, with a scoping review, the use of infrared thermography in complementary assessments of human head and neck muscles to determine the extent of research on the topic, what methodologies are used in thermal assessment and thermographic analysis, what regions are assessed, and what results are expected in thermography. Methods: LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO, and Web of Science were the databases searched to identify articles published on the topic, with no restriction of language or time of publication. Descriptive, analytical, and experimental observational studies on the assessment of the human head and neck muscle surface temperature with infrared thermography were included. Case studies, case series, methodological accuracy, literature review, animal studies, studies that assessed patients with head and neck cancer, and studies that did not assess head and neck muscle temperature with thermography were excluded. The articles were analysed with a protocol developed by the authors, with data on author, year, country, type of study, sample characterisation, muscles assessed, outcomes investigated, thermal assessment methodology, thermographic analysis methodology and thermography measurements. Results: This review identified and analysed 27 articles. The studies assessed thermal distribution in normal individuals and those with pathologies related to hyper‐ and hypofunctional head and neck muscle conditions for diagnosis or therapeutic follow‐up. The masseter, temporal, digastric, anterior cervical region, orbicularis oris, frontalis, buccinator, suprahyoid, trapezius, sternocleidomastoid and levator scapulae muscles were assessed. Quantitative analyses with area selection tool predominated, considering absolute temperatures and temperature differences. The studies investigated temperature and its relationship with myogenic pain, quantitative assessment of muscle parameters and blood flow velocity. The mean temperature ranged from 32.97°C (±2.21) to 34.90°C, and hyper‐radiant and/or asymmetric regions were observed in hyperfunctional conditions and normal subjects after muscle activation. Conclusion: Thermography is used in complementary assessments of head and neck muscles, identifying hyper‐radiant regions and thermal asymmetry related to muscle tension and activation state. The soybean (Glycine max) is used as one of the main protein sources in various animal fodders. However, the presence of anti-nutrients significantly reduces the nutritional value of the bean. To solve this problem, the present work is devoted to the inactivation of the anti-nutrients in soybeans by the use of micronisation as a means of thermal treatment. The purpose of the work is to improve the process of soybean micronisation by determining the impact of the process parameters on the soybean's quality and energy performance, namely - the urease activity and specific energy consumption. A multifactor experiment was carried out using an experimental device for the heat treatment of the beans. The influence of the temperature and time of the heat treatment on the level of inactivation of anti-nutrients and the specific energy consumption for beans with different sizes were established. The modes of heat treatment which allow the inactivation of the anti-nutrients in the soybeans to admissible standard values were also defined. The obtained and studied functional dependencies of the quality and energy indices on the technological factors of the soybean micronisation allow one to improve this process and technical means for its implementation in reducing the anti-nutrient content.

However, there is a lack of authoritative data to define a “fever” when an NCIT is used and previous studies have shown that NCIT readings fluctuate widely depending on ambient temperatures and the body surface site screened. The aim of this study was to establish cut-off points for normal temperatures of different body sites (neck, forehead, temples, and wrist) and investigate the accuracy of NCITs at various ambient temperatures to improve the standardization and accuracy of fever screening.Patients and Methods: A prospective investigation was conducted among 904 participants in the outpatient and emergency departments of Chengdu Women’s and Children’s Central Hospital. Body temperature was measured using NCITs and mercury axillary thermometers. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the accuracy of body temperature detection at the four body surface sites. Data on participant characteristics were also collected.Results: Among the four surface sites, the neck temperature detection group had the highest accuracy. When the neck temperature was 37.35°C as the optimum fever diagnostic threshold, the sensitivity was 0.866. The optimum fever diagnostic thresholds for forehead, temporal, and wrist temperature were 36.65°C, 36.65°C, and 36.75°C, respectively. Moreover, triple neck temperature detection had the highest sensitivity, up to 0.998, whereas the sensitivity of triple wrist temperature detections was 0.949. Notably, the accuracy of NCITs significantly reduced when the temperature was lower than 18°C.Conclusion: Neck temperature had the highest accuracy among the four NCIT temperature measurement sites, with an optimum fever diagnostic threshold of 37.35°C. We evaluated the clinical reliability and utility of temperature measurements using no-contact forehead infrared thermometers (NCFITs) by comparing their temperature measurements with those obtained using infrared tympanic thermometers (IRTTs) in children. In this observational, prospective, and cross-sectional study, we enrolled 255 children (aged 1 month to 18 years) from the pediatric surgery ward at a tertiary medical center in Korea. The mean age of the children was 9.05 ± 5.39 years, and 54.9% were boys. The incidence rate of fever, defined as an IRTT reading of ≥38.0 °C, was 15.7%. The ICC coefficient for the assessment of agreement between temperatures recorded by the NCFIT and IRTT was 0.87, and the κ-coefficient was 0.83. The bias and 95% limits of agreement were 0.15 °C (−0.43 to 0.73). For an accurate diagnosis of fever (≥38 °C), the false-negative rate was much lower, but the false-positive rate was higher, especially in 6-year-old children. Therefore, NCFITs can be used to screen children for fever. However, a secondary check is required using another thermometer when the child's temperature is >38 °C. NCFITs are proposed for screening but not for measuring the temperature. For the latter, an accurate and reliable thermometer shall be used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate carbon nanotubes‐hydroxyapatite nanocomposites as bioactive titanium implant coats and to assess the effect of near‐infrared radiation on these nanocomposites. Carbon nanotubes were acid‐functionalized, and hydroxyapatite was prepared by the wet‐chemical precipitation method. Both precursors were used to prepare the carbon nanotubes‐hydroxyapatite nanocomposites in two concentrations of hydroxyapatite (0.5 and 1 wt.%). The formed nanocomposites were characterized and used to coat silanized titanium discs and cylinders. Half the specimens of each group were radiated by near‐infrared laser, then wettability and shear bond strength were tested for all specimens. Bioactivity was tested by monitoring the formation of calcium phosphate compounds after soaking in simulated body fluid. A significant increase in wettability and bond strength was found in the radiated coats compared to the non‐radiated ones with the 1% hydroxyapatite group showing the highest values followed by 0.5% hydroxyapatite then the carbon nanotubes group. The two‐way ANOVA test showed that both the difference in material and the laser treatment have had a statistically significant contribution to the increase in wettability and bond strength. The radiated groups also contributed to the formation of more calcium phosphate crystals of larger sizes and higher degrees of crystallinity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Overcoming tumor apoptosis resistance is a major challenge in enhancing cancer therapy. Pyroptosis, a lytic form of programmed cell death (PCD) involving inflammasomes, Gasdermin family proteins, and cysteine proteases, offers potential in cancer treatment. While photodynamic therapy (PDT) can induce pyroptosis by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) through the activation of photosensitizers (PSs), many PSs lack specific subcellular targets and are limited to the first near-infrared window, potentially reducing treatment effectiveness. Therefore, developing effective, deep-penetrating, organelle-targeted pyroptosis-mediated phototherapy is essential for cancer treatment strategies. Here, we synthesized four molecules with varying benzene ring numbers in thiopyrylium structures to preliminarily explore their photodynamic properties. The near-infrared-II (NIR-II) PS Z1, with a higher benzene ring count, exhibited superior ROS generation and mitochondria-targeting abilities, and a large Stokes shift. Through nano-precipitation method, Z1 nanoparticles (NPs) also demonstrated high ROS generation (especially type-I ROS) upon 808 nm laser irradiation, leading to efficient mitochondria dysfunction and combined pyroptosis and apoptosis. Moreover, they exhibited exceptional tumor-targeting ability via NIR-II fluorescence imaging (NIR-II FI) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI). Furthermore, Z1 NPs-mediated phototherapy effectively inhibited tumor growth with minimal adverse effects. The poor 5-year survival rate for bladder cancers is associated with the lack of efficient diagnostic and treatment techniques. Despite cystoscopy-assisted photomedicine and external radiation being promising modalities to supplement or replace surgery, they remain invasive or fail to provide real-time navigation. Here, we report non-invasive fractionated photodynamic therapy of bladder cancer with full-course real-time near-infrared-II imaging based on engineered X-ray-activated nanotransducers that contain lanthanide-doped nanoscintillators with concurrent emissions in visible and the second near-infrared regions and conjugated photosensitizers. Following intravesical instillation in mice with carcinogen-induced autochthonous bladder tumours, tumour-homing peptide-labelled nanotransducers realize enhanced tumour regression, robust recurrence inhibition, improved survival rates, and restored immune homeostasis under X-ray irradiation with accompanied near-infrared-II imaging. On-demand fractionated photodynamic therapy with customized doses is further achieved based on quantifiable near-infrared-II imaging signal-to-background ratios. Near-infrared (NIR) aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) are excellent probes for tumor imaging, but there still is space to improve their imaging specificity and sensitivity. In this work, a strategy of tandem targeting and dual aggregation of an AIEgen is proposed to achieve these two purposes. An AIEgen, β-tBu-Ala-Cys(StBu)-Lys(Biotin)-Pra(QMT)-CBT ( Ala-Biotin-QMT ), is designed to tandem target the biotin receptor and leucine aminopeptidase of a cancer cell and thereafter undergo CBT-Cys click reaction-mediated dual aggregations in the cell. Experimental results show that Ala-Biotin-QMT renders 4.8-fold and 7.9-fold higher NIR fluorescence signals over those in the "biotin + LAP inhibitor"-treated control groups in living HepG2 cells and HepG2 tumor-bearing mice, respectively. We anticipate that Ala-Biotin-QMT , which has the tandem targeting and dual aggregation property to simultaneously achieve enhanced tumor enrichment and fluorescence onset, could be applied for accurate cancer diagnosis in the clinic in the future.

The treatment of irregular-shaped and critical-sized bone defects poses a clinical challenge. Deployable, self-fitting tissue scaffolds that can be implanted by minimally invasive procedures are a promising solution. Toward this, we fabricated NIR-responsive and programmable polylactide-co-trimethylene carbonate (PLMC) scaffolds nanoengineered with polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA) by extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing. The 3D-printed scaffolds demonstrated excellent (>99%), fast (under 30 s), and tunable shape recovery under NIR irradiation. PLMC-PDA composites demonstrated significantly higher osteogenic potential in vitro as revealed by the significantly enhanced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) secretion and mineral deposition in contrast to neat PLMC. Intraoperative deployability and in vivo bone regeneration ability of PLMC-PDA composites were demonstrated, using self-fitting scaffolds in critical-sized cranial bone defects in rabbits. The 3D-printed scaffolds were deformed into compact shapes that could self-fit into the defect shape intraoperatively under low power intensity (0.76 W cm -2 ) NIR. At 6 and 12 weeks postsurgical implantation, near-complete bone regeneration was observed in PLMC-PDA composites, unlike neat PLMC through microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. The potential clinical utility of the 3D-printed composites to secure complex defects was confirmed through self-fitting of the scaffolds into irregular defects in ex vivo models of rabbit tibia, mandible, and tooth models. Taken together, the composite scaffolds fabricated here offer an innovative strategy for minimally invasive deployment to fit irregular and complex tissue defects for bone tissue regeneration.

Among external stimuli-responsive therapy approaches, those using near infrared (NIR) light irradiation have attracted significant attention to treat bone-related diseases and bone tissue regeneration. Therefore, the development of metallic biomaterials sensitive to NIR stimuli is an important area of research in orthopaedics. In this study, we have generated in situ prism-shaped silver nanoparticles (p-AgNPs) in a biomorphic nano-holed TiO 2 coating on a Ti6Al4V alloy (a-Ti6Al4V). Insertion of p-AgNPs does not disturb the periodically arranged sub-wavelength-sized unit cell on the a-Ti6Al4V dielectric structure, while they exacerbate its peculiar optical response, which results in a higher NIR reflectivity and high efficiency of NIR photothermal energy conversion suitable to bacterial annihilation. Together, these results open a promising path toward strategic bone therapeutic procedures, providing novel insights into precision medicine.

This study examined the thermal signature of pigmented lesions observed by digital infrared thermal imaging as a possible adjunct to physician diagnosis. Thermal images of pigmented lesions were compared to clinical examination by a plastic surgeon interested in skin diseases, dermatoscopy, and histopathology. A total of 35 patients with 55 pigmented skin lesions were considered. We found that all lesions emitting a dark signal on thermal imaging, compared to the nearby skin, were benign, while only one of all benign lesions (1.9%) had a bright "warm" signal. Benign lesions with papule/nodular morphology were dark in 87.5% of patients. All lesions diagnosed as malignant melanoma, both dermatoscopically and histologically, had plaque morphology; yet, only half demonstrated some signals on thermal imaging. Based on these results, we concluded that thermal imaging could be used as an adjunct to diagnosis when examining skin lesions. This study provided an introduction to using thermal imaging for spotting skin lesions.

Developing NIR-IIb luminescence probes with rapid visualization and a high penetration depth is essential for diabetes research. Combining a sensitizing switch with lanthanide-doped nanoparticles (LnNPs) has been employed to fabricate the NIR-IIb probes. However, these probes mainly adopt heptamethine cyanine dye as the antenna, and the NIR-IIb signal is activated by inhibiting the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) of the dye. Due to limited recognition units, this strategy makes many biomolecules undetectable, such as cysteine (Cys), which is closely related to diabetes. Herein, in this article, hemicyanine dye, NFL-OH, was verified as a new antenna to sensitize NIR-IIb emission from LnNPs. Unlike traditional cyanine dyes, hemicyanine's fluorescence intensity can also be modulated by intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), thereby expanding the range of detectable targets for NIR-IIb probes based on sensitization mechanism. Through switching the hemicyanine-sensitized NIR-IIb emission, we successfully fabricated an NFL-Cys-LnNPs' nanoprobe, which can effectively monitor Cys concentration in the liver of diabetic mice during diabetes progression and evaluate the efficacy of diabetic drugs. Our work not only presents an excellent tool for Cys imaging but also introduces new concepts for designing NIR-IIb probes.

Absolute quantity imaging of biomolecules on a single cell level is critical for measurement assurance in biosciences and bioindustries. While infrared (IR) transmission microscopy is a powerful label-free imaging modality capable of chemical quantification, its applicability to hydrated biological samples remains challenging due to the strong IR absorption by water. Traditional IR imaging of hydrated cells relies on powerful light sources, such as synchrotrons, to mitigate the light absorption by water. However, we overcome this challenge by applying a solvent absorption compensation (SAC) technique to a home-built benchtop IR microscope based on an external-cavity quantum cascade laser. SAC-IR microscopy adjusts the incident light using a pair of polarizers to precompensate the IR absorption by water while retaining the full dynamic range. Integrating the IR absorbance over a cell yields the total mass of biomolecules per cell. We monitor the total mass of the biomolecules of live fibroblast cells over 12 h, demonstrating promise for advancing our understanding of the biomolecular processes occurring in live cells on the single-cell level.

Structure engineering is of great importance to enhance the carrier separation efficiency of multiphoton absorption (MPA) materials for near-infrared (NIR) light-driven reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In this study, the MPA-responsive potassium/cyano group-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride was investigated, demonstrating charge redistribution and improved carrier separation efficiency by density functional theory calculations and experimental results. With various types of boosted ROS generation under UV-vis or NIR-II light irradiation, the potassium/cyano group-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride could achieve efficient multiphoton photodynamic therapy after reducing the particle size. This study developed a simple strategy to manipulate charge distribution for booting NIR light-activated ROS generation in efficient multiphoton photodynamic therapy.

We design a multi-effective nanoplatform (CeO 2 :Nd@SiO 2 @CeO 2 :Yb,Er@SiO 2 -RB/MB/CD36) with down/upconversion dual-mode emissions and targeting ability in foam macrophages. Under NIR excitation, this nanoplatform can realize in vivo NIR-II imaging and PDT/PTT coordinated therapy for early AS simultaneously.

The structural composition of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) can be modified and controlled by appropriate reduction methods to modulate its electronic structure, rendering it a versatile platform for tailoring optoelectronic and catalytic properties. Nevertheless, it is uncommon to concurrently amplify the photocatalytic and photothermal effects when regulating and utilizing pure rGO. Here, we investigate the impact of structural variations in thermally reduced graphene oxide (TGO) on its photocatalytic and photothermal properties. Various characterization results demonstrate that appropriate thermal reduction facilitates the preservation and transformation of oxygenated groups and structure defects, which in turn encourages the formation of reactive carbon radicals and discrete graphitic domains, thereby strengthening the activation of molecular oxygen and the plasmonic photothermal effect under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Moreover, the optimized TGOs exhibit efficient sterilization with NIR irradiation due to enhanced photocatalytic activities and photothermal effects. This work highlights the potential for developing photocatalytic and photothermal rGO-based materials through structural engineering.

Subcutaneous (SC) administration of chemotherapeutics combined with near-infrared (NIR) light activation can effectively target skin tumors by triggering localized drug release and enhancing cytotoxic effects. In this study, we developed NIR-responsive indocyanine green (ICG) and the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (Dox) loaded into gelatin nanoparticles (NPs) for SC delivery in a skin tumor-bearing mouse model. Histological examination (hematoxylin and eosin staining) confirmed the successful delivery and swelling behavior of the Dox/ICG-loaded gelatin NPs at the SC site. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that NIR activation of the Dox/ICG-loaded gelatin NPs generated significant photothermal heat (48 and 46 °C), leading to targeted drug release and a substantial reduction in skin tumor size (from 15 to 3 mm 3 ). Our findings suggest that this dual-modality approach of SC chemotherapeutic administration and NIR-triggered photothermal therapy can concentrate cytotoxic drugs at the tumor site, offering a promising strategy for improving skin cancer treatment.

The evolution of targeted cancer theranostics has revolutionized personalized medicine by integrating diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) has emerged as a key theranostic target in the context of prostate cancer, paving the way for the clinical approval of multiple drugs. However, the persistent challenge of off-target toxicity, which plagues both conventional and advanced treatment modalities such as targeted chemotherapy and radiotherapy, thus demands further innovation. Considering this critical issue, this review discusses the recent advances in the binary treatment techniques, i.e., phototherapies, that have the potential to circumvent the key concern of off-target toxicity associated with personalized chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Precisely, an up-to-date overview of the latest developments in the near-infrared (NIR)-based phototheranostic strategies for prostate cancer by targeting PSMA has been presented. Furthermore, we have discussed the associated particulars that require specific attention in enhancing the translational potential of phototheranostic techniques.

Hydrogels derived from fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-conjugated amino acids and peptides demonstrate remarkable potential in biomedical applications, including drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and tissue engineering. These hydrogels can be injectable, offering a minimally invasive approach to hydrogel implantation. Given their potential for prolonged application, there is a need for non-destructive evaluation of their properties over extended periods. Thus, we introduce a hydrogel characterization platform employing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes. Our approach involves generating supramolecular self-assembling hydrogels from aromatic Fmoc-amino acids. Integrating SWCNTs into the hydrogels maintains their structural and mechanical properties, establishing SWCNTs as optical probes for hydrogels. We demonstrate that the SWCNT NIR-fluorescence changes during the gelation process correlate to rheological changes within the hydrogels. Additionally, single particle tracking of SWCNTs incorporated in the hydrogels provides insights into differences in hydrogel morphologies. Furthermore, the disassembly process of the hydrogels can be monitored through the SWCNT fluorescence modulation. The unique attribute of SWCNTs as non-photobleaching fluorescent sensors, emitting at the biologically transparent window, offers a non-destructive method for studying hydrogel dynamics over extended periods. NIR-IIa fluorescence imaging (FI) and NIR-II photothermal therapy (PTT) have gained popularity due to the advantages of high temporal and spatial resolution and deep penetration. However, the hyperthermia (>48 °C) of conventional PTT with nonspecific warming and thermal diffusion may inevitably cause damage to healthy tissues or organs surrounding the tumor. Therefore, it is highly desirable to provide effective cancer treatment by implementing mild photothermal therapy (mPTT) at mild temperatures with lower laser power density. Here, the nanotheranostic platform FN@P-GA NPs with NIR-II absorption and NIR-IIa emission was developed by constructing J-aggregates. FN@P-GA possesses good biocompatibility, favorable NIR-IIa FI performance, decent stability, and high photothermal conversion efficiency (57.6 %), which lays a solid foundation for FI-guided mPTT. Infrared thermal imaging (IRT) remotely and contactless maps the temperature on the examined surface, recording the distribution of infrared radiation emitted by each body whose temperature is higher than absolute zero. The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of thermography in the assessment of asymptomatic infection foci in patients with high systemic infection. The 150 cases diagnosed based on roentgenograms, divided into 6 groups of diagnosed odontogenic lesions, along with a control group. Thermal imaging was performed with a FLIR Systems T1020 thermal camera. Thermal image analysis was performed using ThermaCAM Researcher Pro 2.10, MS Office Excel 2022 and Statistica 10. The periapical areas of selected dead teeth were selected as areas of interest. The Mann Whitney's U test showed statistically significant (p < 0.001) differences in average temperature between each patient's and healthy group. Depper's analysis showed statistical significance also between the ZM and BZ groups (p = 0.004). Moreover, obtained results may also suggest that thermal imaging can be useful in identify odontogenic infection foci. The thermal asymmetry of periapical tissues of teeth differentiates dead from living teeth, as well as individual pathologies related to the process of gangrenous pulp decay. Background: Five-guaranteed elderly individuals are a special group of the elderly Chinese population faced with unique challenges; these individuals lack any financial resources (including support by relatives), and are solely reliant on the government to provide food, clothing, medical care, and housing as well as burials. In this article, we aim to investigate mood problems (depression, anxiety) and cognitive functioning in Five-guaranteed elderly individuals, and to validate the effectiveness of two promising interventions, graphene far-infrared intervention (GFII; an exploratory and noninvasive technique) and social network intervention (SNI), for elderly people to lay the foundation for future social service work., Methods: To address the emotional and cognitive difficulties experienced by this special group, we designed this study, which is the first to apply GFII in this population. We also administered SNI given the social isolation of these individuals, in addition to a corresponding control group. 108 elderly individuals in 3 elder care facilities were screened to evaluate eligibility to participate in the current study, including 44 from Facility A (allocated to the GFII group), 43 from Facility B (allocated to the SNI group), and 21 from Facility C (allocated to the control group). GFII lasts for four weeks, with professionally trained carers putting on and removing intervention caps for half an hour each day. SNI lasts for three weeks, three times a week, and consists of a total of nine themed activities. The length of an activity is 90 min. We also did pre- and post-test comparisons of depression, anxiety and cognition in each group of older adults., Results: The results showed that GFII led to immediate improvements in anxiety and cognitive impairment in the five-guaranteed elderly individuals, and the improvement in cognitive function was sustained over time. Moreover, SNI group showed significant improvements in cognitive function after the intervention period., Conclusions: The GFII is a promising intervention that can be applied to intervene in cognitive and mood disorders in older adults. Biomedical-device-associated infection (BAI) is undoubtedly a major concern and a serious challenge in modern medicine. Therefore, the development of biomedical materials that are capable of resisting or killing bacteria is of great importance. In this work, a croconaine-functionalized polymer with antifouling and near-infrared (NIR) photothermal bactericidal properties was prepared and facilely modified on polypropylene (PP) to combat medical device infections. Croconaine dye is elaborately modified as a "living" initiator, termed CR-4EBiB, for preparing amphiphilic block polymers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the formed polymer coating, the hydrophobic block can strongly adhere to the surface of the PP substrate, whereas the hydrophilic block is located on the outer layer by solvent-induced resistance to bacterial adhesion. Under the irradiation of an NIR laser (808 nm), the croconaine dye in the coating achieved maximum conversion of light to heat to effectively kill E. coli , S. aureus , and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This work provides a facile and promising strategy for the development of implantable antibacterial biomedical materials.

Bradyarrhythmia poses a serious threat to human health, with chronic progression causing heart failure and acute onset leading to sudden death. In this study, we develop a scalable drug-mimicking nanoplasmonic therapeutic strategy by introducing gold nanorod (Au NR) mediated near-infrared (NIR) photothermal effects. An integrated sensing and regulation platform is established for in situ synchronized NIR laser regulation and electrophysiological property recording. The Au NR plasmonic regulation enables the restoration of normal cardiomyocyte rhythm from the bradyarrhythmia. By regulating the aspect ratio and concentration of Au NRs, as well as the intensity and time of NIR irradiation, we precisely optimized the plasmonic photothermal effect to explore effective therapeutic strategies. Furthermore, mRNA sequencing revealed a significant increase in the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in the electrophysiological activities of cardiomyocytes following photothermal therapy. Au NR-mediated plasmonic photothermal therapy, as an efficient and noninvasive approach to bradyarrhythmia, holds profound implications for cardiology research.

The use of artificial enzymes and light energy in photocatalytic therapy, a developing drug-free therapeutic approach, can treat malignant tumors in vivo . However, the relatively deficient oxygen concentration in the tumor microenvironment (TME) restrains their further tumor treatment capability. Herein, a novel nanoplatform with Cu 7 S 4 @Au nanocatalyst coated by MnO 2 was successfully designed. After 1064 nm light irradiation, the designed nanocatalyst can promote the separation of light generated electron-hole pairs, resulting in ROS generation and tumor cell apoptosis. The MnO 2 shelled nanoplatform can function as a TME-responsive oxygen self-supplied producer to improve photocatalyst treatment and GSH depletion. In summary, the designed novel nanoplatform shows efficient inhibition of tumor growth via GSH depletion and synergistic photocatalytic therapy, which is of great significance for improving the clinical tumor treatment effect.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has recently come to the forefront as an exceptionally powerful and promising method for the treatment of cancer. Existing photosensitizers are predominantly engineered to target diverse biomolecules, including proteins, DNA, lipids, and carbohydrates, and have proven to greatly enhance the efficacy or specificity of PDT. However, it is noteworthy that there exists a conspicuous scarcity of photosensitizers specifically designed to target RNAs. Recognizing the crucial and multifaceted roles played by RNAs in various cellular processes and disease states, we have ventured into the development of a novel RNA-targeting photosensitizer, named Se-718 , designed specifically for PDT-based cancer therapy. Se-718 has been engineered to exhibit a high molar absorption coefficient in the NIR region, which is crucial for effective PDT. More importantly, Se-718 has demonstrated a distinct RNA-targeting capability, as evidenced through rigorous testing in both circular dichroism and fluorescence experiments. Furthermore, Se-718 has been shown to display both type I and type II photodynamic properties. This unique characteristic enables the efficient killing of cancer cells under a wide range of oxygen conditions, both normoxic (21% O 2 ) and hypoxic (2% O 2 ). The IC 50 of Se-718 can be as low as 100 nM, and its light-to-dark toxicity ratio is an impressive 215 times higher, outperforming most photosensitizers currently available. Moreover, in vivo studies conducted with tumor-bearing mice have demonstrated the excellent antitumor effects and high safety profile of Se-718 . Considering the outstanding PDT efficacy of Se-718 , we are optimistic that the development of RNA-targeting photosensitizers may provide an innovative and highly effective option for cancer therapeutics in the near future.

Gliomas remain challenging brain tumors to treat due to their infiltrative nature. Accurately identifying tumor boundaries during surgery is crucial for successful resection. This study introduces an innovative intraoperative visualization method utilizing surgical fluorescence microscopy to precisely locate tumor cell dissemination. Here, the focus is on the development of a novel contrasting agent (IR-Glint) for intraoperative visualization of human glial tumors comprising infrared-labeled Glint aptamers. The specificity of IR-Glint is assessed using flow cytometry and microscopy on primary cell cultures. In vivo effectiveness is studied on mouse and rabbit models, employing orthotopic xenotransplantation of human brain gliomas with various imaging techniques, including PET/CT, in vivo fluorescence visualization, confocal laser scanning, and surgical microscopy. The experiments validate the potential of IR-Glint for the intraoperative visualization of gliomas using infrared imaging. IR-Glint penetrates the blood-brain barrier and can be used for both intravenous and surface applications, allowing clear visualization of the tumor. The surface application directly to the brain reduces the dosage required and mitigates potential toxic effects on the patient. The research shows the potential of infrared dye-labeled aptamers for accurately visualizing glial tumors during brain surgery. This novel aptamer-assisted fluorescence-guided surgery (AptaFGS) may pave the way for future advancements in the field of neurosurgery.

In situ vaccines that can stimulate tumor immune response have emerged as a breakthrough in antitumor therapy. However, the immunosuppressed tumor microenvironment and insufficient infiltration of immune cells lead to ineffective antitumor immunity. Hence, a biomimetic carrier-free nanosystem (BCC) to induce synergistic phototherapy/chemotherapy-driven in situ vaccines was designed. A carrier-free nanosystem was developed using phototherapeutic reagents CyI and celastrol as raw materials. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that under NIR light irradiation, BCC-mediated photo/chemotherapy not only accelerates the release of drugs to deeper parts of tumors, achieving timing and light-controlled drug delivery to result in cell apoptosis, but also effectively stimulates the antitumor response to induce in situ vaccine, which could invoke long-lasting antitumor immunity to inhibit tumor metastasis and eliminate distant tumor. This therapeutic strategy holds promise for priming robust innate and adaptive immune responses, arresting cancer progression, and inducing tumor dormancy.

Similar to clinically applied thermal ablation techniques, the cellular necrosis that occurs during photothermal tumor therapy (PTT) can induce inflammatory response, severely compromising the therapeutic efficacy and clinical translation of the PTT. Inspired by the remarkable ROS-scavenging activity and high photothermal efficiency of molybdenum-based polyoxometalate (POM) and the immunostimulatory effect of cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs), a NIR-responsive and injectable DNA-mediated hybrid hydrogel (CDN-POM) has been developed. The hydrogels have superior photothermal efficiency (43.41%) to POM, impressive anti-inflammatory capability and prolonged intratumoral CDN-releasing behavior, thus enabling synergistic anti-tumor therapeutic outcomes. Meanwhile, local treatment induced by CDN-POM hydrogels displays minimal side effects on normal tissue. Taking advantage of the high phototherapeutic effect, ROS-scavenging activity and sustained CDN release of CDN-POM hydrogels, a novel combined approach that integrates photothermal therapy and immunotherapy of breast tumor is successfully pioneered.

In response to the pressing need for more efficient and targeted cancer therapies, this study presents the development of biodegradable hydroxyapatite/polyaniline (HAp/PANI) nanocomposite drug carriers for near-infrared (NIR)-induced drug delivery. The synthesis involved loading polyaniline onto mesoporous hydroxyapatite spheres, resulting in high drug loading capacity and tunable NIR responsiveness. The HAp/PANI spheres exhibited superior photothermal properties compared to pristine HAp under NIR irradiation, along with excellent biocompatibility. Importantly, the drug release behavior could be precisely controlled by adjusting NIR power and irradiation time, leading to enhanced anticancer efficacy against HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells. These findings highlight the potential of HAp/PANI mesoporous spheres as promising drug carriers for NIR-responsive cancer therapy.

The ground-breaking combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted much attention in medical fields as an effective method for fighting cancer. However, evidence suggests that the therapy efficiency is still limited by shallow light penetration depth and poor photosensitizer loading capacity. Herein, we constructed an upconversion nanoparticle@Zr-based metal-organic framework@indocyanine green molecule (UCNPs@ZrMOF@ICG) nanocomposite to integrate 1532 nm light-triggered PDT and 808 nm light-mediated PTT. NaLnF 4 nanoparticles are designed to emit upconversion luminescence (UCL) under 1532 nm laser excitation, which is consistent with the absorption spectra of the ZrMOF. Benefiting from the excellent energy transfer efficiency, the ZrMOF can absorb visible light from the UCNPs and then catalyze O 2 into 1 O 2 for deep tissue PDT. To achieve combination therapy, the clinically approved ICG nanocomposite was introduced as a photothermal agent for PTT under 808 nm laser irradiation, and the photothermal conversion efficiency was calculated to be ∼28%. The designed nanosystems facilitate efficient deep-tissue tumor treatment by integrating PDT with PTT. Ultimately, this study creates a multifunctional nanocomposite by combining 1532 nm light-triggered deep tissue PDT and near-infrared (NIR) light-driven PTT for personalized cancer therapy.

We designed two series of NIR-II PTAs with D-A or D-A-D structures, in which the introduction of thiophene promotes a bathochromic shift of emission into the NIR-II region, helps to improve the cellular uptake of the PTAs and facilitates NIR-II imaging-guided PDT/PTT cancer phototherapy.

Nanomedicine has emerged as a promising avenue for advancing cancer treatment, but the challenge of mitigating its in vivo side effects necessitates the development of innovative structures and materials. Recent investigation has unveiled nanogels as particularly compelling candidates, characterized by a porous, three-dimensional network architecture that exhibits exceptional drug loading capacity. Beyond this, nanogels boast a substantial specific surface area and can be tailored with specific chemical functionalities. Consequently, nanogels are frequently engineered as a multi-modal synergistic platform for combating cancer, wherein photothermal therapy stands out due to its capacity to penetrate deep tissues and achieve localized tumor eradication through the application of elevated temperatures. In this review, we delve into the synthesis of diverse varieties of photothermal nanogels capable of controlled drug release triggered by either chemical or physical stimuli. It also summarizes their potential for synergistic integration with photothermal therapy alongside other therapeutic modalities to realize effective tumor ablation. Moreover, we analyze the primary mechanisms underlying the contribution of photothermal nanogels to cancer treatment while underscoring their adeptness in regulating therapeutic temperatures for repairing bone defects resulting from tumor-associated trauma. Envisioned as an auspicious strategy in the realm of cancer therapy, photothermal nanogels hold promise for furnishing controlled drug delivery and precise thermal ablation capabilities.

The dental implant market has experienced explosive growth, owing to the widespread acceptance of implants as the core of oral rehabilitation. Clinically, achieving simultaneous anti-infective effects and rapid osseointegration is a crucial but challenging task for implants. The demand for implants with long-term broad-spectrum antibacterial and immune-osteogenic properties is growing. Existing methods are limited by a lack of safety, efficiency, short-lasting anti-infective ability, and inadequate consideration of the immunomodulatory effects on osteogenesis. Herein, a ZnO/black TiO 2- x heterojunction surface structure was designed as a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive nanofilm immobilized on a titanium (Ti) implant surface. This nanofilm introduces abundant oxygen vacancies and heterojunctions, which enhance the photothermal and photoelectric abilities of Ti implants under NIR illumination by narrowing the band gap and improving interfacial charge transfer. The "photo-thermo-electric" implant exhibits excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy against three dental pathogenic bacteria ( Porphyromonas gingivalis , Fusobacterium nucleatum , and Staphylococcus aureus , >99.4%) by destroying the bacterial membrane and increasing the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the implant can effectively eliminate mature multispecies biofilms and kill bacteria inside the biofilms under NIR irradiation. Meanwhile, this implant can also induce the pro-regenerative transformation of macrophages and promote osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. Moreover, in vivo results confirmed the superior antibacterial and osteoimmunomodulatory properties of this dental implant. RNA sequencing revealed that the underlying osteogenic mechanisms involve activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and bone development. Overall, this versatile "photo-thermo-electric" platform endows implants with anti-infection and bone integration performance simultaneously, which holds great potential for dental implants.

Near-infrared II (NIR-II) imaging and photothermal therapy hold tremendous potential in precision diagnosis and treatment within biological organisms. However, a significant challenge is the shortage of NIR-II fluorescent probes with both high photothermal conversion coefficient (PCE) and fluorescence quantum yield (Φ F ). Herein, we address this issue by integrating a large conjugated electron-withdrawing core, multiple rotors, and multiple alkyl chains into a molecule to successfully generate a NIR-II agent 4THTPB with excellent PCE (87.6%) and high Φ F (3.2%). 4THTPB shows a maximum emission peak at 1058 nm, and the emission tail could extend to as long as 1700 nm. These characteristics make its nanoparticles (NPs) perform well in NIR-II high-resolution angiography, thereby allowing for precise diagnosis of thrombus through NIR-II imaging and enabling efficient photothermal thrombolysis. This work not only furnishes a NIR-II agent with excellent overall performance but also provides valuable guidance for the design of high-performance NIR-II agents.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has the potential to cure pancreatic cancer with minimal side effects. Visible wavelengths are primarily used to activate hydrophobic photosensitizers, but in clinical practice, these wavelengths do not sufficiently penetrate deeper localized tumor cells. In this work, NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ ,Fe 2+ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were coated with polymer and labeled with meta -tetra(hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (mTHPC; temoporfin) to enable near-infrared light (NIR)-triggered PDT of pancreatic cancer. The coating consisted of alendronate-terminated poly[ N , N -dimethylacrylamide- co -2-aminoethylacrylamide]- graft -poly(ethylene glycol) [P(DMA-AEM)-PEG-Ale] to ensure the chemical and colloidal stability of the particles in aqueous physiological fluids, thereby also improving the therapeutic efficacy. The designed particles were well tolerated by the human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell lines CAPAN-2, PANC-1, and PA-TU-8902. After intratumoral injection of mTHPC-conjugated polymer-coated UCNPs and subsequent exposure to 980 nm NIR light, excellent PDT efficacy was achieved in tumor-bearing mice.

Though platinum (Pt)-based complexes have been recently exploited as immunogenic cell death (ICD) inducers for activating immunotherapy, the effective activation of sufficient immune responses with minimal side effects in deep-seated tumors remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we propose the first example of a near-infrared (NIR) light-activated and lysosomal targeted Pt(II) metallacycle (1) as a supramolecular ICD inducer. 1 synergistically potentiates immunomodulatory response in deep-seated tumors via multiple-regulated approaches, involving NIR light excitation, boosted reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, good selectivity between normal and tumor cells, and enhanced tumor penetration/retention capabilities. Specifically, 1 has excellent depth-activated ROS production (~7 mm), accompanied by strong anti-diffusion and anti-ROS quenching ability. In vitro experiments demonstrate that 1 exhibits significant cellular uptake and ROS generation in tumor cells as well as respective multicellular tumor spheroids. Based on these advantages, 1 induces a more efficient ICD in an ultralow dose (i.e., 5 μM) compared with the clinical ICD inducer-oxaliplatin (300 μM). In vivo, vaccination experiments further demonstrate that 1 serves as a potent ICD inducer through eliciting CD8 + /CD4 + T cell response and Foxp3 + T cell depletion with negligible adverse effects. Phototherapy has demonstrated substantial development because in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window it has a larger tissue penetration and fewer adverse consequences. In this work, a particular kind of NIR-II responsive Fe-doped carbon nanoparticles (FDCNs) is synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method for combined photothermal and chemodynamic therapy. The mesoporous nanostructure of FDCN, which has a size distribution that exceeds 225 nm, allows for effective acidification. The iron ions released from these nanoparticles can catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into hydroxyl radical (•OH) for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). In addition to their CDT utility, FDCN can effectively adsorb and transform 1064 nm light into local heat, achieving a photothermal conversion efficacy (PCE) of 36.3%. This dual functionality not only allows for the direct eradication of cancer cells through photothermal therapy (PTT) but also enhances the chemodynamic reaction, creating a synergistic effect that amplifies the therapeutic outcome. The FDCN has demonstrated remarkable anticancer activity in both cellular and animal tests without incurring major systemic toxicity. This suggests that the compound has great promise for use in clinical cancer therapy.

Activatable photosensitizers (PSs) generating 1 O 2 only under specific conditions can minimize concomitant injury to normal tissues. Heavy-atom-free PSs hold the merits of low dark toxicity, long triplet-state lifetimes, good photostability, and relatively low cost. PSs with emission in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window are highly valuable for deep-tissue, high-contrast imaging. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a series of heavy-atom-free PSs by a one-step reaction between an easily accessible rhodamine derivative and commercially available thiophene aldehydes. One of the as-prepared PSs, 2b-3T , exhibits emission maxima at 810 nm and tails to the NIR-II region at 1140 nm, together with large Stokes shift (178 nm). Importantly, the newly developed PSs, featuring functional carboxylic acid groups, present promising opportunities as versatile platforms for creating activatable PSs. To validate our concept, we developed Cu 2+ /pH-activatable PSs using the spirocyclization mechanism of rhodamine. Ultimately, we showcased the effectiveness of these innovative PSs in photodynamic therapy through in vitro experiments.

This study investigated the effects of far-infrared (FIR) irradiation on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) uptake by human hepatocellular carcinoma G2 (HepG2) cells via the regulation of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). FIR irradiation for 30 min significantly decreased PCSK9 expression (p < 0.01) in HepG2 cells. FIR irradiation substantially increased the low-density lipoprotein receptor (p < 0.0001) and LDL-C uptake (p < 0.01). Activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) channels mimicked the effects of FIR irradiation, significantly decreasing the protein expression of PCSK9 (p < 0.05). Conversely, inhibition of TRP channels using ruthenium red reversed the reduction in PCSK9 protein expression following FIR irradiation (p < 0.01). The specific activation of TRPV4 using 4α-PDD mimicked the effect of FIR irradiation (p < 0.01), whereas PCSK9 reduction by FIR irradiation was significantly reversed by the inhibition of TRPV4 using RN1734 (p < 0.05). These findings implied that FIR irradiation emitted from a ceramic lamp specifically increased TRPV4 activity. DNA phase separation participates in chromatin packing for the modulation of gene transcription, but the induction of DNA phase separation in living cells for disease treatment faces huge challenges. Herein, we construct a Ru(II)-polypyridyl-loaded upconversion nanoplatform (denoted as UCSNs-R) to achieve the manipulation of DNA phase separation and production of abundant singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) for efficient treatment of gliomas. The utilization of the UCSN not only facilitates high loading of Ru(II)-polypyridyl complexes (RuC) but also promotes the conversion of near-infrared (NIR) laser to ultraviolet light for efficient 1 O 2 generation. The released RuC exhibit DNA "light-switch" behavior and high DNA binding affinity that induce phase separation of DNA in living cells, thus resulting in DNA damage and suppressing tumor-cell growth. In vivo investigation demonstrates the high capability of UCSNs-R in inhibiting tumor proliferation under NIR laser illumination. This work represents a paradigm for designing a DNA phase separation nanoinducer through integration of the UCSN with Ru(II)-polypyridyl-based complexes for efficient therapy of gliomas.

Infrared thermography may be an alternative technology for measuring the amount of CH 4 produced and has the advantages of low cost, speed and efficiency in obtaining results. The study's objective was to determine if the infrared thermography is adequate for predicting the emission of CH 4 in hair sheep and the best time after feeding to carry out the measurement. Twelve Santa Inês lambs (females, non-pregnant, with twelve months old and mean body weight of 39.3 ± 2.1 kg) remained for two days in respirometric chambers, in a semi-closed system, to determine the CH 4 production. The animals were divided into two treatments, according to the diet provided. During this period, seven thermographic photographs were taken, at times - 1 h, -0.5 h, 0 h, 0.5 h, 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 5 h, and 7 h, according to the feeding time, defined as 0 h. CH 4 production was measured over 24 h. Thermographic images measured the maximum, minimum, average and point temperatures at the left and right flanks. The temperature difference between the left and right flanks (left minus right) was calculated each time. Pearson correlation coefficients, multiple regression and principal component analysis were carried out in SAS ® . The best prediction of emission intensity of CH 4 (kg of CH 4 per dry matter intake) was obtained at 3 h after feeding: CH 4 /DMI = 13.9016-0,38673 * DifP 2  + 3.39089 * DifMed 2 (R² = 0.48), using the difference between left and right flanks for point and average temperature measures.
