High population, energy consumption, industrialization, and environmental degradation are inherently linked, making the study of ecological footprints in the most populous countries crucial for understanding their environmental impact and guiding efforts to minimize ecological degradation through sustainable resource management and conservation. Therefore, this study examines the effects of disaggregated energy consumption, industrialization, and total population on the ecological footprint of the world's top 10 most populous countries namely Bangladesh, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, and the USA, using data for the period of 1990-2020. The research employs Kao and Pedroni techniques of cointegration to determine whether the variables are cointegrated in the long run. The long-term equilibrium association is measured utilizing panel autoregressive distributed lag/pooled mean group (ARDL/PMG), and method of moment quantile (MMQ) regression methods. Furthermore, to test for the causal relationships between the selected variables, we used the Dumitrescu and Hurlin (D-H) panel causality method. The findings of the study reveal that renewable energy consumption, as well as GDP square, have a significant negative influence on ecological footprint, implying that renewable energy and GDP square reduce ecological footprint and thus enhance environmental quality. Furthermore, non-renewable energy, industrialization, total population, and GDP have a detrimental impact on environmental quality by increasing ecological footprint. It is also found that there is a one-way causality from non-renewable energy and industrialization to ecological footprint and a bidirectional causal relationship between ecological footprint and total population, GDP, and GDP 2 . Although economies have experienced immense growth in recent times, however, it also comes with environmental and social consequences which question the current practices and threaten the well-being of current as well as the future generation. This realization, thus, pushes institutions to bring change in existing energy-related policies in order to incorporate social and environmental concerns. Clean energy transition, in this regard, is gaining attraction all over the world as it shifts away economies from non-renewable resources. The study, thereby, intends to explore the role of governance and environmental taxes in the energy transition in China economy over the period 1999-2019. The roles of industrialization and economic growth in the transition of energy are taken into consideration. The recently introduced legit quantile autoregressive distributed lag (QARDL) model and Granger causality in quantiles are applied to quarterly data spanning 1999Q1 to 2019Q4 for empirical quantile analysis. Results echoed that governance has a positive impact and environmental resources have a negative impact on energy transition across all quantiles. However, economic growth influences clean energy transition only at extremely higher quantiles (0.60-0.95), and industrialization does not have any effect on energy transition over the entire quantile range. The findings of the Granger causality analysis reveal the presence of a bidirectional causal association between clean energy transition and all the variables. Developing nations aim to industrialize and grow sustainably often ignoring the environmental consequences. However, few empirical studies have looked at the influence of industrialization-driven economic transition on carbon footprint in developing nations using a non-parametric approach. In this milieu, on the ground of Kaya's identity and the novel multivariate quantile-on-quantile regression (QQR) (extension of Sim and Zhou's (2015) bivariate QQR model), the present research studies the impact of industrial value-added (IGVA), population, energy intensity, and carbon intensity on CO 2 emissions in India. This study is one of the first in the literature to evaluate the industrialization-carbonization nexus in the context of Kaya's identity for the Indian economy utilizing an innovative multivariate QQR approach, which makes a methodological and empirical addition to the literature. The outcomes of the multivariate QQR technique demonstrate that economic and environmental development requires continual long-run strategies. The empirical findings revealed that there is no authentication that India's carbon emissions increased due to its industrialization, which exhibited that IGVA has a negative and significant connection with CO 2 emissions. In some quantiles, population size positively impacts CO 2 emissions. On the other hand, carbonization in the Indian economy is asymmetrically affected by GDP per capita and energy and carbon intensity. This study examines how renewable and non-renewable energy generation interacts with both to affect the ecological footprint in China during 1990-2019 by using FMOLS, DOLS, and CCR estimation techniques and ARDL simulation models to assess the impact of industrialization and urbanization on environmental sustainability based on the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis model framework. Firstly, the findings verify the applicability and validity of the EKC hypothesis in China. Secondly, renewable energy generation, industrialization, and urbanization facilitate the reduction of ecological footprint and the improvement of environmental quality in the long run, while non-renewable energy generation increases the ecological footprint and leads to the intensification of ecological pollution. However, the short-term estimates give evidence that industrialization, urbanization, and renewable and non-renewable energy generation can all increase the ecological footprint, which is not conducive to ecological sustainability. This study examined the nexus between energy consumption and environmental quality in light of China's 2060 carbon-neutrality agenda utilizing annual frequency data from 1971 to 2018. In order to obtain valid and reliable outcomes, more robust econometric techniques were employed for the analysis. From the results, all the variables were first differenced stationary and cointegrated in the long-run. The elastic effects of the predictors on the explained variable were explored through the ARDL, FMOLS, and the DOLS techniques, and from the discoveries, energy utilization worsened environmental quality in the country via more CO 2 emissions. Also, industrialization and urbanization deteriorated the country's environmental quality; however, technological innovations improved ecological quality in the nation. On the causal connections between the variables, a unidirectional causality from energy consumption to CO 2 effluents was discovered. Also, feedback causalities between industrialization and CO 2 secretions, and between urbanization and CO 2 exudates were disclosed. However, there was no causality between technological innovations and CO 2 emanations. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that, since energy consumption pollutes the environment, the country should transition to the utilization of renewable energies. Also, the government should allocate more resources to the renewable energy sector. This will help increase the portion of clean energy in the country's total energy mix. Furthermore, research and development that are linked to the utilization of green energies should be supported by the government. Data constraints were the main limitation of this exploration. This article explored the dynamic nexus among economic growth, industrialization, medical technology, and healthcare expenditure in West Africa while using urbanization and aged population as control variables. West African countries were sub-sectioned into low-income (LI) and lower-middle-income (LMI) countries. Panel data extracted from the World Development Indicators (WDI) from 2000 to 2019 were used for the study. More modern econometric techniques that are vigorous to cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity were employed in the analytical process in order to provide accurate and trustworthy results. The homogeneity test and cross-sectional dependency test confirmed the studied panels to be heterogeneous and cross-sectionally dependent, respectively. Moreover, the CADF and CIPS unit root tests showed that the variables were not integrated in the same order. This, thus, leads to the employment of the PMG-ARDL estimation approach, which unveiled economic growth and urbanization as trivial determinants of healthcare expenditure in the LI and LMI panels. However, the results affirmed industrialization as a major determinant of healthcare expenditure in the LI and LMI panels. Additionally, medical technology was confirmed to decrease healthcare expenditure in the LMI panel, whereas in the LI panel, an insignificant impact was witnessed. Also, the aged population was found to intensify healthcare expenditure in both the LI and LMI panels. Lastly, on the causal connection between the series, the outcome revealed a mixture of causal paths among the variables in all the panels. From the last few decades, the issue of sustainability of the growth process has become the prime objective for most economies. The quality of the environment contributes significantly to achieving the objective of sustainability of the growth process. Therefore, in recent years, the policy of world economies increases its emphasis on growth, prosperity, and opportunities for all with a clean environment. Keeping in this mind, in the present paper, we examined the impact of income, technological innovation, income inequality, and industrialization on the environment quality in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) during the period 1996-2016. The results display cross-sectional dependency within the panel of BRICS nations. Westerlund's cointegration test verifies a long-run relationship between the concerned variables. The dynamic ordinary least square method (DOLS) exhibits that technological innovation has negative while industrialization has a positive impact on the degradation of environmental quality. The results support the existence of the environment Kuznets curve (EKC) to per capita gross domestic product (GDP). Additionally, the paper evaluates the causal link between the variables by using the Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test, and the outcomes support the existence of feedback hypothesis between environmental quality and GDP per capita, and between environmental quality and income inequality. In a context of climate change and global warming, the literature paid more and more attention to the determinants of energy consumption. This article aims at examining the influences of the financial development and the institutional quality on the energy consumption in a global sample of 112 countries between 2002 and 2014. Our analysis is based on dynamic two-step system GMM estimations for three different energy consumption indicators-our findings are interesting. First, the financial development induces a higher energy consumption per capita; a higher energy consumption per output, and a lower renewable energy consumption. Second, the institutions have an insignificant positive influence on the energy use per capita and the energy use per output. Third, and this is our major contribution, the institutional quality can actually reverse the effect of the financial development. In other words, the effect of financial development on the energy use per capita is positive in weak institutional environment but it is negative when the latter is well developed. This paper investigates whether the impact of income on CO 2 emissions is invariant to endogenously estimated threshold levels for the economic structure (ES) represented by value added in manufacturing, industry, and service sector shares in GDP for a panel of 54 economies over the 1971-2017 period. Our panel smooth transition regression estimation results strongly suggest that the sensitivity of CO 2 emissions to income is substantially much higher in countries with higher manufacturing and industry sector shares, whilst it is much lower in servicified economies. Given the argument that manufacturing is the engine of growth, this finding may not necessarily downgrade the crucial importance of an industrial policy which places the manufacturing at the core. In recent years, industrial growth has enabled the BRICS nations to increase their export earnings from both traditional and new products. However, in terms of modernization of industries, these nations can be considered as laggards, because the present production processes appear to be carbon-intensive and energy-inefficient. In this backdrop, the present study, by using the second-generation econometric procedures, is intended to examine the impact of industrialization, export diversification, technological innovation, income inequality, and resource rents on the carbon dioxide emissions in the BRICS nations from 1990 to 2018. The long-run coefficients revealed that the industrial expansion, reduction in export diversification, low concentration on traditional exports, and high concentration on new exports exacerbated the air quality in the BRICS nations. On the other hand, technological advancement contributed to restoring environmental quality during the study period. Furthermore, it is observed that the present research endeavors in the BRICS nations are insufficient in circumventing industrial pollution, as the value of the joint coefficient of technological advancement and industrialization is found insignificant but negative. An undergraduate course in development economics presents an ideal opportunity to introduce students to the importance of gender differences in economic outcomes. The authors of this article argue that a systematic integration of gender into development economics courses based on standard textbooks is feasible and desirable. They provide a gendered narrative of how to engender a development economics course in the Global North using as examples topics that are commonly taught and show how gender-aware scholarly articles, classroom activities, and assignments can complement a course based on a standard textbook or set of articles. They engender three main sections of a prototype development economics course: meanings and measures of economic development; strategies for economic development; and salient issues in development; and they add a forward-looking section on creating equitable development.

This paper examines three interrelated factors outside of formal provision of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in sub-Saharan Africa that have undermined TVET systems. The first is the process, pace, and levels of industrialisation, which has had a direct effect on TVET provision: low numbers of well-paying jobs requiring technical expertise. This has an indirect effect, which is the second crucial factor: lack of economic development and change in labour markets. There are very few jobs that would be considered 'middle class' or 'mid-level' in wealthy countries. Most people are in survivalist work. An international consensus since the 2000s on palliative approaches to development which address the effects but not the causes of the lack of economic development in Africa has resulted in mass poor quality provision of education--the third factor. Education systems are rapidly expanding and achievement levels rising, in the context of very little possibility of labour market rewards for most people, and substantial labour market rewards confined mainly to graduates. This reinforces deeply embedded cultural preferences for general education, which originate in the type of education systems established by colonial powers, as well as the relationships between educational credentials and elite jobs.

• The consensus that manufacturing was the strategic road for development has recently been challenged. • We constructed an original and extensive database on the world manufacturing production, that provides information about value added and employment for 200 countries, of which 160 developing countries, for the 1970–2018 period. • The study does not reveal evidence of a recent decline of manufacturing in developing countries, including or not China. Rather we document a continuous expansion of manufacturing employment in the developing world, that accounts now for 82 % of the world employment, while the share of the developing economies in the world output has doubled over the period. • Since 2010, we observe and we quantify a new pattern. Manufacturing employment does not increase any more in China, while it has continued to grow at the same pace in the rest of the developing world. • Our findings show that manufacturing has continued to play a key role in economic development. Thus, low-income countries should not give up industrialization strategies and should learn from the recent experiences of rapid industrialization and growth. The "rise of the Rest" and almost all successes in economic development have relied on late industrialization. Most Latin American countries entered the ranks of middle-income levels almost simultaneously with Japan and South Korea. However, while Japan and South Korea embarked on the path of economic development through technological innovation and industrial upgrading, Latin America fell into the middle-income trap. By examining the history of industrial and technological development in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, three representative countries in Latin America, this paper finds that the fundamental reasons for Latin America falling into the middle-income trap lie in the tension between the choice of industrialization path and primitive accumulation, as well as the institutional deficiencies in technology and industrial development. Latin America, which has fallen into the middle-income trap, finds it hard to upgrade its technology and is trapped in premature industrialization and the middle-technology trap. It can be said that Latin America has fallen into a double trap, which reinforces each other and forms a solid trap pattern. The warning from the Latin American experience is that late-developing countries need to maintain an open attitude during the process of technological catching up, build a complete technological innovation system, enhance industrial and technological governance capabilities, and seize the window of opportunity for technological and industrial upgrading. Industrialization is a key element for economic growth in both developed and undeveloped countries. Due to globalization, the cause-effect between industrialization, economic growth and urbanization are changing. This study investigates the relationship between economic expansion, urbanization, and industrialization in Kenya using a quantitative methodology. Using World Bank economic indicator parameters, it focuses on understanding the complex interrelationships between these factors. Vector Autoregression (VAR) modeling is used to analyze the relationships between GDP, urbanization, and industrialization between 1990 and 2018. The Granger causality test is used to determine the causal linkages between GDP, urbanization, and industrialization. Results show that urbanization is increasing steadily across Kenya, with a high population in central, western, Rift valley, and coastal regions. The availability of agricultural land influences urbanization, with a significant positive relationship between the three parameters. The Granger causality test shows a unidirectional relationship between GDP, urbanization, and industrialization. A minimum of 20% is considered as the benchmark for urbanization to reduce both GDP and industrialization. Unplanned and rapid urbanization, accompanied by ecologically unfavorable industrialization schemes, threatens Kenya's biodiversity. The study provides insight into the interconnection between the three pillars of the economy and the statistical models developed are useful in forecasting future trends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent contributions to the literature on industrialization and development have confirmed that manufacturing continues to play a key role as a driver of economic development. As a corollary, these contributions highlight the importance of premature industrialization as a barrier to economic development and as one of the main sources of the middle-income trap. In this paper, we analyze the factors that may have hindered industrial development in the past four decades. In particular, we focus on the role of (non-Foreign Direct Investment) net capital inflows as a potential source of premature deindustrialization. We consider a sample of 36 developed and developing countries from 1980 to 2017, with major emphasis on the case of emerging and developing economies (EDEs) in the context of increasing financial integration. We show that periods of abundant capital inflows may have caused a significant contraction of manufacturing share to employment and GDP, as well as the decrease of the economic complexity index. We also show that the phenomena of "perverse" structural changes are significantly more relevant in EDE countries than in advanced ones and that they may similarly occur across EDE countries, regardless of structural differences in the way manufacturing contributed to their development. Based on such evidence, we conclude with some policy suggestions highlighting capital controls and external macroprudential measures taming international capital mobility as useful policy tools for promoting long-run productive development on top of strengthening (short-term) financial and macroeconomic stability. Vocational education and training (VET) has been emphasised as an important topic in Turkey's industrial development. However, Turkey's VET system has often been criticised for its weak performance in meeting employers' skill requirements and attracting successful students, which has resulted in the low status of VET in society. This article examines the Turkish VET system's on-going challenges through the evaluation of different groups of stakeholders. Drawing on the Capability Approach, it seeks to understand stakeholders' role in improving individuals' capabilities in a state-led VET context. Focusing on the automotive industry, the researcher conducted 26 semi-structured interviews with the representatives of four groups: firms, industrial actors (industry chambers, employer associations, and trade unions), state agencies, and vocational teachers. The findings show that all stakeholders engaging with Turkey's state-driven VET system agree on the strategic importance of the system for Turkey's economic and social development. In this paper, the STIRPAT model was developed to study the role of financial development in urban low-carbon economic transformation. The statistical analysis used data from 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2009 to 2019. The results show that: (1) there is a positive U-shaped nonlinear relationship between financial development and urban low-carbon economic transformation. (2) Financial development not only directly affects the transformation of the low-carbon economy, but also indirectly affects it through three transmission channels: environmental regulation, industrial structure, and urbanization. (3) The financial development itself and the level of urbanization have a threshold effect on the transformation of the low-carbon economy. Under the threshold effect of environmental regulation and industrial structure, the role of financial development in the transformation of low-carbon economies presents a process of 'first decrease and then increase'. Therefore, improving the intensity of environmental regulation, implementing differentiated financial and industrial development policies, and controlling the urbanization process are effective measures to promote the transformation of low-carbon economies. With the promotion of the rural revitalization strategy, cultural and creative industries of tourism have gradually become an important driving force for rural revitalization. Since the economic level of minority areas is low and the concept of industrial development lags behind, developing the cultural and creative industries of tourism has a positive role in cultural revitalization and economic structure transformation. In recent years, Ebian Yi Autonomous County (Ebian County) has relied on rich intangible cultural heritage resources and achieved fruitful results in the development of cultural and creative products of rural tourism, adding vitality to its rural tourism and rural revitalization. Starting from the economy and the development of cultural and creative industries empowered by intangible cultural heritage (ICH), this study analyzed the impact of related cultural and creative products of Ebian County on its economic development in the five-year period from 2018 to 2022 by means of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Three main conclusions could be drawn. (1) The impact of intangible cultural heritage cultural and creative industries of Ebian County on the economy has been positive and expanding gradually with time. (2) The number of inheritors and workshops, and the business income of workshops are the three major factors affecting the development of cultural and creative industries. (3) Ebian already has a good foundation of cultural and creative industries of intangible cultural heritage, so the investment of funds and training of talents have played a major role in promoting the development of cultural and creative industries of intangible cultural heritage. This article explores the intricacies of replicating China's structural economic transformation through special economic zones (SEZs) in Africa, with a focus on the Eastern Industry Zone (EIZ) in Ethiopia. Combining insights from empirical research and the literature on China's development model, African SEZs and Chinese economic and trade cooperation zones (ETCZs) in Africa, we contend that while static industrialisation policies can be transposed more readily, the dynamic aspects that underpin China's model face challenges due to differences in institutional capacity and contextual synergies (internal and external). This hampers the efficacy of ETCZs in steering structural economic transformation. The article advocates for a more creative adaptation process, urging dynamic learning and leadership level innovation to address institutional and structural weaknesses while reducing vulnerability to externalities. A growing body of literature addresses the implications of the ongoing rapid state-led, exportoriented industrialisation in African cities for a range of development concerns -- e.g. labour relations, value chain development, gender relations and China's involvement in infrastructural development. This study focuses on another important implication of Africa's rapid industrialisation that has not been sufficiently explored -- urban--industrial integration. Recent scholarship that looks at the interaction of urban and industrial development in Africa identifies challenges emerging at the nexus caused by lack of policy integration (PI). However, this literature does not address why this disconnect between the policy spheres arises or why it continues to persist. Based on thematic analysis of over a hundred qualitative interviews with key policy actors in the urban--industrial sphere, I argue policy fragmentation in the African urban--industrial nexus is driven by processes of 'authoritarian centralisation' that foster adverse political conditions for PI -- more specifically conceptual integration, policy coordination and infrastructural integration. The study illustrates the relationship between authoritarian centralisation and PI and discusses the ways in which authoritarianism has shaped urban policy, planning and development and its integration into industrial and economic development strategies. This article examines the state of structural transformation, industrialisation, and development in Africa against the backdrop of decades of pursuing sustainable growth and development on the continent. To meet this objective, the author analysed the share of the manufacturing sector to the total economic output, the technological density of the manufactured exports, and other relevant statistics as measures of this process. The secondary sources deployed to meet the article's objective include relevant journal articles and books. This paper maintains that while regional integration was correctly identified as a vehicle for the continent's economic emancipation, there has been a shortfall in translating that overwhelming consensus into action. The failure to implement this critical agenda explains the continent's current poor state of industrialisation and development. This paper contends that this objective will not be realised until the African states are restructured to be deliberate and intentional about the continent's industrialisation by adopting a developmental approach to regional integration. The article examines prospects for policy to enhance contemporary economic development. Shortcomings of mainstream economic analyses are evident since the Cold War, with failure to establish policy doctrines engaging with developing countries' structural transformation: on average, not industrialisation, but servicization: capital and labour moving from agriculture to services. Faster-growing countries show greater servicization, yet overtly services-focused strategies are rare, and policy doctrine and economic analysis focuses on industrialisation. Literature searches show that servicization is largely ignored, reducing possibilities for policy-supported growth. Demonstrating this, the article argues that "internal" aspects of mainstream data and theory create severe confirmation bias, explaining this failure. This article investigates the establishment of Technological Industrial Development Zones (TIDZ) in North Macedonia. These zones are aimed at attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and represent an innovative strategy to promote business relations that were previously unavailable in North Macedonia. If their output is sold to international markets, companies operating within the TIDZ benefit from incentives and subsidies. In addition to the legally announced incentives available to investors within the TIDZ, the government offers extra incentives on a case-by-case basis, in agreements with significant overseas partners. Since the introduction of this approach, the government has made a public display of its benefits. The consequences of the implemented strategy for FDI attraction deserves an effort for its analysis by all available means. Using the available data and sources from relevant documents, the focus in the paper will be put on the impact of the creation of such zones on the FDI inflow. North Macedonia is an attractive investment destination for international investors because of the fiscal, economic, and financial benefits provided by the actual law, as well as the excellent business climate, as measured by the ‘Doing Business’ indicator. The impact of digital industrialization on regional pollution control and carbon reduction in China is an area that remains largely unexplored despite being a new driving force in promoting high-quality economic development. This study constructs a combined system synergy model to measure the synergistic governance effect of regional pollution and carbon reduction in China from 2011 to 2020 and then estimates the direct impact and spatial spillover effect using a spatial dual-weight model. Our findings indicate that digital industrialization has a greater impact on regional pollution reduction and carbon reduction as geographical distance decreases, with the spillover effect with close geographical relationships being higher than that of adjacent. Furthermore, the heterogeneity analysis reveals that the added value of digital technology and services has a significantly positive effect, while the spatial spillover effect of the added value of digital infrastructure is significantly negative. Finally, our mechanism judgements prove digital industrialization can impact the level of regional co-governance of pollution and carbon reduction through source prevention, process control, and end-treatment. Our study provides a factual basis for further promoting China's environmental pollution control and carbon reduction behavior and offers a method to use different spatial weights in depth. Knowledge and innovations have the greatest importance in the development of society, since the very beginnings of human civilization. With globalization and the technological revolution during the last few decades, knowledge has become a key resource for the economic growth and development of both nations and individual economic entities. Both developed and developing countries strive to raise the level of their own readiness for the development of the knowledge economy as much as possible. By promoting knowledge as the most important production resource, the world economy is rapidly transforming into an economy of knowledge and innovation. Accordingly, innovation has become a key condition for both global and local competitiveness of the organization. Innovations represent the commercialization of knowledge, turning ideas and research into added value of products, processes or services. Innovation occurs in order to create better performance, but the process is not exclusively automatic and always positive in nature. The innovation process should be carefully planned and clearly directed towards obtaining a positive final result. Large investments in research and development activities and other elements of the innovation process do not necessarily result in successful innovations. Innovation efforts and activities can be misdirected, and there is a possibility that good ideas will not be realized due to the creation of a bottleneck in some part of the innovation process. The innovation process is composed of different activities that interact with each other according to a clear order of execution: gathering information about the problem, research (general or applied), ideas and development, finding solutions. The basic stages of the innovation process are identifying an idea or problem (focusing), modeling innovation (invention), evaluating alternatives, making decisions and implementing the innovation. In the changed conditions of the economy, finding effective models of knowledge production and its commercial valorization into innovations gains importance. In this connection, the paper places special emphasis on the apostrophizing of the logic of spiral models in the creation and commercial valorization of knowledge. The conclusion was reached that these models have undoubtedly contributed to world economic development, but that with the emergence of the economic crisis caused by the Covid19 virus and, somewhat later, war events on Ukrainian soil, innovation in the service sector is growing compared to the improvement of innovation in the real sector. Many aspects of the valorization of knowledge into innovations dominantly in the service sector, characteristic of the period of globalization, with the change of geopolitical conditions in the world, starting with the emergence of the global crisis caused by the Covid19 virus, and especially with the outbreak of the war conflict in Ukraine, have been called into question until today. The article explores media depictions of industrial labour in Italy, with a special focus on visual, film and television portrayals, spanning from the 1960s to the first two decades of the twenty-first century. Rather than delving into an analysis of labour processes, the primary objective of the article is to scrutinise the gendered representations of work and whether and how the representation of work, including all professions, has played a pivotal role in shaping narratives about Italian society and its inherent contradictions. In this context, the article also emphasises the significance of what remains unrepresented, highlighting the absence of work as equally consequential as its presence. Of particular importance within this exploration is the examination of women's work, a realm less frequently depicted than that of men. The article dedicates specific attention to unravelling the nuances of women's role in the workforce, recognising their portrayal as a key element in understanding broader narratives about Italian society and its complexities. Industrial workers in Saudi Arabia constitute about one million workers, which is about 5% of the workforce in general in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, this study dealt with the spatial analysis of industrial workers and its distribution in administrative regions and in various industrial sectors and aimed to analyze the factors affecting its distribution. spatial, and its developmental role in industry, and in the gross domestic product in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The results showed the concentration of industrial workers in the regions: Riyadh, the Eastern Province, and Mecca, and emphasized the role of population, housing, industrial facilities, capital, and the rate of urbanization. It also showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between the role of industrial workers in industrial development and their contribution to the gross domestic product. Maritime trade, immigration and industrialization have resulted in the production of rich cultural narratives that port cities have long embodied as centers of industrial activities. Unfortunately, a large number of these locations, many of which date back to important social and economic turning points in the histories of various parts of the world remain neglected leading to dilapidation. In fact, this is particularly the situation in India. In this context, this research examines the industrial heritage Kuttichira, where the earliest recorded trade settlement in Calicut city in Kerala, India still remains albeit in a poor state. This research employs multiple research techniques to gather data. It first examines secondary literature. It then examines a case study within which a site visit and direct observations were conducted to observe the present condition of the heritage. An interview with an expert and interactions with a few local residents have also been carried out in order to understand the industrial heritage. Maps and drawings were created using the data gathered. The paper identifies the potentials of this industrial heritage to provide a sense of history and identity to the place. It concludes that heritage should be utilized for restoring the intangible heritage of the area, thus connecting the area with the current growth of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This document is an editorial for a special issue of the journal "Innovation & Development" focused on the financing of innovation for development in the Global South. The editorial highlights the need to address the relationship between finance and innovation, particularly in underdeveloped countries. It discusses the role of public financial institutions, such as national development banks, and explores novel forms of financing for innovation, such as micro-finance and venture capital. The editorial also introduces six research papers included in the special issue that touch on various aspects of finance and innovation in the Global South. Governments engage in infrastructural developments across the globe, and the level of success often colligates with institutional quality levels. However, despite the presence of governance, the lack of well‐developed infrastructure has bedevilled sub‐Saharan African (SSA) countries for decades. Therefore, this study investigates the governance‐led infrastructural development hypothesis for the SSA region from an institutional quality perspective towards addressing the infrastructural deficit challenges of the region. A combination of advanced panel econometric techniques was applied to data collected from the African Development Bank, World Bank World Development Indicator, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) to investigate the governance‐led infrastructural development hypothesis in SSA while controlling for financial development, economic growth, and industrialization in the region. The findings show that the interaction of institutional quality measures and governance indicators significantly and positively induces infrastructure in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA). Additionally, while economic growth and financial development yield no expected significant influence on infrastructural developments, industrialization plays a crucial role, as its spillover effects are not confined to boosting economic growth alone but also to infrastructural transformations. Thus, the provision of policy frameworks by authorities to strengthen institutions and promote good governance is vital for articulating and facilitating infrastructural development plans for SSA. For a long period of the 20th Century, industrialization was seen as the quickest and more effective path for progress and productive diversification, influencing the choice of public policies adopted by Latin American governments since the inter-war period up until the debt crisis and the lost decade of the 1980s. Using a long-term macroeconomic database for the period 1913–2013 and 11 Latin American countries, complemented with a dataset of exports by product for the same countries and years, a positive relationship between industrialization and economic growth was found, both for the long run and for episodes of acceleration and deceleration. This correlation seems to be stronger for large than for small economies, reflecting the importance of the size of the domestic market in order to take advantages of economies of scale in the process of industrialization. Three economic channels that may explain this positive correlation are empirically tested. The first one is the contribution of manufacturing to the different components of productivity growth (within- and shift-effects), for which a shift-share decomposition was estimated, both for the long-run, for subperiods and for acceleration and deceleration episodes. The second channel is the contribution of industrialization to gross capital accumulation, where a positive relationship was found between the change in the share of employment in manufacture with the rate of growth of physical capital. Finally, the learning-by-doing hypothesis is tested using the skill-level composition of manufacturing exports, finding a positive relationship between cumulative manufacturing production and the share of mid- and high-skill products in the exports' matrix. The main contributions of the paper are twofold: the empirical identification of the mechanisms through which industrialization can promote economic development, and the extension of the analysis of Latin American economies to the first half of the 20th Century, which is scarce in the literature because of lack of reliable data. This study examined the effects of public infrastructural development and industrialization on economic complexity in Africa, and how industrialization is moderating the effect of public infrastructural development on economic complexity. The study adopted the pooled ordinary least squares, the dynamic system generalized method of moments and the dynamic bias‐corrected least squares dummy variable estimators with a panel of 34 African economies over the period 2010–2021. The findings revealed that public infrastructural development and industrialization contribute positively and significantly toward enhancing economic complexity in Africa. We also found that industrialization substantially moderates and enhances the influence of public infrastructural development on economic complexity. Furthermore, the results show that trade openness, foreign direct investment inflow, international tourism arrival and institutional quality are potent factors enhancing Africa's economic complexity, while the role of human capital remains muted. These findings suggest that African leaders and policy‐makers can foster economic complexity across the continent by embracing policies that prioritize increased infrastructural development, industrialization, trade openness and foreign direct investment inflow while improving the quality of institutions within the region. Although three centuries of industrialisation and growth have led to unimaginably better lives for most people, economic, well-being and health outcomes differ widely across places, both between and within polities. We suggest that policy to reduce such differences and ameliorate their impacts requires a consideration of the role of 'placeless' agents in shaping places – here, subnational regions. Prior economic development at macro-scales has rewarded and empowered placeless agents: firms, people and institutions which rely for well-being, identity and profits not on a specific place, but rather on a type or types of place. Their choosy mobility and lack of embeddedness means interactions with specific places are functionally narrow, voluntary, self-interested and potentially problematic for embedded actors, and for the health and viability of the places within which they operate. We operationalise this concept by developing notions of economic, socio-cultural and civic placelessness, make some suggestions for measurement, and assess a number of government policies developed in the region of Wales that are in part reactions to the incursion and impacts of the placeless. This empirical study explores the relationship between land mortgage financing and urban economic development from the perspective of spatial spillovers. We develop a spatial Durbin model (SDM) using a dataset for 83 Chinese cities over the period 2007–2015, and find that land mortgage financing not only promotes local economic development, but also has a positive spatial spillover effect on economic development in other cities. Urban fixed assets investment plays a partial mediation role. However, compared with that of other cities, this positive spatial spillover is significantly weaker for the economic development of megacities and industrial cities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: The manufacturing sector is vital to the blistering economic transformation of developing countries such as Ethiopia. According to Ethiopia's industrial development strategy, one of the priority sub‐sectors of the manufacturing sector is the agricultural processing industry. This study focuses on the utilisation prospects, health, and environmental performance of afro‐food processing industries. The data were collected from 71 industry‐level respondents. The data collectors used Open Data Kit (ODK) packages as a data collection mechanism. The average utilisation of the cereal processors in Ethiopia was calculated to be 50.84%, 57.39%, 72.18%, 58.44%, and 42.81% for biscuits, macaroni, maize flour, spaghetti, and wheat flour, respectively. The average efficiency was determined to be 68.27%, 73.72%, 90.49%, 83.38%, and 64.76% for biscuits, macaroni, maize flour, spaghetti, and wheat flour, respectively. It is also noted that among the edible oil processors, peanut oil has the highest average efficiency (90.49%) and utilisation (72.18%). The lowest average efficiency and utilisation were determined to be 64.76% and 42.81% respectively for sunflower oil. From a health and environmental performance perspective, it is noted that 70.83% of oil processors and 59.57% of cereals processors have quality control laboratories. African countries are consistently trying to leverage industrialization to advance their economic development. Despite possessing favorable factors such as abundant natural resources, a surplus of low-cost labor, and an increasing number of established Special Economic Zones (SEZs), African countries are yet to fully maximize their potential and achieve sustainable and inclusive industrialization. This study explores the comparative advantages of African countries to determine the types of SEZs that can effectively accelerate industrialization. By leveraging the unique strengths and resources of each country, customized strategies for SEZs can be developed to attract investments, promote technological advancements, and foster sustainable economic growth. The research utilizes the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) matrix, which is grounded in Ricardian trade theory, examining trade data spanning from 2011 to 2021 to evaluate the competitive export capabilities of various countries. The findings consistently reveal that the selected countries (Ghana, Ethiopia, and South Africa) possess a significant and consistent comparative advantage in natural and agricultural resources compared to other sectors. Establishing SEZs that focus on these sectors can generate substantial socio-economic impacts, including attracting investments, creating employment opportunities, enhancing export capacities, stimulating economic growth, fostering linkages, facilitating skills and technology transfer, promoting spillover effects, encouraging specialization, developing infrastructure, and supporting value addition in agribusinesses. The result of this study will contribute to policy discussions and aid decision-making processes for policymakers, investors, and development practitioners in their efforts to advance industrial development across Africa.

The history of planning development in various countries shows that the core logic of planning is the spiral interweaving of control and development, and constantly makes corresponding adjustments to respond to changes and challenges in social and economic development. Most of the planning in western countries originated from control-oriented paradigm, then integrated development-oriented elements, and finally has evolved into comprehensive coordination-oriented planning paradigm. China's planning, which originated from development-oriented paradigm, has shifted towards control-oriented planning as represented by territorial spatial planning to tackle issues such as excessive consumption of resources. In the face of economic, social and environmental challenges, China's urban planning in the future should also move towards a comprehensive balance between control and development. The common thread of control is the sustainable development of economy, society, and environment. The common thread of development is to achieve the Chinese path to modernization. The content of control and development will vary with different spatial scales and time stages. Take Hubei's practice as an example, planning control is driven by the integrated management of watershed and planning development is led by the synchronization of new industrialization, IT application, new urbanization, and agricultural modernization. To achieve a holistic understanding of the intricate interactions among human activities, atmospheric chemistry, and acid rain in China, a rigorous analysis of rainwater chemistry was made using a dataset comprising 2656 data points from 24 sites. The main cation and anion in the chemical composition of precipitation were Ca2+ and SO42− in China, with an average concentration of 169.9 μeq/L and 135.4 μeq/L, respectively. Acid rain generally occurs in southern cities such as Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Xiamen, and Chongqing. There were evident regional disparities in acidity and ion concentrations in rainwater, with an increase in acidity and a decrease in ion concentrations from north to south across China. Utilizing positive matrix factorization, the study found that NH4+, SO42−, and NO3− mainly originated from anthropogenic sources such as fossil fuel combustion, vehicle exhaust emissions, agricultural fertilization, and industrial emissions (as reflected by F3 and F4). Ca2+ mainly stems from crustal factors, including industrial dust and natural crust (as represented by F1 and F4). Na+ and Cl− were traceable from marine sources (as reflected by F5), while Mg2+ originated from crust origin (as presented by F1). K+ was mainly derived from a mixed source of crust, marine, and biomass burning (as indicated by F2 and F3). The correlation analyses showed that SO42− and NO3− showed significant correlations with GDP and population. F− was associated with wastewater, which may be linked to the production of brick and tiles from clay with high fluoride contents. The pH was negatively related to industrial wastewater. Long-term analysis of precipitation chemistry in four cities suggested a clear decrease in the proportion of SO42− but a considerable increase in the proportion of NO3− in anions in metropolitans of Shanghai and Chongqing due to the environmental measures that targeted reducing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions and increase of vehicles. This showed that pollution control strategies had an impact on precipitation ion concentrations. These results can conclude that economic and industrial growth, which will increase energy consumption, utilization of coal combustion, and a subsequent rise in pollutant emissions, can contribute to the change in the chemical compositions of rainwater and the exacerbation of acid rain. The aim of this action research project is to (re)define and (re)get to know the material trachyandesite. A magmatic rock that has contributed to the identity of the Massif Central region, through the construction of towns since the 15th century, its exploitation has accelerated with industrial growth. Its presence grew and its uses spread throughout France. If this stone confers a specific and visual identity, it is today one of the components of the built heritage of a French region, at one with the landscape because it is at its heart. Understanding the materiality of this stone and its many characteristics is a key factor in the restoration of old buildings. Could knowledge of the qualities of trachyandesite (refractory stone, high pyroscopic resistance) as a local, low-carbon-emission material enhance the value of constructions and/or restorations that could be described as geosourced?
