Background: Many caregivers are insufficiently prepared, and little is known about measures that can be employed to enhance their preparedness. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the factors associated with caregiver preparedness and establish a predictive model including the relationship between preparedness, burden, resilience and anxiety. Design: A cross‐sectional design was used. Methods: The sample included 172 family caregivers who were selected from one private hospital and daytime nursing centres. Caregivers were recruited from 2018 to 2019; they completed assessments for caregiver preparedness, anxiety, resilience and burden. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with preparedness. Results: Preparedness was significantly associated with high levels of resilience and a low level of burden, while it was not associated with anxiety. Caregivers' gender, experience and cohabitation status were the main predictors. Resilience is an explanatory factor for caregiver preparedness in the predictive model. Conclusion: The demographic variables related to preparedness can be used to guide efforts to meet the needs of vulnerable caregivers. A caregiver's preparedness depends on their level of burden and resilience. Nursing interventions focused on these aspects could make the caregiver's role easier and improve the quality of care provided. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic poses risks to the quality of life (QoL) of relatives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. This paper investigates relatives' QoL and associated risk and buffering factors before and during the pandemic. Method: Surveys were administered to three samples of relatives in the Netherlands in 2019 (N = 105) and during the first waves of COVID‐19 in June (N = 207) and October 2020 (N = 332). Associations between QoL and care burden, care competence, social support, and resilience, and changes over time were analysed using (logistic) regressions. Results: No significant changes in overall QoL nor its domains were found. Care burden was negatively associated with QoL and increased during the pandemic. Care competence was lower than in 2019. Competence, social support, and resilience were positively associated with QoL. Conclusions: Although relatives' QoL remained stable, the pandemic poses non‐negligible risks to their wellbeing. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the caregiver burden, death obsessions, and somatic symptoms; and whether the death obsessions are playing a mediating role in the relationship between the caregiver burden and somatic symptoms. The study was done on the informal dementia caregivers residing in India. Three questionnaires in a google form were circulated. The correlational and mediation analysis revealed that there was a significant and positive correlation between the caregiver burden, death obsessions, and somatic symptoms. Age-related motor impairments often cause caregiver dependency or even hospitalization. However, comprehensive investigations of the different motor abilities and the changes thereof across the adult lifespan remain sparse. We, therefore, extensively assessed essential basic and complex motor functions in 444 healthy adults covering a wide age range (range 21 to 88 years). Basic motor functions, here defined as simple isolated single or repetitive movements in one direction, were assessed by means of maximum grip strength (GS) and maximum finger-tapping frequency (FTF). Complex motor functions, comprising composite sequential movements involving both proximal and distal joints/muscle groups, were evaluated with the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTT), and the Purdue Pegboard Test. Men achieved higher scores than women concerning GS and FTF, whereas women stacked more pins per time than men during the Purdue Pegboard Test. There was no significant sex effect regarding JTT. We observed a significant but task- specific reduction of basic and complex motor performance scores across the adult lifespan. Linear regression analyses significantly predicted the participants' ages based on motor performance scores (R² = 0.502). Of note, the ratio between the left- and right-hand performance remained stable across ages for all tests. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed three motor components across all tests that represented dexterity, force, and speed. These components were consistently present in young (21-40 years), middle-aged (41-60 years), and older (61-88 years) adults, as well as in women and men. Based on the three motor components, K-means clustering analysis differentiated high- and low-performing participants across the adult life span. The rich motor data set of 444 healthy participants revealed age- and sex-dependent changes in essential basic and complex motor functions. Notably, the comprehensive assessment allowed for generating robust motor components across the adult lifespan. Our data may serve as a reference for future studies of healthy subjects and patients with motor deficits. Moreover, these findings emphasize the importance of comprehensively assessing different motor functions, including dexterity, force, and speed, to characterize human motor abilities and their age-related decline. Aim: To examine specific correlates that may affect retention outcomes of neural stem cell therapy trials in families screened for cerebral palsy. Design: A prospective correlational study. Methods: Primary caregivers completed surveys of psychological resilience, care burden and family caregiver tasks. The overall data and differences between groups were analysed and compared. Results: Resilience was negatively correlated with the care ability and closely related to the monthly household income and educational level of the caregivers. Factors affecting the final retention rate included the type of disease, number of combined disorders, monthly household income, primary caregivers' education level and resilience. Conclusion: Economic level, literacy and psychological status may affect trial retention. These findings can provide tips for preparing for subsequent screening, identification and intervention in stem cell clinical trials. Implication for the Profession and/or Patient Care: The study results may provide nursing care tips to make recruitment more efficient, reduce trial costs, support patient‐centredness and accelerate trial progress. Aim: To explore associations of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers of neurodegeneration and amyloidosis with caregiver burden, cognition and functionality in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) paired with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) and healthy older people. Methods: Consecutive outpatients with DLB were matched with outpatients with AD according to sex, cognitive scores and dementia stage, and with cognitively healthy controls according to age and sex to investigate associations of cerebrospinal fluid amyloid-β (Aβ42,Aβ40,Aβ38), tau, phospho-tau Thr181, ubiquitin, α-synuclein and neurofilament light with caregiver burden, functionality, reverse digit span, a clock drawing test, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Severe MMSE, adjusted for sex, age, education, dementia duration and APOE-ε4 alleles. Results: Overall, 27 patients with DLB (78.98 ± 9.0 years-old; eleven APOE-ε4 +) were paired with 27 patients with AD (81.50 ± 5.8 years-old; twelve APOE-ε4 +) and 27 controls (78.98 ± 8.7 years-old; four APOE-ε4 +); two-thirds were women. In AD, Aβ42/Aβ38 and Aβ42 were lower, while tau/Aβ42 and phospho-tau Thr181/Aβ42 were higher; α-synuclein/Aβ42 was lower in DLB and higher in AD. The following corrected associations remained significant: in DLB, instrumental functionality was inversely associated with tau/phospho-tau Thr181 and tau/Aβ42, and reverse digit span associated with α-synuclein; in AD, instrumental functionality was inversely associated with neurofilament light, clock drawing test scores inversely associated with phospho-tau Thr181/Aβ42 and α-synuclein/Aβ42, and Severe MMSE inversely associated with tau/Aβ42 and tau/phospho-tau Thr181. Conclusions: Cerebrospinal fluid phospho-tau Thr181 in DLB was similar to AD, but not Aβ42. In associations with test scores, biomarker ratios were superior to isolated biomarkers, while worse functionality was associated with axonal degeneration only in AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Caregivers' care-related thoughts critically effect their well-being. Currently, there is a lack of validated measures to systematically assess caregivers' functional and dysfunctional thoughts. We therefore aimed to develop a measure of caregivers' thoughts that assesses not only their dysfunctional but also their functional thoughts in multiple domains. A pool of potential questionnaire items was generated from therapy sessions with caregivers and was rated by experts. A sample of 322 main family caregivers (Mage = 63.9 years) of a person with dementia then completed a set of 28 items about their care-related thoughts and a number of related measures at three measurement points. Items were then aggregated via a formative measurement approach based on theoretical considerations. Correlational analyses were used to examine the construct validity of the subscale scores. The final 28-item scale assesses caregiving thoughts in four distinct domains: dysfunctional caregiving standards, self-care, dysfunctional assumptions about dementia, and acceptance. The correlational analyses demonstrated the subscales' construct validity, by showing that scale scores are meaningfully related to theoretically relevant constructs. The Caregiving Thoughts Scale is a promising measure of caregivers' thoughts in four important domains. The scale can be applied in clinical research settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extensive studies have explored the factors affecting caregiving stress, but how oral health of care recipients (CRs) associates with caregiving stress and the mechanism behind it are not well‐known. Guided by Stress Process Theory, this study addressed such research gaps. Caregiver services dataset came from the 13th National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants in the United States (N = 1289). Caregiving stress included physical, emotional, and financial stress. The oral health of CRs was self‐rated by a single item. The functional ability of CRs was assessed by activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). PROCESS 3.4 for SPSS 26.0 was used to conduct the mediation analyses. Results from the study showed that caregivers reported slightly high levels of physical (M = 3.06, SD = 1.33, Range = 1–5), emotional (M = 3.43, SD = 1.28, Range = 1–5), and financial (M = 2.83, SD = 1.43, Range = 1–5) stress. The results from hierarchical linear regression revealed that poor oral health of CRs was significantly associated with higher levels of physical (B = 0.11, p < 0.001), emotional (B = 0.09, p < 0.01), and financial (B = 0.12, p < 0.001) stress, respectively. The functional ability of CRs mediated such relationships between the oral health of CRs and the caregiving stress of their family caregivers. Findings from this study enrich our theoretical and practical understanding of caregiving stress in aged care and offer programs and policy implications of oral and physical healthcare for community‐dwelling older adults. Aim: Our study aimed to investigate the caregiving burden and its associated factors in family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. Design: Correlational study. Method: Using the convenience sampling method, 215 caregivers were recruited from outpatient clinics affiliated with a tertiary referral psychiatric hospital in Iran. The caregiving burden was measured by the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI‐22), and associations between caregiving burden and potential factors were examined using multiple regression analysis. We used the STROBE checklist to report the results. Results: Family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia reported a high level of caregiving burden, with 38.2% of the caregivers perceiving severe burden relating to their role. In the regression analysis, age, gender, educational level, income, job loss due to caregiving, relationship with patient, disease duration and frequency of caregiving were statistically significant predictors of caregiving burden.
