Infertility affects millions of people of reproductive age worldwide. Thyroid hormones and prolactin (PRL) affect reproduction and pregnancy; therefore, these two hormones influence fertility. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarise the strength of the correlation between serum PRL and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in infertile women and to explore selected factors influencing the correlation. We conducted a systematic search of online databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, SAGE and Google Scholar) from inception until March 2021 and a manual search of the bibliographies of the included studies to identify relevant publications. The original research paper describing the correlation between PRL and TSH in reproductive-age women with infertility (primary and secondary) was included. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies. A random effect model was used to estimate the pooled correlations of PRL and TSH, followed by an assessment of heterogeneity and a sensitivity analysis. From a total of 822 relevant articles identified, 11 were eligible and included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The random effect pooled correlation estimates between PRL and TSH was 0.431 (95% CI: 0.251, 0.582), with substantial heterogeneity between the included studies (I² = 80%, τ ² = 0.067, P < 0.001). No significant publication bias was observed. Study region, types of infertility, sample size and year of the study did not influence the correlation estimates. Background: Smoking cessation programs have been widely implemented especially at the Malaysian Ministry of Health's facilities to help smokers reduce their smoking habits and slowly stop smoking. This unhealthy practice is the cause of many diseases as there are more than 6000 poisons in cigarette smoke that can give implication to environmental and health impact to those around smokers. This paper aims to explore the effectiveness of peer support intervention in improving the knowledge, attitudes and motivation (KAM) of allied health male trainee smokers in Malaysian training institutes. Materials and Methods: A cluster randomisation control trial was conducted among male smoker trainees at six training institutes involving 324 respondents. Data on knowledge, attitude, motivation, socio-demographic characteristics factors were collected using the selfadministers questionnaire. Evaluation was performed three times during baseline, three and six months to see the differences between intervention and control groups. Repeated measure Anova and Chi-square test were used in data analysis. This study utilised Generalised Estimating Equations (GEE) to handle the clustering effects. Result: The mean value of the knowledge intervention group at baseline was 10.87 (2.39), 12.38 (2.24) on the second evaluation and 13.88 (2.24) on the third evaluation, whereas the mean for the control group was 10.44 (2.27), 10.36 (1.88) on the second evaluation and 10.47 (2.16) on the third evaluation. For the attitude variable, the mean value for the intervention group at baseline was 9.12 (1.25), followed by 10.19 (0.94) on the second evaluation and 10.59 (0.85) on the third evaluation. Meanwhile, the control group recorded a mean value at baseline of 7.71 (1.39), followed by 8.25 (1.52) on the second evaluation and 8.74 (1.83) on the third evaluation. The mean value of knowledge and attitudes was always higher than the control group throughout the baseline to the third evaluation. There was a significant difference in the mean value for knowledge and attitude between groups based on time with a p-value <0.05. The mean value for motivation in the intervention group at baseline was 1.43 (0.49), whereas 1.15 (0.35) on the second evaluation, and 1.08 (0.27) on the third evaluation; meanwhile in the control group, the mean at baseline was 1.71 (0.46), followed by 1.46 (0.50) on the second evaluation and 1.31 (0.47) on the third evaluation. There was no significant difference in the mean value for motivation between groups based on time with a p-value> 0.05. Conclusion: This study found that good knowledge, favourable attitudes and good motivation are the key drivers of a smoker's success in quitting smoking. The approach used to help smokers is very important in determining the success of a program. Therefore, those who conducted smoking cessation programs can take the opportunity to apply this method in helping smokers to improve their knowledge, attitudes and motivation for changing their behaviour. Background: Obesity does not always lead to non-communicable diseases. The objective of this paper is to estimate the prevalence of obese and disease-free population among Malaysian adult aged 18 years and above and to determine the lifestyle and dietary factors on this population. Materials and Methods: Data from the Malaysia National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2015, a cross sectional design, applied two stage stratified cluster sampling. Obese and disease-free population was defined as population of obese adults with no known diagnosis of diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Descriptive analysis of the background characteristics was performed and complex sampling was used to determine the prevalence of obese and disease-free population. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with obese and disease free. Data was analysed using SPSS version 25.A p-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Result: 23.7% of Malaysian adults were obese and disease free. Multivariate analysis showed there were no association between lifestyle determinants (physical activity, smoking and alcohol) and dietary factors (fruits and vegetables intake) on these population. Significant associations were revealed among adults aged 18-24 [aOR: 5.00 (95% CI3.22-7.73)] and 25-44 years old [aOR: 2.45(95%CI 1.65-3.64)]. The Nagelkerke R Square analysis predicted that with each passing year, the probability of these population becoming unhealthy obesity increases by 4.4%. Conclusion: Obese and disease-free population is present among obese population. No significant association was reported for lifestyle determinants and dietary factors on these population. AIM: Computer vision syndrome has been an issue of concern among students who use digital devices continuously. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and level of knowledge on computer vision syndrome and its relationship with associated factors among undergraduate students in a public university in Malaysia. METHODS: This study was conducted between 26 May and 23 June 2022 at National University of Malaysia. A cross-sectional study among 208 undergraduate students from a public university was conducted. A self-reported questionnaire via Google Form was used to capture the data among the undergraduates. The prevalence and associated factors of computer vision syndrome were each evaluated using the validated Computer Vision Syndrome Questionnaire and Computer Vision Syndrome Survey Form 3 questionnaires, respectively, while knowledge of computer vision syndrome was assessed using a validated questionnaire from a previous study. All the data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 26.0 software (IBM Corp.; Armonk, NY, USA). RESULTS: The prevalence of computer vision syndrome among undergraduates was 63.0% (n = 131), with 91.9% having poor knowledge of computer vision syndrome. Significant associations toward computer vision syndrome were found among undergraduates who have refractive errors/wearing glass (69.3%), screen edge at or above horizontal eye level (79.4%), uncomfortable sitting postures (79.4%) and close eye--screen distance (82.0%). In-depth analysis showed that having refractive errors/wearing glasses (aOR: 1.93; CI: 1.05, 3.57), uncomfortable sitting postures (aOR: 2.01; CI: 1.08, 3.74), and close eye--screen distance (aOR: 2.81; CI: 1.31, 6.05) had odd chance to develop computer vision syndrome. CONCLUSION: The study's findings denoted that digital device users should have more knowledge of computer vision syndrome and practice the preventable measures, such as proper viewing distance and angle, upright sitting postures, appropriate screen and surrounding illuminance, as well as regular eye check-ups. The transition from school to university brings significant adjustments in lifestyle, body weight, and living environment for young adults, potentially impacting their quality of life. Emerging evidence suggests the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have exacerbated these changes. This cross-sectional study involved 361 young adults (18–25 years) from Malaysian tertiary institutions, aiming to identify factors associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) post-COVID-19 restrictions. Data were collected online between April and July 2022, utilizing the WHOQOL-BREF for HRQOL assessment. Participants, with a median age of 23, scored highest in the physical health domain (mean: 63.2, SD = 16.2) and lowest in psychological health (mean: 58.2, SD = 16.9). Physical health domain scores varied by ethnicity, the field of study, weight category, and prescription medicine usage; environmental health scores by ethnicity and household income; and social health scores by age. Moderate perceived stress and low perceived support were significant predictors of poor HRQOL. Across the weight categories, sleep quality, perceived stress, and support have consistently impacted the HRQOL domain scores. This study underscores the multifaceted influences on young adults' quality of life during the transition to university, especially in post-pandemic adjustments, highlighting the importance of addressing factors such as perceived stress and support to enhance overall well-being. The 6‐hour (6‐h) time to wound closure was a controversial issue as studies have shown that time was not a substantial factor. Wounds in the face are often considered to have a lower infection risk. Despite this, the cause of injury was not extensively discussed in relation to this context. The primary objective was to investigate the association between the 6‐h time to wound closure and wound complications following emergency management of facial soft tissue injuries (STIs). Additionally, the secondary objective was to explore other factors contributing to wound complications. A retrospective record review was conducted in our hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2021. Medical records of patients with facial STIs due to road traffic accidents were included. Simple random sampling was used to select records meeting inclusion criteria. Data on demographic, injury, and treatment characteristics were collected using a standardized proforma. Descriptive, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed, including chi‐square tests and binary logistic regression. A total of 295 patient records were included, with most patients being males (77.3%) and of Malay ethnicity (54.9%). The median age was 31.0 years. Majority of patients were treated within 6 h of injury (93.9%). Complications were documented in 6.1% of cases, including wound dehiscence and infection. Multivariate analysis revealed a significant association between 6‐h time to closure and wound complications (OR: 7.53, 95% CI: 1.90–29.81, p = 0.004). Grade of surgeon on duty (OR: 4.61, 95% CI: 1.25–16.95, p = 0.02) and diabetes mellitus (OR: 6.12, 95% CI: 1.23–30.38, p = 0.03) were also shown to have a statistically significant association with wound complications. A 6‐h time to wound closure, grade of surgeon on duty and diabetes mellitus were three major factors involved in facial wound complications following road traffic accidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION Dual/poly tobacco use is common among youths globally. However, in Malaysia information on dual/poly tobacco use is scarce, thus the present study examines the prevalence and factors associated with dual/poly tobacco users among school-going adolescents in Malaysia. METHODS We derived data on tobacco and e-cigarette use among Malaysian adolescents from a nationwide school-based study conducted in 2016. A total of 13135 adolescents responded in the cross-sectional survey which used multistage sampling to select a representative sample of school-going adolescents aged 11-19 years. A standard validated questionnaire was used to obtain the data and multiple logistic regression was conducted to assess factors associated with dual/ poly tobacco use. RESULTS The prevalence of dual/poly tobacco use was 6.5%, more than half of which were both conventional and e-cigarette users. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that the likelihood of dual tobacco use was significantly higher among males (AOR=14.73; 95% CI: 9.11-23.81), secondary school students, those aged 16-19 years (AOR=5.99; 95% CI: 4.04-8.87), natives of Sabah (AOR=7.41; 95% CI: 3.48-15.79), and those never been taught on the health hazards of tobacco at school, exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS) at home, school or other public areas, and had a positive perception of e-cigarettes and lower perception of the harms of tobacco smoking. CONCLUSIONS Although the prevalence of dual/poly users was still low among Malaysian school-going adolescents, proactive measures should be taken to reduce dual tobacco use among youth in Malaysia with focus on the factors identified in this study. INTRODUCTION Smoking is a known risk factor for many chronic diseases. Illness and death due to smoking are a significant public health burden in many countries. This study aims to address the information gap in smoking-related mortality in Malaysia by estimating the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortalities due to smoking among Malaysian adults. METHODS We analyzed data on 2525 respondents, aged 24-64 years, of the Malaysian Non-Communicable Disease Surveillance survey conducted September 2005 to February 2006. Mortality records from the Malaysian National Registration Department were linked to the MYNCDS-1 data to determine respondents' mortality status over 12 years from 2006 to 2018. Associations between smoking and all-cause mortalities were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression with adjustments for non-communicable disease and sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. RESULTS The prevalence of daily smoking was 21.2% (95% CI: 19.0-23.7). During the 31668 person-years follow-up, 213 deaths from all causes occurred, where 68 deaths were among smokers (13.2%), and 452 were among non-smokers (6.3%). Smoking was associated with a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ration, AHR=1.79; 95% CI: 1.12- 2.97). These associations remained significant after excluding mortalities in the first two years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Daily smoking is associated with a significantly higher risk of all-cause death. Behavioral and pharmacological smoking cessation interventions should be intensified among smokers to reduce the risk of mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a global health burden that affects a broad scope of individuals worldwide. Pharmacists, as members of the multidisciplinary team, play a significant role in promoting public awareness towards potential risk factors for NCDs. This study aims to gauge the knowledge of NCDs risk factors among pharmacy students of a Malaysian public university. This paper also outlines perspectives of pharmacy students on the strategies to raise the awareness of NCDs risk factors. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Faculty of Pharmacy, International Islamic University Malaysia. Self-administered questionnaires were pretested and validated before being distributed to pharmacy students across different years of study. The data indicated an average level of knowledge towards risk factors of NCDs among study participants with no significant differences in knowledge between male and female genders (p = 0.583). However, there is a significant difference in knowledge concerning the year of study (p < 0.001); as positive correlation can be seen between the level of education and the knowledge of NCDs risk factor. Most of the students (75%) were unaware of the planning by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to control NCDs. Reinforcement of NCDs-related education activities is imperative in order to increase the overall awareness concerning the risk factors of NCDs among future pharmacy practitioners. Malaysia is a multi-ethnic country with Malay, Chinese and Indian being the dominant ethnic groups. This paper investigates the three ethnic cultures in Malaysia by examining the individual-level values of managers and professionals. Based on 528 responses to a Schwartz Value Survey ( SVS) questionnaire, the paper identifies partial convergence of the value systems of Malay, Chinese and Indian people. It was found that the three ethnic groups do not differ significantly in the individualistic value dimensions of Self-enhancement and Openness-to-change. However, Malays are found to be more conservative and less self-transcendent than Chinese or Indians, while Chinese and Indians attribute the same importance to these two sets of values. Background. Assessment drives students' learning. It measures the level of students' understanding. We aimed to determine whether performance in continuous assessment can predict failure in the final professional examination results. Methods. We retrieved the in-course continuous assessment (ICA) and final professional examination results of 3 cohorts of medical students (n=245) from the examination unit of the International Medical University, Seremban, Malaysia. The ICA was 3 sets of composite marks derived from course works, which includes summative theory paper with short answer questions and 1 of the best answers. The clinical examination includes end-of-posting practical examination. These examinations are conducted every 6 months in semesters 6, 7 and 8; they are graded as pass/fail for each student. The final professional examination including modified essay questions (MEQs), 18-question objective structured practical examination (OSPE) and a 16-station objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), were graded as pass/fail. Failure in the continuous assessment that can predict failure in each component of the final professional examination was tested using chi-square test and presented as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results. Failure in ICA in semesters 6-8 strongly predicts failure in MEQs, OSPE and OSCE of the final professional examination with OR of 3.8-14.3 (all analyses p<0.001) and OR of 2.4-6.9 (p<0.05). However, the correlation was stronger with MEQs and OSPE compared to OSCE. Conclusion. ICA with theory and clinical examination had a direct relationship with students' performance in the final examination and is a useful assessment tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a chronic functional disorder where treatment should be tailored to the individual needs. While customized therapy with a physiotherapist has evidence-based benefits, it comes at a cost and the facility may not be available to some, especially in rural areas. An alternative option is a home-based treatment called MEND (Move, Eye, Neck stretching, and Deep breathing exercises) therapy. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of MEND therapy in PPPD compared to the hospital-based vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT). Methods: 59 PPPD patients completed the randomized-controlled study comparing MEND therapy (intervention) and hospital-based VRT (control). EuroQOL Group quality of life questionnaire (EQ-5D), Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), and 21-question Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) were monitored at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks. Results: At the end of the study, 100% patients on MEND therapy found it beneficial compared to 79.3% in the control group. The MEND therapy provided significant improvements in the physical (P = .007), functional (P = .0006), emotional (P = .0003), and total DHI (P = .0003) with a medium to large effect size. The control group showed significant improvement only in the functional elements of DHI (P = .04), and total DHI (P = .04) with a small to medium effect size. Factors influencing the perception of landscapes have been the subject of research in the last 40 years. Indigenous and native plants are commonly restricted to informal or naturalistic designed landscapes. This research project investigates the use of native plants as a formal landscape element. As the world is becoming more urbanized (United Nations, 2010), gardens are becoming an increasingly important contributor to people's health and well-being (Dunnett & Qasim, 2000). The research has highlighted some elements that tend to affect visual preferences. This paper discusses a study conducted to determine preferences of Malaysian landscape professionals and students in landscape architecture and horticulture on two native ornamental plants, Molineria latifolia var. megacarpa (Lemba) and Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Kemunting), that are grown in soilless media with the potential for use in urban landscapes. Participants of this study comprised of landscape architects (20 respondents), architects (20), nursery owners (20), Bachelor of Horticulture students (80) (Faculty of Agriculture, UPM), and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture students (80 respondents) (Faculty of Design and Architecture, UPM), with a total of 220 respondents. Data collected were analyzed through descriptive analysis, Chi square and reliability test using SPSS. Results indicated that 88.2% of the respondents agreed that Molineria latifolia var. megacarpa (Lemba) could be a potential urban landscape plant, while 92.7% of them agreed that Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Kemunting) could be domesticated, and is therefore a potential urban landscape plant. Majority of the respondents (49% to 55%) preferred the plants grown individually, while others (40% to 49%) preferred both plants in the form of mass planting. Meanwhile, using the Likert's Scale, about half (50% to 52%) of the amateurs and professionals of the landscape field rated 4 (Like) for both the plants, whereas 10% to 15% of them marked 5 (Extremely Like) to show their acceptance towards the two new native plants. This finding indicates bright future for the two undomesticated wild native plants to be used as urban landscape plants. Thus, it is concluded that Molineria latifolia var. megacarpa (Lemba) and Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Kemunting) grown in soilless media have a high potential to become urban, native landscape plants. (1) Background: Achieving successful tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes among diabetic patients is a real challenge as TB complicates control of diabetes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an integrated dual management educational module, MID-DOTS, which uses the mmotivational interviewing (MI) technique implemented within directly observed treatment as part of a short course (DOTS) program in TB patients with diabetes (TB/DM). A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the northeastern state of Malaysia. (2) Methods: One hundred and twenty-four TB patients with diabetes received educational intervention using a MID-DOT module that used the MI technique, which was repetitively applied by TB nurses throughout a 6-month DOTS program while another 122 patients were given standard health education. Study outcomes include the proportion of patients with successful TB treatment, and changes in HbA1c and diabetic self-care scores at 6 months. (3) Results: The successful TB treatment outcome was 88% in the intervention group versus 72% in the control group (RR = 1.24; 95%CI 1.16, 1.58). A significant reduction of HbA1c (mean difference 0.82%; 95%CI 0.66, 0.98) and significantly higher diabetes self-care score (mean difference 8.49; 95%CI 7.38, 9.59) were also shown in the intervention group. (4) Conclusions: A dual TB/DM educational strategy which integrates the MI technique applied repetitively within the DOTS program is effective in increasing successful TB treatment as well as improving diabetic outcomes. Offenders who return to the community need social support to prevent recidivism, which has been challenging, necessitating a formal program (i.e., befrienders programs) where volunteers "befriend" these offenders as a way to provide social capital. However, the challenge to the recruitment to these programs is the question if just anyone could be a befriender for these offenders. This study explores the willingness of individuals to befriend an offender, along with their previous experience of exposure to a friend with a criminal background, which will provide insights for the recruitment purpose. This mixed-design study explored if 180 university students had a friend with an offender-status and their willingness to befriend other offenders along with their explanation. Chi-square tests of independence showed that having a friend with an offender-status has a relationship with the participants' willingness to befriend other offenders, while there is no gender difference in their willingness. Content analysis showed various motivations for willingness that point to the general aspect of humanity and empathy of the participants, although prior contacts with an offender may impact getting to know other offenders. Patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) have an increased risk of psychological distress. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine factors associated with psychological burden, quality of life (QoL) and patient satisfaction among adults living with CSU. Participants completed the self-administered Urticaria Activity Score-7 (UAS-7), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS 21), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and Short Assessment Patient Satisfaction (SAPS) questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the independent predictors of depression, anxiety, stress, QoL and patient satisfaction. From a total of 115 subjects with a median age of 42.6 years, range (19–89 years). 60.9% subjects reported moderate-to-severe CSU, 26.1% reported symptoms of depression, 54.8% had anxiety, 40.0% had stress, and 36.5% reported severely impaired QoL. The median UAS-7 score was 20 (IQR 11–27) while the median score of DLQI was 8 (IQR 4–13). The median score of SAPS was 20 (IQR 17–21). Low-income and severe disease were the significant predictors for depression while severe disease was predictive of impaired QoL and depression. Introduction: Engagement in occupations is an essential aspect of daily life among older people. Changes in age are often associated with changes in the pattern of engagement in occupations. However, the relationship between the actual and desired activities pattern of occupational engagement remains unclear among community-dwelling older adults in Malaysia. This study aimed to determine occupational engagement for each activity and occupational gaps related to domains among the older adults. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 335 community-dwelling older people, using the Malay version of the Occupational Gaps Questionnaire (OGQ-M). Findings: The findings indicate that there are significant differences in occupational engagement across domains: leisure (p < 0.001), social (p = 0.04) and total occupational domains (p < 0.001). There is a significant difference between actual and desired performed activities in doing laundry (p = 0.031), outdoor activities (p < 0.001), listening to the radio and watching television/video (p = 0.003), helping and supporting others (p = 0.019), travelling for pleasure (p < 0.001) and performing voluntary work (p = 0.025). Conclusion: In conclusion, OGQ is a useful tool in screening the occupational gaps among community-dwelling older adults. Age, health and continuity of roles and responsibility as caretakers of the family are several factors that lead to higher occupational gaps among the older people in the community. With the emergence of occupational engagement and gaps, advancements in health care delivery are necessary for retirement planning among community-dwelling older adults in enhancing active participation towards better retirement life. In 2016, World Health Organization (WHO) estimated more than 650 million obese adults, resulting in a country's health burden. This study aims to determine the prevalence of obesity and its associated factors among Malaysian adults. A total of 5820 respondents, aged 18 to 59 years, from the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019, were included for the data analysis. The prevalence of obesity was described and multivariate analyses were conducted to determine the factors associated with obesity. The prevalence of obesity among Malaysian adults was 20.1%, based on the findings from this study. Multivariate analyses showed that women, being Malays, Indians, and other Bumiputeras, were significantly associated with a higher risk of obesity. Besides, those diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and hypertension were also significantly associated with greater risk of obesity. This study explores the correlates of sociodemographic factors, smoking, and caloric knowledge to body mass index awareness with a focus on Malaysia. Logistic regressions were estimated to examine sociodemographic factors associated with body mass index awareness. More than half of respondents were unaware of their body mass index (54.8%). Age was negatively associated with body mass index awareness. Adults without formal education were less likely to know their body mass index than those with tertiary‐level education. Adults were less likely to be aware of their body mass index if they engaged in smoking. Adults with knowledge of the definition of calories were more aware of their body mass index than others. The findings emphasize the urgent need for a forthcoming sociodemographic factors‐specific policy directed toward improving body mass index awareness to lower the prevalence of obesity in Malaysia. BACKGROUND: Dental professionals have been reported to be constantly exposed to work-related musculoskeletal disorders with symptoms often started as early as the student phase. Risk perception may play an important role in modifying risk at work. OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of gender, academic level, and the presence of painful symptoms on the perception of risk factors at work contributing to musculoskeletal symptoms among dental students of Melaka, Malaysia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 183 clinical year dental students based on a convenience sample. The data were collected using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Job Factor Questionnaire for assessment of musculoskeletal symptoms and risk factors at work respectively. Study data were evaluated using percentage, median, Cochran's Q test, Bonferroni correction, multiple linear regression analysis and Mann-Whitney U Test. The analysis was interpreted considering a 95 % confidence interval and significant level at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Dental students reported a high prevalence (86.9 %) of musculoskeletal symptoms mostly affected the neck, shoulder, lower and upper back body regions. No significant difference in perception was found with the gender. A significant (P < 0.05) higher perception was observed in fourth-year students. The presence of painful symptoms was significantly (P < 0.05) associated with working in the same position, prolonged duration of work and use of tools. CONCLUSIONS: Priority in implementing ergonomic education throughout the training in the dental schools should be considered to improve perception and reduce musculoskeletal disorders associated with the dental profession. Burnout syndrome is a condition marked by emotional exhaustion, deterioration in motivation and lack of commitment, resulting from long-lasting workplace stress, characterized by exhaustion, negative feelings towards one's work and reduced professional efficacy. Healthcare workers are at particularly high risk for burnout due to high levels of stress. Our objectives were to determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome among doctors in Sabah and factors associated with it. This multi-centre cross-sectional study was carried out among doctors working in five Sabah main hospitals. Data were collected by using self-administered questionnaires consisting of basic socio-demographic information and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). Overall, a total of 523 doctors consented to participate in this study. The prevalence of personal burnout, work-related burnout, and patient-related burnout among doctors were 57.1%, 48.8%, and 30.4% respectively. Chi-square analysis showed factors that were associated to personal burnout and work-related burnout, were marital status, duration of service and position in the service. Duration of service was the only factor associated with patient-related burnout. The prevalence of burnout syndrome in Sabah should not to be overlooked and more researches are indicated to look into prevention of burnout syndrome in Malaysian setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated implementation of telemedicine in healthcare facilities for delivery of care. Healthcare providers' acceptance of the telemedicine services is important for successful implementation of this new system. A questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has been used to measure user acceptance of telemedicine service. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the English version of the questionnaire into Malay, to extend the availability and utilization of this questionnaire in Malaysia. A forward and backward translation of the questionnaire was conducted to produce the TAM in the Malay version (Malay-TAM). Panel experts assessed content validity. Internal consistency reliability was determined using Cronbach's alpha. Confirmatory factor analysis based on structural equation modelling was performed to validate the factor structure. The questionnaire was then tested on and completed by 149 healthcare workers from several public health clinics across Malaysia. The Malay-TAM demonstrated good reliability with Cronbach's alphas ranging from 0.823 to 0.912. Factor analysis showed good convergent validity but relatively poor discriminant validity. All five constructs were retained to preserve content validity. The findings suggest that the Malay-TAM can serve as a reliable and valid instrument to measure acceptance to telemedicine. Bibliometric analyses of academic output are critical in assessing a country's scientific performance and have ignited significant interest in recent days. However, no such study has been conducted in the field of dentistry, specifically endodontics, among Malaysia's researchers. Hence, this study aimed to assess the publication output among researchers in Malaysia dedicating to endodontics based on the Scopus database and analyse the characteristics of selected articles as well as the publishing patterns. An electronic search based on the Scopus® database was performed from January 2001 to February 2021. Only English language articles with the first author's affiliation from Malaysia were selected and the following parameters were extracted: title, authors, number of authors, affiliation, journal, year of publication, type of article, source, thematic categories, keywords, and number of citations. Data was analysed using Microsoft Excel software complemented by Pearson's Chi-square and Pearson Correlation tests at 0.05 significance level. There were 119 articles included with the top-cited article received 69 citations. A total of 15 authors have 2 or more articles published, with the International Endodontic Journal published the most. Furthermore, more than half of the articles were published in Q1 and Q2 journals. Over the last two decades, there has been a substantial growth (P<0.05) in the number of articles and cumulative citations, with a significant correlation (P=0.038) between them. Besides, the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Universiti Sains Malaysia published the most articles, with the bulk of them being basic research on endodontic materials. The Rohingyas fled from their home to escape ethnic persecution. Due to their status as refugees they have difficulties in accessing healthcare leading to avoidable mortality and morbidity. Infectious diseases are reported to be among the causes. To ease access to healthcare, IMAM Response and Relief Team (IMARET) provides a free monthly clinic for them. The objective of this study is to determine the proportion of infectious diseases and appropriateness of antimicrobial usage among its pediatrics patients. It was conducted in 2017, through universal sampling. Information retrieved were via interviews and medical records. The majority diagnosis were infectious diseases (57.1%), which include respiratory infections (77.3%), skin (13.6%), gastrointestinal (4.5%), eye and ear infection (both 1%). Albendazole (40.7%) was the most prescribed. Only 7.4% were appropriately prescribed antimicrobials. Age (p = 0.005) and BMI (p = 0.006) were significantly associated with infections. Growing prevalence of mental illnesses and the role they play in the global disease burden is an emerging public health issue. The prevalence of depression and anxiety is on the rise in Malaysia. Low-income urban communities are among the key affected populations with regards to mental health problems. This cross-sectional study was aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of depression, anxiety and stress, and their associated factors among adults in the low-income community of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A total of 248 participants aged 18–60 years old were recruited. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale—21 Items (DASS-21). Chi-squared test was used to examine the association between the variables. Multiple ordinal regression model was introduced to identify the predictors of depression, anxiety and stress. The proportions of participants with depression, anxiety and stress were 24.2% (95% CI: 19.6–30.4), 36.3% (95% CI: 29.9–43.0), and 20.6% (95% CI: 15.4–26.5), respectively. There was a statistically significant association of ethnicity (p = 0.002) and age (p = 0.014) with the severity of depression, ethnicity (p = 0.001) and age (p = 0.024) with the severity of anxiety, and ethnicity (p < 0.001) and marital status (p = 0.006) with the severity of stress. In a multivariable analysis, only non-Malay ethnicity was an independent predictor of the severity of depression [OR = 2.43, 95% CI (1.25, 4.72), p = 0.009], anxiety [OR = 2.55, 95% CI (1.41, 4.62), p = 0.002] and stress [OR = 4.28, 95% CI (2.06, 8.89), p = <0.001]. This study aims to describe the employment status and pattern among survivors of traumatic brain injury after motor vehicle accidents, and to explore the effects of demographic, injury variables and concomitant injuries on the employment status. A retrospective analyses of 370 medical reports written for patients who sustained traumatic brain injury from motor vehicle accidents was conducted. To establish the employment pattern, the pre-injury employment history was compared to the latest employment status documented. Types and severity of concomitant injuries were rated according to Abbreviated Injury Scale criteria. All significant variables were further analyzed using logistic regression to explore predictors of employment. Up to 87% of the patients sustained concomitant injuries, with more than two-thirds (72%) scoring ≤ 2 on the Abbreviated Injury Scale. One hundred and eighty-two patients (49.2%) successfully returned to work. Among those who returned to work, 34% returned to former employment with pre-injury job description. Severity of traumatic brain injury, length of acute hospital stay, ambulation status and cognitive status were found to be significant predictive factors for employment status post traumatic brain injury. Presence of concomitant extremity injuries was found to influence the employment pattern among traumatic brain injury survivors. Aim: Anxiety is prevalent among women with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), which is associated with coping strategies and bio-psychosocial risk factors. This study aims to predict socioeconomic status (SES) and obstetric factors towards anxiety and stress-coping strategy, and to explore the significant differences in levels of anxiety on each coping strategy. Design: It was a cross-sectional survey in the Malaysian context. Methods: Forty women medically diagnosed with HG were recruited and completed Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) to assess generalized anxiety disorder and coping scale inventory using the Brief COPE questionnaire. Results: The employment status of pregnant women diagnosed with HG significantly predicted their anxiety. Household income and education level predicted emotion-focused coping strategies. None of the obstetric factors predicted the coping strategy. A significant difference was found across anxiety levels in problem-focused and dysfunctional coping strategies. The post-hoc test reveals that dysfunctional coping has the highest mean score in the severe anxiety category. Conclusion: It is essential to promote awareness about effective coping strategies for pregnant women who are diagnosed with HG. Greater efforts are needed to increase the duty of care among healthcare providers to propagate holistic and resourceful coping management with the HG that could help potential patients in the future. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of alcohol use among a cohort of population in Sabah. Design: This is a prospective, cohort study involving rural community residents. Setting: Rural community resident at Bingkor, Keningau, Sabah. Participants: 363 individuals aged 13 years old and above. Intervention: Community‐based participatory research to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with alcohol use. Main outcome measures: Measurement of alcohol use using Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and assessment of psychiatric morbidity using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) questionnaires. Results: Most alcohol drinkers aged between 36‐45 years old, followed by 26‐35 years old and 46‐55 years old. Interestingly, there are almost similar female to male ratio. Most were Kadazan‐Dusun ethnic, non‐Muslims, and married. Although only less than a third of the participants received tertiary education, the majority were working. Based on the findings, being a male, non‐Muslim and having an obsessive‐compulsive disorder (OCD) (current) posed a significantly higher risk of alcohol consumption. Conclusion: A worryingly high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption among the locals is reported. People caught using amphetamine-type-stimulants (ATS) in Malaysia can either be incarcerated and subsequently be placed in a community supervision programme or if they can afford the fine, be directly sent for community supervision. We sought to determine if treatment compliance in the community supervision varied between the two groups. Eighty-five ATS users (59 previously incarcerated persons and 26 having only been fined) were recruited from a community supervision programme for this longitudinal study. The sample was largely male and Malay. Respondents were screened for drug use and assessed for six months. We found that 54% of the incarcerated participants had dropped out of the supervision programme as compared to 23% of the fined participants. Also, by the end of the study period, 63% of the incarcerated participants had tested positive for drug use, relative to 30% of the fined participants. Furthermore, incarcerated participants had higher odds of having previously dropped out of a community supervision programme (OR: 4.34; 1.44–13.06; p<.006), as compared to their fined counterparts. ATS users with a history of incarceration had poorer treatment compliance, relative to their compeers who were not incarcerated and placed directly in a community supervision programme. Coping with musculoskeletal pain is associated with severe pain behavior. This study aims to determine the factors associated with coping among Filipino migrant workers in Malaysia with musculoskeletal pain. Ninety Filipino migrant workers were purposively selected from a training school based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Participants were asked to answer the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) to identify body regions with musculoskeletal pain. Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ) - 24 was used to determine coping strategies and control over pain. Pain in shoulders (63.3%) and low back (55.6%) were common in the last 12 months. Participants use diversion (18.4 ± 9.8), cognitive coping (18.1 ± 10.1), and reinterpreting (13.7 ± 8.4) as their coping strategies, with a median control over pain of 3 (some control of pain). A statistically significant association is noted between cognitive coping, diversion, and reinterpreting coping strategies to control over pain (p value <0.05). Participants who utilized diversion and cognitive coping strategies have better control over pain. Catastrophizing is significantly associated with complaints of pain on the elbow, wrist/hand, low back, and hips/ thigh in the past 12 months. Diversion is associated with pain on neck, shoulder, elbow, upper back, hips/thigh, and ankle/feet while catastrophizing is associated for pain in the elbow, wrist/hand, and low back that is present in the last 7 days. Background Prenatal supplementation has been introduced to pregnant women during early pregnancy to prevent complication to both mother and fetus. The complications include anaemia, postpartum haemorrhage, low birth weight and fetal defects. Aim To assess compliance with vitamin and mineral supplementation in pregnant women. Methods A cross-sectional design with simple random sampling was used in this study with 100 respondents who attended the maternal and child clinic in Selangor, Malaysia. Findings The findings showed that 86 respondents (86%) were compliance towards vitamin and mineral supplementation, whereas 35 respondents (35%) were non-compliance mainly due to forgetfulness. The result indicated a significant association between compliance with race (p=0.02), occupation (p<0.01), household income (p=0.02), education (p<0.01), parity (p<0.01) and trimester (p=0.02). Aims: People's knowledge, awareness, and attitude (KAA) about hypertension are the cornerstone of hypertension control and/or prevention. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the level of KAA of hypertensive populations about their disease and compare the level of KAA between rural and urban areas in Selangor, Malaysia. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and six rural areas in Selangor, Malaysia. A valid questionnaire was used to evaluate the level of KAA of the Malaysian hypertensive population. One thousand subjects were recruited by the non-probability convenience sampling method. Results: The mean age of the participants was 48 years old. Most of them (51.3%) had a moderate knowledge, 31.9% expressed fair awareness, and 48.8% showed moderate attitude regarding hypertension. Statistical analyses of the data revealed that the level of knowledge was found to be significantly associated with gender, age, race, education level, and source of information about hypertension (p < 0.05). The level of awareness was found to be significantly associated with race, marital status, and education level (p < 0.05). In addition, the participants' attitude towards hypertension was significantly associated with age, race, marital status, and education level (p < 0.05). There was no significant variation in the level of knowledge and attitude among rural and urban respondents (p > 0.05), whereas there was a statistically significant difference in the level of awareness between participants from urban and rural areas (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Efforts are needed to increase KAA about hypertension through health campaigns in public places and via the media to decrease hypertensive complications and its global epidemic. We conducted an epidemiological study to identify the demographics and pre-operative characteristics of patients undergoing primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in a multi-ethnic Asian population. A retrospective study was performed on 696 patients who registered in our ACL reconstruction registry from January 2013 to August 2016. Important inter-ethnic differences were found. Indian patients were significantly older compared to Malay and Chinese patients. Malay and Indian patients were more likely to be male, overweight, and obese compared to Chinese patients. Soccer was the predominant sport involved, although ethnic predominance in specific sports exists. Novel findings from this study include increased prevalence of concomitant chondral injuries in the Chinese population compared to Malays and Indians, and significantly higher rates of concomitant intra-articular injuries in soccer and basketball compared to netball. Identification of these high-risk subgroups would serve useful in guiding the formulation of prevention strategies within our multi-ethnic community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Community‐Based Rehabilitation (CBR) services under the Malaysian Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development have provided two types of services for disabled children: centre‐based and home‐based care since 1984. A cross‐sectional study was conducted among parents and caregivers with children receiving treatment at CBRs on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, to determine the level of satisfaction with the services provided. Respondents were recruited via multi‐staged sampling, and simple randomisation at CBR level. Respondents self‐administered the Physical Therapy Satisfaction Questionnaire (PTSQ) and provided sociodemographic data. A total of 297 respondents were recruited and all the questionnaires were returned complete, making the response rate 100%. Total satisfaction scores and factors influencing respondents' satisfaction for both groups were analysed. The mean total satisfaction score for centre‐based and home‐based were 84.69 (SD = 10.01) and 75.30 (SD = 12.23; t = 7.160, p ≤.001) respectively. Ninety‐eight per cent of centre‐based and 89% of home‐based respondents were satisfied with the current services. There were significantly mean differences in the satisfaction level of respondents of different states respectively (Kelantan mean 84.92 10.83, Terengganu mean 77.49 11.16 and Pahang mean 77.47 12.93, p ≤.001). Factors associated with satisfaction were education (p =.002), occupation (p = <0.001), monthly income (p =.001) and source of income (p =.001). In conclusion, majority of parents and caregivers were satisfied with current services provided at CBR and satisfaction with services was dependent on CBR centre location and education and financial earning capacity. Background: Workplace violence is the occurrence of any incidents of violence in circumstances related to work. It ranges from simple verbal abuse to a more serious condition such as homicide. Workplace violence affects workers physically, psychologically, and emotionally, as well as their work performance, social, and finance. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of workplace violence among healthcare workers in a health district and its predicting factors. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using proportionate stratified random sampling according to occupation among 481 healthcare workers in a health district in Selangor. This study was conducted using an interview based on a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of a personal data section and a workplace violence section. The data were analysed using the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. Result: The response rate of the questionnaire interview was 91.7%. About three-quarters of the respondents were female. The majority of the respondents were nurses (37.9%). About half of the respondents worked in an outpatient clinic, while 27.4% of them worked in a maternal and child clinic. The prevalence of workplace violence was 24.3%. The significant predictors of workplace violence were working in an outpatient clinic (AOR=6.31, 95% CI = 1.9-20.98), working in a maternal and child health clinic (AOR=5.02, 95% CI = 1.37-18.4), working as an Environmental Health Officer (AOR=3.75, 95% CI = 1.287-10.930), and working during the weekends or public holidays (AOR=3.01, 95% CI = 1.64-5.53). Conclusion: About one in 4 workers experienced workplace violence over the past 6 months in the health district. Background: This study aimed to identify a dietary pattern (DP) characterised mainly by high intakes of free sugar and other nutrients hypothesised to be associated with obesity such as dietary energy density (DED), percentage of energy from total fat and fibre density in adolescents from three southern states of Peninsular Malaysia, and its associations with cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study among 335 adolescents who provided both dietary information assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and biochemical parameters including lipid profile, blood glucose, serum insulin and homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Anthropometric measurements included weight (kg), height (cm) and waist circumference (cm), while body mass index (BMI) in kg/m2 was estimated, respectively. Reduced rank regression (RRR) identified a DP with percentage of energy from sugar and total fat, DED and fibre density intake as response variables. Results: The identified 'high sugar, high fibre, high DED and low fat' DP was characterised by high intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages, fruits, sweets and low intakes of meat and cereal. Adolescents in the highest tertile of the identified DP had about 3.0 (OR = 2.7; 95%CI: 1.3, 5.6) and 2.0 (OR = 1.9; 95%CI: 1.0, 3.5) times higher odds of having dyslipideamia or elevated total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol level, respectively compared to adolescents in the lowest tertile DP after adjusting for sex, school location, maternal education, physical activity, dietary misreporting and BMI z-score. This DP was not significantly associated with overweight and obesity. Conclusions: Higher adherence to a DP characterised mainly by free sugars and DED was associated with greater odds of having dyslipideamia, elevated total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in Malaysian adolescents. Background: A multitude of studies revealed that smoking is a behaviour learned and initiated during adolescence. Therefore, reducing the smoking initiation among adolescents has been recognised as one of the long term measures to reduce smoking-related health problems. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a peer-based intervention in preventing smoking initiation among school-going male adolescents. Materials and Methods: This study use a quasi-experimental study design and involve school-going adolescents from selected secondary schools in the state of Negeri Sembilan. A total of 760 non-smoking adolescents per group will be recruited into the study based on a 50% of difference in the rate of smoking initiation between the control and intervention group. The outcome variable iss incidence rate of smoking initiation. Both intervention and control groups will receive health education materials on smoking, but for the intervention group, a peer-based intervention which also involve students who are elected by their peers, is introduced. Descriptive statistics will be used to illustrate the characteristics of respondents, Chi Square analysis will be perform to analyse differences in the incidence of smoking initiation at the end of the study. Statistical inferences were made using two-sided hypotheses and at alpha level of 0.05. Expected outcome: This study will be able to determine the effectiveness of the peer-based intervention, which can then be expanded and integrated with others interventional programmes in reducing the incidence rate of smoking initiation school-going adolescents in Malaysia. Background: Iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is a public health issue in Sarawak. This study aimed to determine the present status of IDD among first trimester pregnant women in Sarawak after a decade of implementation of USI. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of IDD involved 30 Maternal and Child Health Clinics throughout Sarawak with 750 pregnant women in the selected clinics were randomly selected via systematic sampling. Socio-demographic data, urinary iodine sample, thyroid size examination, and household salt were also collected. Further associations and odds were analysed using Krusskal-Wallis, Chi square and Logistic regression. Result: The prevalence of goiter rate (TGR) was found to be 1.0% (n=10). The median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) for Sarawak was 123.9µg/L (IQR 56.5-192.1µg/L) which indicates an iodine deficiency. Median UIC for both Sri Aman and Mukah had achieved adequacy of iodine intake which were 150.7 (IQR 128.2-235.8) and 170.2 (IQR 119.1-264.7) respectively. Sarawak divisions and ethnicity were found significant association with UIC. Conclusion: USI programme should be continue as has improved IDD in Sarawak despite majority of pregnant women in Sarawak still having iodine insufficiency. Background: Second-hand-smoke (SHS) contributed significantly to the health problem in Malaysia., and it is significantly high in open air eateries. However, no study been carried out to determine the objective measurement of SHS exposure, and, Attitude, perception and acceptance among Malaysian adult on smoke free policy in Malaysia. Thus, the present study proposes to fill the gap of the related issue. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study design will be used to measure nicotine vapour in selected open-air eateries and Survey of customers, workers and owners attitude, perception and their acceptance on smoke-Free policy in the open-air eatery premises. Nicotine vapour will be measured using NIOSH standard method 2551, whereas standard validated questionnaire will be used to measure attitude, perception and acceptance of premises owner, workers, and customers. Descriptive, Chi Square, independent T-Test and Multiple Linear regression will be used for data analysis using SPSS software. Expected Outcome: The findings from the present study are important to provide information on SHS exposure as well as the perception and acceptance of the customers, workers and owners of open-air eateries towards smoke-free policy in open-air eateries. Such information is particularly helpful in providing objective evidence to stakeholders and/or policy-makers on the formulation of suitable policies to address the problem of exposure to second-hand smoke among Malaysian population in public places since public acceptance and attitude are important pre-requisite elements in securing and enforcing effective smoke-free laws. Objective: This study aimed to (a) translate a hearing aid (HA) manual into Malay language and revise the translated manual based on best practice guidelines; (b) compare the effectiveness of the translated and the revised Malay HA manuals in helping individuals to perform HA management tasks. Design: Cross-sectional, randomised, single-blinded study. Study sample: An Oticon-Dynamo HA manual was translated and revised based on best practice guidelines. Ninety participants aged 55 years and above participated in this study. They were randomly assigned into the control group (received translated manual) and the experimental group (received the revised translated manual). The Hearing Aid Management (HAM) test, which was developed in a previous study, was conducted to evaluate participant's ability to perform HA management tasks using the translated and the revised version of Malay HA manual. Results: The revised Malay HA manual had a lower reading grade level relative to the initial translated Malay HA manual. The ability to perform HA management tasks was better in the experimental group (mean = 12.2, SD = 1.15) versus the control group (mean = 8.7, SD = 2.11). Conclusion: Further revision of existing HA manuals based on best practice guidelines is recommended to help individuals better manage their HAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Depression is the most common form of mental disorder among prison inmates. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and socio-demographic determinants of depression among adult male inmates in a local prison in Malaysia. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 460 inmates who were systematically selected. Depression was screened using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression were applied to determine the association between depression and associated variables. Data was analyzed using SPSS software with a p value less than 0.05 was considered significant. The response rate was 90.7% while prevalence of depression was 40.7%. The presence of communicable disease (AOR=2.249, 95%Cl=1.217-4.156) and non-communicable disease (AOR=1.890, 95%Cl=1.132-3.156) identified as sociodemographic determinants of depression. The study suggest a high prevalence of depression among the inmates. Initiative must be given to address and improve the prison health care services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aim. Epidemiology of maxillofacial fractures (MFF) varies between populations. This study investigated the epidemiology of MFF treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Unit, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Methods. A retrospective review of 473 medical records of patients with MFF treated from June 2013 to December 2015 was conducted. Information on demographic characteristics of patients, aetiology of injury, types of MFF, and treatment was obtained. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's chi-squared test, and multiple logistic regression analysis were conducted. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results. Most patients treated for MFF were males (82.2%), aged 30 and below (63.1%), and from Malay ethnic (97.4%). Road traffic accident was the most common cause of MFF (83.1%), with motorcycle accident accounting for most injuries (73.6%). Orbital wall fracture was the most frequent MFF type (51.2%). About half of MFF patients (51.4%) were treated conservatively. Patients aged more than 20 years old were at higher odds of sustaining orbital wall fracture (AOR= 1.76; 95% CI: 1.214-2.558; P= 0.003) but were at lower odds of sustaining mandibular fracture (AOR= 0.47; 95% CI: 0.315-0.695; P= 0.001) than patients who are 20 years old and younger. Helmet use among motorcyclists was significantly associated with the nasal, orbital wall, and maxillary sinus wall fractures (P= 0.006, 0.010, and 0.004, respectively). Conclusion. Motorcycle accident was the most common cause of MFF in Kelantan, Malaysia. Ages of patient and helmet use were associated with the type of MFF sustained. This study provides important information to facilitate the planning of MFF prevention strategies among motorcyclists and emphasizes the importance of using a helmet when riding a motorcycle. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an important gender-based, social, and public health problem that affects women worldwide, including women who are pregnant or have recently given birth. Studies have shown that violence against women often increases during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This study aims to examine lifetime and past-year prevalence of IPV among postpartum women in Malaysia, and to determine the socio-demographic as well as husband's/partner's behavioral factors associated with IPV exposure. This is a nationwide, cross-sectional and clinic-based study involving a total of 5727 women at 6 to 16 weeks postpartum, who attended randomly selected government health clinics between July to November 2016. Face-to-face interviews were conducted by trained female enumerators based on a pre-validated structured questionnaire, using mobile devices as data collection tools. Chi-squared tests and multivariable logistic regressions were used to investigate selected factors associated with IPV exposure. The lifetime and past-year prevalence of any form of IPV among postpartum women were 4.94% (95% CI [3.81,6.39]) and 2.42% (95% CI [1.74,3.35]) respectively, with the highest prevalence being emotional violence, followed by physical and sexual violence. Multivariable analysis showed that husband's/partner's behaviors, such as frequent alcohol use, drug use, fighting habits and controlling behaviour were significantly associated with both lifetime and past-year IPV (all p < 0.001 for past-year IPV). These findings suggest that prevention and intervention strategies for IPV should consider the prevention of substance use and reducing controlling behaviors by husband/partner, as well as raising awareness to build healthy relationships through education. Aims and objectives: To investigate the effectiveness of a structured nursing intervention program on maternal stress and NICU‐related maternal ability after the admission of premature infants to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Background: Mothers of premature infants may face stress having premature infants, and their infants may be admitted to the NICU for a few weeks or months. The mothers' experience of stress would be worse if they have low knowledge and poor NICU‐related maternal ability. Mothers of infants admitted to the NICU require well‐planned interventions to cope with psychological matters arising after an infant hospitalisation. Design: Quasi‐experimental design. Methods: A total of 216 mothers were consecutively assigned to control and intervention groups. Each group consisted of 108 mothers. The mothers in both groups received questionnaire concerning maternal stress and NICU‐related ability during their first visit to NICU (within 48 hr of admission). A structured nursing intervention was implemented for 10 days on mothers in the intervention group. The control group continued to receive existing practice nursing care. Mothers of both groups were again given the questionnaire on maternal stress and NICU‐related ability after 14 days of admission. Results: In the intervention group, the difference between the mean total score of maternal stress and parental role and relationship subscale decreased significantly, compared to the control group (p = 0.04; p = 0.01) respectively. Maternal ability improved significantly in mothers in the intervention group 2 weeks postintervention, p < 0.001. Conclusion: A structured nursing intervention for mothers could significantly reduce maternal stress and promote maternal NICU‐related abilities. Relevance to clinical practice: The results of the study could help neonatal nurses to develop an appropriate nursing intervention for parents with premature infants in the NICU. Aims: To determine the effect mobile messaging apps on coronary artery disease patient knowledge of and adherence to a healthy lifestyle. Background: Due to the increasing incidence of coronary artery disease in recent years, interventions targeting coronary artery disease risk factors are urgent public priorities. The use of mobile technology in healthcare services and medical education is relatively new with promising future prospects. Design: This study used a quasiexperimental design that included pre‐ and posttest for intervention and control groups. Methods: The study was conducted from January–April 2017 with both intervention and control groups, in a teaching hospital in Klang Valley. Convenience sampling was used with inclusive criteria in choosing the 94 patients with coronary artery disease (intervention group: 47 patients; control group: 47 patients). The pretest was conducted as a baseline measurement for both groups before they were given standard care from a hospital. However, only the intervention group was given a daily information update via WhatsApp for 1 month. After 1 month, both groups were assessed with a posttest. Results: The split‐plot ANOVA analysis indicates that there is a significant and positive effect of the intervention on coronary artery disease patients' knowledge on coronary artery disease risk factors [F(1, 92) = 168.15, p < 0.001] with a large effect size (ηp2 = 0.65). The mobile messaging apps also significantly improve the patients' adherence to a healthy lifestyle [F(1, 92) = 83.75, p < 0.001] with a large effect size (ηp2 = 0.48). Conclusion: This study concluded that WhatsApp was an effective health intervention in increasing coronary artery disease patient's knowledge and subsequently increasing their adherence to healthy lifestyles. This study aimed to uncover the influential factors of community participation in a rural poverty alleviation programme in Malaysia. A quantitative approach was used, and data were collected through a self-administered survey questionnaire from 260 respondents of the Iban community in Malaysia. The study considered 22 influential factors (18 as independent variables and 4 as dependent variables) to measure the level of community participation in decision-making, implementation, benefits sharing and evaluation. The study explored how these influential factors interacted with participation in a rural poverty alleviation programme. The results found a diversity of interacting factors within the forms of participation at the implementation level. The article contributes a dynamic and multi-dimensional understanding of how influential factors shape community participation processes. Background: Dengue fever is a continuing public health burden globally, including Malaysia. Dengue fever has also become a burden among students who migrate to dengue endemic countries. Method: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the associated factors of knowledge and attitude on prevention of dengue infection among international postgraduate students in a university in Malaysia. Descriptive and analytic statistics were used to analyze the data collected through structured questionnaire. Chi-Square/Fisher's exact test and binary logistic regression was used to analyze the association and the predictors respectively. Level of significance was set at P less than 0.05. Results: A total of 327 international students participated with 93.4% response rate. Most of the students were male (70.3%), single (51.1%) and Asians (52.3%) with median age of 32 (IQR 10). Most of the respondents showed good knowledge (69.7%) and positive attitude (51.4%) towards prevention of dengue. Predictors of knowledge were being a female (aOR = 2.236, P = 0.007), previous history of dengue infection (aOR = 12.751, P = 0.007), longer duration of stay in Malaysia (aOR = 2.005, P = 0.007) and high influence of mass media (aOR = 3.076, P = <0.001). Predictors of positive attitude were, older age (aOR = 1.718, P = 0.024), higher perceived influence of mass media (aOR = 2.236, P = 0.007) and living in dengue endemic country (aOR = 1.796, P = 0.031). Conclusion: Knowledge and attitude of international students on prevention of dengue fever should be strengthened. ABSTRACT: Background: Coronary heart disease has emerged as a number one killer in Malaysia and globally. Much of the morbidity and mortality in acute coronary syndrome patients is because of patients not recognizing their symptoms which contributes to delay in seeking early treatment. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse‐led health education programme on knowledge, attitude and beliefs of coronary patients towards the responses to acute coronary syndrome and the association with patients' characteristics. Methods: A single‐group quasi‐experimental design took place in a tertiary hospital. A total of 60 coronary patients were recruited to this study. The knowledge, attitude and beliefs towards acute coronary syndrome (ACS) were evaluated at baseline and after 1 month of giving education intervention. Results: Knowledge, attitude and beliefs about ACS increased significantly from baseline to 1 month after intervention. Level of attitude was associated with gender, educational level and employment status. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that an education program conducted by a nurse improved patients' level of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs in response to ACS symptoms at 1 month compared to baseline, but whether they are sustained for a longer period is unclear. Improving the responses towards ACS might reduce decision delay in symptom interpretation and seeking early treatment. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurse‐led interventions have imparted positive outcomes in response to ACS symptoms among coronary patients.
