Growing population and consumption pose unprecedented demands on food production. However, ammonia emissions mainly from food systems increase oceanic nitrogen deposition contributing to eutrophication. Here, we developed a long-term oceanic nitrogen deposition dataset (1970 to 2018) with updated ammonia emissions from food systems, evaluated the impact of ammonia emissions on oceanic nitrogen deposition patterns, and discussed the potential impact of nitrogen fertilizer overuse. Based on the chemical transport modeling approach, oceanic ammonia-related nitrogen deposition increased by 89% globally between 1970 and 2018, and now, it exceeds oxidized nitrogen deposition by over 20% in coastal regions including China Sea, India Coastal, and Northeastern Atlantic Shelves. Approximately 38% of agricultural nitrogen fertilizer was excessive, which corresponds to 15% of global oceanic ammonia-related nitrogen deposition. Policymakers and water quality managers need to pay increasingly more attention to ammonia associated with food production if the goal of reducing coastal nitrogen pollution is to be achieved for Sustainable Development Goals.

Paddy fields in China contributed to one third of the global cropland ammonia (NH 3 ) emission inventory, while rice accounted for half of cereal consumption, necessitating exhaustive considerations of the balance between NH 3 emissions abatement and food demand. The concept of yield-scaled emission intensity (emissions per unit crop production) has the potential to guide sustainable intensification strategies, yet its application to NH 3 emissions remains poorly understood. Here, by constructing novel crop-specific models for single rice production and NH 3 emissions in the Middle and Lower Yangtze River Basin (LYRB) as a case study, the relationships between fertilizer N application and yield-scaled NH 3 were estimated. Contrary to our hypothesis of a tipping point, our results showed that yield-scaled NH 3 curves could not directly identify optimal nitrogen (N) rates. However, the benefit of lower N fertilizer rate on NH 3 abatement consistently outweighed the risk of yield loss. The exponential relationships between yield-scaled NH 3 and N surplus allowed us to estimate the N surplus criterion as 15.6 kg N ha -1 (or 190 kg N ha -1 fertilizer N rate) for the LYRB. Under the N surplus criterion, NH 3 emissions can be reduced by 23-27% without severely impacting rice yield, compared to the N rate required for the highest yield. Moreover, five major controlling factors for yield-scaled NH 3 were estimated by random forest models, ranked in order of importance as N rate, total N, K rate, mean annual precipitation, and soil organic carbon. Among the agricultural practices (irrigation, tillage, and fertilizer management), deep placement was the most effective measure to reduce yield-scaled NH 3, showing 48% reduction potential, followed by proper N splitting frequency (43%). Terrestrial ecosystems in China receive the world's largest amount of reactive nitrogen (N) deposition. Recent controls on nitrogen oxides (NO x  = NO + NO 2 ) emissions in China to tackle air pollution are expected to decrease N deposition, yet the observed N deposition fluxes remain almost stagnant. Here we show that the effectiveness of NO x emission controls for reducing oxidized N (NO y  = NO x  + its oxidation products) deposition is unforeseen in Eastern China, with one-unit reduction in NO x emission leading to only 55‒76% reductions in NO y -N deposition, as opposed to the high effectiveness (around 100%) in both Southern China and the United States. Using an atmospheric chemical transport model, we demonstrate that this unexpected weakened response of N deposition is attributable to the enhanced atmospheric oxidizing capacity by NO x emissions reductions. The study of emissions and depositions of atmospheric reactive nitrogen species (N r s) in a region is important to uncover the sources and sinks of atmospheric N r s in the region. In this study, atmospheric total N r s depositions including both wet-only and dry deposition were monitored simultaneously across major land-use types in a 105 km 2 catchment called Jinjing River Catchment (JRC) in subtropical central China from 2015 to 2016. Based on activity data and emission factors for the main N r s emission sources, ammonia (NH 3 ) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emission inventories for the catchment were also compiled. The estimated total N r s deposition in JRC was 35.9 kg N ha -1 yr -1 , with approximately 49.7 % attributed to reduced compounds (NH x ), and 40.5 % attributed to oxidized (NO y ). The total N r s emission rate in JRC was 80.4 kg N ha -1 yr -1 , with 61.5 and 18.9 kg N ha -1 yr -1 from NH 3 and NO x emissions, respectively. Livestock excretion and fertilization were the two main contributing emission sources for NH 3 , while vehicle sources contributed the bulk of NO x emissions. The net atmospheric budgets of N r s in paddy field, forest, and tea field were +3.7, -36.1, and +23.8 kg N ha -1 yr -1 , respectively. At the catchment scale, the net atmospheric budget of N r s was +47.7 kg N ha -1 yr -1 , with +43.7 kg N ha -1 yr -1 of NH x and +4.0 kg N ha -1 yr -1 of NO y, indicating that the subtropical catchment was net sources of atmospheric N r s. Considering that excessive atmospheric N r emissions and deposition may cause adverse effects on the environment, effects should be conducted to mitigate the N r s emissions from agriculture and transportation, and increasing the area of forest is good for reducing the net positive budget of atmospheric N r s in the subtropical catchments in China., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. China has experienced a dramatic change in atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions over the past four decades. However, it remains unclear how nitrogen (N) deposition has responded to increases and/or decreases in Nr emissions. This study quantitatively assesses temporal and spatial variations in measurements of bulk and calculated dry N deposition in China from 1980 to 2018. A long-term database (1980-2018) shows that bulk N deposition peaked in around 2000, and had declined by 45% by 2016-2018. Recent bulk and dry N deposition (based on monitoring from 2011 to 2018) decreased from 2011 to 2018, with current average values of 19.4 ± 0.8 and 20.6 ± 0.4 kg N ha -1 yr -1 , respectively. Oxidized N deposition, especially dry deposition, decreased after 2010 due to NO x emission controls. In contrast, reduced N deposition was approximately constant, with reductions in bulk NH 4 + -N deposition offset by a continuous increase in dry NH 3 deposition. Elevated NH 3 concentrations were found at nationwide monitoring sites even at urban sites, suggesting a strong influence of both agricultural and non-agricultural sources. The losses of excessive reactive nitrogen (N) from agricultural production pose detrimental impacts on water, air and land. However, N budgets of agroecosystems are still poorly quantified, presenting a barrier to understand the N turnover in agriculture. Agricultural ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization has been recognized as a crucial contribution to the pollution of fine particulate matters over China through reacting with acid gases. Building on these challenges, the first national-scale model analysis was constructed on the N budgets to gain an overall insight into the current status of N flows in Chinese dryland systems towards sustainable N management. Total inputs of soil N in Chinese dryland soils were estimated at 121 kg N ha -1 in 2010, considering all pathways including N manure, fertilizer, atmospheric deposition and litter from crop residues. Atmospheric N deposition accounted for 25% of N fertilizer plus N manure in Chinese dryland soils, suggesting that N deposition could not be ignored when estimating total N inputs to Chinese dryland soils. The highest ratio of NH 3 volatilization to total N outputs was found at 43 kg N ha -1 (∼21%) in Northern China, followed by 41 kg N ha -1 (∼20%) in Sichuan Basin and 25 kg N ha -1 (∼26%) in Northeastern China. The modeling results indicated that, if a 20% decrease in N fertilizer plus N manure was achieved, it would lead to a 24% (7-49%) reduction in NH 3 volatilization. Substantial reductions of NH 3 volatilization would also be achieved by making an improvement in changing management practices (controlled release fertilizer and full irrigation). The results would give an overall insight into N budgets in Chinese dryland soils. Elevated atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has exerted profound influences on ecosystems. Understanding the effects of N deposition on the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) is important in the studies of global carbon cycle. Although many studies have examined the effects of N deposition on SOC turnover using N addition experiments, the effects were reported to be different across studies. Thus, we lack a predictive understanding of how SOC turnover respond to atmospheric N deposition. The inconsistent results could be associated with ecosystem types and N addition rates. This study mainly wants to confirm the argument that the response of SOC turnover to N deposition is related with N input rates. We conducted a field experiment with multiple N addition levels (0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 g N m -2 ·yr -1 ) in Inner Mongolia Grassland, China. To better reveal the responses of SOC turnover to N enrichment, this study measured the soil 14 C contents, because it can indicate SOC turnover directly. Compared with the control treatment (0 g N m -2 ·yr -1 ), N addition inhibits SOC turnover at the addition rate of 3 g N m -2 ·yr -1 , whereas SOC turnover is not affected when N addition rate was 6, 12, and 24 g N m -2 ·yr -1 . Our results suggest that N input rates affect the responses of SOC turnover to N enrichment. Thus, this study can confirm the argument mentioned above. Based on this study, it should be considered in the climate prediction model that varied atmospheric N deposition levels across regions may have different impacts on local SOC turnover. In addition, we also carried out a soil incubation to compare between the results obtained in incubation and that in 14 C measurements. Two results are found to be inconsistent with each other. The Yangtze River basin is one of the world's hotspots for nitrogen (N) deposition and likely plays an important role in China's riverine N output. Here we constructed a basin-scale total dissolved inorganic N (DIN) deposition (bulk plus dry) pattern based on published data at 100 observational sites between 2000 and 2014, and assessed the relative contributions of different reactive N (N r ) emission sectors to total DIN deposition using the GEOS-Chem model. Our results show a significant spatial variation in total DIN deposition across the Yangtze River basin (33.2 kg N ha -1 yr -1 on average), with the highest fluxes occurring mainly in the central basin (e.g., Sichuan, Hubei and Hunan provinces, and Chongqing municipality). This indicates that controlling N deposition should build on mitigation strategies according to local conditions, namely, implementation of stricter control of N r emissions in N deposition hotspots but moderate control in the areas with low N deposition levels. Total DIN deposition in approximately 82% of the basin area exceeded the critical load of N deposition for semi-natural ecosystems along the basin. On the basin scale, the dominant source of DIN deposition is fertilizer use (40%) relative to livestock (11%), industry (13%), power plant (9%), transportation (9%), and others (18%, which is the sum of contributions from human waste, residential activities, soil, lighting and biomass burning), suggesting that reducing NH 3 emissions from improper fertilizer (including chemical and organic fertilizer) application should be a priority in curbing N deposition. This, together with distinct spatial variations in emission sector contributions to total DIN deposition also suggest that, in addition to fertilizer, major emission sectors in different regions of the basin should be considered when developing synergistic control measures., (Copyright © 2017. China is regarded as one of the nitrogen deposition hotspots in the world. Measurements to-date have focused mainly on the North China Plain, ignoring the fact that atmospheric chemical and physical properties vary across the country and that there may be other hotspots regions that should be investigated. For this reason we have conducted a six year study, measuring the bulk deposition of reduced (NH 4 -N), oxidized (NO 3 -N), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) at three contrasting sites in the Sichuan province, southwest China. The study sites were a high altitude forest in the Gongga Mountains (GG), an agriculture dominated region in Yanting (YT) and an urban site in the mega city Chengdu (CD). The annual average bulk deposition fluxes of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) were 7.4, 23.1 and 36.6 kg N ha -1 yr -1 at GG, YT and CD sites, respectively, during the study period 2008 to 2013. The contributions of NH 4 -N, NO 3 -N and DON to the TDN were in the range of 48.4-57.8%, 28.8-43.7%, and 8.0-15.6%, respectively. DON bulk deposition was mainly dominated by agricultural activities. TDN bulk deposition fluxes showed increasing trends at the agricultural and urban sites from 2008 to 2013, but there was little change at the remote forest (GG) site. While reduced N dominated bulk N deposition at all the three sites, its contribution showed a decreasing trend, suggesting a gradual increase in the importance of oxidized N. These results reveal the value of long term monitoring in detecting changes in the atmospheric chemical composition of this rapidly changing region, and their inclusion in the policy debate regarding which sources should be controlled in order to reduce the long term impacts of N deposition, especially for southwest China, where there are few measurements of N deposition., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Overuse of urea, low nitrogen (N) utilization, and large N losses are common in maize production in North China Plain (NCP). To solve these problems, we conducted two field experiments at Shangzhuang and Quzhou in NCP to test the ability of a newly developed urease inhibitor product Limus ® to decrease NH 3 volatilization from urea applied to maize. Grain yield, apparent N recovery efficiency (RE N ) and N balance when using urea applied with or without Limus were also measured over two maize growing seasons. Cumulative NH 3 loss in the two weeks following urea application without Limus ranged from 9-108 kg N ha -1 , while Limus addition significantly decreased NH 3 loss by a mean of 84%. Urea with Limus did not significantly increase maize yields (P < 0.05) compared with urea alone. However, a significant 11-17% improvement in RE N with Limus was observed at QZ. The use of urea-N plus Limus would permit a reduction in N applications of 55-60% compared to farmers' practice and/or further 20% N saving compared with optimized urea-N rate (150 kg N ha -1 , based on N requirement by target yield of 7.5 t ha -1 ), and would achieve the same maize yields but with significantly decreased NH 3 loss and increased N utilization.

Few systematic studies have been carried out on integrated N balance in extremely arid oasis agricultural areas. A two-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the N input and output balances under long-term fertilization conditions. Five treatments were chosen, namely CK (no fertilizer), NPK, NPKS (10% straw return N and 90% chemical N), NPKM (one third urea-N, two thirds sheep manure) and NPKM+ (1.5 times NPKM). The results show an abundance of dry and wet N deposition (33 kg N ha-1 yr-1) in this area. All treatments (excluding CK) showed no significant difference in wheat production (P>0.05). NPKM gave higher cotton yields (P<0.05). In both crops, NPKM and NPKS treatments had a relatively higher N harvest index (NHI). 15N-labeled results reveal that the fertilizer N in all N treatments leached to<1 m depth and a high proportion of fertilizer-N remained in the top 60 cm of the soil profile. The NPKM+ treatment had the highest residual soil mineral N (Nmin, 558 kg Nd ha-1), and NPKM and NPKS treatments had relatively low soil Nmin values (275 and 293 kg N ha-1, respectively). Most of the treatments exhibited very high apparent N losses, especially the NPKM+ treatment (369kg N ha-1). Our arid research area had a strikingly high N loss compared to less arid agricultural areas. It remains unclear how nitrogen (N) deposition affects soil methane (CH4) uptake in semiarid and arid zones. An in situ field experiment was conducted from 2010 to 2014 to systematically study the effect of various N application rates (0, 10, 30, and 90 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1)) on CH4 flux in alpine grassland in the Tianshan Mountains. No significant influence of N addition on CH4 uptake was found. Initially the CH4 uptake rate increased with increasing N application rate by up to 11.5% in 2011 and then there was gradual inhibition by 2014. However, the between-year variability in CH4 uptake was very highly significant with average uptake ranging from 52.9 to 106.6 μg C m(-2) h(-1) and the rate depended largely on seasonal variability in precipitation and temperature. CH4 uptake was positively correlated with soil temperature, air temperature and to a lesser extent with precipitation, and was negatively correlated with soil moisture and NO3(-)-N content. The results indicate that between-year variability in CH4 uptake was impacted by precipitation and temperature and was not sensitive to elevated N deposition in alpine grassland.

Due to the rapid development of industrialization and a substantial economy, China has become one of the global hotspots of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) deposition following Europe and the USA. Here, we developed a dataset with full coverage of N and S deposition from 2005 to 2020, with multiple statistical models that combine ground-level observations, chemistry transport simulations, satellite-derived vertical columns, and meteorological and geographic variables. Based on the newly developed random forest method, the multi-year averages of dry deposition of oxidized nitrogen (OXN), reduced nitrogen (RDN), and S in China were estimated at 10.4, 14.4, and 16.7 kg N/S ha -1 yr -1 , and the analogous numbers for total deposition were respectively 15.2, 20.2, and 25.9 kg N/S ha -1 yr -1 when wet deposition estimated previously with a generalized additive model (GAM) was included. The dry to wet deposition ratio (Rdry/wet) of N stabilized in earlier years and then gradually increased especially for RDN, while that of S declined for over 10 years and then slightly increased. The RDN to OXN deposition ratio (RRDN/OXN) was estimated to be larger than 1 for the whole research period and clearly larger than that of the USA and Europe, with a continuous decline from 2005 to 2011 and a more prominent rebound afterwards. Compared with the USA and Europe, a more prominent lagging response of OXN and S deposition to precursor emission abatement was found in China. The OXN dry deposition presented a descending gradient from east to west, while the S dry deposition a descending gradient from north to south. After 2012, the OXN and S deposition in eastern China declined faster than the west, attributable to stricter emission controls. Positive correlation was found between regional deposition and emissions, while smaller deposition to emission ratios (D/E) existed in developed eastern China, attributed to more intensive human activities and thereby anthropogenic emissions. Aims Litter is frequently buried in the soil in alpine grasslands due to grassland degradation, serious rodent infestation and frequent strong winds. However, the effects of various litter positions on litter decomposition rates and nutrient dynamics under nitrogen (N) enrichment in such areas remain unknown. Methods A field experiment was performed in the alpine grasslands of northwest China to investigate the influence of litter position (surface, buried in the soil and standing) and N enrichment on litter decomposition, using data from two dominant grass species (Festuca ovina and Leymus tianschanicus) in control and N-enriched plots. Important Findings Litter decomposition rates were much faster in buried litter and slower in standing litter than in surface litter. N enrichment significantly affected litter quality and then influenced decomposition. But no significant differences in litter mass remaining were observed between control and N-enriched soil burial. These results indicated that N enrichment significantly affected litter decomposition by changes in litter quality. In addition, all litter exhibited net carbon (C) and phosphorus (P) release regardless of treatments. Litter exhibited net N accumulation for litter from the control plots but showed N release for litter from N enrichment plots. These suggested that litter decomposition can be limited by N and N enrichment influenced N cycling of litter. Current study presented direct evidence that soil buried litter exhibited faster mass loss and C release, and that soil burial can be a candidate explanation why litter decomposes faster than expected in dryland. Soil respiration (Rs/ is the most important source of carbon dioxide emissions from soil to atmosphere. However, it is unclear what the interactive response of Rs would be to environmental changes such as elevated precipitation, nitrogen (N) deposition and warming, especially in unique temperate desert ecosystems. To investigate this an in situ field experiment was conducted in the Gurbantunggut Desert, northwest China, from September 2014 to October 2016. The results showed that precipitation and N deposition significantly increased Rs, but warming decreased Rs, except in extreme precipitation events, which was mainly through its impact on the variation of soil moisture at 5 cm depth. In addition, the interactive response of Rs to combinations of the factors was much less than that of any single-factor and the main response was a positive effect, except for the response from the interaction of increased precipitation and high N deposition (60 kgNha-1 yr-1/. Although Rs was found to show a unimodal change pattern with the variation of soil moisture, soil temperature and soil NHC 4 -N content and it was significantly positively correlated to soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pH, a structural equation model found that soil temperature was the most important controlling factor. Those results indicated that Rs was mainly interactively controlled by the soil multi-environmental factors and soil nutrients and was very sensitive to elevated precipitation, N deposition and warming. However, the interactions of multiple factors largely reduced between-year variation of Rs more than any single-factor, suggesting that the carbon cycle in temperate deserts could be profoundly influenced by positive carbon-climate feedback. Reactive nitrogen (Nr) plays a key role in the atmospheric environment and its deposition has induced large negative impacts on ecosystem health and services. Five-year continuous in-situ monitoring of N deposition, including wet (total nitrogen ( W TN), total dissolved nitrogen ( W TDN), dissolved organic nitrogen ( W DON), ammonium nitrogen ( W AN) and nitrate nitrogen ( W NN)) and dry ( D NH 3 , D HNO 3 , D pNH 4 + , D pNO 3 − and D NO 2 ) deposition, had been conducted since August 2008 to December 2013 (wet) and May 2011 to December 2013 (dry) in Yan-ting, China, a typical agricultural area in the central Sichuan Basin. Mean annual total N deposition from 2011 to 2013 was 30.8 kg N ha −1 yr −1 , and speculated that of 2009 and 2010 was averaged 28.2 kg N ha −1 yr −1 , respectively. Wet and dry N deposition accounted for 76.3% and 23.7% of annual N deposition, respectively. Reduced N ( W AN, D NH 3 and D pNH 4 + ) was 1.7 times of oxidized N ( W NN, D HNO 3 , D NO 2 and D pNO 3 − ) which accounted for 50.9% and 30.3% of TN, respectively. Maximum loadings of all N forms of wet deposition, gaseous NH 3 , HNO 3 and particulate NH 4 + in dry deposition occurred in summer and minimum loadings in winter. Whether monthly, seasonal or annual averaged, dissolved N accounted for more than 70% of the total. N deposition in the central Sichuan Basin increased during the sampling period, especially that of ammonium compounds, and has become a serious threat to local aquatic ecosystems, the surrounding forest and other natural or semi-natural ecosystems in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important technology for the treatment of livestock and poultry manure. The optimal experimental conditions were studied, with deer manure as a fermentation material and mushroom residue as an inoculum. At the same time, methane production was increased by adding zeolite and changing the magnetic field conditions. The results showed that a 6% solid content was the best condition for producing methane. The optimal conditions for methane production were obtained by adding 35 g of mushroom residue to 80 g of deer manure at 35 °C. The addition of organic wastewater (OW) improved methane production. The result of improving the methane production factor showed that adding zeolite during the reaction process could increase the methane production rate. When the amount of zeolite was over 8% total solids (TSes), methane production could improve, but the rate decreased. Setting a different magnetic field strength in the AD environment showed that when the distance between the magnetic field and the reactor was 50 mm and the magnetic field strength was 10–50 mT, the methane production increment and the content of methane in the mixed gases increased. Abstract While the ongoing increases in the deposition of atmospheric nitrogen (N) in China have attracted ever more attention, to date there has been little research in N deposition in inland aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we quantified the bulk and dry atmospheric N deposition around the Dongting Lake, which is connected to the Yangtze River and is the second largest freshwater lake in China. Bulk N deposition averaged 48.0 kg N ha−1 yr−1, of which ammonium (NH 4 N), nitrate (NO 3 N), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) accounted for 41.6%, 35.1%, and 23.3%, respectively. Dry N deposition averaged 27.0 kg N ha−1 yr−1, and was dominated by NH 3. Bulk N deposition was higher in spring and summer than in autumn and winter at the sites around the lake because of the high precipitation. NH 3 deposition was the highest in spring and summer due to fertilization, and NO x deposition was the highest in winter because of the combustion of coal for domestic heating. The concentrations of NH 3 significantly decreased with the concentration of NH 4 N, indicating below-cloud scavenging and local sources. The concentrations of NO x and NO 3 N were not correlated, indicating long-distance transfer of NO x. Bulk N deposition in our study was generally twice that reported in other studies, even when only inorganic N species in bulk deposition were considered. Total N deposition averaged 75.0 kg N ha−1 yr−1, which was much higher than that reported in other studies. Both N deposited directly into the lake and N deposited across the lake basin that was subsequently transported to the lake in runoff could enrich the N concentration of the lake water and increase the gross primary productivity (GPP). Our results highlighted the importance of integrated management that includes both aquatic and atmospheric systems at either the lake basin scale or regional scale, rather than at the individual lake-scale. Quantifying the similarities and differences in atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition between different ecosystems is important to develop effective measures to reduce air pollution and maintain biodiversity. Here we show that the constitution of N deposition differed significantly between a grassland and a desert ecosystem in Northwestern China. Flux of bulk (wet plus part of dry deposition) and dry (gaseous NH 3 and NO 2) deposition were continuously monitored from 2018 to 2020. The grassland and desert sites had similar amount of total N deposition, being 7.29 and 6.33 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. However, N deposition at the grassland was dominated by the bulk deposition (4.44 kg N ha−1 yr−1, 61% of the total N deposition), whereas that at the desert was dominated by dry deposition (4.20 kg N ha−1 yr−1, 66% of total deposition). The desert had greater ambient concentrations of NH 3 (3.66 μg N m−3) and NO 2 (1.52 μg N m−3) than the grassland (2.73 μg NH 3 –N m−3 and 0.72 μg NO 2 –N m−3). The amount of reduced N deposition (NH 4 + and NH 3) was around 3 times of that of oxidized N deposition (NO 3 − and NO 2) in both ecosystems. The N deposition rates in both ecosystems have exceeded the critical load for the fragile ecosystems (5–10 kg N ha−1 yr−1), highlighting the importance of reducing N emission sources that are related with anthropogenic disturbance. Abstract Very few comparative studies on atmospheric dry and wet nitrogen (N) deposition have been conducted in agro-pastoral catchment areas. In an effort to fill this knowledge gap, three interconnected land use types (cropland, mountain pasture, and plain pasture) with six sampling sites (Chinese cropland (CC), Chinese mountain pasture (CM), Chinese plain pasture (CP) Mongolia cropland (MC), Mongolia mountain pasture (MM) and Mongolia plain pasture (MP)) were selected in the transboundary regions of northwest China and western Mongolia. During 16 months from May 2014 to September 2015 atmospheric and precipitation samples were collected to assess levels of nitrogen deposition. Cropland had the highest NO 3 −N (1.0 mg N L−1 in China and 1.2 mg N L−1 in Mongolia) and NH 4 +-N concentrations (1.6 mg N L−1 in China and 2.0 mg N L−1 in Mongolia) in our six sampling sites. The CC experienced the highest wet deposition (5.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1), followed by MM pasture (3.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1) while wet deposition in other sites ranged from 2.1 to 2.8 kg N ha−1 yr−1. The ambient concentrations of NH 3 , NO 2 and dry N deposition were significant higher in cropland than being other land use with 3.0, 3.8 and 1.2 μg N m−3 respectively in China and 2.2, 2.8 and 0.6 μg N m−3 respectively in Mongolia. The highest total N deposition was at CC (14.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and MC (9.4 kg N ha−1 yr−1), followed by the mountain pasture (5.8–6.8 kg N ha−1 yr−1), and the plains pasture (5.6–5.7 kg N ha−1 yr−1). Overall, agro-pastoral catchments areas had relatively low total N deposition compared to other studies, and cropland had the highest wet and dry N deposition than mountain and plain pastures, and dry N deposition absolutely dominated the percentage (64–70% in cropland and 53–64% in pasture areas) of total atmospheric N deposition. Comparing the total N deposition in China and Mongolia, we found the CC had 54% higher value than in MC while the reverse was true for mountain pastures Mongolia received 17% more N. China has the largest reactive nitrogen deposition worldwide. Understanding the change of nitrogen deposition and its socioeconomic drivers in China is crucial for the function and sustainability of regional and global ecosystems. Here we presented satellite-derived nitrogen deposition constrained with the national ground-based measurements over China. We found that oxidized nitrogen deposition peaked at 7.0 kg N ha−1 in 2012, then decreased to 6.2 kg N ha−1 in 2017. In contrast, reduced nitrogen deposition increased continuously, and reached 12.6 kg N ha−1 in 2017. The Chinese Clean Air Act is responsible for the reduction of oxidized nitrogen emissions, while there is no current effective control policy for ammonia emissions in place resulting in reduced nitrogen deposition reaching levels of approximately twice that of oxidized nitrogen in 2017. The ratio of reduced to oxidized nitrogen deposition decreased from 1.30 in 2008 to 1.08 in 2011, while this ratio began to increase from 1.08 in 2011 to 1.56 in 2017. This suggests reduced nitrogen deposition would become more important in the air quality and their ecological consequences in the future. The total nitrogen deposition in China was about 3–4 times that in the US and Europe. The policy of controlling nitrogen pollution is urgent, especially for reducing ammonia emissions, while ensuring the sustainable production of agriculture and maintaining food security. • Up to 93.45% of total nitrogen transformed into ammonium by hydrothermal process. • Activated hydrochar was synthesized to capture ammonium nitrogen. • 10.14% of total nitrogen was recovered after solubilization, capture, and available. • Nitrogen sorption by activated hydrochar was assessed by FTIR, SEM and BET. Nitrogen recovery from bio-based digestate has attracted considerable interests recently, but has been limited by the indirect capture of organic or insoluble nitrogen and the lower sorption ability of hydrochar. To mitigate these challenges, we used a hydrothermal pretreatment to promote the conversion of insoluble or organic nitrogen. Activated hydrochar was synthesized by using potassium hydroxide to enhance its sorption capacity, and the hydrochar was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface-area analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. An optimal efficiency was achieved at 210 °C, with 93.45% total nitrogen solubilization into ammonium. The sorption data of ammonium on the activated hydrochar fitted the pseudo second order kinetics and Langmuir model well. This reaction was dominated by chemisorption, which referring to the formation of bonds between (oxygen-containing) functional groups and ammonium. The maximum ammonium adsorption on the activated hydrochar at 260 °C (260AH) was 108.57 mg g−1. The ammonium sorption was endothermic, spontaneous and associated with a disorder increase on the solid-liquid interface. Once saturated, the ammonium was released continually from activated hydrochar and is anticipated to show an optimal performance in an alkaline environment. The amount of ammonium that was released from the saturated activated hydrochar at 260 °C after five extractions was 13.09 mg g−1. The nitrogen mass-balance calculations show that 10.14% total nitrogen was recovered after nitrogen solubilization, capture, and release.
