Intimate partner violence (IPV) can involve patterns of physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Women typically experience physical IPV in combination with emotional IPV, while emotional IPV is often experienced in the absence of other types of IPV. There is very little known about women's experiences of these different types of IPV over time. The primary aim of this paper is to describe patterns in women's individual experiences of physical and/or emotional IPV across the first 10 years of motherhood. Data were drawn from a prospective pregnancy cohort of 1507 first-time mothers in Melbourne, Australia. Emotional, physical, and combined physical and emotional IPV were reported in the first, fourth and tenth year of motherhood using the Composite Abuse Scale. The overall prevalence of each type of IPV remained consistent across the three time-points, with emotional IPV alone being the most prevalent. There was substantial variability in women's experiences of IPV over time and there was no common progression from one type of IPV to another. Women were more likely to report IPV at more than one time-point if they experienced combined physical and emotional IPV, while for women who reported emotional or physical IPV alone this was more likely to be at a single time-point. A number of socio-demographic characteristics in early pregnancy were associated with a higher risk of reporting IPV at all three time-points, including being unemployed (RRR = 3.6; 95% CI: 2.1, 6.2) and being aged 18–24 years (RRR = 3.1; 95% CI: 1.8, 5.4). Knowledge of the variability and persistence of IPV in the first 10 years of motherhood, and factors associated with these experiences, can help tailor effective health and social service responses. This paper investigates mothers' views regarding the purpose of shared reading with their two-year-old children, confidence in using printed and electronic texts, and selfreported practice, framed around a focus on mothers' motivation to engage in shared reading with their children. Research into adult--child shared reading experiences has traditionally focused on early reading behaviours and talk patterns captured in video data, reporting on the literacy or cognitive benefits of these experiences as viewed by researchers. Parent contributions have typically been sought to provide background information such as parent education, frequency of home reading and socio-economic factors. There is limited research that invites parents' voices. Findings from this study have been drawn from quantitative and qualitative data, collected from questionnaires and individual interviews with 12 reading-proficient mothers of two-year-old children in Victoria, Australia. Findings show that mothers acknowledged the educational affordances of shared reading, and the love of reading that the practice invites. Self-reported practices and confidence levels showed a strong preference for using printed picture storybooks as part of a bedtime routine, and that access to electronic texts does not necessarily equate to the same guided engagement with electronic texts as with printed texts. Drawing on data from a prospective pregnancy cohort (N = 1,507), this study examines the relationship between exposure to physical and emotional intimate partner violence (IPV) across the first 10 years of motherhood and women's mental and physical health. A measure of IPV (Composite Abuse Scale) was included at 1, 4, and 10 years postpartum. Past year and prior experiences of IPV were associated with mental and physical health issues at 10 years, both for mothers who had experienced combined IPV and emotional IPV alone. Introduction: Family violence (FV) is one of the most urgent health issues of our generation. While nurses play a vital role in identifying and supporting victim/survivors of violence, little is known about nursing readiness to respond across clinical areas. Objective: This study aimed to compare and contrast the knowledge, confidence, clinical skills, and perceived barriers of nurses across three clinical areas of a tertiary trauma hospital in Melbourne, Australia, in responding to FV. Method: A prospective, mixed methods design was used. The nursing staff at a large trauma hospital were approached to participate. Participants completed a brief online survey to quantify clinician-reported knowledge, clinical skills, and barriers to managing FV. Results: Two hundred and forty-two nursing staff electronically completed a brief survey to capture self-reported confidence, knowledge, clinical skills, and barriers to working effectively in the area. The descriptive analysis reflected service-wide deficits in knowledge, confidence, and self-reported clinical skills, irrespective of the work area. Deficits were identified on a background of limited structured training for FV among this cohort. Significantly higher rates of FV confidence and knowledge were identified among emergency department nurses relative to acute and subacute clinical counterparts. Conclusion: Nurse respondents overall reported low rates of confidence, knowledge, and clinical skills in responding to disclosures of FV. Introduction: This study investigated whether listening and communication skills are predictive of occupational therapy students' resilience. Method: 135 third- and fourth-year undergraduate occupational therapy students (74% response rate) completed the Active-Empathetic Listening Scale, Listening Styles Profile – Revised, Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale, Resilience at University and Resilience Scale for Adults instruments. Linear regressions were completed with the Resilience at University and Resilience Scale for Adults subscales as the dependent variables and the Active-Empathetic Listening Scale, Listening Styles Profile – Revised and Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale subscales as the independent variables. Results: Regression analysis identified significant predictors of students' resilience. The Active-Empathetic Listening Scale: Sensing Listening accounted for 5% (p =.009) and 4.3% (p =.011) of the unique variance of Resilience at University: Find Your Calling and Living Authentically. Listening Styles Profile – Revised: Analytical Listening accounted for 4.4% (p =.022) and 2.7% (p =.038) of the unique variance of Resilience at University: Managing Stress and Maintaining Perspective. Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale: Self-Disclosure accounted for 6.7% (p =.003), 3.6% (p =.035) and 3.4% (p =.047) of the unique variance of Resilience Scale for Adults: Social Resources, Resilience at University: Maintaining Perspective and Resilience Scale for Adults: Planned Future. Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale: Social Relaxation accounted for 8.5% (p =.001) of the unique variance of Resilience Scale for Adults: Social Competence. Conclusion: Components of listening and interpersonal communication were found to be significant predictors of resilience in occupational therapy students. The objective was to explore the efficacy of a dual diagnosis resource—the Reasons For Use Package (RFUP)—to build staff capacity to work with service users and explore service user experiences. A two-state case comparison evaluation was conducted employing a mixed methods action research design, utilizing staff and service user surveys combined with focus groups involving staff trained and mentored in use of the RFUP. Results were that both staff and service users responded positively to the RFUP. Staff self-reported improvements in knowledge and confidence, and service users reported the RFUP assisted them with reflecting on interactions between their mental health and substance use; this assisted them with goal planning and improved their working relationship with staff. Implications were that training and mentoring in the RFUP can contribute to building staff knowledge and confidence in dual diagnosis interventions in mental health community services, and benefit service users. Background: Patients receiving radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer can have complex medication requirements related to the management of side-effects and impaired swallowing ability. This study surveyed patients and clinicians to identify service gaps and unmet medication management needs. Methods: Patient and clinician surveys were developed by a multidisciplinary team based on previously validated questionnaires. The patient survey focused on medication use and adherence. The clinician survey was based around a clinical case study and focused on identifying service gaps and practice variations. This survey was disseminated to radiation oncologists, pharmacists and nurses involved with the care of head and neck or lung cancer patients in Victoria. Results: A total of 93 surveys were completed including 53 patient surveys and 40 clinician surveys. Radiotherapy patients reported high medication usage with up to 53% taking five or more medications daily. When asked the same set of questions relating to medication education requirements, patients receiving polypharmacy reported greater needs (72%) than recognised by the surveyed multidisciplinary clinician group (58%). They also reported a non-adherence rate of 46%. In addition, further disparities were identified in clinician practices and their approach to clinical situations which may result in conflicting advice and confusion for patients. Conclusion: While recognising deficiencies relating to the provision of medication information, oncologists, nurses and pharmacists underestimated patient needs for medication information, education and follow-up. Findings support the rationale for integration of pharmacy services within the radiotherapy clinics to support patient care and bridge service gaps relating to medication management. This study aimed to assess the digital literacy levels and attitudes towards information systems of staff in a health service that will be implementing an electronic health record so that barriers towards implementation could be addressed. A survey measuring staff confidence levels and their attitudes towards information systems was developed. Data were collected over a five-week period, with data analysed using frequency analysis and a chi-square analysis. There were 407 respondents to the survey. The majority (70-80%) of which reported high digital literacy levels, expressing confidence in using technology. Respondents also reported positive attitudes towards information systems. However, one-fifth reported anxiety using information systems. Given poor staff engagement with information systems adversely affects the safety and quality of patient care, health services should provide targeted education and training to address staff with low digital literacy levels and/or confidence with using information systems prior to implementation of an electronic health record system. Purpose: Older Italian migrants in Australia are a vulnerable group, with high rates of type 2 diabetes and low levels of English language proficiency. The project explored the experience of living with diabetes and factors that facilitated or inhibited access to diabetes services. Method: Focus groups were conducted in Italian with 13 participants with type 2 diabetes, aged 68 to 85 years. Results: Findings indicate five main themes, including (a) the value of health, (b) the impact of diabetes, (c) making changes, (d) managing diabetes, and (e) access to information and services. Conclusion: The social context of food, presented the greatest impediment to successful diabetes self-management for this group of older Italian migrants. Participants identified a need for greater community engagement and education. Implications for Practice: A need for greater access to interpreters and information in Italian was identified. Introduction This study investigated whether occupational therapy students’ emotional intelligence and personality traits are predictive of their teamwork skills. Method 114 second and third year undergraduate occupational therapy students (86.6% response rate) completed the Genos Emotional Intelligence Inventory, the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, and the Team Skills Scale. Linear regressions were completed with the Team Skills Scale domains being the dependent variables and the Genos Emotional Intelligence Inventory and Ten-Item Personality Inventory factors being the independent variables. Results Regression analysis results revealed that the Genos Emotional Intelligence Inventory subscales of emotional reasoning and emotional management of others were significant predictors of students’ teamwork skills. Emotional reasoning accounted for 8.3% of the unique variance of the team skills variable (p = .001) and emotional management of others contributed 2.4% of the unique variance (p = .05). The personality traits of extraversion and emotional stability were also found to be significant predictors of students’ teamwork skills, accounting for 7.6% (p = .002) and 3.6% (p = .033) respectively of unique variance of the team skills variable. Conclusion Components of occupational therapy students’ emotional intelligence and specific personality traits were found to be significant predictors of their team skills. Purpose: There is a lack of clarity regarding nursing roles and strategies in providing culturally meaningful end-of-life care to elderly immigrants admitted to Australian hospitals. This article redresses this ambiguity. Method: A qualitative exploratory descriptive approach was used. Data were obtained by conducting in-depth interviews with a purposeful sample of 22 registered nurses, recruited from four health services. Interview transcripts were analyzed using content and thematic analysis strategies. Results: Despite feeling underprepared for their role, participants fostered culturally meaningful care by “doing the ground work,” “facilitating families,” “fostering trust,” and “allaying fear.” Discussion and Conclusion: The Australian nursing profession has a significant role to play in leading policy, education, practice, and consumer engagement initiatives aimed at ensuring a culturally responsive approach to end-of-life care for Australia’s aging immigrant population. This study used Rasch analysis to examine the psychometric validity of the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised to assess beliefs about diabetes in 470 participants with Type 2 diabetes and 71 participants with Type I diabetes. All Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised scales had psychometric issues, which included poorly utilised response categories, poor scale precision and multidimensionality. Following reengineering, only four of the eight scales (Consequences, Illness coherence, Timeline cyclical and Emotional representations) were psychometrically adequate according to the Rasch model. The diabetes-specific version of the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised provides suboptimal assessment of beliefs held by patients with diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which examines the relationship between patient satisfaction with personal injury compensation systems and attributions for responsibility for motor vehicle accidents. A survey data from people compensated under a no-fault personal injury compensation system was analyzed. Patient satisfaction was examined across five domains including resolves patient's issues, treats patient as an individual, and overall satisfaction. The results are outlined.

This study examined longitudinal relationships between depressive symptoms and use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit substances among adolescents, addressing methodological limitations and potential confounding in the extant literature. The sample comprised adolescents who were surveyed in Grades 6 (n = 916), 9 (n = 804), and 11 (n = 791). Cross-lagged path analyses were used to examine bi-directional relationships between substance use and depressive symptoms. Early adolescent depressive symptoms predicted mid-adolescent cigarette, alcohol, and illicit substance use (the latter among females only). Mid-adolescent depressive symptoms predicted late adolescent illicit substance use (females only). There were no statistically significant pathways from substance use to later depressive symptoms. However, these relationships were reduced to non-significance with the addition of covariates associated with the family environment, school, and individual. The findings suggest that the association between adolescent depressive symptoms and later substance use can be explained by common risk factors that produce vulnerability to both depression and substance use.
