An accurate discrimination on moisture status of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) bushings is crucial for the maintenance and replacement schedule of bushings. Based on frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) measurement and Dissado–Hill (DH) relaxation model, this article proposes a hybrid approach of hidden Markov model and gray wolf optimization (GWO-HMM) for MS estimation of bushings subjected to the ununiform moisture distribution and dynamic time-series modeling. First, simulation models of moisture diffusion and FDS of the OIP bushing were constructed using finite element modeling approach. Then, the GWO algorithm was employed to explore dielectric parameters influenced by moisture in the DH model. Then, the GWO-HMMs was adopted as a classification tool to discriminate the MS of the simulation and experimental data of the bushings. Classification results confirm that the average identification accuracies of the proposed method are 97.17% and 96.81% over these two datasets, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed moisture estimate method for OIP bushings. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as a promising candidate for energy-efficient solutions in future wireless networks. Their dynamic and low-power configuration enables coverage extension, massive connectivity, and low-latency communications. Due to a large number of unknown variables referring to the RIS unit elements and the transmitted signals, channel estimation and signal recovery in RIS-based systems are the ones of the most critical technical challenges. To address this problem, we focus on the RIS-assisted wireless communication system and present two joint channel estimation and signal recovery schemes based on message passing algorithms in this paper. Specifically, the proposed bidirectional scheme applies the Taylor series expansion and Gaussian approximation to simplify the sum-product procedure in the formulated problem. In addition, the inner iteration that adopts two variants of approximate message passing algorithms is incorporated to ensure robustness and convergence. Two ambiguities removal methods are also discussed in this paper. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes show the superiority over the state-of-art benchmark method. This paper presents secrecy analyses of a full-duplex MIMOME network which consists of two full-duplex multi-antenna users (Alice and Bob) and an arbitrarily located multi-antenna eavesdropper (Eve). The paper assumes that Eve's channel state information (CSI) is completely unknown to Alice and Bob except for a small radius of secured zone. The first part of this paper aims to optimize the powers of jamming noises from both users. To handle Eve's CSI being unknown to users, the focus is placed on Eve at the most harmful location, and the large matrix theory is applied to yield a hardened secrecy rate to work on. The performance gain of the power optimization in terms of maximum tolerable number of antennas on Eve is shown to be significant. The second part of this paper shows two analyses of anti-eavesdropping channel estimation (ANECE) that can better handle Eve with any number of antennas. One analysis assumes that Eve has a prior statistical knowledge of its CSI, which yields lower and upper bounds on secure degrees of freedom of the system as functions of the number (N) of antennas on Eve and the size (K) of information packet. The second analysis assumes that Eve does not have any prior knowledge of its CSI but performs blind detection of information, which yields an approximate secrecy rate for the case of K being larger than N. In this paper, two different timing-mismatch compensation strategies for two-channel time-interleaved analog-to-digital converters are comprehensively analyzed and compared. In the first strategy (SA), one channel serves as a reference channel, and the other channel is compensated to match the reference channel using the timing mismatch between the channels. In the second strategy (SB), both channels are compensated to match each other, using half the value of the channel mismatch with different signs. For SB, the paper introduces a novel compensation structure that utilizes parallel differentiator-multiplier (PDM) branches. Expressions for the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) after compensation are derived for both strategies. These expressions reveal that the novel PDM structure achieves a remarkably greater SFDR than the existing cascaded differentiator-multiplier (CDM) compensation structure which can be used for both SA and SB. This is because, after compensation, the remaining aliasing distortion in the proposed PDM structure is shown to be of higher approximation order (in terms of the mismatch value) and thus substantially smaller than in the CDM structure. Millimeter-wave rotary-wing (RW) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air-to-ground (A2G) links face unpredictable Doppler effect arising from the inevitable wobbling of RW UAV. Moreover, the time-varying channel characteristics during transmission lead to inaccurate channel estimation, which in turn results in the deteriorated bit error probability performance of the UAV A2G link. This paper studies the impact of mechanical wobbling on the Doppler effect of the millimeter-wave wireless channel between a hovering RW UAV and a ground node. Our contributions of this paper lie in: i) modeling the wobbling process of a hovering RW UAV; ii) developing an analytical model to derive the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF) for the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link in a closed-form expression; and iii) investigating how RW UAV wobbling impacts the Doppler effect on the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. Numerical results show that different RW UAV wobbling patterns impact the amplitude and the frequency of ACF oscillation in the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. The use of antenna arrays is indispensable in radar and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications areas, as it permits the treatment of wavefronts in the spatial domain, enabling important applications such as beamforming and target detection. Spatial information is commonly given in terms of spatial correlation functions (SCFs), but its representation in terms of angular domain, such as the power azimuth spectrums (PASs), is sometimes more convenient. Therefore, transforming from SCF to PAS, and vice versa, is often required. This is commonly done by employing so-called beamformers, where the Bartlett beamformer (BB) is the most commonly utilized. However, the use of beamformers alone is not enough for retrieving PAS information from a given SCF. Particularly, this paper shows that a non-linear operation is missing in relating SCFs to PASs as provided by current beamformers. The paper also shows the mathematical expressions that correctly relate SCFs to PASs and wavenumber spectrums (WNSs) for the general case of systems with antenna arrays. A hybrid communication network with a common analog source signal and independent digital data streams at the transmitters of a multiple access network is considered. The receiver has to estimate the analog signal samples with a given fidelity, and decode the digital streams with a low error probability. The main goal of this paper is to characterize the optimal tradeoff between the mean-squared error distortion in source estimation and the data rates available to each user. To this end, we consider a Gaussian multiple access channel (GMAC) setup with additive state, where the state is nothing but a scaled version of the source process itself. The state process is assumed to be non-causally available to all the transmitting nodes. The problem now becomes that of the joint state estimation and message communication in a GMAC with state. We provide a complete characterization of the optimal distortion-rate tradeoff for an $N$ —sender GMAC. Our results show that, similar to the single-user results, it is optimal to amplify the state using uncoded transmissions, whereas the digital streams are superposed using appropriate Gaussian codebooks in conjunction with dirty paper coding (DPC). Since the variance of the additive state is controlled by a scaling factor in our model, we also recover the results for communicating a common source and independent messages over a GMAC without state as a special case. The read channel of a Flash memory cell degrades after repetitive program and erase (P/E) operations. This degradation is often modeled as a function of the number of P/E cycles. In contrast, this paper models the degradation as a function of the cumulative effect of the charge written and erased from the cell. Based on this modeling approach, this paper dynamically allocates voltage using lower voltage write thresholds at the beginning of the device lifetime and increasing the thresholds as needed to maintain the mutual information of the read channel in the face of degradation. This paper introduces the technique in an idealized setting and then removes ideal assumptions about channel knowledge and available voltage resolution to conclude with a practical scheme with performance close to that of the idealized setting. This paper considers the uplink performance of a multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system with mobile users. Mobility brings two major problems to a MIMO-OFDM system: inter carrier interference (ICI) and channel aging. In practice, it is common to allot multiple contiguous subcarriers to a user as well as schedule multiple users on each subcarrier. Motivated by this, we consider a general subcarrier allocation scheme and derive expressions for the ICI power, uplink signal to interference plus noise ratio and the achievable uplink sum-rate, taking into account the ICI and the multi-user interference due to channel aging. We show that the system incurs a near-constant ICI power that depends linearly on the ratio of the number of users per subcarrier to the number of subcarriers per user, nearly independently of how the UEs distribute their power across the subcarriers. Further, we exploit the coherence bandwidth of the channel to reduce the length of the pilot sequences required for uplink channel estimation. We consider both zero-forcing and maximal-ratio combining at the receiver and compare the respective sum-rate performances. In either case, the subcarrier allocation scheme considered in this paper leads to significantly higher sum-rates compared to previous work, owing to the near-constant ICI property as well as the reduced pilot overhead. Spatial modulation (SM) is one special type of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique whose advantage is that only one radio-frequency (RF) chain is needed. Recently, the so-called cross Z-complementary pair (CZCP) was proposed as the SM training sequence. Optimal channel estimation performance over frequency-selective channels can be achieved since the CZCPs have the specific zero correlation zone (ZCZ) for auto-correlation and cross-correlation sums. However, the ZCZ width of the CZCP is theoretically upper bounded by half sequence length. In this paper, the CZCP is extended to the cross Z-complementary set (CZCS) to have larger ZCZ width which can be used in SM to combat larger delay spread. Several generic constructions of CZCSs with large ZCZ widths and flexible lengths are proposed in this paper. Even the perfect CZCS, whose ZCZ width has the maximum value, can be obtained. This two-part paper aims to quantify the cost of device activity detection in an uplink massive connectivity scenario with a large number of devices but device activities are sporadic. Part I of this paper shows that in an asymptotic massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) regime, device activity detection can always be made perfect. Part II of this paper subsequently shows that despite the perfect device activity detection, there is nevertheless significant cost due to device detection in terms of overall achievable rate, because of the fact that nonorthogonal pilot sequences have to be used in order to accommodate the large number of potential devices, resulting in significantly larger channel estimation error as compared to conventional massive MIMO systems with orthogonal pilots. Specifically, this paper characterizes each active user's achievable rate using random matrix theory under either maximal-ratio combining (MRC) or minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receive beamforming at the base station (BS), assuming the statistics of their estimated channels as derived in Part I. The characterization of user rate also allows the optimization of pilot sequences length. Moreover, in contrast to the conventional massive MIMO system, the MMSE beamforming is shown to achieve much higher rate than the MRC beamforming for the massive connectivity scenario under consideration. This paper considers a massive random access problem in which a large number of sporadically active devices wish to communicate with a base station (BS) equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. Each device is preassigned a unique signature sequence, and the BS identifies the active devices by detecting which sequences are transmitted. This device activity detection problem can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem for which the sample covariance matrix of the received signal is a sufficient statistic. The goal of this paper is to characterize the feasible set of problem parameters under which this covariance based approach is able to successfully recover the device activities in the massive MIMO regime. Through an analysis of the asymptotic behaviors of MLE via its associated Fisher information matrix, this paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Fisher information matrix to ensure a vanishing probability of detection error as the number of antennas goes to infinity, based on which a numerical phase transition analysis is obtained. This condition is also examined from a perspective of covariance matching, which relates the phase transition analysis to a recently derived scaling law. Further, we provide a characterization of the distribution of the estimation error in MLE, based on which the error probabilities in device activity detection can be accurately predicted. This paper focuses on channel prediction techniques for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Previous channel predictors are based on theoretical channel models, which would be deviated from realistic channels. In this paper, we develop and compare a vector Kalman filter (VKF)-based channel predictor and a machine learning (ML)-based channel predictor using the realistic channels from the spatial channel model (SCM), which has been adopted in the 3GPP standard for years. First, we propose a low-complexity mobility estimator based on the spatial average using a large number of antennas in massive MIMO. The mobility estimate can be used to determine the complexity order of developed predictors. The VKF-based channel predictor developed in this paper exploits the autoregressive (AR) parameters estimated from the SCM channels based on the Yule-Walker equations. Then, the ML-based channel predictor using the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)-based noise pre-processed data is developed. Numerical results reveal that both channel predictors have substantial gain over the outdated channel in terms of the channel prediction accuracy and data rate. The ML-based predictor has larger overall computational complexity than the VKF-based predictor, but once trained, the operational complexity of ML-based predictor becomes smaller than that of VKF-based predictor. Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence sets and Golay complementary sets (GCSs) have different correlation properties and hence have different engineering applications. A number of constructions of ZCZ sequence sets and GCSs have been proposed, respectively, in the literature. In addition, some ZCZ sequence sets can be constructed from mutually orthogonal GCSs. In this paper, the relationship between GCSs and ZCZ sets is discovered further. We propose a new type of sequence sets which are ZCZ sequence sets and also GCSs. They are called the Golay-ZCZ sequence sets in this paper. Therefore, they have low peak-to-average power ratios when employed in OFDM systems due to the good autocorrelation properties of GCSs. Besides, the Golay-ZCZ sets possess zero autocorrelations and cross-correlations within their ZCZ and hence have the potential application to synchronization. Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is an alternative topology for future wireless networks, where a large number of single-antenna access points (APs) are distributed over the coverage area. There are no cells but all users are jointly served by the APs using network MIMO methods. Prior works have claimed that the CF massive MIMO inherits the basic properties of cellular massive MIMO, namely, channel hardening and favorable propagation. In this paper, we evaluate if one can rely on these properties when having a realistic stochastic AP deployment. Our results show that channel hardening only appears in special cases, for example, when the pathloss exponent is small. However, by using 5–10 antennas per AP, instead of one, we can substantially improve the hardening. Only spatially well-separated users will exhibit favorable propagation, but when adding more antennas and/or reducing the pathloss exponent, it becomes more likely for favorable propagation to occur. The conclusion is that we cannot rely on the channel hardening and the favorable propagation when analyzing and designing the CF massive MIMO networks, but we need to use achievable rate expressions and resource allocation schemes that work well also in the absence of these properties. Minimizing the symbol error in the uplink of multi-user multiple input multiple output systems is important, because the symbol error affects the achieved signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and thereby the spectral efficiency of the system. Despite the vast literature available on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers, previously proposed receivers for block fading channels do not minimize the symbol error in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we show that the true MMSE receiver structure does not only depend on the statistics of the CSI error, but also on the autocorrelation coefficient of the time-variant channel. It turns out that calculating the average SINR when using the proposed receiver is highly non-trivial. In this paper, we employ a random matrix theoretical approach, which allows us to derive a quasi-closed form for the average SINR, which allows to obtain analytical exact results that give valuable insights into how the SINR depends on the number of antennas, employed pilot and data power and the covariance of the time-varying channel. We benchmark the performance of the proposed receiver against recently proposed receivers and find that the proposed MMSE receiver achieves higher SINR than the previously proposed ones, and this benefit increases with increasing autoregressive coefficient. Cell-free massive MIMO is one of the key technologies for future wireless communications, in which users are simultaneously and jointly served by all access points (APs). In this paper, we investigate the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation of effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. To facilitate the theoretical analysis, only single measurement vector (SMV) based MMSE estimation is considered in this paper, i.e., the MMSE estimation is performed based on the received pilot signals at each AP separately. Inspired by the decoupling principle of replica symmetric postulated MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) non-zero components, we develop the corresponding decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) non-zero components, which plays a key role in the theoretical analysis of SMV based MMSE estimation of the effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. Subsequently, based on the obtained decoupling principle of MMSE estimation, likelihood ratio test and the optimal fusion rule, we perform user activity detection based on the received pilot signals at only one AP, or cooperation among the entire set of APs for centralized or distributed detection. Via theoretical analysis, we show that the error probabilities of both centralized and distributed detection tend to zero when the number of APs tends to infinity while the asymptotic ratio between the number of users and pilots is kept constant. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of oracle estimation in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity via random matrix theory. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the potential performance loss of SMV based MMSE estimation, which does not employ the correlation between the received pilot signals at different APs, the multiple measurement vector (MMV) based MMSE estimation, i.e., joint MMSE estimation with pilot signals from all APs, is analyzed via numerical results. Numerical analysis shows that the theoretical analyze with our decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with i.n.i.d. non-zero components matches well with the numerical results. In wireless communication systems, channel state feedback (CSF) is widely used to improve link performance. However, CSF consumes extra system resources and results in transmission overhead. In this paper, we evaluate such resource consumption in terms of bit rate and provide an explicit expression for the lower bound of the CSF overhead. We propose an overhead optimization mechanism under the constraint of channel state reconstruction accuracy. The numerical simulations show that our paper is beneficial to select the optimum CSF parameters, including the average bit number and channel state feedback period. This paper addresses the channel estimation issue for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems with lens antenna array. Firstly, we formulate the channel estimation problem into the framework of sparse signal recovery. The formulation takes into account of the energy focusing property of the lens antenna array as well as the mutipath sparsity in mmWave MIMO channels. Then we develop an expectation maximization (EM) based algorithm to learn the parameters in the formulation, thereby fulfilling the channel estimation. This paper investigates the achievable performance of cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at both the access points (APs) and users. A closed-form expression for the achievable rate is derived, which enables the study of the effects of AP number, antenna number per AP, user number, and ADC resolution on the achievable rate. In addition, a simple asymptotic approximation for the individual user rate is presented, which shows that the user rate is mainly constrained by the ADC resolution at the user. Moreover, we propose an ADC resolution bits allocation scheme aiming at maximizing the sum rate subject to the total ADC resolution bits constraint, which substantially outperforms the equal ADC resolution bits allocation scheme. Furthermore, a max–min power control scheme is proposed, which not only ensures user fairness, but also improves the achievable rate. The problem of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation at millimeter-wave frequencies, both in single-user setting and in multi-user setting, is tackled in this paper. Using a subspace approach, we develop a protocol enabling the estimation of the right (respectively, left) singular vectors at the transmitter (respectively, receiver) side; then, we adapt the projection approximation subspace tracking with deflation and the orthogonal Oja algorithms to our framework and obtain two-channel estimation algorithms. We also present an alternative algorithm based on the least squares approach. The hybrid analog/digital nature of the beamformer is also explicitly taken into account at the algorithm design stage. In order to limit the system complexity, a fixed analog beamformer is used at both sides of the communication links. The obtained numerical results, showing the accuracy in the estimation of the channel matrix dominant singular vectors, the system achievable spectral efficiency, and the system bit error rate, prove that the proposed algorithms are effective and that they compare favorably, in terms of the performance-complexity tradeoff, with respect to several competing alternatives. This paper presents a comparative performance analysis of multiuser multirelay two-way and one-way amplify-and-forward relaying systems employing opportunistic transmission in the presence of channel estimation error and hardware impairments over Rayleigh fading channels. Considering such a practical scenario, we first deduce instantaneous end-to-end signal-to-noise-plus-distortion-and-error ratios at the end-user terminals. Then, we derive exact closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP) and expected spectral efficiency for both the systems. Further, we obtain simple asymptotic expressions at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, which facilitate the characterization of achievable diversity order of the systems. Thereafter, we validate our derived analytical expressions with the simulation results, which are sufficiently tight across the entire range of SNRs. Eventually, we optimize power allocation in order to minimize OP of the systems. Numerical results reveal the improvement in system outage when power allocation is in accordance with its optimal value. Findings of the paper suggest that full diversity order can be achieved only when the radio frequency front-end hardware is assumed to be perfect, while in practice the imperfections in hardware are inevitable and will reduce system diversity. In this paper, we propose a transmission control scheme for the approximate message passing (AMP)-based joint user identification and channel estimation in massive connectivity networks. In the proposed transmission control scheme, a transmission control function is designed to determine a user’s transmission probability, when it has a transmission demand. By employing a step transmission control function for the proposed scheme, we derive the channel distribution experienced by the receiver to describe the effect of transmission control on the design of AMP algorithm. Based on that, we modify the AMP algorithm by designing a minimum mean squared error (MMSE) denoiser, to jointly identify the user activity and estimate their channels. We further derive the false alarm and missed detection probabilities to characterize the user identification performance of the proposed scheme. Closed-form expressions of the average packet delay and the network throughput are obtained. Furthermore, we optimize the transmission control function to maximize the network throughput. We demonstrate that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the user identification and channel estimation performance, reduce the average delay, and boost the throughput, compared to the conventional scheme without transmission control. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently received extensive research interest due to its capability to intelligently change the wireless propagation environment. For RIS-aided wireless communications in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode, channel feedback at the user equipment (UE) is essential for the base station (BS) to acquire the downlink channel state information (CSI). In this paper, a dimension reduced channel feedback scheme is proposed to reduce the channel feedback overhead by exploiting the single-structured sparsity of BS-RIS-UE cascaded channel. Since different UEs share the same sparse BS-RIS channel but have their respective RIS-UE channels, there are only limited non-zero column vectors in the BS-RIS-UE cascaded channel matrix, and different UEs share the same indexes of the non-zero columns. Thus, the downlink CSI can be decomposed into user-independent channel information (i.e., the indexes of non-zero columns) and user-specific channel information (i.e., the non-zero column vectors), where the former for all UEs can be fed back by only one UE, while the latter can be fed back with a fairly low overhead by different UEs, respectively. Simulation results show that, compared with the conventional method, the proposed scheme can reduce channel feedback overhead by more than 80% for RIS-aided wireless communications. In underwater acoustic (UWA) adaptive communication system, due to time-varying channel, the transmitter often has outdated channel state information (CSI), which results in low efficiency. UWA channels are much more difficult to estimate and predict than terrestrial wireless channels, given the more severe multipath environments with varying propagation speeds in different locations, non-linear propagation paths, several-order higher propagation latency, mobile transceiver and obstacles in the sea, etc. To handle the complexity, this paper proposes an efficient online CSI prediction model for UWA CSI prediction considering the complicated correlationship of UWA channels in both the time and frequency domains. This paper designs a learning model called CsiPreNet, which is an integration of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short term memory (LSTM) network. The performance is compared with the widely used recursive least squares (RLS) predictor, the approximate linear dependency recursive kernel least-squares (ALD-KRLS), and two common conventional deep neural networks (DNN) predictors, i.e., back propagation neural network (BPNN) and LSTM network using the measured data recorded in the South China Sea. To validate the efficacy of prediction, we investigate the prediction of CSI in simulated downlink UWA orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. Specifically, the measured UWA channel is used in the OFDMA system. A joint subcarrier-bit-power adaptive allocation scheme is used for resource allocation. To further improve the performance, we develop an offline-online prediction scheme, enabling the prediction results to be more stable. Simulation and experimental results show that the CsiPreNet has superior performance than the existing solutions, thanks to its capability in capturing both the temporal and frequency correlation of the UWA CSIs. Cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) enable a network platform for beyond the fifth generation of communication networks (B5G), which incorporates the advances in cloud computing technologies to modern radio access networks. Recently, rate splitting multiple access (RSMA), relying on multi-antenna rate splitting (RS) at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receivers, has been shown to manage the interference in multi-antenna communication networks efficiently. This paper considers applying RSMA in C-RAN. We address the practical challenge of a transmitter that only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) of the users. To this end, the paper investigates the problem of stochastic coordinated beamforming (SCB) optimization to maximize the ergodic sum-rate (ESR) in the network. Furthermore, we propose a scalable and robust RS scheme where the number of the common streams to be decoded at each user scales linearly with the number of users, and the common stream selection only depends on the statistical CSI. The setup leads to a challenging stochastic and non-convex optimization problem. A sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) based algorithm is adopted to tackle the intractable stochastic non-convex optimization and guarantee convergence to a stationary point asymptotically. The numerical simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed RS strategy and show a gain up to 27% in the achievable ESR compared with state-of-the-art schemes, namely treating interference as noise (TIN) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes. This correspondence paper studies the impact of nonidentically distributed channel estimation error on performance of a scheduled space-time block coding with mean-value power allocation in cognitive-radio multiple-input multiple-output system. Using the derived probability density function, the exact closed-form expressions of the proposed system for outage probability, ergodic capacity, and symbol-error rate (SER) with both $\rm M$ -ary quadrature amplitude modulation and phase shift keying modulation are derived. Using asymptotic analysis, this paper quantifies the diversity order for both outage probability and SER in the presence of nonidentically distributed error. From the analysis results, this paper shows that the diversity order is enhanced by the multiuser diversity as the number of user terminals increases regardless of outage probability and SER, while the spatial diversity is eliminated. This paper investigates the performance analysis of dual selection (i.e., combining user selection and transmit antenna selection) with maximal ratio combining (MRC) over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation in a multiple-input multiple-output system. This paper derives the exact and approximate cumulative density function and probability density function (PDF) for the dual selection with MRC over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation. Using the distribution, the exact and approximate closed-form expressions of the outage probability are derived with quantification of diversity order. Further, this paper derived the exact ergodic capacity and approximate outage capacity of the the dual selection via Gaussian and Gamma approximations. The numerical results show that the capacity of the dual selection with MRC is enhanced by the number of receive antennas as well as the number of user terminals and sum of channel correlation coefficients, while the order of the receive spatial diversity for outage probability is eliminated by the nonidentical channel estimation error. This paper focuses on the problem of separately modulating and jointly estimating two independent continuous-valued parameters sent over a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) under the mean square error (MSE) criterion without bandwidth constraints. To this end, we first improve an existing lower bound on the MSE that is obtained using the parameter modulation-estimation techniques for the single-user additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. As for the main contribution of this paper, this improved modulation-estimation analysis is generalized to the model of the two-user Gaussian MAC. We present outer bounds to the achievable region in the plane of the MSE’s of the two user parameters, which provides a trade-off between the MSE’s, where we used zero-rate lower bounds on the error probability of Gaussian channels by Shannon and Polyanskiy et al. Numerical results showed that, the multi-user adaptation of the zero-rate lower bound by Polyanskiy et al. provides a tighter overall lower bound on the MSE pairs than the classical Shannon bound. In addition, we introduced upper bounds on the MSE exponents, namely, the exponential decay rates of these MSE’s in the asymptotic regime of long blocks that could make use of any bound on the error exponent of a single-user AWGN channel. The obtained results are numerically evaluated for three different bounds on the reliability function of the Gaussian channel. It is shown that the adaptation of the reliability function by Ashikhmin et al. to the MAC provides a significantly tighter characterization than Shannon’s sphere-packing bound and the divergence bound. Multiple antenna techniques that allow energy beamforming have been looked upon as a possible candidate for increasing the transfer efficiency between the energy transmitter (ET) and the energy receiver in wireless power transfer. This paper introduces a novel scheme that facilitates energy beamforming by utilizing received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values to estimate the channel. First, in the training stage, the ET will transmit using each beamforming vector in a codebook, which is predefined using a Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis. RSSI value corresponding to each beamforming vector is fed back to the ET, and these values are used to estimate the channel through a maximum likelihood analysis. The results that are obtained are remarkably simple, requires minimal processing, and can be easily implemented. Millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency spectrum offers orders of magnitude greater spectrum to mitigate the severe spectrum shortage in conventional cellular bands. To overcome the high propagation loss in the mmWave band, massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) can be adopted at both transmitter and receiver to provide large beamforming gains. At the same time, hybrid architecture is applied to reduce the huge power consumption caused by devices operating at radio frequency (RF). However, because of the hybrid architecture and large number of antennas, it is hard to obtain the channel state information (CSI) which is crucial for obtaining desirable beamforming gains. Off-grid error and sparsity pattern (SP) estimation error are two main limiting factors of the performance of most existing compressive sensing (CS) based channel estimation (CE) algorithms. Off-grid error presents when the true angle does not lie on the discretized angle grid of mmWave channel in the spatial domain. In this paper, we first propose a fast Bayesian matching pursuit method with ‘virtual sparsity’ to improve the accuracy of SP estimation and name it as the improved Bayesian matching pursuit (IBMP). Then an enhanced algorithm, named off-grid IBMP (OG-IBMP), is developed to mitigate the off-grid problem, followed by a theoretical analysis of OG-IBMP. This method iteratively updates the selected grid points and updates the corresponding parameters based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion. Numerical simulations are performed to validate our theoretical analysis and evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Compared to other existing methods, the results show that our proposed OG-IBMP algorithm greatly reduces the off-grid error and significantly enhances the accuracy of the SP estimation with low computational complexity. In conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with frequency division duplexing (FDD), channel acquisition and precoder optimization processes have been designed separately although they are highly coupled. This paper studies an end-to-end design of downlink MU-MIMO systems which include pilot sequences, limited feedback, and precoding. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) framework which jointly optimizes the feedback information generation at users and the precoder design at a base station (BS). Each procedure in the MU-MIMO systems is replaced by intelligently designed multiple deep neural networks (DNN) units. At the BS, a neural network generates pilot sequences and helps the users obtain accurate channel state information. At each user, the channel feedback operation is carried out in a distributed manner by an individual user DNN. Then, another BS DNN collects feedback information from the users and determines the MIMO precoding matrices. A joint training algorithm is proposed to optimize all DNN units in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a training strategy which can avoid retraining for different network sizes for a scalable design is proposed. Recently, research on the design of relay structure and optimal precoding matrix in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems has been proposed in many works assuming that partial or all of the channel state information (CSI) is known. However, in the practical communication systems, the CSI is unknown and needs to be estimated. In particular, channel estimation is more difficult when the relay adopts a hybrid precoding structure. In this paper, we propose an efficient channel estimation scheme based on Tucker-2 tensor model for a multi-way massive MIMO hybrid relay system. The proposed algorithm provides all the CSI involved in the communication links at each user end. Compared with traditional channel estimation algorithms, the proposed algorithm has better estimation performance and requires few iterations to achieve convergence. In this paper, we propose a reference-free artificial noise (AN) waveform design and cancellation scheme for single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless secure transmission. First, a system structure with the aid of AN is presented, where we provide a specific method extracting the sign information of each symbol from the desired signal (DS) to form AN at the transmitter. Then, we notice that the legitimate receiver enable to reconstruct the AN from the received signal by almost the same method as the transmitter without AN reference, which reduces the system complexity in practice. Subsequently, the AN cancellation performance and the secrecy capacity at the receiver are analyzed, and their upper bounds are also derived. Finally, simulation results confirm that the proposed reference-free AN design and cancellation scheme can effectively suppress the AN at legitimate receiver, while degrades the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at eavesdropper seriously, which provides impressive secure performance in terms of secrecy capacity. It is well known that for Gaussian channels, a nearest neighbor decoding rule, which seeks the minimum Euclidean distance between a codeword and the received channel output vector, is the maximum likelihood solution and hence capacity-achieving. Nearest neighbor decoding remains a convenient and yet mismatched solution for general channels, and the key message of this paper is that the performance of nearest neighbor decoding can be improved by generalizing its decoding metric to incorporate channel state dependent output processing and codeword scaling. Using generalized mutual information, which is a lower bound to the mismatched capacity under independent and identically distributed codebook ensemble, as the performance measure, this paper establishes the optimal generalized nearest neighbor decoding rule, under Gaussian channel input. Several restricted forms of the generalized nearest neighbor decoding rule are also derived and compared with existing solutions. Previous correlation-based wideband multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) channel models have been limited to non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios where simple antenna correlation measurements are sufficient to describe the correlated Gaussian process representing the fading statistics. However, in the presence of line-of-sight (LoS) or specular reflections, simple antenna correlation measurements unfortunately do not lead to accurate fading characterizations. In this paper, we propose a trend-stationary correlation-based analytical model for wideband LoS and NLoS MIMO channels and design and validate a wideband multitone MIMO channel sounder and estimator to, respectively, measure channel impulse responses (CIRs) and estimate channel parameters for this model. Joint maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation of the LoS component and the NLoS complex correlation matrix is presented. In addition to enabling the estimation of the path correlation matrix of a wireless channel in the presence of LoS components, the modeling approach also provides tools to evaluate the validity of the assumption of uncorrelated scattering (US), even in LoS environments, which is commonly used in channel modeling. A more general model that does not assume US is also presented, which can likewise be estimated using the proposed estimator. To validate the channel sounding/model estimator techniques, we employ channel sounding waveforms and collect snapshots from the outputs of a state-of-the-art hardware MIMO channel emulator capable of emulating multipath channels under the US assumption. Receiver signal processing and channel parameter estimation are performed on the collected data, and the results are compared with the emulated channel parameters. The work is unique in that it provides a correlation-based multipath MIMO channel modeling approach that addresses LoS environments, it describes corresponding estimation techniques to extract the full complex correlation matrix, and the model estimators are backed using channel sounding with emulation-based validation. Single-image dehazing techniques are extensively used in outdoor optical image acquisition equipment. Most existing methods pay attention to use various priors to estimate scene transmission. In this paper, a fast single-image dehazing algorithm is proposed based on a piecewise transformation model between the minimum channels of the hazy image and the haze-free image in optical model. The minimum channel of the haze-free image is obtained by the piecewise transformation, which is a quadratic function model that we establish for the dark region, and a linear transformation model is established for the bright region. Using the minimum channels of the hazy image and the haze-free image, a transmission estimation model is established based on the haze optical model with adjustment variables. To obtain an accurate estimation of atmospheric light, we estimate the atmospheric light twice. Finally, the haze-free image is restored. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has minimal halo artifacts and color distortion in various depths of field, flat areas and sky areas. To further mitigate the BER error floor of $M$ -ary differential chaos shift keying (MDCSK) modulation for impulsive noise, a low-cost high-reliability coded modulation scheme without equalizations is desirable for impulsive noise. In this paper, a protograph-based low-density parity-check coded MDCSK-based bit-interleaved coded modulation (MDCSK-BICM) scheme is proposed for the scenario with impulsive noise obeying Bernoulli-Laplace distribution. Considering the Gaussian distribution of protograph extrinsic information transfer (PEXIT) and the benchmark of coding design, the U-shaped non-coherent capacity is derived with optimal code rate for square MDCSK, showing that the code rates are stable with $E_b/N_0$ increasing but still much lower than that of DS-16DQAM at code rate $>\!0.145$. The derived joint probability density function can be considered as approximately a Gaussian distribution, which is used to improve the impulsive noise fitted PEXIT. Finally, a new code under a novel principle is designed for better bit error rate performance based on the improved PEXIT analysis. Both PEXIT analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a better BER than that with a traditional scheme, and suggesting a research approach based on simple methods. In this paper, we investigate a two-hop simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication system with an energy-limited relay node. The relay node harvests energy based on the radio-frequency (RF) signal transmitted from the source node through the time-switching (TS) protocol and fully uses the harvested energy to precode and forward the information to the destination node. The non-linear energy harvesting models are considered at the relay node. With the consideration of the channel estimation error, the joint optimization of the TS factor, source and relay precoding matrices is proposed with robustness against the channel state information (CSI) mismatch to maximize the mutual information (MI) between the source and destination nodes. The optimal structure for the source and relay precoding matrices is derived to simplify the transceiver optimization problem. Channel predictions are important to achieve high spectral efficiency for high-mobility vehicles. Channel extrapolation, used by many prediction methods, suffers from a limited prediction horizon in difficult radio environments. The predictor antenna (PA) concept provides the prediction horizons required for efficient transmission to fast-moving vehicles by measuring the channel ahead of time with an extra antenna placed on the vehicle. This paper presents a general framework that addresses the practical signal processing challenges of the PA concept. It is adaptable to a vast variety of vehicular deployment, mobility, and communication scenarios. A new theoretical prediction normalized mean-squared error (NMSE) expression is derived based on the presented framework. The framework is demonstrated by applying it to extensive channel measurements and comparing the PA predictions to Kalman-based channel predictions and outdated channel estimates. By studying the impact of vehicular velocity and radio environment on the prediction performance, it is shown that PA prediction is weaker at low velocities, where Kalman prediction methods are sufficient, but is uncontested at high velocities in environments without a dominating path. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance wireless communication performance cost-effectively. The existing literature has mainly considered IRS being deployed near user terminals to improve their performance. However, this approach may incur a high cost if IRSs need to be densely deployed in the network to cater to random user locations. To avoid such high deployment cost, in this paper we consider a new IRS aided wireless network architecture, where IRSs are deployed in the vicinity of each base station (BS) to assist in its communications with distributed users regardless of their locations. Besides significantly enhancing IRSs’ signal coverage, this scheme helps reduce the IRS-associated channel estimation overhead as compared to conventional user-side IRSs, by exploiting the nearly static BS-IRS channels over short distance. For this scheme, we propose a new two-stage transmission protocol to achieve IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization for uplink data transmission efficiently. In addition, we propose effective methods for solving the user-IRS association problem based on long-term/statistical channel knowledge and the selected user-IRS-BS cascaded channel estimation problem. Finally, all IRSs’ passive reflections are jointly optimized with the BS’s multi-antenna receive combining to maximize the minimum achievable rate among all users for data transmission. Numerical results show that the proposed co-site-IRS empowered BS scheme can achieve significant performance gains over the conventional BS without co-site IRS and existing schemes for IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization, thus enabling an appealing low-cost and high-performance BS design for future wireless networks. In this paper, a new pilot protection scheme for AC line connected to LCC-HVDC inverter based on composite-mode model is proposed. First, taking commutation failure into consideration, 1-mode and 2-mode equivalent instantaneous models of inverter in different operating conditions are built. Second, according to the equivalent instantaneous inductances of inverter in different combinations of operating conditions, the equivalent models of inverter are summarized into 4 operation states. Then, the 1-mode and 2-mode equivalent models are combined to establish the composite-mode model of AC/DC hybrid system. And then, using multi-time section information, the instantaneous inductances of backside composite-mode model are calculated. Thus, protection criterion is constructed on the difference between composite-mode models of in-zone faults and that of out-of-zone faults for fault locating. This paper proposes a new scheme of motion parameter estimation and relocation for airborne three-channel circular stripmap synthetic aperture radar (CSSAR)-ground moving target indication (GMTI) systems. Compared with the conventional straight-path SAR, the parameter estimation of a target is more challenging because the target’s range history and signal model are more complicated due to the complexity of the relative motion between CSSAR and ground moving target. In this paper, the signal model of a ground moving target and the expression for its along-track interferometric (ATI) phase from the environment of airborne three-channel CSSAR are derived. The coupling effect among the target’s motion and position parameters is also figured out. Then, a scheme of motion parameter estimation and relocation is proposed. The proposed scheme utilizes the ATI phase and the quadratic-term coefficient in the range equation to estimate the target’s motion and position parameters and utilizes an iterative strategy to address the coupling effect among these parameters. This paper derives a maximum-likelihood decision rule to detect the signaling information conveyed by the bootstrap for an ATSC 3.0 system and proposes an iterative detection scheme to improve the detection performance. The proposed detection scheme iteratively averages the channel estimates for two consecutive bootstrap symbols by exploiting the previously detected symbol. The simulation results show that the proposed detection scheme can obtain a signal-to-noise ratio gain of approximately 2.0 dB at a frame error rate of $10^{-3}$ compared to the conventional detection scheme. This paper develops novel deep learning-based architectures and design methodologies for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver under the constraint of one-bit complex quantization. Single bit quantization reduces greatly the complexity and power consumption but makes accurate channel estimation and data detection difficult. This is particularly true for multicarrier waveforms that have high peak-to-average power ratio in the time domain and fragile subcarrier orthogonality in the frequency domain. The severe distortion for one-bit quantization typically results in an error floor even at moderately low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) such as 5 dB. For channel estimation (using pilots), we design a novel generative supervised deep neural network that can be trained with a reasonable number of pilots. After channel estimation, a neural network-based receiver—specifically, an autoencoder—jointly learns a precoder and decoder for data symbol detection. Since quantization prevents end-to-end training, we propose a two-step sequential training policy for this model. With synthetic data, our deep learning-based channel estimation can outperform least squares channel estimation for unquantized (full-resolution) OFDM at average SNRs up to 14 dB. This paper proposes a broadcast strategy for the single-user slowly fading channel in which the transmission power is supplied by an energy harvesting unit. In this strategy, the channel state information (CSI) is known only to the receiver, and the transmitter is assumed to be oblivious to the CSI. The broadcast approach enables preventing outage events in the face of the lack of CSI at the transmitter. In the proposed broadcast approach, the transmitter splits its message into multiple superimposed information layers. This facilitates sustaining reliably decodable transmission rates adapted to the unknown state of the randomly-varying fading state of the channel. The objective is to characterize the optimal allocation of the randomly varying harvested power over time and across information layers in the contexts of maximizing the average communication rate and minimizing the likelihood of outage. First, the setting in which the transmitter has non-causal and complete information about the state of the energy harvesting process is considered. A closed-form characterization of the optimal allocation of power across layers is established, and an algorithm that analytically determines the exact optimal allocation of power over time is provided. This paper considers multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, where the channels are spatially correlated Rician fading. The channel model is composed of a deterministic line-of-sight path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight component describing a practical spatially correlated multipath environment. We derive the statistical properties of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE), element-wise MMSE, and least-square channel estimates for this model. Using these estimates for maximum ratio combining and precoding, rigorous closed-form uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derived and analyzed. The asymptotic SE behavior, when using the different channel estimators, are also analyzed.
