Highlights from the article: "Compositional data analysis in practice" (121 pages, including indices and appendices) by Michael Greenacre is a slim, colourful book that introduces compositional data analysis from the point of view of a statistician, illustrating concepts and methods mostly with examples from the biosciences. The book introduces the concepts and methods of logratio analysis of compositional data from a similar standpoint as in Aitchison ([1])-that of I vectors of positive components carrying relative information and, often, adding up to a constant i -, but extends this framework towards the field of correspondence analysis, gathering some interesting results that the author has been presenting at CoDaWork meetings before. Another interesting novelty of the book is the connection with Correspondence Analysis, which provides two very interesting effects: a way to measure subcompositional incoherence, and a way to deal with zeros, a method which unfortunately is not compared with other existing proposals.

In Handling Qualitative Data: A Practical Guide, Richards (2009) presents the reader with beginner-to-intermediate knowledge of qualitative research and the requirements to develop a successful project. Throughout the text there are boxes of information that capture essential steps or informative pieces that the reader should make note of or make it a point to remember. Many studies find that the gender composition of an occupation influences the earnings of incumbents while failing to find parallel effects for race. We suggest that minority representation does not have the same impact on occupational earnings that gender does for several reasons. We explore whether gender and minority composition effects are evident in local labor markets. Data on the fifty largest occupations in one hundred metropolitan areas culled from the 1990 Census form the basis of our analysis. For incumbents in each occupation, we estimate an individual-level earnings equation with controls for education, age, hours and weeks worked and industry. The gender and race composition of an occupation in each metropolitan area are independent variables. We find that the area-specific gender composition of an occupation sometimes has the expected depressing effect on wages, supporting a local-labor market perspective, while a parallel finding for racial composition is rarely evident. In this analysis, we extend previous work by exploring whether the economic penalty associated with female representation is best conceptualized at the job--or occupational--level. If compensation is affected by sex composition of workers' immediate work setting, net of who per forms the work in the entire occupation, this informs us about how this type of wage discrimination occurs, our job-level findings suggest that who does a particular line of work in a specific organization is a much better predictor of compensation than who performs a line of work more generally, in occupational categories. At the individual level, despite numerous tests for interaction effects, we were unable to conclude that female representation in either jobs or occupations penalizes men and women differently. We conclude that job-level sex composition has the largest, most robust effect on earnings and accounts for a substantial proportion of the gender gap in earnings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
