There is a significant variability in the prevalence of psychotropic medication use among young autistic persons worldwide and this is under-studied in Australia. Apart from risperidone, approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to manage challenging behaviour, the appropriateness of other psychotropic medications prescribed to young autistic persons warrants scrutiny. This retrospective study aims to gain initial insight into the magnitude, types and indications of psychotropic medication use in autistic children and adolescents in Western Australia. We analysed de-identified data from 239 autistic children and adolescents (⩽21 years) who participated in the Western Australian Autism Biological Registry between 2011 and 2015 and who completed a questionnaire regarding medication use. One-quarter (n = 66, 28%) of young autistic people reported using a total of 137 medications. Most (n = 46, 70%) of those medicated were under 12 years of age; half (n = 33) were 6–12 years and a fifth (n = 13) were under 6 years. The most used medications were stimulants (n = 35, 53.0%), followed by antidepressants (n = 24, 36.4%), antiepileptics (n = 21, 31.8%), sedatives (n = 15, 22.7%) and antipsychotics (n = 14, 21.2%). These medications were mainly to manage attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, challenging behaviours, seizures, insomnia, undefined anxiety, depression and mood instability. While most autistic young people in the Western Australian Autism Biological Registry did not report using psychotropic medication, over a quarter were prescribed medications, primarily stimulants, to manage symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Various medications, including risperidone, were used to help manage challenging behaviours. Medication use should be studied more comprehensively in a larger cohort of autistic persons to confirm our current preliminary observations. Further, future studies should monitor the effectiveness and safety outcomes of such medications due to a limited understanding of their effectiveness in managing the atypical presentation of co-occurring disorders in young autistic persons. Prescriptions and use of medications to treat mental health conditions in young autistic populations are inconsistent worldwide. This makes it hard to compare findings from international studies to the Australian autistic population, where there are limited relevant studies. This study aims to gain initial broad understanding of the use of medications, commonly prescribed for mental health conditions, specifically by autistics under the age of 21 years. We analysed data that were previously collected as part of the Western Australian Autism Biological Registry between 2011 and 2015 which amounted to 239 surveys completed on young persons with diagnosed autism. The questionnaires included information on co-occurring conditions, current or previous use of medications and reasons for use of the medications. Only one-quarter of the participants in this study reported using at least one mental health–related medication in their lifetime. The most reported medications were stimulants, antidepressants and antiepileptics. The reasons for using medication included managing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, challenging behaviours, seizures, sleep difficulties and symptoms of anxiety and depression. The number of individuals reporting medication use in this study was lower compared to other developed countries. Nevertheless, these medications should be monitored due to limited understanding of their use to manage co-occurring symptoms in young autistic persons. Caregiving is recognised as a source of stress with potential for negative health impacts as well as positive outcomes and development of resilience. For young carers, children, and adolescents providing care for close family members, adaptation through resilience is crucial, yet work using a resilience approach is limited. This study explored protective factors and pathways to resilience in a sample of young carers, through application of the socioecological model in caring relationships. An in-depth qualitative approach was used, with in-person interviews facilitated by auto-driven photo elicitation. Deductive thematic analysis was applied, framed by three levels (individual, community, and society) of the socioecological model of resilience. Twelve participants (nine girls and three boys) aged 5–18 years, each providing care to a family member, were recruited using opportunity and volunteer sampling via carers' centres in the southwest of England. Ten key themes were identified, four at the individual level: pre-empting challenges and planning, cognitive strategies, emotional strategies, and seeking solitude; three at the community level: family support, friendships, and pets and inanimate objects; and three at the society level: professional support, access to caregiver activities and community, and being outdoors. The location of themes at each level indicated relevance of the socioecological model to identification of protective factors in a young carer population. These findings have important applications for guidance to charities and organisations supporting young carers. Identification of factors that promote resilience offers support for the development of well-informed interventions, which harness these protective factors to develop resilience and improve health for young carers. Background: Although pediatric medial epicondylar fractures and apophysitis are well studied, patterns of subapophyseal avulsion and ligamentous injuries of the medial elbow in this population merit investigation to inform optimal treatment strategies. Purpose: To describe the occurrence and demographic correlates of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) avulsion and soft tissue injuries of the pediatric and adolescent elbow. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: An institutional review board–approved review was conducted to identify consecutive patients with medial elbow injuries treated in a tertiary pediatric sports medicine practice between 2016 and 2021. Radiographs were obtained during injury evaluation, and patients with nondisplaced medial epicondylar apophysitis and complete epicondylar fracture were excluded, resulting in 150 patients with soft tissue injuries occurring distal to the medial epicondyle apophysis (subapophyseal) for study. Radiographs were evaluated for bony avulsion of the UCL from either the medial epicondyle proximally or the ulnar sublime tubercle distally. Injuries without radiographic evidence of bony avulsion, but with clinical examination findings consistent with ligamentous injury, were classified as radiographically negative UCL injuries, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to further evaluate these injuries if moderate to severe medial swelling of the elbow or significant concern for medial structural injury was present on examination. These MRI scans were evaluated to classify the UCL injury and assess for periosteal or cartilaginous avulsions. Results: A total of 150 patients (mean age, 12.5 ± 3.4 years; 70 female), 55% (150/274) of the entire medial elbow injury population, had a subapophyseal injury. Of these patients, 62 had a bony avulsion detected on radiograph, and 88 had a radiographically negative injury. In addition to the 62 radiographic avulsions, the 61 MRI scans obtained on those radiographically negative injuries revealed 33 complete UCL disruptions, resulting in 63.3% (95/150) of patients sustaining a complete ligamentous disruption. With the MRI scans, 37 (61%) cases of cartilaginous or periosteal avulsion of the UCL were diagnosed. Overall, 66% of all 150 subapophyseal injuries had a bony, cartilaginous, or periosteal UCL avulsion. Patients with cartilaginous (mean age, 10.3 years) and bony (mean age, 10.6 years) avulsions were younger than those with central ligament injury (mean age, 14.2 years) or periosteal (mean age, 14.2 years) avulsions (P =.005). There was a significant association between the mechanism of injury and the location of UCL tear identified on MRI scans: traumatic falls were associated with distal tears, and throwing injuries were associated with proximal tears (P <.001). Conclusion: UCL central ligament and avulsion lesions may be frequently diagnosed after injury to the pediatric medial elbow, the majority of which are complete injuries, and may require MRI for diagnosis. The mechanism of injury may predict the location of ligamentous injury, and osteocartilaginous avulsions are more likely to present at younger ages than injuries to the soft tissue of the UCL or periosteum. In contrast to adults, there is considerably less research on childhood or adolescent exposure to sexual harassment (CAESH), its lasting psychological correlates, and whether such experiences should be included in definitions of childhood sexual abuse. The current study examined the prevalence and symptomatic sequels of unwanted flirting, being "checked out" sexually, unwanted sexual attention, sexual comments, propositions, and related noncontact behaviors that occurred before age 18, as well as the multivariate relationship between CAESH and contact child sexual abuse (C-CSA) in a diverse online sample of 528 individuals. CAESH was very common, with over 95% of women and 64% of men reporting at least one experience of noncontact sexual harassment before age 18. When childhood sexual abuse was operationalized as the presence of either C-CSA or a total CAESH score of 18 or higher (corresponding to an average score of "3–5 times" prior to age 18), the prevalence was 67% for women and 26% for men, more than three times higher than C-CSA alone. This expanded definition was associated with significantly more anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress relative to C-CSA alone. These results suggest that CAESH is a significant source of symptoms in adults and support the emerging perspective that childhood sexual abuse may be best understood as including both contact and noncontact events. Transgender youth experience elevated rates of eating disorders, yet few screening measures have been validated with transgender patients. The purpose of this study was to provide initial evidence for the internal consistency and convergent validity of the Sick, Control, One Stone, Fat, Food (SCOFF) in a sample of transgender youth. Two hundred eight participants completed the SCOFF as part of a routine screening protocol. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to establish the factor structure of the SCOFF in this sample. Relationships between the SCOFF, Adolescent Binge Eating Disorder (ADO-BED), Nine-Item Avoidant/Restrictive Intake Disorder (NIAS), Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7), and demographic characteristics were explored. The SCOFF was significantly related to all convergent validity variables, with moderate correlations with other eating disorder scales (ADO-BED and NIAS). Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and fruit juice (FJ) consumption may promote lipid abnormalities in childhood. We examined the association between SSB/FJ intake and lipid levels using electronic health record data for 2816 adolescents. Multivariable logistic regression models treated clinical cutpoints for abnormal lipid levels (triglycerides [TG], high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and total cholesterol) as dependent variables. In models not adjusted for adiposity, elevated SSB and FJ consumption was associated with increased odds of having abnormally high TG (SSB: odds ratio [OR] = 1.28 (95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.07-1.52], P =.007); FJ: 1.35 ([1.09-1.69], P =.007)) and abnormally low HDL (SSB: 1.47 ([1.17-1.86], P =.001); FJ: 1.35 ([1.02-1.78], P =.03)). Adjusting for adiposity, a likely mediator of the relationship, attenuated these associations. These findings support the need for identifying unhealthy beverage consumption habits during childhood health care visits as a modifiable behavior associated with cardiometabolic risk. School absenteeism is a major societal problem, with a range of potential adverse long-term consequences. This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the research on school absenteeism in autistic children and adolescents, expose important gaps in the literature, and explore possibilities for future systematic reviews. Five relevant databases were searched systematically from inception to June 2023, yielding a total of 46 eligible reports from 42 separate studies. All studies were conducted in high-income countries, and most were published in the last decade. Three major themes emerged: occurrence, contextual factors, and interventions. The results of large-scale population-based studies clearly suggested that autistic children and adolescents were absent from school more often than their non-autistic peers, which partly was attributable to co-occurring conditions. Bullying also emerged as a potential risk factor. Only a few preliminary studies were available on targeted interventions, emphasizing the need for more robust studies. More research is also needed on the mechanisms leading to and maintaining school absenteeism in this group of learners. Overall, the diversity of research questions, methods, and definitions used in this body of research suggests that systematic reviews with narrow focus on a few key questions may still be premature. Autistic children and teenagers are, on average, absent from school more than their peers. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of the research on absence from school in autistic learners in primary and secondary school, to help guide future research. We sifted through 4632 reports and found 42 studies with a focus on school absence and autism. We looked at how, when, and where the studies were conducted. We also summarized the results and outlined how absence was measured in the studies. Absence from school may lead to problems later in life, like incomplete education and unemployment. It is therefore important to know how common this problem is among autistic learners, what the reasons may be, and what type of support they need. The studies were from high-income countries and were mainly published in the last 10 years. Studies based on school registers from the United States and the United Kingdom clearly showed that children and teenagers with autism had higher risk of school absence than those without autism. Absence was often linked to problems with mental health or additional neurodevelopmental conditions. Several studies also showed that absence in autistic children and adolescents was related to problems in school, like bullying or lack of knowledge about autism. Support programs were only evaluated in a few studies with a small number of study participants. Despite the available evidence identifying the high prevalence rates of potentially traumatic experiences in forensic populations, there is still a lack of evidence supporting the use of suitable assessment tools, especially for young males in custody. For services to identify, support, and offer trauma interventions to this cohort, practitioners require reliable and valid assessment tools. This systematic review (Open Science Framework registration: https://osf.io/r6hbk) identifies those tools able to provide valid, reliable, and comparable data for this cohort. Five electronic databases and gray literature were searched to identify relevant measures. Inclusion criteria: studies of tools to assess for trauma with males aged between 12 and 25 years-old in a custodial setting, any year of publication, and available in English. Exclusion criteria: studies that did not measure psychological trauma or include a standalone trauma scale, or report primary data. A three-step quality assessment method was used to evaluate the methodological quality and psychometric properties of the measures. Fourteen studies were selected for review (which included 12 measures). The studies sampled a total of approximately 1,768 male participants and an age range of 12 to 25 years. The studies reported on various types of psychometric evidence and due to the lack of homogeneity, a narrative synthesis was used to discuss, interpret, and evaluate each measure. The overall quality of the psychometric properties of the measures in this review showed that the currently available instruments for the assessment of trauma with young males in custody is limited but promising. Despite suicide in younger population having become a severe public health issue, information on the prevalence of suicidality among Chinese children and adolescents is still limited. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts in Chinese children and adolescents aged under 18 years. A meta-analysis was conducted based on English and Chinese publications from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2020 using random-effects models. Based on 132 eligible studies with a combined total of 1,103,309 Chinese children and adolescents below 18 years old, the pooled prevalence of the overall suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts were 15.4% (95% CI [14.3, 16.6]), 6.4% (95% CI [5.5, 7.4]) and 3.5% (95% CI [3.1, 4.1]), respectively. The subgroup analyses showed that there were significant variations of prevalence of suicidal risks across genders, school stages, and geographical areas in mainland China. It was the first systematic review and meta-analysis to show suicidality among younger population aged below 18 years is prevalent in mainland China. This study suggests that gender-age-region-specific prevention and intervention programs should be urgently needed to reduce suicidal risks among Chinese children and adolescents. Background: A recent study has reported that the radiographic measurement of posterior tibial slope (PTS) is larger in male pediatric patients with tibial spine fractures (TSF) than in controls. However, they found no difference in PTS between female patients and controls. Purpose: (1) To identify whether PTS is larger in female pediatric patients with TSF than in female controls and (2) to validate the relationship between PTS and pediatric TSF in male patients. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: After an a priori power analysis, 84 pediatric patients with TSF (50 female patients and 34 male patients) and 84 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled in this study. Demographic information, including sex, age, and race, was recorded. Skeletal maturity was determined based on the stage of epiphyseal union on knee radiographs. PTS was defined as the angle between a line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tibia and the posterior inclination of the medial tibial plateau on standard knee lateral radiographs. Results: The mean age when the TSF occurred was 11.2 ± 2.7 years for female patients and 12.9 ± 2.5 years for male patients. There was no significant difference in skeletal maturity between female patients and female controls or between male patients and male controls. The mean PTS was not significantly different between female patients (8.8°± 2.8°) and female controls (8.3°± 3.1°) (P =.366) or between male patients (9.0°± 2.8°) and male controls (9.3°± 2.6°) (P =.675). Those with a PTS >1 SD (2.9°) above the mean (8.8°) had no greater odds (1.0 [95% CI, 0.4-2.5]; P ≥.999) of having a TSF than others. Anxiety disorders in children and adolescents often present in primary care, and many clinicians will need to guide families on treatment. The purpose of this article is to give a brief overview of assessment and treatment principles for clinicians in primary care. Anxiety and its expression are heavily influenced by children's developmental progression and capabilities. Anxiety disorders have multiple underlying etiologies including temperament, environmental exposure to stressors, and childhood trauma. All anxiety disorders are strengthened by an operant process known as escape conditioning. The most effective treatments for child and adolescent anxiety begin with behavioral‐based interventions including exposure with response prevention (ERP) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Medication can be effective in combination with CBT and ERP, or as a standalone treatment when behavioral interventions are not available. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors have been evaluated by randomized clinical trials for the treatment of childhood anxiety, but most are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. When anxiety is severe and functional impairment is high, referral for psychiatric care and multimodal treatment reduces the likelihood of poor outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main aim of this study was to investigate a conceptual model linking subtypes of social withdrawal, social/asocial dissatisfaction, and internalizing problems in late childhood and early adolescence. Participants were N = 459 students (n = 247 girls) aged 8–14 years (M = 11.24, SD = 1.66), who completed self-reports assessments of social withdrawal subtypes (i.e., shyness and unsociability), loneliness and aloneliness, and internalizing problems (i.e., social anxiety and depression). Results from path analyses revealed that shyness was associated with social anxiety and depression via loneliness, whereas unsociability was related to depression and social anxiety via loneliness and associated with depression via aloneliness. Findings also suggested some moderating effects of age. This study highlights the contribution of loneliness and aloneliness in the link between social withdrawal subtypes and internalizing problems in late childhood and early adolescence. Background: Access to a coordinated range of strengths-based, culturally appropriate community-led primary mental health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing services is critical to the mental health and wellbeing of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and is a policy commitment of the Australian government. However, complex and fragmented service networks and a lack of standardised service data are barriers in identifying what services are available and what care they provide. Method: A standardised service classification tool was used to assess the availability and characteristics of Social and Emotional Wellbeing services for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in two regions in Queensland, Australia. Results: We identified a complex pattern of service availability and gaps in service provision. Non-Indigenous non-governmental organisations provided a significant proportion of services, particularly 'upstream' support, while Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations were more likely to provide 'downstream' crisis type care. Most services provided by the public sector were through Child Safety and Youth Justice departments. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate the complexity of current networks, and show that non-Indigenous organisations are disproportionately influential in the care received by young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, despite community goals of self-determination, and government commitment to increasing capacity of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to support their local communities. Objective: This retrospective review documents the experience of ipratropium bromide use among pediatric patients with sialorrhea at our multidisciplinary sialorrhea clinic at Children's Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC). Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with sialorrhea at our multidisciplinary clinic between January 2015 and June 2021 was completed. Data on patient demographics, comorbidities, clinical presentation, previous interventions, quality of life, and medication adverse side effects was collected. Drooling Frequency and Severity Scale (DFSS) scores were reviewed to compare sialorrhea management pre- and post-treatment with topical 0.03% ipratropium bromide nasal solution. A descriptive analysis and Wilcoxon signed rank tests were conducted to compare pre- versus post-treatment DFSS scores. Results: A total of 12 patients presented for follow-up and were included in the final analysis. At the pre-treatment visit, the median DFSS score was 4 for frequency and 5 for severity. Post-treatment, median DFSS score was 3 for frequency and 4.5 for severity, (P =.020 and.129, respectively). Minimal adverse effects were encountered. Conclusions: Ipratropium bromide provided a statistically significant benefit for drooling frequency in the patients studied and may present an additional topical medical option for pediatric sialorrhea with limited adverse effects. Background: While prevention protocols have been implemented, skiing-related musculoskeletal injuries and concussions continue to present to emergency departments in the United States. Previous literature has suggested the pediatric population may constitute up to 40% of skiing-related injuries. Purpose: To assess injury trends and the underlying mechanisms of skiing injuries in pediatric patients seen at emergency departments in the United States. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for pediatric (age ≤18 years) skiing injuries between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2022. Injury mechanism, location, disposition, and diagnosis were recorded, and the statistical sample weight assigned by NEISS by hospital was used to calculate national estimates (NEs). Injury trends were evaluated with linear regression analysis. Results: Overall, 2951 pediatric skiing injuries were included (NE = 123,386). The mean age of the patients was 12.4 ± 3.5 years, with 61.3% of the injuries occurring in male patients. Impact with the ground was the most common injury mechanism (NE = 87,407; 70.8%). Fractures were the most common diagnosis (NE = 38,527, 31.2%), followed by strains/sprains (NE = 22,562, 18.3%), contusions/abrasions (NE = 16,257, 13.2%), and concussions (NE = 12,449, 10.1%). The lower leg was the most common fracture site (NE = 9509, 24.7%), followed by the shoulder (NE = 7131, 18.5%) and lower arm (NE = 5876, 15.3%). Analysis of annual injuries revealed no significant trend between 2012 and 2022 (P =.17), with fluctuations apparent throughout the study period. Significant decreases were seen in strains/sprains (P <.01) and contusions/abrasions (P <.01), but not in concussions (P =.57) or fractures (P =.70). Conclusion: Impacts with the snow/ground made up 70.8% of all injuries. Fractures were the most common injury diagnosis, followed by strains/sprains, with the lower leg being most frequently fractured. Introduction: While vaccines are crucial for disease prevention, disparities in vaccination coverage persist among youths aged 10 to 29 years, including within the United States. Serious games are emerging as a new strategy to address vaccine hesitancy. This systematic review aimed to aggregate and assess the current evidence on game-based interventions to improve youth vaccination rates, evaluating their impact and identifying factors influencing their effectiveness. Methods: This systematic review was conducted through a meticulous search and evaluation of literature from databases including PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature database, ProQuest platform, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Studies were included if they (a) were designed with the purpose of improving youth vaccination rates; (b) were published in English; (c) were published between January 2011 and June 2023; and (d) evaluated the effect of game-based interventions. Search terms included Medical Subject Headings terms and keywords of the eligible articles. Results: Out of 269 studies, 11 were included in the final analysis of this review. The earliest study dated back to 2013, with 5 being randomized controlled trial and 6 studies incorporating theoretical models in their design or outcome measures. The findings indicated a generally positive effect of game-based interventions on vaccine-related knowledge. However, the impact on actual vaccine uptake was limited. In-game avatar customization and collaboration games were found as effective tools for player engagement. Conclusion: The review findings indicated that serious games boost vaccine knowledge but lack strong evidence for influencing youth vaccine uptake. More rigorous research and tailored game designs are needed to determine the effectiveness of game-based interventions and effectively address the diverse needs of youth in vaccine decision-making. Feeding abnormalities, swallowing dysfunction, and gastrointestinal issues cause poor weight gain, oral motor dysfunction, and air swallowing in children with Rett syndrome (RTT). Pneumonia is the leading cause of death. Our study describes fiberoptic endoscopic swallowing findings in 11 female RTT children. Each patient was evaluated using the 8-point Penetration/Aspiration Scale (PAS). The average age was 7 years. All patients had tongue dyskinesis and prolonged oral stage. Eight girls exhibited liquid entering the airway without coughing, whereas 6 did well with pureed meal. Three girls had pneumonia. Age was not correlated with pneumonia episodes (P =.18). Pureed material was related with pneumonia (P =.006), whereas liquids were not. Pureed PAS was positively correlated with Liquid PAS (P =.008) and age (P =.004). All aspiration/penetration incidents occurred before the pharyngeal phase. No patient under 7 years experienced pneumonia episodes. Enterococcus is a relatively uncommon pathogen that causes urinary tract infections (UTIs) in healthy children. Most enterococcal infections occur in patients with risk factors such as anatomical or functional urinary tract anomalies, also known as CAKUT (congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract). Children who are suspected of having UTIs and who have certain risk factors are often treated specifically for enterococcal infection as part of their empiric regimen. Our primary objective was to determine the prevalence of enterococcal UTIs among high-risk children, and specifically among those with positive nitrite tests, with the goal of avoiding treatment with specific anti-enterococcal agents. This retrospective study included all the episodes of UTI treated at a tertiary pediatric center during 2010 to 2018. The data collected from medical records included nephrological and urological risk factors, nitrite status, and isolated pathogens. Of 931 episodes of UTI, 467 (50%) were considered high-risk. In all, 24 of the latter had Enterococcus as a single pathogen; 23 (96%) of these occurred in patients with negative nitrites in the first urine dipstick taken. The sole patient with high-risk factors, a positive nitrite test and coexisting enterococcal UTI had a history of previous enterococcal UTIs. In pediatric patients with nephrological and urological risk factors, who have positive nitrites in urinalysis, the risk for enterococcal UTI appears substantially low. Teachers set the tone for their classrooms, but what teacher beliefs shape students' sense of belonging? We investigate how teachers' mindsets—or their beliefs about learning and school—relate to adolescents' individual and collective reports of classroom belonging. Our pre-registered analyses include a multilevel design of how 1,200 US middle school students (ages 11–13; 50% female; 49% low income; 40% White, 30% Latinx, 13% Black, 9% Asian) and their teachers responded to surveys on educational mindsets. We find teachers' growth mindset and confidence in teaching positively relate to students' math class belonging—explaining between 30 and 40% of belonging among classes. Our data suggest a teacher's own sense of school belonging is unrelated to the belonging students feel in class, suggesting teachers' broad feelings of belonging may not influence students' specific classroom feelings of belonging as anticipated. The efficacy of trauma-focused treatments for children and adolescents is well researched. However, less is known about the long-term and caregiver-reported effects. Searched databases were PsychInfo, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, PTSDPubs, PubMed, Web of Science, and OpenGrey. Treatment effects of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) were computed at 12-month follow-up with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) as primary outcome and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and grief as secondary outcomes. Concordance between participant and caregiver ratings were investigated. TF-CBT showed large improvements across all outcomes from pre-treatment to 12-month follow-up (PTSS: g = 1.71, CI 1.27–2.15) and favorable results compared to active treatments and treatment as usual at 12-month follow-up (PTSS: g =.35, CI.13–.56). More pronounced effects were found in group settings. No significant differences were detected between participant and caregiver ratings with high reliability across almost all outcomes and assessment points. Patients with a functional neurological disorder (FND) experience a lower psychological quality of life and have more mental health concerns. These patients deserve to be treated with a treatment that is evidence-based and proven effective. However, when we look children or adolescents with functional visual disorder (FVD; a subgroup of FND), we see that there is not much evidence for the effectiveness of their treatments. Possible reasons for this lack of evidence and the difficulties in studying children and adolescents with FVD are discussed in this article. Objective: To present the design and methodology for an actively enrolling comparative effectiveness study of revision palatoplasty versus pharyngoplasty for the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) Design: Prospective observational multicenter study Setting: Twelve hospitals across the United States and Canada Participants: Individuals who are 3–23 years of age with a history of repaired cleft palate and a diagnosis of VPI, with a total enrollment target of 528 participants Interventions: Revision palatoplasty and pharyngoplasty (either pharyngeal flap or sphincter pharyngoplasty), as selected for each participant by their treatment team Main Outcome Measure(s): The primary outcome is resolution of hypernasality, defined as the absence of consistent hypernasality as determined by blinded perceptual assessment of a standard speech sample recorded twelve months after surgery. The secondary outcome is incidence of new onset obstructive sleep apnea. Statistical analyses will use propensity score matching to control for demographics, medical history, preoperative severity of hypernasality, and preoperative imaging findings. Results: Study recruitment began February 2021. As of September 2022, 148 participants are enrolled, and 78 have undergone VPI surgery. Enrollment is projected to continue into 2025. Collection of postoperative evaluations should be completed by the end of 2026, with dissemination of results soon thereafter. Conclusions: Patients with VPI following cleft palate repair are being actively enrolled at sites across the US and Canada into a prospective observational study evaluating surgical outcomes. The global burden of oral diseases is high, but access to oral health care is still problematic, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The prevention of oral diseases in the child and adolescent population is the key as it can be prevented and potentially reversed at its early stages. This study aimed to provide evidence on the effectiveness of school-based oral health education in low- and middle-income countries through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Eligible studies had outcomes, such as oral health knowledge, behavior, oral hygiene, gingival health, and caries index, and those published from 1995 to 2019 in English. After screening and reviewing the retrieved articles, 20 studies were included in the systematic review and six eligible studies were selected for meta-analysis. The computed effect size of school-based oral health education in low- and middle-income countries showed improved knowledge, behavior, oral hygiene, and gingival health from the selected studies. However, most of the interventions took place for less than one year, and long-term evidence is still lacking. As repetition and reinforcement are critical in maintaining long-term effects, both country context and sustainability should be considered in school-based oral health education. The expanded version of the Inventory of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms (IDAS-II) is a self-report measure of 18 empirically derived internalizing symptom dimensions. The measure has shown good psychometric properties in adults but has never been evaluated in children and adolescents. A Swedish version of the IDAS-II was administered to 633 children and adolescents (M age =16.6 [ SD = 2.0]) and 203 adults (M age = 35.4 [ SD = 12.1]). The model/data fit of the 18-factor structure was excellent in both samples and measurement invariance across age groups was supported. All scales showed good to excellent internal consistency and psychometric properties replicated in the younger youth sample (< 16 years). Among youth, good convergent validity was established for all scales and divergent validity for most scales. The IDAS-II was better at identifying youth with current mental health problems than an internationally recommended scale of internalizing symptoms. The onset of childhood disruptive behaviors is one of the most common presenting difficulties to clinics worldwide. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has shown to be effective in the reduction of anger and aggression among adults, however to date there has been no systematic review that has examined the effectiveness of ACT in addressing anger and aggression among children, adolescents, and young adults. The current systematic review aimed to evaluate the methodological standing and effectiveness of the peer-reviewed literature of ACT on anger and aggression for this population. PsycINFO, PubMed, and MEDLINE databases were searched systematically in June 2022 to identify studies in English published on the use of ACT for anger and aggression in children, adolescents, and young adults. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria with a combined sample of 305 participants across the interventions. The most common outcome measures used were self-report ratings of anger among participants. Studies were characterized by poor methodological rigor and findings were mixed as regards the effectiveness of ACT in addressing anger and aggression in this population. Some evidence suggests that group ACT may be effective in reducing self-report measures of anger, but no firm conclusions can be drawn from the extant literature due to the heterogeneous nature of the studies, and limited information about ACT protocols and treatment delivery. Further higher-powered studies comparing ACT to treatment as usual or waitlist are needed to clarify what ACT may add as a treatment to anger and aggression in this population. Background: Tibial spine fractures (TSFs) are uncommon injuries that may result in substantial morbidity in children. A variety of open and arthroscopic techniques are used to treat these fractures, but no single standardized operative method has been identified. Purpose: To systematically review the literature on pediatric TSFs to determine the current treatment approaches, outcomes, and complications. Study Design: Meta-analysis; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses) guidelines using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Studies evaluating treatment and outcomes of patients <18 years old were included. Patient demographic characteristics, fracture characteristics, treatments, and outcomes were abstracted. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize categorical and quantitative variables, and a meta-analytic technique was used to compare observational studies with sufficient data. Results: A total of 47 studies were included, totaling 1922 TSFs in patients (66.4% male) with a mean age of 12 years (range, 3-18 years). The operative approach was open reduction and internal fixation in 291 cases and arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation in 1236 cases; screw fixation was used in 411 cases and suture fixation, in 586 cases. A total of 13 nonunions were reported, occurring most frequently in Meyers and McKeever type III fractures (n = 6) and in fractures that were treated nonoperatively (n = 10). Arthrofibrosis rates were reported in 33 studies (n = 1700), and arthrofibrosis was present in 190 patients (11.2%). Range of motion loss occurred significantly more frequently in patients with type III and IV fractures (P <.001), and secondary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury occurred most frequently in patients with type I and II fractures (P =.008). No statistically significant differences were found with regard to rates of nonunion, arthrofibrosis, range of motion loss, laxity, or secondary ACL injury between fixation methods (screw vs suture). Conclusion: Despite variation in TSF treatment, good overall outcomes have been reported with low complication rates in both open and arthroscopic treatment and with both screw and suture fixation. Arthrofibrosis remains a concern after surgical treatment for TSF, but no significant difference in incidence was found between the analysis groups. Schools' health screenings can identify students' missed health concerns. Data from the 2016 School Health Policies and Practices Study were used to determine the proportion of U.S. school districts with physical and mental health screening policies and the proportion that arrange off-campus mental health services. We also examined differences between districts with and without mental health screening policies regarding having physical health screening policies, patterns of these policies, and off-campus mental health service arrangements. Eleven percent of districts had no policies on any of the four physical health screenings assessed, and 87% lacked policies on mental health screenings, the latter especially concerning considering the impact of COVID-19. Districts with policies on mental health screenings were significantly more likely to have body mass index (p <.01) and oral health (p <.001) screening policies, and to arrange for off-campus case management (p <.001), family counseling (p <.05), group counseling (p <.01), self-help (p <.05) and intake evaluation (p <.05). Students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are struggling writers. Yet no comprehensive model has been validated to explain their poor writing outcomes. This study aims to test whether an extended version of the Not-So-Simple View of Writing (NSVW) model can describe the effects of key abilities on writing performance in students with ADHD. The sample included students with and without ADHD who completed cognitive and academic measures in the Colorado Twin Project. A Multi-Group Structural Equation Model approach revealed that multiple broad cognitive abilities predicted student writing performance and basic writing skills predicted more advanced writing skills. Model fit was excellent both for a model with writing as a single latent variable (fully latent) and as interrelated manifest variables (partially latent). Furthermore, students with and without ADHD demonstrated comparable patterns of relationships among the variables in the model. Background: Childhood, adolescent and young-adult (AYA) cancer survivors often experience health problems due to late or long-term effects of their cancer or the treatment thereof. The general population gains health benefits from immersion in nature, and nature-based programmes seem to be an intervention that can promote health among childhood and AYA cancer survivors. Objective: To explore the impact of the WAYA wilderness programme on the health of childhood and AYA cancer survivors. Methods: The study had a qualitative approach, with data from individual interviews (n = 18) 3 months after completion of the WAYA programme. In addition, case report data was collected during follow-up talks (1, 2 and 12 months after the programme) (n = 19). The WAYA programme consisted of an 8-day expedition, followed 3 months later by a 4-day base camp. The programme included activities such as hiking, backpacking, kayaking, rock climbing, bushcraft and mindfulness. Data was analysed according to a qualitative content analysis. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) were followed. Results: An overarching theme was identified: "Personal growth from challenges in nature supported by deep connections with others". In 4 additional themes, participants' experiences describe how deep personal connections arose, as they developed a feeling of being able and competent in nature. Nature provided a space that supported relaxation and respite from everyday challenges and stimuli, which also led to an experience of being more connected to nature. Conclusion: The WAYA programme was experienced as being of support to childhood and AYA cancer survivors. The programme provided them with skills and tools to be safe in nature. When connected to nature, the participants developed trust and self-confidence, personal growth, relaxation and recovery from stress. Background: Children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions have multidimensional needs and heterogenous cognitive and communicative abilities. There is limited evidence to support clinicians to tailor their communication to each individual child. Aim: To explore the language children and young people use to describe their own condition, to inform strategies for discussing needs and priorities. Design: Positioned within a s ocial constructivist paradigm, a secondary discourse analysis of s emi-structured interview data was conducted incorporating the discourse dynamics approach for figurative language. Setting/participants: A total of 26 children and young people aged 5–17 years with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions (6 cancer; 20 non-cancer) were recruited from nine clinical services (six hospitals and three hospices) across two UK nations. Results: The language children and young people use positions them as 'experts in their condition'. They combine medical terminology with their preferred terms for their body to describe symptoms and treatments, and use comparatives and superlatives to communicate their health status. Their language depicts their condition as a 'series of (functional and social) losses', which single them out from their peers as 'the sick one'. Older children and young people also incorporate figurative language to expand their descriptions. Conclusion/discussion: Children and young people can provide rich descriptions of their condition. Paying attention to their lexical choices, and converging one's language towards theirs, may enable more child-centred discussions. Expanding discussions about 'what matters most' with consideration of the losses and differences they have experienced may facilitate a fuller assessment of their concerns, preferences and priorities. Self-injurious behavior (SIB) among children and youth with developmental disabilities has not diminished in prevalence despite the availability of effective interventions, and the impact on quality of life for people and their families is devastating. The current meta-analysis reviews SIB intervention research between 2011 and 2021 using single-case experimental designs with children and youth up to 21 years old and provides a quantitative synthesis of data from high-quality studies including moderator analyses to determine effects of participant and study characteristics on intervention outcomes. Encouraging findings include a high level of effectiveness across studies in the decrease of SIB (Tau- U = −0.90) and increase of positive behavior (Tau- U = 0.73), as well as an increase in studies (relative to prior reviews) reporting intervention fidelity, generalization, maintenance, and social validity. However, our findings shed limited light on potential moderating variables in the development of interventions for children and youth who exhibit SIB. Of the potential moderators of intervention effects, only implementer (researcher/therapist vs. parent/caregiver) and setting (clinic vs. home) were significantly associated with improved outcomes. We discuss the need for more robust involvement of natural communities of implementers in SIB intervention research to better equip them to effectively and sustainably meet the needs of people they care for. We also discuss the importance of creating systems enabling broad access for children with SIB to effective interventions in service of reducing burden for people, families, and society over time. A retrospective, cross-sectional study of children with suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs) 3 months to 18 years of age who had a urinalysis and urine culture (UC) during an emergency department (ED) visit between 2019 and 2020 was performed. Chi-square, Fisher exact, and independent samples T tests were used as appropriate. Median age was 6.6 years (interquartile range = 3.3-12.4). Urinalysis positivity was 92.8%, of which 81.9% of children were prescribed a first-line antibiotic. First-line antibiotic use was 82.7%. Positive UC rate was 84.7%, with 84% receiving a first-line antibiotic (P =.025). The correlation between a positive urinalysis and a positive UC was 80.8% (P <.001). Change of antibiotics based on the uropathogen of positive UCs was 6.3% (P <.001). The urinalysis and UC guided the diagnosis and treatment of UTIs. First-line antibiotics can be safely administered in the ED and prescribed for positive urinalyses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between dietary zinc intakes and skeletal muscle mass and strength in children and adolescents. A retrospective study was conducted using data on United States adolescents aged 8 to 19 years. Data were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014 cycles. Subjects were divided into 3 groups based on the tertiles of dietary zinc intakes. The levels of appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by weight (ASM/Wt, %) and grip in subjects with the highest tertile were higher than those in subjects with the middle and lowest tertiles (P <.05). Dietary zinc intakes were positively correlated with ASM/Wt (r =.221, P <.001) and grip (r = 0.169, P <.001). After a multivariate analysis, dietary zinc intakes were still significantly associated with ASM/Wt (β = 0.059, P <.001) and grip (β = 0.245, P <.001). Objective: This study examined subclinical atherosclerosis in drug-naïve children with anxiety disorders using non-invasive measures to investigate the clinical features associated with subclinical atherosclerosis. Method: A total of 37 drug-naive children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and 37 healthy controls were included in the study. The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T and STAI-S) were used to assess children's depression and anxiety levels. Carotid artery intima-media (cIMT), epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), and periaortic adipose tissue (PAT) thicknesses, which are indicators of subclinical atherosclerosis, were obtained by echocardiographic measurements. Results: Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) revealed a significant main effect on cIMT, EAT thickness, and PAT thickness, independent of confounding factors such as age, sex, body mass index, mean blood pressure, and family income (Pillai's Trace V =.76, F (1, 72) = 35.60, P <.001, ηp2 =.76). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that cIMT, EAT thickness, and PAT thickness values were significantly higher in the anxiety disorder group compared to the the control group (P <.001). In partial correlation analysis, a positive correlation was observed between STAI-T and cIMT and EAT thickness. In linear regression analyses, age and STAI-T were significantly correlated with cIMT and EAT thickness levels. Purpose: To compare clinical profiles of pediatric patients with Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO), Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO), and EILO with non-exertion related secondary triggers (EILO+). Methods: A retrospective observational cohort design was employed. Four-hundred and twenty-three patients <18 years of age were identified from the electronic medical record of a large children's hospital. All patients underwent evaluations with a laryngologist and speech-language pathologist and were diagnosed with EILO/ILO. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on dyspnea triggers reported in initial evaluations. Groups consisted of patients with EILO (N = 281), ILO (N = 30), and EILO+ (N = 112). Patient demographics, EILO/ILO symptoms, endoscopy findings, medical comorbidities, medical history, and EILO/ILO treatment information were extracted and compared across EILO/ILO subtypes. Results: Patients with EILO experienced higher rates of hyperventilation (P <.001), sore throat (P =.023), and chest pain (P =.003). Patients with ILO were significantly younger in age (P =.017) and presented with increased rates of nighttime symptoms (P <.001), globus sensation (P =.008), self-reported reflux symptoms (P =.023), and history of gastrointestinal conditions (P =.034). Patients with EILO+ were more likely to be female (P =.037) and presented with higher prevalence of anxiety (P =.003), ADHD (P =.004), chest tightness (P =.030), and cough (P <.001). Conclusions: Patients with EILO, ILO, and EILO+ present with overlapping but unique clinical profiles. A prospective study is warranted to determine the etiology of these differences and clarify how the efficacy of EILO, ILO, and EILO+ treatment can be maximized. Different forms of maltreatment are thought to incur a cumulative and non-specific toll on mental health. However, few large-scale studies draw on psychiatric diagnoses manifesting in early childhood and adolescence to identify sequelae of differential maltreatment exposures, and emotional maltreatment, in particular. Fine-grained multi-source dimensional maltreatment assessments and validated age-appropriate clinical interviews were conducted in a sample of N = 778 3 to 16-year-olds. We aimed to (a) substantiate known patterns of clinical outcomes following maltreatment and (b) analyse relative effects of emotional maltreatment, abuse (physical and sexual), and neglect (physical, supervisory, and moral-legal/educational) using structural equation modeling. Besides confirming known relationships between maltreatment exposures and psychiatric disorders, emotional maltreatment exerted particularly strong effects on internalizing disorders in older youth and externalizing disorders in younger children, accounting for variance over and above abuse and neglect exposures. Our data highlight the toxicity of pathogenic relational experiences from early childhood onwards, urging researchers and practitioners alike to prioritize future work on emotional maltreatment. Although enjoyment has been linked to participation in physical activity (PA), a thorough analysis of the concept is lacking. Health-related behavior research emphasizes the necessity of focusing on individual psychological requirements, such as enjoyment in PA, to boost children and adolescents' motivation for PA. The current paper is a report on a conceptual analysis of the enjoyment of PA among children and adolescents. We adopted the concept analysis procedure by Walker and Avant. Several databases (PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, PsychInfo, and Sport Discus) were searched and used to extract relevant articles about the enjoyment of PA. The review process yielded a final set of 72 papers. A refined definition of enjoyment in PA, attributes, cases, antecedents, and consequences of enjoyment in PA were presented. Background: There has been little focus on concussions in youth lacrosse players in the United States. Purpose: To provide a descriptive analysis of the epidemiology and incidence of concussions in youth lacrosse and compare the results with well-documented analyses of concussions in youth American football. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: Data on concussions in pediatric patients playing lacrosse from 2006 to 2019 were collected using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). Weighted calculations and combined participation data obtained from membership in USA Lacrosse were used to estimate injury incidence. A comparison dataset was created using the NEISS data on youth football-related concussions. The cause of concussion was categorized into player-to-player, player-to-stick, player-to-ball, or player-to-ground contact. Results: A total of 37,974 concussion injuries related to lacrosse were identified in players with a mean age of 14.5 ± 3.5 years; 70% of concussions occurred in boys. National participation in lacrosse increased from 2006 to 2011 by a mean of 10.3% annually, followed by a lower annual growth rate of 2.5% from 2012 to 2019. The overall incidence of concussion injuries increased over the study period (r = 0.314), with the incidence rate in boys being greater than that of girls from 2009 to 2013. The most common cause of concussion was player-to-ground contact for boys and player-to-ball or player-to-stick contact for girls. The mean annual concussion incidences in youth lacrosse and youth football were 443 and 355 per 100,000 participants, respectively. Conclusion: Over the study period, 16% of lacrosse injuries were diagnosed as concussions, a higher mean annual incidence per 100,000 participants than that of youth football (443 vs 355). The cause of concussion was different based on sex, with higher rates of player-to-ball or player-to-stick contact in female players versus player-to-ground contact in male players. Anxiety disorders (ADs) frequently lead to significant impairment across important domains of youth functioning. Yet until recently, clinical research and assessment have largely neglected the measurement of anxiety-related impairment. In this article, we review the evidence for five extant rating scales of youth anxiety-related impairment, guided by widely used evaluative criteria. Emerging psychometric data show the potential utility of these rating scales for achieving different assessment functions. Of the five scales, the Child Anxiety Impact Scale, particularly the parent-report version, has been the most researched one. Promising psychometric data support its use for assessing anxiety-related impairment in school, social, and family/home domains of functioning. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a life-threatening sequela of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Limited data are available regarding risk-stratification or long-term outcomes in MIS-C. This study sought to determine associations between serologic markers and severity of illness and understand long-term cardiac outcomes. This series includes 46 cases (mean age 8.1 years; 63.0% male) of MIS-C. Pearson's chi-squared analysis showed an erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) greater than 30 mm/h and 50 mm/h were disproportionately associated with pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission (χ2 = 4.44, P =.04) and use of vasopressors (χ2 = 6.06, P =.01), respectively. Ferritin less than 175.6 ng/mL was associated with use of vasopressors (χ2 = 5.28, P =.02). There was a negative correlation between ESR and ejection fraction (EF) (r = -0.39, P =.009). Most patients with abnormal echocardiograms had resolution of abnormalities within 30 days. Therefore, inflammatory markers may be helpful in predicting which patients may require specific interventions or experience cardiac dysfunction, but MIS-C does not appear to be associated with complications at 1 year. Background: There is an increasing rate of procedures being performed for concomitant injuries during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery. Few studies have examined risk factors for these associated injuries in young patients. Hypothesis: There are patient-related factors predictive of concomitant knee pathology that differ between age-based cohorts. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Natural language processing was used to extract clinical variables from available notes of patients undergoing ACL surgery between 2000 and 2020 at a single institution (5174 ACL surgeries; mean age, 17 ± 4 years; 53.1% female; accuracy, >98%). Patients were stratified to pediatric (5-13 years), adolescent (14-19 years), and young adult (20-35 years) cohorts. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors of concomitant injury to the menisci, medial collateral ligament (MCL), posterolateral corner (PLC), and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Results: Between 2000 and 2020, 54% of pediatric, 71% of adolescent, and 70% of adult patients had ≥1 concomitant soft tissue injury. In children and adolescents, increased age was consistently predictive of sustaining a concomitant injury (P <.02). Female children had increased odds of concomitant medial meniscal injury, while female adults had decreased odds (P ≤.046). Adolescent and adult female patients had decreased odds of concomitant lateral meniscal injury (P ≤.027). Female children had increased odds of injury to the MCL (P =.015), whereas female children and adolescents had decreased odds of PCL injury (P ≤.044). Adolescents undergoing revision ACL surgery had increased odds of meniscal injury (P ≤.001) and decreased odds of concomitant MCL injury (P =.028). Increased body mass index (BMI) was associated with increased odds of concomitant medial meniscal injury in all cohorts (P ≤.041), lateral meniscal injury in adults (P =.045), and PLC injury in children (P =.016). Contact injuries were associated with increased odds of MCL injury in adolescents (P =.017) and PLC injury in adolescents and adults (P <.014). Conclusion: These findings support the hypothesis, as there were multiple factors that significantly affected the risk of concomitant injuries that differed between cohorts. Increased age, BMI, and contact injury history were generally associated with increased odds of sustaining a concomitant injury, whereas female sex and revision ACL surgery had mixed effects. Further studies are essential to investigate the sex-based differences in risk for concomitant injuries and to develop tailored treatment plans that minimize the risk of secondary ACL injury. Mathematics training is a challenge for students with visual impairments (VI). However, there are few protocols to assess math skills for them, especially the content related to counting and measurement. The objective of this article was to develop and test the applicability of a protocol to assess math skills in counting and measuring for children and adolescents with VI. The work was organized into two studies. The first dealt with the development of a protocol for assessing pre-arithmetic skills and knowledge and the second study assessed its applicability. In the first study, the protocol was developed from the few papers found on a literature review. In the second study, the protocol was applied to 12 participants with VI aged 5 and 16 years. The results showed that 8 of the 12 participants had performance ranging from 83% to 100% of correct responses in the protocol application, both for counting and measuring skills. The protocol applicability and difference in participants' performance are discussed. The study concludes that the protocol can be used as a tool to assess math knowledge for children at the end of Early Childhood Education or at the beginning of Elementary School, with or without VI. Children and adolescents with a functional neurological disorder (such as functional visual disorder [FVD]) experience a lower psychological quality of life with more mental health problems than healthy controls. While there is ample research about functional neurological disorder in general, there is also a general lack of research concerning FVD and the effectiveness of treatments given to children and adolescents suffering from it. Our aim was to provide a visual overview of common topics concerning treatments of children and adolescents with an FVD. VOSviewer is a programme that extracts information (terms) from the titles and abstracts of articles to generate bibliometric networks. The results show that common subject terms are paediatrics and children. The common diagnostic terms include conversion disorder, hysterical vision disturbance, somatoform disorders, hysterical disorders, and functional (psychogenic) visual loss. Common therapeutic terms are suggestion therapy, brief psychotherapy, hypnosis, psychiatry, therapeutic processes, and suggestibility. The results give insight into the treatments that children and adolescents with FVD currently receive. Camp Abilities (CA) is an educational summer camp for children and youth with visual impairment (VI), developed in 1996 by Dr Lauren Lieberman at The State University of New York at Brockport and implemented internationally. The uniqueness of the program is that it provides opportunities for sports exposure and motor development, teaching physical education (PE) and adapted physical education (APE) for undergraduate and graduate students and research. CA has contributed to numerous publications but, to date, no systematic review has been published. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of quantitative studies conducted in CA, to document the themes investigated, to analyze the characteristics of the studies and the effects of interventions delivered, and to synthesize the results. This process identified 24 articles that examined 11 research themes. It identified several key findings, research gaps to guide future research, as well as practical implications for practitioners. Background: Despite the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) being an essential stabilizer of the knee, there is a paucity of data regarding injury management in pediatric patients. Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in outcomes after operative (OP) versus nonoperative (NOP) management of pediatric isolated (single-ligament) PCL tears. It was hypothesized that managing PCL tears operatively would lead to improved functional outcomes compared with NOP management, especially in the setting of an associated meniscal tear. Study design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Pediatric patients with an isolated PCL injury between 2006 and 2020 were identified and grouped according to whether they had a concomitant meniscal tear (PCL+M) or no meniscal tear (PCL-M). These cohorts were further sorted into OP, NOP, and nonoperative converted to operative (NOP2OP) treatment cohorts. Outcome data collected included Lysholm score, current activity level, and whether the patient returned to sports after treatment. Results: A total of 48 patients (49 knees) met study inclusion criteria (31 male, 18 female; mean age at injury, 15.6 years; age range, 8.3-18.9 years). There were 37 knees in the PCL-M cohort (30 NOP, 2 NOP2OP, and 5 OP) and 12 knees in the PCL+M cohort (4 NOP, 4 NOP2OP, and 4 OP). The mean duration of follow-up was 6.2 years (range, 2.4-15.7 years). The mean Lysholm scores were not significantly different between the OP and NOP knees in either the PCL-M cohort (P = .582) or the PCL+M cohort (P = .570); however, the PCL-M cohort overall had significantly higher scores compared with the PCL+M cohort (92.7 ± 13.0 vs 82.8 ± 18.8, respectively; P = .019). Conclusion: The pediatric patients in this series had similar functional outcomes when managed operatively or nonoperatively for their single-ligament PCL tear. When considering concomitant meniscal injury, the results indicated that children with meniscal injury had a worse outcome than those without a meniscal injury. Objective: While medical advances are enabling more children with cancer to live into adulthood, a large majority of them suffer from the late effects of treatment and about 30% experience infertility. Infertility impacts both male and female survivors complicating typical development for emerging young adults (EYAs) who typically spend this developmental period actively constructing their identities related to family and gender roles, attaining professional skills, and establishing social views. As literature is limited on identity formation and coping with infertility in young survivors, this study aimed to understand the experiences of childhood cancer survivors who are faced with infertility as a late treatment effect while reconstructing their identity. Method : A qualitative descriptive approach was used to explore the experiences and effects of childhood cancer complications on the identity development of six emerging adults (ages 18–29). Guided by the theoretical framework of identity development data were collected using semistructured interviews. Results : Four distinct themes emerged after the data analyses: restricted exploration and uncertain future, challenges to intimacy and communication, restructuring identity through redefining roles, and coping through familial support. Conclusions: Findings indicate that developmental processes of identity formation are complicated by the challenges stemming from infertility and require specific efforts to reconstruct core identity and redefine desired parental roles. Experimentation and self-discovery may be restricted for EYA cancer survivors as they reevaluate their views on intimate relationships, communication, potential professional roles, and family composition. The objective of the present study was to examine the reliability and validity of a new semi-structured interview for pediatric psychiatric disorders, which is needed as existing interviews do not cover the full range of anxiety, mood, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)-related disorders. Three hundred eleven child patients (aged 10–17) were administered the Diagnostic Interview for Anxiety, Mood, and OCD and Related Neuropsychiatric Disorders-Child and Adolescent Version (DIAMOND-KID). Of these, 65 provided interrater reliability data and 59 provided test–retest reliability data. Participants also completed self-report measures that assessed symptoms of anxiety, mood, and OCD and related disorders. Although parents/guardians could participate in the interview at the clinician's discretion, most of the initial interviews and all of the reliability interviews were based on the child's self-report. Test–retest reliability ranged from very good to excellent. Interrater reliability was more variable, with estimates for generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder in the questionable range; the other interrater reliability estimates ranged from good to very good. Convergent validity was established by significant between-group comparisons on applicable self-report measures for all diagnoses. The results of the present study indicate that the DIAMOND-KID is a promising semi-structured diagnostic interview for 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in pediatric populations. Objectives: Childhood trauma is common and associated with mental ill health. While high rates of trauma are observed across individual disorders, there is evidence that trauma is associated with an admixture of affective, anxiety and psychotic symptoms in adults. Given that early onset of mental disorder and trauma exposure herald poor outcomes, it is important to examine trauma prevalence rates in youth mental health services and to determine whether this trauma-related clustering is present in help-seeking young people. Methods: We used data from the Transitions Study, a longitudinal investigation of young people attending headspace youth mental health services in Australia between January 2011 and August 2012. Participants were 775 young people aged 12–25. Childhood trauma was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Multinomial regression was used to assess whether reported childhood trauma was more strongly associated with the co-occurrence of depression, anxiety, mania and psychosis symptoms than with any one in isolation. Results: Approximately 84% of participants reported some form of abuse (emotional: 68%; physical: 32%; sexual: 22%) or neglect (emotional: 65%; physical: 46%). Exposure to multiple trauma types was common. Childhood trauma was significantly associated with each symptom domain. More severe childhood trauma was more strongly associated with the co-occurrence of symptoms than with any one symptom domain in isolation, such that more severely trauma-exposed young people were more likely to experience increased symptom clustering. Conclusions: Childhood trauma is pervasive in youth mental health services and associated with a symptom profile that cuts across traditional diagnostic boundaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myths and misconceptions surrounding the nature of sexual assault play a role in shaping the perceptions of victims as credible and perpetrators as culpable. Defense attorneys often capitalize on myths in court as an element of their defense strategies. Researchers have established that myths about both rape generally, and child sexual abuse (CSA) specifically, appear with regularity in criminal trials of children who have made an allegation of CSA. Yet no work has systematically and quantitatively examined the impact of a child's age on the probability that attorneys will ask a myth-consistent question in criminal trials of CSA. In the current study, we examine 6,384 lines of questioning across 134 criminal trials of CSA to assess whether defense attorneys employ developmentally sensitive strategies when asking children questions that draw upon myths about sexual violence (CSA myths: disclosure myths, extent of harm, a child's positive relationship with their perpetrator, and the presence of witnesses; Rape myths: force and resistance, motives to lie, victim precipitation, and character issues). We found that attorneys did not vary their use of CSA myths by the age of the child. However, the probability that a child would receive a rape myth -consistent line of questioning, increased with a child's age. This work suggests that attorneys are, at times, strategic in their use of myths and employ these adult rape myths in ways that are plausible, purposeful, and likely impactful. The strategic use of these questions may acknowledge young children's limited development but may place too great a demand on older children's developmental capacities.
