Our objective was to test a theoretical model that explains quality of life as a function of the intrusiveness of illness encroaching on the different domains of one’s life. The intrusiveness of illness is explained not only by disease and treatment related factors, but also by one’s psychological and social resources (Devins, 1994). To investigate this issue, a sample of 336 women aged 50 and under, recently diagnosed with breast cancer were interviewed in their homes. Consistent with Devins’ model, intrusiveness of illness mediated the effect of disease and treatment factors on quality of life. Contrary to his model, some treatment factors also had direct effects while social and psychological factors had only direct effects on quality of life. The paper explores the emergence and proliferation of "coworking spaces". Driven by empirical observations during the last 10 years, the paper examines the analytical potential of the concept "fluid objects" to explain the global rise of coworking spaces. With remarkable speed, coworking spaces emerged worldwide during the last 15 years and receive enormous attention from researchers, policy‐makers, and the public. However, researchers still struggle to define coworking spaces and a closer look into the field reveals the diversity and heterogeneity of these facilities. How is it that such different places are nevertheless recognised as belonging to the same phenomenon? Within Science and Technology Studies (STS), the notion of "fluid objects" has been developed to describe entities obtaining their strength through adaptability and flexibility. The paper argues that fluidity is a useful conceptual foundation to better understand the emergence and proliferation of coworking spaces. The primary conceptual ideas presented in this paper are enhanced with empirical data, collected from different coworking spaces in Berlin, Amsterdam, and North Rhine‐Westphalia. The geography of education literature has demonstrated remarkable similarities in school choice strategies across different educational and spatial contexts. The literature finds that school choice strategies of the middle classes rely on deploying different forms of capital (economic, social, and cultural). At the same time, it is evident that the specific geography and institutional idiosyncrasies of the educational landscape are navigated in locally specific ways that are not just classed but also strongly intersect with ethnicity/race. In most contexts moving house plays a central role in school choice. However, residential relocation as part of school choice strategies is highly contingent on national and local regulations of school allocation and enrolment. Investigating the case of the metropolitan area of Amsterdam, this paper uses longitudinal individual, geo‐coded register data to study the socio‐spatial school choice strategies of an entire cohort of first‐born children (2012) in a free‐school choice landscape. Employing an analysis of the interconnections of residential relocation and school choice, this paper uses multinomial logit models to assess how school is differentiated by social class and migration background and how it is related to residential (re)location. It finds that school choice strategies are differentiated by both class and ethnicity, but also very strongly depend on residential context. Remarkably, the paper finds that while a substantial number of highly educated, high‐income parents move and enrol their children in homogeneous middle‐class schools, a majority of households do not move and hence navigate the school landscape in which they find themselves. It suggests that school choice policies indeed reduce the need for residential relocation, but at the same time are conducive to school segregation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper interrogates the performative and affective aspects of relational place‐making processes by which people construct the everyday geographies of public space. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in and around an outdoor retail market in Amsterdam, the research findings show that the hegemonic frame of this public space is deeply racialised, mediating the way in which traders, market managers, and visitors encounter one another on a daily basis. By drawing on a shift from a discursive conception of relational place‐making to a performative and affective one, the results show how racialised place frames come into being through day‐to‐day performative practices, and how this is confirmed and brokered by people confronted with racialised place discourses. The findings on traders social networks through which they sustain access to public space highlight the importance of attending to the affective dimensions of place‐making in academic work focused on place politics. This paper presents a personal, selective, and sometimes critical retrospective of the history of ABC transporters in multidrug resistance (MDR) of cancer cells, overrepresenting discoveries of some early pioneers, long forgotten, and highlights of research in Amsterdam, mainly focussing on discoveries made with disruptions of ABC genes in mice (KO mice) and on the role of ABC transporters in causing drug resistance in a mouse model of mammary cancer. Does legitimating sinful activities have a cost? This paper examines the relationship between housing demand and overt prostitution in Amsterdam. In our empirical design, we exploit the spatial discontinuity in the location of brothel windows created by canals, combined with a policy that forcibly closed some of the windows near these canals. To pin down their effect on housing prices, we apply a difference‐in‐discontinuity (DiD) estimator, which controls for the precise location of brothel windows and the effect of other policies and local developments. Our results show that the housing prices are discontinuous at the bordering canals, and this discontinuity nearly disappears after closures. The discontinuity is also found to decrease with the distance to brothels, disappearing after 300 yards. Our estimates indicate that homes right next to sex workers were 30 percent cheaper before the closures. This result seems unrelated to the presence of other businesses, such as bars and cannabis shops. Instead, the price discount is partly explained by petty crimes. However, 73 percent of the effect remains unexplained after controlling for many forms of crime and risk perception. Our findings suggest that households tend to be against the visible presence of sex workers and related nuisances, reaffirming their marginalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

European cities have responded differently to the growing number of short‐term rentals (such as Airbnb) and proposed a variety of regulations, although little is known about their efficiency. This paper contributes to filling the gap by analyzing both policy documents and spatial distributions of Airbnb listings between 2015 and 2020 using Amsterdam, Berlin, and London as case studies. We also compare the results with those of nine other European capitals. Our results show that cities follow highly individualized approaches. According to the strictness of each regulation, we see different intensities in the growth (and drop) of Airbnb listings, the share of multi‐hosts, and the share of apartments withdrawn from the regular housing market. There is also a spatial dispersion of listings from the center to the periphery. Our numbers insinuate that dynamically changing regulations force hosts to adapt continuously–which tames an uncontrolled proliferation, but more research is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a static diagnostic load testing and measurement campaign of a reinforced concrete road bridge in Amsterdam. We consider 29 vertical translation sensors and 37 strain sensors. Multiple Bayesian parameter estimations are performed to estimate two structural and two load parameters of a three‐dimensional finite element (FE) model. The structural parameters are the concrete elastic modulus of the deck and the rotational spring stiffness at the piers. The load (truck) parameters are the load mass and position, which are estimated from separate measurements. We found that estimating (updating) the two selected structural parameters considerably improves the vertical translation model prediction accuracy over the FE model that was built before the measurement campaign, that is, the R2 score increases from 0.90 to 0.98. Moreover, the load (truck) mass and position parameters can be estimated with high accuracy and high precision. When all measurements are used, the load mass and position are estimated with an error, respectively, less than 1.5 tonnes and 0.5 m with respect to the ground truth. On the negative side: when only certain strain measurements are used, the 90% posterior credible interval is about 3 m and 10 tonnes off the ground truth. Although the results are promising, they are restricted to the considered case and, more importantly, to operational loading conditions where the loading is well controlled. In this paper, we present our novel autonomous surface vessel platform, a full‐scale Roboat for urban transportation. This 4‐m‐long Roboat is designed with six seats and can carry a payload of up to 1000 kg. Roboat has two main thrusters for cruising and two tunnel thrusters to accommodate docking and interconnectivity between Roboats. We build an adaptive nonlinear model predictive controller for trajectory tracking to account for payload changes while transporting passengers. We use a sparse directed graph to represent the canal topological map and then find the most time‐efficient global path in a city‐scale environment using the A* ${A}^{* }$ algorithm. We then employ a multiobjective algorithm's lexicographic search to generate an obstacle‐free path using a point‐cloud projected two‐dimensional occupancy grid map. We also develop a docking mechanism to allow Roboat to "grasp" the docking station. Extensive experiments in Amsterdam waterways demonstrate that Roboat can (1) successfully track the optimal trajectories generated by the planner with varying numbers of passengers on board; (2) autonomously dock to the station without human intervention; (3) execute an autonomous water taxi task where it docks to pick up passengers, drive passengers to the destination while planning its path to avoid obstacles, and finally dock to drop off passengers. Urban waste management is one of the most complex and urgent challenges that the society faces. In this paper, an innovative research methodology is proposed, introducing a systemic approach to circular waste management strategy‐making. Urban waste management is a complex system that needs to be tackled in a holistic, yet context‐specific manner. To produce truly integrative outcomes, this paper provides insight into the system as a whole, its components and the relationships between them, using specific tools, to form the basis for a circular strategy. A toolbox is presented for transforming the current linear and fragmented waste management processes into integrative and circular strategies. The proposed integrative methodology encompassing outline, multipillar mapping, and synthesis can be applied to different locations and waste streams. The concept is subsequently demonstrated through a case study focusing on the municipality of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and the management of organic waste streams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the interplay between regime and niche actors in implementing the circular economy through mediation by transition brokers. The study is based on 'action research' carried out in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. Innovation science is adopted as theoretical approach. First, the analysis shows that more ambitious initiatives could be taken than by individual market actors. Whether these circular initiatives represent just incremental change—as other studies suggest—cannot be concluded. Rather, it is plausible to conceptualise the transition process as a continuous transformational change. Second, in creating circular initiatives, the interplay between regime and niche actors was evident but varied. Actors could team up more easily where their interests aligned. This conclusion corresponds with recent innovation literature, which emphasises the importance of linkages between processes at niche, regime and landscape levels. Before generalising the results, similar studies in other regional contexts would be valuable. Short informative: In moving to a circular economy, the willingness of market actors to innovate is crucial.Real‐life experiments on the implementation of circular initiatives built by market actors at local level through the mediation of independent intermediaries (here called 'transition brokers') are scarce. In times of decreasing public funding, cultural institutions such as museums increasingly develop new stakeholder management practices to build a different or more diversified support base. Recently, membership programs have especially been gaining popularity. In this paper, we adopt a relationship value approach to study the poorly understood behaviors of members that can benefit museums beyond membership fees. In particular, we focus on the extent to which membership level and the perceived prestige of the museum drive value co‐creation through prestige leveraging. We study this by using a sample of 430 members and non‐members of the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam. We find that membership level is positively related with cross‐buying behavior at the museum store and restaurant, and recommending the museum. In addition, these value creating behaviors are mediated by members leveraging the museum's prestige in their social environment. In contrast, we find a negative relationship between membership level and recruiting new members into the program, which could be explained by status dilution effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies residential segregation in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and makes three contributions to the recent debates on segregation. First, both ethnic and socio‐economic segregation are studied by comparing isolation index scores for both individual indicators and their interactions. Second, neighbourhoods are defined as scalable individualised units, which allows for comparisons across spatial scales. Third, the paper adopts a longitudinal approach by covering three different time points, which enables us to get a grip on segregation trends. The results indicate that there are notable differences in segregation levels and trends between the applied segregation indicators. Ethnic segregation remained largely stable over the 2003–14 period, whereas the indicators of socio‐economic segregation have slightly changed, but all in different directions. Only for tertiary education segregation has increased over the entire period. The Dutch welfare system, the well‐dispersed and socially‐mixed social housing sector and gentrification help to explain these developments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current scientific debate on algorithms in the public sector is dominated by a focus on technology rather than organizational patterns. This paper extends our understanding of these patterns by studying the algorithmization of bureaucratic organizations, which is the process in which an organization rearranges its working routines around the use of algorithms. To explore the algorithmization of bureaucratic organizations, we conducted a comparative empirical analysis of predictive policing in Berlin (Germany) and Amsterdam (Netherlands) through in‐depth qualitative research. Our study identified two emergent patterns: the 'algorithmic cage' (Berlin, more hierarchical control) and the 'algorithmic colleague' (Amsterdam, room for professional judgment). These patterns result from administrative cultures and reinforce existing patterns of organization. The study highlights that two patterns of algorithmization of government bureaucracy can be identified and that these patterns depend on dominant social norms and interpretations rather than the technological features of algorithmic systems. This Windows on the Netherlands addresses the economic geography of commodity trade by providing insights from two Dutch port cities: Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It is argued that commodity traders provide an empirical site for uncovering the missing links between research on world cities on the one hand, and global commodity chains on the other. Commodity trading is compelling as it is linked both with the financial sector (financing and paper trade) and with the production and distribution of commodities (storage and transportation). However, these two activities do not necessarily need to be in geographical proximity. Rotterdam and Amsterdam handle large volumes of commodities flowing through their ports, but the trading desks of the large commodity houses handle the trade transactions. There is a strong presence of the world's largest commodity traders in the Netherlands, which include not only the port-based physicaloperational functions but also the trading desks, treasuries and holding companies. In many postindustrial cities in the Global North, increasing families seem to choose to stay in the city rather than move to the suburbs. This might imply that residential preferences of young families shift from suburban to more urban. In this paper, the moving behaviour of young families in the four largest cities in the Netherlands is analysed. The moving behaviour is measured with register data and analysed with the Oaxaca‐Blinder decomposition technique and with logistic regression techniques. The results show that young families broken down by residential biography and income have very different moving behaviours in their choice for staying in the city or moving to the region around the city. The changes in the outmigration of young families from the city to the region are not necessarily related to changing residential preferences, but more related to changes in the composition within the group of young families. The growth of higher‐income families in cities seem to be primarily explained by the changing composition of city dwellers before family formation and not so much by a more urban orientation in their moving behaviour. Changes in moving patterns through time and the differences between the four cities seem to be related to the differences in the urban economy and housing supply. Especially in Amsterdam, the lack of larger family home drives young families to the suburbs. When cities and suburban regions want to be attractive for young families, the size of the available dwellings is the most important aspect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The construction of new, purpose‐built mosques in Europe often stirs a number of controversies. This paper looks at one such project: a new mosque building in Almere, a town near Amsterdam. It focuses on two kinds of controversies: discussions between various kinds of mosque committee members about aesthetic preferences and how they relate to members' views about Islam in Europe, and neighborhood protests against the new mosque. Although the latter kind of conflicts have attracted some scholarly attention, most of this work treats these conflicts as discursive controversies and gives little attention to the material form. On the other hand, there is a new kind of literature on creativity and architectural design that emphasizes material processes but fails to analyze how these processes are related to larger political issues. By focusing on the temporal aspects of material processes, particularly the attention to form, I seek to merge these two approaches in order to analyze the mosque controversies as at once material and political. In the Dutch city of IJmuiden, a new sea lock is currently under construction. With a lock chamber of 500 m long and 70 m wide, it will be the largest lock in the world. The latest generation of seagoing vessels will be able to access the harbour of Amsterdam using this lock. At the same time, at an altitude of 8.85 meters above sea level, the Netherlands are protected from the rising sea water for the next two centuries. The lock must be constructed in between of the existing operational locks. Because of this lack of space, the water levelling system is incorporate in the rolling gates. The required performance of the gates as well as the drive mechanism, in terms of reliability, availability, maintainability, safety and robustness), was highly governing during the design process, and resulted in a final design that cannot be described as standard. Ethnic entrepreneurship has become a popular concept in a modern multi-cultural society in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This paper seeks to offer an overview of the potential of ethnic entrepreneurship for solving inter alia the structural unemployment problems of ethnic groups in cities. There is a general lack of empirical evidence on this issue in the current literature. The present paper aims to fill this gap by addressing in particular the critical success conditions for ethnic entrepreneurs. The focus of the research is on variations in success across three ethnic groups in the Amsterdam area. By means of structured personal interviews with many ethnic entrepreneurs, a systematic qualitative data base was created. The paper sets out to identify empirically the driving forces for business success, such as education or the role of informal networks. The explanatory framework deployed for the identification of these qualitative success factors for distinct ethnic groups is based on a particular, recently developed artificial intelligence method, viz. rough set analysis. This multidimensional classification approach appears to be able to identify various important factors for the motivation and performance of ethnic enterprises. Two major findings emerge from this investigation: (i) performance conditions vary across ethnic groups, and (ii) informal networks are crucial for business success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

City governments worldwide have embraced urban agriculture, including community gardening, for the multiple societal benefits which they promise. Many academic studies have also emphasised and celebrated the benefits of community gardening but the debate surrounding it increasingly takes a more critical stance by also paying attention to the societal drawbacks. This paper aims to further enrich this more critical debate by analysing processes of social inclusion and social exclusion in and around the community garden in the Wijsgeren neighbourhood of Amsterdam. By looking at the practices and experiences of both gardeners and non‐gardeners, processes of inclusion and exclusion are unravelled in terms of ownership and membership of the community garden. Research shows that female participation rates are lower in suburbs than in urban areas. In this paper we explore the residential patterns of the gender division of family households at the level of the neighbourhood. We draw on national register data (SSB) to define various arrangements of the way in which parents with dependent children divide paid work. These household arrangements are plotted onto maps to sketch the geography of division of paid work in Amsterdam. Our findings show that family households with specific gender divisions of paid work tend to cluster in specific residential environments: (1) families who work with a traditional division of labour are concentrated in social-housing estates in neighbourhoods with high shares of non-Western minorities; (2) one-and-a-half earner families are clustered in the most suburban parts of the city; and (3) symmetrical and female-breadwinner households concentrate in central gentrification areas of the city. Abstract: This paper analyses new firm formation in the Amsterdam restaurant industry, on the basis of an in‐depth research of 37 new restaurants, through the lens of the theory of evolutionary economic geography. The findings show that restaurateur‐chefs largely replicate the kitchen of their parent firms whereas restaurateur‐managers can more easily switch to a different type of kitchen. It means that replication of individual knowledge and skills are more important than replication of routines. Restaurateurs who came from other related industries did not bring something special from their former jobs in their restaurants. In addition, new restaurants benefit differently from extra‐firm relations (with respect to attracting capital, monitoring other restaurants, finding chefs and cooks, relations with suppliers and media) during their start‐up process and thereafter. ‘Amsterdam is standing on Norway’– this was a popular saying in the Dutch Republic of the seventeenth century. There was more than one inflection to the phrase. Amsterdam was, in the first instance, built atop a subterranean forest of Norwegian origin. But southern Norway was also a vital resource zone, subordinated to Amsterdam-based capital. This paper follows the movement of strategic commodity frontiers within early modern Europe from the standpoint of capitalism as world-ecology, joining in dialectical unity the production of capital and the production of nature. Our geographical focus is trained upon the emergence of the Global North Atlantic, that zone providing the strategic raw materials and food supplies indispensable to the consolidation of capitalism – timber, naval stores, metals, cereals, fish and whales. I argue for a broader geographical perspective on these movements, one capable of revealing the dialectical interplay of frontiers on all sides of the Atlantic. From its command posts in Amsterdam, Dutch capital deployed American silver in the creation of successive frontiers within Europe, transforming Scandinavian and Baltic regions. The frontier character of these transformations was decisive, premised on drawing readily exploitable supplies of land and labour power into the orbit of capital. We see in northern Europe precisely what we see in the Americas – a pattern of commodity-centred environmental transformation, and thence relative ecological exhaustion, from which the only escape was renewed global conquest and ever-wider cycles of combined and uneven development. This paper uses a data set collected among inhabitants of Amsterdam, to study whether wages of prime-age male workers are affected by cannabis use. The analysis shows that recent cannabis use has a negative effect on wages. The size of the wage effect depends on the age of onset. Gentrification is now a common feature of contemporary cities. The process has extended its spatial reach from urban cores into neighbourhoods previously deemed unlikely to gentrify. More recently, scholars have identified an intensifying suburbanisation of poverty reshaping socio‐spatial inequalities. In this paper we argue that it is increasingly urgent to integrate analyses of gentrification with those on the suburbanisation of poverty. The two processes are fundamentally related through the displacement and exclusion of disadvantaged populations. Drawing on Dutch full‐population register data for the 2005–2015 period, we empirically illustrate the existence of suburbanising poverty alongside urban gentrification in the urban regions of Amsterdam and Utrecht. We further show these are far from uniform processes, eschewing urban–suburban dichotomies. In addition, we find regional differences in the intensity and spatial reach of both gentrification and poverty suburbanisation. Spatial trends are more pronounced in the Amsterdam region, where low‐income households are pushed to the furthest parts of the region. By way of conclusion, we outline an agenda for future research. This paper explores the shifting geography of the port-city interface in The Netherlands since the mid 1970s, and assesses its current scene. With an eye on port-urban governance and planning, we provide a dynamic account of the forces that have played a major role in the implementation of waterfront redevelopment schemes in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Our account shows that the power balance between the port authority, the municipal planning office, and the users of the port has shifted. This has compelled urban planners in both port cities to adopt a more incremental waterfront development strategy than they had anticipated, and has given port users more influence on the plans for the current port-city interface. With a comparably high degree of de-commodification in the urban housing market, Amsterdam has been long considered a prime example of a ' European city' and a 'just city'. This paper looks at how the city's housing tenure sectors have changed since the 1990s due to neo-liberalisation processes and specifies effects for housing conditions of the poor. It highlights how restructuring has been driven by policy changes at different scales, and analyses the effects of reform on issues of accessibility and affordability. We identify a gap between insiders and outsiders, with affordability for the poor inside the system not yet deteriorating, but accessibility for poor outsiders emerging as a key problem. This paper analyzes the rise and decline of social movements in Amsterdam and Paris, focusing in particular on the organizations of left-wing immigrant workers. These organizations performed crucial roles for new social movements in the 1970s and 1980s but were isolated and coopted in the 1990s and early 2000s. To explain why this is so, we engage in a dialogue with Jacques Rancière and develop an understanding of cities as strategic sites for both politicization and policing. Cities serve as sites of politicization because they are incubators of the relational conduits that enable activists from different sectors to engage with one another's struggles and look beyond narrow temporal and spatial horizons. However, cities also serve as sites of policing because authorities constantly attempt to reconfigure governmental arrangements in such a way that civil society serves as an extension of the government and comes to fulfill an instrumental role in the development and implementation of policy. Just as politicizing implies the widening of temporal and spatial horizons, policing implies the narrowing of such horizons. The analysis shows the social movements of the 1960s lost steam in two of the major hubs of the new left and reveals some of the more universal mechanisms through which cities generate or quell dissent. Introduction: Women with an abnormally high pelvic floor muscle tone may have a clinical presentation that is complex, involving urinary, anorectal and/or sexual dysfunction, genital/pelvic pain and psychological distress. The Amsterdam Hyperactive Pelvic Floor Scale (AHPFS) is a Dutch 30‐item condition‐specific self‐report questionnaire developed to measure these complex pelvic pain symptoms. The aim of this study was to translate the Dutch version into Norwegian, to assess the psychometric properties, and to present a valid factor structure. Material and methods: Translation, back‐translation and a review of the back‐translated version were performed. Thereafter, a pilot test including feedback from six clinical experts and cognitive interviews with 11 patients from the target group was conducted. Next, a field test was performed among women who were (1) patients at the gynecological outpatient clinic/pelvic floor physiotherapist at St. Olav's Hospital, (2) members of the Vulvodynia or the Endometriosis Patient Associations or (3) female students and employees from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in a web‐based survey. To ensure a sample with symptomatic women, only women who scored ≥11 according to the Dutch prespecified factor structure were included in the statistical analyses (n = 232). Results: Content/face validity demonstrated that the questionnaire was perceived as relevant, comprehensive and understandable. Some adjustments in the instructions of the questionnaire and the response categories were made, which lead to the Norwegian translation ACPPS‐30. Assessment of the questionnaire's dimensionality revealed a five‐factor structure similar to the original Dutch Amsterdam Hyperactive Pelvic Floor Scale (AHPFS) but without the Urinary tract infection factor and seven other items. The translated and modified ACPPS‐16 total score and subscales correlated as expected with scales measuring similar conditions. Test–retest reliability demonstrated good stability for scales (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.85–0.93) and single items (weighted kappa values from 0.34 to 0.90). Conclusions: A modified Norwegian version ACPPS‐30 was presented, in addition to a shorter version with only 16 of the translated items distributed among five factors similar to the original Dutch version (ACPPS‐16). Both versions proved to be valid, stable and reliable tools to investigate complex pelvic pain symptoms possibly due to an abnormally high‐toned pelvic floor muscle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the effects of gentrification through the lens of the interactions and perceptions which can be found in local, neighbourhood pubs. By interviewing predominantly Dutch, non-gentrifying customers in the rapidly gentrifying Indische Buurt neighbourhood in Amsterdam, we uncovered discourses which are both welcoming to, and cautious of the process. Three themes were examined: changes in the neighbourhood, changes in the role of pubs in daily life and changes in the interactions within pubs. In many respects, the process of gentrification is welcomed because it represents something ' Dutch' coming into the neighbourhood after years of immigration. Divisions between gentrifiers and non-gentrifiers are not experienced as starkly as is often portrayed in the literature; our respondents tended to be much more ambivalent than other non-gentrifying groups portrayed in studies elsewhere. This may be due to the more managed-nature of Dutch gentrification. However, there is a sense that one's pub is impervious to the changes in the rest of the neighbourhood, a discourse which must be taken into account when drawing any long-term conclusions from this study. Like many other governments, the Dutch government has simultaneously pursued the contradictory goals of liberalising the housing market and countering the concentration of low-income groups. This paper discusses how the tension between promoting market forces and countering segregation has played out, using Amsterdam as a case study. The findings suggest that the policy may have mitigated but did not prevent a deepening division between the city's increasingly privileged core and its periphery. Public agencies typically collect statistical databases on population, housing, economic activities and various other indicators. In their existing form, these databases cannot be directly adopted for planning and policy formulation, as they need to be tailored to the issue for which information is required. The specific problem addressed in this article is how to process and visualise small-area data, in our case referring to the Dutch 6-digit postcode, to provide detailed information for areas that are normally difficult to target in policy terms because they do not relate to the identifiable administrative entities that planners and politicians are accustomed to. Therefore a methodology is presented that identifies spatial concentrations based on the underlying data using geographical information systems (GIS). Emphasis is placed on the technical characteristics of this method, which has been applied in a number of urban studies, and on the advantages and disadvantages for further utilisation. Using the Amsterdam City Monitor as a case study, this paper illustrates how to produce detailed maps of urban dynamics within a city to support local policy and planning. It also shows that the presented method of mapping spatial concentrations can be applied to a variety of urban issues, and complements the common practice of using intensity classes to compare places. The question of how to organize collaborative problem solving efforts when collective action is necessary has received considerable attention in the scientific literature. However, many such contributions neglect the role of the governance system in which processes evolve. These systems are complex, and the actors involved have a high degree of self-organizing capacity at their disposal. Actors create and recreate the rules of the game, draw and redraw boundaries, and develop and redevelop patterns of interaction. The governance of the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol demonstrates the complexity of a compounded governance system and the influence this has on collaborative problem solving. In this paper, we analyse two attempts to organize collaborative problem-solving efforts. Although the government assumed itself to be in charge, we demonstrate that the collaborative problem-solving efforts are seriously hampered by the self-organizing capacity of actors in neighbouring subsystems. Objective To estimate the contribution of pre-pregnancy excessive weight to the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes and to detect the differences in these contributions between different ethnic groups. Design Prospective multi-ethnic community-based cohort study. Setting The prevalence of excessive weight is increasing and in general higher in immigrant groups in many industrialised countries. Maternal excessive weight, like smoking during pregnancy, is an important risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Population A total of 8266 pregnant women, living in the Netherlands, were included in the ABCD study between January 2003 and March 2004. Methods After applying the exclusion criteria, the analysis included 7871 pregnancies. Binomial log-linear regression analyses were performed to estimate relative risks (RRs) expressing the association between overweight/obesity and small-for-gestational-age (SGA), large-for-gestational-age (LGA), preterm birth (PTB; <37 weeks of gestation) and extreme PTB (<32 weeks of gestation), controlling for parity, maternal age, education level and smoking. Next, the RRs were used to estimate population attributive fractions (PAF) for Amsterdam and separately for several ethnic groups. Main outcome measures The RRs and PAFs. Results The PAFs for overweight/obesity were: SGA −4.9%, LGA 15.3%, PTB 6.6% and extreme PTB 22.0%. In absolute terms, this corresponds to −47 SGA infants, 126 LGA infants, 35 PTB and 20 extreme PTB per year in Amsterdam. Except for SGA, these PAFs were higher than those for smoking (6.2%, −3.9%, 5.5% and 10.6%, respectively). The contribution of overweight/obesity to LGA and PTB was higher in non-Western immigrant groups. Conclusions Overweight/obesity has become an important contributor to the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes in Amsterdam. For most outcomes, these contributions are larger than those for smoking. Development of special obesity prevention programmes for young women is required, especially focused on immigrant groups. Although planned as the 'City of Tomorrow', the Bijlmer district in Amsterdam quickly became the quintessential symbol of urban decline. Today, even with half of the planned renewal of the Bijlmer completed, the alleged success of this urban revitalisation programme is questionable. Parts of the black middle class did not move out and some are even returning to the Bijlmer; the combination is producing a type of 'black gentrification', which forces the 'undesirables' like drug users, homeless people and undocumented immigrants to leave. This revanchist renewal not only benefits the middle and lower-class population of the district, but it also serves the interests of private developers. European revanchism makes the city safe for corporate investment and aims to restore social order as well as stimulating the development of a strong middle class. This paper demonstrates how hard revanchist policies are demanded not only by private developers but also by the middle and lower classes, and they exist alongside soft 'caring' policies, even for the 'undesirables'. The Amsterdam Zuidas area is planned to become a large multi-functional development area with a mix of offices, dwellings and facilities. As part of a broader empirical investigation, the valuation of multi-functional land use of this mega-project by a specific class of stakeholders, namely, commercial investors, is examined in this paper. We are particularly interested in the expected impact of locational characteristics on urban land rent in the area. The study is based on an extensive interview questionnaire, in which future development scenarios and spatial externalities are also investigated. The study reveals that the expectations of investors are driven by a complex set of factors. Particularly important are accessibility and image. A wide variety of segregation measures are used in scientific research. However, the usual measures are not suitable for use at micro-geographical scale level, for example, to evaluate the magnitude of spatial attraction or separation between pairs of ethnic groups within multi-ethnic residential neighbourhoods in Amsterdam. In this paper we examine the social importance of possessing such knowledge for these areas, we discuss the deficiencies of the usual segregation measures as regards this level of analysis, and we draw attention to a recently developed spatial segregation measure, the so-called M measure, which does happen to be suitable for this goal. We apply the M measure to some of these residential neighbourhoods which existed in Amsterdam on 1 January 2003. The conclusion is that although neighbourhoods can have a very similar ethnic mix, the spatial attraction or avoidance between certain pairs of groups may be quite different between these neighbourhoods. In this paper we empirically examined two explanatory mechanisms for educational inequality: cultural reproduction and relative risk aversion, using survey data taken from secondary school pupils in Amsterdam. Cultural reproduction theory seeks to explain class variations in schooling by cultural differences between social classes. Relative risk aversion theory argues that educational inequalities can be understood by between-class variation in the necessity of pursuing education at branching points in order to avoid downward mobility. We showed that class variations in early demonstrated ability are for a substantial part cultural: cultural capital – measured by parental involvement in highbrow culture – affected school performance at the primary and secondary level. However, relative risk aversion – operationalized by being concerned with downward mobility – strongly affects schooling ambitions, whereas cultural capital had no effect. Thus, we conclude that ‘primary effects’ of social origin on schooling outcomes are manifested through cultural capital and not through relative risk aversion (in addition to other potential sources of class variations such as genetics). Relative risk aversion, and not cultural capital, affects schooling ambitions, which is relevant for our understanding of secondary effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

He studied medicine in Amsterdam and started his internship at the pharmacology laboratory for 4 months. In 1955, the biochemistry department at the university had been taken over by a professor from Australia. He then applied and was hired as an unpaid volunteer.

This paper examines the spatial transformation of the city from children’s point of view. Three important daily living domains – children’s outdoor play spaces, leisure centres and caring institutions – are examined. Empirical findings are made from studies in Amsterdam, where new urban developments affecting children are most apparent in the Netherlands. Conclusions show that developments are both diverse and paradoxical. On the one hand, we see processes that progressively contribute towards the exclusion of children from urban public space. Safety considerations underpin these processes heavily. Children’s marginal position in the public domain is further reinforced in the planning and design of new residential areas. Children do not seem to be a factor that merits consideration. On the other hand, never before has so much attention been paid to children. Adults’ efforts to give due consideration to children’s position lead to the creation of many new domains especially created for children. These give children a ‘face’ in the city, but these spaces are characterised by privatisation, institutionalisation and segregation. In the context of the Netherlands it is not altogether clear what shape the future will take, but it seems to be most likely that indicated developments will continue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ongoing urbanization highlights the need for a better understanding and high resolution modelling of the urban climate. In this study, we combine rural observations by WMO surface stations, weather radar data and urban crowd‐sourced observations with very fine‐scale modelling efforts for Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As a model, we use the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale model with 3D variational data assimilation at a 100‐m resolution in the innermost model domain. In order to enable the assimilation of observations within the urban canopy, we develop a scheme to reduce urban temperature biases by adjusting urban fabric temperatures. The scheme is tested against independent urban observations for the summer month of July 2014 and specifically for a hot period and an extreme precipitation event. We find data assimilation reduces biases in temperature and wind speed. Within the city, the most significant improvement is the reduction of negative temperature biases during clear nights, which implies a better prediction of the Urban Heat Island (UHI). Concerning precipitation, the fractional skill score improves incrementally when additional observations are assimilated, and the largest impact is seen from the assimilation of weather radar observations.
