LITERATURE competitions , *VALUES (Ethics) , *LITERARY form , *ART , *ELEMENTARY schools , *SCHOOL children , *COOPERATION - Abstract
This study offers a synthesis of expressed values within texts of Croatian elementary school pupils in literary works of poetry, prose, and plays at the competition for literary and visual art works of pupils, titled »Stjepan Kranjčić«; abbreviatedly named »Dječji Kranjčić« (Children's Kranjčić). The values within first ten proceedings of most successful works of the competition (2012 -2021) have been analysed. A quantitative and a qualitative analysis has been carried out. For the purposes of the quantitative analysis of values, the protocol that contained seven classified categories of values and their subcategories was used. In the process of quantitative analysis of the data, statistical procedures of determining frequencies and percentages were used, followed by a determination of the number of published children's literary works in all ten proceedings according to the year of publication, as well as the representation of Christian and universal values in children's literary works, and frequency of appearance of certain values in subcategories. The quantitative analysis of contents of children's literary works allowed us to identify values in the three aforementioned literary genres. On the basis of the sample of 599 published works (poetry 270, prose 275, plays 54), it has been concluded that elementary school pupils expressed predominantly spiritual values such as piety, holiness, and true faith, which confirms the research hypothesis, while the second place of preferred values has been taken by universal values: love, family, home country, good ness. The study draws attention to an excellent example of cooperation between school and association, which, when working together, can have an extremely important role in the development of positive values in upbringing of Croatian youth. CATHOLIC schools , *PUBLIC schools , *CITIES & towns , *URBAN schools , *SCHOOL year , *SCHOOL children - Abstract
The article analyses and compares data on unjustified absences of pupils from classes in twelve Catholic and twelve public grammar schools in Croatia. The study involved 87 first-year grammar school classes in which there were 1990 pupils at the end of the 2019/2020 school year. In total twelve Catholic grammar schools are situated in eleven cities and ten regions. For the purpose of comparison by using the method of random selection, twelve public grammar school from these cities and regions were added to the sample. The study aimed at determining whether there is a statistically relevant difference in the number of unjustified absences of pupils from classes in public as opposed to Catholic grammar schools, and, if so, to possibly link the difference to value profiles of the two kinds of schools, as well as to the perspective of logopedagogy. The study also took into account the difference in terms of the sex of pupils and in terms of the region in which particular schools is located. The results of the study indicate that there is a statistically relevant difference between the number of unjustified absences of pupils from classes in favour of Catholic grammar schools. Additionally, boys have more unjustified absences than girls in the total sample, as well as in the sample of pupils from public schools, while in Catholic grammar schools there was no statistically relevant difference in terms of the sex of pupils. A statistically relevant difference in the number of unjustified absences between regions has also been shown. The discussion of results in the light of the perspective of logopedagogy offers a new aspect of research to educational-upbringing efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHILDREN'S books , *READING promotion , *CHILDREN'S literature , *LIBRARY administration , *LITERARY prizes , *CRITICAL thinking , *SCHOOL children - Abstract
Purpose. The aim of this paper is to present the activities of the Children's Jury of the "Grigor Vitez Award" organized by the Croatian Center for Children's Books at the Zagreb City Libraries and reading promotion among older primary school children. It also seeks to emphasize the importance of collaboration between the library and external partners in achieving the goals of reading promotion. Approach/methodology. After an introduction to the topic of reading promotion, the first part of the paper presents children's juries in the world and in Croatia, as well as programs to promote reading in the Zagreb City Libraries. The second part of the paper explains in detail the work, activities, and importance of the Children's Jury in reading promotion among children and young people. Findings. Children's scoring of books, their written explanations and selection of the best books reveal what children love and want to read. Having the right to directly select the award winners of the „Ptičica Award", the children members the Children's Jury are given special importance, as well as the libraries from which they come and the librarians who have recommended them. Also, the award winners are especially honoured to receive the award from the children for whom they wrote or illustrated the book. Since the award-winning books are popular and gladly read, the members of the Children's Jury are a positive example and encouragement to other children in reading quality literature. Practical implications. In the Croatian Association of the Societies „Naša djeca", there is a vision to expand the „Grigor Vitez Award" through cooperation with other Croatian libraries in the organization of additional content and programs, including the Children's Jury. Social implications. Through reading promotion, developing critical thinking, and enhancing the freedom of expression of children and youth through the work of the Children's Jury, the library, as their organizer, plays an important role in building a better society as a whole. Originality/value. The Children's jury of the „Grigor Vitez Award" is the only children's jury for children's and youth literature in Croatia that selects the best books and awards in two categories: text and illustration, which gives importance to both the writer and the illustrator of the literary work. ELEMENTARY school teachers , *VOCATIONAL schools , *CULTURAL centers , *TEACHING aids , *SCHOOL supplies , *SCHOOL children - Abstract
The first Partisan schools in Moslavina began operating in the second half of 1942. They were located in Moslavačka Gora, where the liberated territory and military units of the Moslavina Detachment existed. The local NOO also operated in that area, organizing the work of the first schools in the towns of Popovac and Dišnik. At that time, apart from Moslavina, there were no Partisan schools in north-western Croatia. In the following year, 1943, the free territory in Moslavina increased and so did the number of schools. At the end of 1943, there were about 60 schools in Moslavina, 26 in Garešnica, 23 in Čazma and 18 in Kutina. At the end of 1943, the Partisans liberated Čazma, where the highest authorities of the NOP in Moslavina are located. In 1943, the Department of Education of ZAVNOH adopted the curricula and programs according to which teachers administered classes. Teachers' conferences are held to discuss work in schools and to improve work with students and teaching in general, especially because the schools lacked textbooks, manuals, teaching aids, notebooks, pencils, erasers, chalk and other things. Moslavina then, administratively according to the division of the NOP, belonged to the Zagreb region. On 15 May 1944, the Regional NOO was formed, which included the Education Department, whose members supervised the work of district, local and municipal educational authorities. In addition to the aforementioned supervision, members of the Education Department provided methodical and professional assistance to teachers. In the spring of 1944 there were 53 elementary schools with 48 teachers in Moslavina. Those schools, with minor interruptions, worked for the whole year. At the end of 1944, there were 71 elementary schools in the liberated part of Moslavina, with 103 teachers, and of that number, 83 were professionals. In the absence of primers, teachers used the magazine Pionir. In the Moslavina district, at the end of 1944, there were 4,546 compulsory schoolchildren and 2,634 school-goers (57.64%). In January, before the evacuation, there were 17 primary schools with 1,591 compulsory schools and 739 students (46.44%) in Čazma district, and 31 schools in Garešnica district. There were 23 elementary schools in the districts of Kutina and Dubrava. In the liberated territory of Moslavina there were secondary schools, grammar schools and vocational schools. There were 304 students in those schools taught by 18 teachers. At the end of January 1944, there was a grammar school in Dišnik. The conditions in which that school operated were very difficult. The school was without school supplies, manuals and textbooks, and the students were without the necessary clothes and shoes. In addition to the aforementioned activities, cultural centres where youth and pioneers performed have been operating since the end of 1943 in the liberated territory. In January 1945, students and teachers evacuated via Hungary to Vojvodina, where they continued their education. They had to leave Moslavina because of the great danger that threatened them from the German-Ustasha army that was advancing from the east to the west. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SERVICE learning , *STUDENT volunteers , *CONCEPT learning , *LIBRARY information networks , *CRITICAL thinking , *LIBRARY services for children , *STUDENT activism , *SCHOOL children - Abstract
Purpose. This paper presents the collaboration between the Marin Držić Children's Library and the Savica Library, two libraries of the Marin Držić Library network, a branch library of the Zagreb City Libraries network, and the students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb in the implementation of three service learning projects within the Service Learning course at the Department of Information and Communication Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb during the 2020/2021 academic year. Approach/methodology/design. The first part of the paper describes the concept of service learning which integrates education with social responsibility. Then the differences between service learning, volunteering and student placements are listed. Afterwards, the goals of implementing service learning projects are enumerated as well as the benefits such implementation brings. The importance of critical reflection of the implemented projects is also highlighted. The second part of the paper describes the role of librarians in the partnership and presents the three student projects intended for primary school children: "Learning through fun: micro:bit workshops", "Minecraft and Glagolitic script", and "Mein Freund: micro:bit". All three projects are in the STEM fields of technology and engineering and were implemented online in accordance with the measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 that were in force at the time of the project implementation. Findings. The implementation and evaluation of the presented projects have shown that the librarians, owing to their knowledge and experience, can be high-quality student mentors on service learning projects, but also that the students can help the libraries, as their partner organizations, to provide more innovative, high-quality, and diverse services to their users. Originality/value. The overview of service learning projects implemented in partnership with public libraries could serve as an incentive for other libraries that have not participated in the implementation of such projects to get involved in the implementation of service learning projects designed to meet the specific social needs of their local communities. SENSITIVITY (Personality trait) , *PSYCHOMETRICS , *SCHOOL children , *AGE , *CHILD development , *ADOLESCENCE - Abstract
Environmental sensitivity refers to how readily one registers and how deeply one processes information from the environment. Individual differences in environmental sensitivity determine an individual’s reactions to positive and negative environmental influences. The role of environmental sensitivity in children’s development has been underresearched, in large part because the first direct measure of children’s environmental sensitivity has only recently been developed. The aim of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of this measure – the Highly Sensitive Child (HSC) Scale (Pluess et al., 2018) – in Croatia. As part of the project How are we? Life in Croatia in the age of Coronavirus, primary (N = 407) and secondary (N = 307) school-aged children completed the HSC Scale and the IPIP-15 via an online survey. The HSC Scale, a self-report measure of environmental sensitivity, demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity levels among Croatian children and adolescents. The scale has a bifactor structure and measures general environmental sensitivity and three specific dimensions: aesthetic sensitivity, low sensory threshold and ease of excitation. Partial measurement invariance for children of different genders and ages was confirmed. Correlations of subscales and general environmental sensitivity with personality traits are moderate and theoretically meaningful. The scale demonstrated good psychometric characteristics and is recommended for use in future research, although further research on the subscales is needed. Application of this scale can contribute to knowledge about the effects of positive and negative environmental influences on the development of children and adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MOBILE libraries , *LIBRARY acquisitions , *LIBRARY public services , *LIBRARY users , *PUBLIC libraries , *JOB satisfaction , *SCHOOL children , *LIBRARIANS' attitudes - Abstract
Purpose. The aim of this research was to determine the information needs and reading habits of the users of the mobile library services of the Zadar Public Library, as well as their satisfaction with the existing services and the choice of library materials available at the mobile library service. The purpose was to gather user feedback in order to support the continuation of the services that are important to the users, with the possible further service improvements. Approach/methodology/design. The research included a questionnaire that was distributed to 100 mobile library users of all ages during the summer of 2019, and two interviews with the information services librarians that were conducted during the summer of 2020. The sample included the users from the islands and coastal areas that are served by the mobile library no. 2 from the Zadar City Library. Findings. Pupils and adults are the two main groups of mobile library users. The pupils borrow more multimedia, entertainment, and sports books, and they read children's books, while the adults borrow more fiction and non-fiction books. The adult users, who are employed or retired, stated that they were mostly satisfied with the choice of books, while the pupils were completely satisfied. The users were completely satisfied with the information services librarians. These librarians take care of user recommendations and availability of library materials because they are well aware of the needs of the regular library members. Research limitations. The sample did not include the mobile library service no. 1, which serves mainly the inland of the Zadar County. The research was conducted during the summer, and most of the mobile library stops that are next to the schools were empty because of the summer holidays. Practical implications. Further improvement of library services and acquisition of new library materials can be carried out on the basis of the user suggestions and their satisfaction with the availability of library materials. Social implications. An insight into the needs of the mobile library users in rural areas enables further work on equalizing access to information in both rural and urban areas. The high user satisfaction confirms the irreplaceable role of the Zadar Public Library mobile library service in the county settlements that do not have stationary libraries. Originality/value. Considering that there are very few similar surveys in Croatia related to mobile libraries, the methodology and the results of the work can serve other mobile library services as an example of good practice when they wish to examine the needs and satisfaction of users in order to improve the services. INFLUENZA pandemic, 1918-1919 , *DEATH certificates , *SCHOOL absenteeism , *SCHOOL closings , *MARITAL status , *SCHOOL children , *SUBURBS - Abstract
The Spanish influenza pandemic that affected global population in 1918-20 is considered as one of the most lethal ones in human history. According to recent estimates, 500 million people had been infected while 50 to 100 million died. Within Austria-Hungary, the second wave of the pandemic in autumn of 1918 spread to Slovenian population as well. The research - based on death register analyses, newspaper articles, minutes of the municipal council meetings, as well as memoires and diaries from the time of WWI - relates to the city of Ljubljana. The death register analysis results for 11 city and surrounding parishes and those for the provincial hospital demonstrate that 414 people died in the city itself and its suburbs. The fatalities in the city started emerging in the second half of September 1918 and culminated in October of that year. Most of the deceased were young adults and children, more women than men, predominantly single persons (as regards the marital status) and children. Indirect sources revealed that school children were affected in great numbers, which caused mass school absenteeism during the epidemic. The latter also prompted the only public health measure by the authorities, i.e. the closure of schools for a month. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this research was to examine the reactions of pupils attending lower grades of primary school to the presented artworks of contemporary sculpture, in this case the artworks by the well-known Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The survey was conducted in the area of the Split-Dalmatia County and included 300 primary school pupils attending 1st to 4th grade, including 151 boys and 149 girls. The pupils were shown three very important artworks by the mentioned artist which differ in the approach to the volume design and composition type. These are the following works: Mother and Child, Monument to Indians in Chicago and The Spring of Life. The results of the research have shown that there is a statistically significant difference in the perception and acceptance of certain works by Ivan Meštrović with regard to the age and gender of the pupils. In open-ended questions, the pupils presented their observations on certain works of the well-known artist, which due to their directness and originality represent the most valuable part of this research. The theme of this thesis is the educational dimension of the school with an emphasis on the importance and role of moral education in the process of the overall development of school children. This paper describes the basic pedagogical terms, moral education and education, which we encounter every day and everywhere, and which are an integral part of the school system. We talk about the school as an educational institution, but the fact is that moral education and the educational function of the school are more and more often neglected and relegated to the background. In today's time, knowledge is considered a fundamental condition for the development of society, and it is known that knowledge without a moral component can be dangerous. Furthermore, great attention was paid to the teacher who, after the parents, has an important role in educating the children. What kind of people our children will become depends mostly on (moral) education. Considering this, raising moral, happy, responsible and successful children is certainly one of the most humane goals and tasks of the school.

U promicanju zdravlja kroz zdravstvenu zaštitu djece važno mjesto zauzimaju preventivne mjere u cilju optimizacije rasta i razvoja djece školske dobi. In the promotion of health through the health care of children, an important place is occupied by preventive measures aimed at optimizing the growth and development of school-age children. Physiologically, school-aged children experience various psychosomatic changes. Precisely the systematic monitoring of the growth and development of children is the basis for undertaking timely and appropriate medical interventions in order to ensure health. The nurse plays an important role in the uninterrupted provision of comprehensive health services to school children and young people. An increasing number of students are entering schools with chronic health conditions that require management during the school day. The role of the nurse as a member of the multidisciplinary team is to provide preventive care, early identification of problems, implementation of interventions and recommendations to encourage health and educational success. Preparation, continuing education and appropriate staff and nurses are important success factors for optimal child care. Recommendations are given to facilitate the working relationship between the nurse and the child together with his family members. The aim of the paper is to describe the growth and development of school-age children, signs of risky behavior, protection against infectious diseases, nutrition, to describe standards and guidelines for monitoring them with an emphasis on the role of the nurse in providing care.
