Together with glucose and amino acids, fatty acids represent essential nutrients during the intrauterine life of a fetus. Free fatty acids play an essential role in optimizing fetal growth and development. They are an essential component of cell membrane components. The fetus requires an adequate supply of fatty acids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids. Essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids from formed metabolites (eiconasanoids) with solid local activity. Specifically, the docosahexaenoic fatty acid is an n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid of particular importance for fetal growth, especially for CNS development. The different kinds of food a mother consumes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect pregnancy, the fetus, and the neonatal outcome. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are of particular importance due to their numerous physiological functions (metabolic, energetic, and structural), and their changes in quantity may affect some pathological conditions. This review article aims to show maternal and placental factors involved in determining the availability of fetal fatty acids and metabolism by focusing on the specific role of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in normal and pathological pregnancies.
