Avulsion injury of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon from the distal phalanx is considered as a rare injury. We report a patient who sustained a FDP tendon rupture insertion on her fifth finger as a result of a closed, hyperextension with no accompanying laceration or predisposing pathologic condition. Preoperative ultrasonography showed complete rupture of FDP and the gap between the tendon ends. According to the classification by Leddy and Pacter, this case is type II. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of our method, which estimated femoral stem alignment using a c-arm when the broach was inserted, for prevention of femoral stem malalignment. Materials and Methods: A total of 103 hips were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent primary hip arthroplasty from October 2011 to February 2013. The study was conducted retrospectively. Intraoperative estimated femoral stem alignments and final femoral stem alignments were classified into three groups. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed for analysis of factors (age, sex, diagnosis, body mass index, femoral stem size, osteoporosis, and proximal demur geometry) that might affect intraoperatively estimated femoral stem alignment. Results: The distribution of intraoperative estimated femoral stem alignment was 80(78%) in the neutral group, 18(17%) in the varus group, and 5(5%) in the valgus group. The distribution of final femoral stem alignment was 100(97%) in the neutral group, 2(2%) in the varus group, and 1(1%) in the valgus group. There was no statistically significant factor affecting the intraoperatively estimated femoral stem alignment. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, also known as "baker's yeast" or "brewer's yeast", and is considered to be a frequent colonizer of human mucosal surfaces. Although it is a very uncommon cause of infections in humans, it can cause wide range of clinical syndromes, including pneumonia, empyema, liver abscess, peritonitis, urinary tract infection, cellulitis, unexplained fever, or septic shock, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Fungemia is the most severe and well-proven manifestation of S.cerevisiae infections. According to previous studies, the conditions related to immunosupression, such as cancer, HIV infection, use of corticosteroid, neutropenia, stem cell transplantation, solid organ transplantation, burns and heart surgery, appear to be predisposing factors to fungemia. The antifungal agent of choice has not been established. We report two cases ofS.cerevMae fungemia in patients with hematologic malignancies. Clinical presentations associated with acute human immunodeficiency virus (HIV infection are various and nonspecific. Neurologic manifestations may accompany acute HIV infection. Aseptic meningitis has been described in several reports; however, acute encephalitis during acute HIV infection is rare. Some studies have suggested that antiretroviral therapy for treatment of symptomatic acute HIV infection could be beneficial, especially in severe cases. Encephalitis is life threatening; therefore, early diagnosis and antiretroviral therapy may be needed We report on a case of encephalitis associated with acute H IV infection. Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare chronic suppurative infection that is difficult to diagnose precisely without an operation. It also tends to be misdiagnosed as a malignancy, intestinal tuberculosis, diverticular disease, or Crohn's disease. A 54-year-old man presented with loose stools, hematochezia, and vague abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant. He had had a history of hematochezia and recurrent colon ulcers on colonoscopy seven times within the past 3 years. A colonoscopy at admission revealed multiple, variably sized and shaped ulcerations in the terminal ileum, cecum, and ascending and transverse colons. Biopsies from the cecal ulcer demonstrated sulfur granules. This is the first cases of abdominal actinomycosis presenting as a recurrent lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to ileocolic ulcerations in Korea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic chronic inflammation of the intestines. IBD treatment may require anti-inflammatory agents such as sulfasalazine or 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) and immunomodulators to control the symptoms. However, these agents have a variety of common adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, skin rash, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and infections. Moreover, rare side effects such as nephrotic syndrome, pneumonitis, and pericarditis can occur. A 21-year-old male was admitted to the hospital due to acute chest pain, fever, and sweating. The patient had a history of Crohn's disease and had been taking mesalazine for 3 weeks. Chest x-ray, echocardiography, and clinical manifestations revealed that the patient had acute pericarditis. However, we did not recognize the relationship between these findings and 5-ASA at that time. Two years later, the patient took 5-ASA again, and similar symptoms occurred, which led us to confirm that he suffered from pericarditis induced by this drug. We report a case of acute recurrent pericarditis that developed after taking 5-ASA for IBD treatment with a review of the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the weight loss and isotonic core exercise on oswestry disability index (ODI), trunk extensor and flexor muscle strength in obese middle-aged women with chronic low back pain. METHODS Eighteen obese middle-aged woman with chronic low back pain were randomly assigned into weight loss + core exercise group (WL+CE, n=6), core exercise group (CE, n=6), and control group (CON, n=6). The weight loss goal was set at approximately 0.5-1 kg per week, and core exercises were conducted for 60 minutes, three times a week, for 8 weeks. Body composition (weight, % body fat, muscle mass, WHR), ODI, trunk extensor and flexor muscle strength were measured before, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks after core exercise. OBJECTIVES This study was conducted to figure out the effects of kendo training on the activity of brainwaves by analyzing changes in brainwaves during chudan-no-kamae and three-movement-striking, which are basic movements of kendo, in elementary school students who undergo kendo training and comparing left and right side brainwave activities to find out differences. METHODS This study was conducted with 29 male elementary school students living in K City who were experts in kendo with a career as an athlete or a kendo training period not shorter than six months. The brainwave activity was measured by measuring and analyzing brainwaves at eight regions at the prefrontal lobe, the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe, and the occipital lobe using brainwave measuring equipment. Brainwaves were measured for 5 minutes in a sitting position in a stable state and were also measured for 5 minutes after 15 minutes of the chudan-no-kamae movement, which is aiming at the opponent with the point of the sword while moving along eight moving lines of the opponents, and for 5 minutes after 15 minutes of three striking movements. RESULTS Alpha waves showed higher brainwave activity during the stable state than during the kendo movements (three striking movements, chudan-no-kamae) while SMR, M-beta, and H-beta showed higher brainwave activity after kendo movements than during the resting state. The asymmetry between the left and right sides increased after the movements compared to during the resting state. CONCLUSIONS These results are considered attributable to kendo training that partly increased their concentration thereby increasing brainwave activity. However, it is unclear that kendo training will be helpful for concentration through physical activities and brain activity in this study. Therefore, further study should be conducted with the measurement of factors related to emotional aspects, concentration, and brainwaves according to kendo training.

PURPOSE The current study identified effects of the health risk information strategy on risk perception to diseases related to physical inactivity, and test the relationships between changes in risk perception and changes in physical activity. METHODS A total of 37 adolescents voluntarily participated in the 12-week health risk information strategy. In the initial stage of this study, adolescents were randomly classified into the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group was instructed the health risk information twice a week, while the control group lived a routine life. Health vulnerability, objective risk factors related to physical inactivity, and physical activity were measured to the study variables and 2× 2 repeated measure analysis of variance and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. RESULTS Results indicated that the adolescents at health risks related to physical inactivity showed significant increase in risk perception on waist size and BMI after the health risk information strategy. In addition, changes in risk perception on obesity and diabetes significantly influenced on changes in physical activity. CONCLUSIONS This study implies that it needs to actively promote not only health risks due to physical inactivity, but health benefits of physical activity in order to reduce diseases associated with physical inactivity in health promotion and preventive medicine.
