Purpose: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on the association between adverse childhood events (ACEs) and mental health problems in cancer survivors. Methods: This review was conducted in line with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Four databases (PubMed, PsychINFO, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were searched on 27–08-2023. Results: Of the 1413 references yielded by the literature search, 25 papers met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Most studies were performed in the USA, most included breast cancer survivors, and the number of included participants ranged between 20 and 1343. ACEs were relatively prevalent, with self-report rates ranging between 40 and 95%. Having been exposed to ACEs was a risk factor for heightened levels of emotional distress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and fatigue during cancer treatment. Results varied depending on the variables included, and per subscale, but were consistent across different cultures and heterogenous patient groups. Conclusion: The association between ACE and mental health outcomes was significant in most studies. In order to improve treatment for this vulnerable population, it may be necessary to screen for ACEs before cancer treatment and adjust treatment, for example, by means of trauma-informed care (TIC), which recognizes and responds to the impact of trauma on individuals seeking healthcare. Purpose: Review the literature to update the MASCC guidelines from 2015 for controlling nausea and vomiting with systemic cancer treatment of moderate emetic potential. Methods: A systematic literature review was completed using Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases. The literature search was done from June 2015 to January 2023 of the management of antiemetic prophylaxis for anticancer therapy of moderate emetic potential. Results: Of 342 papers identified, 19 were relevant to update recommendations about managing antiemetic prophylaxis for systemic cancer treatment regimens of moderate emetic potential. Important practice changing updates include the use of emetic prophylaxis based on a triple combination of neurokinin (NK)1 receptor antagonist, 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, and steroids for patients undergoing carboplatin (AUC ≥ 5) and women < 50 years of age receiving oxaliplatin-based treatment. A double combination of 5-HT3 receptor antagonist and steroids remains the recommended prophylaxis for other MEC. Based on the data in the literature, it is recommended that the administration of steroids should be limited to day 1 in moderately emetogenic chemotherapy regimens, due to the demonstration of non-inferiority between the different regimens. More data is needed on the emetogenicity of new agents at moderate emetogenic risk. Of particular interest would be antiemetic studies with the agents sacituzumab-govitecan and trastuzumab-deruxtecan. Experience to date with these agents indicate an emetogenic potential comparable to carboplatin > AUC 5. Future studies should systematically include patient-related risk assessment in order to define the risk of emesis with MEC beyond the emetogenicity of the chemotherapy and improve the guidelines for new drugs. Conclusion: This antiemetic MASCC-ESMO guideline update includes new recommendations considering individual risk factors and the optimization of supportive anti-emetic treatments. Background: Quality of life (QOL) is impaired in patients with head and neck cancers (HNC) due to illness and treatment-associated morbidity. Although there is evidence from the studies on interventions’ role in improving QOL receiving radiation therapy, these are not systematically synthesised. In this scoping review, we searched and synthesised the evidence on interventions to improve the QOL and its impact among patients with HNCs. Methods: This scoping review was conducted using the framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley, and the extensions suggested by Levac et al. were incorporated. Two reviewers independently searched four electronic databases using key thesaurus and free-text terms, and the data was extracted, tabulated, synthesised and reported as categories. Results: Seventy-nine papers reported various interventions of diverse nature such as pharmacological, physical, nutritional, complementary and alternative therapies, psychosocial, oral care related, laser and photobiomodulation therapies, rehabilitative, educational, technology-based, surgical, device-related and nurse lead interventions. Most studies reported clinically meaningful impact of interventions on QOL, although the outcome differences were often statistically insignificant. Few studies reported a combination of interventions to address the multidimensional concerns faced by patients with HNCs. None of the studies examined the impact of interventions on QOL among long-term survivors of HNCs. Conclusion: As QOL concerns in patients with HNCs are multifaceted, more extensive studies with complex multi-component interventions and robust research designs are warranted. Purpose: Review the literature to update the MASCC guidelines from 2016 for controlling nausea and vomiting with systemic cancer treatment of low and minimal emetic potential. Methods: A working group performed a systematic literature review using Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases between June 2015 and January 2023 of the management of antiemetic prophylaxis for anticancer therapy of low or minimal emetic potential. A consensus committee reviewed recommendations and required a consensus of 67% or greater and a change in outcome of at least 10%. Results: Of 293 papers identified, 15 had information about managing systemic cancer treatment regimens of low or minimal emetic potential and/or compliance with previous management recommendations. No new evidence was reported that would change the current MASCC recommendations. No antiemetic prophylaxis is recommended for minimal emetic potential therapy, and single agents recommended for low emetic potential chemotherapy for acute emesis, but no prophylaxis is recommended for delayed emesis. Commonly, rescue medication includes antiemetics prescribed for the next higher level of emesis. Conclusion: There is insufficient data to change the current guidelines. Future studies should seek to more accurately determine the risk of emesis with LEC beyond the emetogenicity of the chemotherapy to include patient-related risk assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Most patients receiving a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are able to tolerate and benefit from physical activity (PA). Therefore, it is important that health care professionals (HCPs) advise patients to perform PA before, during, and after transplantation. By understanding which medical conditions and safety issues are associated with the (non-) promotion of PA, concrete actions and interventions can be planned and implemented.Methods: Physicians (N = 51), nurses (N = 52), and physical therapists (N = 26) participated in a nationwide cross-sectional online survey. HCPs' understanding of 15 medical conditions as contraindications for PA was assessed. Significant group differences were determined using chi-square analysis.Results: Acute infection was the only condition which was considered as contraindication by all HCPs (62.7%). Cachexia (78%), having a stoma (91%), or port (96.2%), psychological problems (88.4%), and leukopenia (83.3%) were not considered as contraindications. Six conditions were rated inconsistently between the groups, whereas physicians had the least concerns regarding PA. Physicians with an additional training in PA perceived a platelet count of ≤ 50,000/μl significantly less often as contraindication (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The large number of potentially-answers especially in nursing staff and physical therapists might reflect caution or uncertainty. There is a clear need for a good multidisciplinary cooperation between all HCPs in order to support patients to confidently engage in PA. Furthermore, education possibilities and evidence-based courses to build knowledge regarding safety concerns should be the standard practice in the setting of HSCT. Purpose: Continuing employment or returning to work (RTW) as a cancer survivor can be meaningful and financially necessary, yet challenging. However, there is a lack of qualitative research on RTW experiences and financial wellbeing of people with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC-A). This study aimed to fill this gap.Methods: Adults treated for CRC-A were recruited 0.5-2 years post-surgery (or post-diagnosis of CRC-A for palliative chemotherapy participants). Semi-structured telephone interviews, exploring RTW and finances, were subjected to framework analysis. Demographic, clinical, and quality of life data (FACT-C, Distress Thermometer, COST measure) were collected to characterise the sample and inform the framework analysis.Results: Analysis of 38 interviews revealed five overarching themes: work as a struggle, work as my identity, work as my saviour, work as a financial necessity, and employer and colleague response. Many survivors with CRC-A desired to, and had the capacity to, continue work or RTW, yet faced unique challenges from compounded stigma of both cancer and toileting issues. Inability to RTW negatively impacted financial and psychosocial wellbeing. Workplace support was an important facilitator of RTW.Conclusion: For survivors with CRC-A, continuing or RTW is fraught with challenges, including physical functioning challenges, financial anxiety, and unsupportive workplace environments. Survivors require psychosocial, financial, and employer support to manage these difficulties. This paper recommends a multiprong approach, including education programmes (facilitated through workers' union groups, human resource institutions, and/or large consumer CRC groups) and policies, to support workers and for employers to understand the unique challenges of employees with CRC-A. Objectives: Cancer is a frequent illness and a traumatic experience for both patients and their families. This systematic review aims to analyse studies that examine socio-demographic and clinical characteristics that predict the coping strategies in cancer patients.Methods: From January 2000 to March 2021, the database searches were conducted in 7 different databases, using relevant keywords. According to PRISMA Statements, full-text, peer-reviewed articles in English which used socio-demographics as independent variables and coping as dependent variables were included.Results: Of 1101 abstracts and titles, 30 full-text papers were included. Overall results showed a great influence of socio-demographic characteristics (such as women, younger, in a relationship, with high educational level, with active work status, and high income) on positive coping strategies adopted by cancer patients. Regarding clinical characteristics, no-metastatic patients who have recently been diagnosed, especially in the early stage of cancer, and who know the characteristics of their illness and treatments, more frequently used adaptive coping strategies.Conclusions: Both socio-demographics and clinical characteristics showed considerable influence on the coping strategies adopted by patients in most of the investigations. These results supported the assessment of basic patients' information (sociodemographic and clinical characteristics) as fundamental to quickly outline an efficient, supportive, and holistic taking-over, before all the essential and in-depth considerations.Trial Registration: This systematic review was recorded in PROSPERO with the registration number: CRD42021254776. This paper aims to provide a narrative review of the risks, diagnosis, and management of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer patients. There is an established association between cancer and VTE, with cancer being a major risk factor for VTE. A history of VTE, short duration of oral anticoagulation, and a proximal DVT are all associated with increased risk for recurrent VTE. Studies have shown that certain cancers (e.g., metastatic genitourinary, lung, and colorectal cancers) are associated with recurrent VTE. Published literature shows that cancer is prothrombotic, and various mechanisms have been postulated as pathways for increased thrombogenesis and hence recurrent VTE in cancer. The symptoms, signs, laboratory information, and imaging results for the diagnosis of recurrent VTE are similar to those of an initial VTE. Management of recurrent VTE involves using low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) or a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC). Cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) adversely affects the quality of life and survival of people with cancer. A holistic approach is optimal for the treatment and secondary prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) including shared decision-making around anticoagulation, considering individual risk factors for VTE recurrence, morbidities from VTE, and resources available in cancer centres around the world. Taking a global perspective on availability and cost, this paper guides the reader through the wider aspects of treatment and secondary thromboprophylaxis which, in turn, influence the recent international guidelines. Treatment of locally advanced head and neck carcinoma not amenable for surgical resection or resected with high-risk features is usually based on (chemo-)radiation treatment. Oral mucositis represents one of the main side effects of (chemo-)radiation, with an important impact on quality of life and causing approximately 20% of early interruption of treatment, leading to a suboptimal dose administered. Treatment and prevention of oral mucositis have a central role in the therapeutic pathways of head and neck cancer patients but remains quite challenging. Although extensive research is conducted to identify interventions for the management of mucositis, very few interventions had sufficient evidence to generate an international expert consensus. This may be partially explained by confounding factors that could influence the development and assessment of oral mucositis. Little is known about the confounding factors of oral mucositis, which, if not well balanced in an experimental study, could lead to non-solid results. Purpose: Radiochemotherapy is the standard of care for the treatment of anal carcinoma achieving good loco-regional control and sphincter preservation. This approach is however associated with acute and late toxicities including haematological, skin, bowel function and genito-urinary complications. This paper systematically reviews studies addressing the quality of life (QoL) implications of anal cancer and radiochemotherapy. The paper also evaluates how QoL is assessed in anal cancer.Methods: Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library were searched for publications (1996-2014) reporting the effects on patients of anal cancer and radiochemotherapy.Results: Of the 152 papers reporting treatment-related effects on patients, only 11 provided a formal assessment of QoL. In the absence of an anal cancer-specific measure, QoL was assessed using generic cancer instruments such as the core EORTC quality of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) or colorectal cancer tools such as the EORTC QLQ-CR29. Bowel function, particularly diarrhoea, and sexual problems were the most commonly reported QoL concerns. The review of QoL issues of anal cancer patients treated with radiochemotherapy is limited by the QoL assessment measures used. It is argued that certain treatment-related toxicities, for example skin-induced radiation problems, are overlooked or inadequately represented in existing measures.Conclusions: This review emphasises the need to develop an anal cancer-specific QoL measure and to incorporate QoL as an outcome of future trials in anal cancer. Purpose: To care for the growing population of cancer survivors, health services worldwide must reconsider how to deliver care to people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. Shared care, defined as cancer care that is shared between specialist and primary care providers, is one model that has been investigated; however, practical guidance to support implementation is lacking. This systematic review aimed to explore facilitators and barriers to implementing shared cancer care and to develop practice and policy recommendations to support implementation.Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in June 2019 across MEDLINE, Embase, Emcare, and PsycINFO databases. Quantitative and qualitative data relevant to the review question were extracted and synthesized following a mixed methods approach.Results: Thirteen papers were included in the review, 10 qualitative and three quantitative. Included articles were from Australia (n = 8), the USA (n = 3), and one each from the UK and the Netherlands. Sixteen themes were developed under four categories of patient, healthcare professional, process, and policy factors. Key themes included the perceived need for primary care provider training, having clearly defined roles for each healthcare provider, providing general practitioners with diagnostic and treatment summaries, as well as protocols or guidelines for follow-up care, ensuring rapid and accurate communication between providers, utilizing electronic medical records and survivorship care plans as communication tools, and developing consistent policy to reduce fragmentation across services.Conclusion: Recommendations for practice and policy were generated based on review findings that may support broader implementation of shared cancer care. Purpose: Numerous studies have examined non-adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy in women recovering from breast cancer, but none provides a comprehensive theory to explain the challenges of long-term medication taking and resilience needed to continue. The aim of this study was to source, appraise, and synthesize data from existing qualitative studies to develop an in-depth explanatory model of non-adherence and discontinuation of hormonal medication among breast cancer survivors.Methods: A comprehensive search of databases and the literature identified 24 eligible qualitative studies published 2010-2019. Quotations (n = 801) listed within these papers and the original author interpretations were synthesized using NVivo, and grounded theory methodology.Results: At the beginning, knowledge about adjuvant endocrine therapy, trust in doctors, and worries and expectations, mean agreeing to medication is the only viable option, akin to a Hobson's choice. Thereafter, women's ability to deal with medication side-effects, knowledge and support received affect their decision to continue, akin to a horned dilemma where giving up the medication risks cancer recurrence and continuing means reduced contentment. Women stopping medication altogether question treatment necessity, search for normalcy and prioritize quality of life.Conclusion: Shared experiences and understandings were uncovered by examining commonalities in existing publications. The core category explained the difficulties women face with the initial decision to accept long-term endocrine therapy and then the everyday challenges of continuing or deciding to stop treatment early. Purpose: Given the high survival rate of cervical cancer patients, understanding women's health-related quality of life (HRQL) during and after treatment is of major clinical importance. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize all available evidence about the effects of each contemporary treatment modality for cervical cancer on all dimensions of women's HRQL, including symptoms, functioning, and global HRQL.Methods: We searched four electronic databases from January 2000 to September 2019, cross-referenced and searched by author name for studies of patients treated for cervical cancer that reported patient-reported outcomes (PROs) before treatment and with at least one post-treatment measurement. Two independent reviewers applied inclusion and quality criteria and extracted findings. Studies were categorized by treatment to determine specific treatment effects on PROs. Results were narratively summarized.Results: We found twenty-nine papers reporting 23 studies. After treatments with curative intent for early or locally advanced disease, lymphedema, diarrhea, menopausal symptoms, tight and shorter vagina, pain during intercourse, and sexual worries remained long-term problems; however, sexual activity improved over time. HRQL and psychological distress were impacted during treatment with also worsening of global HRQL but improved 3-6 months after treatment. In patients with metastatic or recurrent disease, pain improved during palliative treatment or remained stable, with no differences in global HRQL found over time.Conclusion: Whereas most symptoms worsen during treatment and improve in the first 3 months after completing treatment, symptoms like lymphedema, menopausal symptoms, and sexual worries develop gradually and persist after curative treatment. These findings can be used to inform clinical practice and facilitate communication and shared decision-making. Purposes: Patients after gastrectomy have poor compliance with oral nutritional supplement (ONS) therapy. Incorporating patient preferences into treatment decisions allows possible product improvements or treatment focus adjustments. The purpose of this research was to investigate the preferences for ONS therapy among postoperative patients with gastric cancer, and to provide person-centered oral nutrition management strategies.Methods: A discrete choice experiment was designed and implemented within a Chinese cancer population. The survey was administered via paper-based questionnaires during face-to-face interviews with assistance from health professionals. A mixed logit model was used to estimate respondents' preferences for different levels of nutrition therapy attributes.Results: One hundred ninety respondents valued "Adverse reactions-almost none" (β 3.43 [SE, 0.28]) the most, followed by "Flavor-good taste" (β 0.68 [SE, 0.13]) and "Follow-up frequency-once every 2 weeks" (β 0.52 [SE, 0.13]), and were willing to pay more for these attribute levels. Respondents would be 93.73% more likely to accept a nutrition therapy program if there were almost no adverse reactions compared to the frequent adverse reactions.Conclusions: Health professionals should pay attention to the management and prevention of adverse reactions when prescribing nutritional products, and provide diversified ONS products when necessary to meet patient preferences. When formulating intervention strategies, health professionals should also consider the different characteristics of patients, acknowledge the importance of the role of nurse specialists in a novel model of multidisciplinary nutritional care, standardize ONS information, follow up regularly, and encourage patients' families to participate in daily nutrition care. Background: Continued smoking after a cancer diagnosis limits the effectiveness of treatment, increases the risk of cancer recurrence or secondary malignancies, and is associated with poorer quality of life and survival. A cancer diagnosis may provide a meaningful timepoint for quitting, but the prevalence and characteristics of continued smoking through survivorship are poorly understood. Methods: In the multi-regional Cancer Care Outcomes Research and Surveillance (CanCORS) cohort, we examined smoking rates and factors associated with continued smoking at long-term follow-up among lung and colorectal cancer patients. This paper builds upon previous CanCORS participant data addressing quit rates and associated characteristics at baseline and 5 months post-diagnosis. Results: At long-term follow-up (median 7.3 years post-diagnosis [IQR = 5.9–8.7]), 16.7% of lung cancer and 11.6% of colorectal cancer survivors continued to smoke combustible cigarettes. Factors independently associated with continued smoking at long-term follow-up included being male, younger, not married or partnered, having Medicare, Medicaid/other public or no insurance, more depression symptoms, smoking more cigarettes per day, and having a history of lung disease (p <.05). Continued smoking did not vary by lung vs. colorectal cancer diagnosis. Conclusion: Of active smokers at the time of diagnosis, an important minority of lung and colorectal cancer survivors continued to smoke well into survivorship. Understanding characteristics associated with continued smoking after a cancer diagnosis may help inform the development of tobacco treatment programs for cancer patients and survivors. Implications for survivors: While addressing smoking cessation at the time of diagnosis is critical to ensure better long-term treatment outcomes and quality of life, it is essential to continue smoking cessation discussions and efforts throughout care and survivorship. Purpose: The purpose of this narrative review was to synthesize the evidence on sleep health in young women with breast cancer and provide recommendations for clinical practice and research. Methods: Multiple databases were searched (OVID Medline, OVID PsycINFO, OVID Embase, and Scopus) using the search terms "breast neoplasm", "young women", "sleep", "sleep disturbance", "sleep problems", "sleep deficiency", and "insomnia". There were 467 titles and abstracts screened, and 82 full-text papers were reviewed, yielding 11 research publications for inclusion. Results: Sleep problems are prevalent among young women with breast cancer and are associated with vasomotor symptoms of menopause and psychological symptom distress. The evidence, however, is weak due to methodological and design aspects of the studies. Conclusions: Poor sleep health in women with breast cancer is a clinically relevant problem that persists after treatment. As sleep is multidimensional and multifactorial, future research should evaluate sleep with objective sleep measures as well as self-reports; consider longitudinal designs; include factors that potentially contribute to poor sleep quality, such as physical and psychological symptom distress, family stressors, and competing life demands for this age group; and explore the perspective of this younger population of survivors on sleep. Purpose: Survival rates after colorectal and anal cancer are increasing and more patients have late complications to treatment. This represents a clinical field under development, and we have established a specialized clinic for late complications after colorectal and anal cancer. With this paper, we want to give our experiences and present the organizational setup with a nurse as the primary contact person.Methods: We have established a multidisciplinary clinic for the treatment of late complications and the clinic is organized with specialized nurses as the front persons. The structure includes a stepwise increase in expertise level when needed, and the patient has one common entry regardless of symptoms. Initial screening is performed by an electronic questionnaire which is followed up by a consultation with the nurse. The nurse can provide primary treatment according to local algorithms developed in the clinic and refer the patient to more specialized care if needed.Results: Experiences from the first year of service show that more than half of the patients needs this and wants consultation in the late complication clinic. We also found that most of the consultations were performed successfully by phone instead of by physical visits, and the most common clinical problem was bowel symptoms including diarrhea and urge.Conclusion: We have established a nurse-led clinic for late complications after colorectal and anal cancer. Objective: To update the clinical practice guidelines for the management of oral mucositis (OM) that were developed by the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO). This part focuses on honey, herbal compounds, saliva stimulants, probiotics, and miscellaneous agents.Methods: A systematic review was conducted by the Mucositis Study Group of MASCC/ISOO. The body of evidence for each intervention, in each clinical setting, was assigned an evidence level. The findings were added to the database used to develop the 2014 MASCC/ISOO clinical practice guidelines. Based on the evidence level, one of the following guidelines were determined: Recommendation, Suggestion, No Guideline Possible.Results: A total of 78 papers were identified within the scope of this section, of which 49 were included in this review and merged with nine publications that were reported in the previous guidelines update. A new Suggestion was made for honey (combined topical and systemic delivery) for the prevention of OM in head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. A new Suggestion clarified that chewing gum is not effective for the prevention of OM in pediatric patients with hematological or solid cancer treated with chemotherapy. No guideline was possible for other interventions.Conclusions: Numerous natural products and herbal remedies were studied for the management of OM. Of the agents reviewed in this systematic review, a guideline in favor was made for honey (combined topical and systemic), while a guideline against was made for chewing gum. Introduction: Weight loss in cancer patients is a worrisome constitutional change predicting disease progression and shortened survival time. A logical approach to counter some of the weight loss is to provide nutritional support, administered through enteral nutrition (EN) or parenteral nutrition (PN). The aim of this paper was to update the original systematic review and meta-analysis previously published by Chow et al., while also assessing publication quality and effect of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the meta-conclusion over time.Methods: A literature search was carried out; screening was conducted for RCTs published in January 2015 up until December 2018. The primary endpoints were the percentage of patients achieving no infection and no nutrition support complications. Secondary endpoints included proportion of patients achieving no major complications and no mortality. Review Manager (RevMan 5.3) by Cochrane IMS and Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (version 3) by Biostat were used for meta-analyses of endpoints and assessment of publication quality.Results: An additional seven studies were identified since our prior publication, leading to 43 papers included in our review. The results echo those previously published; EN and PN are equivalent in all endpoints except for infection. Subgroup analyses of studies only containing adults indicate identical risks across all endpoints. Cumulative meta-analysis suggests that meta-conclusions have remained the same since the beginning of publication time for all endpoints except for the endpoint of infection, which changed from not favoring to favoring EN after studies published in 1997. There was low risk of bias, as determined by assessment tool and visual inspection of funnel plots.Conclusions: The results support the current European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism guidelines recommending enteral over parenteral nutrition, when oral nutrition is inadequate, in adult patients. Further studies comparing EN and PN for these critical endpoints appear unnecessary, given the lack of change in meta-conclusion and low publication bias over the past decades. Purpose: The aim of this study was to update the clinical practice guidelines for the use of agents for the prevention and/or treatment of gastrointestinal mucositis (GIM).Methods: A systematic review was conducted by the Mucositis Study Group of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society for Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO). The body of evidence for each intervention, in each cancer treatment setting, was assigned an evidence level. Based on the evidence level, one of the following three guideline determinations was possible: Recommendation, Suggestion, and No Guideline Possible.Results: A total of 78 papers across 13 interventions were examined of which 25 were included in the final review. No new guidelines were possible for any agent due to inadequate and/or conflicting evidence. Existing guidelines for probiotics and hyperbaric oxygen were unchanged.Conclusions: Of the agents studied for the prevention and treatment of GIM, the evidence continues to support use of probiotics containing Lactobacillus spp. for prevention of chemoradiotherapy and radiotherapy-induced diarrhea in patients with pelvic malignancy, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat radiation-induced proctitis. Additional well-designed research is encouraged to enable a decision regarding palifermin, glutamine, sodium butyrate, and dietary interventions, for the prevention or treatment of GIM. Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to update the clinical practice guidelines for the use of anti-inflammatory agents in the prevention and/or treatment of oral mucositis.Methods: A systematic review was conducted by the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/ International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO) subcommittee on mucositis guideline update. The body of evidence for each intervention, in each cancer treatment setting, was assigned an evidence level. The findings were added to the database used to develop the clinical practice guidelines published in 2014. The recommendation for the use of benzydamine mouthwash for the prevention of radiotherapy-induced mucositis remained unchanged. New suggestion for the use of the same for prevention of mucositis associated with chemoradiotherapy was made. No guideline was possible for any other anti-inflammatory agents due to inadequate and/or conflicting evidence.Conclusions: Of the anti-inflammatory agents studied for oral mucositis, the evidence supports the use of benzydamine mouthwash in the specific populations listed above. Head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment often consists of major surgery followed by adjuvant therapy, which can result in treatment-related side effects, decreased physical function, and diminished quality of life. Perioperative nutrition interventions and early mobilization improve recovery after HNC treatment. However, there are few studies on prehabilitation that include exercise within the HNC surgical care pathway. We have designed a multiphasic exercise prehabilitation intervention for HNC patients undergoing surgical resection with free flap reconstruction. We will use a hybrid effectiveness-implementation study design guided by the RE-AIM framework to address the following objectives: (1) to evaluate intervention benefits through physical function and patient-reported outcome assessments; (2) to determine the safety and feasibility of the prehabilitation intervention; (3) to evaluate the implementation of exercise within the HNC surgical care pathway; and (4) to establish a post-operative screening and referral pathway to exercise oncology resources. The results of this study will provide evidence for the benefits and costs of a multiphasic exercise prehabilitation intervention embedded within the HNC surgical care pathway. Purpose: The primary objective is to systematically review primary studies, such as randomized control trials (RCTs), feasibility, exploratory, and case studies; and the secondary objective is to evaluate all secondary articles, such as reviews, guidelines, and editorials, relevant to the use of StrataXRT for the prevention and/or management of radiation dermatitis (RD) in cancer patients. Methods: A literature search was conducted up to February 26, 2023, for articles investigating the use of StrataXRT for the prevention and treatment of RD, in the following databases: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Google Scholar. The keywords “StrataXRT”, “dermatitis”, “radiotherapy”, and “radiation” were used to identify relevant articles. Results: Twenty-seven articles from 2018 to 2022 were identified to fulfill the inclusion criteria of this review, of which nine are primary studies and 18 are secondary papers. Significant heterogeneity was observed in the current literature studying the effects of StrataXRT, making it difficult to make cross-trial comparisons. There is a suggestion of the efficacy of StrataXRT in the prevention and treatment of RD. Conclusion: The findings of this review recommend further adequately powered RCTs with robust methodology including patient and clinician assessments to determine the efficacy of StrataXRT in preventing and treating RD. Purpose: Although identified as a key competency domain and a needed area of professional development, interpersonal communication in breast cancer care patient navigation is understudied. Moreover, the patient-navigator relationship may be influenced by the interpersonal communication skills and behaviors of the patient navigator. This paper reports on the interpretation step of a concept mapping study, where key stakeholders shared their perspectives on six identified interpersonal communication components of breast cancer care patient navigation. Methods: This study utilized concept mapping, a community-engaged mixed method approach. After conducting brainstorming, sorting, and concept mapping analysis, a six-cluster concept map of interpersonal communication in breast cancer care patient navigation was identified. Interpretation sessions with each participant group (patients, patient navigators, administrators) allowed both naming and more in-depth exploration of the six clusters. The sessions were led by a facilitator, the PI, and were audio recorded and transcribed. Results: Six 2-h interpretation sessions were conducted with 21 participants, including patients with breast cancer, breast cancer patient navigators (lay or medically trained), and patient navigation administrators from Western Pennsylvania. Through a group consensus process, the six clusters were named. Participants identified that all six identified components were essential to patient navigation, but the ability to build patient-centered trust and relationships and maintain professional communication were the most impactful components of the patient-navigator relationship. Conclusion: These findings validate the importance of interpersonal skills and behaviors of patient navigators in breast cancer care. Introduction: Men who receive androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer (PCa) are a vulnerable falls population due to the side effects of treatment. The purpose of this paper is to determine the cost-effectiveness of exercise in preventing falls and fractures for this high-risk population in Australia.Methods: A decision analytic model was constructed to evaluate the cost utility of an exercise intervention compared to usual care from a health system perspective. The intervention comprised two 1-h sessions of supervised exercise per week over 1 year for men with non-metastatic PCa receiving curative radiation therapy and ADT. A Markov model simulated the transition between five health states: (1) at risk of falling; (2) at recurrent risk of falling; (3) fracture (minor or major); (4) non-fracture injury (minor or major); and (5) death. Model inputs including transition probabilities and utility scores were obtained from published meta-analyses, and costs were drawn from Australian data sources (e.g. Medical Benefits Schedule). The model time horizon was 3 years, and costs and effects were discounted at 5% annual rate. Costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were aggregated and compared between the intervention and control to calculate incremental net monetary benefit (iNMB). Uncertainty in the results was explored using deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses (PSA).Results: At a willingness-to-pay of AU$50,000 per QALY, the exercise intervention dominated, as it was less costly and more effective than usual care. The iNMB was $3010 per patient. The PSA showed a 58% probability the intervention was cost-effective.Conclusion: This is the first modelled economic evaluation of exercise for men with PCa. Purpose: Living with untreated prostate cancer (PCa) may cause anxiety and uncertainty in men undergoing active surveillance (AS). Developing a psychosocial support program for such patients might promote psychosocial well-being and patient engagement. This review aims to identify interventions with the potential to influence the psychosocial burden of prostate cancer patients undergoing AS.Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist. A systematic search was conducted in six databases and included publications dating from 2009. All available and eligible evidence was included in this review.Results: After screening 2824 articles, 12 studies were included in the review: nine quantitative, one qualitative, and two mixed method papers. The relative strength of these studies was limited and the quality of most was moderate.Conclusions: The described interventions can be categorized into three major themes: information and education, coping and (psycho)social support, and lifestyle. Psychosocial support for men undergoing AS should entail involvement of family and spouse during the decision-making process, tailored information about PCa treatments, risks, benefits, protocols, lifestyle adjustments, and complementary and alternative medicine. Assessment and promotion of effective coping and self-management strategies are recommended. Healthcare providers should actively promote physical activity and nutritional improvements. Physical activity programs may also be helpful in facilitating peer support, which is especially important for men with limited social support. Ovarian cancer (OC) can significantly impact sexual functioning beyond initial treatment and into survivorship. However, research suggests that the information and advice women want on this topic may not be readily provided by health professionals (HPs). We explored the psychological and sexual wellbeing of a sample of Australian women diagnosed with OC, to inform the development of effective, targeted sexuality resources. This paper presents a subset of our findings. Participants were recruited nationwide via social media, print advertisement and the database of a support organisation, Ovarian Cancer Australia. Self-reported demographic and clinical survey data were collected including perceptions of the availability and adequacy of sexuality support post-OC. Participants (n = 98) were on average 52.8 years old and 5.5 years post-diagnosis. A minority (22%) reported that the impact of OC on their sexuality was discussed by HPs; and 46% were satisfied with that discussion. Approximately half (52%) had wanted to discuss sexuality concerns with a HP during treatment and 43% still felt the need for this discussion. Open-ended responses revealed the need for more information that was detailed and specified what to expect post-diagnosis. Shortcomings of HPs in addressing sexuality were also revealed. This research provides further evidence that sexual health remains inadequately addressed in OC care across the trajectory for the majority of women, and is an area of unmet need. Purpose: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) describe eating as more than a physical activity for nutrition and calories. After treatment for HNC, patients report a changed social experience around food, with eating and drinking in front of family and friends depicted as a challenge. However, there is limited research exploring how patients with HNC adapt and cope with social eating difficulties. This study aims to explore patients' experiences and perceptions of social eating and drinking following treatment for HNC.Methods: A qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews was employed to understand the experiences of social eating of patients living with and beyond HNC. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to inductively develop key themes from the data.Results: Fourteen interviews were conducted with patients, and two key themes were identified: (1) "Social eating became a conscious process" and (2) "Strategies to maximise social eating participation". To maximise social eating enjoyment, patients attempted to minimise the attention on their eating function and the fuss created around food. Patients with HNC established psychological and cognitive adaptations to manage expectations and promote positive participation in social eating.Conclusion: This paper identifies key barriers limiting or diminishing social eating for patients with HNC; including being self-conscious, lack of understanding from others and functional issues with eating and drinking. This research highlights the need to raise awareness of social eating challenges and for the social dimensions of eating to be addressed through family-centred, supportive holistic interventions implemented early in the patient's cancer journey. Purpose: Body image is a psychological dimension of the experience of cancer, which varies along the clinical features of the disease itself and in its phases, as well as its effects in terms of functioning and quality of life. In 2012, Supportive Care in Cancer published a review addressing the relevance, application, and instruments of body image assessment for oncological settings. Since then, many research papers have been published on this topic and new questionnaires for assessing body image in oncology are now available. This contribution aims to offer both researchers and clinicians an updated review of body image assessment tools.Methods: We searched PubMed, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, and Scopus databases, which allowed us to identify pertinent papers, classified according to the body image tool to which they refer. We then extracted the characteristics and the psychometric properties from each study.Results: From the 657 initial records, 23 papers met the selection criteria referring to 8 body image measurements. Although increasing in number and being the subject of a growing number of studies, these papers are still not exhaustive with respect to the verified psychometric properties. In particular, it is worth noting that their applicability to all types of cancer is limited and that a focus on women with breast cancer prevails.Conclusion: A complete validation (including a study of all types of validity and reliability) and an indication of the case results are not currently available for any of the eight instruments described. However, studies designed to apply body image assessment tools to patients other than those experiencing breast cancer as well to cultural contexts other than English-speaking countries, are increasing. Purpose: Social service counseling (SSC) is an important instrument to support cancer patients, for example, regarding legal support, or rehabilitation. Several countries have established on-site SSC in routine care. Previous analyses have shown that SSC utilization varies across cancer centers. This analysis investigates patient and center-level predictors that explain variations in SSC utilization between centers. Methods: Logistic multilevel analysis was performed with data from 19,865 prostate cancer patients from 102 prostate cancer centers in Germany and Switzerland. Data was collected within an observational study between July 2016 and June 2020 using survey (online and paper) and tumor documentation. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient for the null model implies that 51% of variance in SSC utilization is attributable to the center a patient is treated in. Patients aged 80 years and older, with higher education, private insurance, without comorbidities, localized intermediate risk, and undergoing androgen deprivation therapy before study inclusion were less likely to utilize SSC. Undergoing primary radiotherapy, active surveillance, or watchful waiting as compared to prostatectomy was associated with a lower likelihood of SSC utilization. Significant negative predictors at the center level were university hospital, center's location in Switzerland, and a short period of certification. Conclusion: The results show that patient and center characteristics contribute to explaining the variance in SSC utilization in prostate cancer centers to a large extent. The findings may indicate different organizational processes in the countries included and barriers in the sectoral structure of the healthcare system. The wellbeing of clinicians delivering cancer care needs to be considered and included in recovery roadmaps from the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, we refer to a report undertaken by Cancer Australia to review and reflect on the impact of COVID-19 in the delivery of cancer care. The report focused on post COVID-19 recovery and asked 3 questions: What changed? What has been the impact of that change? And how can high-value changes be embedded or enhanced? We suggest the same three questions should also be asked of cancer care clinicians. Using the three Cancer Australia questions, we draw from clinicians' insights collected through the Victorian COVID-19 Cancer Network (VCCN) and from the wider health professional literature. We summarise key features of the COVID-19 experience for cancer care clinicians, highlighting moral distress, fatigue and disrupted practice. We then discuss how pandemic-related ethical values might guide health leaders and administrators to balance support for clinician wellbeing with ongoing delivery of cancer care for patients. Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the status and significantly influencing factors of treatment and prognosis perceptions among advanced cancer patients based on patient-reported outcome. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at two tertiary A general hospitals. From June to September 2019, 300 patients were invited and 292 of them participated in this study. Except for 9 invalid questionnaires, 283 pen-paper questionnaires including sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, Chinese Version of Prognosis and Treatment Perception Questionnaire, Herth Hope Index, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were well completed. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation test, logistic regression analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were applied for analysis. Results: One hundred seventy-five (61.8%) advanced cancer patients reported inaccurate treatment perception. Prognosis perception scored 87.9 ± 13.72 indicating a middle level of prognosis perception. Fourteen (4.9%), 138 (48.8%), and 131 (46.3%) patients presented low, middle, and high prognosis perception levels, respectively. In patients, without spouse and religion beliefs, received chemoradiotherapy, diagnosed as cancer equal to or less than 1 year, and higher hope level were inaccurate treatment perception's risk factors. Younger age, longer diagnosis time, higher educational level, less support for medical expenses payment, receiving chemoradiotherapy, and lower hope level but more anxiety and depression symptoms were positive predictors of prognosis perception. Conclusions: A majority of advanced cancer patients in this study reported inaccurate treatment and middle level of prognosis perception influencing by objective and subjective factors. Purpose: This review paper aimed to draw together the findings of qualitative research into the symptom experience of adult cancer patients in order to develop a better understanding of symptom experiences following cancer treatment. Methods: Systematic review and meta-synthesis techniques were used to identify, appraise and synthesise the relevant literature. Results: A thematic account of shared symptom experiences reported across papers is presented. Four main themes are discussed: interaction with health services, changing relationships, changing self and coping. In addition the range of symptoms reported across qualitative cancer research is highlighted. Conclusions: Unexpected symptoms can have negative effects on patients who need to be better prepared for long-term symptom experiences. In addition, it is important to acknowledge that patients' symptom experiences do not happen in isolation and should be addressed holistically within the context of patients' lives. Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate scientific production in the field of cancer rehabilitation comparing publication trends and impact factor (IF) among countries. Methods: The PubMed database was searched. Publications numbers and IF were evaluated both as absolute values and after standardization by population and gross domestic product (GDP). A dedicated software was developed to create a relational database containing all information about considered publications (Research Management System). Results: Some 1,743 publications were retrieved from 1967 to 2008. Cancer rehabilitation publications have grown 11.6 times, while the whole field of disease rehabilitation has grown 7.8 times. Breast neoplasms, squamous cell carcinoma, treatment outcome, endosseous dental implantation, follow-up studies, and surgical flaps were the most commonly used keywords. From 1994 to 2008, 946 citations were retrieved: 36.8% came from the European Union (EU) (Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands ranking at the top) and 36.9% from the USA. The highest mean IF was reported for the USA (3.384) followed by Canada (3.265) and Australia (2.643). The EU has a mean IF of 0.839 with the Netherlands ranking first. Canada, Australia, and the USA had the best ratio between IF (sum) and resident population or GDP. Conclusions: Cancer rehabilitation is an expanding area with a growing scientific production. The rapidly ageing population, the higher number of cancer survivors, and the increasing need of resources for the after treatment of cancer patients contribute to explain the interest for this field. Purpose: The aims of this systematic review were to summarize the profile of caregivers accessing cancer helplines, to evaluate caregiver satisfaction with the helpline service, and to review the evidence base of intervention studies testing the efficacy of community-based cancer helplines in improving caregiver health and well-being.Methods: Four electronic databases (Medline, CINAHL, PsychINFO, and EMBASE) were systematically searched to identify relevant literature, including all articles published in English until May 2018. Reference lists of accepted papers were reviewed for the inclusion of additional potentially relevant articles, gray literature was excluded.Results: Forty-five publications met the inclusion criteria for this review. Forty-one papers reported on the proportion of caregivers accessing cancer helplines. Twenty-six studies described demographic and clinical characteristics of caregivers and eight reported on call characteristics. Reasons for contacting the service were stated in 21 studies and caregiver satisfaction with the helpline service was assessed in 12 articles. Fourteen studies investigated specific topics of interest (e.g., prevalence of sleep problems, distress screening, or clinical trial participation). Two randomized controlled trials examined the efficacy of cancer helplines in improving caregiver outcomes, with findings showing interventions to be effective in reducing distress and unmet needs, and in increasing positive adjustment.Conclusions: There is limited scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of cancer helplines to improve caregivers' health and well-being. While all cancer patients face a bewildering array of treatments, side effects, and emotions, several researchers have shown that African American women with breast cancer experience greater stress and burdens because of unmet supportive needs associated with psychological distress, financial distress, and lower physical/functional well-being. Social support has been shown to improve health outcomes for African American breast cancer patients. The purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning of social support among African American women diagnosed with breast cancer. A total of 47 African American women with breast cancer participated in the in-depth qualitative interviews. Key findings indicate that social support was received in the context of the stability of the extended family network. Moreover, social support was received in the context of distributing the social support received among many members in their personal networks and that social support was only received on patient's own terms. The findings of this paper provide an understanding to the inter-relational and cultural meanings of receiving support by diverse cancer patients. In addition, the findings of this paper have implications for health care professionals working with African American breast cancer patients in understanding how social support can be received. Objective: This study aims to perform an evidence-based review on the quantitative data regarding coping processes related to posttraumatic growth in the field of oncology to facilitate understanding of posttraumatic growth in oral cavity cancer (OCC) patients.Material and Methods: Pubmed, Medline, and PsycINFO were used for the search and the reference list checked for each selected article. Full articles meeting the inclusion criteria were retrieved. Only English articles were included.Results: The initial search yielded 934 publications; 64 "potentially relevant papers" and 21 "effective" papers formed the basis of this review. Personality traits and social support lead to development of positive coping methods in cancer patients. Overriding influences are benefit finding and meaning making. Specific coping processes were identified to be significantly associated with posttraumatic growth in patients suffering from different cancers and a need for additional prospective research regarding specific processes and outcomes among oral cavity cancer patients. A proposed theoretical model based on the evidence of management of other cancer research fields is suggested for patients with OCC.Conclusion: An evidence-based review of coping strategies related to posttraumatic growth was performed which identified key coping strategies and factors that enhance coping processes. A conceptual model of coping strategies to enhance posttraumatic growth in OCC patients based on the scientific evidence attained is suggested to provide a more holistic approach to OCC management.
