We present an ultra-high frequency radio frequency identification based wireless communication set-up for paper-based point-of-care diagnostic applications, based on a sensing radio frequency identification chip. Paper provides a low-cost, disposable platform for ease of fluidic handling without bulky instrumentation, and is thus ideally suited for point-ofcare applications; however, result communication – a crucial aspect for healthcare to be implemented effectively – is still lacking. Printing of radio frequency identification antennas and electronic circuitry for sensing on paper are presented, with read out of the results using a radio frequency identification reader illustrated, demonstrating the feasibility of developing integrated, all-printed solutions for point-of-care diagnosis in resource-limited settings.

Electrophoretic display (EPD) has been widely used in e-paper applications because of its flexibility, low power consumption, good sunlight visibility. The commercial success of monochromic EPD has boosted the development of full- color EPD to further satisfy people’s demand for various applications. However, many challenges shall be overcome before commercializing it. In this paper, we will introduce the EPD’s fundamental operation, the design of driving waveform for optimizing the opto-electronic performance, and the strategies for achieving full-color EPD as well as a color EPD prototype fabricated by transfer method.

Conservation of cultural heritage treasures is the most important issue for transferring knowledge to the public through the next generation of students, academics, and researchers. Although this century is authenticating e-books and information by means of electronic text, still historical manuscripts as content as well as objects are the main original recourses of keeping a record of this transformation. The current work focuses on cleaning paper samples by the application of pulsed light, which is interventional. Experiments carried out using paper samples that are artificially colonized with Ulocladium chartarum. Paper is treated by Nd:YAG laser light. The available wavelength is 1064 nm, at various fluences, repetition rates and number of pulses. Two types of paper are stained with fungi colonies, which grow on substrates of clean paper, as well as on paper with ink text. The first type of paper is Whatman No.1056, which is closer to pure cellulose. The second type of paper is a page of a cultural heritage book published in 1926. Cleaning is performed using laser irradiation, thus defining the damage threshold of each sample. The treatment on paper Watman showed a yellowing, especially on areas with high concentration of fungi. The second sample was more durable to the exposure, performing the best results at higher fluences. Eventually, the paper samples are characterized, with optical microscopy and SEM/EDX analyses, prior to and after cleaning.

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices decorated with ZnO nanospherical (nanoSPs) aggregates (ZnO-μPAD) for glucose detection have been fabricated. ZnO nanoSPs were prepared by wet chemical synthesis and integrated on the optimized geometry of ZnO-μPAD has 0.2 and 0.4 mm of channel width and length, respectively. Glucose detection measurements were based on electrochemical and infrared transmission measurements. The glucose concentrations were adjusted as 5, 6.5, and 9 mmol, i.e. typical glucose level for normal, pre-diabetes and diabetes, in a mixture of ringer lactate as simulated biological fluid and red blood cells. ZnO nanoSPs in this study possess an average aggregate size of 160 nm formed by clustered ~ 18 nm crystallite size and ordered porous matrix as well as a surface area of 15 m2·g-1.The separation process of the glucose sample on ZnO-μPAD requires approximately 45 s. The glucose detection results show that both electrochemical-based and FTIR-based measurements perform a linear measurement system (R2 of 0.81 to 0.99) with a relatively high sensitivity. A linearly decreasing impedance spanning from 2.2 – 0.6 Ohm and linearly increasing ΔIR transmission spanning from 3 – 19% are obtained for glucose level ranging from 5 – 9 mmol.

This paper will review the origins and state of the art in paper-based electronics, suggesting the stage is set for future promising applications. Current interest in paper-based electronics can trace its roots to recent developments in paper-based microfluidics. With a need to improve the reliability and sensitivity of paperbased microfluidics for certain tasks, there were natural efforts to begin embedding sensing electrodes into microfluidic devices. Recognizing the general benefits of paper as an advanced material (e.g., its environmental friendliness, bendable nature, and low cost), efforts in paper-based electronics also began to take a life of their own with demonstrations of transistors, batteries and devices for energy storage, energy harvesting, sensors to improve situational awareness, acoustics, and displays. The state-of-the-art paper-based electronic devices have benefited and will continue to profit from technologies for printing and transferring electronic functionality onto the surfaces of paper-based substrates. Nonetheless, the authors suggest that many future promising applications will go beyond using paper as a carrier/substrate for electronic components to explore tuning of the electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties of the paper itself. With these technical advances, paper-based electronics will move closer to economically viable killer applications.

In this work we present a promising method for fabrication of conductive tracks on paper based substrates by laser assisted reduction of Graphene Oxide (GO). Printed electronics on paper based substrates is be coming more popular due to lower cost and recyclability. Fabrication of conductive tracks is of great importance where metal, carbon and polymer inks are commonly used. An emerging option is reduced graphene oxide (r-GO), which can be a good conductor. Here we have evaluated reduction of GO by using a 532 nm laser source, showing promising results with a decrease of sheet resistance from >100 M Ω/Sqr for unreduced GO down to 126 Ω/Sqr. without any observable damage to the paper substrates.

The UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensors and Metrology is one of four flagship initiatives in the UK National of Quantum Technology Program. As part of a 20-year vision it translates laboratory demonstrations to deployable practical devices, with game-changing miniaturized components and prototypes that transform the state-of-the-art for quantum sensors and metrology. It brings together experts from the Universities of Birmingham, Glasgow, Nottingham, Southampton, Strathclyde and Sussex, NPL and currently links to over 15 leading international academic institutions and over 70 companies to build the supply chains and routes to market needed to bring 10–1000x improvements in sensing applications. It seeks, and is open to, additional partners for new application development and creates a point of easy open access to the facilities and supply chains that it stimulates or nurtures.

Reaction dynamics involving subdiffusive species is an interesting topic with only few known results, especially when the motion of different species is characterized by different anomalous diffusion exponents. Here we study the reaction dynamics of a (sub)diffusive particle surrounded by a sea of (sub)diffusive traps in one dimension. Under some reasonable assumptions we find rigorous results for the asymptotic survival probability of the particle in most cases, but have not succeeded in doing so for a particle that diffuses normally while the anomalous diffusion exponent of the traps is smaller than 2/3.© (2005) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Fluctuations in diversity and extinction sizes are discussed and compared for two dierent, individual-basedmodels of biological coevolution. Both models display power-law distributions for various quantities of evolu-tionary interest, such as the lifetimes of individual species, the quiet periods between evolutionary upheavalslarger than a given cuto, and the sizes of extinction ev ents. Time series of the diversity and measures of thesize of extinctions give rise to ”icker noise. Surprisingly, the power-law behaviors of the probability densities ofquiet periods in the two models dier, while the distributions of the lifetimes of individual species are the same.Keywords: Biological evolution, Coevolution, Flicker noise, Fluctuations, Power-law distributions 1. INTRODUCTION Biological evolution presents many problems concerning highly nonlinear, nonequilibrium systems of interactingentities that are well suited for study by methods from statistical mechanics. Among these problems are those concerned with coevolution :thesimulta-neous evolution of many species, whose mutual interactions produce a constantly changing Þtness landscape .Throughout this process, new species are created and old species go extinct. A question that is still debated inevolutionary biology is whether evolu tion on the macroscaleproceeds gradually or in “ts and starts, as suggestedby Eldredge and Gould.

State of the art smart materials such as piezo ceramics or electroactive polymers cannot feature both, mechanical stiffness and high active strain. Moreover, properties like low density, high mechanical stiffness and high strain at the same time driven by low energy play an increasingly important role for their future application. Carbon nanotubes (CNT), show this behavior. Their active behavior was observed 1999 the first time using paper-like mats made of CNT. Therefore the CNT-papers are electrical charged within an electrolyte thus forming a doublelayer. The measured deflection of CNT material is based on the interaction between the charged high surface area formed by carbon nanotubes and ions provided by the electrolyte. Although CNT-papers have been extensively analyzed as well at the macro-scale as nano-scale there is still no generally accepted theory for the actuation mechanism. This paper focuses on investigations of the actuation mechanisms of CNT-papers in comparison to vertically aligned CNT-arrays. One reason of divergent results found in literature might be attributed to different types of CNT samples. While CNT-papers represent architectures of short CNTs which need to bridge each other to form the dimensions of the sample, the continuous CNTs of the array feature a length of almost 3 mm, along which the experiments are carried out. Both sample types are tested within an actuated tensile test set-up under different conditions. While the CNT-papers are tested in water-based electrolytes with comparably small redox-windows the hydrophobic CNT-arrays are tested in ionic liquids with comparatively larger redox-ranges. Furthermore an in-situ micro tensile test within an SEM is carried out to prove the optimized orientation of the MWCNTs as result of external load. It was found that the performance of CNT-papers strongly depends on the test conditions. However, the CNT-arrays are almost unaffected by the conditions showing active response at negative and positive voltages. A micro alignment as result of tensile stress can be proven. A comparison of both results point out that the actuation mechanism strongly depends on the weakest bonds of the architectures: Van-der-Waals-bonds vs. covalent C-bonds

The modification of graphene’s properties is essential for its applications. During the device preparation and morphology characterization, graphene is usually irradiated by electron beam. The process may induce defects such as damage and doping in graphene. Moreover, when the irradiated graphene is exposed in air, the defects will adsorb impurities, such as gas atoms, atomic groups, or molecules, leading to changes of the properties of graphene. Therefore, it is important to study the evolution of the properties of the irradiated graphene exposed in air. In this paper, the time evolution of the Raman spectra of graphene after irradiated by electron beam was measured. It is found that D peak appears after irradiation, indicating the formation of defects. The Raman spectra at different time after irradiation show redshifts and blueshifts of the peaks, because the carriers was p-type at first and then became n-type finally. It signifies that air exposure has changed the conducting properties of the irradiated graphene. The results suggest that air exposure has significant effect on defect engineering of graphene.

In this paper, we have experimentally demonstrated the engineering of semi-metal single layer CVD Graphene’s bandgap by decorating with randomly distributed ZnO nano-seed grown by sonication of Zinc acetate dehydrate. The proximity of nanoparticles and Graphene breaks Graphene’s sublattice symmetry and opens-up a bandgap. The 2-D/G ratio of Raman spectroscopy of decorated Graphene along with a peak at 432.39 cm-1 confirmed presence of ZnO on single layer Graphene. The introduced bandgap was measured from the slope of Arrhenius plot. Graphene with significant bandgap introduced by the proposed methods could be used for devices intended for digital and logic applications.

Hybrid composites with organic and inorganic materials are drawing interest to researchers by adopting advantages of organic materials and inorganic materials. Cellulose is biocompatible, cheap, environmentally friendly, renewable and lightweight material. Nano crystalline form of cellulose (CNC) is a needle like rigid structure with a very high mechanical strength. Graphene, crystalline forms of carbon, provides basic platform for many electronic and optoelectronic devices. This paper introduces the fabrication process of cellulose nanocrystal/graphene oxide blended nanocomposite film. Cellulose nanocrystal/graphene oxide nanocomposite films are prepared by mixing graphene oxide (GO) into cellulose nanocrystal suspension using ultrasonic homogenizer. Scanning electron microscopy is used to study morphology. Optical properties of the composite was characterized to evaluate the change in transparency after addition of GO in CNC.

The objectives of this study are to prepare and investigate the optical and tensile properties of the obtained cellulose nanopaper structures. A ball mill mechanical pretreatment combined with a wet pulverization process by using an aqueous counter collision machine were used to extract CNFs from softwood and hardwood bleached kraft pulps. Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) nanopapers were fabricated via vacuum filtration and oven drying method. The mechanical and optical properties of the fabricated nanopaper were investigated by using tensile test and UV-vis spectrometer. Results have shown that the softwood sample demonstrated better mechanical properties than the hardwood sample. UV-vis transmittance measurements did not indicate significant differences.

Graphene/oxide composite structures are attracting increasing attention for many advanced applications. In the present work, mesoporous layers composed of TiO2 nanoparticles and graphene at various concentrations have been coated on conductive glass substrates. They have been tested for the photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol used as a model compound of an eco-persistent pollutant dilute in water. The formation of intermediate degradation products, namely, hydroquinone and benzoquinone, has been followed. The results show the high photocatalytic activity of the layers and a beneficial effect of graphene for an optimum concentration of 1.2 wt. %. The decrease in the activity observed at higher graphene content is assigned to the light absorption by this component. The key parameters for the enhancement of the photocatalytic performance are discussed.

Increased depletion of fossil fuels along with global warming and climate change made the society to think about alternate green and sustainable energy sources and better energy storage devices. Extensive research has been performed on the development of solar cells, fuel cells, Lithium- ion battery and supercapacitors to combat the green house effect and its consequences, and to meet the increased energy crisis. Supercapacitors, also known as electrochemical capacitors are gained a great attention because of their pulse power supply, long cycle life (>100,000), simple principle and high dynamic of charge propagation. Its greater power density than lithium- ion battery and much larger energy density than conventional capacitors brought super capacitors to a promising energy storage device to meet the increased energy demands. Here we demonstrate supercapacitor electrode materials with graphene oxide (electric double layer capacitor) and α-MnO 2 nanomaterial (pseudo-capacitor), as well as composite of these materials, which means that the bulk of the material undergoes a fast redox reaction to provide the capacitive response and they exhibit superior specific energies in addition to the carbon-based supercapacitors (double-layer capacitors). A simple soft chemical route is utilized to synthesize graphene oxide, α-MnO 2 and graphene oxide-MnO 2 composite. The phase and the structure of the synthesized materials are studied using X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The functional group and the presence of impurities are understood from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The capacitive properties of the graphene oxide, graphene oxide - MnO 2 nanocomposite and α-MnO 2 are tested with the help of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge – discharge techniques using 1 M Na 2 SO 4 in aqueous solution as electrolyte. It was found that graphene oxide - MnO 2 nanocomposite shows better electrochemical behaviour compared to individual graphene oxide and α-MnO 2 nanomaterial.

Pure extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is mixed with cheaper edible oils and samples are kept inside clear glass containers, while a 785nm Raman system is used to take measurements as Raman probe is placed against glass container. Several types of oils at various concentrations of adulteration are used. Ratios of peak intensities are used to analyze raw data, which allows for quick, easy, and accurate analysis. While conventional Raman measurements of EVOO may take as long as 2 minutes, all measurements reported here are for integration times of 15s. It is found that adulteration of EVOO with cheaper oils is detectable at concentrations as low as 5% for all oils used in this study.

Despite often illustrated as a perfect two-dimensional sheet, real graphene sample is not always flat. Nanostructures can be occurred on graphene sheet, especially for epitaxial graphene. The nanostructures alter the electrical and mechanical properties of graphene. This is crucial for epitaxial graphene since its main potential is in the electronics and optics application. This study investigates nanostructures on epitaxial graphene by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, which is a technique that can provide Raman spectra with great spatial resolution, exceeding the diffraction limit of light. The results suggest that the compressive strain on nanoridges is weaker compared to neighbor flat area, supporting the ‘ridge as compressive strain relaxation’ mechanism. TERS measurement of nanoridges on epitaxial graphene microisland also indicates that the ‘Si vapor trapping’ mechanism for ridge formation is unlikely to occur.

The long range objectives of this research are to develop and demonstrate the use of graphene-nanoparticle composites as a high sensitivity, rapid response electronic nose for gas sensing in energy applications. Graphene based device structures suitable for temperatures as high as 1000 °C are targeted. The scope of work includes: a) development of procedures for controllable nucleation and growth of nanoparticles on graphene surfaces, b) fabrication graphene-nanoparticle composite sensors, c) measurement of electrical properties of graphene-nanoparticle composites, and d) determination of sensor characteristics (selectivity and sensitivity). The graphene films are synthesized on 6H-SiC (0001) surfaces using a halogen based plasma etching followed by rapid thermal annealing in atmospheric pressure Ar or under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Lithography free methods are then used to produce simple sensor structures consisting of interdigitated fingers. This is followed by the nucleation of either Ag, Au, Pt, or Ir nanoparticles on the graphene surfaces using solution based techniques. Atomic force microscopy is used to characterize the particle size distribution of the nucleated nanoparticles. Electrical properties of the graphene and graphenenanoparticle composites are characterized using two point current-voltage measurements. Gas sensor response as a function of temperature is characterized for H 2 in Ar gas mixtures.

In this paper, a real-time implementation of pitch shifting with use of phase vocoder algorithm is presented. The goal was to create a system that would allow to process audio signal in real time with use of a general purpose microcontroller. The task was a challenge due to relative complexity of the algorithm and limited computational capacity of the microcontroller, whose architecture is by nature much more universal than that of dedicated digital signal processors. The results of experiments with the developed system are presented and discussed in the paper.

Modern physics experiments requires construction of advanced, modular measurement systems for data processing and registration purposes. Components are often designed in one of the common mechanical and electrical standards, e.g. VME or uTCA. The paper is focused on measurement systems using FPGAs as data processing blocks, especially for plasma diagnostics using GEM detectors with data quality monitoring aspects. In the article is proposed standardized model of HDL FPGA firmware implementation, for use in a wide range of different measurement system. The effort was made in term of flexible implementation of data quality monitoring along with source data dynamic selection. In the paper is discussed standard measurement system model followed by detailed model of FPGA firmware for modular measurement systems. Considered are both: functional blocks and data buses. In the summary, necessary blocks and signal lines are described. Implementation of firmware following the presented rules should provide modular design, with ease of change different parts of it. The key benefit is construction of universal, modular HDL design, that can be applied in different measurement system with simple adjustments.

Transparent electrodes are one of the basic elements of various electronic components. The paper presents the preliminary results related to novel method of ultrasonic spray coating used for fabrication of transparent flexible electrodes. Experiments were conducted by means of specially made laboratory setup composed of ultrasonic spray generator and XYZ plotter. In the first part of the paper diverse solvents were used to determine the crucial technological parameters such as atomization voltage and fluid flow velocity. Afterwards paint containing carbon nanotubes suspended in the two solvent system was prepared and deposited on the polyethylene terephthalate foil. Thickness, roughness and electrical measurements were performed to designate the relations of technological parameters of ultrasonic spray coating on thickness, roughness, sheet resistance and optical transmission of fabricated samples.

For the single-frequency GPS receiver, ionospheric delay is an important factor affecting the positioning performance. There are many kinds of ionospheric correction methods, common models are Bent model, IRI model, Klobuchar model, Ne Quick model and so on. The US Global Positioning System (GPS) uses the Klobuchar coefficients transmitted in the satellite signal to correct the ionospheric delay error for a single frequency GPS receiver, but this model can only reduce the ionospheric error of about 50% in the mid-latitudes. In the Beidou system, the accuracy of the correction delay is higher. Therefore, this paper proposes a method that using BD grid information to correct GPS ionospheric delay to improve the ionospheric delay for the BDS/GPS compatible positioning receiver. In this paper, the principle of ionospheric grid algorithm is introduced in detail, and the positioning accuracy of GPS system and BDS/GPS compatible positioning system is compared and analyzed by the real measured data. The results show that the method can effectively improve the positioning accuracy of the receiver in a more concise way.

One of the most difficult problem in the use of artificial neural networks is the computational capacity. Although large search engine companies own specially developed hardware to provide the necessary computing power, for the conventional user only remains the state of the art method, which is the use of a graphic processing unit (GPU) as a computational basis. Although these processors are well suited for large matrix computations, they need massive energy. Therefore a new processor on the basis of a field programmable gate array (FPGA) has been developed and is optimized for the application of deep learning. This processor is presented in this paper. The processor can be adapted for a particular application (in this paper to an organic farming application). The power consumption is only a fraction of a GPU application and should therefore be well suited for energy-saving applications.

Even the best thermal imagers available today achieve only a fraction of the range performance that is theoretically possible with a given objective lens. Diffraction from the finite aperture of a thermal camera reduces the contrast of high spatial frequencies as well as limiting the maximum spatial frequency in the image. Reclaiming the high frequency contrast can substantially extend range over what is normally thought of as diffraction limited performance. As explained in this paper, the requirements for achieving extended range are 1) small pitch large format focal planes, 2) deep charge well capacities, and 3) intensive deconvolution processing. We will call this combination PWP for pitch, well capacity, and processing which can theoretically increase range performance by a factor of 1.7 for an increase of 70%. In this paper, we also estimate the improved range performance that results from increasing the electron well capacity of long wave infrared cameras. The three technologies needed for a significant advance in thermal imaging are all available today: these include small pixel high density focal planes, deep wells or digital read outs, and digital processors. We hope this paper excites interest in combining those technologies to provide a significant advance in thermal imager performance.

3D printing is a high freedom fabrication technique. Any components, which designed by 3D design software or scanned from real parts, can be printed. The printing materials include metals, plastics and biocompatible materials etc. Especially for those high transmission components used in optical system or biomedical field can be printed, too. High transmission lens increases the performances of optical system. And high transmission cover or shell using in biomedical field helps observers to see the structures inside, such as brain, bone, and vessels. But the surface of printed components is not transparent, even the inside layer is transparent. If we increase the transmittance of surface, the components which fabricated by 3D printing process could have high transmission. In this paper, we using illuminating and polishing methods to improve the transmittance of printing surface. The illuminating time is the experiment parameters in illuminating method. The roughness and transmission of printing components are the evaluating targets. A 3D printing machine, Stratasys Connex 500, has been used to print high transmittance components in this paper. The surface transmittance of printing components is increasing above 80 % by polishing method.

The advantage of 3D printing technique is flexible in design and fabrication. Using 3D printing technique, the traditional manufacturing limitations are not considered. The optical lens is the key component in an optical system. The traditional process to manufacture optical plastic lens is injection molding. However injection molding is only suitable for plastics lens, it cannot fabricate optical and mechanical components at same time. The assembly error of optical system can be reduced effectively with fabricating optical and mechanical components at same time. The process of printing optical and mechanical components simultaneously is proposed in previous papers, but the optical surface of printing components is not transparent. If we increase the transmittance of the optical surface, the printing components which fabricated by 3D printing process could be high transmission. Therefore, precise diamond turning technique has been used to turning the surface of 3D printing optical lens in this paper. The precise diamond turning techniques could process surfaces of components to meet the requirements of optical system. A 3D printing machine, Stratasys Connex 500, and a precise diamond turning machine, Precitech Freeform705XG, have been used in this paper, respectively. The dimension, roughness, transmission and printing types of 3D printing components have been discussed in this paper. After turning and polishing process, the roughness of 3D printing component is below 0.05 μm and the transmittance increase above 80 %. This optical module can be used in hand-held telescope and other system which need lens and special mechanical structure fabricated simultaneously.

The development of the next generation of multi-domain unmanned semi and fully autonomous C4ISR systems involves a multitude of security concerns and interoperability challenges. Conceptual solutions to capability shortfalls and gaps can be identified through Concept Development and Experimentation (CD and E) cycles. Modelling and Simulation (M and S) is a key tool in supporting unmanned autonomous systems (UAxS) CD and E activities and addressing associated security challenges. This paper serves to illustrate the application of M and S to UAxS development and highlight initiatives made by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) M and S Centre of Excellence (CoE) to facilitate interoperability. The NATO M and S CoE collaborates with other NATO and Nations bodies in order to develop UAxS projects such as the Allied Command for Transformation Counter Unmanned Autonomous Systems (CUAxS) project or the work of Science and Technology Organization (STO) panels. Some initiatives, such as Simulated Interactive Robotics Initiative (SIRI) made the baseline for further developments and to study emerging technologies in M and S and robotics fields. Artificial Intelligence algorithm modelling, Robot Operating Systems (ROS), network operations, cyber security, interoperable languages and related data models are some of the main aspects considered in this paper. In particular, the implementation of interoperable languages like C-BML and NIEM MilOps are discussed in relation to a Command and Control - Simulation Interoperability (C2SIM) paradigm. All these technologies are used to build a conceptual architecture to support UAxS CD and E.In addition, other projects that the NATO M and S CoE is involved in, such as the NATO Urbanization Project could provide credible future operational environments and benefit UAxS project development, as dual application of UAxS technology in large urbanized areas.In conclusion, this paper contains a detailed overview regarding how applying Modelling and Simulation to support CD and E activities is a valid approach to develop and validate future capabilities requirements in general and next generation UAxS.

MEMS based vibrational energy harvesting devices have been a highly researched topic over the past decade. The application targeted in this paper focuses on a leadless pacemaker that will be implanted in the right ventricle of the heart. This paper reports a study of two types of silicon based nanostructures prospective for applications in photonics. The first ones are Ge/Si(001) structures forming at room temperature and reconstructing after annealing at 600°C. Germanium, being deposited from a molecular beam at room temperature on the Si(001) surface, forms a thin granular film composed of Ge particles with sizes of a few nanometers. A characteristic feature of these films is that they demonstrate signs of the 2 x 1 structure in their RHEED patterns. After short-term annealing at 600°C under the closed system conditions, the granular films reconstruct to heterostructures consisting of a Ge wetting layer and oval clusters of Ge. A mixed type c(4x2) + p(2x2) reconstruction typical to the low-temperature MBE (Tgr < 600°C) forms on the wetting layer. Long-term annealing of granular films at the same conditions results in formation of c(4x2)-reconstructed wetting layer typical to high-temperature MBE (Tgr < 600°C) and huge clusters of Ge. The other type of the studied nanostructures is based on Pt silicides. This class of materials is one of the friendliest to silicon technology. But as silicide film thickness reaches a few nanometers, low resistivity becomes of primary importance. Pt3Si has the lowest sheet resistance among the Pt silicides. However, the development of a process of thin Pt3Si films formation is a challenging task. This paper describes formation of a thin Pt3Si/Pt2Si structures at room temperature on poly-Si films. Special attention is paid upon formation of poly-Si and amorphous Si films on Si3N4 substrates at low temperatures.

The OpenOrbiter I spacecraft is the culmination of significant work on reducing the cost levels of a CubeSat-class spacecraft. By redesigning the spacecraft from the ground up, down to the component level, to use readily available electronic and physical components, the cost of CubeSat construction has been significantly reduced. This paper provides an overview of the OpenOrbiter I mission, to date. It then focuses on the benefits that can be provided by the lower-cost, low-risk spacecraft. The paper discusses the prospective utility of this mission paradigm for the defense, homeland security and intelligence communities.

In this research, we focus on vessel detection using the satellite imagery of day/night band (DNB) on Suomi NPP in order to monitor the change of vessel activity on the region of South China Sea. In this paper, we consider the relation between the temporal change of vessel activities and the events on maritime environment based on the vessel traffic density estimation using DNB. DNB is a moderate resolution (350-700m) satellite imagery but can detect the fishing light of fishery boats in night time for every day. The advantage of DNB is the continuous monitoring on wide area compared to another vessel detection and locating system. However, DNB gave strong influence of cloud and lunar refection. Therefore, we additionally used Brightness Temperature at 3.7μm(BT3.7) for cloud information. In our previous research, we construct an empirical vessel detection model that based on the DNB contrast and the estimation of cloud condition using BT3.7. Moreover, we proposed a vessel traffic density estimation method based on empirical model. In this paper, we construct the time temporal density estimation map on South China Sea and East China Sea in order to extract the knowledge from vessel activities change.

This paper examines the measurement of MTF of slant edge targets from airborne imagery. The MTF is calculated by extracting the edge spread function from the slant edge, deriving the line spread function, the performing an FFT to get the MTF. Because characteristics of airborne imagery are not controlled, using edge targets to get the system level MTF present challenges. A method to calculate the MTF from edge targets in airborne imagery is proposed by normalizing the scan lines in the edge spread function and low pass filtering it. An example using air borne imagery is shown and compared with analytical results and laboratory measurements. The paper also examines extracting the effects on the MTF due to image blur from jitter common with air borne imagery.

The measurement of refractive index of very thin films at the order of ten to hundred nanometers is cumbersome and usually requires employing sophisticated techniques such as the spectral ellipsometry. In this paper we describe a simple contact method for measuring the refractive index of thin films. Here we have used the prism-coupling technique for characterizing samples prepared as four-layer slab waveguides. The waveguide resonance condition can be calculated by solving simple analytic transcendental equations for the slab waveguide. Then the captured mode position as a function of cladding thickness is used for probing the refractive index of cladding layer. We used indium-tin-oxide layer on glass as the substrate and polysulfone with known refractive index as the material for testing the method. In the paper we provide the theoretical background of the method, demonstrate the experimental results obtained during the implementation of the technique as well as discuss its main strengths and flaws.

Self-focusing is observed in nonlinear materials owing to the interaction between laser and matter when laser beam propagates. Some of numerical simulation strategies such as the beam propagation method (BPM) based on nonlinear Schrodinger equation and ray tracing method based on Fermat’s principle have applied to simulate the self-focusing process. In this paper we present an iteration nonlinear ray tracing method in that the nonlinear material is also cut into massive slices just like the existing approaches, but instead of paraxial approximation and split-step Fourier transform, a large quantity of sampled real rays are traced step by step through the system with changing refractive index and laser intensity by iteration. In this process a smooth treatment is employed to generate a laser density distribution at each slice to decrease the error caused by the under-sampling. The characteristics of this method is that the nonlinear refractive indices of the points on current slice are calculated by iteration so as to solve the problem of unknown parameters in the material caused by the causal relationship between laser intensity and nonlinear refractive index. Compared with the beam propagation method, this algorithm is more suitable for engineering application with lower time complexity, and has the calculation capacity for numerical simulation of self-focusing process in the systems including both of linear and nonlinear optical media. If the sampled rays are traced with their complex amplitudes and light paths or phases, it will be possible to simulate the superposition effects of different beam. At the end of the paper, the advantages and disadvantages of this algorithm are discussed.

This paper presents a fast calculation method for spherical computer-generated hologram by using a spherical harmonic transform. A three-dimensional (3D) object defined in the 3D Cartesian coordinate system is numerically Fourier transformed with fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). Fourier components on the spherical surface of the radius 1/λ are extracted. The wavefronts on the spherical surface can be calculated from the single spherical Fourier components. This paper reveals the analytical diffraction integral between the spherical Fourier components and the wavefront on the spherical surface. This diffraction integral is expressed in the form of convolution integral on the sphere and can be calculated very fast based on the spherical harmonic transform. By the numerical simulation, the validity and the effectiveness of our proposal has been verified.

Laser ablation micro-propulsion technology is the most promising field in laser propulsion. The specific impulse is the important evaluate indicator of the micro propulsion performance. It represents the impulse generation by consuming unit weight of the working medium. Its accurate measurement can not only help to analyze the mechanism of laser ablation matter, but also help the design of micro laser ablation thruster. This paper presents a measurement method, which can not only obtain the impulse by single pulsed laser ablation the working medium, but also measure the ablation mass, which can directly measure the specific impulse. The method is based on the model of torsion pendulum in vertical direction movement, which is the direction of impulse by pulsed laser ablation and the gravitation direction caused by the loss of the ablation mass, to obtain the corresponding impulse and ablative weight. The paper deduced the measuring principle, pointed out the error and analysed the design principle of the torsion balance, the results show that, according to the torsion angle change due to the impulse by pulsed laser ablation and the mass loss by laser ablation, the maximum angle can be used to calculate the impulse and the stable rotation angle can be used to calculate the loss weight when the torsion period is much greater than four times the width of a single pulse.

This paper describes static Bayesian game models with “Pure” and “Mixed” games for the development of an optimum Program and Technical Baseline (PTB) solution for affordable acquisition of future space systems. The paper discusses System Engineering (SE) frameworks and analytical and simulation modeling approaches for developing the optimum PTB solutions from both the government and contractor perspectives.

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) has recognized the needs for owning the program and technical knowledge within the Air Force concerning the systems being acquired to ensure success. This paper extends the previous work done by the authors [1-2] on the “Resilient Program Technical Baseline Framework for Future Space Systems” and "Portfolio Decision Support Tool (PDST)” to the development and implementation of the Program and Technical Baseline (PTB) Tracking Tool (PTBTL) for the DOD acquisition life cycle. The paper describes the “simplified” PTB tracking model with a focus on the preaward phases and discusses how to implement this model in PDST.

The paper describes the MATLAB (MathWorks) programs that were developed during the REU workshop 1 to implement The Aerospace Corporation developed Unified Game-based Acquisition Framework and Advanced Game - based Mathematical Framework (UGAF-AGMF) and its associated War-Gaming Engine (WGE) models. Each game can be played from the perspectives of the Department of Defense Acquisition Authority (DAA) or of an individual contractor (KTR). The programs also implement Aerospace’s optimum “Program and Technical Baseline (PTB) and associated acquisition” strategy that combines low Total Ownership Cost (TOC) with innovative designs while still meeting warfighter needs. The paper also describes the Bayesian Acquisition War-Gaming approach using Monte Carlo simulations, a numerical analysis technique to account for uncertainty in decision making, which simulate the PTB development and acquisition processes and will detail the procedure of the implementation and the interactions between the games.

This paper describes operational concepts, certification considerations, and initial user evaluations for using an avionics system for low visibility taxi operations. The ability to taxi to/from the runway safely and efficiently in low visibility conditions is becoming increasingly important as airplanes and aircrews become equipped and approved for low visibility landing and takeoff. Typically in the United States, any surface operations below 1200 ft. Runway Visual Range (RVR) generally encourage the airport authority to have an approved Low Visibility Operations / Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (LVO/SMGCS) plan which specifies certain markings, signs, lighting, and controls in the airport movement area. Operations below 600 ft. RVR, or 500 ft. RVR under U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Order 8000.94 enablement, require additional infrastructure in movement and non-movement areas and may also require Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE or ASDE-X) or a suitable substitute1 to allow the ground controllers to adequately monitor surface traffic. Surface operations below 300 ft. RVR are generally precluded (or need extra controls such as the use of a “follow-me” truck). The operational concepts described in this paper show how using on-board systems based on synthetic and enhanced vision systems may substitute for or augment an airport’s existing infrastructure. These on-board systems along with proper additional mitigations under the LVO/SMGCS concept of Protected Low Visibility Taxi Routes (PLOVTR) would enable an appropriately equipped aircraft and qualified crew to safely taxi in low visibility conditions.

Computer security vulnerabilities span across large, enterprise networks and have to be mitigated by security engineers on a routine basis. Presently, security engineers will assess their “risk posture” through quantifying the number of vulnerabilities with a high Common Vulnerability Severity Score (CVSS). Yet, little to no attention is given to the length of time by which vulnerabilities persist and survive on the network. In this paper, we review a novel approach to quantifying the length of time a vulnerability persists on the network, its time-to-death, and predictors of lower vulnerability survival rates. Our contribution is unique in that we apply the cox proportional hazards regression model to real data from an operational IT environment. This paper provides a mathematical overview of the theory behind survival analysis methods, a description of our vulnerability data, and an interpretation of the results.

The paper discusses recent results of flight tests performed with the Hensoldt (former Airbus DS Electronics and Border Security) LiDAR system in brownout. The SferiSense® LiDAR system was mounted on a Mi-2 test platform as part of the complete DVE system SFERION® to undergo the tests. To optimize brownout capabilities minor modifications were performed on the sensor firmware over the SferiSense® serial LiDAR system which is in operational use on the NH90 transport helicopter. Also dust echoes were filtered out by a real-time filtering algorithm. Numerous approaches into own ship generated dust (light to heavy) as well as fan generated dust clouds (chalk 2 scenarios) were performed. The paper discusses the results and shows under which conditions the LiDAR can still look through the dust cloud. Also the contribution of high resolution real-time 3D LiDAR data to the DVE system usage is discussed.

The optimum small satellite (SmallSat) cryocooler system must be extremely compact and lightweight, achieved in this paper by operating a linear cryocooler at a frequency of approximately 300 Hz. Operation at this frequency, which is well in excess of the 100-150 Hz reported in recent papers on related efforts, requires an evolution beyond the traditional Oxford-class, flexure-based methods of setting the mechanical resonance. A novel approach that optimizes the electromagnetic design and the mechanical design together to simultaneously achieve the required dynamic and thermodynamic performances is described. Since highly miniaturized pulse tube coolers are fundamentally ill-suited for the sub-80K temperature range of interest because the boundary layer losses inside the pulse tube become dominant at the associated very small pulse tube size, a moving displacer Stirling cryocooler architecture is used. Compact compressor mechanisms developed on a previous program are reused for this design, and they have been adapted to yield an extremely compact Stirling warm end motor mechanism. Supporting thermodynamic and electromagnetic analysis results are reported.

This paper describes cooperative and non-cooperative static Bayesian game models with complete and incomplete information for the development of optimum acquisition strategies associated with the Program and Technical Baseline (PTB) solutions obtained from Part 1 of this paper [1]. The optimum acquisition strategies discussed focus on achieving “Affordability” by incorporating contractors’ bidding strategies into the government acquisition strategies for acquiring future space systems. The paper discusses System Engineering (SE) frameworks, analytical and simulation approaches and modeling for developing the optimum acquisition strategies from both the government and contractor perspectives for Firm Fixed Price (FFP) and Fixed Price Incentive Firm (FPIF) contract types.

Many existing and emerging remote sensing applications in the UV, Visible, NIR, SWIR, MWIR and LWIR regions are challenging the conventional thinking of radiance and temperature calibration techniques. While the relationship between blackbody temperature and optical radiation is well understood, often there is an “invisible” dividing line between treatments of these values as either optical radiance or temperature. It is difficult to perform seamless temperature and radiance calibrations across the point of 2.5um. Spectrum above 2.5um is typically related in temperature terms and below 2.5um may be either spoken of in terms of temperature or optical radiance. There is also a natural unit “convergence” issue at 2.5um, due to the crossover of significant levels of emissivity, reflectance and temperature at this point. NMI traceability in the spectral region of 2.5-14.0um can also be a problem especially for spectral radiance. This paper will outline a possible turn-key test bench solution that provides traceable solutions for both temperature and radiance value in these regimes. The intent of this paper is to offer a possible solution and challenge the infrastructure that exists today over the 0.3-14um range in order to obtain a valid spectral radiance or temperature value, or both, to support emerging sensor fusion technology.

As pixel sizes reduce in the development of modern High Definition (HD) Mid Wave Infrared (MWIR) detectors the interpixel cross-talk becomes increasingly difficult to regulate. The diffusion lengths required to achieve the quantum efficiency and sensitivity of MWIR detectors are typically longer than the pixel pitch dimension, and the probability of inter-pixel cross-talk increases as the pixel pitch/diffusion length fraction decreases. Inter-pixel cross-talk is most conveniently quantified by the focal plane array sampling Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). Cross-talk MTF will reduce the ideal sinc square pixel MTF that is commonly used when modelling sensor performance. However, cross-talk MTF data is not always readily available from detector suppliers, and since the origins of inter-pixel cross-talk are uniquely device and manufacturing process specific, no generic MTF models appear to satisfy the needs of the sensor designers and analysts. In this paper cross-talk MTF data has been collected from recent publications and the development for a generic cross-talk MTF model to fit this data is investigated. The resulting cross-talk MTF model is then included in a MWIR sensor model and the impact on sensor performance is evaluated in terms of the National Imagery Interoperability Rating Scale’s (NIIRS) General Image Quality Equation (GIQE) metric for a range of fnumber/ detector pitch Fλ/d configurations and operating environments. By applying non-linear boost transfer functions in the signal processing chain, the contrast losses due to cross-talk may be compensated for. Boost transfer functions, however, also reduce the signal to noise ratio of the sensor. In this paper boost function limits are investigated and included in the sensor performance assessments.

Partially observable group activities (POGA) occurring in confined spaces are epitomized by their limited observability of the objects and actions involved. In many POGA scenarios, different objects are being used by human operators for the conduct of various operations. In this paper, we describe the ontology of such as POGA in the context of In-Vehicle Group Activity (IVGA) recognition. Initially, we describe the virtue of ontology modeling in the context of IVGA and show how such an ontology and a priori knowledge about the classes of in-vehicle activities can be fused for inference of human actions that consequentially leads to understanding of human activity inside the confined space of a vehicle. In this paper, we treat the problem of “action-object” as a duality problem. We postulate a correlation between observed human actions and the object that is being utilized within those actions, and conversely, if an object being handled is recognized, we may be able to expect a number of actions that are likely to be performed on that object. In this study, we use partially observable human postural sequences to recognition actions. Inspired by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) learning capability, we present an architecture design using a new CNN model to learn “action-object” perception from surveillance videos. In this study, we apply a sequential Deep Hidden Markov Model (DHMM) as a post-processor to CNN to decode realized observations into recognized actions and activities. To generate the needed imagery data set for the training and testing of these new methods, we use the IRIS virtual simulation software to generate high-fidelity and dynamic animated scenarios that depict in-vehicle group activities under different operational contexts. The results of our comparative investigation are discussed and presented in detail.

A detection system outputs two distinct labels, thus, there are two errors it can make. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) function quantifies both of these errors as parameters vary within the system. Combining two detection systems typically yields better performance when a combining rule is chosen appropriately. When detection systems are combined the assumption of independence is usually made in order to simplify the math- ematics, so that we need only combine the individual ROC curve from each system into one ROC curve. This paper investigates label fusion of two detection systems drawn from a single Detection System Family (DSF). Given that one knows the ROC function for the DSF, we seek a formula with the resultant ROC function of the fused detection systems as a function (specifically, a transformation) of the ROC function. In this paper, we derive this transformation for the disjunction and conjunction label rules. Examples are given that demonstrates this transformation. Furthermore, another transformation is given to account for the dependencies between the two systems within the family. Examples will be given that demonstrates these ideas and the corresponding transformation acting on the ROC curve.

The Terahertz Time Domain Reflection Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) method of paint layer diagnostics is a non-contact electromagnetic technique analogous to pulsed-ultrasound with the added capability of spectroscopic characterization. The THz-TDS sensor emits a near-single cycle electromagnetic pulse with a bandwidth from 0.1 to 3 THz. This wide bandwidth pulse is focused on the coating, and echo pulses are generated from each interface (air-coating, layer-layer, coating-substrate). In this paper, the THz-TDS method is applied to specialty aircraft coatings. The THz-TDS method is able to penetrate the whole coating stack and sample the properties of each layer. Because the reflected pulses from individual layers typically overlap in time, the complex permittivity function and thickness of each layer is determined by a best fit of the measured reflection (either in time or frequency domain) to a layered model of the paint. The THz- TDS method is applied to specialty coatings prior to and during accelerated aging on a series of test coupons. The coupons are also examined during aging using ATR (attenuated total reflectance)-FTIR spectroscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to ascertain, quantify, and understand the breakdown mechanisms of the coatings. In addition, the same samples are characterized using THz-TDS techniques to determine if the THz-TDS method can be utilized as a non-destructive evaluation technique to sense degradation of the coatings. Our results suggest that the degradation mechanism begins in the top coat layer. In this layer, 254 nm UV illumination in combination with the presence of moisture works partially with oxides as catalysts to decompose the polymer matrix thereby creating porosity in the top coat layer. Since the catalytic effect is partial, loss of the oxides by chemical reaction can also occur. As the topcoat layer becomes more porous, it allows water vapor to permeate the topcoat layer and interact with the rain erosion layer via carbonization of the polymer matrix in the rain erosion layer. The presence of the salt accelerates the pitting degradation. The goal of this paper is to determine if THz-TDS can be used to sense degradation of the coating.
