Abstract Genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT, Oreochromis niloticus) are commercially important fish that are cultured in China. GIFT are highly susceptible to diseases when exposed to high temperatures in summer. Better understanding the GIFT regulatory response to heat stress will not only help in determining the relationship between heat stress signalling pathways and adaption mechanisms, but will also contribute to breeding new high-temperature tolerant strains of GIFT. In this study, we built control (28 °C) and heat-treated (37.5 °C) groups, and extracted RNA from the liver tissues for high-throughput next-generation sequencing to study the miRNA and mRNA expression profiles. We identified 28 differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs and 744 DE mRNAs between the control and heat-treated groups and annotated them using the KEGG database. A total of 38 target genes were predicted for 21 of the DE miRNAs, including 64 negative miRNA–mRNA interactions. We verified 15 DE miRNA–mRNA pairs and 16 other DE mRNAs by quantitative real-time PCR. Important regulatory pathways involved in the early response of GIFT to heat stress included organism system, metabolism, and diseases. Our findings will facilitate the understanding of regulatory pathways affected by acute heat stress, which will help to better prevent heat damage to GIFT.

This study presents an approach that integrates compressed sensing technology with two-dimensional hyperchaotic coupled Fourier oscillator systems (2D-HCFOS) to address the challenge of slow encryption speeds in agricultural unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The primary challenge in enhancing encryption speed lies in the limited capacity inherent in traditional chaotic-based systems and the computational complexity of their processes. The 2D-HCFOS utilizes a complex two-dimensional hybrid chaotic system, which significantly enhances the security of agricultural UAV image data. Notably, the image encryption process is performed on a personal computer connected to the drone, ensuring efficient processing. By integrating advanced Fourier series and nonlinear coupled oscillators, the model surpasses existing chaotic-based methods, improving both the pseudo-randomness and robustness of encryption. Additionally, incorporating Bonouille functions into the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain results in a sparser measurement matrix, which is essential for efficient encryption on personal computers. The effectiveness of 2D-HCFOS in securely encrypting agricultural drone images has been rigorously validated through simulations and analytical evaluations using sophisticated row, rotation, and matrix encryption techniques. The improved security performance is further verified by comparative analysis. Compared with other models, the Lyapunov index of 2D-HCFOS is 15.1039, and the sample entropy is 2.4987, indicating that it possesses superior chaotic performance and encryption reliability., (© 2024. Solar energy plays an important role in renewable energy generation, with the advantages of low pollution, easy installation, and relatively easy access. However, photovoltaic (PV) modules are susceptible to cause localized shading from external factors such as leaves in the canopy, surrounding buildings, etc., which would affect power generation efficiency and even pose safety risks. Existing methods cannot perform well in real-time conditions. This paper proposes a real-time shading monitoring method for the PV module based on computer vision. The gamma transform and histogram matching were adopted to enhance key features and adjust the global gamut strength distribution in the image of the PV module; then the gray-level slicing method finished the segmentation to detect the shadow from the video. All processing can be realized in the real-time monitor camera and the detection results can be displayed on the HMI in PC with high efficiency and low cost. According to tests in the practical complex environment, the method can have enough detection performance and high real-time performance with an accuracy of 0.98, and the F0.5 and F2 values are 0.87 and 0.85, respectively. The metrics of the proposed method are higher than those of the existing Canny detection method, the Random Forest detection method, and the CNN detection method. In addition, the average time required by the proposed method to process a frame is 0.721 s. Neoadjuvant radiotherapy is the standard care of locally advanced rectal cancer. Although a majority of patients received the same dose, the curative efficacy varies among individuals. In recent years, cancer treatment has entered the era of precise medical care, and how to identify patients for proper treatment by molecular signature is an important path of individualized therapy. This study aimed to establish and validate a genome-based model for adjusting radiation dose (GARD) for Chinese locally advanced rectal cancer through gene expression microarrays, and to evaluate the response of the GARD model in predicting the efficacy of neoadjuvant radiotherapy. Fresh-frozen primary tumor from 64 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer undergoing neoadjuvant radiotherapy from 2015 to 2018 were included. The gene expression profile was analyzed using Affymetrix 3000Dx gene-chip scanner. The radiosensitivity index (RSI) and GARD were calculated using the pGRT™ algorithm. Neoadjuvant rectal cancer score (NAR) was selected as efficacy evaluation indicators. Patients were divided into high and low NAR scoring groups, and two-sample t-test was used to analyze the differences in GARD values between different NAR subgroups. ROC curves were used to calculate the cut-off values and the area under the curve (AUC) for assessing the validity of the GARD models. The personalized radiation dose ( pGRT dose )can be computed using the formula nd = GARD / (α + βd). Among patients, 1.5% T2, 46.3% T3, and 52.2% T4. Wherein pCR (n = 10; 15.6%) and no pCR (n = 54; 84.4%). The median NAR is 8.43 (rang from 0 to 50.34, IQR 3.75-14.98). NAR > 8.43 (n = 27; 42.2%) and NAR ≤ 8.43 (n = 37; 57.8%), suggesting that there are significant individual differences in clinical efficacy of patients with similar tumor stages and under the same treatment conditions. The median RSI is 0.48 (rang from 0.22 to 0.92, IQR 0.41-0.55). Median GARD was 18.40 rang from (rang from 2.26 to 37.52, IQR 14.94-22.28) within tumor tissue, suggesting individual differences in the efficacy of radiation therapy. The RSI value was significantly lower in the NAR low group (NAR ≤ 8.43) than in NAR high group (NAR > 8.43) (0.44 vs. 0.54, p = 0.0003). The GARD value was significantly higher in the NAR low group (NAR ≤ 8.43) than in NAR high group (NAR > 8.43) (21.01 vs. 15.88, p = 0.0004). Using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a GARD threshold of 17 was identified as optimal, covering 37.5% of the 64-patient sample, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.75. In the external validation cohort, the high GARD score group demonstrated superior DFS compared to the low GARD score group(p < 0.001). Only 17% of patients had pGRT dose within the guideline recommended dose (45-50 Gy). The differences in NAR values among LARC patients receiving standard neoadjuvant radiotherapy suggest significant individual differences in clinical outcomes among patients with similar tumor stage and the same treatment conditions. Patients with a GARD value exceeding 17 exhibit a more favorable prognosis. Our results suggest that the gene expression-based pGRT™ algorithm has good efficacy prediction performance in preoperative concurrent radiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer, suggesting the potential clinical application of this method to guide the designation of individualized radiotherapy doses., (© 2024. Bronchiolitis is a significant factor contributing to bronchial asthma in infants and young children. After treatment, recurrent wheezing symptoms often occur, especially in children with atopic constitution, who tend to have more severe conditions and poorer prognosis. Therefore, exploring the prognostic value of total serum immunoglobulin E (tIgE) and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels in children with atopic constitution who suffer from bronchiolitis is of great significance. A total of 260 children with bronchiolitis admitted to our hospital from October 2020 to June 2022 were regarded as the research subjects with prospective study, according to whether the children had atopic constitution, they were grouped into non atopic constitution group (n = 156) and atopic constitution group (n = 104); after 6 months of treatment, children with atopic constitution were grouped into a good prognosis group (n = 58) and a poor prognosis group (n = 46) based on their prognosis; in addition, 260 healthy children who underwent physical examination and had clinical data consistent with those of children with bronchiolitis were regarded as the reference group. The serum tIgE and FeNO levels of each group were compared; multivariate Logistic regression was applied to analyze the prognostic factors of children with atopic constitution bronchiolitis; ROC curve was applied to analyze the predictive value of tIgE and FeNO levels after treatment for the prognosis of children with atopic constitution bronchiolitis. The tIgE levels in the control group, non-atopic group, and atopic group [(123.54 ± 29.62) IU/mL, (245.71 ± 30.59) IU/mL, (316.46 ± 31.78) IU/mL, respectively] increased sequentially, with statistically significant differences (F = 1766.954, P = 0.000). The FeNO levels in the control group, non-atopic group, and atopic group [(8.36 ± 3.57) ppb, (15.28 ± 3.69) ppb, (19.84 ± 3.58) ppb, respectively] also increased sequentially, with statistically significant differences (F = 765.622, P = 0.000). The tIgE, FeNO, proportion of patients with asthma family history, and proportion of patients with allergic family history in the poor prognosis group were obviously higher than those in the good prognosis group (P < 0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that family history of asthma, family history of allergies, tIgE, and FeNO were influencing factors for the prognosis of children with atopic bronchiolitis (P < 0.05). The AUC of the combination of tIgE and FeNO in predicting the prognosis of children with atopic constitutional bronchiolitis was 0.910, with a sensitivity of 78.26% and a specificity of 93.10%, which was superior to the independent prediction of tIgE and FeNO (Z combined detection-tIgE  = 2.442, Z combined detection-FeNO  = 3.080, P = 0.015, 0.002). The levels of tIgE and FeNO in children with atopic constitution bronchiolitis are obviously increased, and the combination of the two has high predictive value for the prognosis of atopic constitution bronchiolitis., (© 2024. To investigate the mechanism of curcumin (CUR) on vascular calcification (VC), we screen for common targets of CUR and atherosclerosis and verify the targets genes in vivo and in vitro experiments. The common targets of CUR and AS were screened and obtained using different databases. These target genes were analyzed by GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis. PPI network analysis was performed and to analyze the key targets. A rat VC model was constructed and CUR was fed for three weeks. The changes of vascular structure and calcium salt deposition were observed in H&E and Von Kossa staining. Further, the expression of these target proteins was detected in the primary VSMCs of VC. The 31 common targets were obtained. GO functional enrichment analysis obtained 1284 terms and KEGG pathway enriched 66 pathways. The key genes were identified in the cytoHubba plugin. The molecular docking analysis showed that CUR bound strongly to EGFR, STAT3 and BCL2. The animal experiments showed the deposition calcium salt reduced by the CUR administration. These proteins BMP2, RUNX2, EGFR, STAT3 and BAX expression were upregulated in VC group and CUR attenuated the upregulated expression. The signal protein Akt and p65 expression increased in VC group and decreased in CUR group. We identified some common target genes of CUR and AS and identified these key genes. To investigate the role of miR-223-3p in the modulatory effect of paeonol (Pae) on high glucose (HG)-induced endothelial cell apoptosis. HG (25 mmol/L) was used to induce cellular damage and apoptosis in the mouse cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (MCMECs). Various concentration of Pae was tested and 60 μmol/L Pae was selected for the subsequent studies. MCMECs were transfected with exogenous miR-223-3p mimics or anti-miR-223-3p inhibitors. Cell viability was assessed by MTT assay and apoptosis was quantified by flow cytometry. The expression of miR-223-3p and NLRP3 mRNA was measured using real-time quantitative RT-PCR, and protein level of NLRP3 and apoptosis-related proteins was detected by immunoblotting. Pae significantly attenuated HG-induced apoptosis of MCMECs in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, Pae (60 µmol/L) significantly reversed HG-induced down-regulation of miR-223-3p and up-regulation of NLRP3. Pae (60 µmol/L) also significantly blocked HG-induced up-regulation of Bax and Caspase-3 as well as down-regulation of Bcl-2. Moreover, exogenous miR-223-3p mimics not only significantly attenuated HG-induced apoptosis, but also significantly suppressed NRLP-3 and pro-apoptotic proteins in the MCMECs. In contrast, transfection of exogenous miR-223-3p inhibitors into the MCMECs resulted in not only significantly increased apoptosis of the cells, but also significant suppression of NLRP3 and pro-apoptotic proteins in the cells. Pae attenuated HG-induced apoptosis of MCMECs in a concentration-dependent manner. This study presented a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics-based model for fused filament fabrication (FFF) three-dimensional (3D) printing multiphase and multiphysics coupling. A model based on the framework of computational fluid dynamics was built, utilizing the front-tracking method for high precision of multiphase material interfaces, a fully resolved simulation at the mesoscale explores the underlying physical mechanism of the self-supported horizontal printing. The study investigated the influence of printing temperature and velocity on the FFF process, exhibiting a certain self-supporting forming ability over a specific range. The results indicated that during the printing of large-span horizontal extension structures, the bridge deck material transitions from initial straight extension to sagging deformation, ultimately adopting a curved shape. The straight extension distance is inversely proportional to the depth of the sagging deformation. Additionally, the study revealed that printing temperature primarily affected the curing time of the molten material, while printing velocity fundamentally affected the relaxation time of both thermal and dynamic characteristics of the material., (© 2024. Breast cancer, as the most common cancer, has surpassed lung cancer worldwide. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been linked to the onset of cancer and its prognosis in recent studies. However, quite a few studies have shown that there is a link between NLR and lymph node metastases in cN0 hormone receptor-positive (HR(+)) breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between NLR and lymph node metastases in cN0 HR(+) breast cancer patients. From January 2012 to January 2022, 220 patients with cN0 HR(+) invasive breast cancers were enrolled in this study. The relationship between NLR and pathological data was statistically examined. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the optimal cutoff of NLR, a chi-squared test was used for the univariate analysis, and logistic analysis was used for the multivariate analysis. The NLR had an optimal cutoff of 2.4 when the Jorden index was at a maximum. Patients with axillary lymph node metastases had a higher NLR (P < 0.05). A Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in cN0 HR(+) breast cancer with axillary lymph node metastasis among different clinical stages, histological grades, Ki-67 levels, tumor sizes, and NLR levels (P < 0.05). Clinical stage, tumor size, and NLR were found to be independent risk factors for lymph node metastases in multifactorial analysis. In cN0 HR(+) breast cancer, NLR is an independent risk factor for lymph node metastases. An NLR ≥ 2.4 indicates an increased probability of lymph node metastases. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the changes in choroidal vascularity index (CVI) before and after surgery for idiopathic macular hole (MH). Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) images were analyzed at baseline and at 1-week, 1-month, and 3-month postoperative visits. A total of 97 patients (97 eyes) were included in the study. At baseline, overall CVI and macular CVI showed negative correlation with axial length (AL) and positive correlation with central corneal thickness (CCT). There were no significant differences in macular CVI or overall CVI between affected and healthy eyes, as well as in subgroup analysis of different stages of macular CVI. Following surgery, there was a significant decrease in CVI at 1 week postoperatively, followed by a gradual recovery to baseline levels over time. The observed changes in CVI may be attributed to factors such as air tamponade, pressure changes, and photoreceptor metabolism. This study provides insights into the pattern of CVI changes associated with MH surgery. The findings suggest that stage 4 MH is associated with decreased macular CVI in affected eyes. Pathogens typically responsible for hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) constitute a major threat to healthcare systems worldwide. They spread via hospital (or hospital-community) networks by readmissions or patient transfers. Therefore, knowledge of these networks is essential to develop and test strategies to mitigate and control the HAI spread. Until now, no methods for comparing healthcare networks across different systems were proposed. Based on healthcare insurance data from four German federal states (Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Saxony and Thuringia), we constructed hospital networks and compared them in a systematic approach regarding population, hospital characteristics, and patient transfer patterns. Direct patient transfers between hospitals had only a limited impact on HAI spread. Whereas, with low colonization clearance rates, readmissions to the same hospitals posed the biggest transmission risk of all inter-hospital transfers. We then generated hospital-community networks, in which patients either stay in communities or in hospitals. We found that network characteristics affect the final prevalence and the time to reach it. However, depending on the characteristics of the pathogen (colonization clearance rate and transmission rate or even the relationship between transmission rate in hospitals and in the community), the studied networks performed differently. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which affects multiple organs, is causing an unprecedented global public health crisis. Most COVID-19 patients recover gradually upon appropriate interventions. Viruses were reported to utilize the small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), containing a cell-specific cargo of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, to escape the attack from the host's immune system. This study aimed to examine the sEVs lipid profile of plasma of recovered COVID-19 patients (RCs). Plasma sEVs were separated from 83 RCs 3 months after discharge without underlying diseases, including 18 recovered asymptomatic patients (RAs), 32 recovered moderate patients (RMs), and 33 recovered severe and critical patients (RSs), and 19 healthy controls (HCs) by Total Exosome Isolation Kit. Lipids were extracted from sEVs and then subjected to targeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The size, concentration, and distribution of sEVs did not differ in RCs and HCs as validated by transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and immunoblot analysis. Fifteen subclasses of 508 lipids were detected in plasma sEVs from HCs, RAs, RMs, and RSs, such as phosphatidylcholines (PCs) and diacylglycerols (DAGs), etc. Total lipid intensity displayed downregulation in RCs compared with HCs. The relative abundance of DAGs gradually dropped, whereas PCs, lysophosphatidylcholines, and sphingomyelins were higher in RCs relative to HCs, especially in RSs. 88 lipids out of 241 in sEVs of RCs were significantly different and a conspicuous increase was revealed with disease status. The sEVs lipids alternations were found to be significantly correlated with the clinical indices in RCs and HCs, suggesting that the impact of COVID-19 on lipid metabolism lingered for a long time. The lipid abnormalities bore an intimate link with glycerophospholipid metabolism and glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor biosynthesis. Furthermore, the lipidomic analysis showed that RCs were at higher risk of developing diabetes and sustaining hepatic impairment. The abnormality of immunomodulation in RCs might still exist. 3-Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase 2 (HMGCS2) is the rate-limiting enzyme for ketone body synthesis, and most current studies focus on mitochondrial maturation and metabolic reprogramming. The role of HMGCS2 was evaluated in a pan-cancer multi-database using R language, and HMGCS2 was lowly expressed or not differentially expressed in all tumor tissues compared with normal tissues. Correlation analysis of clinical case characteristics, genomic heterogeneity, tumor stemness, and overall survival revealed that HMGCS2 is closely related to clear cell renal cell carcinoma (KIRC). Single-cell sequencing data from normal human kidneys revealed that HMGCS2 is specifically expressed in proximal tubular cells of normal adults. In addition, HMGCS2 is associated with tumor immune infiltration and microenvironment, and KIRC patients with low expression of HMGCS2 have worse prognosis. Finally, the results of cell counting kit 8 assays, colony formation assays, flow cytometry, and Western blot analysis suggested that upregulation of HMGCS2 increased the expression of key tumor suppressor proteins, inhibited the proliferation of clear cell renal cell carcinoma cells and promoted cell apoptosis. In conclusion, HMGCS2 is abnormally expressed in pan-cancer, may play an important role in anti-tumor immunity, and is expected to be a potential tumor prognostic marker, especially in clear cell renal cell carcinoma., (© 2023. Lung cancer ranks as one of the top malignancies and the leading cause of cancer death in both males and females in the US. Using a cancer database covering the entire population, this study was to determine the gender disparities in lung cancer incidence during 2001-2019. Cancer patients were obtained from the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. The SEER*Stat software was applied to calculate the age-adjusted incidence rates (AAIR). Temporal changes in lung cancer incidence were analyzed by the Joinpoint software. A total of 4,086,432 patients (53.3% of males) were diagnosed with lung cancer. Among them, 52.1% were 70 years or older, 82.7% non-Hispanic white, 39.7% from the South, and 72.6% non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The AAIR of lung cancer continuously reduced from 91.0 per 100000 to 59.2 in males during the study period, while it increased from 55.0 in 2001 to 56.8 in 2006 in females, then decreased to 48.1 in 2019. The female to male incidence rate ratio of lung cancer continuously increased from 2001 to 2019. Gender disparities were observed among age groups, races, and histological types. In those aged 0-54 years, females had higher overall incidence rates of lung cancer than males in recent years, which was observed in all races (except non-Hispanic black), all regions, and adenocarcinoma and small cell (but not squamous cell). Non-Hispanic black females aged 0-54 years had a faster decline rate than males since 2013. API females demonstrated an increased trend during the study period. Lung cancer incidence continues to decrease with gender disparities among age groups, races, regions, and histological types. Although bisphenol S (BPS), as a bisphenol A (BPA) substitute, has been widely used in the commodity, it is embryotoxic in recent experiments. Nowadays, it remains unclear how BPS affects preimplantation embryos. Here, my team investigated the effects of BPS on preimplantation embryos and the possible molecular mechanisms in mice. The results showed that 10 -6  mol/L BPS exposure delayed the blastocysts stage, and exposure to 10 -4  mol/L BPS induced 2-cell block in mice preimplantation embryos. A significant increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and antioxidant enzyme genes Sod1, Gpx1, Gpx6, and Prdx2 expression were shown, but the level of apoptosis was normal in 2-cell blocked embryos. Further experiments demonstrated that embryonic genome activation (EGA) specific genes Hsp70.1 and Hsc70 were significantly decreased, which implied that ROS and EGA activation have the potential to block 2-cell development. Antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and folic acid (FA) were used to further explore the roles of ROS and EGA in 2-cell block. Only 1200 U/mL SOD was found to alleviate the phenomenon of 2-cell block, reduce oxidative damage, and restore the expression of EGA-specific genes Hsp70.1 and Hsc70. Conclusively, this study demonstrates for the first time that BPS can induce 2-cell block, which is mainly mediated by ROS aggregation and results in the failure of EGA activation., (© 2023. In this study, we simulated the spatial and temporal processes of a particulate matter (PM) pollution episode from December 10-29, 2019, in Zhengzhou, the provincial capital of Henan, China, which has a large population and severe PM pollution. As winter is the high incidence period of particulate pollution, winter statistical data were selected from the pollutant observation stations in the study area. During this period, the highest concentrations of PM 2.5 (atmospheric PM with a diameter of less than 2.5 µm) and PM 10 (atmospheric PM with a diameter of less than 10 µm) peaked at 283 μg m -3 and 316 μg m -3 , respectively. The contribution rates of local and surrounding regional emissions within Henan (emissions from the regions to the south, northwest, and northeast of Zhengzhou) to PM concentrations in Zhengzhou were quantitatively analyzed based on the regional Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF/Chem). Model evaluation showed that the WRF/Chem can accurately simulate the spatial and temporal variations in the PM concentrations in Zhengzhou. We found that the anthropogenic emissions south of Zhengzhou were the main causes of high PM concentrations during the studied episode, with contribution rates of 14.39% and 16.34% to PM 2.5 and PM 10 , respectively. The contributions of anthropogenic emissions from Zhengzhou to the PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations in Zhengzhou were 7.94% and 7.29%, respectively. The contributions of anthropogenic emissions from the area northeast of Zhengzhou to the PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations in Zhengzhou were 7.42% and 7.18%, respectively. These two areas had similar contributions to PM pollution in Zhengzhou. This paper introduces a new type of steel-concrete composite pylon that has been applied to Nanjing Fifth Yangtze River Bridge (a three-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 600 m). For this new type of pylon, the steel shells are connected with concrete through PBL shear connectors and studs, and the inner steel shells are connected with the outer steel shells by angle steels. Numerical analysis and full-scale model tests show that the pylon structure exhibits excellent mechanical properties and construction performance. The application of BIM technology, the research and development of special spreaders and construction platforms ensure the precise installation of structures. Highly factory-manufactured modular assembly of the reinforced steel shell structure can effectively reduce the intensity and difficulty of on-site operations, and improve the quality of the project, with low construction risks. New and old subgrade stability is a crucial problem for widening projects in soft soil foundations because uncoordinated deformations can cause serious engineering accidents, even disasters. In order to ensure the stability of a widening expressway project near a pond in the Qinbei section, a series of on-site investigations, lab tests, and numerical analyses was performed. The settlement and displacement of on-site monitoring were carried out during the construction period to verify the analyzed results. It was found that the uneven settlement caused heavy settlement and displacement of the embankment; thus, net cracks and longitudinal cracks occurred in the expressway. The new embankment was also affected by the weak foundation; therefore, the foundation should be reinforced before the construction of the widening part. Considering the economy and effectiveness of the widening project, the replacement method was recommended for the weak foundation reinforcement based on the numerical analysis and on-site motoring results. Water pumping had a significant effect on the settlement of the embankment. Water pumping caused seepage in the foundation and increased the effective stress of the soil, making the foundation more consolidated. The pond slope should be reinforced before the construction of the embankment because it was not confined by the surrounding soil. Therefore, the slope soil could not provide sufficient passive soil pressure and easily slide., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a worldwide public health problem and accurate assessment of renal function in CKD patients is important for the treatment. Although the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) can accurately evaluate the renal function, the procedure of measurement is complicated. Therefore, endogenous markers are often chosen to estimate GFR indirectly. However, the accuracy of the equations for estimating GFR is not optimistic. To estimate GFR more precisely, we constructed a classification decision tree model to select the most befitting GFR estimation equation for CKD patients. By searching the HIS system of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medicine University for all CKD patients who visited the hospital from December 1, 2018 to December 1, 2021 and underwent Gate's method of 99m Tc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging to detect GFR, we eventually collected 518 eligible subjects, who were randomly divided into a training set (70%, 362) and a test set (30%, 156). Then, we used the training set data to build a classification decision tree model that would choose the most accurate equation from the four equations of BIS-2, CKD-EPI(CysC), CKD-EPI(Cr-CysC) and Ruijin, and the equation was selected by the model to estimate GFR. Next, we utilized the test set data to verify our tree model, and compared the GFR estimated by the tree model with other 13 equations. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Bland-Altman plot were used to evaluate the accuracy of the estimates by different methods. A classification decision tree model, including BSA, BMI, 24-hour Urine protein quantity, diabetic nephropathy, age and RASi, was eventually retrieved. In the test set, the RMSE and MAE of GFR estimated by the classification decision tree model were 12.2 and 8.5 respectively, which were lower than other GFR estimation equations. According to Bland-Altman plot of patients in the test set, the eGFR was calculated based on this model and had the smallest degree of variation. We applied the classification decision tree model to select an appropriate GFR estimation equation for CKD patients, and the final GFR estimation was based on the model selection results, which provided us with greater accuracy in GFR estimation., (© 2022. Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) has a high morbidity and mortality. Current studies have confirmed a variety of microRNA polymorphisms were associated with tumor susceptibility, however, the mechanisms are still unknown. In this study, we were aimed to clarify how polymorphism rs2682818 participated in the progression of CRC. First of all, the differential expression of miR-618 was assessed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in CRC patients with different genotypes of polymorphism rs2682818, including homozygous (TT) genotype, homozygous (GG) genotype and heterozygous (TG) genotype. Secondly, plasmids carried miR-168 precursor sequences harboring rs2682818 (SNP type) or without rs2682818 (wild type) were transfected into 293T cells to verify that polymorphism rs2682818 affected miR-618 expression. Thirdly, CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry assay, transwell assay and mouse xenograft assay were performed to measure the biological functions of miR-618 in CRC. Fourthly, the candidate target genes of miR-618 which were predicted by bioinformatics tools were verified by luciferase reporter assay. Finally, in order to explain the potential molecular mechanisms, western blotting was performed to demonstrate the differential expression and phosphorylation of pathway related proteins. The results showed that miR-618 was down-regulated in colon cancer, especially in CRC patients with rs2682818 GG homozygous genotype. Higher expression of mature miR-618 occurred in patients with TT homozygous genotype, and these patients usually had a longer survival time. Moreover, miR-618 mimic obviously impaired the growth and invasion ability of CRC cells, and miR-618 mimic also remarkably promoted CRC cell apoptosis. Our luciferase experiments confirmed that TIMP1 was a target of miR-618 in CRC cells. Knockdown of TIMP1 also significantly inhibited the malignant cytological features of CRC, including malignant growth and invasion as well as apoptosis resistance. In summary, polymorphism rs2682818 participated in the progression of CRC via affecting the expression of mature miR-618 in CRC cells, and miR-618 inhibited the progression of CRC via targeting TIMP1expression., (© 2021. The evolution of costly punishment is a puzzle due to cooperators' second-order free-riding. Previous studies have proposed many solutions mainly focused on reducing the punishment cost or punishing second-order free riders directly or indirectly. We attempt to explain this confusion from the perspective of punishment motivation, which is why the punisher is willing to pay the cost. The answer is that the punisher is egoistic. Egoistic punishment aims to protect punishers' own cooperative benefits shared by the defectors. In such case, egoistic punishers would pay a cost in punishing defectors and retrieve lost payoffs from defectors. Here, we examined the evolution and performance of egoistic punishment and compared it with typical altruistic punishment using classic peer-punishment and pool-punishment modes. Results showed egoistic punishment can evolve and effectively promote cooperation within a large parameter range, whether in a well-mixed or structured population, or through peer-punishment or pool-punishment modes. This result is also robust to different strategy-updating rules. The evolution under the pool-punishment mechanism is more complicated. The influence of parameters is counter-intuitive because of cycle dominance; namely, the cost is the key factor to control the level of cooperation and the fine determines the ratio of the punishers and cooperators. Compared with altruistic punishment, egoistic punishment can promote cooperation in a lower-fine and higher-cost area, especially in the pool punishment mode, and the egoistic punishers have stronger survivability. Egoistic punishers represent the natural fairness in a social system. Results revealed that focusing on individual equity can significantly promote collective cooperation. This study provides another explanation for the evolution of costly punishment.

To explore the predictive performance of machine learning on the recurrence of patients with gastric cancer after the operation. The available data is divided into two parts. In particular, the first part is used as a training set (such as 80% of the original data), and the second part is used as a test set (the remaining 20% of the data). And we use fivefold cross-validation. The weight of recurrence factors shows the top four factors are BMI, Operation time, WGT and age in order. In training group:among the 5 machine learning models, the accuracy of gbm was 0.891, followed by gbm algorithm was 0.876; The AUC values of the five machine learning algorithms are from high to low as forest (0.962), gbm (0.922), GradientBoosting (0.898), DecisionTree (0.790) and Logistic (0.748). And the precision of the forest is the highest 0.957, followed by the GradientBoosting algorithm (0.878). At the same time, in the test group is as follows: the highest accuracy of Logistic was 0.801, followed by forest algorithm and gbm; the AUC values of the five algorithms are forest (0.795), GradientBoosting (0.774), DecisionTree (0.773), Logistic (0.771) and gbm (0.771), from high to low. Among the five machine learning algorithms, the highest precision rate of Logistic is 1.000, followed by the gbm (0.487). Machine learning can predict the recurrence of gastric cancer patients after an operation. Besides, the first four factors affecting postoperative recurrence of gastric cancer were BMI, Operation time, WGT and age.

Ektacytometry has been the primary method for evaluating deformability of red blood cells (RBCs) in both research and clinical settings. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the flow of RBCs through a network of microfluidic capillaries could provide a more sensitive assessment of the progressive impairment of RBC deformability during hypothermic storage than ektacytometry. RBC units (n = 9) were split in half, with one half stored under standard (normoxic) conditions and the other half stored hypoxically, for up to 6 weeks. RBC deformability was measured weekly using two microfluidic devices, an artificial microvascular network (AMVN) and a multiplexed microcapillary network (MMCN), and two commercially available ektacytometers (RheoScan-D and LORRCA). By week 6, the elongation indexes measured with RheoScan-D and LORRCA decreased by 5.8-7.1% (5.4-6.9% for hypoxic storage). Over the same storage duration, the AMVN perfusion rate declined by 27.5% (24.5% for hypoxic) and the MMCN perfusion rate declined by 49.0% (42.4% for hypoxic). Unlike ektacytometry, both AMVN and MMCN measurements showed statistically significant differences between the two conditions after 1 week of storage. RBC morphology deteriorated continuously with the fraction of irreversibly-damaged (spherical) cells increasing significantly faster for normoxic than for hypoxic storage. Consequently, the number of MMCN capillary plugging events and the time MMCN capillaries spent plugged was consistently lower for hypoxic than for normoxic storage. These data suggest that capillary networks are significantly more sensitive to both the overall storage-induced decline of RBC deformability, and to the differences between the two storage conditions, than ektacytometry.

Fibulin-3 is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein widely expressed in various tissues. Tissue fibulin-3 expression have never been reported in association with prognosis of mesothelioma. Hence, we sought to determine the association between fibulin-3 expression and mesothelioma survival. We made a tissue microarray, which was comprised of cancer and normal tissue from mesothelioma patients (n = 82) during the period 1998-2017 in China. Fibulin-3 and HGMB1 expression were analyzed by immunohistochemistry method. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard models were used for analyzing survival data. Overall, 61 cases (74.4%) were female; 90.2% were of epithelioid type; the median overall survival time was 12.5 months. Fibulin-3 and HMGB1 were highly expressed in tumor tissue rather than adjacent tissue. The expression of fibulin-3 in tissue was correlated with that of HMGB1 (r = 0.32, P = 0.003). High expression of fibulin-3 in tumor tissue could predict poor survival in patients with mesothelioma (P = 0.02). This remained true in a multivariate model, with a significant hazard ratio of 1.91. We demonstrated that fibulin-3 in tumor tissue was a novel biomarker of poor survival of mesothelioma, suggesting it may be a relevant target for therapeutic intervention.

Brassica rapa and Raphanus sativus are two important edible vegetables that contain numerous nutritional ingredients. However, the agronomic traits and nutritional components of the intergeneric hybrid of B. rapa and R. sativus remain poorly understood. In this study, we used a stably inherited intergeneric hybrid of B. rapa and R. sativus as a model to study its metabolome and transcriptome profiles. Morphological and cytological analysis showed the intergeneric hybrid had the expected chromosome number and normal meiosis behavior. Moreover, the metabolome analysis showed multiple important secondary metabolites, including flavonoids and glucosinolates, were significantly upregulated in the hybrid. Furthermore, transcriptome data revealed that the expression level of the important genes involved in phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways was significantly upregulated in the hybrid. Ultimately, our data indicate the intergeneric hybrid will be a valuable bioengineering resource and promise to become a new-type hybrid vegetable with great medicinal value in future.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prognostic factors associated with visual outcomes in the salvageable eyes with posttraumatic endophthalmitis. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients diagnosed with posttraumatic endophthalmitis in our hospital between 2008 and 2015. The following information was collected: age, sex, etiology, past medical history, clinical manifestations, wound location, microbiology, blood leukocyte counts, types of interventions, initial visual acuities and final visual acuities. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the factors associated with final best-corrected visual acuity. In total, 98 eyes of 98 patients were included in our study. Fifty-seven eyes underwent vitrectomy, 27 of them had silicone oil tamponade, 38 eyes received intravitreal ceftazidime only and 3 eyes received intracameral ceftazidime. In univariate analysis, poor initial visual acuity, presence of intraocular foreign body, number of intravitreal injections, retinal detachment and Zone 3 injury were associated with poor visual outcome. In multivariable analysis, poor initial visual acuity, presence of intraocular foreign body and number of intravitreal injections were independently associated with poor visual outcome. The silicone oil group had fewer repeated intravitreal injections than the group without oil tamponade. We concluded that the visual outcome of salvageable eyes with posttraumatic endophthalmitis is associated with initial visual acuity, presence of intraocular foreign body and number of intravitreal antibiotic injections.

The hair follicle serves as a melanocyte reservoir for both hair and skin pigmentation. Melanocyte stem cells (MelSCs) and melanocyte progenitors reside in the bulge/sub-bulge region of the lower permanent portion of the hair follicle and play a vital role for repigmentation in vitiligo. It would be beneficial to isolate MelSCs in order to further study their function in pigmentary disorders; however, due to the lack of specific molecular surface markers, this has not yet been successfully accomplished in human hair follicles (HuHF). One potential method for MelSCs isolation is the "side population" technique, which is frequently used to isolate hematopoietic and tumor stem cells. In the present study, we decided to isolate HuHF MelSCs using "side population" to investigate their melanotic function. By analyzing mRNA expression of TYR, SOX10, and MITF, melanosome structure, and immunofluorescence with melanocyte-specific markers, we revealed that the SP-fraction contained MelSCs with an admixture of differentiated melanocytes. Furthermore, our in vivo studies indicated that differentiated SP-fraction cells, when fabricated into a cell-chitosan/gelatin composite, could transiently repopulate immunologically compromised mice skin to regain pigmentation. In summary, the SP technique is capable of isolating HuHF MelSCs that can potentially be used to repopulate skin for pigmentation.

This systematic review assesses the accuracy of molecular diagnostic methods for the detection of pulmonary tuberculosis in studies performed in China, published in Chinese and English. We searched for studies that assessed the accuracy of molecular diagnostics for pulmonary TB in China in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Wanfang Database, SinoMed, VIP Information, Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. For each index test, a summary estimation for sensitivity and specificity was calculated using the bivariate random-effects model. A total of 59 studies were included in our analysis. Loop-mediated isothermal amplifcation (LAMP) assay (six studies; pooled sensitivity 90%, 95% CI 78-95%; specificity 93%, 85-97%), line probe assay (LPA) (one study; 87%, 84-90%; 94%, 92-95%) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (FQ-PCR and RT-PCR) (four studies; 90%, 55-99%; 93%, 71-99%) showed good diagnostic performance in the meta-analysis. The highest pooled sensitivity was from Xpert MTB/RIF (20 studies; pooled sensitivity 91%, 95% CI 87-94%). The highest pooled specificity was from cross-priming amplification (CPA) (six studies; pooled specificity 97%, 95-99%). The lowest pooled sensitivity and specificity were from simultaneous amplification and testing (SAT)-TB (three studies; 79%, 66-88%; 72%, 48-88%). In subgroup analysis, molecular diagnostics demonstrated higher sensitivity for pulmonary TB detection in smear-positive specimens. Xpert MTB/RIF, LAMP, LPA, CPA and PCR demonstrated high accuracy overall for pulmonary tuberculosis detection, while SAT-TB had poor performance.

Anthocyanins are important components in skins of red table grapes and contribute to the berries appearance, a key quality characteristic for customers. In recent years, exogenous foliage fertilizers has been applied to grapevines to improve the pigmentation of the fruit. The present study examines the effect on a biostimulant (SUNRED) pre-véraison application in the accumulation of anthocyanins in 'Red Globe' grapes, and investigates the related changes in expression of key genes and their enzyme activities in the flavonoid pathways. Additionally, abscisic acid (S-ABA) was also applied to grapevines to evaluate the comparative effect of SUNRED. Our analyses showed that total anthocyanin contents increased in both SUNRED and S-ABA treated grapes; for S-ABA, a 1% dilution (A100) of the commercially available stock solution treatments represented the greatest effect on pigmentation; for SUNRED, a 0.1% dilution (S1000) was most effective. The anthocyanin contents increased by 1.16-fold and 1.4-fold after A100 and S1000 treatments, respectively. The gene expression analyses showed that almost all genes involved in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway up-regulated after A100 and S1000 treatments, suggesting that the increment in total anthocyanin content was attributed to the increased expression level of related genes. Moreover, the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chalcone isomerase (CHI), UDP glucose: flavonoid 3-o-glucosyl transferase (UFGT) and dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR), key enzymes for biosynthesis of anthocyanin, were increased by the exogenous treatments. Overall, our findings clearly demonstrate that application of exogenous biostimulant have a positive effect on the pigment characteristics of grape crop.

Cognitive impairment is a core feature of schizophrenia (SCH). In addition to the toxic effect of Bilirubin (BIL), it has antioxidant properties that were associated with the psychopathology and cognitive impairment of psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the correlation of serum total BIL (TBIL) concentration with cognitive impairment in SCH patients. We recruited 34 SCH patients and 119 healthy controls (HCs) in this case-control design. Cognition was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Serum TBIL concentration was measured using the immunoturbidimetric method. Serum TBIL concentration was significantly decreased in SCH patients compared to HCs after adjusting for age, gender, and education. Serum TBIL concentration in SCH patients was also positively correlated with the RBANS immediate memory score. Further stepwise multiple regression analysis confirmed the positive association between serum TBIL concentration and immediate memory score in SCH patients. Our findings supported that the decline in serum TBIL concentration was associated with the immediate memory impairment and psychopathology of SCH.

Maritime transport accounts for a majority of trades in volume, of which 70% in value is carried by container ships that transit regular routes on fixed schedules in the ocean. In the present paper, we analyse a data set of global liner shipping as a network of ports. In particular, we construct the network of the ports as the one-mode projection of a bipartite network composed of ports and ship routes. Like other transportation networks, global liner shipping networks may have core-periphery structure, where a core and a periphery are groups of densely and sparsely interconnected nodes, respectively. Core-periphery structure may have practical implications for understanding the robustness, efficiency and uneven development of international transportation systems. We develop an algorithm to detect core-periphery pairs in a network, which allows one to find core and peripheral nodes on different scales and uses a configuration model that accounts for the fact that the network is obtained by the one-mode projection of a bipartite network. We also found that most ports are core (as opposed to peripheral) ports and that ports in some countries in Europe, America and Asia belong to a global core-periphery pair across different scales, whereas ports in other countries do not.

Recent studies demonstrate that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) might be associated with nicotine addiction, and circulating BDNF is a biomarker of memory and general cognitive function. Moreover, studies suggest that a functional polymorphism of the BDNF Val66Met may mediate hippocampal-dependent cognitive functions. We aimed to explore the relationships between smoking, cognitive performance and BDNF in a normal Chinese Han population. We recruited 628 male healthy subjects, inducing 322 smokers and 306 nonsmokers, and genotyped them the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism. Of these, we assessed 114 smokers and 98 nonsmokers on the repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status (RBANS), and 103 smokers and 89 nonsmokers on serum BDNF levels. Smokers scored lower than the nonsmokers on RBANS total score (p = 0.002), immediate memory (p = 0.003) and delayed memory (p = 0.021). BDNF levels among the smokers who were Val allele carriers were correlated with the degree of cognitive impairments, especially attention, as well as with the carbon monoxide concentrations. Our findings suggest that smoking is associated with cognitive impairment in a male Chinese Han population. The association between higher BDNF levels and cognitive impairment, mainly attention in smokers appears to be dependent on the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism.

Maize rough dwarf disease, caused by rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV), is a devastating disease in maize (Zea mays L.). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to play critical roles in regulation of plant growth, development, and adaptation to abiotic and biotic stresses. To elucidate the roles of miRNAs in the regulation of maize in response to RBSDV, we employed high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze the miRNAome and transcriptome following RBSDV infection. A total of 76 known miRNAs, 226 potential novel miRNAs and 351 target genes were identified. Our dataset showed that the expression patterns of 81 miRNAs changed dramatically in response to RBSDV infection. Transcriptome analysis showed that 453 genes were differentially expressed after RBSDV infection. GO, COG and KEGG analysis results demonstrated that genes involved with photosynthesis and metabolism were significantly enriched. In addition, twelve miRNA-mRNA interaction pairs were identified, and six of them were likely to play significant roles in maize response to RBSDV. This study provided valuable information for understanding the molecular mechanism of maize disease resistance, and could be useful in method development to protect maize against RBSDV.

Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) may be complicated with retinal ischemia in some cases. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the relationship between optical intensity on optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retinal ischemia in BRVO. Twenty-seven eyes diagnosed with BRVO without macular edema were classified into two groups based on the presence or absence of retinal ischemia. The optical intensity of inner retinal layers and photoreceptor inner segment ellipsoid zone/retinal pigment epithelium layer (ISe/RPE) in the affected and unaffected regions were measured on OCT. Their ratio (Optical intensity ratio, OIR) was calculated and compared between affected and unaffected region. In the retinal ischemia group, the optical intensity of inner retinal layers was higher in the affected region compared to the unaffected region while the optical intensity of ISe/RPE was low. The OIR was significantly higher in the affected region compared to control (0.83 ± 0.17 vs 0.68 ± 0.09, p < 0.001). However, in the non-ischemic group, there was no significant difference between the affected and unaffected region. The BCVA was moderately correlated with OIR of affected region (r = 0.489, p = 0.010). Our study suggests that optical intensity ratio on OCT is correlated with retinal ischemia in BRVO.

At present, there few studies on the kinematic features of lateral discoid meniscus injury. In this study, a motion capture system was used to investigate the motion characteristics of knees with lateral discoid meniscus after injury, and the differences between the knees with lateral meniscus and intact knees were compared. Fourteen patients diagnosed with unilateral lateral discoid meniscus injury, fourteen patients diagnosed with unilateral lateral meniscus injury, and fourteen normal subjects with healthy knees were recruited and grouped. Through kinematic gait analysis, it was found that the subjects in the two groups with meniscus injuries exhibited significantly smaller ranges of rotation and translation than those with healthy knees on the sagittal, coronal, and horizontal planes, but not in proximal-distal translation. Maximum lateral tibial translation and maximum internal tibial rotation in the knees with lateral discoid meniscus injury were significantly decreased compared to those with lateral meniscus injury. The results show that the kinematic features of knees with lateral discoid meniscus injury are statistically different than those of healthy knees and knees with lateral meniscus injury. This study provides an important reference for the dynamic function of knees with lateral discoid meniscus injury.

In this paper, a tunable broadband metamaterial absorber (MA) based on graphene is investigated theoretically and numerically at mid-infrared regions. Compared with the previously reported multiband graphene-based MAs, a broad bandwidth of 11.7 THz with the absorption over 90% is obtained in the proposed MA, which is composed of a Jerusalem cross (JC) metal encrusting into the slot graphene layer in the top layer. The results show that the origin of broadband absorption is caused by coupling effect between metal and graphene, and this effect is explained by the two-mode waveguide coupling theory. The tunability of MA is achieved via changing the external gate voltage to modify the Fermi energy of graphene. Further results show that the proposed MA can be used as the permittivity sensor with a high absorption. This work indicates that the proposed MA has the potential applications with respect to sensors and infrared absorbers.

The study aimed to identify the lateral heterogeneity of soil physicochemical properties in riparian zones, and its underlying drivers during natural restoration after agricultural abandonment. Abandoned farmlands, after 5-year natural restoration, within 500 m from the edges on both sides of Liaohe River were selected as the study area. Soil physicochemical properties of four lateral buffers (<10 m, 10~100 m, 100~300 m, and >300 m from river edge, respectively) along riparian zones were measured. The results showed that riparian soils were characterized by high sand content (78.88%~96.52%) and poor soil nutrients. Soil silt content, organic carbon (OC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), total nitrogen (TN), and available nitrogen (AN) increased laterally with increasing distance from river edge, while soil sand content decreased. Total phosphorus (TP) and available phosphorus (AP) are not spatially autocorrelated. Soil OC, TN, AN, and CEC along upstream and midstream reaches showed negative spatial autocorrelation along the lateral gradients, and positive along downstream reach. Altitude, distance from river edge and distance from nearest farmland were the pronounced factors affecting soil physicochemical properties in this study.

We performed a meta-analysis aimed to assess the clinical results after transalveolar sinus floor lift without bone grafting in the atrophic maxilla. A systematic electronic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase and The Cochrane Library, followed by a manual search. Two reviewers independently extracted study data and conducted quality assessments. Ten non-controlled studies including 1484 implants and eight controlled studies (5 RCTs and 3 prospective studies) including 817 implants (451 implants in the non-graft group) were enrolled in this study. The survival rate of implants via the graft-free method was 98% (95%CI 96% to 100%). There was no significant difference in the survival rate between the non-graft group and the graft group (RR: 1.02; p = 0.18). No statistically significant difference in marginal bone loss was detected between the groups at 12 months (0.57, p = 0.07) or 36 months (0.05, p = 0.61). The endo-sinus bone gain in the non-graft group was significantly lower than in the graft group at 12 months (-1.10, p = 0.0001) and 36 months (-0.74, p = 0.02). Hence, the available evidence suggests that predictable results could be acquired through transalveolar sinus floor lift without bone grafting, while there may be a trend toward more endo-sinus bone gain with bone grafts.

Children of severe hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) often present with same clinical features as those of mild HFMD during the early stage, yet later deteriorate rapidly with a fulminant disease course. Our goal was to: (1) develop a machine learning system to automatically identify cases with high risk of severe HFMD at the time of admission; (2) compare the effectiveness of the new system with the existing risk scoring system. Data on 2,532 HFMD children admitted between March 2012 and July 2015, were collected retrospectively from a medical center in China. By applying a holdout strategy and a 10-fold cross validation method, we developed four models with the random forest algorithm using different variable sets. The prediction system HFMD-RF based on the model of 16 variables from both the structured and unstructured data, achieved 0.824 sensitivity, 0.931 specificity, 0.916 accuracy, and 0.916 area under the curve in the independent test set. Most remarkably, HFMD-RF offers significant gains with respect to the commonly used pediatric critical illness score in clinical practice. As all the selected risk factors can be easily obtained, HFMD-RF might prove to be useful for reductions in mortality and complications of severe HFMD.

Prolonged use of mechanical ventilation (MV) leads to atrophy and dysfunction of the major inspiratory muscle, the diaphragm, contributing to ventilator dependence. Numerous studies have shown that proteolysis and oxidative stress are among the major effectors of ventilator-induced diaphragm muscle dysfunction (VIDD), but the upstream initiator(s) of this process remain to be elucidated. We report here that periodic diaphragm contraction via phrenic nerve stimulation (PNS) substantially reduces MV-induced proteolytic activity and oxidative stress in the diaphragm. We show that MV rapidly induces phosphorylation of Smad3, and PNS nearly completely prevents this effect. In cultured cells, overexpressed Smad3 is sufficient to induce oxidative stress and protein degradation, whereas inhibition of Smad3 activity suppresses these events. In rats subjected to MV, inhibition of Smad3 activity by SIS3 suppresses oxidative stress and protein degradation in the diaphragm and prevents the reduction in contractility that is induced by MV. Smad3's effect appears to link to STAT3 activity, which we previously identified as a regulator of VIDD. Inhibition of Smad3 suppresses STAT3 signaling both in vitro and in vivo. Thus, MV-induced diaphragm inactivity initiates catabolic changes via rapid activation of Smad3 signaling. An early intervention with PNS and/or pharmaceutical inhibition of Smad3 may prevent clinical VIDD.

To realize photothermal therapy (PTT) of cancer/tumor both the photothermal conversion and temperature detection are required. Usually, the temperature detection in PTT needs complicated instruments, and the therapy process is out of temperature control in the present investigations. In this work, we attempt to develop a novel material for achieving both the photothermal conversion and temperature sensing and control at the same time. To this end, a core-shell structure with NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ core for temperature detection and NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ shell for photothermal conversion was designed and prepared. The crystal structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the temperature sensing properties for the NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ and core-shell NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ @NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ nanoparticles were studied. It was found that the temperature sensing performance of the core-shell nanoparticles did not become worse due to coating of NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ shell. The photothermal conversion behaviors were examined in cyclohexane solution based on the temperature response, the NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ @NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ core-shell nanoparticles exhibited more effective photothermal conversion than that of NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ nanoparticles, and a net temperature increment of about 7 °C was achieved by using the core-shell nanoparticles.

Water-saving and drought-resistantce rice (WDR) breeding practices have greatly increased grain yield and drought resistance. To study the genetic basis of adaptation to drought, transcriptome sequences from the WDR maintainer line HuHan2B and the recurrent parent HanFengB were analyzed for alternative splicing (AS) complexity. Intron retention, the dominant AS type, accounted for 42% of the observed AS events. Differential expression analysis revealed transcripts were preferentially expressed in different varieties and conditions. Based on gene ontology predictions, the biological functions of drought-induced transcripts were significantly enriched in genes involved in transcription regulation, chloroplast components and response to abiotic stimulus in HuHan2B, whereas developmental processes for reproduction were primarily enriched in HanFengB. The regulatory network of transcription factors was driven by cohorts of transcript splicing targets, resulting in more diversified regulatory relationships due to AS complexity than in our previous findings. Moreover, several genes were validated to accumulate novel splicing transcripts in a drought-induced manner. Together, these results suggest that HuHan2B and HanFengB share similar AS features but that a subset of genes with increased levels of AS involved in transcription regulatory networks may contribute an additional level of control for genetic improvement of drought resistance in rice maintainer HuHan2B through breeding.

A single-layer microwave absorbing structure composed of the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) powders and polycrystalline iron fibers (PIFs) with thickness of 2 mm, which has a periodic array of circular hole, is designed and fabricated using the mechanical method. We show that the reflection loss (RL) can be easily adjusted by changing the geometric parameters. The maximum RL is 18.7 dB at 15 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth of 1.7 GHz for the diameter of circular hole is 10 mm, and enhanced to be 23.7 dB at 15.1 GHz with the corresponding bandwidth of 7.2 GHz when the diameter decreases to 5 mm. The measured absorption of the composite is in good accordance with the simulation results. Furthermore, the possible absorption mechanism of the composite has been discussed. Our results illustrate that the integration of frequency selective surface (FSS) with traditional PIFs can achieve a wide frequency range of a strong absorption.

An in-situ real-time synchrotron-based grazing incidence X-ray diffraction was systematically used to investigate the crystal structural evolution of carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix (C/C) composite impregnated with FLiNaK molten salt during the heat-treatment process. It was found that the crystallographic thermal expansion and contraction rate of interlayer spacing d 002 in C/C composite with FLiNaK salt impregnation is smaller than that in the virgin sample, indicating the suppression on interlayer spacing from FLiNaK salt impregnated. Meanwhile the crystallite size L C002 of C/C composite with FLiNaK salt impregnation is larger than the virgin one after whole heat treatment process, indicating that FLiNaK salt impregnation could facilitate the crystallization of C/C composite after heat treatment process. This improved crystallization in C/C composite with FLiNaK salt impregnation suggests the synthetic action of the salt squeeze effect on crooked carbon layer and the release of internal residual stress after heating-cooling process. Thus, the present study not only contribute to reveal the interaction mechanism between C/C composite and FLiNaK salt in high temperature environment, but also promote the design of safer and more reliable C/C composite materials for the next generation molten salt reactor.
