Abstract The main purpose of this article is to investigate the qualitative behavior and traveling wave solutions of the fractional stochastic Kraenkel–Manna–Merle equations, which is commonly used to simulate the zero conductivity nonlinear propagation behavior of short waves in saturated ferromagnetic materials. Firstly, fractional stochastic Kraenkel–Manna–Merle equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations by using the traveling wave transformation. Secondly, the phase portraits, sensitivity analysis, and Poincaré sections of the two-dimensional dynamic system and its perturbation system of ordinary differential equations are drawn. Finally, the traveling wave solutions of fractional stochastic Kraenkel–Manna–Merle equations are obtained based on the analysis theory of planar dynamical system. Moreover, the obtained three-dimensional graphs of random solutions, two-dimensional graphs of random solutions, and three-dimensional graphs of deterministic solutions are drawn.

Abstract This work investigates the Kraenkel-Manna-Merle (KMM) system, which models the nonlinear propagation of short waves in saturated ferromagnetic materials subjected to an external magnetic field, despite the absence of electrical conductivity. The study aims to explore and derive new solitary wave solutions for this system using two distinct methodological approaches. In the first approach, the KMM system is transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) via Lie group transformation. The resulting ODEs are then solved analytically using a similarity invariant approach, leading to the discovery of various types of solitary wave solutions, including bright, dark, and exponential solitons. The second approach involves applying wave and Galilean transformations to reduce the KMM system to a system of two ODEs, both with and without damping effects. This reduced system is further analyzed to investigate its bifurcation behavior, sensitivity to initial conditions, and chaotic dynamics. The analysis reveals the presence of strange multi-scroll chaotic dynamics in the presence of damping and off-boosting dynamics without damping. In addition to these approaches, the study also applies the planar dynamical theory to obtain further new soliton solutions of the KMM system. These solitons include bright, kink, dark, and periodic solutions, each of which has been visualized through 3D and 2D graphs. The results of this research provide new insights into the dynamics of the KMM system, with potential applications in magnetic data storage, magnonic devices, material science, and spintronics.

Abstract This work dives into the Conformable Stochastic Kraenkel-Manna-Merle System (CSKMMS), an important mathematical model for exploring phenomena in ferromagnetic materials. A wide spectrum of stochastic soliton solutions that include hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational functions, is generated using a modified version of Extended Direct Algebraic Method (EDAM) namely r+mEDAM. These stochastic soliton solutions have practical relevance for describing magnetic field behaviour in zero-conductivity ferromagnets. By using Maple to generate 2D and 3D graphical representations, the study analyses how stochastic terms and noise impact these soliton solutions. Finally, this study adds to our knowledge of magnetic field behaviour in ferromagnetic materials by shedding light on the effect of noise on soliton processes inside the CSKMMS.

Abstract Restoration of vulnerable marine habitats is becoming increasingly popular to cope with widespread habitat loss and the resulting decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services. Lately, restoration strategies have been employed to enhance the recovery of degraded meadows of the Mediterranean endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Typically, habitat restoration success is evaluated by the persistence of foundation species after transplantation (e.g., plant survival and growth) on the short and long-term, although successful plant responses do not necessarily reflect the recovery of ecosystem biodiversity and functions. Recently, soundscape (the spatial, temporal and frequency attribute of ambient sound and types of sound sources characterizing it) has been related to different habitat conditions and community structures. Thus, a successful restoration action should lead to acoustic restoration and soundscape ecology could represent an important component of restoration monitoring, leading to assess successful habitat and community restoration. Here, we evaluated acoustic community and metrics in a P. oceanica restored meadow and tested whether the plant transplant effectiveness after one year was accompanied by a restored soundscape. With this goal, acoustic recordings from degraded, transplanted and reference meadows were collected in Sardinia (Italy) using passive acoustic monitoring devices. Soundscape at each meadow type was examined using both spectral analysis and classification of fish calls based on a catalogue of fish sounds from the Mediterranean Sea. Seven different fish sounds were recorded: most of them were present in the reference and transplanted meadows and were associated to Sciaena umbra and Scorpaena spp. Sound Pressure Level (SPL, in dB re: 1 μPa-rms) and Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI) were influenced by the meadow type. Particularly higher values were associated to the transplanted meadow. SPL and ACI calculated in the 200–2000 Hz frequency band were also related to high abundance of fish sounds (chorus). These results showed that meadow restoration may lead to the recovery of soundscape and the associated community, suggesting that short term acoustic monitoring can provide complementary information to evaluate seagrass restoration success.

Abstract IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) is the most prevalent glomerular disease worldwide. Complement system activation is crucial in its pathogenesis. Few studies correlated serum C3 and C4 with disease activity and prognosis. This retrospective study investigated the prognostic value of serum complement at the time of diagnosis in patients with IgAN. Specifically we evaluated whether adding serum C3 and C4 levels to established predictive models-one based on variables related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and another incorporating variables from the International IgA Prediction Tool (IntIgAPT)-enhances the accuracy of outcome prediction. A composite renal outcome was defined as 50% decline in eGFR or onset of kidney failure. 101 patients were stratified according to baseline C3 levels in three groups (Low, Medium and High). During a median follow-up of 54 months, the Low group exhibited higher incidence of primary outcome (16.3 events vs 2.9 and 1.7 events × 100 pts/year, p = 0.0026). Model-1 (M1), consisting of CKD progression variables, and Model-3 (M3), comprising IntIgANPT variables, were implemented with baseline C3 and C4 to create Model-2 (M2) and Model-4 (M4), respectively. M2 demonstrated better predictive performance over M1, showing higher discrimination (lower AIC and BIC, higher C-index and NR2). Similarly, M4 outperformed M3, showing enhanced outcome prediction when C3 and C4 levels were added. Implementation of serum C3 and C4 can enhance prediction accuracy of already-validated prognostic models in IgAN. Lower C3 and higher C4 levels were associated with poorer prognosis, highlighting a more 'Complement-Pathic' subset of patients.

Abstract Due to the current environmental situation and human health, a green manufacturing system is very essential in the manufacturing world. Several researchers have developed various types of green manufacturing models by considering green products, green investments, carbon emission taxes, etc. Motivated by this topic, a green production model is formulated by considering selling price, time, warranty period and green level dependent demand with a carbon emission tax policy. Also, the production rate of the system is an unknown function of time. Per unit production cost of the products is taken as increasing function of production rate and green level of the products. In our proposed model, carbon emission rate is taken as linear function of time. Then, an optimization problem of the production model is constructed. To validate of our proposed model, a numerical example is considered and solved it by AHA. Further, other five metaheuristics algorithms (AEFA, FA, GWOA, WOA and EOA) are taken to compare the results obtained from AHA. Also, concavity of the average profit function and convergence graph of different metaheuristics algorithms are presented. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate the impact of different system parameters on our optimal policy and reach a fruitful conclusion from this study.

Abstract This study aims to optimize the power generation of a conventional Manzanares solar chimney (SC) plant through strategic modifications to the collector inlet height, chimney diameter, and chimney divergence. Employing a finite volume-based solver for numerical analysis, we systematically scrutinize influential geometric parameters, including collector height (h i = 1.85 to 0.1 m), chimney inlet diameter (d ch = 10.16 to 55.88 m), and chimney outlet diameter (d o = 10.16 to 30.48 m). Our findings demonstrate that reducing the collector inlet height consistently leads to increased power output. The optimal collector inlet height of h i = 0.2 m results in a significant power increase from 51 to 117.42 kW (~ 2.3 times) without additional installation costs, accompanied by an efficiency of 0.25%. Conversely, enlarging the chimney diameter decreases the chimney base velocity and suction pressure. However, as turbine-driven power generation rises, the flow becomes stagnant beyond a chimney diameter of 45.72 m. At this point, power generation reaches 209 kW, nearly four times greater than the Manzanares plant, with an efficiency of 0.44%. Nevertheless, the cost of expanding the chimney diameter is substantial. Furthermore, the impact of chimney divergence is evident, with power generation, collector efficiency, overall efficiency, and collector inlet velocity all peaking at an outer chimney diameter of 15.24 m (corresponding to an area ratio of 2.25). At this configuration, power generation increases to 75.91 kW, approximately 1.5 times more than the initial design. Remarkably, at a low collector inlet height of 0.2 m, combining it with a chimney diameter of 4.5 times the chimney inlet diameter (4.5d ch) results in an impressive power output of 635.02 kW, signifying a substantial 12.45-fold increase. To model the performance under these diverse conditions, an artificial neural network (ANN) is effectively utilized.

Abstract Several COVID-19 vaccines, some more efficacious than others, are now available and deployed, including multiple mRNA- and viral vector-based vaccines. With the focus on creating cost-effective solutions that can reach the low- and medium- income world, GreenLight Biosciences has developed an mRNA vaccine candidate, GLB-COV2-043, encoding for the full-length SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan wild-type spike protein. In pre-clinical studies in mice, GLB-COV2-043 induced robust antigen-specific binding and virus-neutralizing antibody responses targeting homologous and heterologous SARS-CoV-2 variants and a TH1-biased immune response. Boosting mice with monovalent or bivalent mRNA-LNPs provided rapid recall and long-lasting neutralizing antibody titers, an increase in antibody avidity and breadth that was held over time and generation of antigen-specific memory B- and T- cells. In hamsters, vaccination with GLB-COV2-043 led to lower viral loads, reduced incidence of SARS-CoV-2-related microscopic findings in lungs, and protection against weight loss after heterologous challenge with Omicron BA.1 live virus. Altogether, these data indicate that GLB-COV2-043 mRNA-LNP vaccine candidate elicits robust protective humoral and cellular immune responses and establishes our mRNA-LNP platform for subsequent clinical evaluations.

Abstract A highway embankment founded on a sloping tectonised marly-sandstone flysch formation located in the Apennines chain (Italy) has been affected for about 30 years by continuous slow movements. Given the strategic importance of the involved infrastructure, different investigation and monitoring campaigns have been carried out to get information about the properties of the involved soils and collect data about the displacements and piezometric regime. Field monitoring, in particular, reveals that the observed displacements result from a failure mechanism involving both the embankment and the foundation soils. However, significant gaps in monitoring jeopardize the possibility to assess the long-term trends in the displacements and piezometric regime and the significance of weather forcing in regulating the phenomena. To address such research questions, a procedure, easily transferable in different contexts, is proposed and applied to the test case: a simple hydrological proxy indeed permits evaluating the rate of movement featured by weatherinduced seasonal variability. Such a mechanical response has been confirmed by the results of a simplified numerical model aimed at finding out the main features of the observed kinematics accounting for a hydrological balance of the involved area.

Abstract Malaria prevalence has become medically important and a socioeconomic impediment for the endemic regions, including Purulia, West Bengal. Geo-environmental variables, humidity, altitude, and land use patterns are responsible for malaria. For surveillance of the endemic nature of Purulia’s blocks, statistical and spatiotemporal factors analysis have been done here. Also, a novel approach for the Pf malaria treatment using methanolic leaf extract of Morus alba S1 has significantly reduced the parasite load. The EC50 value (1.852) of the methanolic extract of M. alba S1 with P. falciparum 3D7 strain is close to the EC50 value (0.998) of the standard drug chloroquine with the same chloroquine-sensitive strain. Further studies with an in-silico model have shown successful interaction between DHFR and the phytochemicals. Both 1-octadecyne and oxirane interacted favourably, which was depicted through GC–MS analysis. The predicted binary logistic regression model will help the policy makers for epidemiological surveillance in malaria-prone areas worldwide when substantial climate variables create a circumstance favourable for malaria. From the in vitro and in silico studies, it can be concluded that the methanolic extract of M. alba S1 leaves were proven to have promising antiplasmodial activity. Thus, there is a scope for policy-driven approach for discovering and developing these lead compounds and undermining the rising resistance to the frontline anti-malarial drugs in the world.

Abstract Global warming is expected to have inexorable and profound effects on marine ecosystems, particularly in foundation species such as seagrasses. Identifying responses to warming and comparing populations across natural temperature gradients can inform how future warming will impact the structure and function of ecosystems. Here, we investigated how thermal environment, intra-shoot and spatial variability modulate biochemical responses of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Through a space-for-time substitution study, Fatty acid (FA) profiles on the second and fifth leaf of the shoots were quantified at eight sites in Sardinia along a natural sea surface temperature (SST) summer gradient (about 4 °C). Higher mean SST were related to a decrease in the leaf total fatty acid content (LTFA), a reduction in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), omega-3/omega-6 PUFA and PUFA/saturated fatty acids (SFA) ratios and an increase in SFA, monounsaturated fatty acids and carbon elongation index (CEI, C18:2 n-6/C16:2 n-6) ratio. Results also revealed that FA profiles were strongly influenced by leaf age, independently of SST and spatial variability within sites. Overall, this study evidenced that the sensitive response of P. oceanica FA profiles to intra-shoot and spatial variability must not be overlooked when considering their response to temperature changes.

Abstract Bioconvective heat and mass transport phenomena have recently been the subject of interest in diverse fields of applications pertaining to the motion of fluids and their thermophysical properties. The transport processes in a system involving triple convective phenomena, irregular geometry, and boundary conditions constitute a complex phenomenon. This work aims to explore the mixed thermo-bioconvection of magnetically susceptible fluid containing copper nanoparticles and oxytactic bacteria in a novel W-shaped porous cavity. The buoyant convention is generated due to the isothermal heating at the wavy bottom wall, whereas the mixed convection is induced due to the shearing motion of the top-cooled sliding wall. Furthermore, the bioconvection is induced due to the manifestation of oxytactic bacteria or organisms. The inclined sidewalls are insulated. The geometry is packed with water based Cu nanoparticle mixed porous structure, which is subjected to a magnetizing field acted horizontally. The complex transport equations are transformed into nondimensional forms, which are then computed using the finite volume-based developed code. The coupled triple-convective flow physics are explored for a wide range of involved controlling parameters, which could provide helpful insight to the system designer for its proper operation. The shape of geometry can be considered one of the important parameters to control the heat and mass transport phenomena. In general, the influence of amplitude (δ) is more compared to the waviness number (m) of the undulations. The magnitude of heat (Nu) and mass (Sh) transfer rate for the W-shaped cavity is high compared to conventional square and trapezoidal-shaped cavities. The output of the analysis could be very helpful for the designer for modeling devices operating on nanotechnology-based bioconvection, microbial fuel cells, and others.

Abstract Staphylococcus aureus adapts to different environments by sensing and responding to diverse environmental cues. The responses are coordinately regulated by regulatory proteins, and small regulatory RNAs at the transcriptional and translational levels. Here, we characterized teg58, a SarA repressed sRNA, using ChIP-Seq and RNA-Seq analysis of a sarA mutant. Phenotypic and genetic analyses indicated that inactivation of teg58 led to reduced biofilm formation in a process that is independent of SarA, agr, PIA, and PSMs. RNA-Seq analysis of teg58 mutant revealed up-regulation of arginine biosynthesis genes (i.e., argGH) as well as the ability of the mutant to grow in a chemical defined medium (CDM) lacking l-arginine. Exogenous l-arginine or endogenous induction of argGH led to decreased biofilm formation in parental strains. Further analysis in vitro and in vivo demonstrated that the specific interaction between teg58 and the argGH occurred at the post-transcriptional level to repress arginine synthesis. Biochemical and genetic analyses of various arginine catabolic pathway genes demonstrated that the catabolic pathway did not play a significant role in reduced biofilm formation in the teg58 mutant. Overall, results suggest that teg58 is a regulatory sRNA that plays an important role in modulating arginine biosynthesis and biofilm formation in S. aureus.

Abstract Environmental crises, declining factor productivity, and shrinking natural resource is a threat to global agricultural sustainability. The task is much more daunting in the Indo-Gangetic northern plains of India, where depletion of the underground water table and erratic rains due to the changing climate pose a major challenge to agriculture. To address these challenges a field investigation was carried out during 2016–2018 to test the efficacy of biopolymeric superabsorbent hydrogels namely Pusa Hydrogel (P-hydrogel: a semi-synthetic cellulose derivative-based product) and kaolin derivative of Pusa Hydrogel (K-hydrogel: semi-synthetic cellulose derivative) to assess their effect on crop and water productivity, soil moisture, root dynamics, and economics of soybean (Glycine max L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) system under three irrigation regimes namely full irrigation, limited irrigation and rainfed. The results revealed that the full irrigation along with P-hydrogel led to enhanced grain yield, biomass yield, and water productivity (WP) of soybean (1.61–10.5%, 2.2–9.5%, and 2.15–21.8%, respectively) and wheat (11.1–18.3%, 12–54% and 11.1–13.1%, respectively) over control plots. Likewise, under water stressed plots of rainfed conditions with P-hydrogel exhibited 52.7 and 20.6% higher system yields (in terms of wheat equivalent yield) over control and other combinations during the respective study years. Whereas the magnitude of increase in system yield under limited irrigation with P-hydrogel was ~ 15.1% and under full irrigation with P-hydrogel was 8.0–19.4%. Plots treated with P-hydrogel retained 3.0–5.0% higher soil moisture compared to no-hydrogel plots, while K-hydrogel treated plots held the lower moisture (4.0–6.0%) than the control. In terms of profitability, full irrigation along with P-hydrogel plots registered 12.97% higher economic returns over control. The results suggested that P-hydrogel (2.5 kg ha−1) reduces runoff water loss in full irrigation applied plots and retained more water, where loss of water is more thus reduces number of irrigations. Hence P-hydrogel with irrigation water is a viable option for sustainable production of soybean-wheat systems in the Indo-Gangetic plains of India and other similar eco-regions of the world.

Abstract One of the most studied aspects of animal communication is the acoustic repertoire difference between populations of the same species. While numerous studies have investigated the variability of bottlenose dolphin whistles between populations, very few studies have focused on the signature whistles alone and the factors underlying differentiation of signature whistles are still poorly understood. Here we describe the signature whistles produced by six distinct geographical units of the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the Mediterranean Sea and identify the main determinants of their variability. Particularly, the influence of the region (proxy of genetic distance), the geographic site, and the environmental (sea bottom-related) and demographical (population-related) conditions on the acoustic structure of signature whistles was evaluated. The study provides the first evidence that the genetic structure, which distinguishes the eastern and western Mediterranean bottlenose dolphin populations has no strong influence on the acoustic structure of their signature whistles, and that the geographical isolation between populations only partially affected whistle variability. The environmental conditions of the areas where the whistles developed and the demographic characteristics of the belonging populations strongly influenced signature whistles, in accordance with the “acoustic adaptation hypothesis” and the theory of signature whistle determination mediated by learning.

Abstract Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is mainly cultivated, both as fresh and dried herb, for several purposes, such as ailments, drugs, and spices. To evaluate the influence of some drying methods on the chemical composition of the essential oil of oregano, its aerial parts were dehydrated by convective drying techniques (shade, static oven), microwave-assisted heating (three different treatments) and osmotic treatment. The oils were analyzed by GC-FID and GC–MS. The highest essential oil yield was achieved from microwave and shade drying methods. In total, 39 components were found, with carvacrol (ranging from 56.2 to 81.4%) being the main constituent; other compounds present in lower amounts were p-cymene (1.6–17.7%), γ-terpinene (0.8–14.2%), α-pinene (0.1–2.1%), thymol methyl ether (0.4–1.8%) and thimoquinone (0.5–3.5%). The essential oil yields varied among the different treatments as well as the relative compositions. The percentages of p-cymene, γ-terpinene and α-pinene decreased significantly in the dried sample compared with the fresh sample; on the other hand, carvacrol, isoborneol and linalool increased significantly in the dried materials. The choice of the drying method for obtaining the essential oil therefore appears crucial not only in relation to the higher yield but also and above all in reference to the percentage presence of components that can direct the essential oil toward an appropriate use.

Abstract Dicarboxylic amino acid-based surfactants (N-dodecyl derivatives of -aminomalonate, -aspartate, and -glutamate) in combination with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) form a variety of aggregates. Composition and concentration-dependent mixtures exhibit liquid crystal, gel, precipitate, and clear isotropic phases. Liquid crystalline patterns, formed by surfactant mixtures, were identified by polarizing optical microscopy. FE-SEM studies reveal the existence of surface morphologies of different mixed aggregates. Phase transition and associated weight loss were found to depend on the composition where thermotropic behaviours were revealed through combined differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric studies. Systems comprising more than 60 mol% HTAB demonstrate shear-thinning behaviour. Gels cause insignificant toxicity to human peripheral lymphocytes and irritation to bare mouse skin; they do not display the symptoms of cutaneous irritation, neutrophilic invasion, and inflammation (erythema, edema, and skin thinning) as evidenced by cumulative irritancy index score. Gels also exhibit substantial antibacterial effects on Staphylococcus aureus, a potent causative agent of skin and soft tissue infections, suggesting its possible application as a vehicle for topical dermatological drug delivery.

Abstract Purulia is a malaria-prone district in West Bengal, India, with approximately half of the blocks defined as malaria endemic. We analyzed the malaria case in each block of the Purulia district from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020. As per the API, 20 blocks of Purulia were assigned to four different categories (0–3) and mapped using ArcGIS software. An exponential decay model was fitted to forecast the trend of malaria cases for each block of Purulia (2021–2025). There was a sharp decrease in total malaria cases and API from 2016 to 2020 due to the mass distribution of LLINs. The majority of cases (72.63%) were found in ≥ 15-year age group. Males were more prone to malaria (60.09%). Malaria was highly prevalent among Scheduled Tribes (48.44%). Six blocks were reported in Category 3 (high risk) and none in Category 0 (no risk) in 2016, while no blocks were determined to be in Category 3, and three blocks were in Category 0 in 2020. The exponential decay model prediction is oriented towards gaining malaria-free status in thirteen blocks of Purulia by 2025. This study will incite the government to uphold and strengthen the current efforts to meet the malaria elimination goals.

Abstract Comparing populations across temperature gradients can inform how global warming will impact the structure and function of ecosystems. Shoot density, morphometry and productivity of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica to temperature variation was quantified at eight locations in Sardinia (western Mediterranean Sea) along a natural sea surface temperature (SST) gradient. The locations are spanned for a narrow range of latitude (1.5°), allowing the minimization of the effect of eventual photoperiod variability. Mean SST predicted P. oceanica meadow structure, with increased temperature correlated with higher shoot density, but lower leaf and rhizome width, and rhizome biomass. Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) strongly impacted seagrass traits independent of SST. Disentangling the effects of SST and Chl-a on seagrass meadow shoot density revealed that they work independently, but in the same direction with potential synergism. Space-for-time substitution predicts that global warming will trigger denser seagrass meadows with slender shoots, fewer leaves, and strongly impact seagrass ecosystem. Future investigations should evaluate if global warming will erode the ecosystem services provided by seagrass meadows.

Abstract We present a 3D model of the main crustal boundaries beneath the Campanian region and the onshore and offshore surrounding areas, based on high-resolution potential field data. Our main objective is the definition of the main structural interfaces in the whole Campanian region from gravity and magnetic data, thanks to their ability to define them on a regional and continuous way. The complex morphology of the Mesozoic carbonate platform, which is fundamental to constrain the top of geothermal reservoir, was reconstructed by inverting the vertical gradient of gravity. We assumed local information from seismic models and boreholes to improve the model. We modeled the deep crustal structures by spectral analysis of Bouguer gravity and magnetic data. The inferred depth estimates indicate a shallow crystalline basement below the Tyrrhenian crust and the Apulian foreland and a significant depression beneath the Bradanic foredeep. The map of the Moho boundary shows a NE-SE verging trough below the Southern Apennine chain and two pronounced uplifts beneath the foreland and the Tyrrhenian crust. We also estimated the depth to the magnetic bottom, showing a thick magnetic crust below the mountain chain and shallow depths where the crustal heat flow is high. The models were compared with seismic sections along selected profiles; a good agreement was observed, despite of some inherent lower resolution for the gravity modelling from spectral methods. The regional covering and the continuity of our estimated crustal interfaces make it a new and valid reference for further geological, geophysical and geothermal studies, especially in areas such as northern and eastern Campania, where there is an incomplete geophysical and geological information.

Abstract Cervical cancer affects more than 0.5 million women annually causing more than 0.3 million deaths. Detection of cancer in its early stages is of prime importance for eradicating the disease from the patient’s body. However, regular population-wise screening of cancer is limited by its expensive and labour intensive detection process, where clinicians need to classify individual cells from a stained slide consisting of more than 100,000 cervical cells, for malignancy detection. Thus, Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems are used as a viable alternative for easy and fast detection of cancer. In this paper, we develop such a method where we form an ensemble-based classification model using three Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures, namely Inception v3, Xception and DenseNet-169 pre-trained on ImageNet dataset for Pap stained single cell and whole-slide image classification. The proposed ensemble scheme uses a fuzzy rank-based fusion of classifiers by considering two non-linear functions on the decision scores generated by said base learners. Unlike the simple fusion schemes that exist in the literature, the proposed ensemble technique makes the final predictions on the test samples by taking into consideration the confidence in the predictions of the base classifiers. The proposed model has been evaluated on two publicly available benchmark datasets, namely, the SIPaKMeD Pap Smear dataset and the Mendeley Liquid Based Cytology (LBC) dataset, using a 5-fold cross-validation scheme. On the SIPaKMeD Pap Smear dataset, the proposed framework achieves a classification accuracy of 98.55% and sensitivity of 98.52% in its 2-class setting, and 95.43% accuracy and 98.52% sensitivity in its 5-class setting. On the Mendeley LBC dataset, the accuracy achieved is 99.23% and sensitivity of 99.23%. The results obtained outperform many of the state-of-the-art models, thereby justifying the effectiveness of the same. The relevant codes of this proposed model are publicly available on GitHub .

Abstract This retrospective study aimed to explore the relative efficacy and safety of different tacrolimus (TAC) concentrations in the treatment of patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). A total of 260 IMN patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) were recruited. Among these, 125 patients had TAC concentrations no greater than 5 ng/ml (CTAC ≤ 5 ng/ml), and 135 patients had TAC concentrations greater than 5 ng/ml (CTAC > 5 ng/ml). The primary outcomes included complete remission (CR) rates and overall (OR) response rates. The secondary outcomes included 24-h urinary protein (24-h UP), serum albumin and serum creatinine, and adverse events (AEs). During the 12-month follow-up, the overall response rates were significantly different between the CTAC ≤ 5 ng/ml group and the CTAC > 5 ng/ml group (P 5 ng/ml group had improved levels of 24 h UP (P = 0.017) and serum albumin (P = 0.010). Moreover, the incidences of acute reversible nephrotoxicity (P 5 ng/ml group. The CTAC > 5 ng/ml group was improved relative to the CTAC ≤ 5 ng/ml group in terms of a PR and CR at 6 months, but there was no difference in the CR between the two groups at 12 months.

Abstract Artemisinin is the frontline fast-acting anti-malarial against P. falciparum. Emergence and spread of resistant parasite in eastern-India poses a threat to national malaria control programs. Therefore, the objective of our study is to evaluate the artesunate-sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine efficacy in Central India. 180 monoclonal P. falciparum-infected patients received standard ASSP therapy during August 2015–January 2017, soon after diagnosis and monitored over next 42-days. Artemisinin-resistance was assessed through in-vivo parasite clearance half-life (PC1/2), ex-vivo ring-stage survivability (RSA), and genome analysis of kelch13 and other candidate gene (pfcrt, pfmdr1, pfatpase 6, pfdhfr and pfdhps). Of 180 P. falciparum positive patients, 9.5% showed increased PC1/2 (> 5.5 h), among them eleven isolates (6.1%) showed reduced sensitivity to RSA. Abstract We provide here a first-hand description of the coseismic surface effects caused by the Mw 6.4 Petrinja earthquake that hit central Croatia on 29 December 2020. This was one of the strongest seismic events that occurred in Croatia in the last two centuries. Field surveys in the epicentral area allowed us to observe and map primary coseismic effects, including geometry and kinematics of surface faulting, as well as secondary effects, such as liquefaction, sinkholes and landslides. The resulting dataset consists of homogeneous georeferenced records identifying 222 observation points, each of which contains a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 14 numeric and string fields of relevant information. The earthquake caused surface faulting defining a typical ‘conjugate’ fault pattern characterized by Y and X shears, tension cracks (T fractures), and compression structures (P shears) within a ca. 10 km wide (across strike), NW–SE striking right-lateral strike-slip shear zone (i.e., the Petrinja Fault Zone, PFZ). We believe that the results of the field survey provide fundamental information to improve the interpretation of seismological, GPS and InSAR data of this earthquake. Moreover, the data related to the surface faulting may impact future studies focused on earthquake processes in active strike-slip settings, integrating the estimates of slip amount and distribution in assessing the hazard associated with capable transcurrent faults.

Abstract Predicting community-level responses to seawater warming is a pressing goal of global change ecologists. How far such predictions can be derived from a fine gradient of thermal environments needs to be explored, even if ignoring water climatology does not allow estimating subtidal marine heat waves. In this study insights about the influence of the thermal environment on the coralligenous community structure were gained by considering sites (Sardinia, Italy) at different temperature conditions. Heating events were measured (by loggers at 18 m, 23 m, 28 m, 33 m and 38 m deep) and proxies for their duration (the maximum duration of events warmer than the 90th percentile temperature), intensity (the median temperature) and variability (the number of daily ΔT larger than the mean daily ΔT, and the number of heating events larger in ΔT than the 90th percentile ΔT) were selected by GAM models. Reliable predictions of decrease in coralligenous richness of taxa/morphological groups, with relevant increment in turfs and encrusting coralline algae abundance at the expenses of bryozoans were made. Associations to the different types of heating descriptor have highlighted the aspect (intensity, duration or variability) of the heating events and the threshold for each of them responsible for the trajectories of change.

Abstract We aim at modeling the main crustal and thermal interfaces of Sicily (Italy), a key area for understanding the geological complexity at the collisional boundary between the African and European plates. To this end, we analyze the gravity and magnetic fields, integrated with information from well logs, geology, heat flow, and seismic data. In order to make the most accurate description of the crustal structure of the area, we modeled with different methodologies the carbonate and crystalline top surfaces, as well as the Moho and the Curie isotherm surface. The reconstruction of the carbonate platform is achieved using a nonlinear 3D method constrained by the available seismic and borehole data. The crystalline top, the Curie, and the Moho are instead estimated by spectral analysis of both gravity and magnetic data. The results show a complex carbonate basement and a deep crystalline crust in central Sicily, with a prominent uplift beneath the Hyblean Plateau. Maps of the Moho and the Curie isotherm surface define a variable thermal and structural setting of Sicily, with very thin crust in the southern and eastern sectors, where high heat flow is found, and deep and cold crust below the Caltanissetta Basin.

Abstract The topical application of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is recognized as a useful approach to improve skin health. This work aims to characterize by a multidisciplinary approach, the wound healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-pathogens and proteomic effects of six LAB lysates, belonging to the genus Lactobacillus. Our results demonstrated that the lysates of tested LAB stimulated the proliferation of keratinocytes, and that L. plantarum SGL 07 and L. salivarius SGL 19 accelerated the re-epithelization by inducing keratinocyte migration. The bacterial lysates also reduced the secretion of specific pro-inflammatory mediators from keratinocytes. Furthermore, viable L. salivarius SGL 19 and L. fermentum SGL 10 had anti-pathogenic effects against S. aureus and S. pyogenes, while L. brevis SGL 12 and L. paracasei SGL 04 inhibited S. aureus and S. pyogenes, respectively. The tested lactobacilli lysates also induced specific proteome modulation of the exposed keratinocytes, involving dysregulation of proteins (such as interleukin enhancer-binding factor 2 and ATP-dependent RNA helicase) and pathways (such as cytokine, NF-kB, Hedgehog, and RUNX signaling) associated with their specific wound healing and anti-inflammatory effects. This study indicates the different potential of selected lactobacilli, suggesting that they may be successfully used in the future together with conventional therapies to bring relief from skin disorders.
