Thanks to the many chemical and nutritional components it carries, diet critically affects human health. However, the currently available comprehensive databases on food composition cover only a tiny fraction of the total number of chemicals present in our food, focusing on the nutritional components essential for our health. Indeed, thousands of other molecules, many of which have well documented health implications, remain untracked. To explore the body of knowledge available on food composition, we built FoodMine, an algorithm that uses natural language processing to identify papers from PubMed that potentially report on the chemical composition of garlic and cocoa. After extracting from each paper information on the reported quantities of chemicals, we find that the scientific literature carries extensive information on the detailed chemical components of food that is currently not integrated in databases. Finally, we use unsupervised machine learning to create chemical embeddings, finding that the chemicals identified by FoodMine tend to have direct health relevance, reflecting the scientific community’s focus on health-related chemicals in our food.

In 1981, Mermin published a now famous paper titled, "Bringing home the atomic world: Quantum mysteries for anybody" that Feynman called, "One of the most beautiful papers in physics that I know." Therein, he presented the "Mermin device" that illustrates the conundrum of quantum entanglement per the Bell spin states for the "general reader." He then challenged the "physicist reader" to explain the way the device works "in terms meaningful to a general reader struggling with the dilemma raised by the device." Herein, we show how "conservation per no preferred reference frame (NPRF)" answers that challenge. In short, the explicit conservation that obtains for Alice and Bob's Stern-Gerlach spin measurement outcomes in the same reference frame holds only on average in different reference frames, not on a trial-by-trial basis. This conservation is SO(3) invariant in the relevant symmetry plane in real space per the SU(2) invariance of its corresponding Bell spin state in Hilbert space. Since NPRF is also responsible for the postulates of special relativity, and therefore its counterintuitive aspects of time dilation and length contraction, we see that the symmetry group relating non-relativistic quantum mechanics and special relativity via their "mysteries" is the restricted Lorentz group., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. The low-cost ‘THz Torch’ wireless link technology is still in its infancy. Until very recently, inherent limitations with available hardware has resulted in a modest operational figure of merit performance (Range $$\times$$ × Bit Rate). However, a breakthrough was reported here by the authors, with the introduction of ‘Cognitive Demodulation’. This bypassed the thermal time constant constraints normally associated with both the thermal emitter and sensor; allowing step-change increases in both Range and Bit Rate with direct electronic modulation. This paper concentrates on advancements to the bit error rate (BER) performance. Here, separate techniques are introduced to the demodulation software that, when combined, result in enhanced Cognitive Demodulation. A factor of more than 100 improvement in BER was demonstrated within the laboratory and approximately a 60-fold improvement in a non-laboratory environment; both at the maximum Range and Bit Rate of 2 m and 125 bps, respectively, demonstrated recently. Moreover, demodulation speed is increased by almost a factor of 10,000; allowing for real-time demodulation while easing future computational hardware requirements. In addition to these software advancements, the paper demonstrates important improvements in hardware that has brought the technology out of the laboratory, with field trials being performed within an office corridor.

In this paper we present a new technique for a fiber-based temporal super resolving system allowing to improve the resolution of a temporal imaging system. The proposed super resolving concept is based upon translating the field of view multiplexing method that is used to increase resolution in spatial imaging systems from the spatial domain to the temporal domain. In this paper, an optical realization of our proposed system is presented, using optical fibers and electro-optic modulators. In addition, we show how one can apply this method using low-rate electronics for the required modulation. We also show simulation results that demonstrate the high resolution accepted in our method compares to the basic temporal imaging system. Experimental results which demonstrate resolution improvement by a factor of 1.5 based on the proposed method are presented together with an additional experiment that shows the ability to generate the desired modulation with low rate electronics.

The applications of machine learning/deep learning (ML/DL) methods in meteorology have developed considerably in recent years. Massive amounts of meteorological data are conducive to improving the training effect and model performance of ML/DL, but the establishment of training datasets is often time consuming, especially in the context of supervised learning. In this paper, to identify the two-dimensional (2D) structures of extratropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere, a quasi-supervised reidentification method for extratropical cyclones is proposed. This method first uses a traditional automatic cyclone identification method to construct a trainable labeled dataset and then reidentifies extratropical cyclones in a quasi-supervised fashion by using a (pre-trained) Mask region-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) model. In comparison, the new method increases the number of identified cyclones by 8.29%, effectively supplementing the traditional method. The newly recognized cyclones are mainly shallow or moderately deep subsynoptic-scale cyclones. However, a considerable portion of the new cyclones along the coastlines of the oceans are accompanied by strong winds. In addition, the Mask R-CNN model also shows good performance in identifying the horizontal structures of tropical cyclones. The quasi-supervised concept proposed in this paper may shed some light on accurate target identification in other research fields.

In the paper, the results of the first regular studies of ultra-small iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) toxicity in vitro were presented. The influence of PEG-coated NPs with 5 nm magnetite core on six different cell lines was examined. These were: human bronchial fibroblasts, human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293T), two glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cell lines as well as GBM cells isolated from a brain tumor of patient. Additionally, mouse macrophages were included in the study. The influence of IONPs in three different doses (1, 5 and 25 µg Fe/ml) on the viability, proliferation and migration activity of cells was assessed. Moreover, quantifying the intracellular ROS production, we determined the level of oxidative stress in cells exposed to IONPs. In the paper, for the first time, the effect of Fe in the form of IONPs was compared with the analogical data obtained for iron salts solutions containing the same amount of Fe, on the similar oxidation state. Our results clearly showed that the influence of iron on the living cells strongly depends not only on the used cell line, dose and exposure time but also on the form in which this element was administered to the culture. Notably, nanoparticles can stimulate the proliferation of some cell lines, including glioblastoma multiforme. Compared to Fe salts, they have a stronger negative impact on the viability of the cells tested. Ultra-small NPs, also, more often positively affect cell motility which seem to differ them from the NPs with larger core diameters.
