In this paper, a wideband polarization conversion metasurface is designed. Additionally, coding and chessboard metasurfaces are specifically tailored for radar cross-section reduction (RCS). Initially, a compact unit cell demonstrating exceptional polarization conversion performance is introduced, achieving a polarization conversion ratio (PCR) exceeding 90 % across frequencies ranging from 7.9 to 22.7 GHz. The PCR remains effective even when oblique incidence angles of up to 30 ∘ are utilized across this frequency band. Roger RT5880, with a thickness of 0.254 mm, serves as the substrate. An airgap is introduced between the substrate and the ground plane to enhance the polarization conversion bandwidth. This unit cell serves as the fundamental building block for subsequent metasurface configurations. To assess the scalability and effectiveness, a 36 × 36 unit array is assembled, confirming efficient polarization conversion capabilities extending to larger structures. Moreover, a 1-bit coding unit "0" and "1" are formed by the Pancharatnam-Berry phase based on the same-sized meta-atom with 90 ∘ orientations. The robustness and practicality of the design are demonstrated by creating 12 × 12 lattices and evaluating their RCS reduction potential under two distinct scenarios: a chessboard pattern and a coding-based scheme. Notably, its results indicate substantial RCS reduction across a broad frequency spectrum (7.9 to 22.7 GHz) for both configurations. This study demonstrates the wide-ranging applicability of metasurface design, making it a valuable contribution to the fields of microwave engineering, polarization control, and radar stealth technology. The aim of the paper is to carry out a comparative engineering-geological study of four different waste landfills using the evaluation criteria for the geological subsoil as a natural sealing barrier. The study evaluates 4 localities (Velké Pavlovice, Kvítkovice, Prakšice and Horní Suchá) using three variants (based on two standards) which approach the geological barrier requirements as a combination of impermeability requirements based on a filtration coefficient limit value. and the required geometry represented by investigation depths. The research was carried out in landfills in Moravia, in the east of the Czech Republic. The study's motivation is to point at the differences in engineering-geological investigations of waste landfills (as for the requirements for impermeable geological subsoil as a natural sealing barrier) when compared with other engineering structures (where the main goal is to evaluate load-bearing capacity and settlement). The purpose of the geological barrier is to prevent the spread of contamination, and the paper shows this can be approached differently, as shown in two different methodologies investigated herein. The first model (Model 1) assumes there is a 3-m-thick subsoil below the landfill's footing bottom, which manifests impermeability characterized by the filtration coefficient Kf ≤ 1.0 * 10–9 m/s, or a 30-m-thick subsoil of Kf ≤ 1.0 * 10–8 m/s. The second model (Model 2) assumes a 1-m thick, impermeable subsoil massif of Kf ≤ 1.0 * 10–9 m/s. We found that none of the landfills in the four selected localities had an impermeable layer in the required depth (a filtration coefficient Kf from 1.8 * 10–9 to 3.9 * 10–9 m/s), and thus did not comply with the limiting conditions. As a result, an anthropogenic technical barrier had to be installed. An important goal of the study from an environmental point of view was to assess the existence of a suitable geological barrier under the proposed landfills. The most important criterion from this point of view is permeability. An additional technical objective of the project was also the assessment of the possible creation of a technical anthropogenic isolation barrier. Disease risk prediction is a rising challenge in the medical domain. Researchers have widely used machine learning algorithms to solve this challenge. The k-nearest neighbour (KNN) algorithm is the most frequently used among the wide range of machine learning algorithms. This paper presents a study on different KNN variants (Classic one, Adaptive, Locally adaptive, k-means clustering, Fuzzy, Mutual, Ensemble, Hassanat and Generalised mean distance) and their performance comparison for disease prediction. This study analysed these variants in-depth through implementations and experimentations using eight machine learning benchmark datasets obtained from Kaggle, UCI Machine learning repository and OpenML. The datasets were related to different disease contexts. We considered the performance measures of accuracy, precision and recall for comparative analysis. The average accuracy values of these variants ranged from 64.22% to 83.62%. The Hassanaat KNN showed the highest average accuracy (83.62%), followed by the ensemble approach KNN (82.34%). A relative performance index is also proposed based on each performance measure to assess each variant and compare the results. This study identified Hassanat KNN as the best performing variant based on the accuracy-based version of this index, followed by the ensemble approach KNN. This study also provided a relative comparison among KNN variants based on precision and recall measures. Finally, this paper summarises which KNN variant is the most promising candidate to follow under the consideration of three performance measures (accuracy, precision and recall) for disease prediction. Quantum secure metrology protocols harness quantum effects to probe remote systems with enhanced precision and security. Traditional QSM protocols require multi-partite entanglement, which limits its near-term implementation due to technological constraints. This paper proposes a QSM scheme that employs Bell pairs to provide unconditional security while offering precision scaling beyond the standard quantum limit. We provide a detailed comparative performance analysis of our proposal under multiple attacks. We found that the employed controlled encoding strategy is far better than the parallel encoding of multi-partite entangled states with regard to the secrecy of the parameter. We also identify and characterize an intrinsic trade-off relationship between the maximum achievable precision and security under the limited availability of resources. Pairing (or blocking) is a design technique that is widely used in comparative microbiome studies to efficiently control for the effects of potential confounders (e.g., genetic, environmental, or behavioral factors). Some typical paired (block) designs for human microbiome studies are repeated measures designs that profile each subject's microbiome twice (or more than twice) (1) for pre and post treatments to see the effects of a treatment on microbiome, or (2) for different organs of the body (e.g., gut, mouth, skin) to see the disparity in microbiome between (or across) body sites. Researchers have developed a sheer number of web-based tools for user-friendly microbiome data processing and analytics, though there is no web-based tool currently available for such paired microbiome studies. In this paper, we thus introduce an integrative web-based tool, named MiPair, for design-based comparative analysis with paired microbiome data. MiPair is a user-friendly web cloud service that is built with step-by-step data processing and analytic procedures for comparative analysis between (or across) groups or between baseline and other groups. MiPair employs parametric and non-parametric tests for complete or incomplete block designs to perform comparative analyses with respect to microbial ecology (alpha- and beta-diversity) and taxonomy (e.g., phylum, class, order, family, genus, species). We demonstrate its usage through an example clinical trial on the effects of antibiotics on gut microbiome. Since the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, genome sequencing is essential to monitor viral mutations over time and by territory. This need for complete genetic information is further reinforced by the rapid spread of variants of concern. In this paper, we assess the ability of the hybridization technique, Capture-Seq, to detect the SARS-CoV-2 genome, either partially or in its integrity on patients samples. We studied 20 patient nasal swab samples broken down into five series of four samples of equivalent viral load from CT25 to CT36+. For this, we tested 3 multi-virus panel as well as 2 SARS-CoV-2 only panels. The panels were chosen based on their specificity, global or specific, as well as their technological difference in the composition of the probes: ssRNA, ssDNA and dsDNA. The multi-virus panels are able to capture high-abundance targets but fail to capture the lowest-abundance targets, with a high percentage of off-target reads corresponding to the abundance of the host sequences. Both SARS-CoV-2-only panels were very effective, with high percentage of reads corresponding to the target. Overall, capture followed by sequencing is very effective for the study of SARS-CoV-2 in low-abundance patient samples and is suitable for samples with CT values up to 35. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Earthquakes, forest fires, mudslides and other natural disasters occur frequently in recent years. They usually occur in the mountainous and dense forests, where local communication facilities do not exist or have been destroyed by the disasters. Adverse geographical environment poses a huge challenge to emergency communications and rescue. This paper presents comparative studies on multi-carrier transmission schemes in the mountainous and dense forest environment. The comprehensive communication performance for various multi-carrier waveform schemes, has been extensively analyzed by using the Stanford University Interim channel model. Simulation results show that the pruned discrete Fourier transform spread filter bank multi-carrier scheme exhibits generally the best performance in terms of transmission rate and distance for most operation modes. The semantic segmentation of omnidirectional urban driving images is a research topic that has increasingly attracted the attention of researchers, because the use of such images in driving scenes is highly relevant. However, the case of motorized two-wheelers has not been treated yet. Since the dynamics of these vehicles are very different from those of cars, we focus our study on images acquired using a motorcycle. This paper provides a thorough comparative study to show how different deep learning approaches handle omnidirectional images with different representations, including perspective, equirectangular, spherical, and fisheye, and presents the best solution to segment road scene omnidirectional images. We use in this study real perspective images, and synthetic perspective, fisheye and equirectangular images, simulated fisheye images, as well as a test set of real fisheye images. By analyzing both qualitative and quantitative results, the conclusions of this study are multiple, as it helps understand how the networks learn to deal with omnidirectional distortions. Our main findings are that models with planar convolutions give better results than the ones with spherical convolutions, and that models trained on omnidirectional representations transfer better to standard perspective images than vice versa. The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the defining events of our time. National Governments responded to the global crisis by implementing mobility restrictions to slow down the spread of the virus. To assess the impact of those policies on human mobility, we perform a massive comparative analysis on geolocalized data from 13 M Facebook users in France, Italy, and the UK. We find that lockdown generally affects national mobility efficiency and smallworldness—i.e., a substantial reduction of long-range connections in favor of local paths. The impact, however, differs among nations according to their mobility infrastructure. We find that mobility is more concentrated in France and UK and more distributed in Italy. In this paper we provide a framework to quantify the substantial impact of the mobility restrictions. We introduce a percolation model mimicking mobility network disruption and find that node persistence in the percolation process is significantly correlated with the economic and demographic characteristics of countries: areas showing higher resilience to mobility disruptions are those where Value Added per Capita and Population Density are high. Our methods and findings provide important insights to enhance preparedness for global critical events and to incorporate resilience as a relevant dimension to estimate the socio-economic consequences of mobility restriction policies. This paper examines how a move from traditional post-harvest operations of smallholder rice farms in the Ayeyarwaddy delta, Myanmar, to improved post-harvest operations affected income, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE). Harvest and post-harvest losses were investigated in a field experiment with 5 replications per scenario. A comparative analysis on energy efficiency and cost-benefits was conducted for different practices of rice production from cultivation to milling. GHGE of different practices were also considered using a life-cycle assessment approach. The study demonstrates that the mechanized practices increased the net income by 30–50% compared with traditional practices. Despite using additional energy for machine manufacturing and fuel consumption, the mechanized practices significantly reduced postharvest losses and did not increase the total life-cycle enegy and GHGE. Combine harvesting helped to significantly reduce harvesting loss in a range of 3 to 7% (by weight of the rice product). Improved post-harvest management practices with a flatbed dryer and hermetic storage reduced the discoloration of rice grains by 3 to 4% and increased head-rice recovery by 20 to 30% (by weight of rice product). The research findings provide empirical evidence that improved post-harvest management of rice in the Ayeyarwaddy delta, compared to traditional post-harvest operations by smallholder farmers, reduce post-harvest losses and improve the quality of rice. In the field of computational bioinformatics, identifying a set of genes which are responsible for a particular cellular mechanism, is very much essential for tasks such as medical diagnosis or disease gene identification. Accurately grouping (clustering) the genes is one of the important tasks in understanding the functionalities of the disease genes. In this regard, ensemble clustering becomes a promising approach to combine different clustering solutions to generate almost accurate gene partitioning. Recently, researchers have used generative model as a smart ensemble method to produce the right consensus solution. In the current paper, we develop a protein-protein interaction-based generative model that can efficiently perform a gene clustering. Utilizing protein interaction information as the generative model's latent variable enables enhance the generative model's efficiency in inferring final probabilistic labels. The proposed generative model utilizes different weak supervision sources rather utilizing any ground truth information. For weak supervision sources, we use a multi-objective optimization based clustering technique together with the world's largest gene ontology based knowledge-base named Gene Ontology Consortium(GOC). These weakly supervised labels are supplied to a generative model that eventually assigns all genes to probabilistic labels. The comparative study with respect to silhouette score, Biological Homogeneity Index (BHI) and Biological Stability Index (BSI) proves that the proposed generative model outperforms than other state-of-the-art techniques. Simarouba, a neotropical genus in the family Simaroubaceae, currently lacks comprehensive genomic data in existing databases. This study aims to fill this gap by providing genomic resources for three Simarouba species, S. amara, S. versicolor, and S. glauca. It also aims to perform comparative molecular evolutionary analyses in relation to other species within the order Sapindales. The analysis of these three Simarouba species revealed the presence of the typical quadripartite structure expected in plastomes. However, some pseudogenization events were identified in the psbC, infA, rpl22, and ycf1 genes. In particular, the CDS of the psbC gene in S. amara was reduced from 1422 bp to 584 bp due to a premature stop codon. Nucleotide diversity data pointed to gene and intergenic regions as promising candidates for species and family discrimination within the group, specifically matK, ycf1, ndhF, rpl32, petA-psbJ, and trnS-trnG. Selection signal analyses showed strong evidence for positive selection on the rpl23 gene. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that S. versicolor and S. glauca have a closer phylogenetic relationship than S. amara. We provide chloroplast genomes of three Simaruba species and use them to elucidate plastome evolution, highlight the presence of pseudogenization, and identify potential DNA barcode regions. Prediction of water-conducting fractured zone (WCFZ) of mine overburden is the premise for reducing or eliminating water inrush hazards in undersea mining. To obtain a more robust and precise prediction of WCFZ in undersea mining, a WCFZ prediction dataset with 122 cases of fractured zones was constructed. Five machine learning algorithms (linear regression, XGBRegressor, RandomForestRegressor, LineareSVR, and KNeighborsRegressor) were employed to develop five corresponding predictive models, taking multiple factors into account.The optimal parameters for each model are obtained through ten-fold cross-validation (10CV). The model's predictive performance was validated and assessed using two metrics, namely the coefficient of determination (R2) and mean squared error (MSE). A comparison was made with the regression performance of commonly used empirical formulas. The results indicate that the constructed model outperforms reliance solely on theoretical criteria, showing a high R2 value of up to 0.925 and a low MSE value of 3.61. The proposed model was validated in a recently established mining area on Sanshan Island, China. It shows low absolute and relative errors of 0.71 m and 2.01%, respectively, between the predicted value from the model and observation result from the field, demonstrating a high level of consistency with on-site conditions. In this research, the star gold structure with beta graphene is thoroughly examined. We mainly focus on computing degree-based topological indices, which provide information about the network's connectivity and complexity as well as structural features. In addition, we compute an entropy measure to represent the uncertainty, information richness, and degree of unpredictability in the network. Furthermore, this study explores the relationships between topological descriptors and entropy using regression models that are logarithmic, linear, and quadratic. By merging these regression models, we uncover hidden patterns and understand the underlying ideas governing the network's behaviour. Our findings shed light on the connection between topological indices and entropy. This work compares the electroanalytical performance of two electroanalytical systems based on (1) the glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and (2) the electrified liquid–liquid interface (eLLI), for the detection of fluoroquinolone antibiotic–danofloxacin (DANO). Our aim was to define the optimal conditions to detect the chosen analyte with two employed systems, extract a number of electroanalytical parameters, study the mechanism of the charge transfer reactions (oxidation at GCE and ion transfer across the eLLI), and to provide physicochemical constants for DANO. Detection of the chosen analyte was also performed in the spiked milk samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that directly compares the electroanalytical parameters obtained with solid electrode (in this case GCE) and eLLI. We have found that for DANO the latter provides better electroanalytical parameters (lower LOD and LOQ) as well as good selectivity when the milk was analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Veronica anagallis-aquatica L. and Veronica undulata Wall. are widely used ethnomedicinal plants in China. The two species have different clinical efficacies, while their extremely similar morphology and unclear interspecific relationship make it difficult to accurately identify them, leading to increased instances of mixed usage. This article reports on the complete chloroplast genomes sequence of these two species and their related Veronica species to conduct a comparative genomics analysis and phylogenetic construction. The results showed that the chloroplast (cp) genomes of Veronica exhibited typical circular quadripartite structures, with total lengths of 149,386 to 152,319 base pairs (bp), and GC content of 37.9 to 38.1%, and the number of genes was between 129–134. The total number of simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in V. anagallis-aquatica and V. undulata is 37 and 36, while V. arvensis had the highest total number of 56, predominantly characterized by A/T single bases. The vast majority of long repeat sequence types are forward repeats and palindromic repeats. Selective Ka/Ks values showed that three genes were under positive selection. Sequence differences often occur in the non-coding regions of the large single-copy region (LSC) and small single-copy region (SSC), with the lowest sequence variation in the inverted repeat regions (IR). Seven highly variable regions (trnT-GGU-psbD, rps8-rpl16, trnQ-UUG, trnN-GUU-ndhF, petL, ycf3, and ycf1) were detected, which may be potential molecular markers for identifying V. anagallis-aquatica and V. undulata. The phylogenetic tree indicates that there is a close genetic relationship between the genera Veronica and Neopicrorhiza, and V. anagallis-aquatica and V. undulata are sister groups. The molecular clock analysis results indicate that the divergence time of Veronica may occur at ∼ 9.09 Ma, and the divergence time of these two species occurs at ∼ 0.48 Ma. It is speculated that climate change may be the cause of Veronica species diversity and promote the radiation of the genus. The chloroplast genome data of nine Veronica specie provides important insights into the characteristics and evolution of the chloroplast genome of this genus, as well as the phylogenetic relationships of the genus Veronica. Myelodysplastic syndrome is primarily characterized by dysplasia in the bone marrow (BM), presenting a challenge in consistent morphology interpretation. Accurate diagnosis through traditional slide-based analysis is difficult, necessitating a standardized objective technique. Over the past two decades, imaging flow cytometry (IFC) has proven effective in combining image-based morphometric analyses with high-parameter phenotyping. We have previously demonstrated the effectiveness of combining IFC with a feature-based machine learning algorithm to accurately identify and quantify rare binucleated erythroblasts (BNEs) in dyserythropoietic BM cells. However, a feature-based workflow poses challenges requiring software-specific expertise. Here we employ a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm for BNE identification and differentiation from doublets and cells with irregular nuclear morphology in IFC data. We demonstrate that this simplified AI workflow, coupled with a powerful CNN algorithm, achieves comparable BNE quantification accuracy to manual and feature-based analysis with substantial time savings, eliminating workflow complexity. Seborrheic keratosis (SK) is a common skin disease in the elderly. However, in cases where SK presenting as multiple skin-colored or clustered lesions can be easily misdiagnosed as verruca plana (VP), especially in the young population. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence of SK and VP in the lesions that appear clinically similar to VP according to age. We examined the pathology slides of the skin tissue and photographs of patients who were clinically suspected to have VP. A total of 503 patients were included in the study, out of which 174 patients were finally diagnosed with SK (34.6%) and 132 with VP (26.2%). The mean ages of the SK- and VP-diagnosed group were 39.3 and 35.4 years, respectively. SK had a higher prevalence among individuals older than 30 years, and relative frequency of SK should not be ignored in patients with a grouped distribution in their 20 s and 30 s. Therefore, our study suggests that multiple verrucous skin-colored to brownish plaques are also commonly diagnosed as SK in young people as well as VP, and the prevalence of SK and VP may not always depend solely on chronological aging, and the prevalence of SK among young people may be higher than commonly believed stereotypes suggest. The integration of microgrids into the existing power system framework enhances the reliability and efficiency of the utility grid. This manuscript presents an innovative mathematical paradigm designed for the optimization of both the structural and operational aspects of a grid-connected microgrid, leveraging the principles of Demand-Side Management (DSM). The focus of this work lies in a comprehensive exploration of the implications brought about by the Renewable Generation-Based Dynamic Pricing Demand Response (RGDP-DR) mechanism, particularly in terms of its influence on the optimal microgrid configuration, considering perspectives from end-users and the utility entity. This inquiry is rooted in a holistic assessment that encompasses technical and economic performance benchmarks. The RGDP-induced DR framework adeptly addresses the needs of the consumer base, showcasing notable efficiency and economic feasibility. To address the intricate nonlinear optimization challenge at hand, we employ an evolutionary algorithm named the "Dandelion Algorithm" (DA). A rigorous comparative study is conducted to evaluate the efficacy of four optimization techniques, affirming the supremacy of the proposed DA. Within this discourse, the complexity of microgrid sizing is cast as a dual-objective optimization task. The twin objectives involve minimizing the aggregate annual outlay and reducing emissions. The results of this endeavor unequivocally endorse the superiority of the DA over its counterparts. The recently proposed method for on-site radiation dosimetry by a combination of radiochromic film and portable colorimeter was tested for six combinations of two popular Gafchromic films (EBT3 and EBT-XD) and three commercially available portable colorimeters (nix pro2, nix spectro2 and Spectro1 Pro; abbreviated to "NixP", "NixS" and "SpoP", respectively). EBT3 and EBT-XD were irradiated with X-rays (160 kV, 6.3 mA) up to 40 Gy and 80 Gy, respectively, and the radiation-induced color levels of RGB and CMYK components were measured with the three colorimeters. Angle dependence was examined by reading at 15° intervals. As a result, it was judged that all combinations would work effectively under certain irradiation conditions. NixP and NixS were applicable to a wider dose range for both films, while SpoP fit a lower dose range. On the other hand, SpoP showed an advantageous feature of no angular dependence in reading films, while NixP and NixS showed significant angle-dependent changes. These differences are considered to be attributable to the different geometries of LED light emission, which came from all directions (360°) in SpoP, 4 directions in NixP, and 8 directions in NixS. Increased sequencing depth can improve the detection rate of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for chromosome aneuploidies and copy number variations (CNVs). However, due to the technical limitations of NIPT, false-positives and false-negatives are inevitable. False-positives for aneuploidy and CNVs have been widely reported, but few missed cases have been reported. In this study, we report 3 patients missed by NIPT, which were still missed after increasing the sequencing depth. To verify the detection efficiency of the platform, the results of NIPT in 32,796 patients treated in Yulin Women and Children Health Care Hospital from 2020 to 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Data on false-negative cases found by postnatal follow-up or amniocentesis were collected, and the sequencing data, pregnancy examination data, and postnatal follow-up results of these missed patients were summarized. Five patients missed by NIPT were found, and they were missed again by retesting or increasing the sequencing depth. Except for hypospadias found in 1 patient, ultrasonography of the other 4 patients showed no obvious abnormalities during the whole pregnancy. Our results suggest that pregnant women should be fully informed of the benefits and limitations of NIPT before undergoing the examination to avoid unnecessary medical disputes. Along with the adoption of hybrid teaching and learning modes, the integration of ICT into language instruction in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic has afforded teachers and students increased opportunities to engage with technology. This quantitative study uses a self-report questionnaire to examine language learners' attitudes and behavior tied to the role of ICT in learning before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Firstly, the study confirms the questionnaire's validity for assessing ICT attitudes and behavior in the Hungarian educational context. Additionally, the measurement invariance and differential item functioning of the assessment tool pre- and post-COVID-19 show that attitudes and the frequency of ICT use remain consistent at both the construct and item levels. Overall, the results demonstrate significant variations between the two student groups in attitudes and behavior tied to the use of ICT tools in language learning. The findings show that the post-COVID-19 group exhibits higher attitudes, and an increased frequency of technology use is observed compared to the pre-COVID-19 period. Furthermore, the study indicates that attitudes before COVID-19 do not strongly influence habitual technology use for language learning, while the opposite is true for the post-COVID-19 period. This study focuses on the issue of lots resubmission in inspection processes, which often arises when the initial inspection of a lot is suspected, marked as held, or not accepted. To address this problem, a novel variables sampling plan based on the coefficient of variation is proposed. The objective is to determine the sampling plan parameters that minimize the average sample number while satisfying the two-points of operating characteristic curve. Practical considerations are taken into account by providing tabulated values for the inspection sample size and acceptance criteria of the proposed plan. These tables incorporate various combinations of quality levels, considering commonly used producer's risk and consumer's risk. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between the proposed plan and a single sampling plan is conducted to highlight the advantages of the new approach. The orchid family has 200,000 species and 700 genera, and it is found worldwide in the tropics and subtropics. In China, there are 1247 species and subspecies of orchids belonging to the Orchidaceae family. Orchidaceae is one of the most diverse plant families in the world, known for their lush look, remarkable ecological tolerance, and capability for reproduction. It has significant decorative and therapeutic value. In terms of evolution, the orchid family is one of the more complicated groups, but up until now, little has been known about its affinities. This study examined the properties of 19 chloroplast (cp) genomes, of which 11 had previously been published and nine had only recently been revealed. Following that, topics such as analysis of selection pressure, codon usage, amino acid frequencies, repeated sequences, and reverse repeat contraction and expansion are covered. The Orchidaceae share similar cp chromosomal characteristics, and we have conducted a preliminary analysis of their evolutionary connections. The cp genome of this family has a typical tepartite structure and a high degree of consistency across species. Platanthera urceolata with more tandem repeats of the cp genome. Similar cp chromosomal traits can be seen in the orchidaceae. The dog is a so far unique species to study interspecific communication and a promising evolutionary model for preverbal human communication. Recently cats were reported to show some similar skills to dogs. Here we directly compared both the testability and the success of companion dogs and cats in relying on human distal pointing gestures. Due to differences in their domestication, social and ecological background, and developmental processes, we expected better performance from dogs compared to cats. Using an object-choice task, cats made considerably fewer choices than dogs in the laboratory environment, and their tendency to make a choice declined during trials. They were slightly more testable at home, where their willingness to choose did not decrease over time. Dogs made more successful choices than cats, both at the group and individual level, irrespective of the type of the pointing gesture. Older cats were more successful. Despite the two species' rather similar role nowadays as human companions, our results support previous findings suggesting that, compared to the dog, the cat is a less ideal model to study some human communicative abilities in a laboratory environment. Remimazolam, an ultrashort-acting benzodiazepine, allows for rapid and reliable arousal. Rapid awakening using remimazolam may be beneficial in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), as it allows rapid detection of neurologic deficits. The purpose of this study was to compare arousal time and outcomes between monitored anesthesia care (MAC) with remimazolam and remifentanil and conventional MAC with dexmedetomidine, propofol, and remifentanil. This study was a single center retrospective study. All TAVR cases performed under MAC (MAC-TAVR) at our institution between 2019 and 2021 were included. Patients were classified by anesthesia method into remimazolam and dexmedetomidine groups. Among 258 MAC-TAVR patients, 253 were enrolled. After propensity score matching, 76 patients were assigned to each group. The time from end of drug-administration to arousal [20.0 (16.0, 24.0) min vs. 38.5 (30.0, 56.3) min, p < 0.0001] and the time from attempted-arousal to arousal [1.0 (1.0, 1.0) min vs. 12.5 (3.0, 26.8) min, p < 0.0001] were significantly shorter in the remimazolam group. The Heuchera genus, a member of the Saxifragaceae family, encompasses a wide array of varieties and hybrids, serving both traditional medicinal and ornamental purposes. However, a significant knowledge gap persists in achieving efficient mass propagation of diverse Heuchera cultivars creating a substantial market void. To address this, our study focuses on expedited seedling regeneration by investigating leaf cutting and tissue culture techniques to offer novel insights to cultivators. Herein, we successfully rooted thirteen distinct cultivars from the Heuchera and Heucherella (Heuchera × Tiarella) genera through cutting. Moreover, in vitro culture experiments led to the successful induction of calli and shoots from petiole samples. Notably, variations in measured parameters were observed across cultivars in both cutting and tissue culture methodologies. When petiole explants were exposed to cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/L along with auxin α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at 0.5 mg/L, shoots were produced either directly or indirectly during the primary culture. Exposure to darkness and the application of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) did not promote shoot formation but were beneficial for callus stimulation. Interestingly, a negative correlation was observed between the ease of initiating cutting recovery and inducting tissue culture regeneration, suggesting that cultivars that easily regenerate through cutting might encounter difficulties during induction by tissue culture. In light of these findings, we devised a streamlined and effective protocol for rapid Heuchera propagation. The genus Cerastium includes about 200 species that are mostly found in the temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere. Here we report the complete chloroplast genomes of Cerastium alpinum, C. arcticum and C. nigrescens. The length of cp genomes ranged from 147,940 to 148,722 bp. Their quadripartite circular structure had the same gene organization and content, containing 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. Repeat sequences varied from 16 to 23 per species, with palindromic repeats being the most frequent. The number of identified SSRs ranged from 20 to 23 per species and they were mainly composed of mononucleotide repeats containing A/T units. Based on Ka/Ks ratio values, most genes were subjected to purifying selection. The newly sequenced chloroplast genomes were characterized by a high frequency of RNA editing, including both C to U and U to C conversion. The phylogenetic relationships within the genus Cerastium and family Caryophyllaceae were reconstructed based on the sequences of 71 protein-coding genes. The topology of the phylogenetic tree was consistent with the systematic position of the studied species. The emergence of viruses and their variants has made virus taxonomy more important than ever before in controlling the spread of diseases. The creation of efficient treatments and cures that target particular virus properties can be aided by understanding virus taxonomy. Alignment-based methods are commonly used for this task, but are computationally expensive and time-consuming, especially when dealing with large datasets or when detecting new virus variants is time sensitive. An alternative approach, the encoded method, has been developed that does not require prior sequence alignment and provides faster results. However, each encoded method has its own claimed accuracy. Therefore, careful evaluation and comparison of the performance of different encoded methods are essential to identify the most accurate and reliable approach for virus taxonomy classification. This study aims to address this issue by providing a comprehensive and comparative analysis of the potential of encoded methods for virus classification and phylogenetics. We compared the vectors generated for each encoded method using distance metrics to determine their similarity to alignment-based methods. The results and their validation show that K-merNV followed by CgrDft encoded methods, perform similarly to state-of-the-art multi-sequence alignment methods. This is the first study to incorporate and compare encoded methods that will facilitate future research in making more informed decisions regarding selection of a suitable method for virus taxonomy. The present study investigates the free vibration behavior of rotating beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) with a tapered geometry. The material properties of the beams are characterized by an exponential distribution model. The stiffness and mass matrices of the beams are derived using the principle of virtual energy. These matrices are then evaluated using three different beam theories: Bernoulli–Euler (BE) or Classical Beam Theory (CBT), Timoshenko (T) or First-order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT), and Reddy (R) or Third-order Shear Deformation Theory (TSDT). Additionally, the study incorporates uncertainties in the model parameters, including rotational velocity, beam material properties, and material distribution. The mean-centered second-order perturbation method is employed to account for the randomness of these properties. To ensure the robustness and accuracy of the probabilistic framework, numerical examples are presented, and the results are compared with those obtained through the Monte Carlo simulation technique. The investigation explores the impact of critical parameters, including material distribution, taper ratios, aspect ratio, hub radius, and rotational speed, on the natural frequencies of the beams is explored within the scope of this investigation. The outcomes are compared not only with previously published research findings but also with the results of 3-Dimensional Finite Element (3D-FE) simulations conducted using ANSYS to validate the model's effectiveness. The comparisons demonstrate a strong agreement across all evaluations. Specifically, it is observed that for thick beams, the results obtained from FSDT and TSDT exhibit a greater agreement with the 3D-FE simulations compared to CBT. It is shown that the coefficient of variation (C.O.V.) of first mode eigenvalue of TSDT, FSDT and CBT are approximately identical for random rotational velocity and discernible deviations are noted in CBT compared to FSDT and TSDT in the case of random material properties. The findings suggest that TSDT outperforms FSDT by eliminating the need for a shear correction coefficient, thereby establishing its superiority in accurately predicting the natural frequencies of rotating, tapered beams composed of FGMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chloroplast (cp) genome is an adequate genomic resource to investigate evolutionary relationships among plant species and it carries marker genes available for species identification. The Cicer reticulatum is one of perennial species as the progenitor of cultivated chickpeas. Although a large part of the land plants has a quadruple chloroplast genome organization, the cp genome of C. reticulatum consists of one LSC (Large Single Copy Region), one SSC (Small Single Copy Region), and one IR (Inverted Repeat) region, which indicates that it has an untypical and unique structure. This type of chloroplast genome belongs to the IR-lacking clade. Chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) was extracted from fresh leaves using a high salt-based protocol and sequencing was performed using DNA Nanoball Sequencing technology. The comparative analysis employed between the species to examine genomic differences and gene homology. The study also included codon usage frequency analysis, hotspot divergence analysis, and phylogenetic analysis using various bioinformatics tools. The cp genome of C. reticulatum was found 125,794 bp in length, with an overall GC content of 33.9%. With a total of 79 protein-coding genes, 34 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Comparative genomic analysis revealed 99.93% similarity between C. reticulatum and C. arietinum. Phylogenetic analysis further indicated that the closest evolutionary relative to C. arietinum was C. reticulatum, whereas the previously sequenced wild Cicer species displayed slight distinctions across their entire coding regions. Several genomic regions, such as clpP and ycf1, were found to exhibit high nucleotide diversity, suggesting their potential utility as markers for investigating the evolutionary relationships within the Cicer genus. Genus Filipendula (Rosoideae, Rosaceae) comprises about 15 species and mainly distributed in Northern Hemisphere. The phylogenetic relationships based on the nrITS marker are not consistent with the traditional taxonomic systems of the genus. Here, we first analysed the complete chloroplast (cp) genomes of seven Filipendula species (including two varieties of F. palmate). Our results indicated that the cp genomes of Filipendula species had few changes in size, ranging from 154,205 bp to 154,633 bp and the average of 36.63% GC content. A total of 126 annotated genes had the identical order and orientation, implying that the cp genome structure of Filipendula species was rather conserved. However, the cp genomes of Filipendula species exhibited structural differences, including gene loss, transposition and inversion when compared to those of other genera of Rosoideae. Moreover, SSRs with the different number were observed in the cp genome of each Filipendula species and sequence divergence mainly occurred in noncoding regions, in which four mutational hotspots were identified. In contrast, only two positive selection genes (matK and rps8) were found. Phylogenetic and molecular-dating analysis indicated that Filipendula species were divergent from other genera of Rosoideae at about 82.88 Ma. Additionally, Filipendula species from East Asia were split at about 9.64 Ma into two major clades. These results provide a basis for further studying the infrageneric classification of Filipendula. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reached over 1.3 million in Ontario, Canada by June 4, 2022. The continued spread of the virus underlying COVID-19 has been spurred by the emergence of variants since the initial outbreak in December, 2019. Much attention has thus been devoted to tracking and modelling the transmission of COVID-19. Compartmental models are commonly used to mimic epidemic transmission mechanisms and are easy to understand. Their performance in real-world settings, however, needs to be more thoroughly assessed. In this comparative study, we examine five compartmental models—four existing ones and an extended model that we propose—and analyze their ability to describe COVID-19 transmission in Ontario from January 2022 to June 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a catastrophic event that has seriously endangered the world's population. Governments have largely been unprepared to deal with such an unprecedented calamity, partially due to the lack of sufficient or adequately fine-grained data necessary for forecasting the pandemic's evolution. To fill this gap, researchers worldwide have been collecting data about different aspects of COVID-19's evolution and government responses to them so as to provide the foundation for informative models and tools that can be used to mitigate the current pandemic and possibly prevent future ones. Indeed, since the early stages of the pandemic, a number of research initiatives were launched with this goal, including the PERISCOPE (Pan-European Response to the ImpactS of COVID-19 and future Pandemics and Epidemics) Project, funded by the European Commission. PERISCOPE aims to investigate the broad socio-economic and behavioral impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal of making Europe more resilient and prepared for future large-scale risks. The purpose of this study, carried out as part of the PERISCOPE project, is to provide a first European-level analysis of the effect of government policies on the spread of the virus. To do so, we assessed the relationship between a novel index, the Policy Intensity Index, and four epidemiological variables collected by the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and then applied a comprehensive Pan-European population model based on Multilevel Vector Autoregression. This model aims at identifying effects that are common to some European countries while treating country-specific policies as covariates, explaining the different evolution of the pandemic in nine selected countries due to data availability: Spain, France, Netherlands, Latvia, Slovenia, Greece, Ireland, Cyprus, Estonia. Results show that specific policies' effectiveness tend to vary consistently within the different countries, although in general policies related to Health Monitoring and Health Resources are the most effective for all countries. Exercise has profound but variable effects on the immune system. However, only limited information exists about the changes of exercise-induced gene expression in whole immune cells. The aim of this study is to unravel the potential molecular changes of genes which are related to immunity after exercise. The raw expression data and corresponding clinical of GSE18966 were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus database. The differentially expressed genes between control group and treat groups were performed by in-house developed perl scripts. A total of 83 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (|log2 FC|> 1, FDR < 0.05) were identified between control and treat group 1 (0 h after exercise), 128 DEGs (|log2 FC|> 1, FDR < 0.05) between control and treat group 2 (4 h after exercise), and there was no significant difference between control and treat group 3 (20 h after exercise). Next, we identified 51 overlapping genes between treat group 1 (0 h after exercise) and treat group 2 (4 h after exercise) using Venn analysis. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed by Cytoscape 3.7.2, and nine hub genes (S100A12, FCGR3B, FPR1, VNN2, AQP9, MMP9, OSM, NCF4, HP) were identified. Finally, 9 hub genes were identified as the potential biomarkers of exercise using validation set (GSE83578) verification analysis. High-story residential structures and off-site prefabrication have been dominant choices in the construction industry. There is a substantial quantity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by the construction industry. In fact, the construction industry is responsible for 30 percent of all GHG emissions. In this study, we analyse the differences between the conventional technique of building and the off-site prefabricating construction method. First, we evaluate the emissions emitted from key processes during the off-site prefabricating construction. In addition, we analyse the qualitative and quantitative differences between two prefabrication structural systems, namely concrete and steel, which are the two most common structural systems utilised in residential construction projects in China. Acne is a common inflammatory condition that mostly involves the face, chest and back. A number of different modalities had been employed for treating scars of which laser remains to be a pivotal choice. We aimed to compare the efficacy of topical timolol maleate 0.5% after fractional CO2 (AFCO2) laser versus fractional CO2 Laser alone for treatment of atrophic acne scars. A split-face comparative clinical experiment on 30 cases of atrophic post-acne scars that were treated on one side with ablative fractional CO2 laser followed by timolol application while with only ablative fractional CO2 laser on the other side. Following treatment, both sides demonstrated significant improvement with the laser + timolol treated side showing better improvement; yet not significantly higher than the laser only treated side. In conclusion, both topical timolol maleate 0.5% after fractional CO2 laser and fractional CO2 laser may achieve comparable significant improvement. The good safety profile, easy accessibility, low cost, and non-invasive nature merits the use of timolol in acne scars pending verification by larger sample reproduced and controlled trials. Polygonatum Miller belongs to the tribe Polygonateae of Asparagaceae. The horizontal creeping fleshy roots of several species in this genus serve as traditional Chinese medicine. Previous studies have mainly reported the size and gene contents of the plastomes, with little information on the comparative analysis of the plastid genomes of this genus. Additionally, there are still some species whose chloroplast genome information has not been reported. In this study, the complete plastomes of six Polygonatum were sequenced and assembled, among them, the chloroplast genome of P. campanulatum was reported for the first time. Comparative and phylogenetic analyses were then conducted with the published plastomes of three related species. Results indicated that the whole plastome length of the Polygonatum species ranged from 154,564 bp (P. multiflorum) to 156,028 bp (P. stenophyllum) having a quadripartite structure of LSC and SSC separated by two IR regions. A total of 113 unique genes were detected in each of the species. Comparative analysis revealed that gene content and total GC content in these species were highly identical. No significant contraction or expansion was observed in the IR boundaries among all the species except P. sibiricum1, in which the rps19 gene was pseudogenized owing to incomplete duplication. Abundant long dispersed repeats and SSRs were detected in each genome. There were five remarkably variable regions and 14 positively selected genes were identified among Polygonatum and Heteropolygonatum. Phylogenetic results based on chloroplast genome strongly supported the placement of P. campanulatum with alternate leaves in sect. Verticillata, a group characterized by whorled leaves. Moreover, P. verticillatum and P. cyrtonema were displayed as paraphyletic. This study revealed that the characters of plastomes in Polygonatum and Heteropolygonatum maintained a high degree of similarity. Five highly variable regions were found to be potential specific DNA barcodes in Polygonatum. Phylogenetic results suggested that leaf arrangement was not suitable as a basis for delimitation of subgeneric groups in Polygonatum and the definitions of P. cyrtonema and P. verticillatum require further study. Comet assay is a widely used method, especially in the field of genotoxicity, to quantify and measure DNA damage visually at the level of individual cells with high sensitivity and efficiency. Generally, computer programs are used to analyze comet assay output images following two main steps. First, each comet region must be located and segmented, and next, it is scored using common metrics (e.g., tail length and tail moment). Currently, most studies on comet assay image analysis have adopted hand-crafted features rather than the recent and effective deep learning (DL) methods. In this paper, however, we propose a DL-based baseline method, called DeepComet, for comet segmentation. Furthermore, we created a trainable and testable comet assay image dataset that contains 1037 comet assay images with 8271 manually annotated comet objects. From the comet segmentation test results with the proposed dataset, the DeepComet achieves high average precision (AP), which is an essential metric in image segmentation and detection tasks. A comparative analysis was performed between the DeepComet and the state-of-the-arts automatic comet segmentation programs on the dataset. Human errors in criminal investigations have previously led to devastating miscarriages of justice. For example, flaws in forensic identification based on physical or photographic evidence are notoriously unreliable. The criminal justice system has, therefore, started to turn to artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the reliability and fairness of forensic identification. So as not to repeat history, it is critical to evaluate the appropriateness of deploying these new AI forensic tools. We assess the feasibility of measuring basic physical attributes in a photo using a state-of-the-art AI system, and compare performance with human experts and non-experts. Neurofilament light chains (NfL) are neuron-specific cytoskeletal proteins whose plasmatic concentrations have been explored as a clinically useful marker in several types of dementia. Plasma concentrations of NfL are extremely low, and just two assays are commercially available for their study: one based on the SiMoA technology and one based on Ella. We thus studied plasma levels of NfL with both platforms to check the correlation between them and to assess their potential in the diagnosis of neurodegeneration. Plasma NfL levels were measured on 50 subjects: 18 healthy controls, 20 Alzheimer's disease, and 12 frontotemporal dementia patients. Ella returned plasmatic NfL levels significantly higher than SiMoA, however the results were strongly correlated (r = 0.94), and a proportional coefficient of 0.58 between the two assays was calculated. Both assays detected higher plasma NfL levels in patients with dementia than in the control group (p < 0.0001) and allowed their discrimination with excellent diagnostic performance (AUC > 0.95). No difference was found between Alzheimer's and Frontotemporal dementia either using SiMoA or Ella. In conclusion, both the analytical platforms resulted effective in analysing plasma levels of NfL. Trees of Moringa oleifera are the most widely exploited species of Moringa and proteins extracted from its seeds have been identified as the most efficient natural coagulant for water purification. Largely for climatic reasons, other Moringa species are more accessible in some regions and this paper presents a comparative study of the adsorption to different materials of the proteins extracted from seeds of Moringa peregrina and Moringa oleifera to explore their use as flocculating agents in regions where each is more readily accessible. Results showed that Moringa peregrina seed proteins had higher adsorption to alumina compared to silica, in contrast to opposite behavior for Moringa oleifera. Both species provide cationic proteins that can act as effective coagulants for the various impurities with different surface potential. Despite the considerable similarity of the amino acid composition, the seed proteins have significantly different adsorption and this presents the opportunity to improve processes by choosing the optimal species or combination of species depending on the type of impurity or possible development of separation processes. Plasmopara viticola, an obligate biotrophic oomycete, is the causal agent of one of the most harmful grapevine diseases, downy mildew. Within this pathosystem, much information is gathered on the host, as characterization of pathogenicity and infection strategy of a biotrophic pathogen is quite challenging. Molecular insights into P. viticola development and pathogenicity are just beginning to be uncovered, mainly by transcriptomic studies. Plasmopara viticola proteome and secretome were only predicted based on transcriptome data. In this study, we have identified the in-planta proteome of P. viticola during infection of a susceptible ('Trincadeira') and a Rpv3-mediated resistance ('Regent') grapevine cultivar. Four hundred and twenty P. viticola proteins were identified on a label-free mass spectrometry-based approach of the apoplastic fluid of grapevine leaves. Overall, our study suggests that, in the compatible interaction, P. viticola manipulates salicylic-acid pathway and isoprenoid biosynthesis to enhance plant colonization. Furthermore, during the incompatible interaction, development-associated proteins increased while oxidoreductases protect P. viticola from ROS-associated plant defence mechanism. Up to our knowledge this is the first in-planta proteome characterization of this biotrophic pathogen, thus this study will open new insights into our understanding of this pathogen colonization strategy of both susceptible and Rpv3-mediated resistance grapevine genotypes. Stair climbing is one of the most important capabilities of mobile robots. Therefore, stair-climbing mobile robots have become a field of study and diverse stair-climbing mobile robots have been developed. Although tri-wheel-based stair-climbing robotic platforms were developed to overcome the challenges posed by stair climbing, they have shown limitations such as impact during locomotion and damage owing to friction with the nosing of the stairs. In this study, several tail mechanisms were proposed and designed to solve the limitations of tri-wheel-based stair-climbing robots. A comparative analysis of the tail mechanisms was performed through dynamic simulations based on various performance indices. It was observed that the tail mechanism improved the stability and stair-climbing performance of the tri-wheel-based stair-climbing robots. The experimental verification confirmed the reliability of the comparative analysis results based on the simulation. These findings can be used to design mobile stair-climbing robots. The novelty of the current article is to investigate the adsorption potential of the Egyptian natural and activated bentonite (Na-bentonite) to inorganic and organic phosphorus (IP, OP) in aqueous media. The natural bentonite (NB) was activated to Na-bentonite (Na-B) by a new facile method within 2 h. NB and Na-B were also characterized using XRD, XRF, BET ESM, and FT-IR. The batch experiment has been employed to select the ideal conditions for the removal of inorganic and organic phosphorus (IP, OP) from aqueous solutions. The findings clearly showed that the Na-bentonite is enriched with sodium in the form of Na-montmorillonite with a higher specific area 138.51 m2/g than the value for the natural bentonite 74.21 m2/g. The batch experiment showed maximum absorption for both IP and OP adsorbents occurred at an equilibrium pH = 6, contact time of 40 to 50 min, 40 °C temperature, and a dose rate of 2 mg/L and 1 mg/L, respectively. The equilibrium data displayed better adjustment to Langmuir than the Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms and adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order-type kinetic, and the parameters of thermodynamics reveal that adsorption occurs spontaneously and exothermic nature. Na-bentonite proved to be more efficient in removing target material than natural bentonite. The spent bentonites were easily regenerated by chemical methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the chloroplast (cp) genomes of Hemiptelea davidii, Ulmus parvifolia, Ulmus lamellosa, Ulmus castaneifolia, and Ulmus pumila 'zhonghuajinye' were spliced, assembled and annotated using the Illumina HiSeq PE150 sequencing platform, and then compared to the cp genomes of other Ulmus and Ulmaceae species. The results indicated that the cp genomes of the five sequenced species showed a typical tetrad structure with full lengths ranging from 159,113 to 160,388 bp. The large single copy (LSC), inverted repeat (IR), and small single copy (SSC) lengths were in the range of 87,736–88,466 bp, 26,317–26,622 bp and 18,485–19,024 bp, respectively. A total of 130–131 genes were annotated, including 85–86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and eight rRNA genes. The GC contents of the five species were similar, ranging from 35.30 to 35.62%. Besides, the GC content was different in different region and the GC content in IR region was the highest. A total of 64-133 single sequence repeat (SSR) loci were identified among all 21 Ulmaceae species. The (A)n and (T)n types of mononucleotide were highest in number, and the lengths were primarily distributed in 10–12 bp, with a clear AT preference. A branch-site model and a Bayes Empirical Bayes analysis indicated that the rps15 and rbcL had the positive selection sites. Besides, the analysis of mVISTA and sliding windows got a lot of hotspots such as trnH/psbA, rps16/trnQ, trnS/trnG, trnG/trnR and rpl32/trnL, which could be utilized as potential markers for the species identification and phylogeny reconstruction within Ulmus in the further studies. Moreover, the evolutionary tree of Ulmaceae species based on common protein genes, whole cp genome sequences and common genes in IR region of the 23 Ulmaceae species were constructed using the ML method. The results showed that these Ulmaceae species were divided into two branches, one that included Ulmus, Zelkova and Hemiptelea, among which Hemiptelea was the first to differentiate and one that included Celtis, Trema, Pteroceltis, Gironniera and Aphananthe. Besides, these variations found in this study could be used for the classification, identification and phylogenetic study of Ulmus species. Deep learning-based approaches in histopathology can be largely divided into two categories: a high-level approach using an end-to-end model and a low-level approach using feature extractors. Although the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are empirically well known, there exists no scientific basis for choosing a specific approach in research, and direct comparative analysis of the two approaches has rarely been performed. Using the Cancer Genomic Atlas (TCGA)-based dataset, we compared these two different approaches in microsatellite instability (MSI) prediction and analyzed morphological image features associated with MSI. Our high-level approach was based solely on EfficientNet, while our low-level approach relied on LightGBM and multiple deep learning models trained on publicly available multiclass tissue, nuclei, and gland datasets. We compared their performance and important image features. Our high-level approach showed superior performance compared to our low-level approach. In both approaches, debris, lymphocytes, and necrotic cells were revealed as important features of MSI, which is consistent with clinical knowledge. Then, during qualitative analysis, we discovered the weaknesses of our low-level approach and demonstrated that its performance can be improved by using different image features in a complementary way. Salt stress reduces wheat yield. Therefore, improvement for enhanced salt stress tolerance is necessary for stable production. To understand the molecular mechanism of salt tolerance in common wheat and synthetic hexaploid (SH) wheat, RNA sequencing was performed on the roots of three wheat lines salt-tolerant SH wheat, salt-tolerant common wheat, and salt-sensitive common wheat. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in response to salt stress were characterized using gene ontology enrichment analysis. Salt tolerance in common wheat has been suggested to be mainly regulated by the activation of transporters. In contrast, salt tolerance in SH wheat is enhanced through up-regulation of the reactive oxygen species signaling pathway, other unknown pathways, and different ERF transcription factors. These results indicate that salt tolerance is differentially controlled between common wheat and SH wheat. Furthermore, QTL analysis was performed using the F2 population derived from SH and salt-sensitive wheat. No statistically significant QTL was detected, suggesting that numerous QTLs with negligible contributions are involved in salt tolerance in SH wheat. We also identified DEGs specific to each line near one probable QTL. These findings show that SH wheat possesses salt tolerance mechanisms lacking in common wheat and may be potential breeding material for salt tolerance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoparticles found in all biological fluids, capable of transporting biological material around the body. Extensive research into the physiological role of EVs has led to the development of the Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles (MISEV) framework in 2018. This framework guides the standardisation of protocols in the EV field. To date, the focus has been on EVs of human origin. As comparative medicine progresses, there has been a drive to study similarities between diseases in humans and animals. To successfully research EVs in felines, we must validate the application of the MISEV guidelines in this group. EVs were isolated from the plasma of healthy humans and felines. EV characterisation was carried out according to the MISEV guidelines. Human and feline plasma showed a similar concentration of EVs, comparable expression of known EV markers and analogous particle to protein ratios. Mass spectrometry analyses showed that the proteomic signature of EVs from humans and felines were similar. Asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation, showed two distinct subpopulations of EVs isolated from human plasma, whereas only one subpopulation was isolated from feline plasma. Metabolomic profiling showed similar profiles for humans and felines. In conclusion, isolation, and characterisation of EVs from humans and felines show that MISEV2018 guidelines may also be applied to felines.
