Separation of domestic effluents at the source and the utilization of low-flush toilets offer alternative approaches for developing efficient wastewater treatment systems while promoting energy generation through anaerobic digestion. This study focused on assessing toilet usage in Mexico and exploring the potential of anaerobic co-digestion of brown water (feces) and toilet paper as influential factors in wastewater treatment systems. A survey was conducted on a representative sample of Mexicans to gather information on toilet usage frequency, toilet paper use and disposal practices, as well as the type and quantity of commercial disinfectants and pharmaceutical compounds they use or consume. The survey revealed that per capita toilet paper consumption is 2.9 kg annually, that 58 % of respondents do not dispose used paper in the toilet, and that about 47 % use two to three cleaning and disinfection products. Notably, 97 % of the sampled Mexican population expressed a willingness to transition to more eco-friendly toilet options. Subsequently, in a second step, the anaerobic co-digestion of brown water with toilet paper was evaluated, demonstrating a relatively high production of volatile fatty acids but low methane production. This suggests an efficient hydrolysis/acidogenesis process coupled with restrained methanogenesis, probably due to pH decrease caused by acidogenesis. This study underscores that toilet paper and brown water are potential suitable substrates for anaerobic co-digestion. In the current context of water environmental monitoring and pollution control, there's a crucial need for rapid and simple methods to detect multi-pollutant. We herein report an easy one-step hydrothermal synthesis method to produce Eu-based metal-organic frameworks (Eu MOFs), which was used as a fluorescent probe to detect the aquatic environmental pollutants of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and aluminum ions (Al 3+ ). This fluorescent sensor enabled the cascade detection of CIP and Al 3+ through fluorescence enhancement and ratio fluorescence response, respectively. The introduction of CIP significantly turned on the characteristic fluorescence of Eu MOFs at 595 nm and 616 nm through the "antenna effect". Based on this, the sensor enables quantitative detection of CIP within a linear range of 0-120 μM with a LOD as low as 50.421 nM. In the presence of Al 3+ , the fluorescence emission of Eu MOFs-CIP was sharply turned off due to strong Al 3+ coordination with CIP, while the blue fluorescence emission of CIP was remarkably enhanced. And thus allowing ratio fluorescence quantitative detection of Al 3+ (LOD = 2.681 μM). The introduction of CIP and Al 3+ in cascade resulted in distinct fluorescence color changes from colorless to red and eventually to blue, exhibiting pronounced fluorescence characteristics. This observable phenomenon enables the visual detection of CIP and Al 3+ in both aqueous phase and paper test strips. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated research towards developing low-cost assays for automated urban wastewater monitoring assay that can be integrated into an environmental surveillance system for early warning of frequent disease outbreaks and future pandemics. Microbial concentration is one of the most challenging steps in wastewater surveillance, due to the sample heterogeneity and low pathogen load. Keeping in mind the requirements of large-scale testing in densely populated low- or middle-income countries (LMICs), such assays would need to be low-cost and have rapid turnaround time with high recovery efficiency. In this study, two such methods are presented and evaluated against commercially available kits for pathogen detection in wastewater. The first method utilizes paper dipsticks while the second method comprises of a PTFE membrane filter (PMF) integrated with a peristaltic pump. Both methods were used to concentrate and isolate nucleic acids from different microbes such as SARS-CoV-2, pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), bacteriophage Phi6, and E. coli from wastewater samples with minimal or no sample pre-processing. More than 80 % of China's grasslands are classified as degraded, and the loss of soil carbon storage due to degradation has a significant impact on China's terrestrial carbon sinks as well as carbon neutrality targets. The loss of soil carbon storage in degraded grasslands can serve as a benchmark for quantifying the carbon sequestration capacity of restored grasslands in the future. Here, above- and below-ground biomass, soil organic carbon (SOC) content at various depths (0-100 cm) and soil bulk density were collected from 226 degradation sequences around China. The above information was integrated and statistically analyzed to quantify the difference of SOC storage between the degraded and natural grassland at national scale. The result showed that grassland degradation led to a significant reduction in SOC storage across different depths. SOC (0-100 cm) of degraded grassland decreased by 39 % compared to that of natural grassland, ranging from 21 % in the lightly degraded sites to 59 % of the extremely degraded sites. 15 potential predictors were used to estimate the national amount of these differences of 0-20 cm depth SOC storage as 5.29 ± 1.59 Pg C. The microplastics (MPs), a novel pollutant, and heavy metals (HMs) significantly affect soil ecology. The study investigated HMs and MPs in Qianxi's high geological background soil, established a model for risk evaluation with MPs types and shapes, and proposed a two-dimensional comprehensive index model for MPs-HMs combined pollution and risk evaluation criterion. The results revealed a high soil Cd concentration, with a mean value of 0.38 mg·kg -1 . Additionally, soils from soybean-wheat intercropping-potato-corn rotation (SWI-PCR) exhibited significantly higher concentrations of Hg, As, and Pb compared with those from soybean-wheat intercropping-corn rotation (SWI-CR). Moreover, the soil exhibited a high abundance of MPs (8667.66 ± 3864.26 items·kg -1 ), mainly characterized by PS and fiber. The mean of adjusted ecological risk index (ARI) for MPs in soil was 525.27, indicating a grade 3 risk. The two-dimensional combined index (TPI) was used to assess the ecological risk of MPs-HMs combined pollution, exhibiting an exceedance rate of 56 % with a mean of 445.07. The risk level of the combined pollution was graded as 6, indicating high risk. As one of the nine primary non-ferrous metal smelting bases in China, Daye Lake basin was polluted due to diverse human activities. But so far the pollution status and related ecological risks of this region have not been detailly investigated. In current study, pollutants including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in eight sediment samples from Daye Lake were quantified. 18S rRNA gene sequencing was employed to profile the nematode community structure within these sediments. Model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) were further applied for a comprehensive ecological risk assessment of Daye Lake. Notably, Cadmium (Cd) was identified as a key driver of ecological risk, reaching an index of 1287.35. At sample point S4, OCPs particularly p,p'-DDT, displayed an extreme ecological risk with a value of 23.19. Cephalobidae and Mononchida showed strong sensitivity to pollutant levels, reinforcing their suitability as robust bioindicators. The composite pollutants in sampled sediments caused oxidative stress in C. elegans, with gene Vit-2 and Mtl-1 as sensitive biomarkers. Iodo-phenolic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) widely occur in disinfected water, posing potential risks to human health and the ecosystem as they possess higher toxicity than the bromo- and chloro-analogs. Herein, we elucidated the catalytic hydrodehalogenation (HDH) activity and selectivity of polyiodinated phenolic DBPs on supported noble metal catalysts at ambient conditions. Both 2,4,6-triiodophenol and 4-chloro-2,6-diiodophenol can be efficiently eliminated on Pd/TiO 2 and Rh/TiO 2 within 20 min, with Pd/TiO 2 exhibiting higher turnover frequency. The HDH reactions proceeded in both stepwise and concerted pathways on Pd/TiO 2 , while they were dominantly stepwise on Rh/TiO 2 . Experimental results and theoretical calculations revealed that the HDH selectivity depends on the position and the bond energy of halo-substitutions. For the HDH of 2,4,6-triiodophenol, the para-substituted iodine was more favorable to be dehalogenated than the ortho-substituted ones due to the steric hindrance of the hydroxyl group. For the HDH of 4-chloro-2,6-diiodophenol, the ortho-substituted iodine was removed before the para-substituted chlorine as CI bond had higher reactivity than CCl bond. Significant catalyst deactivation was observed for the HDH of 4-chloro-2,6-diiodophenol on Pd/TiO 2 due to iodine poisoning, resulting in 4-chlorophenol as the dominant product. In contrast, Rh/TiO 2 can completely hydrodehalogenate 4-chloro-2,6-diiodophenol into cyclohexanone with little iodine poisoning. Our results suggest that HDH is an efficient process for abating iodo-phenolic DBPs. Contaminants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be released from asphalt pavement and transported through stormwater runoff to nearby water bodies, leading to water pollution and potential harm to living aquatic animals. This study characterizes the heavy metal and PAH leaching from various asphalt paving materials and their potential ecotoxicological effects on zebrafish Danio rerio. Artificial runoffs were prepared in the laboratory concerning the effects of water, temperature, and traffic. The concentrations of heavy metals and PAHs in the leachates were quantified, while the toxicity assessment encompassed mortality, metal stress, PAH toxicity, inflammation, carcinogenicity, and oxidative damage. Gene expressions of related proteins or transcription factors were assessed, including metallothionines, aryl hydrocarbon receptors, interleukin-1β, interleukin-10, nuclear factor-κB, tumor necrosis factor-α, tumor suppressor p53, heat shock protein 70, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The findings demonstrate that leachates from asphalt pavements containing waste bottom ash, crumb rubber, or specific chemicals could induce notable stress and inflammation responses in zebrafish. In addition, potential carcinogenic effects and the elevation of ROS were identified within certain treatment groups. Manufactured soils, created by combining various organic and inorganic waste materials and byproducts, may be tailored to specific applications, providing an alternative to the extraction of natural soils. It is important for them to be capable of supporting plant growth without the need for significant management or fertiliser applications, the over-application of which can have adverse environmental effects. We examined the dynamics of phosphorus (P) transformations within a manufactured soil and the implications for nutrient cycling. A freshly prepared manufactured soil (32.5 % composted green waste, 32.5 % composted bark, 25 % horticultural grit, and 10 % lignite clay) was studied over one year in temperature and moisture controlled mesocosms. Leachate was collected to achieve high-resolution monitoring of leached phosphate concentrations. Initially, leached dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations were low (0.02 ± 0.01 mg P L -1 ), before increasing by 160 μg P L -1 d -1 over the first 42 days to 5.57 ± 1.23 mg P L -1 . After reaching a maximum concentration, DIP concentrations remained relatively consistent, varying by only 1.67 mg P L -1 until day 270. The increase in leached DIP was likely driven by soil organic matter mineralisation and the cleavage of carbon‑phosphorus bonds by the soil microbes to satisfy carbon demand with mineralogical influences, such as a decrease in apatite content, also contributing. Sorption and desorption from soil particles were the processes behind the P loss from the soil, which was followed by slow diffusion and eventual loss via leaching. The fertiliser application on phosphate dynamics resulted in increased DIP leaching. P concentrations observed in the manufactured soil were within the range considered sufficient to support plant growth. Accelerating global urbanization is leading to drastic losses and restructuring of biodiversity. Although it is crucial to understand urban impacts on biodiversity to develop mitigation strategies, there is a dearth of knowledge on the functional structure of fish assemblages spanning the entire city-scale spectrum of urbanization intensity. Here, using environmental DNA sampled from 109 water sites in Beijing, we investigated the taxonomic and functional diversity patterns of fish assemblages across the city and uncovered community-, trait-, and species-level responses to various environmental stressors. By ranking sampling sites into three disturbance levels according to water physiochemical and landcover conditions, we found that both native and non-native fish taxonomic and functional α-diversity decreased significantly with elevating disturbance, as strong disturbance led to the disappearance of many species. However, the quantitative taxonomic and functional β-diversity components of native and non-native fish showed distinct patterns; assemblage turnover dominated native fish β-diversity and decreased with increasing disturbance, whereas species/trait richness differences dominated non-native fish β-diversity and increased with disturbance intensity particularly in lotic waters. RLQ and fourth-corner analyses revealed that fish size, fecundity, diet, and reproductive behaviors were significantly correlated with water quality, with pollution-tolerant, larger-sized native and omnivorous non-native fishes being urban winners, which indicates strong trait-dependent environmental filtering. Potential ecological indicator species were identified based on the sensitivity of fish responses to pollution loads; these were mostly small native species, and many have bivalve-dependent reproduction. Our results demonstrate that, along with native fish assemblage simplification and homogenization, urban stressors exert profound impacts on community trait composition, highlighting the need to consider both biodiversity loss and functional reorganization in combating disturbance of aquatic ecosystems under global urbanization. The coastal zone serves as a crucial hub for economic and population concentration. Amid the context of high-intensity development and global climate change, uncertain risks from diverse sources-including extreme weather events (i.e., high temperatures, typhoons, and excessive precipitation), natural disasters (i.e., floods, tsunamis, landslides, and mudslides), and societal disruptions (i.e., economic crises and viral diseases)-are escalating rapidly. Enhancing coastal resilience to minimize these risk impacts is progressively becoming a mandatory requirement for the sustainable development of coastal zones. However, existing research primarily focuses on distinct disasters, the ecological environment, or specific socio-economic aspects, thereby lacking a comprehensive theoretical framework and thorough analysis of the factors influencing coastal resilience. Here, we construct a theoretical framework centered on the unique traits and processes of coastal resilience, analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of coastal resilience from a grid and administrative division standpoint, and utilize geographic detectors to determine the factors influencing coastal resilience while considering the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP). Our findings indicate that: (1) Coastal resilience in the East China Sea (ECS) initially declined but then increased, transitioning from a lower to a medium level. Barring the pressure index, other dimensional indices had an upward trend; (2) Continuous improvements were observed in coastal resilience across different land uses. Forests, waters, and oceans demonstrated higher resilience levels than other lands, with construction land resilience developing swiftly. The effect of changes in land use types on coastal resilience showed a rapid initial increase and subsequent decrease; (3) The change pattern of coastal resilience in the ECS is mainly unchanged and slightly increased. Areas with the most drastic changes were concentrated in Shanghai, northern Zhejiang, and central Fujian, with the main change patterns continuously rising; (4) The primary factors influencing coastal resilience in the ECS included gross domestic product and infrastructure construction level. Advanced industrial structure, technological and educational prowess, and effective government management are important determinants of coastal resilience development. The significance of human factors continues to grow. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have proven to be a useful tool for complex questions that involve large amounts of data. Our use case of predicting soil maps with ANNs is in high demand by government agencies, construction companies, or farmers, given cost and time intensive field work. However, there are two main challenges when applying ANNs. In their most common form, deep learning algorithms do not provide interpretable predictive uncertainty. This means that properties of an ANN such as the certainty and plausibility of the predicted variables, rely on the interpretation by experts rather than being quantified by evaluation metrics validating the ANNs. Further, these algorithms have shown a high confidence in their predictions in areas geographically distant from the training area or areas sparsely covered by training data. To tackle these challenges, we use the Bayesian deep learning approach "last-layer Laplace approximation", which is specifically designed to quantify uncertainty into deep networks, in our explorative study on soil classification. It corrects the overconfident areas without reducing the accuracy of the predictions, giving us a more realistic uncertainty expression of the model's prediction. In our study area in southern Germany, we subdivide the soils into soil regions and as a test case we explicitly exclude two soil regions in the training area but include these regions in the prediction. Our results emphasize the need for uncertainty measurement to obtain more reliable and interpretable results of ANNs, especially for regions far away from the training area. Moreover, the knowledge gained from this research addresses the problem of overconfidence of ANNs and provides valuable information on the predictability of soil types and the identification of knowledge gaps. The study explores the effect of varying molasses proportions as a binder on the characteristics of densified char obtained through the slow co-pyrolysis of plastic waste and Eucalyptus wood waste (Waste low-density polyethylene - Eucalyptus wood (WLDPE-EW) and Waste Polystyrene - Eucalyptus wood (WPS-EW)). Pyrolysis was conducted at 500 °C with a residence time of 120 min, employing plastic to wood waste ratios of 1:2 and 1:3 (w/w). The focus was on how varying the proportion of molasses (10-30 %), influences the physical and combustion properties of the resulting biofuel pellets. Our findings reveal that the calorific value of the pellets decreased from 28.94 to 27.44 MJ/Kg as the molasses content increased. However, this decrease in calorific value was compensated by an increase in pellet mass density, which led to a higher energy density overall. This phenomenon was attributed to the formation of solid bridges between particles, facilitated by molasses, effectively decreasing particle spacing. The structural integrity of the pellets, as measured by the impact resistance index, improved significantly (43-47 %) with the addition of molasses. However, a significant change in the combustion characteristics depicted by lower ignition and burnout temperatures were observed due to decrease in fixed carbon value and increase in volatile matter content, as the proportion of molasses increased. Despite these changes, the pellets demonstrated a stable combustion profile, suggesting that molasses are an effective binder for producing biofuel pellets through the densification of char derived from the co-pyrolysis of plastic and Eucalyptus wood waste. The optimized molasses concentration analyzed through multifactor regression analysis was 16.96 % with 28 % WLDPE proportion to produce WLDPE-EW char pellets. In this review, we have summarized the current knowledge about the environmental importance, relevance, and consequences of microbial arsenic (As) methylation in various ecosystems. In this regard, we have presented As biomethylation in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems particularly in rice paddy soils and wetlands. The functions of As biomethylation by microbial consortia in anaerobic and aerobic conditions are extensively discussed. In addition, we have tried to explain the interconnections between As transformation and carbon (C), such as microbial degradation of organic compounds and methane (CH 4 ) emission. These processes can cause As release because of the reduction of arsenate (As(V)) to the more mobile arsenite (As(III)) as well as As methylation and the formation of toxic trivalent methylated As species in anaerobic conditions. Furthermore, the sulfur (S) transformation can form highly toxic thiolated As species owing to its interference with As biomethylation. Besides, we have focused on many other mutual interlinks that remain elusive between As and C, including As biomethylation, thiolation, and CH 4 emission, in the soil-water systems. Recent developments have clarified the significant and complex interactions between the coupled microbial process in anoxic and submerged soils. These processes, performed by little-known/unknown microbial taxa or well-known members of microbial communities with unrecognized metabolic pathways, conducted several concurrent reactions that contributed to global warming on our planet and have unfavorable impacts on water quality and human food resources. Finally, some environmental implications in rice production and arsenic removal from soil-water systems are discussed. In the context of climate change, it is crucial to examine the contributions of leading countries in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This research provides an overview of global GHG emissions from 1970 to 2022 for the world's most polluting countries: the United States, China, India, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, Iran, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. These countries collectively account for approximately 64% of GHG emissions. The aim is to understand the impact of various economic sectors, such as industry, energy, agriculture, and transportation, on overall emissions. The analysis highlights the disparity in per capita emissions, with smaller but major oil-producing countries in the Persian Gulf, such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, exhibiting high per capita emission levels, while more populated countries like the United States and South Korea show lower per capita values but significant total emission volumes. The study suggests that transitioning to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency in industry, promoting sustainable agriculture, reforestation, and electrifying transportation are key methods to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG). Recommendations include encouraging technological innovations, implementing stringent government regulations and standards, and garnering active support for GHG reduction programs from governments, financial institutions, and the business community. Cost limitations often lead to the adoption of lower precision grids for soil sampling in large-scale areas, potentially causing deviations in the observed trace metal (TM) concentrations from their true values. Therefore, in this study, an enhanced Health Risk Assessment (HRA) model was developed by combining Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and Empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK), aiming to improve the accuracy of health risk assessment under low-precision sampling conditions. The results showed that the increased sampling scale led to an overestimation of the non-carcinogenic risk for children, resulting in potential risks (the maximum Hazard index value was 1.08 and 1.64 at the 500 and 1000 m sampling scales, respectively). EBK model was suitable for predicting soil TM concentrations at large sampling scale, and the predicted concentrations were closer to the actual value. Furthermore, we found that the improved HRA model by combining EBK and MCS effectively reduced the possibility of over- or under-estimation of risk levels due to the increasing sampling size, and enhanced the accuracy and robustness of risk assessment. Climate change and human activities drive widespread shrub encroachment in global grassland ecosystems, particularly in the Eurasian steppe. Caragana shrubs, the primary contributors to shrub encroachment in this region, play a crucial role in shaping the ecosystem's structure and function. Future changes in the suitable distribution range of Caragana species will directly affect the ecological security and sustainable socio-economic development of the Eurasian steppe ecosystem. We used an ensemble modeling approach to predict Caragana shrub-dominated plant communities' current and future distribution in three major steppe subregions: the Black Sea-Kazakhstan steppe, the Tibetan Plateau steppe, and the Central Asian steppe. We assessed the potential risk of Caragana shrub encroachment by predicting changes in the suitable distribution area of 19 Caragana shrub species under future climate changes. Our research findings suggest that the expansion of Caragana species in different subregions of the Eurasian steppe is influenced by the effects of climate change in various ways. The distribution of Caragana species is primarily influenced by precipitation and temperature, and the global human modification (ghm) has a significant impact on the Central Asian and Tibetan Plateau subregions. Minimal changes are expected in the Black Sea-Kazakhstan subregion, a slight increase on the Tibetan Plateau, and a substantial rise in the Central Asian subregion, which suggests a higher potential risk of Caragana species shrub encroachment in that area. Our research provides valuable insights into the response of Caragana shrub encroachment to changing climates and human activities. Long-term, high spatiotemporal resolution of surface water area, water level, and storage changes in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) has great scientific and practical importance for improving the management of water resources. Here, three distinct area estimations were first derived using the water classification enhancement method, automated water extraction method based on random forest, and the modified normalized difference water index. The optimized area data was determined by comparing against Sentinel-2 with the minimum root mean square error. A new area data was constructed with the optimized area as the primary data, while the remaining datasets were employed to fill in gaps. The elevation-area relationship was used to derive monthly water level. Changes in water storage were calculated by applying the pyramidal frustum formula from surface water area and water level data. Finally, a new comprehensive dataset of the monthly area, level, and storage changes in the 119 lakes and 75 reservoirs across the YRB with area larger than 10 km 2 from 1990 to 2021 were first reconstructed. The spatiotemporal trends of surface water area/level/storage in lakes and reservoirs over 11 sub-basins of the YRB were quantified from 1990 to 2021, as well as before (1990-2003) and after (2003-2021) the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). During 1990-2021, there was a marked decrease in surface water area/level/storage in most of the YRB sub-basins, which contain 79 % of the lakes and 30 % of the reservoirs. After TGD was constructed, the surface water in lakes decreased by 10 %, while that of reservoirs remained consistent with the pre-construction. The surface water area/level/storage in the lower sub-basins of YRB exhibited a decline to an upward trend before and after the construction of TGD. The low anaerobic digestion efficiency of the solid phase separated from pre-treated sludge indicates the need to explore other suitable resource utilization pathways for sludge solid phase. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and in-depth research on the physicochemical properties of sludge solid phase. This study comprehensively analyzes the characteristics of sludge solid phase and elucidates the mechanism of sludge solid phase in the anaerobic degradation of toxic wastewater. The results show that the surface free energy of sludge solid phase after different pre-treatments is mainly contributed by Lewis acid-base hydration free energy. The distribution of proteins on the surface of sludge solid phase plays a major role in the adhesion between sludge solid particles. Metal ions in the sludge solid phase are mainly present in the exchange state, followed by the carbonate state and the organics-bound state. The sludge solid phase obtained by sludge pH 12 + 150 °C treatment has the highest conductivity (1.36 mS/m) and capacitance (25.51 μF/g), mainly due to the presence of melanoidins in the sludge solid phase, which has similar semiquinone radicals to humic acids, thus increasing conductivity. The addition of sludge solid phase promotes an increase in cumulative methane production and rate of methane production. The sludge solid phase might play a role of an auxiliary carbon source acting as an adsorbent to buffer against toxicity inhibition and facilitate electron transfer. The escalating production and improper disposal of petrochemical-based plastics have led to a global pollution issue with microplastics (MPs), which pose a significant ecological threat. Biobased and biodegradable plastics are believed to mitigate plastic pollution. However, their environmental fate and toxicity remain poorly understood. This study compares the in vivo effects of different types of MPs, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) as a biodegradable plastic, polylactic acid (PLA) as a biobased plastic, β-cyclodextrin-grafted PLA as a modified biobased plastic, and low density polyethylene as the reference petrochemical-based plastic, on the key aquatic primary consumer Diaphanosoma celebensis. Exposure to MPs resulted in significant reproductive decline, with comparable effects observed irrespective of MP type or concentration. Exposure to MPs induced distinct responses in redox stress, with transcriptional profiling revealing differential gene expression patterns that indicate varied cellular responses to different types of MPs. ATP-binding cassette transporter activity assays demonstrated altered efflux activity, mainly in response to modified biobased and biodegradable MPs. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals", are a class of man-made, extremely stable chemicals, which are widely used in industrial and commercial applications. Exposure to some PFAS is now known to be detrimental to human health. By virtue of PFAS long residence times, they are widely detected in the environment, including remote locations such as the Arctics, where the origin of the PFAS is poorly understood. It has been suggested that PFAS may be transported through contaminated waters, leading to accumulation in coastal areas, where they can be aerosolised via sea spray, thereby extending their geographical distribution far beyond their original source regions. The aim of this work is to investigate, for the first time, whether "forever chemicals" could be transported to areas considered to be pristine, far from coastal sites. This study was performed at the Amazonian Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), a unique remote site situated in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, where a restricted PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), was observed with concentrations reaching up to 2 pg/m 3 . A clear trend of increasing concentration with sampling height was observed and air masses from the south over Manaus had the highest concentrations. Atmospheric lifetime estimations, removal mechanisms supported by measurements at two heights (320 and 42 m above the rainforest), and concentration spikes indicated a long-range transport of PFOA to pristine Amazon rainforest. Potential sources, including industrial activities in urban areas, were explored, and historical fire management practices considered. This research presents the first measurements of PFAS in the atmosphere of Amazon rainforest. Remarkably, even in this remote natural environment, appreciable levels of PFAS can be detected. Despite the increasing evidence for rapid thermal evolution in natural populations, evolutionary rescue under global warming may be constrained by the presence of other stressors. Highly relevant in our polluted planet, is the largely ignored evolutionary trade-off between heat tolerance and tolerance to pollutants. By using two subpopulations (separated 40 years in time) from a resurrected natural population of the water flea Daphnia magna that experienced a threefold increase in heat wave frequency during this period, we tested whether rapid evolution of heat tolerance resulted in reduced tolerance to the widespread metal zinc and whether this would affect heat tolerance upon exposure to the pollutant. Our results revealed rapid evolution of increased heat tolerance in the recent subpopulation. Notably, the sensitivity to the metal tended to be stronger (reduction in net energy budget) or was only present (reductions in heat tolerance and in sugar content) in the recent subpopulation. As a result, the rapidly evolved higher heat tolerance of the recent subpopulation was fully offset when exposed to zinc. Micro-nanoplastics (MNPs) pollution as a global environmental issue has received increasing interest in recent years. MNPs can enter and accumulate in the organisms including human beings mainly via ingestion and inhalation, and large amounts of foodborne MNPs have been frequently detected in human intestinal tracts and fecal samples. MNPs regulate the structure composition and metabolic functions of gut microbiota, which may cause the imbalance of intestinal ecosystems of the hosts and further mediate the occurrence and development of various diseases. In addition, a growing number of MNPs-degrading strains have been isolated from organismal feces. MNPs-degraders colonize the plastic surfaces and form the biofilms, and the long-chain polymers of MNPs can be biologically depolymerized into short chains. In general, MNPs are gradually degraded into small molecule substances (e.g., N 2 , CH 4 , H 2 O, and CO 2 ) via a series of enzymatic catalyses, mainly including biodeterioration, fragmentation, assimilation, and mineralization. There is insufficient understanding of the spatio-temporal evolution of surface water-groundwater quality and hydraulic connection under both natural and human influences in urban river basins. To this end, this paper investigated the spatio-seasonal pattern of hydrochemical evolution and surface water-groundwater interaction in a typical urban river basin (Dahei River basin) based on isotopic and hydrochemical data of 132 water samples collected during three seasons (normal, wet and dry seasons). From the normal season to the wet season, surface water in the Dahei River basin was dominated by the impacts of evaporation and groundwater discharge processes. During this period, the precipitation and agricultural activities (canal irrigation) were frequent. Thus, groundwater was affected by irrigation infiltration of surface water and precipitation from high-altitude areas. From the wet season to the dry season, precipitation decreased and irrigation methods changed (canal irrigation → well irrigation). In this case, groundwater discharge had a stronger impact on surface water, and shallow groundwater was recharged by deep groundwater through the well irrigation. Under this hydrological pattern, the hydrochemical characteristics of surface water were mainly influenced by evaporation, human activities (agricultural irrigation and sewage treatment) and groundwater discharge. In contrast, the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater were main influenced by water-rock interactions (dissolution of evaporites and silicates, and cation exchange) and human activities. The widespread presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in various environmental matrices and their adverse health effects have gained worldwide attention. Therefore, numerous studies have focused on human exposure to PFAS through different pathways, such as fish and drinking water, and little attention has been paid to milk consumption. This study aimed to explore the transfer of PFAS by investigating the occurrence of PFAS in cow feed, drinking water, and raw milk from 20 regions of China and to assess the risk of human exposure to PFAS from raw milk. In total, 13, 15, and 7 PFAS were detected in cow feed, drinking water, and raw milk with total concentrations (∑PFAS) of 5.59 ± 2.91 ng/g (mean ± standard deviation), 11.91 ± 23.12 ng/L, and 0.15 ± 0.13 ng/mL, respectively. Perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) was dominant with a concentration of 2.28 ± 1.75 ng/g, approximately 40.7 % of ∑PFAS in feed. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) were the dominant compounds found in drinking water at 4.80 ± 14.37 and 3.01 ± 6.06 ng/L, respectively. Additionally, PFOA (0.08 ± 0.09 ng/mL) was the most significant compound in raw milk, contributing 51.5 % of ∑PFAS. Moreover, the results of the carry-over rate (COR) were as follows: perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, 29.58 %) > PFOA (15.78 %) > perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS, 9.45 %). According to the reference dose (RfD) established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2018, there is a potential toxicological hazard of PFOA exposure for preschool children through milk consumption. Notably, the health risk from PFOS for 1-year-old children in Central China exceeded that observed for humans in other regions and age groups. The excessive accumulation of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in soil poses a serious threat to soil ecosystems and crop safety production. Electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) has been considered as a potential technology for remediating organic contaminated soils. In order to investigate the effect of different electric fields on removal efficiency of DBP, three kinds of electric fields were set up in this study (1 V·cm -1 , 2 V·cm -1 and 3 V·cm -1 ). The results showed that 59 % of DBP in soil was removed by maize (Zea mays L.) within 20 d in low-intensity electric field (1 V·cm -1 ), and the accumulation of DBP in maize tissues decreased significantly compared to the non-electrified treatment group. Interestingly, it could be observed that the low-intensity electric field could maintain ion homeostasis and improve the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant, thereby relieving the inhibition of DBP on plant growth and increasing the chlorophyll content (94.1 %) of maize. However, the removal efficiency of DBP by maize decreased significantly under the medium-intensity (2 V·cm -1 ) and high-intensity electric field (3 V·cm -1 ). Moreover, the important roles of soil enzyme and rhizosphere bacterial community in low-electric field were also investigated and discussed. Straw incorporation with nitrogen (N) fertilization is crucial for enhancing soil fertility and minimizing negative environmental impacts by altering the magnitude and direction of soil N transformation processes. However, the response of soil N transformations to long-term carbon (C) and N inputs, and their primary driving factors, remain poorly understood. Thus, a 15 N tracing study was conducted to investigate the effects of straw incorporation (AS) and straw removal (NS) with N levels of 0, 150 and 250 kg N ha -1 per season (N0, N150 and N250) on gross N transformation rates in the North China Plain after 6-year trial. Results indicated that at N0, AS significantly increased soil microbial immobilization of nitrate (NO 3 - -N, I NO3 ) and autotrophic nitrification rates (O NH4 ) compared to NS. With N fertilization, AS increased gross N immobilization (I total ), ammonium-N immobilization (NH 4 + -N, I NH4 ), net NH 4 + -N immobilization (I netNH4 ) and net NH 4 + -N absorption rates (A netNH4 ). Specifically, at N150, AS significantly increased recalcitrant organic N mineralization rate (M Nrec ), while significantly reducing O NH4 , labile organic N mineralization (M Nlab ), and gross N mineralization rates (M total ). At N250, A netNH4 , M Nlab , M Nrec and O NH4 under AS were significantly higher than under NS. Nitrogen application significantly increased O NH4 , I total and I NO3 under two straw management practices, and enhanced I NH4 and I netNH4 under AS. Compared to N250, N150 significantly increased I NH4 and I netNH4 under AS, while decreasing M total . Opposite results were observed under NS. Meanwhile, NO 3 - -N and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were master factors controlling immobilization, total nitrogen (TN), hydrolysable NH 4 + -N (HNN) and stable organic N significantly affected A netNH4 , while labile organic N were the key environmental factors affecting M Nrec , all of which positively influenced the rates of assimilation, mineralization and clay mineral adsorption. Microparticles such as tire-road wear particles (TRWPs) and road pavement wear particles (RPWPs) are generated by the friction between tire tread and road surface. TRWPs and RPWPs on roads are dispersed through traffic and transferred to rivers and seas via runoff to accumulate in sediments. However, research on the generation of both TRWP and RPWP has rarely been conducted. In this study, the generation of both TRWP and RPWP was investigated using a novel tire abrasion simulator equipped with paved road and bus tire, and their contributions to the generation of microparticles were examined. Two types of model paved roads, asphalt and concrete pavements (AP and CP, respectively), were applied. TRWPs generated from the simulator exhibited morphologies very similar to those on real roads. The abrasion rate for the CP was 2.8 times higher than that for the AP. The wear particle size distributions peaked at the size ranges of 63-106 μm and 212-500 μm for the AP and CP, respectively. Totals of 84 wt% and 89 wt% of the wear particles were distributed in size ranges of 38-212 μm for the AP and 106-1000 μm for the CP. The tire wear particle (TWP) contents in the total wear particles of 38-500 μm were 21.7 wt% and 30.0 wt% for the AP and CP, respectively, and decreased as the particle size decreased. The weight of RPWP was higher than that of TWP in TRWP. Accurately estimating the net ecosystem exchange of CO 2 (NEE) in cropland ecosystems is essential for understanding the impacts of agricultural practices and climate conditions. However, significant uncertainties persist in the estimation of regional cropland NEE due to landscape heterogeneity and variations in the efficacy of upscaling models. Here, we applied an integrated approach that combined object-based image analysis (OBIA) techniques with advanced machine learning (ML) approaches to upscale regional cropland NEE. We conducted a thorough evaluation of the upscaling approach across four distinct cropland areas characterized by diverse climate conditions. Our study confirmed that OBIA techniques can efficiently segment cropland objects, thereby enhancing the representation and accuracy of characteristics relevant to cropland features. The sequential least squares programming algorithm, among the three methods used for ML model integration, demonstrated exceptional performance in predicting NEE, with an R 2 value exceeding 0.80 across all study areas and peaking at 0.90 in the most successful area. On average, there was an 18 % improvement compared to the poorest-performing ML model and a 6 % enhancement compared to the best-performing ML model. The upscaled regional products exhibited superior performance in characterizing cropland NEE patterns compared to pixel-based products. Additionally, we utilized the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to assess driver importance, revealing that phenology and radiation had the greatest influence on prediction accuracy, followed by temperature and soil moisture. Excavated soil and rock (ESR) and dredging spoils (DDS) account for 23 % of the total EU waste generation in 2020. This study performs a life cycle assessment and life cycle costing to quantify the potential environmental and cost savings resulting from increasing the level of ESR and DDS prepared for reuse and recycled in comparison to the business-as-usual practice. Scenarios for the waste management pathways based on the status quo, technical feasibility or normative impositions are assessed, including the potential contribution to achieving the European Green Deal goals. Results show that promoting preparing for reuse and recycling could lead to non-negligible GHG reductions (up to 3.6 Mt. CO 2 eq.) and economic savings (EUR 12.3 billion) annually. Depending upon the scenario, 0.2 % to 1 % of the net annual GHG emissions reductions sought by the European Green Deal could be facilitated by scaling up improved circular management of ESR and DDS at the EU level. Finally, the study highlights the main barriers to scaling up to more circular (i.e., preparing for reuse and recycling) and better performing management options in Europe. Parabens are widely used as broad-spectrum anti-microbials and preservatives in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. Studies suggest that the utilization of parabens has substantially increased over the past years, particularly during the global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although parabens are generally recognized as safe by the U.S. FDA, some concerns have been raised regarding the potential health effects of parabens associated with immunotoxicity. Herein, we comprehensively investigated several key characteristics of immunotoxicants of five commonly used parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, and benzyl parabens) in human THP-1 derived macrophages, which are effector cells serving as a first line of host defense against pathogens and tumor immunosurveillance. The results indicate parabens, at concentrations found in humans and biota, significantly dampened macrophage chemotaxis and secretion of major pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) and anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10), corroborating the mRNA expression profile. Furthermore, some parabens were found to markedly alter macrophage adhesion and cell surface expression of costimulatory molecules, CD80 + and CD86 + , and significantly increase macrophage phagocytosis. Climate change is causing more frequent and intense heatwaves. Therefore, it is important to understand how heatwaves affect the terrestrial carbon cycle, especially in grasslands, which are especially susceptible to climate extremes. This study assessed the impact of naturally occurring, simultaneous short-term heatwaves on CO 2 fluxes in three ecosystems on the Mongolia Plateau: meadow steppe (MDW), typical steppe (TPL), and shrub-grassland (SHB). During three heatwaves, net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was reduced by 86 %, 178 %, and 172 % at MDW, TPL, and SHB, respectively. The changes in ecosystem respiration, gross primary production, evapotranspiration, and water use efficiency were divergent, indicating the mechanisms underlying the observed NEP decreases among the sites. The impact of the heatwave in MDW was mitigated by the high soil water content, which enhanced evapotranspiration and subsequent cooling effects. However, at TPL, insufficient soil water led to combined thermal and drought stress and low resilience. At SHB, the ecosystem's low tolerance to an August heatwave was heavily influenced by species phenology, as it coincided with the key phenological growing phase of plants. The potential key mechanism of divergent NEP response to heatwaves lies in the divergent stability and varying importance of environmental factors, combined with the specific sensitivity of NEP to each factor in ecosystems. Furthermore, our findings suggest that anomalies in soil environment, rather than atmospheric anomalies, are the primary determinants of NEP anomalies during heatwaves. This challenges the conventional understanding of heatwaves as a discrete and ephemeral periods of high air temperatures. Instead, heatwaves should be viewed as chronologically variable, compound, and time-sensitive environmental stressors. The screening and design of "green" biochar materials with high adsorption capacity play a pivotal role in promoting the sustainable treatment of Cd(II)-containing wastewater. In this study, six typical machine learning (ML) models, namely Linear Regression, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Decision Tree, CatBoost, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Backpropagation Neural Network, were employed to accurately predict the adsorption capacity of Cd(II) onto biochars. A large dataset with 1051 data points was generated using 21 input variables obtained from batch adsorption experiments, including preparation conditions for biochar (2 features), physical properties of biochar (4 features), chemical composition of biochar (9 features), and adsorption experiment conditions (6 features). The rigorous evaluation and comparison of the ML models revealed that the CatBoost model exhibited the highest test R 2 value (0.971) and the lowest RMSE (20.54 mg/g), significantly outperforming all other models. The feature importance analysis using Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) indicated that biochar chemical compositions had the greatest impact on model predictions of adsorption capacity (42.2 %), followed by adsorption conditions (37.57 %), biochar physical characteristics (12.38 %), and preparation conditions (7.85 %). The optimal experimental conditions optimized by partial dependence plots (PDP) are as follows: as high Cd(II) concentration as possible, C(%) of 33 %, N(%) of 0.3 %, adsorption time of 600 min, pyrolysis time of 50 min, biochar dosage of less than 2 g/L, O(%) of 42 %, biochar pH value of 11.2, and DBE of 1.15. Geogenic radon potential (GRP) is traditionally used for mapping radon-prone areas. However, this has challenges in the accurate assessment of radon risk because of limitations such as oversimplified soil measurements and lack of geological profiles. This study presents predictive geogenic radon potential (P-GRP), integrating geological characterization and advanced modeling for the emanation and transport of radon in the subsurface environment. Seoul, South Korea, was selected as the research area for the evaluation of hazards using P-GRP, while subway station A was selected for the assessment of indoor health risks. The geology was characterized by the layers of bedrock and soil using uranium contents and porosity. The emanation of radon was modeled considering the radioactive decay chain of uranium and the pore structures. The vertical transport of radon was modeled considering the porosity variation within geological media, which was used for the calculation of P-GRP. Without loss of continuity, the P-GRP map was constructed by calculating P-GRP at a specific depth over the Seoul area. The calculation of P-GRP in the case of subway station A demonstrates that the radon concentration in the bedrock at the platform depth was expected to be 382 million Bqm -3 . The indoor radon risk was calculated using the P-GRP by coupling the vapor intrusion process. This presented a high cancer risk for the employees as well as commuters. The P-GRP map of Seoul demonstrated higher hazards in granite zones compared to banded gneiss zones. Biodegradation in marine medium of PHBV films with or without 5 % wt. of phenolic compounds (catechin, ferulic acid, and vanillin) was assessed at laboratory scale. Respirometric analyses and film disintegration kinetics were used to monitor the process over a period of 162 days. Structural changes in the films were analyzed throughout the exposure period using FESEM, DSC, Thermogravimetric analyses, XRD, and FTIR spectra. Respirometric tests showed complete biodegradation of all materials during the exposure period (the biodegradation half-time ranged between 63 and 79 days) but at different rates, depending on the phenolic compound incorporated. Ferulic acid and vanillin accelerate the PHBV biodegradation, whereas catechin delayed the process. Disintegration kinetics confirmed these results and showed that degradation occurred from the surface to the interior of the films. This was controlled by the degradation rate of the polymer amorphous phase and the formation of a biomass coating on the film surface. This is the result of the compounds generated by polymer degradation in combination with excretions from microorganisms. This coating has the potential to affect the enzyme diffusion to the polymer substrate. Moreover, the cohesion forces of the amorphous phase (reflected in its glass transition temperature) affected its degradation rate, while the slower degrading crystalline fragments were released, thus contributing to the disintegration process on the film's surface. Ferulic acid, with its hydrolytic effect, enhanced degradation, as did vanillin for its plasticizing and weakening effect in the amorphous phase of polymer matrix. Optimizing crop distribution stands as a pivotal approach to climate change adaption, enhancing crop production sustainability, and has been recognized for its immense potential in ensuring food security while minimizing environmental impacts. Here, we developed a climate-adaptive framework to optimize the distribution of staple crops (i.e., wheat, maize, and rice) to meet the multi-dimensional needs of crop production in China. The framework considers the feasibility of the multiple cropping systems (harvesting more than once on a cropland a year) and adopts a multi-dimensional approach, incorporating goals related to crop production, water consumption, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By optimizing, the total irrigated area of three crops would decrease by 7.7 % accompanied by a substantial 69.8 % increase in rain-fed areas compared to the baseline in 2010. This optimized strategy resulted in a notable 10.0 % reduction in total GHG emissions and a 13.1 % decrease in irrigation water consumption while maintaining consistent crop production levels. In 2030, maintaining the existing crop distribution and relying solely on yield growth would lead to a significant maize production shortfall of 27.0 %, highlighting a looming challenge. To address this concern, strategic adjustments were made by reducing irrigated areas for wheat, rice, and maize by 2.3 %, 12.8 %, and 6.1 %, respectively, while simultaneously augmenting rain-fed areas for wheat and maize by 120.2 % and 55.9 %, respectively. These modifications ensure that production demands for all three crops are met, while yielding a 6.9 % reduction in GHG emissions and a 15.1 % reduction in irrigation water consumption. Chromium (Cr) poses a high ecological risk, however the toxic mechanisms of Cr in different valence states to soil organisms at cellular and molecular levels are not exactly. In this study, the Eisenia fetida coelomocytes and Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) were chosen as the target subjects to investigate the effects and mechanisms of cellular toxicity induced by Cr(VI) and Cr(III). Results indicated that Cr(VI) and Cr(III) significantly reduced the coelomocytes viability. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was markedly increased after Cr(VI) exposure, which finally reduced antioxidant defense abilities, and induced lipid peroxidation and cellular membrane damage in earthworm coelomocytes. However, Cr(III) induced lower levels of oxidative stress and cellular damage with respect to Cr(VI). From a molecular perspective, the binding of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) with Cu/Zn-SOD resulted in protein backbone loosening and reduced β-Sheet content. The Cu/Zn-SOD showed fluorescence enhancement with Cr(III), whereas Cr(VI) had no obvious effect. The activity of Cu/Zn-SOD continued to decrease with the exposure of Cr. Molecular docking indicated that Cr(III) interacted more readily with the active center of Cu/Zn-SOD. The 2021 Tajogaite eruption in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) emitted vast volumes of lava during 85 days, which reached the ocean in several occasions at the western flank of the island. Most of these flows merged to create a primary lava delta, covering an area of 48 ha, with an additional 30 ha underwater. Here we characterize the effects of the lava-seawater interaction on the surrounding marine environment. The area was sampled during two multidisciplinary oceanographic cruises: the first one comprised the days before the lava reached the ocean and after the first contact; and the second took place a month later, when the lava delta was already formed but still receiving lava inputs. Physical-chemical anomalies were found in the whole water column at different depths up to 300 m in all measured parameters, such as turbidity (+9 NTU), dissolved oxygen concentration (-17.17 μmol kg -1 ), pH T25 (-0.1), and chlorophyll-a concentration (-0.33 mg m -3 ). Surface temperature increased up to +2.3 °C (28.5 °C) and surface salinity showed increases and decreases of -1.01 and +0.70, respectively, in a radius of 4 km around the lava delta. In the water column, the heated waters experimented a lava-induced upwelling, bringing deeper, nutrient-rich waters to shallower depths; however, this feature did not trigger any phytoplankton bloom. In fact, integrated chlorophyll-a showed an abrupt decrease of -41 % in just two days and -69 % a month later, compared to prior conditions. Sustainable agriculture involves adopting best practices in food production to promote environmental and economic sustainability. Its implementation primarily aims to utilise organic residues to increase yield, diversify production, and reduce costs. In this context, the objective of this study was to investigate different substrates for Hypsizygus ulmarius production and, from its residual substrate, to develop formulations for lettuce seedling growth and subsequent greenhouse cultivation. For mushroom production, substrates were prepared from sawdust with the addition of wheat bran, rice bran, soybean meal, and calcite, resulting in four distinct substrate formulations. The spent mushroom substrate (SMS), obtained at the end of cultivation, was used for lettuce seedling production along with the commercial substrate Carolina Soil® and the soil conditioner BacSol®. The top five formulations were selected for transplanting in the greenhouse. Regarding mushroom production, substrates with higher carbon/nitrogen ratios, around 66: 1, resulted in higher yields. For seedling production, SMS showed lower efficiency compared to the commercial substrate Carolina Soil®, which also benefited from the addition of the soil conditioner BacSol®. However, after transplanting lettuce seedlings, the formulation containing SMS showed superior results in almost all evaluated parameters. The improvement in the agricultural production through continuous and heavy nutrient input like nitrogen fertilizer under the upland red soil of south China deteriorates soil quality, and this practice in the future could threaten future food production and cause serious environmental problems in China. This research is initiated with the objectives of evaluating the impacts of long-term chemical nitrogen fertilization on soil quality, crop yield, and greenhouse gas emissions, with insights into post-lime application responses. Compared to sole application of chemical nitrogen fertilization, combined application with lime increased soil indicators (pH by 6.30 %-7.76 %, Ca 2+ by 90.06 %-252.77 %, Mg 2+ by 184.47 %-358.05 %, available P by 5.05 %-30.04 %, and soil alkali hydrolysable N by 23.49 %-41.55 %. Combined application of chemical nitrogen fertilization with lime (NPCa (0.59), NPKCa (0.61), and NKCa (0.27) significantly improved soil quality index compared to the sole application of chemical nitrogen fertilization (NP (0.31), NPK (0.36), and NK (0.16). Compared to sole application of chemical nitrogen fertilization, combined application with lime increased grain yield by 48.36 %-61.49 %. Structural equation modeling elucidated that combined application of chemical nitrogen fertilization and lime improved wheat grain yield by improving soil quality. Exchangeable Ca 2+ , exchangeable Mg 2+ , pH, and exchangeable Al 3+ were the most influential factors of wheat grain yield. Overall, the combined application of chemical nitrogen fertilization and lime decreased global warming potential (calculated from N 2 O and CO 2 ) by 16.92 % emissions compared to the sole application of chemical nitrogen fertilization. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been an important tool for population surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to play a key role in monitoring SARS-CoV-2 infection levels following reductions in national clinical testing schemes. Studies measuring decay profiles of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater have underscored the value of WBE, however investigations have been hampered by high biosafety requirements for SARS-CoV-2 infection studies. Therefore, surrogate viruses with lower biosafety standards have been used for SARS-CoV-2 decay studies, such as murine hepatitis virus (MHV), but few studies have directly compared decay rates of both viruses. We compared the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 and MHV in wastewater, using 50 % tissue culture infectious dose (TCID 50 ) and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays to assess infectious virus titre and viral gene markers, respectively. Infectious SARS-CoV-2 and MHV indicate similar endpoints, however observed early decay characteristics differed, with infectious SARS-CoV-2 decaying more rapidly than MHV. We find that MHV is an appropriate infectious virus surrogate for viable SARS-CoV-2, however inconsistencies exist in viral RNA decay parameters, indicating MHV may not be a suitable nucleic acid surrogate across certain temperature regimes. In the last decade, extensive fungal growth has developed in Danish museums parallel to climate change, challenging occupational health and heritage preservation. The growth was unexpected as the museums strived to control relative humidity below 60 %, and it should exceed 75 % to risk growth. A Danish case study found xerophilic Aspergillus species able to grow at low relative humidity in a museum repository. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine whether xerophilic growth from Aspergillus section Restricti has become a novel contaminant nationally distributed in Danish museum repositories striving to control relative humidity according to international environmental recommendations for heritage collections. The study examined The National Museum of Denmark and eight large State Recognized museums distributed throughout Denmark. It was based on 600 swab and tape-lift samples and 60 MAS100-Eco and filter air samples analyzed for fungi with cultivation and morphological identification, Big-Dye-Sanger sequencing, CaM-Nanopore and ITS-Illumina amplicon sequencing. The study showed growth from seven xerophilic Aspergillus species: A. conicus, A. domesticus, A. glabripes, A. halophilicus, A. magnivesiculatus, A. penicilloides, A. vitricola, of which three are new to Denmark, and 13 xerotolerant Aspergillus species. There was no growth from other fungal species. The multiple detection approach provided a broad characterization; however, there was variance in the detected species depending on the analysis approach. Cultivation and Big-Dye Sanger sequencing showed the highest Aspergillus diversity, detecting 17 species; CaM-Nanopore amplicon sequencing detected 12 species; and ITS-illumina amplicon sequencing detected two species but the highest overall diversity. Cultivation, followed by Big-Dye Sanger and CaM-amplicon sequencing, proved the highest compliance. The study concluded that xerophilic Aspergillus growth is nationally distributed and suggests species from Aspergillus section Restricti as a novel contaminant in climate-controlled museum repositories. The characteristics of radon exhalation in the hygroscopic properties of powder solid wastes are immensely significant for environmental safety and their transportation, storage, and landfill. This study detected the radon concentration of superfine cement and five kinds of powder solid waste: fly ash, silica fume, coal gangue, S95 mineral powder, and molybdenum tailing powder, at different hygroscopic times for 1-5 d under 95 % relative humidity. Additionally, the influence of particle size and porosity of solid waste on radon exhalation characteristics was analyzed using a laser particle size analyzer and nitrogen adsorption technology. The results show that the radon exhalation rate of the solid waste was at a low level in dry conditions. Although the presence of water due to the increased moisture absorption rate inhibited the radon exhalation to a certain extent, it was higher than that in dry conditions. The reciprocal of the moisture absorption rate had a strong linear relationship with the ratio between the radon exhalation rate after hygroscopy and radon exhalation rate from dry materials. The pore structure has a significant effect on the exhalation rate of radon, and the macropores inhibits the exhalation rate of radon. Terrestrial ectotherms are vulnerable to climate change since their biological rates depend on the ambient temperature. As temperature may interact with toxicant exposure, climate change may cause unpredictable responses to toxic stress. A population's thermal adaptation will impact its response to temperature change, but also to interactive effects from temperature and toxicants, but these effects are still not fully understood. Here, we assessed the combined effects of exposure to the insecticide imidacloprid across the temperatures 10-25 °C of two populations of the Collembola Hypogastrura viatica (Tullberg, 1872), by determining their responses in multiple life history traits. The con-specific populations differ considerably in thermal adaptations; one (arctic) is a temperature generalist, while the other (temperate) is a warm-adapted specialist. For both populations, the sub-lethal concentrations of imidacloprid became lethal with increasing temperature. Although the thermal maximum is higher for the warm-adapted population, the reduction in survival was stronger. Growth was reduced by imidacloprid in a temperature-dependent manner, but only at the adult life stage. The decrease in adult body size combined with the absence of an effect on the age at first reproduction suggests a selection on the timing of maturation. Egg production was reduced by imidacloprid in both populations, but the negative effect was only dependent on temperature in the warm-adapted population, with no effect at 10 °C, and decreases of 41 % at 15 °C, and 74 % at 20 °C. For several key traits, the population best adapted to utilize high temperatures was also the most sensitive to toxic stress at higher temperatures. It could be that by allocating more energy to faster growth, development, and reproduction at higher temperatures, the population had less energy for maintenance, making it more sensitive to toxic stress.
