This paper presents the initial vicarious radiometric calibration results for Landsat 9 OLI using a combination of ground-based techniques and test sites located in Nevada, California, and South Dakota, USA. The field data collection methods include the traditional reflectance-based approach and the automated Radiometric Calibration Test Site (RadCaTS). The results for top-of-atmosphere spectral radiance show an average ratio (OLI/ground measurements) of 1.03, 1.01, 1.00, 1.02, 1.02, 1.01, 0.98, and 1.01 for Landsat 9 OLI bands 1–8, which is within the design specification of ±5% for spectral radiance. The results for top-of-atmosphere reflectance show an average ratio (OLI/ground measurements) of 0.99, 0.99, 1.00, 1.02, 1.01, 1.02, 1.00, and 1.00 for Landsat 9 OLI bands 1–8, which is within the design specification of ±3% for top-of-atmosphere reflectance. Remote sensing is a very powerful tool that has been used to identify, map and monitor Antarctic features and processes for nearly one century. Satellite remote sensing plays the main role for about the last five decades, as it is the only way to provide multitemporal views at continental scale. But the emergence of small consumer-grade unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the past two decades has paved the way for data in unprecedented detail. This has been also verified by an increasing noticeable interest in Antarctica by the incorporation of UAVs in the field activities in diversified research topics. This paper presents a comprehensive review about the use of UAVs in scientific activities in Antarctica. It is based on the analysis of 190 scientific publications published in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of conferences which are organised into six main application topics: Terrestrial, Ice and Snow, Fauna, Technology, Atmosphere and Others. The analysis encompasses a detailed overview of the activities, identifying advantages and difficulties, also evaluating future possibilities and challenges for expanding the use of UAV in the field activities. The relevance of using UAVs to support numerous and diverse scientific activities in Antarctica becomes very clear after analysing this set of scientific publications, as it is revolutionising the remote acquisition of new data with much higher detail, from inaccessible or difficult to access regions, in faster and cheaper ways. Many of the advances can be seen in the terrestrial areas (detailed 3D mapping; vegetation mapping, discrimination and health assessment; periglacial forms characterisation), ice and snow (more detailed topography, depth and features of ice-sheets, glaciers and sea-ice), fauna (counting penguins, seals and flying birds and detailed morphometrics) and in atmosphere studies (more detailed meteorological measurements and air-surface couplings). This review has also shown that despite the low environmental impact of UAV-based surveys, the increasing number of applications and use, may lead to impacts in the most sensitive Antarctic ecosystems. Hence, we call for an internationally coordinated effort to for planning and sharing UAV data in Antarctica, which would reduce environmental impacts, while extending research outcomes. This paper studies the integration of data collection and offloading for maritime Internet of Things (IoT) systems with multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In the considered multi-UAV maritime IoT system, the UAVs act as the aerial base stations to complete the missions of data collection from buoys and data offloading to the offshore base station (OBS). In this case, the UAVs need to adaptively select the mission mode between data collection and data offloading according to the network resources and mission requirements. In this paper, we aimed to minimize the completion time of data collection and offloading missions for all UAVs by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectories, mission mode selection, transmit power of buoys, and association relationships between the UAVs and buoy/OBS. In order to solve the mixed-integer non-convex minimization problem, we first designed a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning algorithm based on a hybrid discrete and continuous action space to preliminarily obtain the UAV trajectories, mission mode selection, and the transmit power of buoys. Then, we propose an algorithm based on the stable marriage problem to determine the buoy–UAV and UAV–OBS association relationships. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can effectively shorten the total mission completion time of data collection and offloading for the multi-UAV-assisted maritime IoT system. Recently, deep learning-based object detection techniques have arisen alongside time-consuming training and data collection challenges. Although few-shot learning techniques can boost models with few samples to lighten the training load, these approaches still need to be improved when applied to remote-sensing images. Objects in remote-sensing images are often small with an uncertain scale. An insufficient amount of samples would further aggravate this issue, leading to poor detection performance. This paper proposes a Gaussian-scale enhancement (GSE) strategy and a multi-branch patch-embedding attention aggregation (MPEAA) module for cross-scale few-shot object detection to address this issue. With the ongoing changes in global climate, ocean data play a crucial role in understanding the complex variations in the earth system. These variations pose significant challenges to human efforts in addressing the changes. As a data hub for the satellite geodetic technique, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) instill new vitality into ocean data collection due to their flexibility and mobility. At the same time, the dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system is considered a promising technology to empower ubiquitous communication and high-accuracy localization. In this paper, we explore a new fusion of UAV and DFRC to assist data acquisition in the ocean surveillance scenario. The floating buoys transmit uplink data transmission to the UAV with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and attempt to localize the target cooperatively. With the mobility of the UAV and power control at the buoys, the system throughput and the target localization performance can be improved simultaneously. To balance the communication and sensing performance, a two-objective optimization problem is formulated by jointly optimizing the UAV's location and buoy's transmit power to maximize the system throughput and minimize the attainable localization mean-square error. We propose a joint communication and radar-sensing many-objective optimization (CRMOP) algorithm to meliorate the communication and radar-sensing performance simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate that compared with the baseline, the proposed algorithm achieves superior performance in balancing the system throughput and target localization. The majority of planning algorithms used are based on the occupancy grid maps, but in complicated situations, the occupancy grid maps have a significant search overhead. This paper proposed a path planner based on the visibility graph (v-graph) for the mobile robot that uses sparse methods to speed up and simplify the construction of the v-graph. Firstly, the complementary grid framework is designed to reduce graph updating iteration costs during the data collection process in each data frame. Secondly, a filter approach based on the edge length and the number of vertices of the obstacle contour is proposed to reduce redundant nodes and edges in the v-graph. Thirdly, a bidirectional breadth-first search is combined into the path searching process in the proposed fast path planner algorithm in order to reduce the waste of exploring space. Finally, the simulation results indicate that the proposed sparse v-graph planner can significantly improve the efficiency of building the v-graph and reduce the time of path search. In highly convoluted unknown or partially known environments, our method is 40% faster than the FAR Planner and produces paths 25% shorter than it. Moreover, the physical experiment shows that the proposed path planner is faster than the FAR Planner in both the v-graph update process and laser process. Recent years have seen a rapid rise in the generation of high-resolution topographic data using custom-built or commercial-grade Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Though several studies have demonstrated the application potential of UAV data, significant knowledge gaps still exist in terms of proper documentation of protocols for data acquisition, post-flight data processing, error assessments, and their mitigation. This work documents and provides guidelines for UAV data acquisition and processing from several years of field experience in diverse geomorphic settings across India, including undulating topography (~17 km2), alluvial plains (~142 km2), lowland-river basin (~66 km2), and a highly urbanized area (~5 km2). A total of 37,065 images with 16 and 20 Megapixels and 604 ground control points (GCPs) were captured with multiple UAV systems and processed to generate point clouds for a total area of ~230 km2. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for each GCP for all sites ranged from 6.41 cm to 36.54 cm. This manuscript documents a comprehensive guideline for (a) pre-field flight planning and data acquisition, (b) generation and removal of noise and errors of the point cloud, and (c) generation of orthoimages and digital elevation models. We demonstrate that a well-distributed and not necessarily uniformly distributed GCP placement can significantly reduce doming error and other artifacts. We emphasize the need for using separate camera calibration parameters for each flight and demonstrate that errors in camera calibration can significantly impact the accuracy of the point cloud. Accordingly, we have evaluated the stability of lens calibration parameters between consumer-grade and professional cameras and have suggested measures for noise removal in the point cloud data. We have also identified and analyzed various errors during point cloud processing. These include systematic doming errors, errors during orthoimage and DEM generation, and errors related to water bodies. Mitigation strategies for various errors have also been discussed. Finally, we have assessed the accuracy of our point cloud data for different geomorphic settings. We concluded that the accuracy is influenced by Ground Sampling Distance (GSD), topographic features, and the placement, density, and distribution of GCPs. Underwater acoustic channels are characterized by long propagation delay, limited available bandwidth and high energy costs. These unique characteristics bring challenges to design media access control (MAC) protocol for underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs). Especially in data-collection-oriented UASNs, data generated at underwater nodes are transmitted hop-by-hop to the sink node. The traffic loads undertaken by nodes of different depths are different. However, most existing MAC protocols do not consider the traffic load imbalance in data-collection-oriented UASNs, resulting in unfairness in how the nodes transmit their own generated data. In this paper, we propose a novel traffic-aware fair MAC protocol for layered data-collection-oriented UASNs, called TF-MAC. TF-MAC accesses a medium by assigning time slots of different lengths to each layer via different traffic loads to achieve traffic fairness of nodes. To improve throughput and avoid collision in the network, an overlapping time slot division mechanism for different layers and multi-channel allocation scheme within each single layer is employed. Considering the time-varying traffic loads of the nodes, an adaptive packet length algorithm is proposed by taking advantage of the spatial-temporal uncertainty of underwater channels. A sea experiment was conducted to prove the spatial-temporal uncertainty of UASNs, which provides a feasibility basis for the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that TF-MAC can greatly improve the network performance in terms of throughput, delay, energy consumption, and fairness in the layered data-collection-oriented UASNs. UAVs have recently become a very popular tool for acquiring geospatial data. Photographs, films, images, and results of measurements of various sensors from them constitute source material for generating, among other things, photographic documentation, visualisation of places and objects, cartographic materials and 3D models. These models are not only material for the visualisation of objects but are also source material for spatial analysis, including the assessment and analyses of the solar potential of buildings. This research aims to benchmark the feasibility of using UAV-derived data acquired from three sensors, namely the DJI Zenmuse P1 camera, the Share PSDK102S v2 multi-lens camera and the DJI Zenmuse L1 laser scanner. The data from these were acquired for the construction of comprehensive and reliable 3D models, which will form the basis for generating solar potential maps. Various sensors, data storage formats, and geospatial data processing capabilities are analysed to determine the most optimal and efficient solution for providing accurate, complete and reliable 3D models of places and objects for the construction of solar potential maps. In this paper, the authors prepare a compilation of the results of the studies from different measurement combinations and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the different solutions, as well as the integration of the results for an optimal 3D model, which was used to perform solar potential analyses for the selected built-up area. The results of the study show that the parameters for assessing the quality of a 3D model can be statistical parameters that determine the coplanarity of roof slope points (i.e., standard deviation, distances from the plane, and RMS value). Accurate and highly precise gravity gradient data are an important component of, for example, gravity field modeling, seabed topography inversion, and resource exploration. However, high-precision gravity gradient data are difficult to obtain. To address this difficulty, this work introduces the Fourier series expansion method to the modeling of gravity gradient fields. Based on gravity anomalies, the analytic expressions of the gravity gradient tensors have been deduced, which provides a new mathematical method for obtaining gravity gradient data. The expression's derivation and verification processes are as follows. First, these analytic expressions for inverting the gravity gradient based on gravity anomaly data are derived according to the Laplace equation, the boundary value conditions of spherical approximation, and the Fourier series expansion method. Then, global 1' × 1' gravity field data provided by UCSD are used to verify the accuracy of these formulas. Finally, the results are analyzed. The experimental results show that the results obtained based on this inversion formula can sufficiently show the details of gravity gradient changes. The formulas derived in this paper have good computational efficiency in the inversion of regional gravity gradients and provide a new mathematical method for gravity gradient data acquisition. Cross-spectral local feature matching between visual and thermal images benefits many vision tasks in low-light environments, including image-to-image fusion and camera re-localization. An essential prerequisite for unleashing the potential of supervised deep learning algorithms in the area of visible–thermal matching is the availability of large-scale and high-quality annotated datasets. However, publicly available datasets are either in relative small quantity scales or have limited pose annotations due to the expensive cost of data acquisition and annotation, which severely hinders the development of this field. In this paper, we proposed a multi-view thermal–visible image dataset for large-scale cross-spectral matching. We first recovered a 3D reference model from a group of collected RGB images, in which a certain image (bridge) shares almost the same pose as the thermal query. We then effectively registered the thermal image to the model based on manually annotating a 2D-2D tie point between the bridge and the thermal. In this way, through simply annotating one same viewpoint image pair, numerous overlapping image pairs between thermal and visible could be available. We also proposed a semi-automatic approach for generating accurate supervision for training multi-view cross-spectral matching. Specifically, our dataset consists of 40,644 cross-modal pairs with well supervision, covering multiple complex scenes. In addition, we also provided the camera metadata, 3D reference model, depth map of the visible images and 6-DoF pose of all images. We extensively evaluated the performance of state-of-the-art algorithms on our dataset and provided a comprehensive analysis of the results. We will publish our dataset and pre-processing code. Technological progress in Virtual Reality (VR) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) offers great advantages in the field of cartography and particularly in the geovisualization of spatial data. This paper investigates the correlation between UAS flight characteristics for data acquisition and the quality of the derived maps and 3D models of geological monuments for VR geovisualization in different scales and timeframes. In this study, we develop a methodology for mapping geoheritage monuments based on different cartographic scales. Each cartographic scale results in diverse orthophotomaps and 3D models. All orthophotomaps and 3D models provide an optimal geovisualization, combining UAS and VR technologies and thus contributing to the multitemporal 3D geovisualization of geological heritage on different cartographic scales. The study area selected was a fossilite ferrous site located in Lesvos Geopark, UNESCO. The study area contains a fossil site surrounding various findings. The three distinct scales that occur are based on the object depicted: (i) the fossilite ferrous site (1:120), (ii) the fossil root system (1:20), and (iii) individual fossils (≥1:10). The methodology followed in the present research consists of three main sections: (a) scale-variant UAS data acquisition, (b) data processing and results (2D–3D maps and models), and (c) 3D geovisualization to VR integration. Each different mapping scale determines the UAS data acquisition parameters (flight pattern, camera orientation and inclination, height of flight) and defines the resolution of the 3D models to be embedded in the VR environment. Due to the intense excavation of the study area, the location was spatiotemporally monitored on the cartographic scale of 1:120. For the continuous monitoring of the study area, four different UASs were also used. Each of them was programmed to fly and acquire images with a constant ground sampling distance (GSD). The data were processed by image-based 3D modeling and computer vision algorithms from which the 3D models and orthophotomaps were created and used in the VR environment. With the rapid development of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, the technique that utilizes multiple two-dimensional (2-D) SAR images with different view angles to extract three-dimensional (3-D) coordinates of targets has gained wide concern in recent years. Unlike the traditional multi-channel SAR utilized for 3-D coordinate extraction, the single-channel curvilinear SAR (CLSAR) has the advantages of large variation of view angle, requiring fewer acquisition data, and lower device cost. However, due to the complex aerodynamic configuration and flight characteristics, important issues should be considered, including the mathematical model establishment, imaging geometry analysis, and high-precision extraction model design. In this paper, to address these challenges, a 3-D vector model of CLSAR was presented and the imaging geometries under different view angles were analyzed. Then, a novel 3-D coordinate extraction approach based on radargrammetry was proposed, in which the unique property of the SAR system, called cylindrical symmetry, was utilized to establish a novel extraction model. Compared with the conventional approach, the proposed one has fewer constraints on the trajectory of radar platform, requires fewer model parameters, and can obtain higher extraction accuracy without the assistance of extra ground control points (GCPs). Compressed sensing (CS) has been widely used in hyperspectral (HS) imaging to obtain hyperspectral data at a sub-Nyquist sampling rate, lifting the efficiency of data acquisition. Yet, reconstructing the acquired HS data via iterative algorithms is time consuming, which hinders the real-time application of compressed HS imaging. To alleviate this problem, this paper makes the first attempt to adopt convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to reconstruct three-dimensional compressed HS data by backtracking the entire imaging process, leading to a simple yet effective network, dubbed the backtracking reconstruction network (BTR-Net). Concretely, we leverage the divide-and-conquer method to divide the imaging process based on coded aperture tunable filter (CATF) spectral imager into steps, and build a subnetwork for each step to specialize in its reverse process. Consequently, BTR-Net introduces multiple built-in networks which performs spatial initialization, spatial enhancement, spectral initialization and spatial–spectral enhancement in an independent and sequential manner. Extensive experiments show that BTR-Net can reconstruct compressed HS data quickly and accurately, which outperforms leading iterative algorithms both quantitatively and visually, while having superior resistance to noise. The development of low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and light weight imaging sensors has resulted in significant interest in their use for remote sensing applications. While significant attention has been paid to the collection, calibration, registration and mosaicking of data collected from small UAVs, the interpretation of these data into semantically meaningful information can still be a laborious task. A standard data collection and classification work-flow requires significant manual effort for segment size tuning, feature selection and rule-based classifier design. In this paper, we propose an alternative learning-based approach using feature learning to minimise the manual effort required. We apply this system to the classification of invasive weed species. Small UAVs are suited to this application, as they can collect data at high spatial resolutions, which is essential for the classification of small or localised weed outbreaks. In this paper, we apply feature learning to generate a bank of image filters that allows for the extraction of features that discriminate between the weeds of interest and background objects. These features are pooled to summarise the image statistics and form the input to a texton-based linear classifier that classifies an image patch as weed or background. We evaluated our approach to weed classification on three weeds of significance in Australia: water hyacinth, tropical soda apple and serrated tussock. Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been broadly applied to the remote sensing field. For a great number of UAV images, deep learning has been reinvigorated and performed many results in agricultural applications. The popular image datasets for deep learning model training are generated for general purpose use, in which the objects, views, and applications are for ordinary scenarios. However, UAV images possess different patterns of images mostly from a look-down perspective. This paper provides a verified annotated dataset of UAV images that are described in data acquisition, data preprocessing, and a showcase of a CNN classification. The dataset collection consists of one multi-rotor UAV platform by flying a planned scouting routine over rice paddies. This paper introduces a semi-auto annotation method with an ExGR index to generate the training data of rice seedlings. For demonstration, this study modified a classical CNN architecture, VGG-16, to run a patch-based rice seedling detection. The k-fold cross-validation was employed to obtain an 80/20 dividing ratio of training/test data. The accuracy of the network increases with the increase of epoch, and all the divisions of the cross-validation dataset achieve a 0.99 accuracy. Owing to their dynamic and multidisciplinary characteristics, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, have become increasingly popular. However, the civil applications of this technology, particularly for traffic data collection and analysis, still need to be thoroughly explored. For this purpose, the authors previously proposed a detailed methodological framework for the automated UAV video processing in order to extract multi-vehicle trajectories at a particular road segment. In this paper, however, the main emphasis is on the comprehensive analysis of vehicle trajectories extracted via a UAV-based video processing framework. An analytical methodology is presented for: (i) the automatic identification of flow states and shockwaves based on processed UAV trajectories, and (ii) the subsequent extraction of various traffic parameters and performance indicators in order to study flow conditions at a signalized intersection. The experimental data to analyze traffic flow conditions was obtained in the city of Sint-Truiden, Belgium. The generation of simplified trajectories, shockwaves, and fundamental diagrams help in analyzing the interrupted-flow conditions at a signalized four-legged intersection using UAV-acquired data. The analysis conducted on such data may serve as a benchmark for the actual traffic-specific applications of the UAV-acquired data. The results reflect the value of flexibility and bird-eye view provided by UAV videos; thereby depicting the overall applicability of the UAV-based traffic analysis system. Antarctica is covered by a thick ice sheet, and the application of geophysical methods is necessary to image the subglacial structures for studying the hydrologic systems and tectonic deformations in the Antarctic continent. The magnetotelluric (MT) method is one of the best approaches to obtain the subglacial electrical resistivities. However, only a very small volume of data has been collected so far in Antarctica using this method. In this paper, we report on a broadband MT profile collected at 10 sites in the south of the Chinese Zhongshan Station at Prydz Bay, and a 3D resistivity model was constructed by inversion of these data. This 3D model shows two low resistivity zones at a depth shallower than 6 km. They are consistent with the low-velocity zones in the previous shear-wave model and can be interpreted as the result of interconnected fluids associated with a downward migration of subglacial water. In addition, a distinct eastward dipping low resistivity zoneis present in the crust, which extends from the top surface to the lower crust. Since its location coincides with the highly positive magnetization named Amery Lineament, it is proposed that this eastward dipping low resistivity zoneextending in the entire crust probably reveals the geometry structure of the Amery Lineament at depth. Besides, it can be inferred from this new 3D resistivity model that the Amery Lineament is at least a crustal-scale structure, which probably outcrops on the land surface but was covered by the ice sheets in the study area. Automated progress monitoring of construction sites using cameras has been proposed in recent years. Although previous studies have tried to identify the most informative camera views according to 4D BIM to optimize installation plans, video collection using fixed or pan-tilt-zoom cameras is still limited by their inability to adapt to the dynamic construction environment. Therefore, considerable attention has been paid to using camera-equipped unmanned aerial vehicles (CE-UAVs), which provide mobility for the camera, allowing it to fit its field of view automatically to the important parts of the construction site while avoiding occlusions. However, previous studies on optimizing video collection with CE-UAV are limited to the scanning of static objects on construction sites. Given the growing interest in construction activities, the existing methods are inadequate to meet the requirements for the collection of high-quality videos. In this study, the following requirements for and constraints on collecting construction-activity videos have been identified: (1) the FOV should be optimized to cover the areas of interest with the minimum possible occlusion; (2) the path of the UAV should be optimized to allow efficient data collection on multiple construction activities over a large construction site, considering the locations of activities at specific times; and (3) the data collection should consider the requirements for CV processes. Aiming to address these requirements and constraints, a method has been proposed to perform simulation-based optimization of path planning for CE-UAVs to allow automated and effective collection of videos of construction activities based on a detailed 4D simulation that includes a micro-schedule and the corresponding workspaces. This method can identify the most informative views of the workspaces and the optimal path for data capture. A case study was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The topic of this paper is the airborne evaluation of ICESat-2 Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) measurement capabilities and surface-height-determination over crevassed glacial terrain, with a focus on the geodetical accuracy of geophysical data collected from a helicopter. To obtain surface heights over crevassed and otherwise complex ice surface, ICESat-2 data are analyzed using the density-dimension algorithm for ice surfaces (DDA-ice), which yields surface heights at the nominal 0.7 m along-track spacing of ATLAS data. As the result of an ongoing surge, Negribreen, Svalbard, provided an ideal situation for the validation objectives in 2018 and 2019, because many different crevasse types and morphologically complex ice surfaces existed in close proximity. Airborne geophysical data, including laser altimeter data (profilometer data at 905 nm frequency), differential Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data, on-board-time-lapse imagery and photographs, were collected during two campaigns in summers of 2018 and 2019. Airborne experiment setup, geodetical correction and data processing steps are described here. To date, there is relatively little knowledge of the geodetical accuracy that can be obtained from kinematic data collection from a helicopter. Our study finds that (1) Kinematic GPS data collection with correction in post-processing yields higher accuracies than Real-Time-Kinematic (RTK) data collection. (2) Processing of only the rover data using the Natural Resources Canada Spatial Reference System Precise Point Positioning (CSRS-PPP) software is sufficiently accurate for the sub-satellite validation purpose. (3) Distances between ICESat-2 ground tracks and airborne ground tracks were generally better than 25 m, while distance between predicted and actual ICESat-2 ground track was on the order of 9 m, which allows direct comparison of ice-surface heights and spatial statistical characteristics of crevasses from the satellite and airborne measurements. (4) The Lasertech Universal Laser System (ULS), operated at up to 300 m above ground level, yields full return frequency (400 Hz) and 0.06–0.08 m on-ice along-track spacing of height measurements. (5) Cross-over differences of airborne laser altimeter data are −0.172 ± 2.564 m along straight paths, which implies a precision of approximately 2.6 m for ICESat-2 validation experiments in crevassed terrain. (6) In summary, the comparatively light-weight experiment setup of a suite of small survey equipment mounted on a Eurocopter (Helicopter AS-350) and kinematic GPS data analyzed in post-processing using CSRS-PPP leads to high accuracy repeats of the ICESat-2 tracks. The technical results (1)–(6) indicate that direct comparison of ice-surface heights and crevasse depths from the ICESat-2 and airborne laser altimeter data is warranted. Numerical evaluation of height comparisons utilizes spatial surface roughness measures. The final result of the validation is that ICESat-2 ATLAS data, analyzed with the DDA-ice, facilitate surface-height determination over crevassed terrain, in good agreement with airborne data, including spatial characteristics, such as surface roughness, crevasse spacing and depth, which are key informants on the deformation and dynamics of a glacier during surge. Band selection (BS) is one of the important topics in hyperspectral image (HSI) processing. Many types of BS algorithms were proposed in the last decade. However, most of them were designed for off-line use. They can only be used with pre-collected data, and are sometimes ineffective for applications that require timeliness, such as disaster prevention or target detection. This paper proposes an online BS method that allows us obtain instant BS results in a progressive manner during HSI data transmission, which is carried out under band-interleaved-by-sample/pixel (BIS/BIP) format. Such a revolutionary method is called progressive sample processing of band selection (PSP-BS). In PSP-BS, BS can be done recursively pixel by pixel, so that the instantaneous BS can be achieved without waiting for all the pixels of an image. To develop a PSP-BS algorithm, we proposed PSP-OMPBS, which adopted the recursive version of a self-sparse regression BS method (OMPBS) as a native algorithm. The experiments conducted on two real hyperspectral images demonstrate that PSP-OMPBS can progressively output the BS with extremely low computing time. In addition, the convergence of BS results during transmission can be further accelerated by using a pre-defined pixel transmission sequence. Such a significant advantage not only allows BS to be done in a real-time manner for the future satellite data downlink, but also determines the BS results in advance, without waiting to receive every pixel of an image. In response to the global megatrends of digitalization and transportation automation, Turku University of Applied Sciences has developed a test platform to advance autonomous maritime operations. This platform includes the unmanned surface vessel eM/S Salama and a remote operations center, both of which are detailed in this article. The article highlights the importance of collecting and annotating multi-modal sensor data from the vessel. These data are vital for developing deep learning algorithms that enhance situational awareness and guide autonomous navigation. By securing relevant data from maritime environments, we aim to enhance the autonomous features of unmanned surface vessels using deep learning techniques. The annotated sensor data will be made available for further research through open access. An image dataset, which includes synthetically generated weather conditions, is published alongside this article. While existing maritime datasets predominantly rely on RGB cameras, our work underscores the need for multi-modal data to advance autonomous capabilities in maritime applications. Overhead catenary system (OCS) automatic detection is of important significance for the safe operation and maintenance of electrified railways. The vehicle-borne mobile mapping system (VMMS) may significantly improve the data acquisition. This paper proposes a VMMS-based framework to realize the automatic detection and modelling of OCS. The proposed framework performed semantic segmentation, model reconstruction and geometric parameters detection based on LiDAR point cloud using VMMS. Firstly, an enhanced VMMS is designed for accurate data generation. Secondly, an automatic searching method based on a two-level stereo frame is designed to filter the irrelevant non-OCS point cloud. Then, a deep learning network based on multi-scale feature fusion and an attention mechanism (MFF_A) is trained for semantic segmentation on a catenary facility. Finally, the 3D modelling is performed based on the OCS segmentation result, and geometric parameters are then extracted. The experimental case study was conducted on a 100 km high-speed railway in Guangxi, China. The experimental results show that the proposed framework has a better accuracy of 96.37%, outperforming other state-of-art methods for segmentation. Compared with traditional manual laser measurement, the proposed framework can achieve a trustable accuracy within 10 mm for OCS geometric parameter detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Complex-terrain clutter presents serious nonuniformity, which has a significant impact on radar target detection, communication, and navigation. The accurate acquisition of the clutter characteristics by measurement or calculation for large and complex terrains has always posed a challenge due to the high costs of the measurement, as well as the intricate and diverse environmental factors. To address this challenge, we proposed a research methodology that leverages the similarity of multidimensional terrain features to infer the clutter characteristics of unmeasured regions, particularly those that are difficult or impossible to measure directly. In order to realize this study object, we constructed a dataset consisting of multidimensional environmental and clutter data to quantitatively characterize the complex environmental information in a vast territory. Within the dataset, we selected two regions with similar terrain characteristics: one region served as the source data for mining and analyzing features, while the other was designated as the target data region for method validation. Through the application of prior-knowledge-based classification and multifactor weight analysis on the dataset, two novel estimation techniques were devised. The first method, designated as PCKRF, blended prior-knowledge classification, weighted K-means clustering, and the random forest (RF) algorithm; and the second method, labeled PCKMW, integrated prior-knowledge classification, weighted K-means clustering, and the minimum weighted distance (MW) approach. In estimating and validating the clutter data from the source region to the target region, the performances of both the PCKRF and PCKMW methods were notably superior to those of the RF, MW, and K-means minimum weighting (KMW). Specifically, the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) was enhanced from a range of 7 dB–10 dB to a range of 4 dB–6 dB, while the determination coefficient (R2) was increased from a range of −1.15–0.09 to a range of 0.25–0.66. The above demonstration illustrates that the current achievements in the clutter estimation methods offer a viable option for accurately recognizing clutter characteristics in complex-terrain environments where comprehensive data collection may be difficult or impossible, with lower human and economic costs. Lake ice thickness (LIT) is one of the key climate variables in the lake ice domain, but there are currently large uncertainties in the retrieval of LIT. We present and validate a new LIT retrieval method that utilizes ICESat-2 data to assist CryoSat-2 echo peak selection, aiming to improve the accuracy of LIT retrieval and enable data acquisition without on-site measurements. The method involves screening out similar ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 tracks based on time and space constraints. It also involves dynamically adjusting the range constraint window of CryoSat-2 waveforms based on the high-precision lake ice surface ellipsoid height obtained from ICESat-2/ATL06 data. Within this range constraint window, the peak selection strategy is used to determine the scattering interfaces between snow-ice and ice-water. By utilizing the distance between the scattering horizons, the thickness of the lake ice can be determined. We performed the ice thickness retrieval experiment for Baker Lake in winter and verified it against the on-site measurement data. The results showed that the accuracy was about 0.143 m. At the same time, we performed the ice thickness retrieval experiment for Great Bear Lake (GBL), which does not have on-site measurement data, and compared it with the climate change trend of GBL. An urban environment defines a specific micro-climate which directly affects the quality of life in urbanized areas and often has a negative impact on urban populations. Phenomena like urban heat and surface heat islands are direct products of an urban lifestyle. Urban meteorological networks (UMNs) are a tool that can help to better understand and analyze the current situation and make the right decisions about future urban development. Deployed to monitor and record different objects and their states inside urban areas, UMNs build a long-term meteorological data time series database. The most commonly used systems for achieving this goal include wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This paper presents a combined experience in deploying three different WSN systems. During seven years of research in this field, the authors have recognized the importance of data reliability in data acquisition. More importantly, due to the lack of research addressing the reliability of the data received from WSNs by the core segment of the server (processes used in receiving, validating, parsing, and storing data into a database instance), the received data are used in scientific studies without questioning their reliability. To determine the possibility of shifting information provided by the data measured from sensor networks before it is stored in a desired form of database, this paper proposes a highly reliable socket server model. The model is built with high reliability and performance in mind and it includes three major processes, which use a combination of signals and control messages to pass information about their states. A case study is performed using high-end hardware, running a Linux operating system stressed to its limits. Repetition testing revealed inconsistency in the information provided by the operating system to the application layer, which could lead to the loss of information about short-term and rarely occurring monitored objects. The results lead to the conclusion that there is a clear need for a higher level of data reliability in the process of data acquisition by UMNs. This paper focuses on the development of a miniaturized mobile mapping platform with advantages over current agricultural phenotyping systems in terms of acquiring data that facilitate under-canopy plant trait extraction. The system is based on an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for in-row, under-canopy data acquisition to deliver accurately georeferenced 2D and 3D products. The paper addresses three main aspects pertaining to the UGV development: (a) architecture of the UGV mobile mapping system (MMS), (b) quality assessment of acquired data in terms of georeferencing information as well as derived 3D point cloud, and (c) ability to derive phenotypic plant traits using data acquired by the UGV MMS. The experimental results from this study demonstrate the ability of the UGV MMS to acquire dense and accurate data over agricultural fields that would facilitate highly accurate plant phenotyping (better than above-canopy platforms such as unmanned aerial systems and high-clearance tractors). The benefits of tree canopy in urban and suburban landscapes are increasingly well known: stormwater runoff control, air-pollution mitigation, temperature regulation, carbon storage, wildlife habitat, neighborhood cohesion, and other social indicators of quality of life. However, many urban areas lack high-resolution tree canopy maps that document baseline conditions or inform tree-planting programs, limiting effective study and management. This paper describes a GEOBIA approach to tree-canopy mapping that relies on existing public investments in LiDAR, multispectral imagery, and thematic GIS layers, thus eliminating or reducing data acquisition costs. This versatile approach accommodates datasets of varying content and quality, first using LiDAR derivatives to identify aboveground features and then a combination of LiDAR and imagery to differentiate trees from buildings and other anthropogenic structures. Initial tree canopy objects are then refined through contextual analysis, morphological smoothing, and small-gap filling. Case studies from locations in the United States and Canada show how a GEOBIA approach incorporating data fusion and enterprise processing can be used for producing high-accuracy, high-resolution maps for large geographic extents. These maps are designed specifically for practical application by planning and regulatory end users who expect not only high accuracy but also high realism and visual coherence. Relationships between biophysical parameters and radiometric data have been tested and evaluated by several professionals using empirical and/or physical approaches. Remote sensing data collected from airborne or orbital platforms are, of course, influenced by different factors, such as illumination/observation geometry (data collection geometry), atmospheric effects, etc., rather than by target spectral properties. Besides that, the target topographic positioning actually defines the amount of incident energy, as well as the amount of energy that is reflected toward the sensor. The sum of both data collection geometry and topographic positioning defines the so-called "local illumination". The objective of this paper was to evaluate the influence of local illumination on empirical relationships between a biophysical variable (plant area index, PAI) and two vegetation indices calculated from Resourcesat/Linear Imaging Self-Scanner sensor (LISS-3) orbital data. Local illumination was expressed by the cosine factor (Fcos) and calculated from topographic and solar position data at three different dates. The study area was based on a typical Brazilian southeastern forest fragment located in the Augusto Ruschi municipal preservation park dispersed on roughhouse topography. PAI was estimated by hemispherical photographs taken under the forest canopy from sample points arbitrarily dispersed on the forest fragment. In recent years, the interest in semi-supervised learning has increased, combining supervised and unsupervised learning approaches. This is especially valid for classification applications in remote sensing, while the data acquisition rate in current systems has become fairly large considering high- and very-high resolution data; yet on the other hand, the process of obtaining the ground truth data may be cumbersome for such large repositories. In this paper, we investigate the application of semi-supervised learning approaches and particularly focus on the small sample size problem. To that extend, we consider two basic unsupervised approaches by enlarging the initial labeled training set as well as an ensemble-based self-training method. We propose different strategies within self-training on how to select more reliable candidates from the pool of unlabeled samples to speed-up the learning process and to improve the classification performance of the underlying classifier ensemble. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed semi-supervised learning approach over polarimetric SAR data. Results show that the proposed self-training approach using an ensemble-based classifier that is initially trained over a small training set can achieve a similar performance level of a fully supervised learning approach where the training is performed over significantly larger labeled data. Considering the difficulties of the manual data labeling in such massive volumes of SAR repositories, this is indeed a promising accomplishment for semi-supervised SAR classification. Digital elevation models derived from airborne laser scanning have found worldwide application in archaeology and other disciplines. A key feature that makes these models so valuable lies in their capacity to represent micro-relief features indicating traces of past human activity. While detection of these often faint traces in vegetated areas benefits from maximum leaf-off conditions during data acquisition, countrywide collection of data must make compromises and often cannot take place in the most appropriate seasons. In this paper, we identify the impact of leaf-on conditions on the distribution of ground returns and present what types of archaeological objects might remain unnoticeable if the flight date is outside the desirable time window. Comparing five ALS data acquisition campaigns from both leaf-off (April and November) and leaf-on conditions (May and June), we demonstrate how foliage affects the morphology of relief features as recorded in ALS derivatives, and we identify other effects on archaeological interpretation caused by changing vegetation conditions. Digital Twin (DT) plays a crucial role in intelligent bridge management, and the geometric DT (gDT) serves as its foundation. Notably, the fast and high-precision generation of bridge gDT models has gained increasing attention. This research presents a method for generating high-precision and fast RC bridges with chambers for gDT using terrestrial laser scanning. The method begins with a proposed fast point cloud data collection technique designed specifically for bridges with internal chambers. Subsequently, Euclidean clustering and grid segmentation algorithms are developed to automatically extract contour features from the sliced point clouds. Finally, a framework based on the Dynamo–Revit reverse modelling method is introduced, enabling the automatic generation of gDT models from the identified point cloud features. To validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method, a concrete variable section bridge is used. A comparison is made between the generated gDT model and the point cloud model in terms of 3D deviation, revealing a maximum deviation of 6.6 mm and an average deviation of 3 mm. The effectiveness of training-based object detection heavily depends on the amount of sample data. But in the field of remote sensing, the amount of sample data is difficult to meet the needs of network training due to the non-cooperative imaging modes and complex imaging conditions. Moreover, the imbalance of the sample data between different categories may lead to the long-tail problem during the training. Given that similar sensors, data acquisition approaches, and data structures could make the targets in different categories possess certain similarities, those categories can be modeled together within a subspace rather than the entire space to leverage the amounts of sample data in different subspaces. To this end, a subspace-dividing strategy and a subspace-based multi-branch network is proposed for object detection in remotely sensed images. Specifically, a combination index is defined to depict this kind of similarity, a generalized category consisting of similar categories is proposed to represent the subspace, and a new subspace-based loss function is devised to address the relationship between targets in one subspace and across different subspaces to integrate the sample data from similar categories within a subspace and to balance the amounts of sample data between different subspaces. Furthermore, a subspace-based multi-branch network is constructed to ensure the subspace-aware regression. SAR sensors are usually used in the offshore domain to detect marine oil slicks which allows the authorities to guide cleanup operations or prosecute polluters. As radar imagery can be used any time of day or year and in almost any weather conditions, the use and programming of such remote sensing data is usually favored over optical imagery. Nevertheless, images collected in the optical domain provide access to key information not accessible today by SAR instruments, such as the thickness or the amount of pollutant. To address this knowledge gap, a methodology based on the joint use of a scattering model (U-WCA) and remote sensing data collected by a low frequency (e.g., L-band) imaging radar over controlled release of mineral oil spill is reported in this paper. The proposed method allows estimation of the concentration of pollutant within an oil-in-water mixture as well as the temporal variation of this quantity due to weathering processes. Snapshot Compressive Imaging is an emerging technology that is based on compressive sensing theory to achieve high-efficiency hyperspectral data acquisition. The core problem of this technology is how to reconstruct 3D hyperspectral data from the 2D snapshot measurement in a fast and high-quality manner. In this paper, we propose a novel deep network, which consists of the symmetric residual module and the non-local spatial-spectral attention module, to learn the reconstruction mapping in a data-driven way. The symmetric residual module uses symmetric residual connections to improve the potential of interaction between convolution operations and further promotes the fusion of local features. The non-local spatial-spectral attention module is designed to capture the non-local spatial-spectral correlation in the hyperspectral image. Specifically, this module calculates the channel attention matrix to capture the global correlations between all of the spectral channels, and it fuses the channel attention attained feature maps and the spatial attention weighted features as the module output, thus both of the spatial-spectral correlations of hyperspectral images can be fully utilized for reconstruction. In addition, a compound loss, including the reconstruction loss, the measurement loss, and the cosine loss, is designed to guide the end-to-end network learning. We experimentally evaluate the proposed method on simulation and real datasets. In the field of digital cultural heritage (DCH), 2D/3D digitization strategies are becoming more and more complex. The emerging trend of multimodal imaging (i.e., data acquisition campaigns aiming to put in cooperation multi-sensor, multi-scale, multi-band and/or multi-epochs concurrently) implies several challenges in term of data provenance, data fusion and data analysis. Making the assumption that the current usability of multi-source 3D models could be more meaningful than millions of aggregated points, this work explores a "reduce to understand" approach to increase the interpretative value of multimodal point clouds. Starting from several years of accumulated digitizations on a single use-case, we define a method based on density estimation to compute a Multimodal Enhancement Fusion Index (MEFI) revealing the intricate modality layers behind the 3D coordinates. Seamlessly stored into point cloud attributes, MEFI is able to be expressed as a heat-map if the underlying data are rather isolated and sparse or redundant and dense. Beyond the colour-coded quantitative features, a semantic layer is added to provide qualitative information from the data sources. Based on a versatile descriptive metadata schema (MEMoS), the 3D model resulting from the data fusion could therefore be semantically enriched by incorporating all the information concerning its digitization history. Indoor pedestrian localization has been the subject of a great deal of recent research. Various studies have employed pedestrian dead reckoning, which determines pedestrian positions by transforming data collected through sensors into pedestrian gait information. Although several studies have recently applied deep learning to moving object distance estimations using naturally collected everyday life data, this data collection approach requires a long time, resulting in a lack of data for specific labels or a significant data imbalance problem for specific labels. In this study, to compensate for the problems of the existing PDR, a method based on transfer learning and data augmentation is proposed for estimating moving object distances for pedestrians. Consistent high-performance moving object distance estimation is achieved using only a small training dataset, and the problem of the concentration of training data only on labels within a certain range is solved using window warping and scaling methods. The training dataset consists of the three-axes values of the accelerometer sensor and the pedestrian's movement speed calculated based on GPS coordinates. All data and GPS coordinates are collected through the smartphone. A performance evaluation of the proposed moving pedestrian distance estimation system shows a high distance error performance of 3.59 m with only approximately 17% training data compared to other moving object distance estimation techniques. Passive acoustics are widely used to monitor the presence of dolphins in the marine environment. This study aims to introduce a low-cost and homemade approach for assembling a complete underwater microphone (i.e., the hydrophone), employing cheap and easy to obtain components. The hydrophone was assembled with two piezo disks connected in a balanced configuration and encased in a plastic container filled with plastic foam. The hydrophone's performance was validated by direct comparison with the commercially available AS-1 hydrophone (Aquarian Hydrophones, Anacortes, U.S.) on different underwater acoustic signals: artificial acoustic signals (ramp and multitone signals) and various dolphin vocalizations (whistle, echolocation clicks, and burst pulse signals). The sensitivity of the device's performance to changes in the emission source position was also tested. The results of the validation procedure on both artificial signals and real dolphin vocalizations showed that the significant cost savings associated with cheap technology had a minimal effect on the recording device's performance within the frequency range of 0–35 kHz. At this stage of experimentation, the global cost of the hydrophone could be estimated at a few euros, making it extremely price competitive when compared to more expensive commercially available models. In the future, this effective and low-cost technology would allow for continuous monitoring of the presence of free-ranging dolphins, significantly lowering the total cost of autonomous monitoring systems. Increased exposure to artificial light at night can affect human health including disruption of melatonin production and circadian rhythms which can extend to increased risks of hormonal cancers and other serious diseases. In addition, multiple negative impacts on fauna and flora are well documented, and it is a matter of fact that artificial light at night is a nuisance for ground-based astronomy. These impacts are frequently linked to the colour of the light or more specifically to its spectral content. Artificial light at night is often mapped by using spaceborne sensors, but most of them are panchromatic and thus insensitive to the colour. In this paper, we suggest a method that allows high-resolution mapping of the artificial light at night by using ground-based measurements with the LANcube system. The newly developed device separates the light detected in four bands (Red, Green, Blue and Clear) and provides this information for six faces of a cube. We found relationships between the LANcube's colour ratios and (1) the Melatonin Suppression Index, (2) the StarLight Index and (3) the Induced Photosynthesis Index. We show how such relationships combined with data acquisition from a LANcube positioned on the top of a car can be used to produce spectral indices maps of a whole city in a few hours. Oil spill detection and mapping (OSPM) is an extremely relevant issue from a scientific point of view due to the environmental impact on coastal and marine ecosystems. In this study, we present a new approach to assess scientific literature for the past 50 years. In this sense, our study aims to perform a bibliometric and network analysis using a literature review on the application of OSPM to assess researchers and trends in this field of science. In methodological terms we used the Scopus base to search for articles in the literature, then we used bibliometric tools to access information and reveal quantifying patterns in this field of literature. Our results suggest that the detection of oil in the sea has undergone a great evolution in the last decades and there is a strong relationship between the technological evolution aimed at detection with the improvement of remote sensing data acquisition methods. The most relevant contributions in this field of science involved countries such as China, the United States, and Canada. In general, early detection and timely management of plant diseases are essential for reducing yield loss. Traditional manual inspection of fields is often time-consuming and laborious. Automated imaging techniques have recently been successfully applied to detect plant diseases. However, these methods mostly focus on the current state of the crop. This paper proposes a gated recurrent unit (GRU)-based model to predict soybean sudden death syndrome (SDS) disease development. To detect SDS at a quadrat level, the proposed method uses satellite images collected from PlanetScope as the training set. The pixel image data include the spectral bands of red, green, blue and near-infrared (NIR). Data collected during the 2016 and 2017 soybean-growing seasons were analyzed. Instead of using individual static imagery, the GRU-based model converts the original imagery into time-series data. SDS predictions were made on different data scenarios and the results were compared with fully connected deep neural network (FCDNN) and XGBoost methods. The overall test accuracy of classifying healthy and diseased quadrates in all methods was above 76%. The test accuracy of the FCDNN and XGBoost were 76.3–85.5% and 80.6–89.2%, respectively, while the test accuracy of the GRU-based model was 82.5–90.4%. The calculation results show that the proposed method can improve the detection accuracy by up to 7% with time-series imagery. High-throughput phenotyping using high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution remote sensing (RS) data has become a critical part of the plant breeding chain focused on reducing the time and cost of the selection process for the "best" genotypes with respect to the trait(s) of interest. In this paper, the potential of accurate and reliable sorghum biomass prediction using visible and near infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral data as well as light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data acquired by sensors mounted on UAV platforms is investigated. Predictive models are developed using classical regression-based machine learning methods for nine experiments conducted during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons at the Agronomy Center for Research and Education (ACRE) at Purdue University, Indiana, USA. The impact of the regression method, data source, timing of RS and field-based biomass reference data acquisition, and the number of samples on the prediction results are investigated. R2 values for end-of-season biomass ranged from 0.64 to 0.89 for different experiments when features from all the data sources were included. Geometry-based features derived from the LiDAR point cloud to characterize plant structure and chemistry-based features extracted from hyperspectral data provided the most accurate predictions. Evaluation of the impact of the time of data acquisition during the growing season on the prediction results indicated that although the most accurate and reliable predictions of final biomass were achieved using remotely sensed data from mid-season to end-of-season, predictions in mid-season provided adequate results to differentiate between promising varieties for selection. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the accuracies of the predictive models showed that both the data source and regression method are important factors for a reliable prediction; however, the data source was more important with 69% significance, versus 28% significance for the regression method. The increasing frequency of flooding worldwide has driven research to improve near real-time flood mapping from remote-sensing data. Improved automation and processing speed to map both open water and vegetated area flooding have resulted from these research efforts. Despite these achievements, flood mapping in urban areas where a significant number of overall impacts are felt remains a challenge. Near real-time data availability, shadowing caused by manmade infrastructure, spatial resolution, and cloud cover inhibiting optical transmission, are all factors that complicate detailed urban flood mapping needed to inform response efforts. This paper uses numerous data sources collected during two major flood events that impacted the same region of Eastern Canada in 2017 and 2019 to test different urban flood mapping approaches presented as case studies in three separate urban boroughs. Cloud-free high-resolution 3 m PlanetLab optical data acquired near peak-flood in 2019 were used to generate a maximum flood extent product for that year. Approaches using new Lidar Digital Elevation Models (DEM)s and water height estimated from nineteen RADARSAT-2 flood maps, point-based flood perimeter observations from citizen geographic information, and simulated traffic camera or other urban sensor network data were tested and verified using independent data. Coherent change detection (CCD) using multi-temporal Interferometric Wide (IW) Sentinel-1 data was also tested. Results indicate that while clear-sky high-resolution optical imagery represents the current gold standard, its availability is not guaranteed due to timely coverage and cloud cover. Water height estimated from 8 to 12.5 m resolution RADARSAT-2 flood perimeters were not sufficiently accurate to flood adjacent urban areas using a Lidar DEM in near real-time, but all nineteen scenes combined captured boroughs that flooded at least once in both flood years. CCD identified flooded boroughs and roughly captured their flood extents, but lacked timeliness and sufficient detail to inform street-level decision-making in near real-time. Point-based flood perimeter observation, whether from in-situ sensors or high-resolution optical satellites combined with Lidar DEMs, can generate accurate full flood extents under certain conditions. Observed point-based flood perimeters on manmade features with low topographic variation produced the most accurate flood extents due to reliable water height estimation from these points. IoT (Internet of Things)-based remote monitoring and controlling applications are increasing in dimensions and domains day by day. Sensor-based remote monitoring using a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) becomes challenging for applications when both temporal and spatial data from widely spread sources are acquired in real time. In applications such as environmental, agricultural, and water quality monitoring, the data sources are geographically distributed, and have little or no cellular connectivity. These applications require long-distance wireless or satellite connections for IoT connectivity. Present WSNs are better suited for densely populated applications and require a large number of sensor nodes and base stations for wider coverage but at the cost of added complexity in routing and network organization. As a result, real time data acquisition using an IoT connected WSN is a challenge in terms of coverage, network lifetime, and wireless connectivity. This paper proposes a lightweight, dynamic, and auto-reconfigurable communication protocol (LDAP) for Wide-Area Remote Monitoring (WARM) applications. It has a mobile data sink for wider WSN coverage, and auto-reconfiguration capability to cope with the dynamic network topology required for device mobility. The WSN coverage and lifetime are further improved by using a Long-Range (LoRa) wireless interface. We evaluated the performance of the proposed LDAP in the field in terms of the data delivery rate, Received Signal Strength (RSS), and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). All experiments were conducted in a field trial for a water quality monitoring application as a case study. We have used both static and mobile data sinks with static sensor nodes in an IoT-connected environment. The experimental results show a significant reduction (up to 80%) of the number of data sinks while using the proposed LDAP. Rockfall processes are now commonly studied through monitoring campaigns using repeat lidar scanning. Accordingly, several recent studies have evaluated how the temporal resolution of data collection and various data-processing decisions can influence the apparent rockfall volumes estimated using typical rockfall database creation workflows. However, there is a lack of studies that consider how data quality and associated data-processing decisions influence rockfall volume estimation. In this work, we perform a series of tests based on an existing reference rockfall database from the Front Range of Colorado, USA, to isolate the influences of data resolution (point spacing), individual point precision, and the filter threshold applied to change results, on the volume estimates obtained for rockfalls. While the effects of individual point precision were found to be limited for typical levels of gaussian noise (standard deviation per coordinate direction ≤ 0.02 m), data resolution and change filter threshold were found to have systematic impacts on volume estimates, with the volume estimates for the smallest rockfalls decreasing substantially with increases in point spacing and change filter threshold. Because these factors disproportionately impact volume estimates for smaller rockfalls, when these factors change, the slope of the apparent power law that describes the relative frequency-volume distribution of rockfalls changes. Evidence is presented that suggests that this phenomenon can explain discrepancies between power law slopes presented in the literature based on studies focused on different scales of rockfall activity. Overall, this study demonstrates the impacts of raw data attributes on rockfall volume estimation and presents an additional effect that tends to bias rockfall frequency–magnitude power law relationships towards underestimation of the relative prevalence of small rockfalls. Analyses of riverbed shape evolution are crucial for environmental protection and local water management. For narrow rivers located in forested, mountain areas, it is difficult to use remote sensing data used for large river regions. We performed a study of the Prądnik River, located in the Ojców National Park (ONP), Poland. A multitemporal analysis of various data sets was performed. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based data and orthophotomaps were compared with classical survey methods, and 78 cross-sectional profiles were done via GNSS and tachymetry. In order to add an extra time step, the old maps of this region were gathered, and their content was compared with contemporary data. The analysis of remote sensing data suggests that they do not provide sufficient information on the state and changes of riverbanks, river course or river depth. LiDAR data sets do not show river bottoms, and, due to plant life, do not document riverbanks. The orthophotomaps, due to tree coverage and shades, cannot be used for tracking the whole river course. The quality of old maps allows only for general shape analysis over time. This paper shows that traditional survey methods provide sufficient accuracy for such analysis, and the resulted cross-sectional profiles can and should be used to validate other, remote sensing, data sets. Accurate identification of agriculture areas is a key piece in the building blocks strategy of environment and economics resources management. The challenge requires one to deal with landscape complexity, sensors and data acquisition limitations through a proper computational approach to timely deliver accurate information. In this paper, a Machine Learning (ML) based method to enhance the classification process of areas dedicated to seasonal crops (row crops) is proposed. To this objective, a broad exploration of data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer sensors (MODIS) was made using pixel time-series combined with time-series similarity metrics. The experiment was performed in Brazil, covered 61% of the total agriculture areas, five different states specifically selected to demonstrate biome differences and the country's diversity. The validation was made against independent data from EMBRAPA (Brazilian Agriculture Research Corporation), RapidEye Sensor Scene Maps. For the eight tested algorithms, the results were enhanced and demonstrate that the method can rate the classification accuracy up to 98.5%, average value for the tested algorithms. The process can be used to timely monitor large areas dedicated to row crops and enables the application of state of art classification techniques, two levels classification process, to identify crops according to each specific need within the areas. Nowadays, stringent requirements for the quality of SAR data products exist. The radiometric and image quality requirements can only be fulfilled by knowing the disturbances caused by the radar hardware itself. The internal calibration is a mechanism to estimate these disturbances from the real hardware. Unfortunately, most of the current internal calibration schemes interrupt the SAR data acquisition during internal calibration and hence cause a loss of azimuth samples and a degradation of the image quality. The calibration is thus often performed only before and after a data take. However, these two calibration events are hardly sufficient to estimate the instrument parameters during the whole acquisition especially for long data takes, which will become more common in future SAR system. In this paper, an internal calibration scheme is introduced which allows performing the internal calibration during nominal data acquisition by injecting a coded calibration signal into the receiver with very low power. This signal causes only minor degradation of the SAR image but can be retrieved from the data using adequate signal processing. This technique is described, the theoretical performance estimated, and finally demonstrated on real data from the TerraSAR-X mission. This work presents novel pattern recognition techniques applied on bathymetric data from two large areas in Eastern Mediterranean. Our objectives are as follows: (a) to demonstrate the efficiency of this methodology, (b) to highlight the quick and accurate detection of both hydrocarbon related tectonic lineaments and salt structures affecting seafloor morphology, and (c) to reveal new structural data in areas poised for hydrocarbon exploration. In our work, we first apply a multiple filtering and sequential skeletonization scheme inspired by the hysterisis thresholding technique. In a second stage, we categorize each linear and curvilinear segment on the seafloor skeleton (medial axis) based on the strength of detection as well as the length, direction, and spatial distribution. Finally, we compare the seafloor skeleton with ground truth data. As shown in this paper, the automatic extraction of the bathymetric skeleton allows the interpretation of the most prominent seafloor morphological features. We focus on the competent tracing of tectonic lineaments, as well as the effective distinction between seafloor features associated with shallow evaporite movements and those related to intense tectonic activity. This paper presents an approach for 3D reconstruction of heritage scenes using a videogrammetric-based device. The system, based on two video cameras with different characteristics, uses a combination of visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and photogrammetry technologies. VSLAM, together with a series of filtering algorithms, is used for the optimal selection of images and to guarantee that the user does not lose tracking during data acquisition in real time. The different photogrammetrically adapted tools in this device and for this type of handheld capture are explained. An evaluation of the device is carried out, including comparisons with the Faro Focus X 330 laser scanner, through three case studies in which multiple aspects are analyzed. We demonstrate that the proposed videogrammetric system is 17 times faster in capturing data than the laser scanner and that the post-processing of the system is fully automatic, but takes more time than the laser scanner in post-processing. It can also be seen that the accuracies of both systems and the generated textures are very similar.
