*INDUSTRIAL policy, *ENGINEERING, BRITISH politics & government
Abstract
Focuses on the impact of industrial policy on the engineering and manufacturing base in Great Britain. Conception of the government on industrial policy; Establishment of university innovation centers; Encouragement of the development and take-up of environmentally friendly products and energy systems.
The article reports on the move of the Bank of England to redesign £50 note to pay homage to two giants of the industrial age in Great Britain. It states that entrepreneur Matthew Boulton and engineer James Watt, who led the developments in the steam engine, will appear on the note. According to Bank of England governor Mervyn King, engineering has a vital role in many of the advantages society enjoys.
Reports on news and developments concerning the engineering sector in Great Britain. Employee redundancy at the tractor firm, Massey Ferguson; British government's publication of its skills strategy white paper; Decline in total exports of machine tools in the first quarter of 2003.
This article reports that engineers seeking professional registration can access their MPDS plan and progress updates over the Internet. They and their employers, can also submit forms, reports and records to a secure website linked to the IMechE' s but accessible at www.thenipds.org.uk. The e-MPDS system records postgraduate engineers' progress towards accreditation and stores evidence supporting their achievements. The system removes the need for paper-based records and dual logging within companies and the IMechE.
This article reports that as of early next year most Great Britain's research councils will only accept electronic submissions for funding, despite around half of applications still being made on paper. Although EPSRC was unable to give figures, two of the other research councils affected said that up to half of submissions are received in hardcopy. A Je-S helpline has been set up to support those having difficulty using the computerised system. Electronic systems are not foolproof, though.
Reports that the British government requested a response from the local engineering industry regarding its `The Learning Page,' education and training green paper. How the industry has responded to this request; Reference to a deal involving various engineering organizations; Purpose of this deal; Comments from European Engineering Federation (EEF) Director-General Graham Mackenzie.
Reports on the Royal Academy of Engineering's (RAE) call for university research funds to be allocated by the interdisciplinary nature of projects rather than by the number of academic papers a department publishes. Need for an additional advisory panel to assess interdisciplinary research submissions; Comments from RAE representative Tony May.
Reports on the call for papers for a Steam Plant Committee seminar on December 10, 1997 in Great Britain. Concern on the design, selection, manufacture, construction and finishing of supporting structures for boilers; Seminar topics; Contact information.
The article offers information related to engineering in Great Britain. At the end of 19th century, 75 percent of the world's steel pen nibs were manufactured at Birmingham factories and by 1913, 1.5 billion nibs were made. The film "Sunshine," created with the scientific guidance of Dr. Brian Cox, tells a story of the 8 astronauts of the Icarus II on a last-ditch mission to save humanity from destruction. Airship Bournemouth was built in 1951 by English Airship Club for the Festival of Britain.
