This article argues for an alternative response to the 'consumer society' hypothesis for 18th-century England, which is seen to focus on large-scale development and obscure the relations between people and objects. Returning to Marx's theories regarding 'consumer fetishism' and utilising Bruno Latour's work on hybrids and the human and the non-human, the paper considers the manner in which people used objects and objects used people. Utilizing the courtesy books and 'it-narratives' of the 18th century and the later works of Jane Austen, the paper argues that goods should not be seen only as commodities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the discrepancy between the acknowledged historical importance of post-medieval rural society and the limited archaeological investigation and research on this theme. It considers developments in national research agendas in this field and the influences which have shaped them. There is a need to employ a more critical and analytical approach to landscape studies, giving consideration to the effects of perception, custom and attitude. Among the themes explored are the need for more interdisciplinary studies; for wider application of palaeoenvironmental and ecological analyses; and for a fuller understanding of regional differences. Throughout, the unique value of a specifically archaeological voice is emphasized. The paper is based on a contribution to a seminar on research agendas for post-medieval archaeology in Britain, held by SPMA and hosted by the Society of Antiquaries of London in September 2002. The paper considers changing research priorities in the study of defence and warfare during the last 30 years. Attention is drawn to the exceptional richness and variety of defensive works in Britain and the high quality of the associated documentation. The particular importance of the works of the navy is described and their sheer scale is underlined. The dramatic growth of research into the archaeology of 20th-century warfare is reviewed. Among the individual topics deserving specific study in the future are the monuments of the English Civil War; army training; war signal stations; 20th-century civilian defences; oral history; monuments arising from the most recent episodes of warfare; and the personnel who manned defences. Since the 1980s inscriptions with names, dates and symbols along the central bar on the inside of milled window leads have been recognized and recorded. Dating to between the first quarter of the 17th and the first decade of the 19th centuries, more than 170 different variations have been noted, not only on finds from the UK but also on those from several colonial settlements in North America. This paper draws together a dated series of these leads using a standardized set of recording conventions, providing a comprehensive catalogue and framework for future research. This paper describes the types of bottle-shaped kiln used in the British pottery industry in the 1950s. It reviews the evidence of standing structures, archaeological fieldwork and documentary sources for their operation and antecedents. It concludes that their origins are to be found in developments of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and that their widespread adoption was as much for cultural as for technical reasons. In the 1520s Cardinal Wolsey dissolved 29 monastic houses, appropriating the revenue to support two colleges at Oxford and Ipswich. This paper reviews the procedures employed by Cromwell, Wolsey's agent, to bring about these suppressions, and the contemporary significance of the appropriation and destruction of monastic buildings. A survey book compiled by William Brabazon records considerable detail about the appearance of five of the suppressed houses, indicating that they had a manorial character. An additional survey survives for the monastery at Rumburgh. The 'Little Dissolution' differed from the later dissolutions in a number of important respects, but some of the strategies developed were later redeployed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the post-medieval letter graffiti present at historic sites in the UK, and carries out a statistical analysis of the markings across multiple sites, with a view to determining authorship and intent. The data from the graffiti inscriptions is also examined within the wider social history context of naming traditions within the UK and elsewhere, and concludes that a measurable and distinct gender bias is present amongst the historical graffiti that has wide reaching implications with regard to concepts of gendered space and social norms. An analysis of the material and social implications of the change of dining style from à la Française to à la Russe seen through the perspective of a documented individual, the Countess of Harewood, Diana Elizabeth Smyth, who is making preparations for a formal dinner at Harewood, West Yorkshire. Combining documentary evidence with the surviving material culture, imagined monologues are presented as they might have been delivered by the Countess in 1871, followed by explanatory commentary. The counterpoint texts create a dialogue which allows us to explain, analyse and consider the attitudes, behaviours and meanings of the dining choices made in the past, and how we create our understanding in the present. Intensive metal mining considerably altered many British upland landscapes between the 18th and 20th centuries, modifying both subterranean and surface environments and fundamentally changing the character of local settlements, infrastructure and society. However, our understanding of the landscape-scale patterns of development through time in mining districts is still limited. In this study, we take an interdisciplinary approach to understand the historical development of the mining industry within a nearly 200 km2 area of the North Pennines, UK. Our approach combines documentary and cartographic records, archaeological mapping, and geomorphological analysis of changes to the physical environment. We demonstrate pronounced spatio-temporal variability in the intensity of mining and the nature of associated landscape impacts. Production time series data indicate a widespread intensification of operations during the 18th century, with archaeological evidence suggesting that the environmentally destructive practice of hushing, a hydraulic mining technique, was also widespread during this period. The scale of ore production from subterranean mines increased considerably throughout the mid-19th century, before a rapid decline from the late 1800s onwards. The influence of large mining corporations reached into all aspects of the local economy and society; altering the settlement patterns, infrastructure and demographics of the area and shaping the finances, health and wellbeing of the miners and their families. The environmental and societal changes that accompanied the mining industry were profound, resulting in mining districts with a distinctive landscape character and legacy that persist to the present day. The United Kingdom's National Memorial Arboretum, in Staffordshire, England, contains a memorial to the 306 British and Commonwealth soldiers who were shot at dawn during the First World War for desertion and/or cowardice. The location of the 'Shot at Dawn Memorial' within the Arboretum's living archaeological landscape reveals ambiguities and tensions between the memorial's physical location, its prominent role in site interpretation and the nature of memorialization of one of the most emotionally charged sequences of events in the First World War. SUMMARY: The demolished Great Moor Farm provided a unique opportunity to study the development of a Devon farmhouse combining detailed fabric recording, excavation and documentary research. The building had a complex structural history, and neither the recording of the standing structure nor the excavation on its own provided sufficient information for the confident identification of the sequence of phases and their dating. The development of the house can be followed from its original construction in the early 16th century, as it was adapted, improved and enlarged following the prevailing fashions of comfort and style, to become a relatively large and comfortable house by c. 1700. Its growth coincided with a prosperous period for Devon farmers and with the evolution of the medieval to the modern house. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: Excavation at Liverpool Street, London, for Crossrail Limited, uncovered two large drains and a pit in an area of the city known since the medieval period as 'Moorfields'. Their fills can be closely dated to the mid 16th century and included artefacts such as personal possessions, domestic utensils and refuse, and material likely to be waste from leather and textile processing. The combination of excellent preservation, tight dating and an assemblage encompassing all facets of everyday life is seldom encountered for this period, making this a nationally significant assemblage, which is outlined here by broad functional category. SUMMARY: Between 2004 and 2007, ARCUS undertook a programme of archaeological work at the site of the Stephenson Blake-Type Foundry, Sheffield, in advance of redevelopment. This article will focus on the results of the below-ground investigations. The archaeological work provided information on the domestic character of the site, with examples of the houses and courts revealed, and the industrial character of the site relating to the former Kenyon Cutlery Works. Excavation informed on how the site was developed, and on the material culture relating to everyday occupation and manufacturing on site, and highlighted the close relationship between housing and works. The a summary of Post-medieval fieldwork in Britain and Ireland conducted in 2012 is presented. Accompanied by format notes, note for contributors, an index and a summary of abbreviations, the report provides summaries for nearly 400 instances of archaeological fieldwork carried out in Ireland and Great Britain.

The prehistoric monuments of southern Anglesey have been interpreted in various ways over the past three centuries, as an examination of the work of antiquarians, artists, landscape designers and other contemporary commentators reveals. During the post-medieval period, the meanings of these monuments shifted, as perceptions of the pre-Roman era changed. As embodiments of the past, megalithic monuments were embraced by Welsh historians, antiquarians and artists in the movement to formulate a Welsh national identity. Moreover, their incorporation into landscape gardens was indicative of the extent to which they captured the contemporary imagination. Local communities, meanwhile, reacted in differing ways to the megaliths, influenced concurrently by superstition and agrarian pragmatism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The French immigrants of early modern London are recorded as having been a clearly recognizable community with similarities in language, religion, occupation and material culture. However, analysis of the excavated and documentary evidence of their domestic artefacts reveals few differences when compared with their English counterparts. Although isolated artefacts may reasonably be linked to an immigrant identity, the majority of refugees do not appear to have commonly expressed their group identity through their domestic material culture in historically identifiable ways. This may indicate that the nature of French immigrant identity was more complex and varied than contemporary accounts imply. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information about Post-Medieval archaeological excavations and fieldwork undertaken in 2011 in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and the Channel Isles. Some of the excavations considered include structures of English Civil War fortifications dating from the early 1640s in Bristol, a 19th century subterranean cistern near the Tithe Barn in Shirehampton, and an artificial landscape feature from the 18th century believed to be part of the gardens of Denham Court in Buckinghamshire.

Excavation of the cemetery associated with Littlemore Baptist Chapel, Oxford, revealed a total of 31 graves and coffins dating to the second half of the 19th century. The remains of 30 individuals survived. Coffin fittings were not plain as expected, but rather followed the Anglican tradition of the time. The skeletal evidence indicated a population where some suffered nutritional deficiencies in childhood, while others experienced longevity in adulthood, with the majority of pathological conditions being linked to old age. Evidence of trauma and degenerative change linked to manual labour were largely absent. Two examples of neoplastic disease were identified and these are discussed in detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trailed and combed slipwares are a common component of mid 17th- and 18th-century archaeological ceramic assemblages in England. Despite their widespread manufacture, pieces produced at different centres across England appear remarkably similar in terms of fabric and decoration. Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and petrography are employed to determine if chemical, mineralogical or technological traits can be used to indicate manufacturing provenance. Sherds from Bristol, North Staffordshire and South Yorkshire were analysed. The results reveal that they form cohesive chemical and petrographic groups that correlate with their place of manufacture, indicating potential for future studies of slipware production and distribution. The article reports on the activities of Great Britain's Portable Antiquities Scheme in 2010, established to record the public's archaeological finds in England and Wales, focusing especially on noteworthy post-Medieval finds. Notable finds detailed include a mask dating from the 16th or early 17th century found in Northamptonshire, a copper-alloy prosthetic nose dating from the 16th or 17th century found in East Sussex, and a gold crown of the double rose, a coin featuring the likenesses of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon, dating from the first half of the 16th century found in Wiltshire.

Post-excavation analysis of animal bones recovered from late 18th-/19th-century military refuse deposits within the Berry Head Forts (Torbay, Devon, UK) has provided evidence for the inclusion of fresh fish in the garrison's diet. European hake was the principal fish in the food rations of the ordinary soldiers whilst more expensive fish, notably turbot, sole and John Dory, was only eaten in the officers' messes. Reconstructed lengths of the hake in the archaeological assemblage formed a distribution pattern very different from that plotted from data on modern trawler-caught hake, showing how much post-industrial commercial fishing activity has profoundly altered the age/size structure of modern hake stocks. The article reports on the activities of Great Britain's Portable Antiquities Scheme in 2009, established to record the public's archaeological finds in England and Wales, focusing especially on noteworthy post-Medieval finds. Notable finds detailed include a sixteenth-century cast copper-alloy skillet uncovered in Congleton, Cheshire, England; a mid 16th-17th century cast lead-alloy hornbook discovered in Beckingham, Nottinghamshire, England; and a late 16th century lead-alloy openwork toy coach found in London, England.

The article presents information about Post-Medieval archaeological excavations and fieldwork undertaken in 2010 in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and the Channel Isles. Some of the excavations considered include a building survey of the former Rozel Barracks on the Isle of Jersey, Channel Islands constructed in 1810 and 1811 during the Napoleonic War; excavation of the cemetery of the hospital of St John the Evangelist, converted into St John’s College in 1511, currently the location of the Selwyn Divinity School, University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England; and a site evaluation of the former Travis Perkins and Cattle Yard site in Machynlleth, Wales which notes details of its 19th-century structures.
