Background: In the last two decades, the use of oral anticancer agents (OAAs) has increased in cancer patients. Despite this, patients and their caregivers face some challenging issues (side effects, drug-to-drug interactions, etc.) related to OAA administration. The three dimensions of self-care by Riegel et al., self-care maintenance (i.e., stability of patient condition), self-care monitoring (i.e., detection of side effects), and self-care management (i.e., management of side effects), may be implemented to avoid negative outcomes. However, knowledge of self-care determinants is necessary to recognise people at risk of poor self-care behaviours. Aims: Determine which are the predictors of self-care maintenance, self-care monitoring and self-care management in patients with cancer taking OAA. Methods: A systematic review with narrative synthesis was conducted. We included studies on adult patients with cancer using any kind of oral anticancer agent and describing a predictor of self-care. The search was performed on PubMed, CINAHL/PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Results: Of 3,061 records, 45 studies were included in this review. Forty-six predictors organised into 14 categories were identified. In general, all studies focused only on adherence, considered as a self-care maintenance component, and none of them focused on other dimensions of self-care. The predictors of OAA adherence most reported were age, side effects, and socioeconomic factors (e.g., insurance status, and annual income). Conclusions: This systematic review highlighted the literature gap on the analysis of determinants of self-care behaviours in patients taking OAAs. This element could be a starting point for future research that can provide elements to support the oncology nursing research agenda, aimed at recognising patients at risk of poor self-care. Background: Lenvatinib is an oral anticancer medication used to treat radioiodine-refractory thyroid cancer and unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. The purpose of this study is to evaluate lenvatinib adherence by patients and to identify factors associated with decreased lenvatinib adherence. Methods: Among 153 patients who started treatment with lenvatinib for unresectable thyroid cancer or unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma between May 1, 2015 and August 31 2021 at the Cancer Institute Hospital of the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research, 102 were eligible for this study (55 thyroid cancer, 47 hepatocellular carcinoma). The lenvatinib adherence rate in a treatment cycle was defined as the number of times a patient took lenvatinib in a 28-day cycle divided by the prescribed 28 doses. The rate was determined by pill counting and self-reporting at the pharmaceutical outpatient clinic. Reasons for non-adherence were established by interview and analyzed. Results: The median adherence rate of lenvatinib in the first cycle was 90.1% (n = 55) in thyroid cancer and 94.9% (n = 47) in hepatocellular carcinoma. In thyroid cancer, there were 255 incidents of lenvatinib non-adherence. Non-adherence was mainly associated with bleeding events (18.6%), followed by hand-foot skin reactions (10.6%). In hepatocellular carcinoma, there were 97 incidents of non-adherence. Hypertension accounted for 20.6%, followed by hoarseness (18.6%) and diarrhea (17.5%). Conclusion: The adherence rate for lenvatinib in Japanese patients with thyroid and hepatocellular carcinoma in real-world clinical practice was more than 90% in this study. Background and objective: Patients with cancer taking oral antineoplastic medications may encounter problems including suboptimal adherence as well as physical and psychological disease burden. Despite increase in the use of oncology pharmacy services, there are wide variations between healthcare professionals and patient perceptions of patients' medication experiences. The objective of the study was to explore the medication experience of taking oral targeted therapy in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Method: We purposively sampled advanced stage (stage III or IV) NSCLC patients taking epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) in a medical center in Taiwan. Face-to-face interviews using semi-structured interview guides were conducted. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was applied. A phenomenological methodology was adopted to explore the underlying meaning of patients' lived experience. Results: A total of 19 participants with a mean age of 68.2 years were interviewed. The duration of EGFR-TKIs use ranged from 2 weeks to 5 years. When first learned about the unexpected yet 'treatable' cancer, participants expressed strong emotional responses based on their intrinsic beliefs of the terminal disease and therapy. They walked along an unfamiliar trail while confronting physical and psychological challenges and made compromises to treatment. Gaining experiences from cancer journey, patients with cancer continuously seek the ultimate goals–'return to normal'. Conclusions: This study also revealed medication experiences of participants' journey from seeking information in the initial phase and living with cancer, to taking back control of their own lives. Healthcare professionals could better empathize with patients' loss of control and understand their perspectives when making clinical decisions. These findings can guide interdisciplinary teams to integrate patients' beliefs and conduct pre-screening assessments of health literacy levels to tailor communication. Long-term multiple myeloma therapy by immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) raises the question of management of adverse effects. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of an educational session for patients on the acquisition of knowledge to manage hematologic and thromboembolic adverse effects of IMiDs. In this prospective single-center study, patients attended an educational session with a hospital clinical pharmacist and a nurse. The primary endpoint was the patient's level of knowledge for the management of IMiDs adverse effects, assess with a dedicated questionnaire administered before the session then 1 and 6 months after. Assessment of knowledge was combined with self-assessment of certainty. The secondary endpoints were adherence and IMiD treatment satisfaction. 50 patients were included. Patient knowledge increased at 1 month (p<0.001) despite a loss of knowledge at 6 months (p<0.05). Six months after the educational intervention, the number of patients with skills considered satisfactory by the pharmacist and nurse increased (p<0.01). Most patients showed satisfactory adherence, with medication possession ratio ≥ 80%. The Self CARe and MEdication Toxicity (SCARMET) study highlighted the impact of multidisciplinary follow-up in multiple myeloma patients to improve knowledge of toxicity self-management. Saturation, a core concept in qualitative research, suggests when data collection might end. It is reached when no new relevant information emerges with additional interviews. The aim of this research was to explore whether a mixed methods design could contribute to the demonstration of saturation. Firstly, saturation was conceptualized mathematically using set theory. Secondly, a conversion mixed design was conducted: a set of codes derived from qualitative interviews were quantitized and analyzed using partial least squares (PLS) regression to document whether saturation was reached. A qualitative study conducted by other researchers prior to this work (i.e. none of the present authors was involved in this study) was used to test saturation using PLS regression. This illustrative qualitative study aimed to investigate the impact of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) on nurses' work in the hospital and the results were published elsewhere (Guillemin et al. 2015). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 nurses. Saturation was characterized by the cumulative percentage of variability accounted for by PLS factors. After 12 interviews, this percentage was 51% which suggests that saturation was achieved at least on main themes. Two main themes identifying similarities in the experience of nurses caring for patients with CDI were identified: Organization/Coordination of the working day and Time-consuming work. Although dependent on the coding of qualitative data, PLS regression of quantitized data from qualitative interviews generated useful information for the determination of saturation.
