The turbulent transport of magnetic confinement plasmas including multi-ion-particle-species in helical systems such as the Large Helical Device (LHD) [Takeiri et al., Nucl. Fusion 57, 102023 (2017)] and their plasma profile sensitivities are investigated by local flux-tube gyrokinetic simulations. In the multi-ion-species plasmas, while the heat transport of each particle species has slightly different sensitivity towards the plasma temperature gradients and the density gradients, there exist quite different dependencies in the particle transport on the radial gradient profiles of the plasma temperatures and densities between each particle species. Furthermore, in the LHD plasma with the carbon impurity hole structure [Ida et al., Plasma Phys. 16, 056111 (2009)], the turbulent particle transport flux of the impurity carbon ion remains radially inward-directed robustly within the wide ranges of radial gradient profiles of the plasma temperatures and densities.

The transfer rate of the entropy variable in the wavenumber space perpendicular to the equilibrium magnetic field is evaluated by means of the gyrokinetic simulations of the toroidal ion temperature gradient turbulence. Fluctuations of the perturbed gyrocenter distribution function of the linearly unstable mode are transferred to those with higher radial wavenumbers through interactions with zonal flows driven by turbulence. The entropy transfer rate coincides with the zonal flow shearing rate in cases with weak ion temperature gradient where the zonal flows effectively regulate the turbulent transport. The obtained result verifies a correlation between the entropy transfer and the zonal flow shearing processes.

The particle and heat transport driven by the ion temperature gradient instability in helical plasmas is investigated by the gyrokinetic analysis taking into account the kinetic electron response. High and low ion temperature plasma cases for the discharge in the Large Helical Device (LHD) are studied. Two types of transport models with a lower computational cost to reproduce the nonlinear gyrokinetic simulation results within allowable errors are presented for application in quick transport analyses. The turbulent electron and ion heat diffusivity models are given in terms of the linear growth rate and the characteristic quantity for the linear response of zonal flows, while the model of the effective particle diffusivity is not obtained for the flattened density profile observed in the LHD. The quasilinear flux model is also shown for the heat transport. The quasilinear flux models for the energy fluxes are found to reproduce the nonlinear simulation results at the accuracy similar to that of the heat diffusivity models. In addition, the quasilinear particle flux model, which is applicable to the transport analysis for LHD plasmas, is constructed. These turbulent reduced models enable coupling to the other simulation in the integrated codes for the LHD.

In the framework of the flux-matching method, which is a useful way for the validation of the gyrokinetic turbulence simulations, it is strongly demanded to evaluate the plasma profile sensitivity of the transport coefficients obtained in the employed simulation model within the profile gradient ranges estimated from the experimental observations. The sensitivity causes the plasma profile stiffness for wide ranges of the transport fluxes. In the nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations for the ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence in the Large Helical Device (LHD) [Takeiri et al., Nucl. Fusion 57, 102023 (2017)], it is found that the temperature gradients around the experimental nominal observations are slightly larger than the threshold of the instability, and the ion heat diffusivities are quite sensitive to the temperature gradient. The growth rates of the instability, the generations of the zonal flows, and the sensitivities of the transport coefficients to the temperature profiles depend on the radial locations, the employed simulation models, and the field configurations. Specifically, in the optimized LHD field configuration, the sensitivities are relaxed in the outer radial region due to the enhancement of the zonal flows and the reduction of the ITG instability. In order to estimate the range of the temperature gradients possible given the experimentally obtained data of the temperature with errorbars, the statistical technique, Akaike's Information Criterion [H. Akaike, in Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Information Theory, edited by B. N. Petrov and F. Caski (Akadimiai Kiado, Budapest, 1973), pp. 267–281] is applied. A novel gyrokinetic formulation is presented by including collisional effects into the Lagrangian variational principle to yield the governing equations for background and turbulent electromagnetic fields and gyrocenter distribution functions, which can simultaneously describe classical, neoclassical, and turbulent transport processes in toroidal plasmas with large toroidal flows on the order of the ion thermal velocity. Noether's theorem modified for collisional systems and the collision operator given in terms of Poisson brackets are applied to derivation of the particle, energy, and toroidal momentum balance equations in the conservative forms, which are desirable properties for long-time global transport simulation.

Electromagnetic turbulence driven by kinetic ballooning modes (KBMs) in high-β plasma is investigated based on the local gyrokinetic model. Analysis of turbulent fluxes, norms, and phases of fluctuations shows that KBM turbulence gives narrower spectra and smaller phase factors than those in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG)-driven turbulence. This leads to the smaller transport fluxes in KBM turbulence than those in ITG turbulence even when they have similar linear growth rates. From the analysis of the entropy balance relation, it is found that the entropy transfer from ions to electrons through the field-particle interactions mainly drives electron perturbations, which creates radial twisted modes by rapid parallel motions of electrons in a sheared magnetic geometry. The nonlinear coupling between the dominant unstable mode and its twisted modes is important for the saturation of KBM turbulence, in contrast to the importance of zonal flow shearing in ITG turbulence. The coupling depends on the flux-tube domain with the one-poloidal-turn parallel length and on the torus periodicity constraint.

The transport scaling with respect to plasma size and heating power is studied for ion temperature gradient driven turbulence using a fixed-flux full-f gyrokinetic Eulerian code. It is found that when heating power is scaled with plasma size, the ion heat diffusivity increases with plasma size in a local limit regime, where fixed-gradient δf simulations predict a gyro-Bohm scaling. In the local limit regime, the transport scaling is strongly affected by the stiffness of ion temperature profiles, which is related to the power degradation of confinement.

Nonlinear entropy transfer processes in toroidal ion temperature gradient (ITG) and electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven turbulence are investigated based on the gyrokinetic entropy balance relations for zonal and non-zonal modes, which are coupled through the entropy transfer function regarded as a kinetic extension of the zonal-flow production due to the Reynolds stress. Spectral analyses of the “triad” entropy transfer function introduced in this study reveal not only the nonlinear interactions among the zonal and non-zonal modes, but also their effects on the turbulent transport level. Different types of the entropy transfer processes between the ITG and ETG turbulence are found: the entropy transfer from non-zonal to zonal modes is substantial in the saturation phase of the ITG instability, while, once the strong zonal flow is generated, the entropy transfer to the zonal modes becomes quite weak in the steady turbulence state. Vortex structures and related heat transport properties in slab electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven turbulence are comprehensively investigated by means of nonlinear gyrokinetic Vlasov simulations, with the aim of elucidating the underlying physical mechanisms of the transition from turbulent to coherent states. Numerical results show three different types of vortex structures, i.e., coherent vortex streets accompanied with the transport reduction, turbulent vortices with steady transport, and a zonal-flow-dominated state, depending on the relative magnitude of the parallel compression to the diamagnetic drift. In particular, the formation of coherent vortex streets is correlated with the strong generation of zonal flows for the cases with weak parallel compression, even though the maximum growth rate of linear ETG modes is relatively large. Vortex structures in slab electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven turbulence are investigated by means of a gyrokinetic simulation with high phase-space resolution. Depending on parameters that determine the eigenfrequency of the linear ETG modes, two different flow structures, i.e., statistically steady turbulence with a weak zonal flow and coherent vortex streets along a strong zonal flow, are observed. The former involves many isolated vortices and their mergers with complicated motion and leads to steady electron heat transport. When the latter is formed, phase difference and high wavenumber components of potential and temperature fluctuations are reduced, and the electron heat transport decreases significantly. It is also found that the phase matching with the potential fluctuation is correlated with the reduction in the imaginary part of the perturbed distribution function, and it occurs not only for the temperature fluctuation but also for any nth velocity moments.
