Abstract

Understanding the role of Quantum Chromodynamics in generating nuclear forces is important for uncovering the mechanism of short-ranged nuclear interactions and their manifestation in short range correlations (SRC). The future Electron-Ion-Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the US will provide an unprecedented opportunity to systematically investigate the underlying physics of SRC for energies and kinematic regions that are otherwise impossible to reach. We study SRCs in electron-deuteron scattering events using the Monte Carlo event generator BeAGLE. Specifically, we investigate the sensitivity of observables to high internal nucleon momentum in incoherent diffractive $J/\psi$ vector meson production. In a plane wave impulse approximation, the initial state deuteron wavefunction can be accessed directly from the four-momentum of the spectator nucleon. We use realistic physics simulations and far-forward detector simulations of the EIC to fully reveal the physics potential of this exclusive process. In particular, we provide the luminosity and detector requirements necessary to study SRCs in the deuteron at an EIC., Comment: There are a total of 7 figures and 2 tables in the main text, together with an Appendix with supplemental material

Abstract

We present a microscopic model for collective effects in high multiplicity proton--proton collisions, where multiple partonic subcollisions give rise to a dense system of strings. From lattice calculations we know that QCD strings are transversely extended, and we argue that this should result in a transverse pressure and expansion, similar to the flow in a deconfined plasma. The model is implemented in the PYTHIA8 Monte Carlo event generator, and we find that it can qualitatively reproduce the long range azimuthal correlations forming a near-side ridge in high multiplicity proton--proton events at LHC energies., 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present predictions of single inclusive jet transverse momentum, energy, and Feynman- x spectra at forward rapidity ( 5.2 y 6.6 ) in proton–proton collisions with s = 7 and 13 TeV. Calculations based on high-energy factorization and k T -dependent parton densities are compared to simulations using the Pythia event generator. Effects from parton density evolution, parton shower dynamics, multi-parton interactions, and saturation of parton densities are investigated.

Abstract

Results from two-particle correlation between identified triggers (pions ( π ± ), protons ( p / p ¯ )) and un-identified charged particles at intermediate transverse momentum ( p T ) in p–Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV have been presented. The events generated from a hybrid Monte-Carlo event generator, EPOS 3.107 that implements a flux-tube initial conditions followed by event by event 3+1D viscous hydrodynamical evolution, have been analyzed to calculate two-dimensional correlation functions in Δ η – Δ ϕ . The strength of angular correlations at small relative angles (jet-like correlations), quantified in terms of near-side jet-like per-trigger yield has been calculated as a function of the event multiplicity. The yield associated with pion triggers exhibit negligible multiplicity dependence, while the proton-triggered yield shows a gradual suppression from low to high multiplicity events. In small collision systems like p–Pb where jet modification is expected to be less dominant, the observed suppression may be associated with the hydrodynamical evolution of the bulk system that generates an outward radial flow. Analogous measurements in Au–Au collisions at RHIC energy have shown a hint of dilution in proton-triggered correlation at its highest multiplicity suggesting that the soft physics processes in p–Pb and heavy ion collisions may have qualitative similarity.

Abstract

We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semicentral √sNN = 2.76 TeV Pb–Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as vch jet 2 . Jet finding is performed employing the anti-kT algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero vch jet 2 is observed in semi-central collisions (30–50% centrality) for 20 < pch jet T < 90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the v2 of single charged particles at high pT. Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.

Abstract

A method for quantum corrections of Hanbury-Brown/Twiss (HBT) interferometric radii produced by semi-classical event generators is proposed. These corrections account for the basic indistinguishability and mutual coherence of closely located emitters caused by the uncertainty principle. A detailed analysis is presented for pion interferometry in p + p collisions at LHC energy ( s = 7 TeV ). A prediction is also presented of pion interferometric radii for p + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV . The hydrodynamic/hydrokinetic model with UrQMD cascade as ‘afterburner’ is utilized for this aim. It is found that quantum corrections to the interferometry radii improve significantly the event generator results which typically overestimate the experimental radii of small systems. A successful description of the interferometry structure of p + p collisions within the corrected hydrodynamic model requires the study of the problem of thermalization mechanism, still a fundamental issue for ultrarelativistic A + A collisions, also for high multiplicity p + p and p + Pb events.

Abstract

In a recent publication by ATLAS Collaboration a new observable, the so-called ϕ η ⁎ angle, was used for precise measurement of transverse Z momentum. One of the dominant systematic errors for this measurement originates from the theoretical control of QED final-state bremsstrahlung. At present, it is estimated at the 0.3 % level for the shape of the ϕ η ⁎ distribution. In this Letter we discuss the possible effects of the second-order QED matrix element for that quantity. For that purpose, results from simulations based on the Yennie–Frautchi–Suura (YFS) exponentiation and featuring the second-order matrix elements are used and compared with the case when the matrix element is restricted to the first-order. From this study we conclude that in order to reach the precision below 0.3 % for the ϕ η ⁎ distribution at the LHC, inclusion of the second-order QED matrix element in a respective Monte Carlo event generator is necessary.

Abstract

A measurement of the multi-strange Xi(-) and Omega(-) baryons and their antiparticles by the ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is presented for inelastic proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The transverse momentum (p(T)) distributions were studied at mid-rapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar (+). Baryons and antibaryons were measured as separate particles and we find that the baryon to antibaryon ratio of both particle species is consistent with unity over the entire range of the measurement. The statistical precision of the current data has allowed us to measure a difference between the mean p(T) of Xi(-) ((Xi) over bar)(+) and Omega(-) ((Omega) over bar (+)). Particle yields, mean pi, and the spectra in the intermediate pi range are not well described by the PYTHIA Perugia 2011 tune Monte Carlo event generator, which has been tuned to reproduce the early LHC data. The discrepancy is largest for Omega(-)((Omega) over bar (+)). This PYTHIA tune approaches the pi spectra of Xi(-) and Xi(+) baryons below p(T) 6.0 GeV/c. We also illustrate the difference between the experimental data and model by comparing the corresponding ratios of (Omega(-) +(Omega) over bar (+))/(Xi(-) + Xi(+)) as a function of transverse mass. Abstract

We developed a Monte Carlo event generator for production of nucleon configurations in complex nuclei consistently including effects of Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) correlations. Our approach is based on the Metropolis search for configurations satisfying essential constraints imposed by short- and long-range NN correlations, guided by the findings of realistic calculations of one- and two-body densities for medium-heavy nuclei. The produced event generator can be used for Monte Carlo (MC) studies of pA and AA collisions. We perform several tests of consistency of the code and comparison with previous models, in the case of high energy proton-nucleus scattering on an event-by-event basis, using nucleus configurations produced by our code and Glauber multiple scattering theory both for the uncorrelated and the correlated configurations; fluctuations of the average number of collisions are shown to be affected considerably by the introduction of NN correlations in the target nucleus. Abstract

We present new measurements of differential cross sections for Z/gamma*(->mumu)+jet+X production in a 1 fb-1 data sample collected with the D0 detector in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. Results include the first measurements differential in the Z/gamma* transverse momentum and rapidity, as well as new measurements differential in the leading jet transverse momentum and rapidity. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are compared to the measurements, and reasonable agreement is observed, except in the region of low Z/gamma* transverse momentum. Predictions from two event generators based on matrix elements and parton showers, and one pure parton shower event generator are also compared to the measurements. These show significant overall normalization differences to the data and have varied success in describing the shape of the distributions.

Abstract

This Letter describes a direct search for pair produced magnetic monopoles in e(+)e(-) collisions. The analysis is based on 62.7 pb(-1) of data collected with the OPAL detector at an average centre-of-mass energy of root S = 206.3 GeV. The monopole signal was assumed to be characterized by two back-to-back particles with an anomalously high ionization energy loss dE/dx in the tracking chambers. No evidence for production of monopoles was observed. Upper limits were obtained on the magnetic monopole pair-production cross-section (sigma) in the mass range 45 GeV/c(2) < m(M) < 102 GeV/c(2). The average limit is sigma < 0.05 pb and is essentially independent of the magnetic monopole mass. The cross-section limit is derived at the 95% confidence level and is valid for spin-1/2 magnetic monopoles. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

We present a high-precision QED calculation, with 0.1% theoretical accuracy, of two photon production in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation, as required by more and more accurate luminosity monitoring at flavour factories. The accuracy of the approach, which is based on the matching of exact next-to-leading order corrections with a QED Parton Shower algorithm, is demonstrated through a detailed analysis of the impact of the various sources of radiative corrections to the experimentally relevant observables. The calculation is implemented in the latest version of the event generator BabaYaga, available for precision simulations of photon pair production at $e^+ e^-$ colliders of moderately high energies., 11 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Inclusive jet production (e(+)e(-) -> e(+)e(-) + jet + X) is studied in collisions of quasi-real photons radiated by the LEP beams at e(+)e(-) centre-of-mass energies root s(ee) from 189 to 209 GeV. Jets are reconstructed using the k(perpendicular to) jet algorithm. The inclusive differential cross-section is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum, p(T)(jet), in the range 5 < p(T)(jet) < 40 GeV for pseudo-rapidities, eta(jet), in the range - 1.5 < eta(jet) < 1.5. The results are compared to predictions of perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Effects due to non-pointlike behavior of pions in the process e + e − → π + π − γ can arise for hard photons in the final state. By means of a Monte Carlo event generator, which also includes the contribution of the direct decay ϕ → π + π − γ , we estimate these effects in the framework of resonance perturbation theory. We consider angular cuts used in the KLOE analysis of the pion form factor at threshold. A method to reveal the effects of non-pointlike behavior of pions in a model-independent way is proposed.

Abstract

A search for the Higgsstrahlung process e + e − → hZ is described, where the neutral Higgs boson h is assumed to decay into hadronic final states. In order to be sensitive to a broad range of models, the search is performed independent of the flavour content of the Higgs boson decay. The analysis is based on e + e − collision data collected by the OPAL detector at energies between 192 and 209 GeV. The search does not reveal any significant excess over the Standard Model background prediction. Results are combined with previous searches at energies around 91 and at 189 GeV. A limit is set on the product of the cross-section and the hadronic branching ratio of the Higgs boson, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. Assuming the hZ coupling predicted by the Standard Model, and a Higgs boson decaying only into hadronic final states, a lower bound of 104 GeV / c 2 is set on the mass at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract

Analyzing the $\ell +n$-$jets+ \met$ (where $n \ge 2 $), data from Run-I of the Tevatron using the Bayesian technique, we obtain model independent limits on the product $\br(\lstop\ra be^{+}\nu_e \lspone) \times \br(\lstop^{*}\ra \bar{b}q\bar{q^{\prime}}\lspone)$ for different values of the lighter top squark($\lstop$) mass and the lightest supersymmetric particle($\lspone$) mass. The SUSY signals have been simulated by interfacing the 4-body decay of $\lstop$ at the parton level with the event generator PYTHIA. These limits have been translated into exclusion plots in the $\mlstop$-$\mlspone$ plane, which also turn out to be fairly model independent for fixed values of the BR of the competing loop decay mode $\lstop\ra c \lspone$. Assuming the loop decay BR to be negligible and using the leading order cross section for $\lstoplstop$ pair production, we obtain conservatively $\mlstop \ge $77.0 (74.5) GeV for $\mlspone$=5(15) GeV, while for $\br(\lstop\ra c \lspone)$=20%, the corresponding limits are $\mlstop \ge $68.0 (65.0) GeV. Using the larger next to leading order cross-section stronger limits are obtained. For example, if $\br(\lstop\ra c \lspone)$=20%, $\mlstop \ge $73.0 (72.7) GeV for $\mlspone$=5(15) GeV. Abstract

We investigate hadron formation in deep inelastic lepton scattering on N, Kr and Xe nuclei in the kinematic regime of the HERMES experiment. The elementary electron-nucleon interaction is described within the event generator PYTHIA while a full coupled-channel treatment of the final state interactions is included by means of a BUU transport model. We find a good agreement with the measured charged hadron multiplicity ratio $R_M^h$ for N and Kr targets by accounting for the deceleration and absorption of the primarily produced particles as well as for the creation of secondary hadrons in the final state interactions., 13 pages, 5 figures; revised and extended version, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We estimate the inclusive double diffractive production of SUSY particles at the LHC using a modified version of the POMWIG Monte Carlo event generator. The diffractive events are produced via the Ingelman-Schlein model for double pomeron exchange. The MSSM parameter space is scanned using the ``Snowmass benchmark points'' and it is shown that the lightest Higgs boson is the only SUSY particle with a large enough rate to be detected using these diffractive events., 9 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

A search for single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons has been performed using 600.7 pb^-1 of e+e- collision data with sqrt(s)=189--209GeV collected by the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence for the existence of H++/-- is observed. Upper limits on the Yukawa coupling of the H++/-- to like-signed electron pairs are derived. Additionally, indirect constraints on the Yukawa coupling from Bhabha scattering, where the H++/-- would contribute via t-channel exchange, are derived for M(H++/--) < 2TeV. Abstract

The role of hadronization mechanism in polarization phenomena in semi inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and a purity method for extraction of polarized distribution functions are discussed. According to the Monte Carlo (MC) event generator, on which this method is based, hadrons can be produced via quark (diquark) fragmentation or light cluster decays. In contrast, the purity method assumes that only quark fragmentation gives contribution to hadron production in the current fragmentation region. The ignorance of contributions from diquark fragmentation and cluster decays to asymmetry can be source of incorrect values of polarized quark distributions extracted by the purity method., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

In this publication the performance of the Monte Carlo event generator JEWEL in non-central heavy-ion collisions is investigated. JEWEL is a consistent perturbative framework for jet evolution in the presence of a dense medium. It yields a satisfactory description of a variety of jet observables in central collisions at the LHC, although so far with a simplistic model of the medium. Here, it is demonstrated that also jet measurements in non-central collisions, and in particular the dependence of the jet suppression on the angle relative to the reaction plane, are reproduced by the same model., 16 pages, 5 figures

We present results of QCD corrections to Higgs boson production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Potentially large logarithmic contributions from multiple soft-gluon emission are summed up to all order in the strong coupling. Abstract

First numerical results of the Monte Carlo generator RACOONWW for e+e- --> WW --> 4fermions(+gamma) in the electroweak Standard Model are presented. This event generator is the first one that includes O(alpha) electroweak radiative corrections in the double-pole approximation completely. We briefly describe the strategy of the calculation and give numerical results for total cross sections, including CC03, and various distributions.

Abstract

The simple "straw-man" model of low-scale technicolor contains light color--singlet technihadrons, which mix with the electroweak gauge bosons. We present lepton collider production rates at the parton level, and show that experiments at LEP2 may be sensitive to the presence of technirho and techniomega states with masses 10-20 GeV beyond the center-of-mass energy because of the mixing. The exact sensitivity depends on several parameters, such as the technipion mass, the technipion mixing angle, and the charge of the technifermions. Abstract

We realize, by Monte Carlo event generator methods, the exact O}(\alpha)$ YFS exponentiated calculation of $e^+e^- \to W^+ W^- (\to f_1\bar f'_1 + \bar f_2 f'_2)$ at and beyond LEP2 energies, where the left-handed parts of $f_i$ and $f'_i$ are the respective upper and lower components of an $SU_{2L}$ doublet, $i=1,2$. Our calculation is gauge invariant from the standpoint of its radiative effects and the respective YFS Monte Carlo event generator YFSWW3, wherein both Standard Model and anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are allowed, generates $n(\gamma)$ radiation both from the initial state and from the final $W^+ W^-$. Sample Monte Carlo data are illustrated.

Abstract

Azimuthal correlations of photons produced at mid-rapidity in 200 A GeV S + Au collisions have been studied using a preshower photon multiplicity detector in the WA93 experiment. The Fourier expansion method has been employed to estimate the event plane via the anisotropy of the event as a function of centrality. The event plane correlation technique has been used to determine the true event anisotropy, beyond the anisotropy which arises due to finite multiplicity. The VENUS event generator with rescattering and proper simulation of the detector response can explain only a portion of the observed anisotropy. The residual anisotropy is found to be of the order of 5% for semi-central collisions. This suggests that directed collective flow of the produced particles is present at SPS energies. Abstract

We present O(alpha) YFS exponentiated results for wide angle Bhabha scattering at LEP/SLC energies using a new Monte Carlo event generator BHWIDE 1.xx. Our calculations include two options for the pure weak corrections, as presented in Beenakker et al. and in Bohm et al. From comparison with the results of Beenakker et al., Montagna et al. and Cacciari et al., we conclude that the total precision of our BHWIDE results is 0.3% (0.5%) in the LEP1/SLC regime within +-100 MeV (+2.75/-2.5 GeV) of the Z peak. For LEP2, the corresponding precision is currently estimated at 1.5%; the latter could be improved if the data in LEP2 so require. Two-jet cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are calculated in next-to-leading order. The QCD corrections are implemented in a new $ep\rightarrow n$ jets event generator, MEPJET, which allows to analyze arbitrary jet definition schemes and general cuts in terms of parton 4-momenta. First results are presented for the JADE, the cone and the $k_T$ schemes. We present the exact O(alpha) correction to the process e+ e- -> e+ e- + gamma in the low angle luminosity regime at SLC/LEP energies. We give explicit formulas for the completely differential cross section. As an important application, we illustrate the size of the respective corrections of O(alpha^2) to the SLC/LEP luminosity cross section. We show explicitly that our results have the correct infrared limit, as a cross-check. Some comments are made about the implementation of our results in the framework of a Monte Carlo event generator. Abstract

We calculate the QED-corrected integrated cross-section for small-angle Bhabha scattering with kinematical cuts identical to the real experimental cuts at the LEP/SLC experiments: no distinction between electrons and photons is made. We present a new second-order Monte Carlo calculation with the exponentiation of the Yennie-Frautschi-Suura type. It provides the integrated cross-section for the low-angle Bhabha scattering process (υ < 0.060), necessary for the luminosity measurement, with an overall precision of 0.16%. The corresponding computer program BHLUMI 4.01 is in the form of a stand-alone Monte Carlo event generator. The complete and explicit definition of the multiphoton matrix element is given. Examples of numerical results from Monte Carlo phase-space integration are demonstrated and discussed. The analytical integration of the cross section for simplified cuts, keeping terms up to third order, used for cross-checks of the Monte Carlo calculation, is also presented.

Abstract

The production of the Standard Model Higgs boson in the four-fermion reaction e + e − → μ + μsu−b b is studied. The complete tree-level matrix element, including signal and backgrounds in the standard electroweak theory, is computed and initial state radiation is taken into account in the leading-log approximation. A Monte Carlo event generator has been built, and numerical results for some distributions of experimental interest in the search for the Higgs particle at future electron-positron colliders are shown, compared with those existing in the literature and commented.

Abstract

The complete tree level cross section for the process $e^+e^- \to e^- \bar\nu_e u \bar{d}$ is computed using the GRACE system, a program package for automatic amplitude calculation. Special attention is brought to the gauge violation problem induced by the finite width of the $W$-boson. The {\it preserved gauge scheme} is introduced and an event generator which includes double-resonant, single-resonant and non-resonant diagrams with no need for a cut on the electron polar angle is presented. Since no cut needs to be applied to the electron, the generator can be used to estimate background for searches involving jets and missing energy. A monojet event rate estimation based on this process at LEP-I energy is discussed.

Abstract

We discuss the leading logarithmic corrections of order α 2 to Bhabha scattering cross section on the basis of order-α 2 factorizable parts known at present. We implement these corrections in BHAGEN94, the new version of our event generator. We investigate the influence of these corrections and we estimate the size of smaller leftover corrections, which are still unknown. We conclude that they can give an error of 0.1% at small angle, but up to 1% at large angle.

Abstract

A new event generator for lepton pair production and wide angle Bhabha scattering, BHAGENE3, is presented. Both electroweak and higher order (beyond O(α) QED corrections are included. Comparisons are made with results from the programs, based on the structure function formalism, ALIBABA, TOPAZ0 and ZFITTER. For the case of the final states l + l − γγ ( l = e , μ , τ ) BHAGENE3 results are compared with those of Monte Carlo generators that use the exact O ( α 2 ) amplitudes.

Abstract

The matrix element for single hard photon bremsstrahlung in the dominant LEP II process e + e − → W + W − → 4f with massless fermions is given. An appropriate Monte Carlo event generator is described and the results for total cross sections and the photon spectrum are presented. The narrow width approximation for the W and the background are discussed.

Abstract

Excited leptons are searched for using the L3 detector at LEP. The data collected at centre-of-mass energies in the range from 192 up to 202 GeV correspond to a total luminosity of 233 pb(-1). No evidence of either pair production of excited leptons, nor of single production is found. From the searches for pair produced excited leptons, lower mass limits close to the kinematic limit are set. From the searches for singly produced excited leptons, upper limits on their couplings are derived in the mass range up to 200 GeV. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

We realize the rigorous Yennie-Frautschi-Suura theory for e + e − → f f + n(γ) , f ≠e, via the Monte Carlo event generator YFS3 Fortran which includes both initial and final state multiple photon radiation. Sample numerical results for LEP/SLC energies are given in comparison to those of YFS2 Fortran, the pure initial state multiple photon MC event generator in wide use at SLC/ LEP. Very high precision LEP/SLC experiments would be able to observe the effects of final state multiphoton radiation.

Abstract

Measurements of the trilinear gauge boson couplings WWγ and WWZ are presented from data taken by DELPHI in 1997 at an energy of 183 GeV. From a study of the reactions e+ e- →W+W-, e+e- → Wev and e+ e-→ vvy, values are obtained for Δg1Z and Δκγ, the differences of the WWZ charge coupling and of the WWγ dipole couplings from their Standard Model values, and for λγ, the WWγ quadrupole coupling. The observations are consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

We describe an event generator to simulate small- p t events in ultrarelativistic proton-proton collisions. We assume two independent processes: formation of color strings consisting of partons from projectile and target, and eventually fragmentation of strings into observable hadrons. We make use of the quark counting rules to determine elementary fragmentation vertices. The fragmentation procedure with the same parameters is also used to simulate e + e − , vp, and vp, and μp collisions. We compare mean multiplicities and longitudinal momentum distributions of produced particles for these different types of collisions at CM energies up to 30 GeV for leptonic collisions and up to 540 GeV for pp collisions.

Abstract

The event generator VENUS (for Very Energetic Nuclear Scattering) is based on a multistring model for ultrarelativistic hadronic collisions. It is assumed that strings are formed as a consequence of color exchange between the quarks of colliding nucleons, with subsequent independent string fragmentation. We apply VENUS to investigate multiplicity and transverse energy distributions in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at 200 A GeV, leading to some conclusions concerning rescattering of secondaries inside the nuclei.

Abstract

We investigate the effects of secondary interactions in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions using a new formulation of the HIJET Monte Carlo event generator. Re-interaction of secondary produced particles is implemented in both the target and the projectile nuclei, with effects such as pion absorption and nuclear cascading included. A single parameter which controls the formation time is adjusted to achieve best agreement with assorted data on proton-nucleus collisions. Excellent agreement with experimental data on transverse energy distributions in nucleus-nucleus collisions is also obtained.

Abstract

We calculate cross section for e+e− scattering into four-lepton final states such as e+e−e+e−, e+e−μ+μ −, μ+μ−μ+μ−, μ+μ−τ+τ−. We also give exclusive cross sectionsfor all cases where one or more lepton tracks are at large angles to the beams. The calculations are performed using a Monte Carlo event generator which takes into account the complete set of relevant lowest order Feynman diagrams.

A new parton shower event generator for lepton-hadron interactions is presented which includes coherent effects in both the time-like and space-like branchings. A comparison of the model is made with existing data from EMC and very good agreement is obtained.

Abstract

It has been argued that high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the LHC may exhibit collective phenomena usually studied in the context of heavy-ion collisions, such as elliptic flow. We study this issue using DIPSY - a Monte Carlo event generator based on the QCD dipole model. We calculate the eccentricity of the transverse area defined by the spatial distribution of produced gluons. The resulting elliptic flow is estimated to be about 6%, comparable to the value in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Experimentally, elliptic flow is inferred from the azimuthal correlation between hadrons, which receives contributions from collective flow, and from various other effects referred to as "nonflow". Abstract

It is argued that in the process e+e− → μ+μ−H, which will be searched for at LEP, the acollinearity of the muon pair can give a precise measurement of the Higgs mass. This argument is supported by the results of a Monte Carlo event generator which uses the exact matrix element and includes initial-state QED corrections.
