Objective: Primary desmoid-type fibromatoses arising from the oral and maxillofacial region are uncommon and hold the character of local invasion and regional recurrence. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinicoepidemiologic characteristics of this rare disease in an eastern Chinese population., Study Design: Epidemiological and clinicopathological data on 20 patients were reviewed from the hospital records and analyzed accordingly., Results: Twelve males and 8 females with a ratio of 3:2 were involved. The mandible was the most common site of presentation. Suspected malignant change was found in 6 cases and an extremely high recurrence rate was also found in up to 53%. Abnormally high blood levels of alkaline phosphatase were found in 65% of patients, which had a close relation with tumor malignant change., Conclusion: Chinese people are more susceptible to desmoid-type fibromatoses and are at an extremely high risk of regional malignant change. Objective: Studies on odontogenic tumors published from many parts of the world show a distinct geographic variation. But there is little information available in the English-language literature on the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in India. This retrospective study was designed to determine the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in an Indian teaching hospital and compare them with various reports from other parts of the world., Study Design: The pathology records of the Department of Oral Pathology, Nair Hospital Dental College, from January 1971 to December 2006 were reviewed retrospectively, and based on World Health Organization classifications, 1992, we reclassified and analyzed the odontogenic tumors. The mandible and maxilla were divided into 7 anatomic regions, and the distribution of each odontogenic tumor among these regions was recorded and analyzed., Results: A total of 250 cases of odontogenic tumors were reported in the 36-year period. Of these cases, 98.8% of the tumors were benign. The most frequent histologic type was ameloblastoma (61.5%), followed by adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (12.4%) and myxomas (6%). Odontomas, which are reported as the most frequent odontogenic tumor in American and European case reports, only accounted for 6%. In general, the odontogenic tumors showed a predilection for the mandible and the posterior regions of the jaws. Ameloblastomas occurred with a marked predilection for the mandible with a ratio of 18.1:1. But adenomatoid odontogenic tumor showed predilection for the maxilla, anterior regions of the jaws, and young females., Conclusions: Odontogenic tumors show a definite geographic variation. In India, ameloblastoma and adenomatoid odontogenic tumor are the most frequent odontogenic tumors, with distinct anatomic predilections.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the biologic profile of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) in a Thai population., Study Design: Sixty-seven cases of AOT registered from January 1974 to May 2006 were studied retrospectively. Age, sex, variants of AOT, site and extent of tumors, associated impacted teeth, initial clinical diagnoses, clinical presentations, and duration of symptoms were analyzed., Results: All AOT cases were intraosseously located, of which 55.2% were follicular and 44.8% extrafollicular. The 2 variants together were found more frequently in the maxilla than in the mandible, with a ratio of 2:1. Females were affected more often than males, with a ratio of 1.8:1. The peak incidence (56.7%) was found in the second decade of life. The majority of AOT lesions (68.7%) was found in the anterior jaws. Adenomatoid odontogenic tumors were observed more often on the left side of jaws (50.7% vs. 38.8%). Canines were the most common teeth associated with follicular AOT (67.5%), and the maxillary canines alone accounted for 51.3% of all cases. The majority of our patients presented with a painless swelling and with duration of symptoms of 6 months and longer., Conclusions: The distribution and characteristics of AOT in a Thai population are similar to the findings found in other populations. Interestingly, in this series we observed a case involving an impacted deciduous canine and a case associated with an impacted maxillary third molar.

Objective: This study sought to determine the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in a Nigerian population and to compare these data with previous reports., Study Design: Records of patients seen at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital between January 1980 and December 2003, with histologic diagnosis of odontogenic tumors (based on World Health Organisation classification, 1992), were analyzed., Results: Odontogenic tumors constituted 9.6% of all the biopsies of oral and jaw lesions seen within the period under study. Three hundred and eight (96.6%) were intraosseous, and 11 (3.4%) were peripheral (peripheral odontogenic fibroma=7; peripheral myxoma=3; peripheral ameloblastoma=1). The mean age of patients was 29.9+/-15.6 years (range, 4-85 years). Among these cases, 96.6% of the tumors were benign and 3.4% were malignant. Ameloblastoma with predilection for the mandible was the most frequent odontogenic tumor (63%), followed by adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) (7.5%), myxoma (6.5%), calcifying epithelial odontogenic cyst (5.3%), and odontogenic fibroma (5.3%). More cases of malignant odontogenic tumors were seen than cases of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor and odontomas. The mean ages of patients with AOT, ameloblastic fibroma, and odontoma were significantly lower than those with ameloblastoma ( P<.05). No significant difference was found between the mean ages of patients with benign odontogenic tumors and those with malignant odontogenic tumors ( P=.058)., Conclusions: Odontogenic tumors, especially ameloblastoma, are not considered rare among Nigerians, whereas odontoma, regarded as the most frequent odontogenic tumor in North and South America, is rare.

Reports about the frequency of odontogenic tumors are scarce, and diagnostic criteria used in the reports are not uniform. This article presents the results of a retrospective study of odontogenic tumors recorded in four services of diagnostic pathology in Mexico City (two dental schools, one cancer hospital, and one private oral pathology service). The final diagnosis in each case was based on the 1992 histologic criteria of the World Health Organization. The frequency of odontogenic tumors, expressed as a percent of all oral and maxillofacial specimens, ranged from 0.8% in the cancer hospital (0.02% of all biopsies) to 3.7% in the private oral pathology service. The frequency was identical for the two dental schools (2.5%). We found a total of 349 odontogenic tumors; of these, 345 were benign (98.8%), and 4 (1.1%) were malignant (3 were primary intraosseous carcinomas and 1 was a malignant ameloblastoma). The most frequently occurring tumors were odontoma (34.6%), ameloblastoma (23.7%), myxoma (17.7%), adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (7.1%), and calcifying odontogenic cyst (6.8%). Although relatively rare, odontogenic tumors are still an important cause of extensive surgical procedures in Mexico.

Objectives: A review of 117 ameloblastomas treated over a 10-year period was carried out., Study Design: Clinical records of 117 patients treated for histologically diagnosed ameloblastoma were retrieved and analyzed for age, sex, anatomic distribution, duration of lesions, clinical features, and treatment methods with results and complications., Results: Men and women were equally affected. The average age at the time of presentation was 28 years; 95.7% of the ameloblastomas occurred in the mandible; and 59% occurred in the premolar/incisor/canine region., Conclusion: Ameloblastoma occurs predominantly in the anterior mandible with equal frequency in men and women. Wide resection reduces recurrence.

A retrospective study of 20 patients aged 18 years and younger with ameloblastoma seen over a 10-year period at Harare Central Hospital, Harare, Zimbabwe, was carried out. Males and females were equally affected. The mandible was the most commonly involved bone (95%); the premolar/canine incisor area was commonly affected (69.1%). Incision biopsy was done before wide surgical resection of the involved bone. No currettage or enucleation was used as a mode of treatment. Immediate reconstruction was performed with metallic implants. Twenty percent of the lesions had a unilocular radiologic appearance that resembled a dentigerous cyst. Follow-up was poor.
