A complete analysis of individual phospholipids in human liver and bile has been presented. The location of individual phospholipids on the paper chromatograms was determined by the use of neutron activation of the whole paper followed by radioautography.

In 1988 EURONUT, the umbrella European Community (EC) Concerted Action on Nutrition and Health, initiated a major European multicenter study, named SENECA, to study cross-cultural differences in nutritional issues and life-style factors affecting health and performance of elderly people in Europe. According to a strictly standardized methodology, 2,586 elderly subjects—born between 1913 and 1918—have been studied in 19 towns across Europe, using a mixed longitudinal design. Data regarding nutrient and food intakes, diet habits, diet awareness, nutritional status, health, and life-style factors were collected and are partially presented in this paper. There was considerable variability from site to site—even within countries—in dietary intake, in both quantity and composition; blood biochemistries; life-style factors; health; and performance. Implications of the observed wide variability will be studied longitudinally.

A linkage between intestinal and tissue absorption of amino acids was perceived by Donald D. Van Slyke and Gustave M. Meyer in 1913, but soon overlooked by later authors. Today, on the 110th anniversary of Van Slyke's birth and the 80th anniversary of publication of their nowclassic paper in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the observation gains in nutritional significance and tells us, incidentally, why we should not dose ourselves with an isolated amino acid.

A unique, historical collection of papers, correspondence and other memorabilia, covering a sixty year period of the conquest of pellagra was recently donated by Dr. William Henry Sebrell, Jr. to the Vanderbilt Medical Center library. Famine is a nasty turn of events that intrudes on the world's consciousness from time to time. Pictures of starving people and acutely malnourished children, rampant disease, a rising death toll, and massive suffering in some far-off land move many among us to contribute to famine relief, shocked by the paradox of famine in a world “awash in grain.” Those who think about it appreciate that famine is related to poverty, that it is often triggered by climatic instability, and that it is both an instrument and tragic by-product of political conflict. But few know very much about famine beyond such fleeting insights. Even fewer are aware that the collective response to famine is woefully deficient. Just as we in the nutrition community had to fight long and hard to get malnutrition onto the development agenda as an explicit concern of public policy, so we and others like us are going to have to labor hard again to do the same for famine. This paper is an attempt to crystallize the issues involved.
