Aim: This systematic review aimed to determine the level of existing research that investigates the intake, specifically macro and micronutrient intake, of patients undergoing opioid replacement therapy. Methods: A systematic review was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and CINAHL databases using a pre‐determined protocol. Studies published between 2001 and 2022 assessing macronutrient or micronutrient intake in opioid replacement therapy patients were included. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist was utilised for quality appraisal. Data from each of the included papers was synthesised in a narrative manner. Data extracted included all measurements of nutrition including macronutrient, and micronutrient intake and any bioanalysis results and methods utilised. Results: Seven papers (one cohort study and six cross‐sectional studies, n = 443) were included that investigated an aspect of nutritional intake in patients receiving opioid replacement therapy. The majority of included papers reported an assessment of both macro and micronutrient and resulting energy intake as determined by food consumption. The included papers described a picture of irregular nutritional intake in patients undergoing opioid replacement therapy. Conclusion: Minimal research into the nutritional intake of opioid replacement therapy patients exists. The existing research is suggestive of irregular nutritional intake from both macro and micronutrient consumption and indicates a need for further studies and increased attention on this vulnerable patient group. Aim: Hospital foodservices provide an important opportunity to deliver valuable dietary support to patients, address hospital‐acquired malnutrition risk and enhance patient satisfaction. Modifying the meal ordering process through the adoption of technology may actively engage patients in the process and provide an opportunity to influence patient and organisational outcomes. This systematic review was undertaken to evaluate the impact of electronic bedside meal ordering systems in hospitals on patient dietary intake, patient satisfaction, plate waste and costs. Methods: A systematic search following PRISMA guidelines was conducted across MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE and Web of Science for randomised controlled trials and observational studies comparing the effect of electronic bedside meal ordering systems with traditional menus on dietary intake, patient satisfaction, plate waste and cost. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Quality Criteria Checklist for Primary Research tool. Results: Five studies involving 720 patients were included. Given the heterogeneity of the included studies, the results were narratively synthesised. Electronic bedside meal ordering systems positively impacted patient dietary intake, patient satisfaction, plate waste and costs compared with traditional menus. Conclusions: Despite the increase in healthcare foodservices adopting digital health solutions, there is limited research specifically measuring the impact of electronic bedside meal ordering systems on patient and organisational outcomes. This study highlights potential benefits of electronic bedside meal ordering systems for hospitals using traditional paper menu systems, while also identifying the need for continued research to generate evidence to understand the impact of this change and inform future successful innovations. Aim: To explore the attitudes and experiences of allied health students working with older adults on residential aged care placements. Method: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies of any design describing allied health student experience of residential aged care placements. Online databases searched to identify potentially relevant documents included Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL Complete (EBSCOhost) and Health and Medicine (ProQuest). Studies were excluded if residential aged care facilities or allied health professional students could not be extracted from the data. No restrictions were applied to methodological design, language, geographical location or year of publication. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess methodological quality. Extracted studies were analysed to identify the study design, participant and placement characteristics, study methodology and student experience measures. Data from the included studies were analysed thematically using meta‐synthesis. Results: Six studies (total number of participants, n = 308) met inclusion criteria, with four papers scoring a 5/5 on the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Studies included undergraduate and master's students from physiotherapy (n = 3), speech language pathology (n = 2), dietetics (n = 1) and audiology (n = 1). Placement length varied from two to 15 h, between one and six residential aged care visits. Three themes were identified; (1) Opportunity to improve skills and gain confidence, (2) Development of empathy and shift in attitudes towards older adults and (3) Recognised challenges associated with older adults and residential aged care settings. Conclusion: While the size of the evidence‐base is limited, the studies were largely consistent in demonstrating an increase in positive attitudes towards older adults following residential aged care placements. Future research, innovations and planning around workforce size, preparation and motivation must be prioritised to ensure older adults receive the care they need and deserve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: There is no standardised interventional approach to preventing or treating sarcopenia in older adults in hospital. The aim of this review was to systematically identify and synthesise the effects of nutritional interventions on markers of sarcopenia in hospitalised patients aged 65 years and older. Methods: Four databases were searched using terms for intervention, population and setting. Eligibility screening of title and abstract and then full‐text papers was competed in duplicate, independently. The final included papers were assessed for quality, and outcome data extracted independently and in duplicate. Outcome data were synthesised by meta‐analysis, where possible, or narratively. Results: Seven hundred and thirty‐two articles were screened for eligibility yielding six studies for inclusion. All studies provided oral nutritional support that aimed to increase protein intake ranging from an additional 10 to 40 g/d, each with a unique formulation of amino acids and/or micronutrients; three studies combined nutritional intervention with an enhanced physical activity program. Five studies measured hand grip strength, the mean difference was 1.97 kg (95% CI 0.55‐3.39, P =.006) greater in the intervention group (n = 166) compared with control group (n = 165). Assessment of muscle mass and activities of daily living were heterogeneous and the changes inconsistent between studies. Conclusions: Few studies inform nutritional management of inpatients with sarcopenia or at risk of sarcopenia. High quality, large intervention trials are needed urgently to identify the optimal nutrition and physical activity intervention combinations to manage sarcopenia in older hospitalised adults. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to characterise and synthesise the literature that explores the effects of macronutrient manipulation on sleep outcomes in order to provide dietary recommendations for sleep improvement. Methods: Intervention studies that evaluated the effects of macronutrient manipulations on sleep were identified using four databases. A study was included if it: (a) delivered a macronutrient‐based dietary intervention, regardless of length; (b) included healthy human participants aged 18 and older; and (c) measured some aspect of sleep, for example, duration or quality, in some manner. Results: A total of 17 papers and 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. Included studies were organised into acute studies lasting less than 24 hours (n = 4), longer‐term (≥24 hours) studies (n = 10), and energy restriction studies (n = 5). The greatest amount of support was observed for longer‐term administration of higher carbohydrate diets. These interventions positively influenced rapid eye movement sleep; however, non‐rapid eye movement sleep was negatively affected. The overall health outcomes of these changes are difficult to assess. Limited evidence suggests higher protein diets under conditions of energy restriction can improve sleep quality, but these effects might be restricted to individuals with overweight or obesity. Current evidence does not support the effects of acute macronutrient manipulation, defined as less than 24 hours, on sleep outcomes. Conclusions: Manipulating carbohydrate intake for at least 24 hours appears to alter sleep outcomes among healthy individuals. Interventions were highly varied and methodological shortcomings were identified. More work is required to fully understand how macronutrient intake affects sleep outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim The aim of this study was to provide an introduction to nutrition informatics, including a brief history and a rationale of its importance for Australian dietetics. Methods The study method used was a narrative review informed by a literature review and expert consultation with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Results Nutrition informatics has demonstrated potential to improve efficiencies, reduce costs, support research and ultimately enhance patient care. Governments and organisations have identified this as an emerging priority area. The Dietitians Association of Australia has launched initiatives to advocate and provide strategic advice on dietetic involvement in biomedical informatics and specifically nutrition informatics. Conclusions If nutrition standards and processes are not integrated into information systems, dietitians may inherit technologies that do not support dietetic work practices, and opportunities to enhance nutrition services may be missed. It is recommended that dietitians be aware of the opportunities and potential benefits of nutrition informatics, become familiar and involved in technology initiatives, and take the lead in guiding the development and implementation of technologies that may impact patient nutritional care. Aim An understanding of effective foodservice interventions on nutrition outcomes in adult patients with cancer is required to support clinical decision making. This systematic review aimed to determine the effect of foodservice interventions across a range of nutritional outcomes and satisfaction of hospitalised and ambulatory adult oncology patients. Methods The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO ( CRD42016045772). Six databases were searched using search terms associated with the intervention and population. No date or language restrictions were applied. Authors applied the inclusion criteria to titles and abstracts and then full-text papers. The final library was assessed for risk of bias. Outcome data were combined narratively and, where possible, by meta-analysis. Results From the title and abstract review of 4414 studies, 12 studies testing the effect of foodservice interventions were included in this review. Meta-analyses demonstrated significantly greater energy (mean difference 1.54 MJ/day; 95% CI 0.85-2.23 MJ/day) and protein (mean difference 18.98 g/day; 95% CI 11.58-26.39 g/day) intake through the addition of oral nutrition supplements. Other positive effects on anthropometric outcomes were also recorded. Patient satisfaction was enhanced through other foodservice interventions. Conclusions Limited original research was found exploring the effect of foodservice interventions in oncology patients. Significant findings were found in favour of the intervention across a range of nutritional outcomes, suggesting that foodservice interventions may improve clinical outcomes and satisfaction in this population. Effective foodservice interventions for oncology patients remain under-researched, so we encourage dietitians and foodservice staff to implement rigorous study designs to evaluate and publish interventions in this clinical group. Aim: Shifting to models of care that incorporate delegation of nutrition care process actions to dietitian assistants could facilitate effective and efficient nutrition care delivery. This review aimed to determine if delegation of malnutrition care activities to dietitian assistants, when compared with routine nutrition care practices influences patient, healthcare and/or workforce outcomes for adult hospital inpatients with or at risk of malnutrition. Methods: This review was undertaken in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, with five databases (CINAHL, Medline, PsycINFO, Embase and Scopus) searched systematically for studies published up to and including February 2020. Exclusion criteria included review articles and studies conducted in community settings. Results: The search yielded 3431 results, with 11 studies eligible for inclusion. Across all domains of the nutrition care process, there is emerging evidence dietitian assistants may improve the delivery of nutrition care practices, patient, healthcare and workforce outcomes. Findings demonstrated various roles and scope of dietitian assistants' practice throughout the studies. Positive patient outcomes were found when dietitian assistants were part of a multi‐disciplinary model of care. Conclusions: Implementing delegation of components of the nutrition care process to dietitian assistants is vital in the current health climate and should be considered in a future multidisciplinary model of nutrition care. Aim The increasing prevalence of dementia and the nutritional complications associated with dementia suggest an increasing need for health care that focuses on nutrition and dietetic support. The aim of this paper was to summarise existing evidence relating to nutrition in the aetiology, prevention and management of dementia in order to help inform dietitians in the provision of care to people with dementia, their families and carers. Methods A literature search was undertaken to identify relevant research that investigated the nutritional aetiology of dementia, the effectiveness of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of dementia, or strategies used by carers to provide nutrition-related support to people with dementia. Results There is currently insufficient evidence to support specific nutrition-related dementia causality. The role of specific nutrients in slowing cognitive decline in people with dementia is also unclear. People with dementia rarely maintain a stable body weight and often incur numerous feeding-related challenges that contribute to the risk of malnutrition. High-calorie dietary supplements may enhance the short-term energy intake of people with dementia but are unlikely to improve long-term weight management or other dementia-related outcomes. Conclusions Practical, achievable strategies that focus on food items and eating environments to promote oral intake of people with dementia while minimising carer burden should be a focus for nutrition and dietetic interventions. Aim The dramatic rise in childhood obesity incidence in developing countries is related to nutrition and lifestyle transition. The aim of this review was to evaluate the quality and reporting of dietary assessment methods used in studies examining the relationship between dietary outcome and childhood obesity in developing Asian countries. Methods A three-step search strategy was conducted in databases between inception and 2011 with an English language restriction. Inclusion criteria were any cross-sectional or cohort studies in children ≤18 years who resided in developing countries in Asian region that included reporting on dietary intake. Papers were screened with standardised tools for quality and dietary methodology reporting. Results The search process identified 2080 studies and 15 studies (in 16 articles) met inclusion criteria. The most commonly used dietary assessment method was dietary questionnaires (n = 10), followed by 24-hour diet recall (n = 4), food frequency questionnaire (n = 3) and an unweighed food record (n = 1). For dietary methodology reporting, 12 out of 16 articles were rated as 'poor', 3 rated as 'acceptable' and 1 as 'excellent'. Conclusions The quality rating was influenced by the dietary assessment tool chosen, and a quality rating of 'poor' was mostly obtained by studies using non-standardised, non-validated study-specific dietary questionnaires. Significant gaps were identified in dietary intake methodological quality and hence, there is an urgent need for valid dietary measures and reporting of dietary intake among overweight children for studies conducted in Asian region. Aim: Globally, sustainability and planetary health are emerging as areas of critical importance. In 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by the United Nations member states. Since then, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Commonwealth Secretariat have published guidelines for educators to embed sustainability content into curricula. This scoping review aims to identify how student dietitians learn about sustainability, how learning opportunities are evaluated, their outcomes, and whether these guidelines have translated into teaching activities contained in dietetic degrees. Methods: A scoping review was used to address the aims. Eight electronic databases and Google Scholar were searched from inception to March 2022 for articles describing dietetics students' participation in learning activities focused on sustainability. Data that addressed the research aims were charted independently by two researchers, then narratively synthesised. Results: Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria. A range of teaching approaches and evaluation methods were used, from passive learning in lectures to experiential learning activities. A change in knowledge or behaviour was found for experiential learning activities (n = 5). For articles published after 2015 (n = 9), two mentioned the Sustainable Development Goals and no articles referenced the published guidelines. Conclusions: A paucity of evidence exists describing how dietetics students learn about sustainability and their learning outcomes. Of the 12 articles published, varied teaching approaches and evaluation methods have resulted in inconsistencies in the reporting of outcomes. The minimal reference to the Sustainable Development Goals and published guidelines suggests a slow translation of knowledge to practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This review explored peer‐reviewed and grey literature to describe the types and characteristics of food or food‐related waste management strategies used in hospital food service settings; their financial, environmental and staffing outcomes; and the barriers and enablers associated with their implementation. Methods: Six electronic databases, 17 Google Advanced searches, and 19 targeted websites were searched for peer‐reviewed and grey literature. Literature reporting the financial, environmental, or staffing outcomes of food or food‐related waste management strategies that reused, recovered energy from, or recycled waste instead of sending it to landfill were eligible. Document screening and review were completed in duplicate, and included peer‐reviewed literature were assessed for quality using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Data were synthesised narratively. Results: Four peer‐reviewed and 81 grey literature records reported 85 strategies. When grouped from most to least favourable according to the food recovery hierarchy they managed waste by: donating surplus food (n = 21); feeding animals (n = 2); industrial use (n = 11); composting (n = 34) and other (n = 17). These approaches had the capacity to reduce waste hauling fees (n = 14), reduce staff handling of waste (n = 3), and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill (n = 85). Barriers included contamination of waste streams, while enablers included leadership and time‐neutral changes. Conclusion: This review summarises the waste management strategies used by hospitals worldwide that divert food and food‐related waste from landfill, their outcomes, and position in the food recovery hierarchy to enable hospital food services to implement appropriate practice and policy changes to decrease their environmental footprint. Aim: To systematically review current literature to determine the association between symptomatic osteoarthritis and dietary patterns, diet quality and food groups in adults aged ≥45 years. Methods: The review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021270891). Cochrane Central Library, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, Medline and Web of Science databases were searched. A total of 3816 records were identified. Eligible articles involved populations aged ≥45 years with symptomatic osteoarthritis, assessing dietary patterns, diet quality or food groups, with pain in joints as outcomes. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists were used for quality assessment. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used to assess the certainty of evidence. Results: Six cohort studies were included. The Prudent dietary pattern and the Mediterranean dietary pattern reduced the progression of osteoarthritis symptoms. The Western dietary pattern increased symptomatic osteoarthritis progression. Increased total fibre consumption reduced symptomatic osteoarthritis progression and pain worsening, but the effects of fibre from each food group were inconclusive. Diet with high inflammatory potential increased risk of new onset symptomatic osteoarthritis, but the effects of overall diet quality were inconclusive. Conclusions: The Prudent dietary pattern showed the highest protection on symptomatic osteoarthritis in adults aged 45 years and over. The body of evidence is limited, suggesting that further research is needed to corroborate the estimated effect at a high certainty of evidence, and to incorporate previously unstudied dietary patterns and food groups. Identifying the most beneficial dietary pattern may inform future guidelines for reducing symptomatic osteoarthritis in middle aged and older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to compare the benefits and harms of nasogastric and oral‐based refeeding on the quality of care, including effectiveness, safety, and patient experience, for patients hospitalised with an eating disorder. Methods: A systematic search for studies measuring comparative data between nasogastric and oral refeeding methods was conducted in August 2021. Title and abstracts and remaining full texts were screened by both authors. Risk of bias was evaluated using the PEDro scale, and overall quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation narrative synthesis. Results: Seven studies (one randomised controlled trial, five non‐randomised studies of interventions, and one qualitative study) with 917 participants were included. There was low certainty evidence that nasogastric refeeding resulted in no difference or a small increase in weekly weight gain, and moderate certainty of greater total weight gain, and very low certainty of increased length of stay compared to oral refeeding. There was no difference or a small increase in discharge weight and body mass index with nasogastric refeeding compared to oral refeeding. No serious adverse events were reported. Conclusion: Patients selected for nasogastric refeeding have a longer duration of illness and lower admission weight, making it difficult to determine which refeeding approach is superior. However, the lack of clear difference in weekly weight gain and the lack of reported harms suggests that other factors such as the normalisation of eating behaviour may be taken into account when choosing the most appropriate refeeding method. Aim: Scientific evidence underpins dietetics practice; however, evidence of how the therapeutic relationship influences outcomes is limited. This integrative review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic of the therapeutic relationship between clients and dietitians in the individual counselling context by summarising empirical literature into qualitative themes. Methods: An electronic literature search of the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsychInfo, Scopus and Web of Science databases was conducted in October 2018 and repeated in February 2021. Studies were included if they explicitly referred to the therapeutic relationship (or associated terms), were based on study data and available in full text. Extracted data were checked by a second researcher and the methodological quality was evaluated independently by two researchers using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. An iterative process of qualitatively coding, categorising and comparing data to examine recurring themes was applied. Results: Seventy‐six studies met the inclusion criteria. Five themes were identified which showed the extent and nature of research in this area. Studies revealed the therapeutic relationship: (i) is valued within clinical dietetic practice, (ii) involves complex and multifactorial interactions, (iii) is perceived as having a positive influence, (iv) requires skills training and (v) is embedded in practice models and tools. Conclusion: Studies show the therapeutic relationship is a valued and multifactorial component of clinical dietetic practice and is perceived to positively influence the client and dietitian. Observational data are needed to assess the extent to which the strength of the therapeutic relationship might contribute to clients' health outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This scoping review aimed to explore the extent of the evidence of experimental studies evaluating the cost effectiveness of dietary interventions in individuals with mental disorders. Methods: Five databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Scopus) were searched to October 2020 for cost‐analysis studies of interventions aiming to improve dietary intake in people with mental disorders. No restriction was placed on participant age, mental disorder type or intervention design. Results are presented narratively. Results: Of 2753 articles identified, 13 articles reporting on eight studies were included. Studies were RCTs (n = 5), cluster RCT (n = 1), cluster preference RCT (n = 1), and pre‐post test (n = 1). Seven studies were in community settings (eg, outpatient clinics), and one study in the community housing setting. All studies were in adults, seven included male and female participants, and one included only females. Defined mental disorder diagnoses included serious/severe mental disorders (n = 3), major depression (n = 2), schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or first‐episode psychosis (n = 1), any mental disorder (n = 1), and bulimia nervosa (n = 1). Five interventions were multi‐behaviour, two were diet only and one was eating disorder treatment. Cost analyses included cost‐utility (n = 3), cost‐effectiveness (n = 1), cost‐utility and cost‐effectiveness (n = 3), and a costing study (n = 1). Two studies (25%) reported positive results in favour of cost effectiveness, and four studies reported a mix of positive and neutral results. Conclusions: There is limited evidence evaluating the cost effectiveness of dietary interventions in individuals with mental disorders. Aim: Adults living with severe mental illness experience a greater burden of physical comorbidities and earlier mortality than the general population. Malnutrition, overnutrition, dysphagia, constipation and disordered eating have been observed in this population and can lead to poor nutritional status. Early identification of such conditions may reduce their impact on functional status, quality of life and health outcomes. This scoping review aimed to identify all nutrition risk screening methods published in English internationally for use with adults living with severe mental illness and ascertain which, if any, were validated for the target population. Methods: A four‐step search strategy was used to search six electronic databases and grey literature, from inception to April 2020, for articles reporting nutrition risk screening methods used in this population. Information on the content and validity of screening methods was extracted and analysed by three independent reviewers. Results: Seventeen nutrition risk screening methods were identified, of which three were validated within a population of adults with severe mental illness. One screening method was found for both malnutrition and dysphagia risk, respectively, and three for constipation risk. No single method was found for overnutrition. Eleven screening methods were identified for disordered eating risk, of which two were validated for the target population. Conclusions: Nutrition risk screening methods and their validation in adults living with severe mental illness are inadequately researched. Aim: This systematic review aimed to describe behaviour change theories and techniques used to inform nutrition interventions for adults undergoing bariatric surgery. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, PsycInfo, CENTRAL, EMBASE and CINAHL from inception until 09 March 2021. Eligible studies were randomised controlled trials involving nutrition interventions performed by a healthcare provider, to adults that were waitlisted or had undergone bariatric surgery and received a nutrition intervention explicitly informed by one or more behaviour change theories or behaviour change techniques. Screening was conducted independently by two authors. Behaviour change techniques were examined using the behaviour change technique taxonomy version one which includes 93 hierarchical techniques clustered into 16 groups. Quality of included studies was assessed using Cochrane risk of bias 2.0. Results: Twenty‐one publications were included, involving 15 studies and 14 interventions, with 1495 participants. Bias was low or had some concerns. Two interventions reported using behaviour change theories (transtheoretical model and self‐determination theory). Thirteen behaviour change technique taxonomy groupings and 29 techniques were reported across 14 interventions. Common techniques included '1.2 Problem solving' (n = 9 studies), '3.1 Social support (unspecified)' (n = 9 studies), '1.1 Goal setting (behaviour)' (n = 6 studies) and '2.3 Self‐monitoring of behaviour' (n =‐ 6 studies). Conclusion: While behaviour change techniques have been included, behaviour change theory is not consistently reported and/or adopted to inform nutrition interventions for adults undergoing bariatric surgery. Integrating behaviour change theory and techniques in nutrition interventions is important for researchers and bariatric surgery teams, including dietitians, to effectively target behaviours for this population. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to examine the literature regarding rural healthcare delivery for women with any type of diabetes in pregnancy, and subsequent maternal and infant outcomes. Methods: Eight databases were searched in September 2020, including Medline, EMCare, CINAHL, EMBASE, Maternity and Infant Care, Cochrane, Rural and Remote Health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health bibliography. Studies from high‐income countries in rural, regional or remote areas with interventions conducted during the antenatal period were included. Intervention details were reported using the template for intervention description and replication template. Two reviewers independently assessed for risk of bias using the RoB2 and ROBINS I tools. Results: Three articles met the inclusion criteria: two conducted in Australia and one in the United States. A multidisciplinary approach was reported in two of the included studies, which were modified specifically for their respective rural settings. All three studies reported rates of caesarean section, birthweight (grams) and gestational age at birth as maternal and infant outcomes. One study was considered at moderate risk of bias, and two studies were at serious risk of bias. Conclusion: There is a significant gap in research relating to healthcare delivery for women with diabetes in pregnancy in rural areas. This lack of research is concerning given that 19% of individuals in high‐income countries reside rurally. Aim: The COVID‐19 pandemic has disrupted the Australian food supply with potential ramifications on food security. This scoping review aimed to synthesise current evidence on the prevalence of food insecurity and changes to factors related to food insecurity during the COVID‐19 pandemic in Australia. Methods: A comprehensive search strategy was used to search seven databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, Global Health, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PsycINFO, Informit Online) and Google Scholar. Included studies were written in English, published in 2020–2021 and examined food security status in Australia during the COVID‐19 pandemic and/or factors associated with food insecurity in free‐living Australian residents. Articles with participants residing in institutional settings, where meals were supplied, were excluded. Results: A total of 700 records were identified from database, grey literature and hand searching, and nine articles were included. All studies indicated that the prevalence of food insecurity had increased due to negative changes to food availability, accessibility, usability and stability. The downturn in employment and economic circumstances following the onset of the COVID‐19 pandemic appeared to create a new group of food‐insecure Australians consisting of newly unemployed, and international students. Conclusion: COVID‐19 has exacerbated vulnerabilities in the Australian food supply and food security. Suggested actions include ongoing data collection on the long‐term impact of COVID‐19 on food supply and security in addition to coordinated national and community responses that improve the stability of the local food supply and address underlying determinants of food insecurity. Aim: Biophenol‐rich nutraceuticals may be an adjuvant treatment for Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease (SUDD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of biophenol‐rich nutraceutical supplementation on CD, UC, SUDD, and IBS on gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS), quality of life (QoL), inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers, and adverse events compared to usual care or placebo. Methods: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and CENTRAL were searched for randomised controlled trials until 27 April 2020. Outcomes were GIS, inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, QoL, and adverse events. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and GRADE were used to appraise studies. Data were pooled using Revman. Results: Twenty‐three trials in CD, UC, and IBS patients were included. Compared with placebo, biophenol‐rich nutraceuticals improved GIS (SMD: 0.43 [95%CI: 0.22, 0.63]; GRADE: very low) in UC, CD, and IBS participants. In UC and CD participants, biophenol‐rich nutraceuticals improved CRP by 1.6 mg/L [95%CI:0.08, 3.11; GRADE: low], malondialdehyde by 1 mmol/L [95%CI:0.55, 1.38; GRADE: low]; but only resveratrol improved QoL (SMD: −0.84 [95%CI: −1.24, −0.44; GRADE: high). Resveratrol (for UC and CD participants) and peppermint oil (for IBS participants) had greater certainty in the evidence for improving GIS and QoL (GRADE: moderate to high). There was no effect on adverse events (P >.05). Conclusions: Biophenol‐rich nutraceuticals may be an effective and safe adjuvant treatment for the management of CD, UC, and IBS; with higher certainty of evidence for resveratrol for UC and CD and peppermint oil for IBS. Aims: This review aimed to synthesise evidence on the impact of communal dining and/or dining room enhancement interventions on nutritional, clinical and functional outcomes of patients in hospital (acute or subacute), rehabilitation and residential aged‐care facility settings. Methods: Five electronic databases were searched in March 2020. Included studies considered the impact of communal dining and/or dining room enhancements on outcomes related to malnutrition in hospital (acute or subacute), rehabilitation and residential aged care facility settings. Risk of bias was assessed using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics quality checklist. Overall quality was assessed using GRADEpro software. Outcome data were combined narratively for communal dining and dining room enhancements respectively. Results: Eighteen articles from 17 unique studies were identified. Of these studies, one was a randomised control trial (moderate quality) and 16 were observational studies (all low quality). Communal dining interventions (four studies, n = 490) were associated with greater energy and protein intake and higher measures of quality of life than non‐communal mealtime settings. Dining room enhancement interventions (14 studies, n = 912), overall, contributed to increased intake of food, energy, protein and fluid. Conclusions: Results indicate that communal dining and/or dining room enhancement has a positive impact on several outcomes of interest, however, most available evidence is of low quality. Therefore, there is a need for further large‐scale, well‐designed experimental studies to assess the potential impacts of these interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Current Australian eating disorder guidelines recommend a "high" energy goal intake of 12 MJ/day, however, it is unclear whether a "high" energy goal is beneficial. This study aimed to investigate the impact of goal energy intakes <12 MJ/day (low energy) compared with ≥12 MJ/day (high energy) on body composition, midarm muscle circumference, frequency of medical complications, refeeding syndrome, length of stay, body mass index (BMI) and weight gain for patients with medically compromised eating disorders. Methods: Five electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, EMBASE and Web of Science) were searched in April, 2020. The certainty of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. Results: Four cohort studies were included (n = 656); three were rated positive and one neutral in terms of individual study bias. Evidence for the impact of higher and lower energy protocols on body fat percentage, midarm muscle circumference, frequency of medical complications, incidence of refeeding syndrome, length of stay, BMI and weight gain was of very low certainty. The certainty of evidence was downgraded to very low due to very serious risk of bias, inconsistency and imprecision. Conclusions: This review found very low certainty of evidence to support the use of high energy goal intakes for patients with medically compromised eating disorders. More robust research is warranted to establish if there are clear clinical and psychological benefits of higher energy goal intakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Very low carbohydrate high fat diets (VLCHF) are increasingly popular for weight loss and diabetes management, but the risk implications of long‐term adherence to a high‐fat‐diet remain unclear, especially in high‐risk populations. This review aimed to examine adherence, weight loss, diabetes‐ and cardiovascular disease (CVD)‐related risk markers in adults consuming VLCHF diets. Methods: Online databases were searched for randomised controlled trials ≥3 months duration that met a pre‐defined macronutrient prescription: VLCHF ≤25%E carbohydrate, >35%E fat; low fat (LF) ≥45%E carbohydrate, ≤30%E fat; and reported energy, saturated fat (SFA), weight, blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure (BP). Studies were excluded if the macronutrient prescription was not targeted (n = 32); not met (n = 17) or not reported (n = 13). Results: Eight studies included: 1217 commenced; 922 completed overweight and obese adults. Diets were isocaloric moderately energy‐restricted, closely monitored with ongoing support from dietitians, physicians, and/or nurses. Four studies reported non‐adherence beyond 3 months (n = 3) and 6 months (n = 1) despite interventions of 12, 15 and 24 months. VLCHF diets were high in fat and SFA (fat 49%‐56%E; SFA 11%‐21%E) compared to LF diets (fat 13%‐29%E; SFA 5%‐11%E). All groups achieved significant weight loss and improvements in BP and blood glucose. LDL‐C reduction favoured LF, P <.05; increased HDL‐C and reduced triglyceride levels favoured VLCHF, P <.05. Conclusions: VLCHF and LF diets with moderate energy restriction demonstrate similar weight loss and improvements to BP to 3 months. However, adherence is likely poor without intensive support from health professionals. Dietary SFA should be monitored to ensure recommended intakes, but longer‐term studies with high adherence are required to confirm the level of CVD‐risk and potential harms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Breakfast consumption may be associated favourably with cardiometabolic health. Most studies only measure breakfast consumption at one timepoint, whereas repeated measures allow for associations to be explored from a life course perspective. This systematic review assessed evidence from cohort studies on associations between breakfast consumption from childhood to adulthood and cardiometabolic health. Methods: Seven databases were searched; eligible records included analyses assessing breakfast consumption in childhood and adulthood, and type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity or associated clinical risk factors. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for cohort studies. Results: Six eligible articles were reviewed, representing four cohort studies from two countries. Body composition was the only outcome investigated by five articles; the sixth article investigated body composition as well as a metabolic syndrome score and serum cardiometabolic risk markers. Most articles found significant associations between breakfast consumption in childhood and adulthood and cardiometabolic benefits, however the quality of evidence was poor. Childhood and adulthood breakfast consumption were each associated with cardiometabolic benefits, and breakfast consumption over both life stages was associated with greater benefits. An increase in breakfast consumption from childhood to adulthood was also associated with cardiometabolic benefits. Conclusions: We evaluated the available literature and found limited studies of low quality to suggest that more frequent breakfast consumption across both childhood and adulthood may be associated with the greatest cardiometabolic benefits. Further research is needed to develop an understanding of the relationship between breakfast and cardiometabolic health from a cross‐lifestage perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This review aimed to synthesise the evidence on the effectiveness of dietary interventions targeting adolescents (>13 years) and adults living in rural or remote Australia. Methods: Six electronic databases were searched to identify dietary interventions undertaken in rural or remote communities. Studies were included if they utilised intervention and control comparisons or pre and post assessment of diet‐related outcomes. If studies included metropolitan populations, dietary outcome measures had to be provided separately for rural data. Results: In total, 14 articles from 12 unique studies met the criteria for inclusion and together provided incomplete coverage across all states of Australia, included intervention studies targeted diet to address obesity, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure or diabetes. No studies were focussed on reducing community malnutrition. All studies, with one exception, focussed specifically on rural adults, no interventions specifically targeted adolescents in rural areas. Only two studies documented the involvement of a dietitian in intervention development or delivery. All studies produced a significant outcome for either dietary intake, body mass index, waist circumference, or diet related biomedical risk factors for individuals located in rural or remote areas of Australia. Conclusion: Dietary interventions in rural Australia are under‐studied, especially among the adolescent population. This is despite the high level of preventable diet‐related disease burden in rural and remote Australia. Existing evidence shows promise in improving dietary intakes, but further, large scale intervention research, with the involvement of dietitians, is urgently needed to improve the health of rural communities. Aim: Negative body image increases the risk of engaging in unhealthy dieting and disordered eating patterns. This review evaluated the impact of habitual social media engagement or exposure to image‐related content on body image and food choices in healthy young adults (18‐30 years). Methods: A systematic search of six databases of observational literature published 2005‐2019, was conducted (PROSPERO Registration No. CRD42016036588). Inclusion criteria were: studies reporting social media engagement (posting, liking, commenting) or exposure to image‐related content in healthy young adults. Outcomes were: body image (satisfaction or dissatisfaction) and food choices (healthy eating, dieting/restricting, overeating/binging). Two authors independently screened, coded and evaluated studies for methodological quality. Results: Thirty studies were identified (n = 11 125 participants). Quantitative analysis (n = 26) identified social media engagement or exposure to image‐related content was associated with higher body dissatisfaction, dieting/restricting food, overeating, and choosing healthy foods. Qualitative analysis (n = 4) identified five themes: (i) social media encourages comparison between users, (ii) comparisons heighten feelings about the body, (iii) young adults modify their appearance to portray a perceived ideal image, (iv) young adults are aware of social media's impact on body image and food choices, however, (v) external validation via social media is pursued. Most studies (n = 17) controlled for some confounding variables (age, gender, BMI, ethnicity). Conclusions: Social media engagement or exposure to image‐related content may negatively impact body image and food choice in some healthy young adults. Health professionals designing social media campaigns for young adults should consider image‐related content, to not heighten body dissatisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Food insecurity (FI) is a critical public health issue in Australia. Population‐based interventions aiming to address the socio‐ecological determinants of FI are critical for relieving and preventing it. This review aimed to map and summarise the characteristics of population‐based interventions addressing household and/or community FI in Australia. Methods: A systematic scoping review was undertaken. Five databases, selected for range and relevance to FI in Australia ("CINAHL plus", "Ovid MEDLINE", "Sociological Abstracts", "Australian Public Affairs Information Service", and "Rural and Remote Health") were searched in May 2018 using the terms and relevant synonyms "FI" and "interventions". In addition a systematic grey literature search using multiple Google searches was undertaken. Data synthesis included categorisation and counting intervention type. Interventions were defined and charted by influence of at least one dimension of food security and impact on the socioeconomic, cultural and environmental conditions. Results: A total of 3565 published and grey literature records were identified, with the final 60 records describing 98 interventions. Few national interventions were identified, with approaches predominantly in Victoria, Northern Territory and Tasmania. Determinants related to living and working environments, food availability and food utilisation were most frequently addressed. Interventions addressing the key determinant of FI economic access were limited. A number of interventions did not appear to be associated with rigorous evaluation. Conclusions: While there is evidence of population responses to FI in Australia, the effectiveness of these remains limited. Importantly there is a lack of coordinated and coherent national responses that address the range of FI determinants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The prevalence of age‐related malnutrition is increasing in almost all Western countries. Because of their expertise, dietitians should have a central role in the management of malnutrition. This review aimed to synthesise the literature on the role of the dietitian in the management of malnutrition in the elderly in comparison with other health professionals. Methods: In November 2018, a search of Embase, Medline Ovid, Cinahl Ebscohost, Cochrane Central, Web of Science and Google Scholar was undertaken using 'dietitian', 'elderly' and 'malnutrition' as the main search terms. Qualitative and quantitative empirical research studies that focussed on the role of dietitians as the (main) subject of the study were included. Data extraction and data synthesis were performed by the three authors using a thematic synthesis approach. Results: Three themes emerged from the coding and synthesis of the 21 included studies. The first theme demonstrates that other health professionals' time for, and knowledge of, screening policies negatively affects the role of the dietitian. The second theme demonstrates that the importance of nutritional care is acknowledged. However, this does not always imply familiarity with dietetics nor does it always mean that other health professionals think involving dietitians is worth the effort. The third theme demonstrates that issues of workload appeared to be especially important in crossing or guarding role boundaries. Conclusions: The role of dietitians in managing age‐related malnutrition is not always clear and coherent. Therefore, how dietitians shape their role to provide optimal management of malnutrition in the elderly is open to debate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Ethnic Chinese women are one of the populations at high risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) internationally. This systematic review aimed to determine which dietary intervention strategies were found to be effective in improving glycaemic control and pregnancy outcomes among ethnic Chinese women with GDM. Methods: The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42016043585). Eight English and four Chinese language databases were searched for randomised controlled trials and cohort studies of dietary intervention among ethnic Chinese women with GDM. Review Manager 5.3 and GRADE criteria were used in meta‐analysis and assessment of quality of evidence. Results: Included studies comprised 3944 women in 29 eligible studies. Compared to standard treatment, low glycaemic index (GI) diets, low glycaemic load (GL) diets and fibre‐enriched diets were associated with a reduction in fasting plasma glucose, 2‐hour plasma glucose and HbA1c, and improved neonatal outcomes. Low GL diets were associated with reduced caesarean section risk. Conclusions: In ethnic Chinese women with GDM, low GI diets, low GL diets and fibre‐enriched diets were associated with improved glycaemic control and pregnancy outcomes. Given the lack of direct comparison of these three diets, future direct comparison trials are necessary to determine optimal dietary intervention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The present study aimed to systematically map and summarise existing research regarding dietetics workforce preparation and preparedness that has been conducted in Australia. The secondary aim was to then identify gaps in the literature to inform future priority areas in Australian dietetics education research. Methods: The databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, ERIC, Informit and PsycINFO were systematically searched from inception until July 2017 using key search terms to identify eligible studies. Extracted data were independently reviewed, and study quality was appraised by multiple researchers. Results were categorised by setting and primary focus/foci and then narratively summarised. Results: Sixty‐eight studies were included from 3779 records identified. Dietetics education research in Australia has spanned almost 30 years with more than half of studies (51%; 35/68) published in the last five years. The greatest proportion of research was conducted in the university setting (43%; 29/68), with students as participants (48%; 43/90) and was focused on the medical nutrition therapy area of dietetics practice (43%; 29/68). Published studies involving graduates (14%; 13/90); conducted in the workplace (12%; 8/68); and regarding emerging areas of dietetics practice (0%; 0/90) are lacking. Employment outcomes of dietetics graduates across Australia were last published over 25 years ago. Conclusions: This review provides a map for dietetics educators and researchers in Australia to guide future research regarding the preparation and preparedness of dietitians. Advancing the Australian dietetics workforce of the future will require a strategic, coordinated and collaborative approach to address the research gaps identified in this review. Aim: Grandparents are assuming increased child‐caregiving responsibilities, which potentially influences the dietary intake of grandchildren. The aim of this systematic review is to determine the influence of grandparental care on the dietary intake, food‐related behaviours, food choices and weight status of their preschool and school‐aged grandchildren. Methods: Six electronic health databases were searched in January 2017. Inclusion criteria were publication in English language, peer‐reviewed journal between 2000 and 2017; children aged 2–12 years; study outcomes included child dietary intake/weight status, grandparent nutrition knowledge/beliefs or grandparent/parent feeding practices. Included studies were appraised for quality and bias. The review was registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016047518. Results: Sixteen studies were identified in the review, published between 2007 and 2016, with 15 assessed as moderate or high quality. Nine studies reported grandparental child feeding attitudes and behaviours that are considered to negatively influence child dietary intake, while three studies identified positive influences. Seven studies identified that differences in child feeding attitudes and behaviours between parents and grandparents created conflict and tensions between caregivers, often resulting in poor feeding practices. Statistically significant positive associations (odds ratio 1.47–1.72) between grandparent cohabitation and increased rates of child overweight and obesity were found in four studies. Conclusions: Grandparents in caregiving roles may negatively influence the dietary intake and weight status of their grandchildren. More rigorous, targeted studies are required to further define the mechanisms by which grandparents' knowledge, attitudes and feeding behaviours may influence child dietary intake. Aim: Food security is defined by four dimensions: food availability, access, utilisation and stability. Resettled refugees face unique struggles securing these dimensions and, thus, food security when moving to a new country. This systematic review aimed to identify the challenges Australian refugees experience in achieving the four dimensions of food security. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed; the SPIDER tool was used to determine eligibility criteria. Three databases were searched using terms relating to food in/security and refugees from 2000 to 20 May 2017. Results: Seven articles were retained for analysis. Studies were categorised against the four dimensions, with four studies identifying challenges against all dimensions. Challenges contributing to high levels of food insecurity in each dimension included: availability and cost of traditional foods, difficulty in accessing preferred food outlets, limited food knowledge and preparation skills and food stability due to low income and social support. Conclusions: Food insecurity adversely impacts refugee health and integration. Methodical research framed by the four dimensions of food security is imperative to address challenges to securing food security in refugee groups and assisting in the development of sustainable interventions. Aim: This review aimed to identify current research related to the use of school canteens in Australia, with a focus on their food and drink policy. In Australia, approximately 25% of 5–17‐year olds are considered overweight and obese. Up to 41% of energy intake for children aged between 4 and 18 years is found to come from discretionary foods. The structured nature of the school environment provides an ideal environment to address childhood obesity and encourage a culture of healthy eating. Methods: A systematic review of three key nutrition databases: ‘CINAHL’, ‘Academic search complete’ and ‘Medline’ (inception to 2015) was conducted. Inclusion criteria were: Australian, peer‐reviewed studies; studies regarding the purchase of food from school canteens; canteen studies involving students aged 5–18 years, school principals, parents, canteen managers, Parent and Citizen Association members and teachers. Results: The search identified 2741 studies with 12 meeting the inclusion criteria. In the main, studies were descriptive in nature with data summarised into four categories: (i) characteristics of canteens; (ii) canteen use and food availability; (iii) stakeholder perceptions and the role of school canteens; and (iv) compliance with policies and the barriers to healthy food implementation. Overall, compliance with healthy canteen policies was low, guidelines were rarely adhered to in terms of product provision and children had preferences for non‐healthy foods. Conclusions: Strategies to improve compliance, overcome the challenges and encourage stakeholder buy‐in are necessary if food habits are to be changed and healthy cultures developed within the school environment.
