The article focuses on the utility of paper and printing technology. The invention of printing necessitated the production of quantities of reasonably priced paper. But the availability of paper in large quantities is also credited with the emergence of drawing as an autonomous mode of artistic expression in the early fifteenth century. Since drawing is the paradigm of artistic spontaneity, there is a felicitous irony in the fact that the mechanical has given rise to the spontaneous. Until an affordable supply of paper allowed drawings to be saved, it was common for them to be destroyed, in the course of transferring their images to the panels on which paintings were to be executed.

This article critically appraises the book "Memoirs of Prince Adam Czartoryski, and His Correspondence With Alexander I," edited by Adam Gielgud. The editor has done his work acceptably, and has provided it with an index. The publishers furnish good paper and large print, but seem to have no idea of consulting the convenience of readers by using typographical devices for distinguishing the matter of the memoirs from the editor's additions, letters, documents, and the like. Prince Adam relates his conversations with the future Emperor. He was deeply moved and surprised that a Russian heir to the throne should entertain sentiments so liberal, humane, and just, and should rejoice at the establishment of the French Republic and wish it success.

But the greatest shortcoming of this stout volume of twenty nine addresses and papers is its very misleading title. This article presents information on quality papers used by magazine publishers in the U.S. In the publishing trade, the "smooth-paper" magazines are those healthy, well-fed, lavishly illustrated papers which make life happier for the vast majority of the American reading public They sell up in the hundreds of thousands, even in the millions, they usually cost a nickel or a dime. Although persons of a leftish inclination prefer not to believe it, they are the literature of the masses. And they reflect, not what the masses are feeling, but what they would like to feel. Their editors are confident that they know what the public wants. And successful editorial guessing shows quickly enough in the balance sheet.

This article presents information on the closing down of many publishing houses which published British periodicals. Since the end of last year more than twenty-three journals have ceased publication or have merged with others, or have appeared less frequently than they did. All of them represented an extraordinary diversity of opinion and interest. The basic trouble causing the closure is the cost of paper. There are many types of paper, from newsprint to art paper, and the rise in cost varies from 100 to 160 percent, but the difficulties are also due to advertising fluctuations.

The article focuses on the activities and work done in Great Britain House of Lords. Between 1832 and 1867 the House of Lords performed many foolish and some dangerous experiments upon the temper and forbearance of the people, of which perhaps the most notable was the rejection of the Paper-duties bill in 1860. But during these years the House of Commons was, upon the whole, a sober-minded, independent body of English gentlemen, sent to Parliament to do the bidding of a sober-minded and intelligent body of electors. The measures favorably received by such a body of English gentlemen were prima facie reasonable measures, calculated to enhance the welfare of the people at large, and in no sense violent or revolutionary.

This article presents information on the book "Modern Painting," translated by Stuart Gilbert. Since the reproductions are printed directly on the page and not hand-tipped on coarser stock as before, the color has been intensified to a dangerous degree in order to compete successfully with the glare of the surrounding white paper. The fear of many of the originals will seem an anti-climax to the viewer who first saw them jazzed up into super-posters, but these are conventions of the post black-and-white age to which the public will have to become adjusted by education and experience.

This collection of Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov's notebooks and literary letters will probably not receive the attention it deserves, which is something of a pity. In two or three sentence entries scattered through these unpretentious notebooks the authentic Chekhov atmosphere is created. Put together with seeming carelessness and artlessness, the notes yet form a uniquely personal signature.
