Owing to the passive nature of liquid crystal (LC) materials, achieving luminous displays using pure LC materials is challenging. In addition, it is difficult to achieve a fast switching time using pristine ferroelectric LC devices without compromising their cell thickness. Herein, we have developed a fast switching and highly luminescent electro-optical device by dispersing a minute concentration of bimetallic nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs) having a spherical gold core and a silver shell within a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) host matrix, ZLI3654. Au@Ag core–shell NPs having synergic attributes of both counterparts were successfully synthesized by a facile seed-mediated route. The Au core helps to tune the shape of the Ag shell and provides enhanced electron density as well as improved stability against oxidation. Introducing nanoparticles induces little structural modifications to the host FLC, resulting in an improvement in the mesogenic alignment. Interestingly, ∼29-fold enhancement in the photoluminescence (PL) intensity is observed on dispersing 0.25 wt% of Au@Ag NPs into the FLC host matrix. The enhanced electromagnetic field in the FLC-nanocomposite is attributed to the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance of Au@Ag NPs, which strengthens the photon absorption rates by the FLC molecules, culminating in the massive enrichment of the PL intensity. In addition, the improved localized electric field inside the FLC device led to a noticeable enhancement in the spontaneous polarization, dielectric permittivity, and, most interestingly, ∼53% fastening in the switching time at an optimum concentration (0.25 wt%) of Au@Ag NPs. The improved electro-optical parameters of the Au@Ag NPs/FLC composite have been compared with the performance of both pristine Au NPs/FLC and Ag NPs/FLC composites, respectively, for the comprehensiveness of the study. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. The toxicity of amyloid to neuronal cell surfaces arises from interactions between small intermediate aggregates, namely amyloid oligomers, and the cell membrane. The nature of these interactions changes with age and disease progression. In our previous work, we demonstrated that both membrane composition and nanoscale structure play crucial roles in amyloid toxicity, and that membrane models mimicking healthy neuron were less affected by amyloid than model membranes mimicking AD neuronal membranes. This understanding introduces the possibility of modifying membrane properties with membrane-active molecules, such as melatonin, to protect them from amyloid-induced damage. In this study, we employed atomic force microscopy and localized surface plasmon resonance to investigate the protective effects of melatonin. We utilized synthetic lipid membranes that mimic the neuronal cellular membrane at various stages of AD and explored their interactions with amyloid- β (1–42) in the presence of melatonin. Our findings reveal that the early diseased membrane model is particularly vulnerable to amyloid binding and subsequent damage. However, melatonin exerts its most potent protective effect on this early-stage membrane. Although outstanding detectivities, InGaAs photodetectors for optic fiber communication are often costly due to the need for cooling. Therefore, cryogen-free and cost-effective alternatives working in telecommunication bands are highly desired. Here, we present a design of hot-electron photodetectors (HE PDs) with attributes of room-temperature operation and strong optical absorption over S and C bands (from 1460 to 1565 nm). The designed HE PD consists of a metal–semiconductor–metal hot-electron stack integrated with a front grating. Optical simulations reveal that mode hybridizations between Fabry–Pérot resonance and grating-induced surface plasmon excitation lead to high absorption efficiencies (≥0.9) covering S and C bands. Probability-based electrical calculations clarify that device responsivity is mainly determined by working wavelength on the premise of broadband strong absorption. Moreover, through comparison studies between the grating-assisted HE PD and purely planar microcavity system that serves as a reference, we highlight the design superiorities in average absorption and average responsivity with optimized values of 0.97 and 0.73 mA W−1, respectively. The fruit extract of Buchanania obovata and the eutectic-based ionic liquid were utilized, in an eco-friendly, inexpensive, simple method, for synthesizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The influence of the reducing, capping and stabilizing agents, in both mediums, on the structure, optical, and morphological properties of ZnO NPs was extensively investigated. The surface plasmon resonance peaks were observed at 340 nm and 320 nm for the fruit-based and the eutectic-based ionic liquid mediums, respectively, indicating the formation of ZnO NPs. XRD results confirmed the wurtzite structure of the ZnO NPs, exhibiting hexagonal phases in the diffraction patterns. The SEM and TEM images display that the biosynthesized ZnO NPs exhibit crystalline and hexagonal shape, with an average size of 40 nm for the fruit-based and 25 nm for the eutectic-based ionic liquid. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, revealed a value ∼13 m2 g−1 for ZnO NPs synthesized using the fruit extract and ∼29 m2 g−1 for those synthesized using the eutectic-based ionic liquid. The antibacterial activity of the biosynthesized ZnO NPs was assessed against clinically isolated Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacterial strains using the inhibition zone method. The ZnO NPs produced from the eutectic-based ionic liquids confirmed superior antibacterial activity against both S. aureus and E. coli compared to those mediated by the utilized fruit extract. At a concentration of 1000, the eutectic-based ionic liquid mediated ZnO NPs displayed a maximum inhibition zone of 16 mm against S. aureus, while against E. coli, a maximum inhibition zone of 15 mm was observed using the fruit extract mediated ZnO NPs. The results of this study showed that the biosynthesized ZnO NPs can be utilized as an efficient substitute to the frequently used chemical drugs and covering drug resistance matters resulted from continual usage of chemical drugs by users. We observed a unique interpillar gap-related surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) behavior of p -aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules from periodic TiO2 nanopillar arrays with three gap sizes of 191, 297 and 401 nm, which is completely different from that on Ag and Ni nanopillar arrays. Especially, the gap-size-dependent charge-transfer (CT) resonance enhancement from TiO2/Ni has been indicated through comparisons of variation trend of SERS intensities with inter-pillar gap size between TiO2/Ni and Ag/TiO2/Ni as well as Ni nanoarrays, and been confirmed by spectra of ultraviolet–visible absorption and photoluminescence. Results demonstrate that the CT resonance enhancement is more susceptible to the change of the gap size compared with the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) enhancement in TiO2/Ni nanoarrays. Hence, SPR and CT enhancement showing different variation trend and rate with the gap size that leads to a different relative contribution of CT resonance to the overall SERS enhancement as gap size changes, and consequently results in a unique gap-related SERS behavior for TiO2/Ni nanoarrays. The coherent perfect absorption (CPA) occurring in the graphene sheet suspended in air can be utilized to develop an ultrathin, ultra-broadband absorber working in the frequency range from a few hertz (Hz) to terahertz (THz) with perfect absorption. A graphene sheet is studied to induce the CPA to cover radio, microwave and lower THz frequency ranges. A graphene resonator able to provide the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is combined with the graphene sheet to provide CPA at either side of a thin dielectric layer forms metamaterial structure with the cavity and enhances the absorption bandwidth in the THz region by creating a resonance near quasi-CPA frequency. A dielectric silicon resonator is embedded in the structure, which creates dipolar resonances between the resonances obtained by the formed cavity between the graphene sheet and resonator. This enhances the absorption level in the THz region. The absorption bandwidth is further enhanced to 7 THz by including a graphene disc at the top of the silicon resonator. Thus, the multiple multi-order resonances occurring in the silicon dielectric and SPR of graphene resonators are merged with the phenomena of CPA occurring in the graphene sheets to extend the CPA bandwidth in the THz regime. The doping level of graphene or its tunable Fermi energy based on the applied DC electric field provides the tunability in the total obtained absorption bandwidth. Since hole trapping agents do not persist in the marine environment, it is more practical to test metal protection in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution so that the photocathodic protection (PCP) technique can be effectively applied in an actual marine environment. In this paper, Bi quantum dots (QDs) and ZIF-8 nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully deposited on TiO2 by hydrothermal and impregnation methods. The PCP performances of ZIF-8/Bi/TiO2 composites in the marine environment without hole trapping agents were evaluated, and compared with the performances of pure TiO2, Bi/TiO2 and ZIF-8/TiO2. The electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) fitting results demonstrate that the R ct value of the ZIF-8/Bi/TiO2 composite coupled with 316 stainless steel (SS) decreased from 7678 Ω cm2 to 519.3 Ω cm2 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, which is a decrease of about 14.8-fold compared with TiO2 under the same conditions. This indicates that the deposition of Bi QDs and ZIF-8 NPs on TiO2 nanotubes can improve the electron transport efficiency, which in turn slows down the rate of corrosion of 316 SS and significantly improves the PCP performance. This is not only attributable to the Schottky junction and heterojunction structures formed by Bi QDs and ZIF-8 NPs with TiO2, but also to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi QDs and the N–Ti–O bond structure formed between ZIF-8 and TiO2, leading to a lower electron–hole recombination efficiency and a higher electron transfer efficiency. The morphology-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanostructures has been widely utilized for designing sensors. One method relies on the color change of gold nanoparticles upon etching. In previous work, TMB2+ oxidized from 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was found to etch gold nanorods (AuNRs), leading to a spectrum of different colors. However, the preparation of TMB2+ needs the addition of a strong acid and other harsh conditions. Herein, a new colorimetric biosensing platform was developed using urchin-like gold nanoparticles (AuNUs). Compared with AuNRs, the etching of AuNUs can happen under mild conditions by TMB+ at pH 6, protecting enzymes and proteins from denaturation. The role of CTAB surfactant was dissected, and its bromide ions were found to be involved in the etching process. Based on these observations, a one-step colorimetric detection of H2O2 was realized by using horseradish peroxidase and H2O2 to oxidize TMB. Within 30 min, this system achieved a detection limit of 80 nM H2O2. This work offered fundamental insights into the etching of anisotropic gold nanostructures and optimized the etching conditions. Metal nanogaps can confine electromagnetic field into extremely small volumes, exhibiting strong surface plasmon resonance effect. Therefore, metal nanogaps show great prospects in enhancing light–matter interaction. However, it is still challenging to fabricate large-scale (centimeter scale) nanogaps with precise control of gap size at nanoscale, limiting the practical applications of metal nanogaps. In this work, we proposed a facile and economic strategy to fabricate large-scale sub-10 nm Ag nanogaps by the combination of atomic layer deposition (ALD) and mechanical rolling. The plasmonic nanogaps can be formed in the compacted Ag film by the sacrificial Al2O3 deposited via ALD. The size of nanogaps are determined by the twice thickness of Al2O3 with nanometric control. Raman results show that SERS activity depends closely on the nanogap size, and 4 nm Ag nanogaps exhibit the best SERS activity. By combining with other porous metal substrates, various sub-10 nm metal nanogaps can be fabricated over large scale. Ultraviolet photodetectors (UV PDs) have always been the research focus of semiconductor optoelectronic devices due to their wide application fields and diverse compositions. As one of the best-known n-type metal oxides in third-generation semiconductor electronic devices, ZnO nanostructures and their assembly with other materials have received extensive research. In this paper, the research progress of different types of ZnO UV PDs is reviewed, and the effects of different nanostructures on ZnO UV PDs are summarized in detail. In addition, physical effects such as piezoelectric photoelectric effect, pyroelectric effect, and three ways of heterojunction, noble metal local surface plasmon resonance enhancement and formation of ternary metal oxides on the performance of ZnO UV PDs were also investigated. The applications of these PDs in UV sensing, wearable devices, and optical communication are displayed. Tin-based gas sensors have been developed for many years owing to their advantages of low price, high response and stability. However, selectivity remains a significant issue. Herein, Ag-SnO2 nanofibers are synthesized using AgCl as the doping reagent. The 3%Ag-SnO2 nanofibers sensors show a high response of 68 toward 1 ppm H2S at 90 °C. Besides, the sensor with 3% AgCl possesses the shortest response time about 136 s at 150 °C which is only 30% value of the sensor without AgCl doping. It is also demonstrated that the nanofibers show a high selectivity towards H2S. According to the ex situ x-ray photoelectron spectrum and x-ray diffraction results, AgCl was transferred to Ag2S after Ag-SnO2 was exposed to H2S, and reversible transformation between Ag2SO4 and Ag2S was the main mechanism for H2S detection. Compared with pure SnO2 nanofiber sensors, the presence of Ag2S with high conductivity greatly affects the resistance to H2S, resulting in high selectivity and response. This mechanism differs from that of the transformation between Ag2O and Ag2SO4. This study may provide a new strategy for the design and investigation of sensors with high selectivity. A substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in a sandwich configuration, noble metal/analyte/defect-rich metal oxide, is demonstrated for the detection of methylene blue(MB). The sandwich structure (Ag/MB/SUMoO3) is fabricated by physical vapour deposition of Ag nanoparticles over the MB analytes that are adsorbed on sea urchin MoO3 (SUMoO3). SUMoO3 are grown on a glass substrate by chemical bath deposition. The morphology of the fabricated sandwich structures shows serrated spikes of MoO3 from the core region decorated with strings of silver nanoparticles. The silver-decoration and the oxygen defects of SUMoO3 promote absorption in the visible region and facilitate charge transfer between MB and SUMoO3, which are beneficial for achieving superior SERS properties in this configuration compared to the contribution from individual components alone. The sandwich structure is able to detect the MB molecule up to 100 nM with an enhancement factor of 8.1 × 106. The relative standard deviation of SERS intensity for the 1618 cm−1 peak of MB across the substrate is 29.2%. The configuration offers stability to SERS substrate under ambient conditions. The combined effect of charge transfer, surface plasmon resonance, and MB resonance results in the improved SERS detection of MB molecules with the Ag/MB/SUMoO3 sandwich structure. This work investigates the effect of plasma treatment on the morphology and composition of 15 × 15 mm2 silver nanoparticle (70–80 nm) thin films. The silver nanoparticles are deposited onto thermal silica (SiO2/Si) substrates by spin-coating, then they are treated by an open-to-air microwave argon plasma jet characterized by a neutral gas temperature of 2200 ± 200 K. Scanning electron microscopy analysis reveals that the number of isolated nanoparticles in the film sample decreases after exposure to multiple jet passes, and that polygonal structures with sharp corners and edges are produced. Similar structures with much rounder edges are obtained after conventional thermal annealing at temperatures up to 1300 K. Based on localized surface plasmon resonance analysis in the range of 350–800 nm, the main extinction band of silver nanoparticles experiences a redshift after treatment with the plasma jet or with thermal annealing. Moreover, both treatments induce surface oxidation of the nanoparticles, as evidenced by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. However, only the plasma-exposed samples exhibit a significant rise in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal of oxidized silver at 960 cm−1. 29 × 29 μ m2 mappings of hyperspectral Raman IMAging (RIMA) and multivariate curve resolution analysis by log-likelihood maximization demonstrate that the SERS signal is controlled by large-scale micrometer domains that exhibit sharp corners and edges. Herein, we proposed a simple non-lithographic way to fabricate hierarchical Al nanopit arrays performed as deep ultraviolet (DUV, 200–300 nm) refractive index sensing. Only by adjusting the Al deposition thickness on the Al nanopit array, the hierarchical Al nanopit arrays with tunable plasmonic properties in the DUV region were obtained. The prepared hierarchical Al nanopit arrays are of very good time stability and its RI sensitivity and concentration detection limit of adenine ethanol solution reach 311 nm/RIU and 5 × 10 − 6 M , respectively, as the Al deposition thickness is 60 nm. Furthermore, the electric field distribution simulation results show that high RI sensing characteristic are mainly attributed to the local surface plasmon resonance. Diffraction limit has been the constraint of the nanostructure fabrication. Because the scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) can work in the evanescent near-field region, its application in nano-processing has received extensive attention from researchers globally. In this paper, we combined nanosecond laser with cantilevered SNOM probe. Utilizing the high precision of the confinement and enhancement effect of probe tip and the high instantaneous energy of the laser, we realized nanostructure fabrication and in situ detection on Au nano-film. Feature sizes down to 47 nm full width at half maximum were fabricated. We investigated the laser propagation through the SNOM tip aperture and the light field intensity distribution on the surface of substrate theoretically. The calculation results demonstrate that the laser is highly restricted within the SNOM aperture and enhanced on the exit plane at the rim of aperture. After the transmission, the light field intensity distribution on the surface of the Au nano-film was enhanced due to the localized surface plasmon resonance. The thermal distribution on the surface of Au nano-film indicates that the peak of the temperature distribution appeared at the surface right underneath the center of the aperture. High-performance strain sensors have received extensive attention due to their wide range of applications in pulsebeat detection, speech recognition, motion detection, and blood pressure monitoring. However, it is difficult to simultaneously attain high sensitivity and excellent stretchability. In this work, a strain sensor based on modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and conductive hybrid particles of silver nanowires (AgNWs)/graphene was successfully fabricated. A facile solvothermal polymerization process was used to change the structure of cross-linking networks and to obtain the PDMS elastomer with excellent stretchability. The application of the modified PDMS endows the strain sensor with a large strain range (∼20%), which is 100% higher than that of the strain sensor with unmodified PDMS. The AgNWs/graphene hybrid particles were prepared by a simple coprecipitation, reduction, and drying method. AgNWs serve as bridges between graphene sheets, endowing the strain sensor with a large gauge factor (GF = 400). The stability of the strain sensor was also verified. Besides, the strain sensor was successfully used in fields such as finger bending and speech recognition. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) are readily used nanoparticles which finds applications in fields like biosensors, drug delivery, optical bioimaging and many state of art systems used for detection. In the recent years fiber optic sensors have seen utilization of Au-NPs along with other nanoparticles for implementation of sensors for sensing various biomolecules like cholesterol, glucose, and uric acid. The cancer cells, creatinine and bacteria can also be detected with the fiber optic sensors. Given the significance of Au-NPs in fiber optic sensors, the current work is a review of the synthesis, the common methods used for characterization, and the applications of Au-NPs. In this work, we report the fabrication and spectroscopic characterization of subwavelength aluminum nanocavitiesâ€"consisting of hexamer or tetramer clusters of sub 10 nm width Al nanorodsâ€"with tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) energies on suspended SiN x membranes. Here the volume plasmon (VP) and LSPR modes of lithographically-fabricated Al nanocavities are revealed by low-loss electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). We show that the existence of grain boundaries (GBs) in these nanocavities results in shifts in the VP energy and a reduction in the VP lifetime. We map the VP energy and lifetime across GBs and we observe a decrease in VP energy and lifetime at GBs that is consistent with a reduction in free carrier density and increased plasmon scattering at these locations. Dipolar LSPR modes resonant in the UV and blue regions of the electromagnetic spectrum as well as higher-energy optically dark quadrupolar and hexapolar LSPR modes are also observed and mapped by STEM and EELS. All LSPR modes are confirmed via electromagnetic simulations based on the boundary element method. Both tetramer and hexamer structures support the excitation of dipolar bright and dipolar dark modes. Finally, we find that asymmetries in fabricated nanorod hexamer and tetramer nanocavities result in a mode mixing leading to a shift in dipolar dark LSPR modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sensor based on plasmon-waveguide resonance (PWR) exhibits an impressive narrow linewidth and has attracted extensive attention in plasmon label-free sensing. However, the low surface electric field intensity limits the detection ability of biomolecules, where the refractive index changes are restricted at the sensor surface. In this study, we study the coupling of PWR and multiple plasma modes in a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM), combining narrow linewidth and electric field enhancement advantages. The PWR-HMM sensor includes a gold film, lossless dielectric layer, and metal/dielectric multilayer HMM array composed of 2-layer Au/Al2O3 stacks. The evanescent field of PWR is used to excite multiple plasma modes in the HMM. The figure of merit of the proposed structure reaches 5417/RIU owing to the existence of lossless dielectric layer, which is 11.7 times than the conventional gold film structure. The maximum bulk sensitivity of the PWR-HMM sensor was 43 000 nm/RIU. In comparison with PWR, the surface electric field intensity and the surface sensitivity of PWR-HMM increase by four and two times, respectively. Furthermore, comparing the sensing performance of the PWR-HMM sensor and PWR-nanoparticle (NP) sensor (coupling PWR and localized surface plasmon resonance), it was found that PWR-HMM has 20% higher surface sensitivity than the PWR-NP. A sensing mechanism coupling PWR and multiple plasma modes in the HMMs opens a gate to significantly improve the PWR sensors performance, which is expected to be used to resolve urgent issues in biological, medical and clinical applications. Gold nanorods (AuNRs) possess a high optical nonlinear coefficient, ultrafast optical response speed and widely tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength covering the visible and near infrared region. Therefore, they are extensively investigated for many optical applications. However, the poor thermal stability of the AuNRs seriously restricts their practical performance. In addition, for many applications, such as optical communication or laser modulation, AuNRs have to be combined with transparent solids, for example polymers, glass or crystals to make devices. Here, we report on the preparation of 0.23 mg AuNR dispersed methyl silicone resin (MSR) with longitudinal LSPR (L-LSPR) wavelength (1450 nm) in the optical communication window. We found that AuNR-silicone composites possess high thermal stability. After calcination in ambient environment at a temperature of 250 °C for 10 h, the L-LSPR peak of the sample can remain longer than 1380 nm, implying that the NR shape of the Au particles was well maintained. Using the open-aperture Z-scan technique, the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the composites was measured as âˆ'11.71 cm GWâˆ'1, higher than many nonlinear materials. Transitioning plasmonic metasurfaces into practical, low-cost applications requires meta-atom designs that focus on ease of manufacturability and a robustness with respect to structural imperfections and nonideal substrates. It also requires the use of inexpensive, earth-abundant metals such as Al for plasmonic properties. In this study, we focus on combining two aspects of plasmonic metasurfacesâ€"visible coloration and Fano resonancesâ€"in a morphology amenable to scalable manufacturing. The resulting plasmonic metasurface is a candidate for reflective colorimetric sensing. Active targeting is a promising approach for the treatment of viral infections. In particular, site-specific formulations for the treatment of HIV infection may overcome challenges associated with current ARV regimens. In this study we explored active targeting by synthesizing a gold nanoparticle construct decorated with an anti-CD4 cyclic peptide. The aim was to demonstrate selectivity of the system for the CD4 receptor and to deliver the RNA payload into T-lymphocytes. Colloidal gold nanoparticles functionalized with N -succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldithio) propionate (SPDP) were formed by a one-pot synthesis method where thiol modified polyethyleneimine (PEI) was mixed with chloroauric acid. PEI-SPDP AuNPs (gold nanoparticles) were conjugated to an anti-CD4 peptide and loaded with RNA. We measured toxicity and uptake using TZM-bl and HeLa cells. Our findings show that the nanoparticles bind selectively to CD4 + cells. UVâ€"vis characterisation of the nanoparticles revealed a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 527 nm, corresponding to a 6 nm diameter. HRTEM of the complete nanoparticles visualised circular shaped particles with average diameter of ∼7 nm. The polydispersity index was calculated to be 0.08, indicating monodispersity of complete NPS in solution. Through the pyridine-2-thione assay each nanoparticle was calculated to carry 1.37 × 105 SPDP molecules available for peptide binding. Flow cytometry showed that 13.6% of TZM-bl cells, and 0.14% of HeLa cells retained fluorescence after an overnight incubation, an indication of system binding. Silver nanoparticles are one of the most extensively used metallic nanomaterials due to their unusual physical and chemical properties as well as their promising applications in a wide range of different fields. In this study, a non-thermal atmospheric pressure helium plasma jet was used to successfully synthesize silver nanoparticles with silver nitrate as a precursor and trisodium citrate as a capping agent. The browning of the solution after only 5 min of plasma irradiation is a result of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) from the obtained silver nanoparticles. The SPR was confirmed by the presence of an absorption band in the visible range between 400 and 450 nm demonstrated in the UVâ€"vis spectra. The effect of different chemical parameters such as the concentration of silver nitrate and the concentration of citrate on the silver nanoparticles have been studied. These nanoparticles were further characterized using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. Therefore, the plasma jet was advantageous to fast produce silver nanoparticles in friendly conditions. In addition, the used experimental setup allows further studies in different solvents conditions and with different capping agents. Single chain variable D2B antibody fragments (scFvD2Bs) exhibit high affinity binding to prostate specific membrane antigens overexpressed in metastatic prostate cancer (PC). Conjugation of scFvD2B to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) would enhance its stability and plasma half-life circulation to shuttle theranostic agents in PC. In this study, we synthesized PEGylated scFvD2B-AuNPs (AuNPs-scFvD2B-PEG) and tested their integrity, biocompatibility, and immunogenicity in freshly withdrawn human blood. Prior to blood incubation, Zeta potential measurements, UVâ€"Vis spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to assess the physicochemical properties of our nano-complexes in the presence or absence of PEGylation. A surface plasmon resonance band shift of 2 and 4 nm confirmed the successful coating for AuNPs-scFvD2B and AuNPs-scFvD2B-PEG, respectively. Likewise, DLS revealed a size increase of ∼3 nm for AuNPs-scFvD2B and ∼19 nm for AuNPs-scFvD2B-PEG. Zeta potential increased from âˆ'34 to âˆ'19 mV for AuNPs-scFvD2B and reached âˆ'3 mV upon PEGylation. Similar assessment measures were applied post-incubation in human blood with additional immunogenicity tests, such as hemolysis assay, neutrophil function test, and pyridine formazan extraction. Interestingly, grafting PEG chains on AuNPs-scFvD2B precluded the binding of blood plasma proteins and reduced neutrophil activation level compared with naked AuNPs-citrate counterparts. Most likely, a hydrated negative PEG cloud shielded the NPs rendering blood compatiblility with less than 10% hemolysis. We design and propose a five-band absorber based on graphene metamaterial for the terahertz (THz) sensing field. The localized surface plasmon resonances of patterned graphene are excited, contributing to five tunable ultra-narrow absorption peaks, which are specified by the electric field distributions. Moreover, the absorber is insensitive to different polarization modes and incident angles. When increasing the Fermi level of the patterned graphene, which is composed of a round ring and a square ring connected by four thin wires, the resonant frequencies exhibit distinct blue shifts. For refractive index sensing, due to the addition of a continuous dielectric groove, the theoretical results show that the maximum averaged normalized sensitivity, Q factor, and FOM can reach 0.647 RIUâˆ'1 (refractive index unit, RIU), 355.94, and 215.25 RIUâˆ'1, indicating that the sensing performances are further enhanced compared with previous works. The appealing properties of tunable direct wide bandgap, high-temperature robustness and chemical hardness, make Al x Ga1âˆ' x N a promising candidate for fabricating robust solar-blind photodetectors (PDs). In this work, we have utilized the optical phenomenon of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in metal nanoparticles (NPs) to significantly enhance the performance of solar-blind Al0.4Ga0.6N metalâ€"semiconductorâ€"metal PDs that exhibit high-temperature robustness. We demonstrate that the presence of palladium (Pd) NPs leads to a remarkable enhancement by nearly 600, 300, and 462%, respectively, in the photo-to-dark current ratio (PDCR), responsivity, and specific detectivity of the Al0.4Ga0.6N PD at the wavelength of 280 nm. Using the optical power density of only 32 ÎĽ W cmâˆ'2 at âˆ'10 V, maximum values of ∼3 × 103, 2.7 AWâˆ'1, and 2.4 × 1013 Jones are found for the PDCR, responsivity and specific detectivity, respectively. The experimental observations are supported by finite difference time domain simulations, which clearly indicate the presence of LSPR in Pd NPs decorated on the surface of Al0.4Ga0.6N. The mechanism behind the enhancement is investigated in detail, and is ascribed to the LSPR induced effects, namely, improved optical absorption, enhanced local electric field and LSPR sensitization effect. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is recognized as one of the most favored techniques for enhancing Raman signals. The morphology of the SERS substrate profoundly affects molecular Raman spectra. This study aimed to construct a ring-mounted nanostructured substrate via liquidâ€"liquid two-phase self-assembly incorporated with anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane transfer techniques. High-density nanoparticles (NPs) assembled on AAO membranes were ascribed to reduce the diameters of the nanopores, with Auâ€"Ag alloy NPs to regulate the dielectric constant so as to reveal the local surface plasmon resonance tunability. SERS engineered in this way allowed for the fabrication of a ring-mounted nanostructured substrate where the distribution density of NPs and dielectric constant could be independently fine-tuned. High SERS activity of the substrate was revealed by detecting the enhanced factor of crystal violet and rhodamine 6G molecules, which was up to 1.56 × 106. Moreover, SERS of thiram target molecules confirmed the supersensitivity and repeatability of the substrate as a practical application. Optical metamaterials are widely used in electromagnetic wave modulation due to their sub-wavelength feature sizes. In this paper, a method to plate an achiral nanopillar array with chiral coating by the secondary effect in focused ion beam induced deposition is proposed. Guided by the pattern defined in a bitmap with variable residence time, the beam scan strategy suppresses the interaction between adjacent nanostructures. A uniform chiral coating is formed on the target nanostructure without affecting the adjacent nanostructure, under carefully selected beam parameters and the rotation angle of the sample stage. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy results show that the chiral film has high purity metal, which enables the generation of localized surface plasmon resonances and causes the circular dichroism (CD) under circularly polarized light illumination. The variation behaviors of the morphology, transmission, and sheet resistance of the surface Ag/AgO nano-network (NNW) structures fabricated under different illumination conditions and with different Ag deposition thicknesses and thermal annealing temperatures in forming initial Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are studied. Generally, an NNW structure with a smaller mesh size or a denser branch distribution has a lower transmission and a lower sheet resistance level. Under the fabrication condition of a broader illumination spectrum, a lower thermal annealing temperature, or a thicker Ag deposition, we can obtain an NNW structure of a smaller mesh size. The mesh size of an NNW structure is basically controlled by the seed density of Brownian tree (BT) at the beginning of light illumination. A BT seed can be formed through a stronger local localized surface plasmon resonance for accelerating Ag oxidation in a certain region. Once an Ag/AgO BT seed is formed, the surrounding Ag NPs are reorganized to form the branches of a BT. Multiple BTs are connected to form a large-area NNW structure, which can serve as a transparent conductor. Under the fabrication conditions of a broader illumination spectrum, 3 nm Ag deposition, and 100 °C thermal annealing, we can implement an NNW structure to achieve ∼1.15 ÎĽ m in mesh size, ∼90 Ω sqâˆ'1 in sheet resistance, and 93%â€"77% in transmittance within the wavelength range between 370 and 700 nm. We developed a rapid synthesis method for monodispersed Auâ€"Ag alloy nanosponges (NSs) with high density of ‘hotspots’ for near-infrared surface enhanced Raman scattering (NIR-SERS) by a selective laser-irradiation melting and chemical dealloying process. Au@Ag coreâ€"shell nanocubes were first in situ converted into solid alloyed Auâ€"Ag nanospheres by a rapid laser irradiation igniting quick fusion and quenching process within two minutes. The alloyed Auâ€"Ag nanospheres transformed into Auâ€"Ag alloy NSs after treated by a chemical dealloying process. Different from traditional thermal annealing, it thus can effectively avoid the heat fusion between nanoparticles, and maintain the alloyed Auâ€"Ag nanospheres and NSs in high monodispersity. Importantly, due to the strong plasmonic coupling in nanopores (pore size less than 10 nm), the obtained Auâ€"Ag alloy NSs show a broad and intense localized surface plasmon resonances absorption ranging from visible to near-Infrared region (500â€"1200 nm). The accessibly open structures for absorbing targets and high-density of ‘NIR-hotspots’ endow the Auâ€"Ag alloy NSs substrate with superior sensitivity in NIR-SERS detection of 4-aminothiophenol with an enhancement factor of ∼107. Thermally responsive polymers present an interesting avenue for tuning the optical properties of nanomaterials on their surfaces by varying their periodicity and shape using facile processing methods. Gold bowtie nanoantenna arrays are fabricated using nanosphere lithography on prestressed polyolefin (PO), a thermoplastic polymer, and optical properties are investigated via a combination of spectroscopy and electromagnetic simulations to correlate shape evolution with optical response. Geometric features of bowtie nanoantennas evolve by annealing at temperatures between 105 °C and 135 °C by releasing the degree of prestress in PO. Due to the higher modulus of Au versus PO, compressive stress occurs on Au bowtie regions on PO, which leads to surface buckling at the two highest annealing temperatures; regions with a 5 nm gap between bowtie nanoantennas are observed and the average reduction is 75%. Reflectance spectroscopy and full-wave electromagnetic simulations both demonstrate the ability to tune the plasmon resonance wavelength with a window of approximately 90 nm in the range of annealing temperatures investigated. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering measurements demonstrate that maximum enhancement is observed as the excitation wavelength approaches the plasmon resonance of Au bowtie nanoantennas. Both the size and morphology tunability offered by PO allows for customizing optical response.

Development of simple and accurate methods for the detection of As3+ is highly desirable and technically important. In this work, a highly sensitive and selective long-period fiber gratings sensor based on surface plasmon resonance was developed for As3+ detection by designing glutathione-functionalized Au nanoparticles as a signal amplification tag. Based on the chemical interaction between As3+ and glutathione, the self-assembling glutathione on the surface of the gold film combines selectively with As3+, and then anchors the glutathione-functionalized Au nanoparticles, which changes the refractive index of the surrounding environment, resulting in a shift of the transmission spectrum. Results show that the sensor could detect As3+ with concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 2 ppb. The sensor exhibited excellent specificity for As3+ against other metal ions, such as Na+, Fe3+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Ba2+, and Co3+. The fiber sensor was successfully employed to detect As3+ in pond water samples, demonstrating that it has the potential for As3+ detection with the advantages of low cost, high sensitivity, and a simple structure. High-sensitivity optical imaging can be achieved through improving upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) efficiency of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-enhanced excitation and emission. Herein, we report a type of UCPL nanoprobe, Au nanospheres assemblage@Gd2O3:Yb3+/Ln3+ (Ln = Er, Ho, Tm), which exhibits emission enhancements from 46- to 96-fold as compared with its Au-free counterparts. The aggregation and interaction among Au nanospheres embedded inside the nanoprobe brings about three characteristic LSPR peaks in visible and near-infrared regions according to simulated and experimental absorption spectra, resulting in both excitation and emission fields simultaneously intensified all through the entire nanoprobe. We addressed a characteristic wavelength dependence on emission amplifications, which could be elucidated by a LSPR-enhanced UCPL mechanism and relevant rate equations that we addressed. The nanoprobe was verified to have a superior capability for optical bio-imaging with a negligible toxicity in vitro and in vivo. This study realizes a synchronous double-field-enhanced upconversion of optical nanoprobe in situ, and may gain an insight into its mechanism underlying for LSPR-induced UCPL enhancement. Synergistic cancer therapies have attracted wide attention owing to their multi-mode tumor inhibition properties. Especially, photo-responsive photoimmunotherapy demonstrates an emerging cancer treatment paradigm that significantly improved treatment efficiency. Herein, near-infrared-II responsive ovalbumin functionalized Gold-Genipin nanosystem (Au-G-OVA NRs) was designed for immunotherapy and deep photothermal therapy of breast cancer. A facile synthesis method was employed to prepare the homogeneous Au nanorods (Au NRs) with good dispersion. The nanovaccine was developed further by the chemical cross-linking of Au-NRs, genipin and ovalbumin. The Au-G-OVA NRs outstanding aqueous solubility, and biocompatibility against normal and cancer cells. The designed NRs possessed enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which extended the NIR absorption in the second window, enabling promising photothermal properties. Moreover, genipin coating provided complimentary red fluorescent and prepared Au-G-OVA NRs showed significant intracellular encapsulation for efficient photoimmunotherapy outcomes. The designed nanosystem possessed deep photothermal therapy of breast cancer and 90% 4T1 cells were ablated by Au-G-OVA NRs (80 μ g ml -1 concentration) after 1064 nm laser irradiation. In addition, Au-G-OVA NRs demonstrated outstanding vaccination phenomena by facilitating OVA delivery, antigen uptake, maturation of bone marrow dendritic cells, and cytokine IFN- γ secretion for tumor immunosurveillance. Bimetallic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have the potential to overcome the drawbacks of individual metals, but the effect of the configuration of the two metallic layers on the performance of the sensors has not been explored. This study examines the influence of different positions of a thin layer of silver in relation to a copper layer on the sensitivity of such a bimetallic SPR sensor. The design of this configuration aims to improve the SPR reflectance curve and strengthen the evanescent electric field to improve the sensor efficiency. Our findings indicate that, by optimizing the architectures of SPR sensors and using a silver-copper bimetallic structure, we can achieve superior performance compared to devices that utilize only silver or copper. The optimized Ag (5 nm)/Cu (55 nm) sensor design, with the best sensitivity of 299.09° RIU -1 , can detect a change of 0.43°/(g dl -1 ) for hemoglobin in blood, 0.35°/(g dl -1 ) for glucose in urine, and 0.1°/(%) for methanol in ethanol. Chiral plasmonic nanostructures have become a promising platform for polarization converters and molecular analysis. However, the circular dichroism (CD) of planar chiral plasmonic nanostructures is always weak and difficult for dynamic adjustment. In this work, graphene sheets (GSs) are introduced in planar metal chiral split rings (MCSRs) to enhance and dynamically adjust their CD effect. The chiral split rings consist of rotated big and small split rings. Simulation results show that the plasmonic coupling between MCSRs and GSs can enhance the absorption and CD spectra of MCSRs at two resonant wavelengths. The surface current distributions reveal that the CD signals are due to the localized surface plasmon resonances on the big and small split rings, respectively. The loss distributions illustrate that the increased loss mainly locates in GSs. In addition, the CD spectra of MCSRs/GSs can be dynamically adjusted and influenced by the Fermi energy of GSs, the geometric parameters of MCSRs and, the mediums in the environment. It can be used to detect the environmental temperature and concentration. Branched AuNPs usually have two or more local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption bands due to their structural anisotropy, and the LSPR performance is more sensitive to the changes of environmental refractive index than that of spherical AuNPs. The design and preparation of branched AuNPs as colorimetric probes is expected to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of detection of targets. In this paper, branched AuNPs were innovatively synthesized via hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI) fabricated and capped AuNPs as seeds and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as template agent. The branched AuNPs were characterized by TEM, DLS, zeta potentials and UV–vis spectra. Using the branched AuNPs as a colorimetric probe, the detection system for Hg2+ and Ag+ showed bright color changes from blue to orange and blue to green based on the morphological evolution of branched AuNPs. The branched AuNPs could selectively detect Hg2+ and Ag+ at concentrations as low as 77 and 140 nM, respectively. Moreover, this unusual colorimetric method has been successfully used in real water samples and has great potential as a simple, rapid, sensitive and selective method for the detection of Hg2+ and Ag+. The fabrication of strain sensors with high sensitivity, large sensing range and excellent stability is highly desirable because of their promising applications in human motion detection, human-machine interface and electric skin, etc. Herein, by introducing a highly conductive silver nanowire (AgNW) layer between two serried silver nanoparticle (AgNP) layers, forming a sandwich structure, a strain sensor with high sensitivity (a large gauge factor of 2.8 × 105), large sensing range (up to 80% strain) and excellent stability (over 1000 cycles) can be achieved. A combination of experimental and mechanism studies shows that the high performance of the obtained strain sensor is ascribed to the synergy of the highly conductive AgNW layer, astatic AgNP layers and the presence of large cracks in stretching. As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained strain sensor can be used for highly effective human motion detection ranging from large scale motions, i.e. kneel bending and wrist flexion, to subtle scale motions, i.e. pulse and swallowing. High energy and high flux protons are used in proton therapy and the impact of proton radiation is a major reliability concern for electronics and solar cells in low earth orbit as well as in the trapped belts. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), due to their unique characteristics, have been considered for the construction of proton and other radiation sensors. Here, a single wall CNT based proton sensor was fabricated on FR4 substrate and its response to 150 MeV proton irradiation was studied. The change in the resistance of the nanotubes upon irradiation is exploited as the sensing mechanism and the sensor shows good sensitivity to proton radiation. Proton radiation induces dissociation of ambient oxygen, followed by the adsorption of oxygen species on the nanotube surface, which influences its electrical characteristics. Since the nanotube film is thin and the 150 MeV protons are expected to penetrate into and interact with the substrate, control experiments were conducted to study the impact on FR4 substrate without the nanotubes. The dielectric loss tangent or dissipation factor of FR4 increases after irradiation due to an increase in the cross-linking of the resin arising from the degradation of the polymer network. Measuring solution concentration plays an important role in chemical, biochemical, clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and biological analyses. In this work, we develop a transmission-mode localized surface plasmon resonance sensor chip system and convenient method which is highly efficient, highly sensitive for detection sensing using multimode fiber. The plasmonically active sensor's surface AuNPs with high-density NPs were decorated onto 1 cm sensing length of various clad-free fiber in the form of homogeneous monolayer utilizing a self-assembly process for immobilization of the target molecule. The carboxyl bond is formed through a functional reaction on the sensor head. Using the significance in the refractive index difference and numerical aperture, which is caused by a variation in the concentration of measuring bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein which can be accurately measured by the output signal. The refractive index variation of the medium analyte layer can be converted to signal output power change at the He–Ne wavelength of 632.8 nm. The sensor detection limit was estimated to be 0.075 ng ml−1 for BSA protein which shows high sensitivity compared to other types of label-free optical biosensors. This also leads to a possibility of finding the improvement in the sensitivity label-free biosensors. Three-dimensional Au network films with flexibility and transferability were fabricated based on sputtering deposition onto electrospun nanofibers as a template. The films are constructed using long Au nanotubes that are cross-linked with each other and that have dense nanoparticles on the tube wall surface. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks for the films are tunable in a wide range, from visible light to the near-infrared region, by tuning the inner diameter and/or wall thickness of the nanotubes. Such structured film exhibits significant surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity with good signal uniformity and stability, and possesses great potential in the in situ detection of trace organic pollutants on a solid surface by simple transferring. Gold bipyramid (GBP) nanoparticles are promising for a range of biomedical applications, including biosensing and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, due to their favorable optical properties and ease of chemical functionalization. Here we report improved synthesis methods, including preparation of gold seed particles with an increased shelf life of ∼1 month, and preparation of GBPs with significantly shortened synthesis time (< 1 h). We also report methods for the functionalization and bioconjugation of the GBPs, including functionalization with alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and bioconjugation with proteins via carbodiimide cross-linking. Binding of specific antibodies to the nanoparticle-bound proteins was subsequently observed via localized surface plasmon resonance sensing. Rabbit IgG and goat anti-Rabbit IgG antibodies were used as a model system for antibody-antigen interactions. Energy conversion to generate hot electrons through the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in metallic nanostructures is an emerging strategy in photovoltaics and photocatalytic devices. Important factors for surface plasmon and hot electron generation are the size, shape, and materials of plasmonic metal nanostructures, which affect LSPR excitation, absorbance, and hot electron collection. Here, we fabricated the ordered structure of metal-semiconductor plasmonic nanodiodes using nanosphere lithography and reactive ion etching. Two types of hole-shaped plasmonic nanostructures with the hole diameter of 280 and 115 nm were fabricated on Au/TiO2 Schottky diodes. We show that hot electron flow can be manipulated by changing the size of plasmonic nanostructures on the Schottky diode. We show that the short-circuit photocurrent changes and the incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency results exhibit the peak shift depending on the structures. These phenomena are explicitly observed with finite difference time domain simulations. The capability of tuning the morphology of plasmonic nanostructure on the Schottky diode can give rise to new possibilities in controlling hot electron generation and developing novel hot-electron-based energy conversion devices. Enhancing the light coupling efficiency of large-area monolayer molybdenum disulfide (1L-MoS2) is one of the major challenges for its successful applications in optoelectronics and photonics. Herein, we demonstrate a dramatically enhanced photoluminescence (PL) emission from direct chemical vapor deposited monolayer MoS2 on a fluorine-doped TiO2/Au nanoparticle plasmonic substrate, where the PL intensity is enhanced by nearly three orders of magnitude, highest among the reported values. The formation of TiO2/Au/1L-MoS2 ternary core–shell heterojunction is evidenced by the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman analyses. Localized surface plasmon resonance induced enhanced absorption and improved light coupling in the system was revealed from the UV–vis absorption and Raman spectroscopy analyzes. Our studies reveal that the observed giant PL enhancement in 1L-MoS2 results from two major aspects: firstly, the heavy p-doping of the MoS2 lattice is caused by the transfer of the excess electrons from the MoS2 to TiO2 at the interface, which enhances the neutral exciton emissions and restrains the trion formation. Secondly, the localized surface plasmon in Au NPs underneath the 1L-MoS2 film initiates exciton-plasmon coupling between excitons of the 1L-MoS2 and surface plasmons of the Au NPs at the MoS2/Au interface. The PL and Raman analyses further confirm the p-doping effect. We isolate the contributions of plasmon enhancement from the theoretical calculation of the field enhancement factor using the effective medium approximation of plasmonic heterostructure, which is in excellent agreement with the experimental data. This work paves a way for the rational design of the plasmonic heterostructure for the effective improvement in the light emission efficiency of 1L-MoS2, and may enable engineering the different contributions to enhance the optoelectronic performance of 2D heterostructures. Hybrid noble metal-semiconductor oxide nanostructures often provide unique and synergetic functionalities that are highly desirable in various practical applications. However, the fabrication of such systems with desired functionalities using cost-effective techniques is still a great challenge. In this work, we report a facile route for the preparation of novel Ag/SnO2 nano-obelisk arrayed thin films on silicon substrates by spray pyrolysis and thermal evaporation techniques. The prepared samples exhibited broadband antireflectance in both UV and visible regions attributed to the refractive index gradient and scattering provided by the nano-obelisk arrays. The localised surface plasmon resonance of silver nanocaps further enhanced the light absorption contributing to the antireflective property of the hybrid system. Ag/SnO2 nano-obelisk arrayed thin film exhibited excellent SERS performance with an enhancement factor of 1.13 × 108 with a limit of detection value of 10−12 M for the trace detection of R6G dye. In addition, Ag/SnO2 nano-obelisk arrayed thin film based SERS substrate exhibited good homogeneity across the measured spots and outstanding stability which are essential for quantitative field analysis. The results indicate that the Ag/SnO2 nano-obelisk arrayed thin films are efficient SERS substrates with the merits of having the ease of production, high sensitivity and stability for various practical sensing applications. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) represent a relatively simple nanosystem to be synthesised and functionalized. AuNPs offer numerous advantages over different nanomaterials, primarily due to highly optimized protocols for their production with sizes in the range 1–150 nm and shapes, spherical, nanorods (AuNRs), nanocages, nanostars or nanoshells (AuNSs), just to name a few. AuNPs possess unique properties both from the optical and chemical point of view. AuNPs can absorb and scatter light with remarkable efficiency. Their outstanding interaction with light is due to the conduction electrons on the metal surface undergoing a collective oscillation when they are excited by light at specific wavelengths. This oscillation, known as a localized surface plasmon resonance, causes the absorption and scattering intensities of AuNPs to be significantly higher than identically sized non-plasmonic nanoparticles. In addition, AuNP absorption and scattering properties can be tuned by controlling the particle size, shape, and the local refractive index near the particle surface. By the chemical side, AuNPs offer the advantage of functionalization with therapeutic agents through covalent and ionic binding, which can be useful for biomedical applications, with particular emphasis on cancer treatments. Functionalized AuNPs exhibit good biocompatibility and controllable distribution patterns when delivered in cells and tissues, which make them particularly fine candidates for the basis of innovative therapies. Currently, major available AuNP-based cancer therapeutic approaches are the photothermal therapy (PTT) or photodynamic therapy (PDT). PTT and PDT rely upon irradiation of surface plasmon resonant AuNPs (previously delivered in cancer cells) by light, in particular, in the near-infrared range. Under irradiation, AuNPs surface electrons are excited and resonate intensely, and fast conversion of light into heat takes place in about 1 ps. The cancer cells are destroyed by the induced hyperthermia, i.e. the condition under which cells are subject to temperature in the range of 41 °C–47 °C for tens of minutes. The review is focused on the description of the optical and thermal properties of AuNPs that underlie their continuous and progressive exploitation for diagnosis and cancer therapy. Plasmonic metallic nanostructure with unique hot carrier-driven photocatalysis has recently emerged as a promising photocatalyst. Herein, we show that the plasmonic photocatalysis can be significantly promoted by supporting bimetallic Au@Ag nanoalloys (NAs) on graphene oxide (GO). The obtained Au3@Ag1/GO (molar ratio of Au to Ag∼3:1) with improved synergistic effects provides a remarkable higher visible-light (>400 nm) photocatalytic activity for a complete degradation (99.36%) of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) molecules within 70 min, while about 61.74% or 62.38% via monometallic Au/GO or Ag/GO. The optimum photocatalytic performance is attributed to the production of high yield hot carriers on NAs with enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance property and the pronounced photoinduced electron-transfer ability of modified GO support by overgrowth of NAs. Herein, Ag/In2S3/ZnO nanorods (NRs) composite photocatalysts were successfully prepared via simple methods. Significantly, hydroxyl radical active substances were found in the electron spin resonance tests of In2S3/ZnO NRs and Ag/In2S3/ZnO NRs, which indicates that the oxidation reaction that oxidizes water or hydroxide ions into hydroxyl radicals occurs on the valence band of ZnO NRs. It suggests that Z-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed. In the photocatalytic experiments of degrading 4-nitrophenol (PNP), the Ag/In2S3/ZnO NRs composite exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than ZnO NRs, In2S3, Ag/ZnO NRs and In2S3/ZnO NRs. The characteristic peak of PNP disappears completely in 50 min. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction between ZnO NRs and In2S3. In addition, local surface plasmon resonance of Ag and Schottky junction formed between Ag and In2S3 also promote the photocatalytic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of different gold nanoparticle (GNP) structures on plasmonic enhancement for DNA detection is investigated on a few-layer graphene (FLG) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. Two distinct structures of gold nano-urchins (GNu) and gold nanorods (GNr) were used to bind the uniquely designed single-stranded probe DNA (ssDNA) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex DNA. The two types of GNP-ssDNA mixture were adsorbed onto the FLG-coated SPR sensor through the π-π stacking force between the ssDNA and the graphene layer. In the presence of complementary single-stranded DNA, the hybridization process took place and gradually removed the probes from the graphene surface. From SPR sensor preparation, the annealing process of the Au layer of the SPR sensor effectively enhanced the FLG coverage leading to a higher load of the probe DNA onto the sensing interface. The FLG was shown to be effective in providing a larger surface area for biomolecular capture due to its roughness. Carried out in the DNA hybridization study with the SPR sensor, GNu, with its rough and spiky structures, significantly reinforced the overall DNA hybridization signal compared with GNr with smooth superficies, especially in capturing the probe DNA. The DNA hybridization detection assisted by GNu reached the femtomolar range limit of detection. An optical simulation validated the extreme plasmonic field enhancement at the tip of the GNu spicules. The overall integrated approach of the graphene-based SPR sensor and GNu-assisted DNA detection provided the proof-of-concept for the possibility of tuberculosis disease screening using a low-cost and portable system to be potentially applied in remote or third-world countries. Plasmonic gap-enhanced Raman tags (GERTs) are new emerging nanoprobes that, based on their unique surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) signal, can play a major role in complex imaging and detection of biological systems. GERTs are generated from a metal core nanostructure and layered with one or more metal nanosized layers, encasing a Raman active molecule. The advantages of GERTs are enhanced surface plasmon and electromagnetic resonance, as well as inherent protection of the Raman active molecule from environmental deterioration that could reduce their spectroscopic signatures over time. In this study, we used in vitro three-dimensional (3D) spheroid cultures to demonstrate these advantages. 3D spheroids mimic the in vivo tumor microenvironment better than 2D culture, with abundant extracellular matrix and hypoxia inducing variability of pH and enzymatic reactions. Here, we report the use of GERTs in large pancreatic 3D spheroids (>500 μm in apparent diameter) for complex penetration visualization. Our combined imaging technique of enhanced darkfield microscopy and SERS was able to identify the presence and distribution of the GERTs within the 3D spheroid structure. The distribution of GERTs 2 hours after the nanorods' incubation indicated accumulation, generally in the outermost layer of the spheroids but also, more randomly, in non-uniform patterns in deep layers of the 3D spheroids. These observations bring into question the mechanism of uptake and flow of the nanoparticles in function of their incubation time while demonstrating the promising potential of our approach. Additionally, the SERS signal was still detectable after 24 hours of incubation of GERTs with the 3D culture, indicating the stability of the Raman signal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
