Microscopic study of the nucleation and growth of atomic layer deposition (ALD) dielectrics onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is an essential while challenging task toward high-performance devices. Here, we capture the morphological evolution and growth behaviors of ALD-HfO 2 onto SiO 2 /Si-supported aligned CNT arrays (A-CNTs) under three ALD recipes via cross-sectional high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The HfO 2 in ALD I (200 °C) preferentially nucleates on the SiO 2 substrate in heterogeneous growth mode, resulting in films with considerable pinholes, while ALD II (90 °C) and III (90 °C and extra H 2 O presoak) exhibit homogeneous growth with nucleation on both SiO 2 and CNTs, yielding uniform films. Arrangement defects in A-CNTs exacerbate nonuniformity of HfO 2 and tube-tube separation plays deterministic roles affecting the HfO 2 -CNT interfacial morphology. Electrical measurements from A-CNTs metaloxide-semiconductor devices validate these findings. Our investigation contributes valuable insights for optimizing ALD processes for enhanced dielectric integration on A-CNTs in next-generation electronics.

Spatially separate anchoring redox cocatalysts on the photocatalyst to shunt the charge migration paths is an effective route to regulate the charge flow. Differently, we herein introduce an artificially synthesized Sun-planet-like spatially separated center-to-surround radiation photosensitizer-cocatalyst structure to regulate electron flow in a tandem manner. A single Au sphere acts as the Sun/photosensitizer in the center, and small Pt particles scatter around as the planets/cocatalyst, both of which are fixed inside the MOF crystal. Such a structure can not only simultaneously increase the light harvesting capacity and electron migration kinetics but also optimize the electron transfer pathway to minimize the electron migration distance, so that the hot electrons generated by Au can be quickly transferred to Pt through MOF before annihilation, leading to a significant photoactivity promotion.

Perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) are attractive emissive materials for developing compact lasers. However, manipulation of PNC laser directionality has been difficult, which limits their usage in photonic devices that require on-demand tunability. Here we demonstrate PNC metasurface lasers with engineered emission angles. We fabricated millimeter-scale CsPbBr 3 PNC metasurfaces using an all-solution-processing technique based on soft nanoimprinting lithography. By designing band-edge photonic modes at the high-symmetry X point of the reciprocal lattice, we achieved four linearly polarized lasing beams along a polar angle of ∼30° under optical pumping. The device architecture further allows tuning of the lasing emission angles to 0° and ∼50°, respectively, by adjusting the PNC thickness to shift other high-symmetry points (Γ and M) to the PNC emission wavelength range. Our laser design strategies offer prospects for applications in directional optical antennas and detectors, 3D laser projection displays, and multichannel visible light communication.

This work presents a new strategy to achieve the growth of copper sulfide nanoclusters with high nuclearity. Through a phosphine-assisted C-S reductive cleavage approach, an intrinsically chiral [Cu 4 ] cluster passes through a [S-Cu 9 ] cluster and transforms into a higher-nuclearity [S-Cu 36 ] cluster, which features a core-shell structure with a [Cu 4 ] 4+ core encapsulated by a chiral [Cu 20 S 12 ] shell. Interestingly, the spiral arrangement of the bidental ligands on the surface of the [S-Cu 36 ] cluster leads to the L- / R -enantiomeric configurations. Moreover, by utilization of [Na(THF) 6 ] + as a chiral adaptive counterion, [S-Cu 36 ] can be interlocked separately, thus enabling the isolation of homochiral clusters. Theoretical calculation suggests that the configuration transition between two enantiomeric [Na(THF) 6 ] + species is favorable at room temperature, thereby promoting the cocrystallization of resulting chiral products. This study introduces a novel perspective on the synthesis of chiral copper sulfide nanoclusters and presents an innovative approach to achieving the chiral separation of nanoclusters.

The intrinsic spin of the electron and its associated magnetic moment can provide insights into spintronics. However, the interaction is extremely weak, as is the case with the coupling between an electron's spin and a magnetic field, and it poses significant experimental challenges. Here we demonstrate the direct measurement of polarized single NV - centers and their spin-spin coupling behaviors in diamond. By using photoinduced magnetic force microscopy, we obtain the extremely weak magnetic force coupling originating from the electron spin. The polarized spin state of NV - centers, transitioning from |0⟩ to |±1⟩, and their corresponding Zeeman effect can be characterized through their interaction with a magnetic tip. The result presents an advancement in achieving electron spin measurements by magnetic force, avoiding the need for manufacturing conductive substrates. This facilitates a better understanding and control of electron spin to novel electronic states for future quantum technologies.

Negative differential resistance (NDR) devices with a low peak-to-valley voltage difference (Δ V ) exhibit a high cut off frequency and low power consumption efficiency, which is significant for fabricating high-performance oscillators. However, achieving an ultralow Δ V is challenging. In this work, we report the first construction of an NDR device utilizing a van der Waals heterostructure composed of semimetallic Td-WTe 2 and semiconducting 2H-MoS 2 . Our findings reveal that the narrow energy region of the decreasing density of states (DOS) above the Fermi level of WTe 2 acts as a narrow band gap, facilitating type-III band alignment with MoS 2 and enabling band-to-band tunneling-based NDR transport. Notably, the NDR device exhibits an ultralow Δ V of approximately 0.01 V, which is at least an order of magnitude lower than previously reported values. This work not only introduces a new approach for NDR device fabrication but also provides new insights into the pivotal role of Td-WTe 2 in NDR transport.

Intrinsic superconductivity is rarely discovered in sp 2 -hybridized monolayer carbon allotropes. Here we design a carbon monolayer configured of pentagon, heptagon, and hexagon rings with p 2 plane group symmetry. Full- sp 2 hybridization is proposed to favor thermal metastability on a low Gibbs free energy. The extremely small thermal expansion coefficient is predicted to the turn negative value to positive with elevating temperature. Carbon polygon structures remain intact at a high thermal temperature of 3,000 K. The high specific surface area is found to approach 2,700 m 2 /g, with O 2 -adsorption being advantageous over pristine graphene. We reveal electronic Fermi surfaces mediated by phonon modes of carbon out-of-plane vibrations. By calculating the Eliashberg equation, we evaluate intrinsic superconductivity with a large electron-phonon coupling coefficient. The superconducting transition temperature is estimated to reach 20 K under a high logarithmic average frequency. These first-principles calculations shall stimulate experimentalists' interest in exploring low-dimensional carbon superconductors with gas sensitivity.

Surface plasmon polaritons from plasmonic nanocavity have aroused great interest due to their applications in various fields, in which on-demand design is hindered by the lack of theoretical frameworks. Herein, based on its wave nature, we developed a wavefunction theory to explicitly describe individual surface plasmon polaritons and the resultant near-field and far-field behaviors, which serves as an efficient platform for high-throughput on-demand design of nanocavities. We found an applicative wavefunction form and proposed a two-body interaction function and a "shell" model for many-body interactions in surface plasmon polaritons' coupling. The wavefunction of individual surface plasmon polaritons and resultant near-field and far-field behaviors can be given explicitly and precisely. The theory provides a fundamental and quantitative understanding of surface plasmon polaritons and enables highly efficient on-demand design of plasmonic metamaterials and devices, leading to further methodological applications in numerous aspects.

Hydrogels have shown promise as quasi-solid-state electrolytes for flexible supercapacitors but face challenges such as poor self-repair, unstable electrode adhesion, limited temperature range, and flammability. Herein, an all-round green hydrogel electrolyte (silk nanofibers (SNFs)/peach gum polysaccharide (PGP)/borax/glycerol (SPBG)-ZnSO 4 ) addresses these issues through dynamic cross-linking of peach gum polysaccharide and silk nanofibers with borax, integrating varieties of key property including high water retention, broad temperature tolerance (-20 to 90 °C), excellent self-adhesion (60.7 kPa for carbon cloth electrodes), satisfactory flame retardancy (limited oxygen index of 51%), low-temperature self-healing (-20 °C), and good ionic conductivity (7.68 mS cm -1 ). The resulting supercapacitor exhibits excellent cycling stability with 98.2% capacitance retention after 40,000 long cycles at 25 °C. The specific capacitance retention remains above 90% even after 15,000 cycles at high/low temperatures (50 °C/-20 °C). Furthermore, the flexible supercapacitor demonstrates stable performance under mechanical stimuli (180° bending and perforation), highlighting the potential of biomass hydrogels in flexible energy storage devices.

The 2D magnet Fe 3 GaTe 2 has received considerable attention for its high Curie temperature ( T C ), robust intrinsic ferromagnetism, and significant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). In this study, the dynamic magnetic properties of Fe 3 GaTe 2 are systematically investigated using an all-optical pump-probe technique. We find that the spin precession frequency ( f ) is as high as 351.2 GHz at T = 10 K under a field of H = 70 kOe. However, it decreases to 242.8 GHz at 300 K, mainly due to the reduced effective PMA field ( H keff ). The Gilbert damping factor (α) is modest, which increases from 0.039 (10 K) to 0.075 (300 K) owing to the enhanced scattering rate. Interestingly, when Fe 3 GaTe 2 is coupled with 2 nm of Co, the H keff , f , and α just decrease slightly, highlighting the dominant influence of Fe 3 GaTe 2 . These findings substantially deepen our understanding of Fe 3 GaTe 2 , promoting the development of spintronic devices based on advanced 2D magnetic materials.

Precise monitoring of biomolecular radiation damage is crucial for understanding X-ray-induced cell injury and improving the accuracy of clinical radiotherapy. We present the design and performance of lanthanide-DNA-origami nanodosimeters for directly visualizing radiation damage at the single-particle level. Lanthanide ions (Tb 3+ or Eu 3+ ) coordinated with DNA origami nanosensors enhance the sensitivity of X-ray irradiation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed morphological changes in Eu 3+ -sensitized DNA origami upon X-ray irradiation, indicating damage caused by ionization-generated electrons and free radicals. We further demonstrated the practical applicability of Eu 3+ -DNA-origami integrated chips in precisely monitoring radiation-mediated cancer radiotherapy. Quantitative results showed consistent trends with flow cytometry and histological examination under comparable X-ray irradiation doses, providing an affordable and user-friendly visualization tool for preclinical applications. These findings provide new insights into the impact of heavy metals on radiation-induced biomolecular damage and pave the way for future research in developing nanoscale radiation sensors for precise clinical radiography.

Fluorescent dye films on transparent substrates are essential for OLEDs, flexible displays, X-ray detection, and wireless optical communications. However, their efficiency is often hampered by fluorescence trapping due to total internal reflection (TIR) and waveguiding. This study tackles this longstanding challenge by reconceptualizing the integration of dye films with nanoantenna metasurfaces. Traditional methods involve directly spin-coating films onto c-Si metasurfaces on quartz substrates, resulting in edge luminescence and weak inner signals. We present a straightforward, adjustable approach by integrating dye films on the opposite side of quartz substrates, reaching a 2.5-fold photoluminescence enhancement and improving the uniformity of the emission compared to the conventional methods. These gains stem from redirecting a significant portion of leaked fluorescence light trapped inside the substrate into free space, surpassing TIR conditions through in-plane diffraction orders of the metasurfaces across the full RGB spectrum. Our findings facilitate the design of more efficient luminescent devices.

Miniaturized hyperspectral imaging based on filter arrays has attracted much attention in consumer applications, such as food safety and biomedical applications. In this Letter, we demonstrate a miniaturized hyperspectral imager using a reconfigurable filter array to tackle the existing trade-off issue between the spectral and spatial resolutions. Utilizing tens of intermediate states of a vanadium dioxide cavity, we increase the total number of physical spectral channels by tens of times from a 2 × 2 mosaic filter unit, providing both high spatial and spectral resolutions for spectral imaging. The reconfigurable filter has a good spectral resolvability of 10 nm in the visible range with a wavelength inaccuracy of less than 2.1 nm. Hyperspectral imaging is demonstrated with a frame rate of 4.5 Hz.

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) are ideal materials to boost neuromorphic computing toward the ultrahigh speed and ultracompact integration regime. However, developing a suitable AFM neuromorphic memory remains an aspirational but challenging goal. In this work, we construct such a memory based on the CoO/Pt heterostructure, in which the collinear insulating AFM CoO shows a strong perpendicular anisotropy facilitating its electrical readout and writing. Utilizing the unique nonlinear response and bipolar fading memory properties of the device, we demonstrate a multidimensional reservoir computing beyond the traditional binary paradigm. These results are expected to pave the way toward next-generation fast and massive neuromorphic computing.

Single-atom Rh 1 alloyed Co (Rh 1 Co) is explored as an efficient catalyst for urea electrosynthesis via coelectrolysis of CO 2 and NO 3 - (UECN). Theoretical calculations and in situ spectroscopic measurements unravel the synergetic effect of Co and Rh 1 in promoting the UECN process, where the Rh 1 site activates NO 3 - to form *NH 2 , while the Co site activates CO 2 to form *CO. The formed *CO then desorbs from the Co site and transfers to the Rh 1 site, followed by continuous C-N coupling with *NH 2 formed on the Rh 1 site to synthesize urea. Remarkably, Rh 1 Co assembled in a flow cell delivers the exceptional urea yield rate of 24.9 mmol h -1 g -1 and Faradaic efficiency of 51.1%, outperforming most previously reported UECN catalysts.

Low-dimensional semiconductor-based field-effect transistor (FET) biosensors are promising for label-free detection of biotargets while facing challenges in mass fabrication of devices and reliable reading of small signals. Here, we construct a reliable technology for mass production of semiconducting carbon nanotube (CNT) film and FET biosensors. High-uniformity randomly oriented CNT films were prepared through an improved immersion coating technique, and then, CNT FETs were fabricated with coefficient of performance variations within 6% on 4-in. wafers (within 9% interwafer) based on an industrial standard-level process. The CNT FET-based ion sensors demonstrated threshold voltage standard deviations within 5.1 mV at each ion concentration, enabling direct reading of the concentration information based on the drain current. By integrating bioprobes, we achieved detection of biosignals as low as 100 aM through a plug-and-play portable detection system. The reliable technology will contribute to commercial applications of CNT FET biosensors, especially in point-of-care tests.

The ability to freeze and stabilize reaction intermediates in their metastable states and obtain their structural and chemical information with high spatial resolution is critical to advance materials technologies such as catalysis and batteries. Here, we develop an electrified operando -freezing methodology to preserve these metastable states under electrochemical reaction conditions for cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) imaging and spectroscopy. Using Cu catalysts for CO 2 reduction as a model system, we observe restructuring of the Cu catalyst in a CO 2 atmosphere while the same catalyst remains intact in air at the nanometer scale. Furthermore, we discover the existence of a single valence Cu (1+) state and C-O bonding at the electrified liquid-solid interface of the operando -frozen samples, which are key reaction intermediates that traditional ex situ measurements fail to detect. This work highlights our novel technique to study the local structure and chemistry of electrified liquid-solid interfaces, with broad impact beyond catalysis.

Enhancing field emission in ultrascaled electronics improves the device performance and energy efficiency. Conventional lithography defines electrodes with a few-nanometer spacing on the cost of strengthened electron scattering and the reduced field enhancement factor, thus presenting challenges to enhance field emission at a small bias. Here, we used self-assembled nanorods with sub-5 nm spacing as electrodes to overcome these challenges. Intrinsic ballistic transport through high-crystallinity solution-synthesized nanorods minimized charge scattering; meanwhile ultrascaled anisotropic morphologies concentrated local electric fields and thereby lowered the barrier height. Enabled by these structural features, we demonstrated field emission density up to 4.1 × 10 4 A cm -2 at 1 V in air, more than 10-fold higher than typical molecular and vacuum electronics at similar conditions, and constructed an air-operating electron source with an on/off ratio of 10 5 at the collector electrode. Energy-efficient high-conductance electron emission suggested the potential of using solution-synthesized nanomaterials in ultrascaled electronics.

We proposed two physical concepts, i.e., an intramolecular relative cross section (RCS) and an intermolecular relative scattering ability (RSA), to re-understand and re-describe surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and established a general SERS quantification theory. Interestingly, RCS and RSA are intrinsic factors and are experimentally measurable to form datasheets of molecules, namely, SERS cards, with which a standard SERS quantification procedure was established. The validity of the theory and quantification procedure was confirmed by experiments. Surprisingly, RCS and RSA are also valid for complex systems being considered as virtual molecules and are experimentally measurable. This simplifies complex systems into analyte-virtual molecule binary systems. With this consideration, trace-level mitoxantrone (a typical cancer drug metabolite) in artificial urine was accurately predicted. The theory, the SERS cards, the standard quantification procedure, and the virtual molecule concept pave a way toward quantitative and standardized SERS spectroscopy in dealing with real-world problems and complex samples.

An interesting question is whether chalcogen atoms can emulate the role of carbon or boron elements stabilized between two transition metal layers, as observed in MXenes or MBenes. Here, we predict a new family of two-dimensional ternary compounds M 4 XY 2 (where M = Pd, Y, Zr, etc.; X = S, Se, Te; and Y = Cl, Br, I), named M-chalcogene. Through first-principles calculations, we reveal diverse physical properties in these compounds, including superconducting, topological, and magnetic characteristics, where the bilayer transition metals play crucial roles. Moreover, the expected helical edge states and superconducting transition temperatures in Pd 4 SCl 2 can be finely tuned by strains. Additionally, the Ti 4 SCl 2 is predicted to be a topological insulator and shows promise as a gas sensor candidate for certain exotic gases. Our findings expand two-dimensional material families and provide promising platforms for diverse physical phenomena with efficient tunability by external stimuli for various applications.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is an emerging therapeutic modality triggered by endogenous substances in the tumor microenvironment (TME) to generate reactive oxygen species. However, the mild acid pH, low H 2 O 2 concentration, and overexpressed glutathione can suppress the CDT efficiency. Herein, ultrasound (US)-triggered Cu 2+ -based single-atom nanoenzymes (FA-NH 2 -UiO-66-Cu, FNUC) are constructed with the performance of target and glutathione depletion. In the TME, the single-atom Cu sites of FNUC consume glutathione and the FNUC:Cu + generates •OH via peroxidase-like activity. The US-activated FNUC exhibits a fast •OH generation rate, a low Michaelis constant, and a large •OH concentration, indicating the cavitation effect of US promotes the •OH generation. Meanwhile, the tumor target of FNUC is confirmed by NIR-II fluorescence imaging, in which it is modified with IR-1061. Combined with the antitumor performance of FNUC in vitro and in vivo , the novel Cu-based SAzymes can achieve efficient and precise cancer treatment.

Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy has been extensively utilized for detecting and distinguishing the chirality of diverse substances and structures. However, CD spectroscopy is inherently weak and conventionally associated with chiral sensing, thus constraining its range of applications. Here, we report a DNA-origami-empowered metasurface sensing platform through the collaborative effect of metasurfaces and DNA origami, enabling achiral/slightly chiral sensing with high sensitivity via the enhanced ΔCD. An anapole metasurface, boasting over 60 times the average optical chirality enhancement, was elaborately designed to synergize with reconfigurable DNA origami. We experimentally demonstrated the detection of achiral/slightly chiral DNA linker strands via the enhanced ΔCD of the proposed platform, whose sensitivity was a 10-fold enhancement compared with the platform without metasurfaces. Our work presents a high-sensitivity platform for achiral/slightly chiral sensing through chiral spectroscopy, expanding the capabilities of chiral spectroscopy and inspiring the integration of multifunctional artificial nanostructures across diverse domains.

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) are a promising energy storage technology, but challenges persist including electrolyte thickness and lithium (Li) dendrite puncture. A novel three-dimensional "peapod-like" composite solid electrolyte (CSEs) with low thickness (26.8 μm), high mechanical strength, and dendrite inhibition was designed. Incorporating Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) enhances both mechanical strength and ionic conductivity, stabilizing the CSE/Li interface and enabling Li symmetric batteries to stabilize for 3000 h. With structural advantages, the assembled LFP||Li and NCM811||Li cells exhibit excellent cycling performance. In addition, the constructed NCM811 pouch cell achieves a high gravimetric/volumetric energy density of 307.0 Wh kg -1 /677.7 Wh L -1 , which can light up LEDs under extreme conditions, demonstrating practicality and high safety. This work offers a generalized strategy for CSE design and insights into high-performance SSLMBs.

Currently, the construction of anti-ambipolar transistors (AATs) is primarily based on asymmetric heterostructures, which are challenging to fabricate. AATs used for photodetection are accompanied by dark currents that prove difficult to suppress, resulting in reduced sensitivity. This work presents light-triggered AATs based on an in-plane lateral WSe 2 homojunction without van der Waals heterostructures. In this device, the WSe 2 channel is partially electrically controlled by the back gate due to the screening effect of the bottom electrode, resulting in a homojunction that is dynamically modulated with gate voltage, exhibiting electrostatically reconfigurable and light-triggered anti-ambipolar behaviors. It exhibits high responsivity (188 A/W) and detectivity (8.94 × 10 14 Jones) under 635 nm illumination with a low power density of 0.23 μW/cm 2 , promising a new approach to low-power, high-performance photodetectors. Moreover, the device demonstrates efficient self-driven photodetection. Furthermore, ternary inverters are realized using monolithic WSe 2 , simplifying the manufacturing of multivalued logic devices.

Stabilization of multiple polarization states at the atomic scale is pivotal for realizing high-density memory devices beyond prevailing bistable ferroelectric architectures. Here, we show that two-dimensional ferroelectric SnS or GeSe is able to revive and stabilize the ferroelectric order of three-dimensional ferroelectric BaTiO 3 , even when the latter is thinned to one unit cell in thickness. The underlying mechanism for overcoming the conventional detrimental critical thickness effect is attributed to facile interfacial inversion symmetry breaking by robust in-plane polarization of SnS or GeSe. Furthermore, when invoking interlayer sliding, we can stabilize multiple polarization states and achieve efficient interstate switching in the heterostructures, accompanied by dynamical ferroelectric skyrmionic excitations. When invoking sliding and twisting, the moiré domains exhibit nontrivial polar vortexes, which can be laterally displaced via different sliding schemes. These findings provide an intuitive avenue for simultaneously overcoming the standing critical thickness issue in bulk ferroelectrics and weak polarization issue in sliding ferroelectricity.

Kagome materials have recently garnered substantial attention due to the intrinsic flat band feature and the stimulated magnetic and spin-related many-body physics. In contrast to their bulk counterparts, two-dimensional (2D) kagome materials feature more distinct kagome bands, beneficial for exploring novel quantum phenomena. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of an ultrathin kagome-structured Co-telluride (Co 9 Te 16 ) via a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) route and clarify its formation mechanism from the Co-intercalation in the 1T-CoTe 2 layers. More significantly, we unveil the flat band states in the ultrathin Co 9 Te 16 and identify the real-space localization of the flat band states by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) combined with first-principles calculations. A ferrimagnetic order is also predicted in kagome-Co 9 Te 16 . This work should provide a novel route for the direct synthesis of ultrathin kagome materials via a metal self-intercalation route, which should shed light on the exploration of the intriguing flat band physics in the related systems.

Mixed-dimensional heterostructures integrate materials of diverse dimensions with unique electronic functionalities, providing a new platform for research in electron transport and optoelectronic detection. Here, we report a novel covalently bonded one-dimensional/two-dimensional (1D/2D) homojunction structure with robust junction contacts, which exhibits wide-spectrum (from the visible to near-infrared regions), self-driven photodetection, and polarization-sensitive photodetection capabilities. Benefiting from the ultralow dark current at zero bias voltage, the on/off ratio and detectivity of the device reach 1.5 × 10 3 and 3.24 × 10 9 Jones, respectively. Furthermore, the pronounced anisotropy of the WSe 2 1D/2D homojunction is attributed to its low symmetry, enabling polarization-sensitive detection. In the absence of any external bias voltage, the device exhibits strong linear dichroism for wavelengths of 638 and 808 nm, with anisotropy ratios of 2.06 and 1.96, respectively. These results indicate that such mixed-dimensional structures can serve as attractive building blocks for novel optoelectronic detectors.

Moiré superlattices, constituted by two-dimensional materials, demonstrate a variety of strongly correlated and topological phenomena including correlated insulators, superconductivity, and integer/fractional Chern insulators. In the realm of topological nontrivial Chern insulators within specific moiré superlattices, previous studies usually observe a single Chern number at a given filling factor in a device. Here we present the observation of gate-tunable Chern numbers within the Chern insulator state of an ABC-stacked trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattice device. Near quarter filling, the moiré superlattice exhibits spontaneous valley polarization and distinct ferromagnetism associated with the Chern insulator states over a range of the displacement field. Surprisingly we find a transition of the Chern number from C = 3 to 4 as the displacement field is increased. Our observation of gate-tunable correlated Chern insulators suggests new ways to control and manipulate topological states in a moiré superlattice device.

Cancer immunotherapies based on cytotoxic CD8 + T lymphocytes (CTLs) are highly promising for cancer treatment. The specific interaction between T-cell receptors and peptide-MHC-I complexes (pMHC-I) on cancer cell membranes critically determines their therapeutic outcomes. However, the lack of appropriate endogenous antigens for MHC-I presentation disables tumor recognition by CTLs. By devising three antigen-loaded self-assembling peptides of pY-K(Ag)-ERGD, pY-K(Ag)-E, and Y-K(Ag)-ERGD to noncovalently generate light-activatable supramolecular antigens at tumor sites in different manners, we report pY-K(Ag)-ERGD as a promising candidate to endow tumor cells with pMHC-I targets on demand. Specifically, pY-K(Ag)-ERGD first generates low-antigenic supramolecular antigens on cancer cell membranes, and a successive light pulse allows antigen payloads to efficiently release from the supramolecular scaffold, directly producing antigenic pMHC-I. Intravenous administration of pY-K(Ag)-ERGD enables light-controlled tumor inhibition when combined with adoptively transferred antigen-specific CTLs. Our strategy is feasible for broadening tumor antigen repertoires for T-cell immunotherapies and advancing precision-controlled T-cell immunotherapies.

Anisotropic two-dimensional materials present a diverse range of physical characteristics, making them well-suited for applications in photonics and optoelectronics. While mechanical properties play a crucial role in determining the reliability and efficacy of 2D material-based devices, the fracture behavior of anisotropic 2D crystals remains relatively unexplored. Toward this end, we herein present the first measurement of the anisotropic fracture toughness of 2D Ta 2 NiSe 5 by microelectromechanical system-based tensile tests. Our findings reveal a significant in-plane anisotropic ratio (∼3.0), accounting for crystal orientation-dependent crack paths. As the thickness increases, we observe an intriguing intraplanar-to-interplanar transition of fracture along the a -axis, manifesting as stepwise crack features attributed to interlayer slippage. In contrast, ruptures along the c -axis surprisingly exhibit persistent straightness and smoothness regardless of thickness, owing to the robust interlayer shear resistance. Our work affords a promising avenue for the construction of future electronics based on nanoribbons with atomically sharp edges.

Although transition-metal nitrides have been widely applied for several decades, experimental investigations of their high-resolution electronic band structures are rare due to the lack of high-quality single-crystalline samples. Here, we report on the first momentum-resolved electronic band structures of titanium nitride (TiN) films, which are remarkable nitride superconductors. The measurements of the crystal structures and electrical transport properties confirmed the high quality of these films. More importantly, from a combination of high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, the extracted Coulomb interaction strength of TiN films can be as large as 8.5 eV, whereas resonant photoemission spectroscopy yields a value of 6.26 eV. These large values of Coulomb interaction strength indicate that superconducting TiN is a strongly correlated system. Our results uncover the unexpected electronic correlations in transition-metal nitrides, potentially providing a perspective not only to understand their emergent quantum states but also to develop their applications in quantum devices.

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (2D-vdWHs) based on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide unparalleled control over electronic properties. However, the interlayer coupling is challenged by the interfacial misalignment and defects, which hinders a comprehensive understanding of the intertwined electronic orders, especially superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW). Here, by using pressure to regulate the interlayer coupling of non-centrosymmetric 6 R -TaS 2 vdWHs, we observe an unprecedented phase diagram in TMDs. This phase diagram encompasses successive suppression of the original CDW states from alternating H -layer and T -layer configurations, the emergence and disappearance of a new CDW-like state, and a double superconducting dome induced by different interlayer coupling effects. These results not only illuminate the crucial role of interlayer coupling in shaping the complex phase diagram of TMD systems but also pave a new avenue for the creation of a novel family of bulk heterostructures with customized 2D properties.

Valleytronics, i.e., the manipulation of the valley degree of freedom, offers a promising path for energy-efficient electronics. One of the key milestones in this field is the room-temperature manipulation of the valley information in thick-layered material. Using scanning photocurrent microscopy, we achieve this milestone by observing a geometrically dependent circular photocurrent in a few-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) under normal incidence. Such an observation shows that the system symmetry is lower than that of bulk MoS 2 material, preserving the optical chirality-valley correspondence. Moreover, the circular photocurrent polarity can be reversed by applying electrical bias. We propose a model where the observed photocurrent results from the symmetry breaking and the built-in field at the electrode-sample interface. Our results show that the valley information is still retained even in thick-layered MoS 2 at room temperature and opens up new opportunities for exploiting the valley index through interface engineering in multilayer valleytronics devices.

Advanced microelectronics in the future may require semiconducting channel materials beyond silicon. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, with their atomically thin thickness, hold great promise for future electronic devices. One challenge to achieving high-performance 2D semiconductor field effect transistors (FET) is the high contact resistance at the metal-semiconductor interface. In this study, we develop a charge-transfer doping strategy with WSe 2 /α-RuCl 3 heterostructures to achieve low-resistance ohmic contact for p-type monolayer WSe 2 transistors. We show that hole doping as high as 3 × 10 13 cm -2 can be achieved in the WSe 2 /α-RuCl 3 heterostructure due to its type-III band alignment, resulting in an ohmic contact with resistance of 4 kΩ μm. Based on that, we demonstrate p-type WSe 2 transistors with an on-current of 35 μA·μm -1 and an I ON /I OFF ratio exceeding 10 9 at room temperature.

As tactile force sensing has become increasingly significant in the field of machine haptics, achieving multidimensional force sensing remains a challenge. We propose a 3D flexible force sensor that consists of an axisymmetric hemispherical protrusion and four equally sized quarter-circle electrodes. By simulating the device using a force and electrical field model, it has been found that the magnitude and direction of the force can be expressed through the voltage relationship of the four electrodes when the magnitude of the shear force remains constant and its direction varies within 0-360°. The experimental results show that a resolution of 15° can be achieved in the range 0-90°. Additionally, we installed the sensor on a robotic hand, enabling it to perceive the magnitude and direction of touch and grasp actions. Based on this, the designed 3D flexible tactile force sensor provides valuable insights for multidimensional force detection and applications.

Ghost phonon polaritons (g-PhPs), a unique class of phonon polaritons in the infrared, feature ultralong diffractionless propagation (>20 μm) across the surface and tilted wavefronts in the bulk. Here, we study hybrid g-PhPs in a heterostructure of calcite and an ultrathin film of the phase change material (PCM) In 3 SbTe 2 , where the optical field is bound in the PCM film with enhanced confinement compared with conventional g-PhPs. Near-field optical images for hybrid g-PhPs reveal a lemniscate pattern in the momentum distribution. We fabricated In 3 SbTe 2 gratings and investigated how different orientations and periodicities of gratings impact the propagation of hybrid g-PhPs. As the grating period decreases to zero, the wavefront of hybrid g-PhPs can be dynamically steered by varying the grating orientation. Our results highlight the promise of hybrid g-PhPs with tunable functionalities for nanophotonic studies.

The intricate protonation process in carbon dioxide reduction usually makes the product unpredictable. Thus, it is significant to control the reactive intermediates to manipulate the reaction steps. Here, we propose that the synergistic La-Ti active sites in the N-La 2 Ti 2 O 7 nanosheets enable the highly selective carbon dioxide photoreduction into methane. In the photoreduction of CO 2 over N-La 2 Ti 2 O 7 nanosheets, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra are utilized to monitor the *CH 3 O intermediate, pivotal for methane production, whereas such monitoring is not conducted for La 2 Ti 2 O 7 nanosheets. Also, theoretical calculations testify to the increased charge densities on the Ti and La atoms and the regulated formation energy barrier of *CO and *CH 3 O intermediates by the constructed synergistic active sites. Accordingly, the methane formation rate of 7.97 μL h -1 exhibited by the N-La 2 Ti 2 O 7 nanosheets, along with an electron selectivity of 96.6%, exceeds that of most previously reported catalysts under similar conditions.

Current density imaging is helpful for discovering interesting electronic phenomena and understanding carrier dynamics, and by combining pressure distributions, several pressure-induced novel physics may be comprehended. In this work, noninvasive, high-resolution two-dimensional images of the current density and pressure gradient for graphene ribbon and h BN-graphene- h BN devices are explored using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond under high pressure. The two-dimensional vector current density is reconstructed by the vector magnetic field mapped by the near-surface NV center layer in the diamond. The current density images accurately and clearly reproduce the complicated structure and current flow of graphene under high pressure. Additionally, the spatial distribution of the pressure is simultaneously mapped, rationalizing the nonuniformity of the current density under high pressure. The current method opens a significant new avenue to investigate electronic transport and conductance variations in two-dimensional materials and electrical devices under high pressure as well as for nondestructive evaluation of semiconductor circuits.

Anodic dendrite formation is a critical issue in rechargeable batteries and often leads to poor cycling stability and quick capacity loss. Prevailing strategies for dendrite suppression aim at slowing down the growth rate kinetically but still leaving possibilities for dendrite evolution over time. Herein, we report a complete dendrite elimination strategy using a mesoporous ferroelectric polymer membrane as the battery separator. The dendrite suppression is realized by spontaneously reversing the surface energetics for metal ion reduction at the protrusion front, where a positive piezoelectric polarization is generated and superimposed as the protrusion compresses the separator. This effect is demonstrated first in a Zn electroplating process, and further in Zn-Zn symmetric cells and Zn-NaV 3 O 8 ·1.5H 2 O full cells, where the dendritic Zn anode surfaces are completely turned into featureless flat surfaces. Consequently, a substantially longer charging/discharging cycle is achieved. This study provides a promising pathway toward high-performance dendrite-free rechargeable batteries.

The reduced dimensionality and interfacial effects in magnetic nanostructures open the feasibility to tailor magnetic ordering. Here, we report the synthesis of ultrathin metallic Co 2 Si nanoplates with a total thickness that is tunable to 2.2 nm. The interfacial magnetism coupled with the highly anisotropic nanoplate geometry leads to strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and robust hard ferromagnetism at room temperature, with a Curie temperature ( T C ) exceeding 950 K and a coercive field ( H C ) > 4.0 T at 3 K and 8750 Oe at 300 K. Theoretical calculations suggest that ferromagnetism originates from symmetry breaking and undercoordinated Co atoms at the Co 2 Si and SiO 2 interface. With protection by the self-limiting intrinsic oxide, the interfacial ferromagnetism of the Co 2 Si nanoplates exhibits excellent environmental stability. The controllable growth of ambient stable Co 2 Si nanoplates as 2D hard ferromagnets could open exciting opportunities for fundamental studies and applications in Si-based spintronic devices.

Variegation and complexity of polarization relaxation loss in many heterostructured materials provide available mechanisms to seek a strong electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance. Here we construct a unique heterostructured compound that bonds α-Fe 2 O 3 nanosheets of the (110) plane on carbon microtubes (CMTs). Through effective alignment between the Fermi energy level of CMTs and the conduction band position of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanosheets at the interface, we attain substantial polarization relaxation loss via novel atomic valence reversal between Fe(III) ↔ Fe(III - ) induced with periodic electron injection from conductive CMTs under EMW irradiation to give α-Fe 2 O 3 nanosheets. Such heterostructured materials possess currently reported minimum reflection loss of -84.01 dB centered at 10.99 GHz at a thickness of 3.19 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (reflection loss ≤ -10 dB) of 7.17 GHz (10.83-18 GHz) at 2.65 mm. This work provides an effective strategy for designing strong EMW absorbers by combining highly efficient electron injection and atomic valence reversal.

The deterministic generation of individual color centers with defined orientations or types in solid-state systems is paramount for advancements in quantum technologies. Silicon vacancies in 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC) can be formed in V1 and V2 types. However, silicon vacancies are typically generated randomly between V1 and V2 types with similar probabilities. Here, we show that the preferred V2 centers can be selectively generated by focused ion beam (FIB) implantation on the m -plane in 4H-SiC. When implantation is on the m -plane ( a -plane), the generation probability ratio between V1 and V2 centers increase exponentially (remains constant) with decreasing FIB fluences. With a fluence of 10 ions/spot, the probability to generate V2 centers is seven times higher than V1 centers. Our results represent a critical step toward the deterministic creation of specific defect types.

The penetrating growth of Li into the inorganic solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is one key factor limiting its practical application. Research to understand the underlying mechanism of Li penetration has been ongoing for years and is continuing. Here, we report an in situ scanning electron microscopy methodology to investigate the dynamic behaviors of isolated Li filaments in the garnet SSE under practical cycling conditions. We find that the filaments tend to grow in the SSE, while surprisingly, those filaments can self-dissolve with a decrease in the current density without a reversal of the current direction. We further build a coupled electro-chemo-mechanical model to assess the interplay between electrochemistry and mechanics during the dynamic evolution of filaments. We reveal that filament growth is strongly regulated by the competition between the electrochemical driving force and mechanical resistive force. The numerical results provide rational guidance for the design of solid-state batteries with excellent properties.

Interlayer excitons, with prolonged lifetimes and tunability, hold potential for advanced optoelectronics. Previous research on the interlayer excitons has been dominated by two-dimensional heterostructures. Here, we construct WSe 2 /GaN composite heterostructures, in which the doping concentration of GaN and the twist angle of bilayer WSe 2 are employed as two ingredients for the manipulation of exciton behaviors and polarizations. The exciton energies in monolayer WSe 2 /GaN can be regulated continuously by the doping levels of the GaN substrate, and a remarkable increase in the valley polarizations is achieved. Especially in a heterostructure with 4°-twisted bilayer WSe 2 , a maximum polarization of 38.9% with a long lifetime is achieved for the interlayer exciton. Theoretical calculations reveal that the large polarization and long lifetime are attributed to the high exciton binding energy and large spin flipping energy during depolarization in bilayer WSe 2 /GaN. This work introduces a distinctive member of the interlayer exciton with a high degree of polarization and a long lifetime.

α-PD-L1 therapy has shown encouraging results at harnessing the immune system to combat cancer. However, the treatment effect is relatively low due to the dense extracellular matrix (ECM) and tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment (TIME). Therefore, an ultrasound (US)-responsive nanosensitizer (URNS) is engineered to deliver losartan (LST) and polyethylenimine (PEI) to remolde the TME, driving "cold"-"hot" tumor transformation and enhancing the sensitivity of α-PD-L1 therapy. In the tumor site, noninvasive US can make MTNP generate ROS, which cleave ROS-sensitive bonds to dissociate MTNP tK @LST-PEI, shedding PEI and releasing LST from mesoporous spheres. The results demonstrated that URNS combined with α-PD-L1 therapy effectively inhibited tumor growth with an inhibition rate as high as 90%, which was 1.7-fold higher than that of the α-PD-L1 treatment in vivo . In summary, the URNS improves the sensitivity of α-PD-L1 therapy by remodeling the TME, which provides promising insights for optimizing cancer immunotherapy.

The metasurface analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) provides a chip-scale platform for achieving light delay and storage, high Q factors, and greatly enhanced optical fields. However, the literature relies on the coupling between localized and localized or localized and collective resonances, limiting the Q factor and related performance. Here, we report a novel approach for realizing collective EIT-like bands with a measured Q factor reaching 2750 in silicon metasurfaces in the near-infrared regime, exceeding the state of the art by more than 5 times. It employs the coupling between two collective resonances, the Mie electric dipole surface lattice resonance (SLR) and the out-of-plane/in-plane electric quadrupole SLR (EQ-SLR). Remarkably, the collective EIT-like resonance can have diverging Q factor and group delay due to the bound state in the continuum characteristics of the in-plane EQ-SLR. With these findings, our study opens a new route for tailoring light flow in metasurfaces.

Charge and spin are two intrinsic attributes of carriers governing almost all of the physical processes and operation principles in materials. Here, we demonstrate the manipulation of electronic and spin states in designed Co-quantum dot/WS 2 (Co-QDs/WS 2 ) heterostructures by employing a metal-dielectric composite substrate and via scanning tunneling microscope. By repeatedly scanning under a unipolar bias, switching the bias polarity, or applying a pulse through nonmagnetic or magnetic tips, the Co-QDs morphologies exhibit a regular and reproducible transformation between bright and dark dots. First-principles calculations reveal that these tunable characters are attributed to the variation of density of states and the transition of magnetic anisotropy energy induced by carrier accumulation. It also suggests that the metal-dielectric composite substrate is successful in creating the interfacial potential for carrier accumulation and realizes the electrically controllable modulations. These results will promote the exploration of electron-matter interactions in quantum systems and provide an innovative way to facilitate the development of spintronics.

In recent years, live-cell-based drug delivery systems have gained considerable attention. However, shear stress, which accompanies blood flow, may cause cell death and weaken the delivery performance. In this study, we found that reducing cholesterol in macrophage plasma membranes enhanced their tumor targeting ability by more than 2-fold. Our study demonstrates that the reduced cholesterol level deactivated the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and consequently promoted the nuclear translocation of transcription factor EB (TFEB), which in turn enhanced the expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD) to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by shear stress. A proof-of-concept system using low cholesterol macrophages attached to MXene (e.g., l-RX) was fabricated. In a melanoma mouse model, l-RX and laser irradiation treatments eliminated tumors with no recurrences observed in mice. Therefore, cholesterol reduction is a simple and effective way to enhance the targeting performance of macrophage-based drug delivery systems.

The emergence of one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (1D vdWHs) opens up potential fields with unique properties, but precise synthesis remains a challenge. The utilization of mixed conductive types of carbon nanotubes as templates has imposed restrictions on the investigation of the electrical behavior and interlayer interaction of 1D vdWHs. In this study, we efficiently encapsulated silver iodide in high-purity semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (sSWCNTs), forming 1D AgI@sSWCNT vdWHs. We characterized the semiconductor-metal transition and increased the carrier concentration of individual AgI@sSWCNTs via sensitive dielectric force microscopy and confirmed the results through electrical device tests. The electrical behavior transition was attributed to an interlayer charge transfer, as demonstrated by Kelvin probe force microscopy. Furthermore, we showed that this method of synthesizing 1D heterostructures can be extended to other metal halides. This work opens the door for the further exploration of the electrical properties of 1D vdWHs.
