Calculations show that structurally chiral, three‐dimensionally periodic, microfibrous thin films (μFTFs) of Parylene‐C can function as both polarization‐insensitive and circular‐polarization‐selective photonic crystals in the long‐wavelength infrared regime. Careful engineering is required for bandstop filters in order to avoid the numerous absorption peaks of bulk Parylene‐C. ABSTRACT Chiral sculptured thin films of zinc selenide with different helical periods were deposited on both sides of a glass slide using the serial bideposition technique in order to fabricate a dual-band circular-polarization filter polarizer that exhibits two distinct circular Bragg regimes for a wide range (about 45°) of the angle of incidence. The solution of a boundary-value problem formulated for a modified Kretschmann configuration shows that the phase speed of a surface-plasmon wave guided by the planar interface of a sufficiently thin metal film and a chiral sculptured thin film (STF) depends on the vapor incidence angle used while fabricating the chiral STF by physical vapor deposition. The four wave numbers associated with planewave propagation in a Faraday chiral medium (FCM) with relatively huge magnetoelectric coupling give rise to enhanced possibilities for negative-phase-velocity propagation and, therefore, negative refraction. They can also give rise to the phenomenon of negative reflection. Analysis of electromagnetic planewave propagation in a medium which is a spatiotemporally homogeneous, temporally nonlocal, isotropic, chiral medium in a comoving frame of reference shows that the medium is both spatially and temporally nonlocal with respect to all non-co-moving inertial frames of reference. Using the Lorentz transformations of electric and magnetic fields, we show that plane waves which have positive phase velocity in the comoving frame of reference can have negative phase velocity in certain non-co-moving frames of reference. We studied the durations and average speeds of videopulses transmitted through chiral sculptured thin films using a finite-difference algorithm. The chiral STF was either linear or possessed an intensity-dependent permittivity. Videopulse durations tended to decrease with increasing carrier wavelength and to increase, for given carrier wavelength and polarization state, when the chiral STF was nonlinear with intensity-dependent permittivity. The rate of decrease in durations with wavelength was less than that for longer-duration pulses. The effect of the circular Bragg phenomenon was swamped by the wide bandwidth possessed by videopulses. Two measures of videopulse average speed did not change much with carrier wavelength, and decreased slightly for a given carrier wavelength and polarization state in the nonlinear case. The scope for negative-phase-velocity (NPV) propagation in a particulate composite material, based upon isotropic dielectric-magnetic constituent material phases which do not themselves support NPV propagation, is examined using the extended Bruggeman homogenization formalism. Unlike the conventional Bruggeman formalism, the extended formalism takes into account the dimensions of the constituent particles. Planewave propagation with hyperbolic/hyperboliclike characteristics in uniaxial dielectric media is investigated. Guided wave propagation in a parallel-plate waveguide with Kronig–Penney morphology is analyzed. Modes in the photonic band-gap (PBG) structure can be classified as either transverse electric or transverse magnetic with respect to the propagation direction. Above the modal cut-off frequencies, band gaps exist where propagation is forbidden. Guided wave propagation in a circular waveguide filled with dielectric materials in the Kronig–Penney morphology is theoretically examined. Allowed and forbidden frequency bands in these ideal photonic band-gap (PBG) structures are obtained for the TEz and TMz propagation modes by invoking the Bloch theorem. Results show the many engineering possibilities for designing electromagnetic filters for ideal structures. Filtering by real PBG structures with a finite number of unit cells is also studied by using the scattering matrix technique. Radiation due to six canonical configurations for the source current density embedded in a structurally chiral medium is analyzed theoretically. Chiral sculptured thin films (STFs) are periodically anisotropic, and exhibit the circular Bragg phenomenon over a certain wavelength regime on axial excitation. Here the Bragg-Pippard (BP) formalism is extended in order to homogenize linear bianisotropic-in-bianisotropic particulate composites, assuming the inclusion particles to be ellipsoidal. The concept of local homogenization is invoked in the visible and subvisible frequency regimes to estimate the permittivity dyadics of thin-film helicoidal bianisotropic media (TFHBM)—a canonical class of sculptured thin films with a helicoidally periodic microstructure—made of a metal. Examination of the components of the permittivity dyadics, as well as of the co- and cross-polarized reflectances of axially excited, metallic TFHBM half spaces, reveals that three different absorbing-dielectric-to-metal transitions will occur as the metallic volumetric fraction is increased, but only two will be optically sensed using normally incident plane waves. The optical response of a thin-film helicoidal bianisotropic medium (TFHBM) slab to a normally incident plane wave is shown to be affected by a substrate and a lid, both nondissipative. The theoretical transmissivity of the TFHBM changes with the incorporation of the substrate and the lid, as does the optical rotation. The apparent circular dichroism changes slightly in the Bragg regime, but the true circular dichroism does not appear to be greatly affected by the substrate and lid. The chiroferrite medium is conceptualized as a homogenized composite medium (HCM) comprising a magnetically biased ferrite and an isotropic chiral medium as its components. Chiroplasmas and chiroferrites were originally theoretically conceptualized as media which combine the properties of isotropic chiral media with those of dielectric/magnetic gyrotropic media. We clarify here a problem concerning the correct characterization of such media through their frequency-domain constitutive relations. The reflection of a normally incident wideband pulse by a half-space whose permittivity and permeability obey the one-resonance Lorentz model is calculated. A bilayer comprising two matched dielectric sculptured nematic thin films (SNTFs) with S-shaped morphology is shown to display almost perfect reflection in a narrow frequency range when illuminated by normally incident plane waves. The frequency-dependent constitutive relations of a simple symmetric bianisotropic medium (SSBM) are stated as ${\b D}= {A}{\kern-0.8em \raise -1ex\hbox{=}} \cdot (\epsilon {\b E}- \beta {\b H}) \hbox{ and } {\b B}= {A}{\kern-0.8em \raise -1ex\hbox{=}} \cdot (\beta {\b E} + \mu {\b H})$, where A??? is a real symmetric dyadic. After an affine transformation is used, expressions for the fields in the source regions are derived for this medium. The obtained results may be used to determine the scattering response of an electrically small bianisotropic particle embedded in a SSBM, and can therefore also be used to homogenize a wide class of particulate composites. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nonlinear optics commonly employs dielectric materials wherein the nonlinear polarization is mediated by the electric field. We show, by means of an example, that the nonlinear polarization can be mediated by the magnetic field also in particulate composites formed by mixing nonlinear dielectrics with isotropic chiral media at molecular-length scales.
