The velocity field and temperature field are crucial for metal foams to be used as a heat exchanger, but they are difficult to obtain through physical experiments. In this work, the fluid flow behavior and heat transfer performance in open-cell metal foam were numerically studied. Porous 3D models with different porosities (55–75%) and pore sizes (250 μm, 550 μm, and 1000 μm) were created based on the porous structure manufactured by the Lost Carbonate Sintering method. A wide flow velocity range from 0.0001 m/s to 0.3 m/s, covering both laminar and turbulent flow regimes, is fully studied for the first time. Pressure drop, heat transfer coefficient, permeability, form drag coefficient, temperature and velocity distributions were calculated. The calculated results agree well with our previous experimental results, indicating that the model works well. The results showed that pressure drop increased with decreasing porosity and increasing pore size. Permeability increased and the form drag coefficient decreased with increasing porosity, and both increased with increasing pore size. The heat transfer coefficient increased with increasing velocity and porosity, whereas it slightly decreased with increasing pore size. The results also showed that at high velocity, only the metal foam close to the heat source contributes to heat dissipation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microscale electronics have become increasingly more powerful, requiring more efficient cooling systems to manage the higher thermal loads. To meet this need, current research has been focused on overcoming the inefficiencies present in typical thermal management systems due to low Reynolds numbers within microchannels and poor physical properties of the working fluids. For the first time, this research investigated the effects of a connector with helical geometry on the heat transfer coefficient at low Reynolds numbers. The introduction of a helical connector at the inlet of a microchannel has been experimentally tested and results have shown that this approach to flow augmentation has a great potential to increase the heat transfer capabilities of the working fluid, even at low Reynolds numbers. In general, a helical connector can act as a stabilizer or a mixer, based on the characteristics of the connector for the given conditions. When the helical connector acts as a mixer, secondary flows develop that increase the random motion of molecules and possible nanoparticles, leading to an enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient in the microchannel. Otherwise, the heat transfer coefficient decreases. It is widely known that introducing nanoparticles into the working fluids has the potential to increase the thermal conductivity of the base fluid, positively impacting the heat transfer coefficient; however, viscosity also tends to increase, reducing the random motion of molecules and ultimately reducing the heat transfer capabilities of the working fluid. Therefore, optimizing the effects of nanoparticles characteristics while reducing viscous effects is essential. In this study, deionized water and deionized water–diamond nanofluid at 0.1 wt% were tested in a two-microchannel system fitted with a helical connector in between. It was found that the helical connector can make a great heat transfer coefficient enhancement in low Reynolds numbers when characteristics of geometry are optimized for given conditions. Surface porosity is an important means of enhancing boiling heat transfer. In this paper, two kinds of composite porous structures of surface micropore + square channel and framework micropore + square channel were prepared by selective laser melting technology using AlSi10Mg as the powder material. The effect of composites with different pore forms on boiling heat transfer was investigated in pool boiling experiments. It was found that controlling the thickness of the powder layer manufactured by selective laser melting can change the surface roughness of the sample, and the sandblasting treatment reduced the surface roughness of the samples. The average heat transfer coefficient of the rough surface composite porous structure sample was increased by 40% compared to the sandblasted sample. The micropores on the surface of the sample and inside the framework significantly enhanced the heat transfer coefficient of the composite porous structure. The presence of surface micropores increased the heat transfer area and the vaporization core density of the composite porous structure and exhibited excellent heat transfer coefficient improvement in the low heat flux region. The framework microporous composite porous structure can form effective gas–liquid diversion at high heat flux and obtain higher heat transfer performance. Building thermal insulation and energy conservation have become urgent problems in the field of civil engineering because they are important for achieving the goal of carbon neutralization. Thermal conductivity is an important index for evaluating the thermal insulation of materials. To study the influence of different porosity levels on the thermal conductivity of materials, this paper established a random distribution model using MATLAB and conducted a comparative analysis using COMSOL finite element software and classical theoretical numerical calculation formulas. The thermal conductivity of composite materials was determined based on a theoretical calculation formula and COMSOL software simulations, and the theoretical calculation results and simulation results were compared with the measured thermal conductivity of the composites. Furthermore, the influence of the width of the gaps between the materials on the heat transfer process was simulated in the fabricated roof structure. The results showed the following: (1) The thermal conductivity values calculated using the Zimmerman model were quite different from those calculated using the Campbell-Allen model and those calculated using the COMSOL software; (2) The thermal conductivity values calculated using the theoretical calculation formula were lower than the measured data, and the maximum relative error was more than 29%. The COMSOL simulation results were in good agreement with the measured data, and the relative error was less than 5%; (3) When the gap width was less than 60 mm, it increased linearly with the heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient increased slowly when the gap width was greater than 60 mm. This was mainly due to the thermal bridge effect inside the insulation system. Fog-harvesting performance is influenced by surface wettability, patterned structure and the heat transfer coefficient. In this work, we have prepared different surfaces with a stripe array of superhydrophilic, superslippery and superslippery/superhydrophilic surfaces for fog harvesting on silicon substrates using photolithography and silver-assisted chemical etching. The surface wettability and heat transfer coefficients of the above samples have been investigated. We analyzed the contact angle, sliding angle and transport state of droplets on these surfaces. The fog-harvesting rate of all samples under different voltages of the cooling pad (V = 0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 V) was measured. Results showed that the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface could achieve rapid droplet nucleation, directional transport and efficient collection due to its superhydrophilic striated channels and the Laplace pressure difference between different wettability regions. At a condensation voltage of 3.5 V, the fog-harvesting rate efficiencies of the uniformly striped superhydrophilic and superslippery surface were 1351 mg·cm−2·h−1 and 1265 mg·cm−2·h−1, respectively, while the fog-harvesting rate of the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface was 1748 mg·cm−2·h−1. Compared with the original silicon surface, the maximum fog-harvesting rate of the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface was improved by 86.9%. To achieve the required mechanical properties in the heat treatment of steel, it is necessary to have an adequate cooling rate and to achieve the desired final temperature of the product. This should be achieved with one cooling unit for different product sizes. In order to provide the high variability of the cooling system, different types of nozzles are used in modern cooling systems. Designers often use simplified, inaccurate correlations to predict the heat transfer coefficient, resulting in the oversizing of the designed cooling system or failure to provide the required cooling regime. This typically results in longer commissioning times and higher manufacturing costs of the new cooling system. Accurate information about the required cooling regime and the heat transfer coefficient of the designed cooling is critical. This paper presents a design approach based on laboratory measurements. Firstly, the way to find or validate the required cooling regime is presented. The paper then focuses on nozzle selection and presents laboratory measurements that provide accurate heat transfer coefficients as a function of position and surface temperature for different cooling configurations. In order to study the heat transfer of R410A in extreme environments, the properties of several stainless steel and copper-enhanced tubes were evaluated using R410A as the working fluid, and the results were compared with those of smooth tubes. Tubes evaluated include: smooth, herringbone (EHT-HB) and helix (EHT-HX) microgroove, herringbone/dimple (EHT-HB/D); herringbone/hydrophobic (EHT-HB/HY); and composite enhancement 1EHT (three-dimensional). Experimental conditions include a saturation temperature of 318.15K with a saturation pressure of 2733.5 kPa; a mass velocity in the range between 50 and 400 kg/(m2·s); and an inlet quality controlled at 0.8 and an outlet quality of 0.2. Results indicate that the EHT-HB/D tube produces the best overall condensation heat transfer characteristics (high heat transfer performance and low frictional pressure drop). Using the performance factor (PF) to compare tubes for the range of conditions considered, the PF of the EHT-HB tube is greater than one, the PF of the EHT-HB/HY tube is slightly greater than one, and the PF of the EHT-HX tube is less than one. In general, as the mass flow rate increases, PF initially decreases and then increases. Previously reported smooth tube performance models that have been modified (for use with the EHT-HB/D tube) can predict the performance for 100% of the data points to within ±20%. Furthermore, it was determined that the thermal conductivity of the tube (when comparing stainless steel and copper) will have some effect on the tube-side thermal hydraulic performance. For smooth tubes, the heat transfer coefficients (HTC) of copper and stainless steel tubes are similar (with copper tube values being slightly higher). Thermal control systems have been introduced as an important part of electronic devices, enabling thermal management of their electronic components. Loop heat pipe (LHP) is a passive two-phase heat transfer device with significant potential for numerous applications, such as aerospace applications, high-power LEDs, and solar central receivers. Its advantages are high heat transfer capability, low thermal resistance, long-distance heat transfer, and compact structure. The essential role of wick structures on the performance of LHPs has already been highlighted, but no comprehensive review is available that deals with different parameters such as LHP design and wick size, which are largely decisive and effective in achieving a practical level of thermal transmission governed by wick structures. To rely on this necessity, this article summarizes, analyzes, and classifies advancements in the design and fabrication of wick structures. The main conclusion to be drawn after careful monitoring and weighing of the related literature is that LHPs with composites and additively manufactured wicks show a higher heat transfer coefficient than other conventional structures. Indeed, future works should be focused on the design of more structurally efficient wicks, which may allow us to optimize materials and geometrical parameters of wick structure for higher heat transfer through LHPs. The paper presents the method and results of determination of heat transfer coefficient for air-atomized water spray cooling with consideration of infrastructural factors of industrial cooling conveyor, such as effect of accelerated air. The established values of heat transfer coefficient were implemented into a numerical model of cooling line, with special definition of sprayers and the movement of the part subjected to quenching. After quantitative validation on selected samples, the obtained coefficients were used for the solution of the technological problem by means of localized cooling rate enhancement, which forms a case study confirming reliability of the established water spray heat transfer functions and suitability of the determined models for design of thermomechanical controlled processing of complex-geometry parts. The low thermal conductivity of fluids used in many industrial applications is one of the primary limitations in the development of more efficient heat transfer systems. A promising solution to this problem is the suspension of nanoparticles with high thermal conductivities in a base fluid. These suspensions, known as nanofluids, have great potential for enhancing heat transfer. The heat transfer enhancement of sulfonic acid-functionalized graphene nanoplatelet water-based nanofluids is addressed in this work. A new experimental setup was designed for this purpose. Convection coefficients, pressure drops, and thermophysical properties of various nanofluids at different concentrations were measured for several operational conditions and the results are compared with those of pure water. Enhancements in thermal conductivity and in convection heat transfer coefficient reach 12% (1 wt %) and 32% (0.5 wt %), respectively. New correlations capable of predicting the Nusselt number and the friction factor of this kind of nanofluid as a function of other dimensionless quantities are developed. In addition, thermal performance factors are obtained from the experimental convection coefficient and pressure drop data in order to assess the convenience of replacing the base fluid with designed nanofluids. A microchannel radiator is advantageous due to its high efficiency and large boiling heat transfer coefficient of two-phase flow. Based on the research of uniform lattice structures, this study proposed a microchannel heat exchanger with a nonuniform lattice structure. The calculation, optimal formation, and boiling heat transfer performance of the nonuniform lattice structure based on selective laser melting (SLM) were investigated, and heat exchange samples were successfully prepared using SLM. The porosity and pore morphology of the samples were analysed, and the contrast experiments of boiling heat transfer were conducted with deionised water. The results revealed that the heat flow density of the lattice structure was a minimum of 244% higher than that of the traditional liquid-cooled plate. The critical heat flux density of the lattice structure is 110 W∙cm−2, and the critical heat flux density of the traditional flat plate is 45 W∙cm−2. In addition, the effects of cell structures indicated that for frame cells, the heat transfer effect of nonuniform frames was inferior to that of uniform frames; for face-centred cubic (FCC) cells, the nonuniform and uniform frames exhibited the same trend. The melt temperature of aluminum alloys plays a significant role in determining the microstructure characteristic during continuous rheo-extrusion. However, it is difficult to measure the actual melt temperature in the roll-shoe gap. In this work, based on the basic theory of heat transfer, a calculation model for heat transfer coefficient of cooling water/roll interface and melt/roll interface is established. In addition, the relationship between the temperature at the melt/roll interface and the velocity of cooling water is investigated. Combined with the CALPHAD calculation, the melt temperature during solidification in the continuous rheo-extrusion process is calculated. Using this model, the cooling rate of an Al–6Mg (wt.%) alloy melt prepared by continuous rheo-extrusion is estimated to be 10.3 K/s. Accurate prediction and control of the steel plate temperature in the laminar cooling process are very challenging. In this research, an experimental platform was built to measure the heat transfer characteristics of the steel plate in the process of matrix laminar spray cooling when the steel plate is one millimeter away from the upper surface. The "buried couple method" was used, including the cooling temperature and cooling rate. Then, the temperature and the integrated heat transfer coefficient at the steel plate surface were calculated by the time-sequential function method (TSFM). The obtained results show that the fast cooling stage under the water cooling condition occurred in the first 1.5 s, and the measuring point temperature decreased by 8%. The "re-reddening" phenomenon of the steel plate appeared with time, and the measuring point temperature increased by 37%. Second, the maximum calculated difference between the surface temperature and the measuring point temperature was 0.75 °C, and the integrated heat transfer coefficient conformed to the periodic boundary features. The comprehensive convective heat transfer coefficient on the surface was in agreement with the periodic boundary characteristics, and its value exhibited oscillatory attenuation with the cooling process, and the oscillatory peak period was about 6 seconds. Conically corrugated tube is a new type of high-efficiency heat exchange tube. In this paper, the mechanical and heat transfer properties of conically corrugated tubes formed by the cold rolling of smooth tubes are studied through experimental measurement and numerical simulation to lay the foundations for applying the tubes in heat exchangers. The results show that while conically corrugated tube has a lower axial elastic stiffness compared with smooth tube, conically corrugated tube has a higher yield strength and ultimate strength. Unlike smooth tubes, conically corrugated tubes develop three-dimensional stresses when an axial tensile load is applied to them. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient of conically corrugated tube is 15%, 17%, and 115% higher than that of spiral grooved tube, convergent divergent tube, and smooth tube, respectively. Finally, the correlation equations of the axial stress concentration factor, stiffness equivalent coefficient, Nusselt number, and flow resistance coefficient of conically corrugated tubes are obtained for engineering application. Heat transfer under flow boiling is better in a rectangular channel filled with open-cell metal foam than in an empty channel, but the high pressure drop is a drawback of the empty channel method. In this study, various types of metal foam insert configurations were tested to reduce the pressure drop while maintaining high heat transfer. Specifically, we measured the boiling heat transfer and pressure drop of a two-phase vertical upward flow of R245fa inside a channel. To measure the pressure and temperature differences of the metal foam, differential pressure transducers and T-type thermocouples were used at both ends of the test section. While the saturation pressure was kept constant at 5.9 bar, the steam quality at the inlet of the test section was changed from 0.05 to 0.99. The channel height, moreover, was 3 mm, and the mass flux ranged from 133 to 300 kg/m2s. The two-phase flow characteristics were observed through a high-speed visualization experiment. Heat transfer tended to increase with the mean vapor quality, and, as expected, the fully filled metal foam channel offered the highest thermal performance. The streamwise insert pattern model had the lowest heat transfer at a low mass flux. However, at a higher mass flux, the three different insert models presented almost the same heat transfer coefficients. We found that the streamwise pattern model had a very low pressure drop compared to that of the spanwise pattern models. The goodness factors of the flow area and the core volume of the streamwise patterned model were higher than those of the full-filled metal foam channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As electronic devices become smaller and more powerful, the demand for micro-scale thermal management becomes necessary in achieving a more compact design. One way to do that is enhancing the forced convection heat transfer by adding nanoparticles into the base liquid. In this study, the nanofluid forced convection heat transfer coefficient was measured inside stainless-steel microchannels (ID = 210 μm) and heat transfer coefficient as a function of distance was measured to explore the effects of base liquid, crystal phase, nanoparticle material, and size on heat transfer coefficient. It was found that crystal phase, characteristics of nanoparticles, the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluid can play a significant role on heat transfer coefficient. In addition, the effects of man-made and commercial TiO2 on heat transfer coefficient were investigated and it was found that man-made anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were more effective to enhance the heat transfer coefficient, for given conditions. This study also conducted a brief literature review on nanofluid forced convection heat transfer to investigate how nanofluid heat transfer coefficient as a function of distance would be affected by effective parameters such as base liquid, flow regime, concentration, and the characteristics of nanoparticles (material and size). This study aims to experimentally investigate the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient behavior using tungsten oxide-based deionized water nanofluids and comparing them to deionized water as conventional fluid. The influence of different dilute volumetric concentrations (0.005%–0.05% Vol.) and applied heat fluxes were examined to see the effect of these parameters on the pool boiling heat transfer performance using nanofluids from a typical horizontal heated copper tube at atmospheric pressure conditions. Results demonstrated that the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient (PBHTC) for both deionized water and nanofluids increased with increasing the applied heat flux. The higher PBHTC enhancement ratio was 6.7% for a volume concentration of 0.01% Vol. at a low heat flux compared to the deionized water case. Moreover, the PBHTC for nanofluids was degraded compared to the deionized water case, and the maximum reduction ratio was about 15% for a volume concentration of 0.05% Vol. relative to the baseline case. The reduction in PBHTC was attributed to the deposition of tungsten oxide nanoflakes on the heating surface during the boiling process, which led to a decrease in the density of the nucleation sites. In this paper, a numerical calculation and application analysis of composite phase change material masonry mortar applied to wall parts are performed during the research process. Instead of the conventional "sandwich" phase change material wall, our research group mainly uses phase change materials in the wall parts to build masonry joints to reduce the thermal bridge effect. The influence of masonry joints on the heat transfer of the wall is demonstrated. A quantitative description of the transient heat transfer coefficient is obtained to measure the heat preservation performance of the phase change material wall. Furthermore, the influence of different proportions of phase change materials on the wall heat transfer in different external environments is discussed, supplemented by the influence of the working range and sensitivity on the heat transfer. In summary, the use of phase change materials in the construction of masonry joints is a great innovation for conventional "sandwich" phase change material walls, optimizing the form, the thermal bridge effect and the heat preservation performance of wall parts. The quantitative description of the transient heat transfer coefficient expands the development of wall heat transfer theories. In addition, the conclusions are of great guiding significance for the structure and the phase change material's blending proportion for the innovative heat preservation phase change material wall. Application of a coating on a mold surface is widely used in the foundry industry. Changes in coating change the heat transfer at the mold–melt interface, which influences the microstructure of the casting. In this study, the effect of boron nitride coating thickness on the interfacial heat transfer and slug microstructure in the Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device (SEED) process was investigated. The temperatures of the semi-solid slug and mold were measured, and the interfacial heat transfer coefficient and heat flux of the mold–slug interface was estimated based on these data. Microstructures of the quenched slugs were also examined. The results indicated that the interfacial heat transfer coefficient decreased with an increase in coating thickness and was sensitive to a coating thickness of less than 0.1 mm. The interfacial heat flux decreased sharply at the early stage, and then slowed down as the swirling time increased and the coating thickened. The coating thickness affected the temperature evolution of the slug at the early stage of the SEED process. As the coating thickness increased from near zero to 1.0 mm, the grain size of the slug increased by ~20 µm and the globular structure of the slug transformed into a dendritic structure.
