The article discusses a study of the dynamics of soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) and transparent exopolymer particle (TEP) pools in coastal ecosystems. In particular, time series of S-EPS and TEP fractions were studied in natural phytoplankton assemblages at the Bay des Veys and Lingreville-sur Mer, two macrotidal sites in the English Channel. The link between TEP production and phytoplankton and nutrient dynamics in spring and summer is suggested. Also noted is the impact of hydrodynamic forcings on TEP concentration variations in autumn and winter. It concludes that the origins of TEP and S-EPS are different as indicated by the different production patterns.

The article presents a study on the response of Posidonia (P.) oceanica to repeated anthropogenic effects of various magnitudes by reconstructing vertical rhizome elongation and previous changes in leaf production. The researchers used a binocular microscope to measure the internodal length of vertical shoots after the old leaf sheaths were removed. They also used multilevel mixed effect models to examine the differences in mean length of vertical rhizomes and mean number of leaves from before to after each of the two periods of disturbance. They confirmed the plasticity of P. oceanica growth modules and the response in P. oceanica rhizome growth induced by environmental variability at the local scale.

The article presents a study which aims to determine the effects of freshwater discharge from Rio de la Plata and beach morphodynamics on the population and distribution of the mole crabs (Emirita brasiliensis) in sandy beaches of Uruguay. The study gathered different data from 16 beaches between July 1999 and April 2001, as well as samples from estuaries. Mole crab samples were collected by using a sheet metal cylinder, measured, weighed and were preserved in 5% buffered formalin. Results show that mole crabs are more abundant in dissipative beaches (areas where salinity is high and phytoplanktons are abundant) compared to the reflective beaches. It suggests that further studies be made to gain more understanding on the source-sink dynamics of sandy beaches.

The article presents a study on the comparison of faunal composition on macrophytes of different function, size and longevity. It states the methods and materials used which parts of plants were sampled with related organism in situ to identify fauna related with habitat forming macrophytes. Accordingly, between animal abundance and habitat size across all macrophytes, there was a positive relationship appeared although there was a variation between the samples. It says that the faunal composition depends on habitat architecture at a spatial micro-scale. It concludes that macrofauna related with macrophytes were mostly highly mobile while fauna with perennial habitats were less mobile. Moreover, small-scale structural complexity was the most essential factor for the faunal composition.

The article presents a study on the restricted gene flow of Jehlius cirratus and Notochthamalus scrabrosus and its implications to coastal ecology and biodiversity along South American Pacific (SAP) coast. The study collected and sequenced the desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of both Chilean barnacles which ecological transition were associated to sharp increase in its larval dispersal. The haplotype frequencies found in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene (mtCOI) of N. scrabrosus and the marginal genetic structure observed in J. cirratus suggest significant differences in selective pressures or dispersal ability between the species. Moreover, it notes that the comparison of these species represents a unique opportunity for a replication in phylogeography

The article focuses on a study which maps the nutrient content and isotopic composition of the macroalga Caulerpa prolifera and the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa in the Bay of Cádiz in Spain. The article discusses a study which evaluates the distribution and in situ behavior, physical or chemical environment, food sources and predators of overwintering Sprat Sprattus sprattus in Bunnerfjorden, Oslofjorden, Norway. The study shows that sprat tolerates hypoxic waters and a hypoxic fjord-basin constitutes an overwintering habitat. It also discovers that negatively buoyant sprat adopts a rise and glide swimming behavior and dormant copepods give a food resource in deep water.
