Inspired by the Stenocara beetle's hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface, we fabricated hexagonally patterned hydrophobic-hydrophilic surfaces consisting of silicon and gold regions using colloidal lithography and selective surface functionalization. We investigated surface wettability for different patterns (hexagonally ordered nanotriangles and nanoholes) and the influence of surface functionalization (octadecanethiol and 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid/octadecyltrichlorosilane (MHA/OTS)). The as-prepared patterned substrates exhibit hydrophilicity, which transforms to hydrophobicity after surface functionalization. The MHA/OTS functionalization results in maximum enhancement in the contact angle (114 ± 0.4°) with the least contact angle hysteresis (19 ± 2°). Fog harvesting studies show that the patterned substrate has a higher water collection rate, a factor of 1.32, than the nonpatterned substrates. A further enhancement in water collection (almost twice) is observed with selective functionalization. The patterned (nanohole) and functionalized (MHA/OTS) substrate facilitates rapid falling of droplets at a frequency of 20 mHz and an average droplet mass of 15 ± 2 mg/cm2. Furthermore, it yielded a maximum water collection rate of 1051 ± 132 mg cm-2 h-1. This work provides valuable insights into the influence of surface wettability and morphology for fog harvesting applications.

The interaction forces between silica surfaces modified to different degrees of hydrophobicity were measured using colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (AFM). A highly hydrophobic silica particle was prepared with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS), and the interaction forces were measured against silica substrates modified to produce surfaces of varying hydrophobicity. The interaction forces between the highly hydrophobic particle and a completely hydrophilic silicon wafer surface fitted well to the DLVO theory, indicating that no additional (non-DLVO) forces act between the surfaces. When the silicon wafer surface was treated to produce a contact angle of water on surface of 40°, an additional attractive force that is longer ranged than the van der Waals force was observed between the surfaces. The range and magnitude of the attractive force increase with the contact angle of water on the substrate. Beyond the effect on the contact angle, the hydrocarbon chain length and the terminal groups of hydrophobic layer on the substrate only have a minor effect on the magnitude of the force, even when the substrate is terminated with polar carboxyl groups, provided the hydrophobicity of the other surface is high.

The nanofriction between a silicon nitride probe and both a silicon wafer and an octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-coated surface is studied in saline solution by using lateral force microscopy (LFM). The effects of surface charge on the nanofriction in an electrolyte as well as its velocity dependence are studied, while the surface charge at the solid-liquid interface is adjusted by changing the pH value of the electrolyte. The results show that the nanofrictional behavior between the probe and the samples in an electrolyte depends strongly on the surface charge at the solid-liquid interface. When the probe and the sample in the electrolyte are charged with the same sign, a repulsive electrostatic interaction between the probe and the sample is produced, leading to a reduction in nanofriction. In contrast, when the two surfaces are charged with the opposite sign, nanofriction is enhanced by the attractive electrostatic interaction between the probe and the sample. The velocity dependence of nanofriction in an electrolyte is believed to be tied to charge regulation referring to a decreasing trend in surface charge densities for the two approaching charged surfaces in an electrolyte. When the probe slides on the sample at a low velocity, charge regulation occurs and weakens the electrostatic interaction between the probe and the sample. As a result, nanofriction is reduced for surfaces charged with the opposite sign, and it is enhanced for surfaces charged with the same sign. When the sliding velocity between the probe and the sample is high, there is insufficient time for charge regulation to occur. Thus, the friction pair shows a larger nanofriction when the surfaces are charged with the opposite sign and a smaller nanofriction when the surfaces are charged with the same sign when compared to the case of a lower sliding velocity.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of dodecyltrichlorosilane (DTS) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on silica are studied by molecular dynamics simulations at 298 K and 1 bar. The coverage (number of alkylsilane molecules per surface area) is systematically varied. The results yield insight into the properties of the alkylsilane SAMs, which complement experimental studies from the literature. Relationships are reported between thickness, tilt angle, and coverage of alkylsilane SAMs, which also hold for alkylsilanes other than DTS and OTS. They are interpreted based on the information on molecular ordering in the SAMs taken form the simulation data. System size and simulation time are much larger than in most former simulation works on the topic. This reduces the influence of the initial configuration as well as the periodic boundary conditions and hence minimizes the risk of artificial ordering. At the same time, more reliable statistics for the calculated properties can be provided. The evaluation of experimental data in the field is often based on strongly simplified models. The present simulation results suggest that some of these lead to errors, concerning the interpretation of experimental results, which could be avoided by introducing more realistic models.

Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic sponges were fabricated by immersion in an ethanol solution of octadecyltrichlorosilane. The resulting coating strongly adheres to the sponges after curing at 45 °C for 24 h. Absorption capacities of 42-68 times the polymerized octadecylsiloxane sponge weight were obtained for toluene, light petroleum, and methylsilicone oil. These adsorption capacities were maintained after 50 cycles.

Quinoxaline cavitands (QxCav) are transferred by Langmuir-Schaefer method on selfassembled monolayers (SAMs) of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecyl-3- aminopropyltrimethoxysilyl chloride (DMOAP) on fused silica substrates. The molecular architectures of both the hydrophobic SAMs templates and the hybrid cavitand-organosilanes bilayers at the solid-air interface are investigated and correlated by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy. The results show that QxCav are always in the closed vase configuration and orient with their principal axis normal to the substrates. The role of the alkyl chains density in the SAM templates on the QxCav transfer ratio is pointed out.

We synthesized porous aluminum oxide nanostructures directly on a quartz crystal microresonator and investigated the properties of superhydrophobic surfaces, including the surface wettability, water permeation, and underwater superhydrophobic stability. After increasing the pore diameter to 80 nm (AAO80), a gold film was deposited onto the AAO80 membrane, and the pore entrance size was reduced to 30 nm (AAO30). The surfaces of the AAO80 and AAO30 were made to be hydrophobic through chemical modification by incubation with octadecanethiol (ODT) or octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS), which produced three different types of superhydrophobic surfaces on quartz microresonators: OTS-modified AAO80 (OTS-AAO80), ODT-modified AAO30 (ODT-AAO30), and ODT-OTS-modified AAO30 (TS-AAO30). The loading of a water droplet onto a microresonator or the immersion of a resonator into water induced changes in the resonance frequency that corresponded to the water permeation into the nanopores. TS-AAO30 exhibited the best performance, with a low degree of water permeation, and a high stability. These features were attributed to the presence of sealed air pockets and the narrow pore entrance diameter.

To achieve a better understanding of the mechanical effects of adsorbed films at surface contacts, methods were developed to map and examine the pressure distribution of nanoasperity contacts, modeled by molecular dynamics simulation. The methods employ smoothing functions to project the atomic forces obtained in contact simulation onto the contact plane for fitting to standard continuum contact models and subsequent analysis. Importantly, these methods allow for contact evolution between nanoscopic asperity-asperity contacts to be examined because these are the central load-bearing junctions at interfaces. To demonstrate the application and features of this approach, it was employed to examine the evolution of contact between silica nanoasperities, with an increasing density of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) films employed as a model adsorbate film. Linearly increasing contact radius and linearly decreasing maximal pressure were observed as a function of the film packing density. Because contact between the underlying, high-energy silica surfaces is undesirable, the evolution of silica contact was also examined using these same methods. As more molecules were introduced into the contact, a sharp transition was observed from the narrow, high-pressure interaction between the underlying substrates, to a broad, substantially lower pressure interaction, indicating a sharp transition from the dry to lubricated condition. To study the dependence of these behaviors on contact morphology, silica nanoasperities in contact with a flat silica surface were also examined. Similar behavior, including the broadening of the contact area and the minimization of direct surface contact, were observed. The method developed herein is applicable to a variety of systems and can be employed to optimize surface protection and pressure redistribution by boundary lubricants. This method can also be extended to AFM adhesion measurements where a detailed understanding of the true contact area is critical for the quantitative determinations of molecular forces and local surface mechanics.

Self-assembled octadecyltrichlorosilane ((OTS), CH3(CH2)17SiCl3) layers on hydroxyl-terminated silicon oxide (SiO2) were prepared. The monolayers were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle measurements; their conformation was studied before, during, and after contact with a polymer (either PDMS or PTFE) surface using the vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS) technique. During contact, the effect of pressure was studied for both polymer surfaces, but in the case of PTFE, the effect of shear rate on the contact was simultaneously studied. The VSFS response of the monolayers with pressure was almost entirely due to changes in the real area of contact with the polymer and therefore the Fresnel factors, whereas sliding caused disorder in the previously all-trans monolayer, as evidenced by a significant increase in the population of gauche defects.

The boundary slip condition is an important property, and its existence can reduce fluid drag in micro/nanofluidic systems. The boundary slip on various surfaces immersed in water and various electrolytes has been widely studied. For the surfaces immersed in oil, the boundary slip on superoleophilic and oleophilic surfaces has been studied, but there is no data on oleophobic and superoleophobic surfaces. In this paper, experiments are carried out to study electrostatic force and boundary slip on superoleophilic, oleophobic, and superoleophobic surfaces immersed in deionized (DI) water, hexadecane, and ethylene glycol. In addition, the surface charge density of the samples immersed in DI water is quantified. Results show that the electrostatic force and the absolute value of the surface charge density of an octadecyltrichlorosilane surface are larger than that of a polystyrene surface, and the electrostatic force and the absolute value of surface charge density of a superoleophilic surface are larger than that of oleophobic and superoleophobic surfaces. For the same liquid, the larger contact angle leads to a larger slip length at the solid-liquid interface. For the same surface, the larger liquid viscosity leads to a larger slip length. The relevant mechanisms are discussed in this paper.

Reduction of fluid drag is important in the micro-/nanofluidic systems. Surface charge and boundary slip can affect the fluid drag, and surface charge is also believed to affect boundary slip. The quantification of surface charge and boundary slip at a solid-liquid interface has been widely studied, but there is a lack of understanding of the effect of surface charge on boundary slip. In this paper, the surface charge density of borosilicate glass and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) surfaces immersed in saline solutions with two ionic concentrations and deionized (DI) water with different pH values and electric field values is quantified by fitting experimental atomic force microscopy (AFM) electrostatic force data using a theoretical model relating the surface charge density and electrostatic force. Results show that pH and electric field can affect the surface charge density of glass and OTS surfaces immersed in saline solutions and DI water. The mechanisms of the effect of pH and electric field on the surface charge density are discussed. The slip length of the OTS surface immersed in saline solutions with two ionic concentrations and DI water with different pH values and electric field values is measured, and their effects on the slip length are analyzed from the point of surface charge. Results show that a larger absolute value of surface charge density leads to a smaller slip length for the OTS surface.

The self-polymerization of 4-chloromethylphenyltrichlorosilane (CMPS) was studied within spatially confined nanoholes on Si(111) using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface platforms of nanoholes were fabricated within a film of octadecyltrichlorosilane using immersion particle lithography. A heating step was developed to temporarily solder the silica mesospheres to the surface, to enable sustained immersion of mesoparticle masks in solvent solutions for the particle lithography protocol. Substrates with a film of mesospheres were heated briefly to anneal the particles to the surface, followed by a rinsing step with sonication to remove the silica beads to generate nanopores within an octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) film. Nanopatterned surface templates were immersed in CMPS solutions and removed at different time points to monitor the successive growth of nanostructures over time. Analysis of AFM images after progressive exposure of the nanoholes to solutions of CMPS provided quantitative information and details of the surface self-assembly reaction. Pillar nanostructures of CMPS with different heights and diameters were produced exclusively within the exposed areas of the substrates. Throughout the reaction, the surrounding matrix of OTS-passivated substrate did not evidence growth of CMPS; the surface assembly of CMPS was strictly confined within the nanopores. The diameter of the CMPS nanostructures grew to match the initial sizes of the confined areas of Si(111) but did not spread out beyond the edges of the OTS nanocontainers. However, the vertical growth of columns was affected by the initial size of the sites of uncovered substrate, evidencing a direct correspondence; larger sites produced taller structures, and correspondingly the growth of shorter structures was observed within smaller nanoholes. The heights of CMPS nanostructures indicate that multilayers were formed, with taller columns generated after longer immersion times. These experiments offer intriguing possibilities for using particle lithography as a general approach for nanoscale studies of molecular self-assembly.

Gallium nitride, with a thin passivating layer of Ga2O3, has been functionalized with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Water contact angles, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used for characterization of the bare and functionalized surfaces. The SAMs are stable in acetonitrile, but both the hydrophobic OTS SAM and the hydrophilic APTES SAM completely desorb after 1-24 h of immersion in water and common buffers. The concentration of gallium in solution after a clean GaN chip is immersed in water is consistent with dissolution of roughly one monolayer of interfacial gallium oxide. Dissolution of this oxide layer could account for the loss of SAMs from GaN surfaces.

We have employed in situ X-ray reflectivity (IXRR) to study the adsorption of a variety of proteins (lysozyme, cytochrome c, myoglobin, hemoglobin, serum albumin, and immunoglobulin G) on model hydrophilic (silicon oxide) and hydrophobic surfaces (octadecyltrichlorosilane self-assembled monolayers), evaluating this recently developed technique for its applicability in the area of biomolecular studies. We report herein the highest resolution depiction of adsorbed protein films, greatly improving on the precision of previous neutron reflectivity (NR) results and previous IXRR studies. We were able to perform complete scans in 5 min or less with the maximum momentum transfer of at least 0.52 Å(-1), allowing for some time-resolved information about the evolution of the protein film structure. The three smallest proteins (lysozyme, cytochrome c, and myoglobin) were seen to deposit as fully hydrated, nondenatured molecules onto hydrophilic surfaces, with indications of particular preferential orientations. Time evolution was observed for both lysozyme and myoglobin films. The larger proteins were not observed to deposit on the hydrophilic substrates, perhaps because of contrast limitations. On hydrophobic surfaces, all proteins were seen to denature extensively in a qualitatively similar way but with a rough trend that the larger proteins resulted in lower coverage. We have generated high-resolution electron density profiles of these denatured films, including capturing the growth of a lysozyme film. Because the solution interface of these denatured films is diffuse, IXRR cannot unambiguously determine the film extent and coverage, a drawback compared to NR. X-ray radiation damage was systematically evaluated, including the controlled exposure of protein films to high-intensity X-rays and exposure of the hydrophobic surface to X-rays before adsorption. Our analysis showed that standard measuring procedures used for XRR studies may lead to altered protein films; therefore, we used modified procedures to limit the influence of X-ray damage.

Taking plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposited porous SiOCH (p-SiOCH) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) as model cases, this study elucidates the chemical reaction pathways for alkyl-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on porous carbon-doped organosilica films under N(2)-H(2) vacuum plasma illumination. In contrast to previous findings that carboxylic groups are found in alkyl-based SAMs only by exposure to oxygen-based plasma, this study discovers that, upon exposure to reductive nitrogen-based vacuum plasma, surface carboxylic functional groups can be instantly formed on OTS-coated p-SiOCH films. Particular attention is given to developing a multisurface modification process, starting with the modification of p-SiOCH films by N(2)-H(2) plasma and continuing with SAM deposition and plasma patterning; this ultimately leads to site-selective seeding for the spatially controlled fabrication of Cu-wire metallization by electroless deposition. Plasma diagnosis and X-ray near-edge absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies show that, by adequately controlling the plasma parameters, the bulk of the p-SiOCH films are free from plasma damage (in terms of degradation in bonding structures and electrical properties); the formation of the seed-trapping carboxylic functional groups on the surface, the key factor for the validity of this new seeding process, is due to a water-mediated chemical oxygenation route.

We investigate the surface-directed phase separation of spin-coated polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS/PMMA) blends on prepatterned octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-glass substrates under various experimental conditions. As a result of tandem processes of spinodal decomposition and selective wetting of polymer components during spin-coating, low-energy OTS stripes and high-energy glass surfaces laterally arrange the phase-separated polymers according to the chemical pattern on the substrate. Optimal pattern replication was achieved when the length scale of phase separation, controlled via the polymer concentration of the spin-coating solution, matched the smallest feature dimension in a striped chemical pattern possessing two alternating distances between stripes. It was also shown that polymer blend patterns were most closely registered with the underlying substrate when the PS/PMMA composition ratio (30/70, w/w) matched the areal fraction of OTS on the glass surface (∼30%). The influence of solvents demonstrated that a solvent with a relatively low volatility, such toluene, was required for patterning so that domain feature sizes were able to coarsen to the size of the patterned features before film vitrification. As well, we showed that the technique and optimized conditions developed in this study could be applied to pattern photoluminescent CdS quantum dots into microscale arrays of parallel lines via spin-coating onto transparent OTS-glass substrates.

Hydrophobic, methyl-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surfaces can be used to reduce friction. Among methyl-terminated SAMs, the frictional properties of alkanethiol SAMs and silane SAMs have been well-studied. In this research, we investigated friction of methyl-terminated n-hexatriacontane (C36) SAM and compared its friction properties with the alkanethiol and silane SAMs. Alkane SAM does not have an anchoring group. The alkane molecules stand on the surface by physical adsorption, which leads to a higher surface mobility of alkane molecules. We found that C36 SAM has a higher coefficient of friction than that of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) silane. When an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip was swiped across the alkane SAM with a loading force, we found that the alkane SAM can withstand the tip loading pressure up to 0.48 GPa. Between 0.48 and 0.49Ga, the AFM tip partially penetrated the SAM. When the tip moved away, the deformed SAM healed and maintained the structural integrity. When the loading pressure was higher than 0.49 GPa, the alkane SAM was shaved into small pieces by the tip. In addition, we found that the molecular tilting of C36 molecules interacted with the tribological properties of the alkane SAM surface. On one hand, a higher loading force can push the rod-like alkane molecules to a higher tilting angle; on the other hand, a higher molecular tilting leads to a lower friction surface.

In this paper, we first present the study of the formation of phenyltrichlorosilane film and self-assembled monolayers of phenylalkyltrichlorosilane (PATCl), pentafluoro-phenylalkyltrichlorosilane (PFATCl), and a mixture of the two, on silicon covered by its native oxide. These monolayers are shown to grow in two steps with characteristic time constants. The first step is characterized by a similar time constant of growth for all the studied trichlorosilane molecules and attributed to chemisorption. The second step corresponds to the arrangement between molecules, accelerated by the presence of the short alkyl chain (3-4 carbon atoms), and by mixing phenyl and pentafluoro-phenyl terminal moieties, which is accounted for by hydrogen bonding CH···FC and/or attractive quadrupolar interactions within a face-to-face phenyl/pentafluoro-phenyl alternating stack arrangement. Such results should allow improvement of intermolecular stacking within conjugated molecular domains, which is particularly important for molecular electronic devices. In the second part, we studied how PATCl, PFATCl, and their mixture phase separate with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) molecules in various ratios. The way to improve phase separation was studied modifying aromatic ring to ring as well as aromatic-aliphatic interactions. OTS island size and coverage are shown to be smaller with the aromatic phase that involves stronger ring to ring interactions, i.e., attractive interactions between the phenyl species by mixing phenyl and pentafluoro-phenyl rings. The best phase separation is obtained with PFATCl as the aromatic molecule. If nanoislands of aromatic molecules could not be observed in these experiments, we show that they are attainable by mixing OTS and aromatic small organotriethoxysilanes whose grafting kinetics is slower. These results pave the way to the control improvement of the composition and nanostructuration of SAMs, essential for their further use within molecular devices.

We report observations of spontaneous formation of micrometer-sized water droplets within micrometer-thick films of a range of different oils (isotropic and nematic 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) and silicone, olive and corn oil) that are supported on glass substrates treated with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and immersed under water. Confocal imaging was used to determine that the water droplets nucleate and grow at the interface between the oils and OTS-treated glass with a contact angle of approximately 130 degrees. A simple thermodynamic model based on macroscopic interfacial energetic arguments consistent with the contact angle of 130 degrees, however, fails to account for the spontaneous formation of the water droplets. zeta-potential measurements performed with OTS-treated glass (-59.0 +/- 16.4 mV) and hydrophobic monolayers formed on gold films (2.0 +/- 0.7 mV), when combined with the observed absence of droplet formation under films of oil supported on the latter surfaces, suggest that the charge of the oil-solid interface promotes partitioning of water to the interfacial region. The hydrophobic nature of the OTS-treated glass promotes dewetting of water accumulated in the interfacial region into droplets (a thin film of water is seen to form on bare glass). The inhibitory effect on droplet formation of both salt (NaCl) and sucrose (0.1-500 mM) added to the aqueous phase was similar, indicating that both solutes lower the chemical potential of the bulk water (osmotic effect) sufficiently to prevent partitioning of the water to the interface between the oil and supporting substrates. These results suggest that charged, hydrophobic surfaces can provide routes to spontaneous formation of surface-supported, water-in-oil emulsions.

We demonstrate a new strategy for producing hierarchical polymer nanostructures, which combines nanoscale self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers at the air-water interface with microscale templated assembly of the resulting aggregates on chemically patterned substrates. Aggregates are formed via interfacial self-assembly of 141k polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO, MW = 141k, 11.4 wt % PEO) or a blend of 185k PS-b-PEO (MW = 185k, 18.9 wt % PEO) and PS-coated CdS nanoparticles to form strandlike copolymer or copolymer-nanoparticle aggregates. Using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques, the aggregates are then transferred to patterned substrates possessing alternating hydrophilic/hydrophobic stripes, obtained by microcontact printing octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on glass. The aggregates are transferred under various conditions of surface pressure, orientation of the patterned substrate, and withdrawal speed. Templated assembly of aggregates into the hydrophilic substrate domains is achieved when the hydrophilic/hydrophobic stripes are oriented perpendicular to the water surface during LB transfer; this is explained by surface energy heterogeneities along the subphase-substrate contact line, which induce selective dewetting and concomitant monolayer rearrangement at the drying front. In contrast, parallel orientation of stripes results in nonselective transfer of the monolayer without registration to the underlying surface pattern. By studying the effect of surface pressure, we show that packing constraints imposed by compression of aggregates to high surface densities prevent the formation of patterned LB films that match the established periodicity of the OTS-patterned glass. As well, it is shown that efficient transfer of aggregates to the patterned glass requires slower substrate withdrawal speeds compared to transfer to unpatterned hydrophilic glass.

Area-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) of lead sulfide (PbS) was achieved on octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS)-patterned silicon substrates. We investigated the capability of ODTS self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to deactivate the ALD PbS surface reactions as a function of dipping time in ODTS solution. The reaction mechanism was investigated using density functional theory (DFT), which showed that the initial ALD half-reaction is energetically unfavorable on a methyl-terminated SAM surface. Conventional photolithography was used to create oxide patterns on which ODTS SAMs were selectively grown. Consequently, PbS thin films were grown selectively only where ODTS was not present, whereas deposition was blocked in regions where ODTS was grown. The resulting fabricated patterns were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy, which demonstrated that ALD PbS was well confined to defined patterns with high selectivity by ODTS SAMs. In addition, AFM lithography was employed to create nanoscale PbS patterns. Our results show that this method can be applied to various device-fabrication processes, presenting new opportunities for various nanofabrication schemes and manifesting the benefits of self-assembly.

The spreading of liquid alkanes over solid surfaces has important applications in painting, coatings, lubrication, and petroleum tertiary recovery. The role of the vapor-phase mass transport accompanying liquid spreading has not been well studied because it is difficult to separate the contributions from the liquid spreading and the vapor-phase transport that occurred at the same time. We used the engineered surface patterns to study the vapor-phase mass transport during liquid spreading. First, we fabricated several hydrophilic, carboxylic acid-terminated patterns (OTSpd) on a hydrophobic, methyl-terminated octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) surface. These OTSpd patterns did not connect to each other. Next, we let an alkane drop spread within one OTSpd pattern. The liquid alkane could not spread to other OTSpd patterns because OTS separated them; however, the alkane molecules in the vapor phase could migrate and adsorb on other OTSpd patterns. Therefore, the contributions from the liquid spreading and the vapor-phase transport were separated and could be investigated independently. We found that during the spreading of the liquid alkane, mass transport through the vapor phase cannot be ignored. Alkane molecules adsorbed on the OTSpd surface with their backbones parallel to the surface in the first few layers. Additional alkane molecules adsorbed on these parallel layers to form the seaweed-shaped layers in which the alkane molecules stood up. Our study showed that the parallel layers formed from the vapor-phase mass transport before the liquid alkane spread. Therefore, the liquid alkane does not spread over the more strongly binding OTSpd surface. It actually spreads over the parallel alkane layer, which formed from its own vapor.

Microcontact printing (microCP) and electroless plating are combined to produce microscale patterns of silver on glass substrates. Silver patterns with feature sizes of 0.6-10 microm stripes are fabricated using two methods. (1) The printing seeding layer (PSL) method is to apply microCP to directly print the catalyst Sn pattern for further electroless plating. (2) The printing masking layer (PML) method is to use microCP to print the octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self-assembled monolayer as a masking layer on glass substrates, which then become Sn-activated in the unstamped regions by immersing the substrates in stannous chloride solution. After the electroless silver plating, the PML method has a better selectivity of silver deposition than the PSL method. In addition, variation of the deposited silver thickness as a function of the plating time and temperature is discussed.

An analytic multiscale expression is derived that yields conditions for effective liquid lubrication of oscillating contacts via surface flow over multiple time and length scales. The expression is a logistics function that depends on two quantities, the fraction of lubricant removed at each contact and a scaling parameter given by the logarithm of the ratio of the contact area to the product of the lubricant diffusion coefficient and the cycle time. For industrial machines the expression confirms the need for an oil mist. For magnetic disk drives, the expression predicts that existing lubricants are sufficient for next-generation data storage. For micro-electrical-mechanical systems, the expression predicts that a bound + mobile lubricant composed of tricresyl phosphate on an octadecyltrichlorosilane self-assembled monolayer will be effective only for temperatures greater than approximately 200 K and up to approximately MHz oscillation frequencies.

We use atomic force microscopy (AFM) to determine the frictional properties of nanoscale single-asperity contacts involving octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayers and silicon. Quantitative AFM measurements in the wearless regime are performed using both uncoated and OTS-coated silicon AFM tips in contact with both uncoated and OTS-coated silicon surfaces, providing four pairs of either self-mated or unmated interfaces. Striking differences in the frictional responses of the four pairs of interfaces are found. First, lower friction occurs with OTS present on either the tip or substrate, and friction is yet lower when OTS is present on both. Second, the shape of the friction versus load plot strongly depends on whether the substrate is coated with OTS, regardless of whether the tip is coated. Uncoated substrates exhibit the common sublinear dependence, consistent with friction being directly proportional to the area of contact. However, coated substrates exhibit an unusual superlinear dependence. These results can be explained qualitatively by invoking molecular plowing as a significant contribution to the frictional behavior of OTS. Direct in situ comparison of two intrinsic OTS structural phases on the substrate is also performed. We observe frictional contrast for different local molecular packing densities of the otherwise identical molecules. The phase with lower packing density exhibits higher friction, in agreement with related previous work, but decisively observed here in single, continuous images involving the same molecules. Lateral stiffness measurements show no distinction between the two OTS structural phases, demonstrating that the difference in friction is not due to divergent stiffnesses of the two phases. Therefore, the packing density directly affects the interface's intrinsic resistance to friction, that is, the interfacial shear strength.

In this paper we present a study of using oxygen plasma for chemically modifying inert hydrocarbon self-assembled monolayers of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS-SAMs) and rendering active surfaces for protein immobilization. Detailed surface modification and protein immobilization were characterized by using ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy, and fluorescence microscopy. Our XPS results showed that the surface reaction between OTS-SAMs and oxygen plasma can generate new surface functional groups such as alcohol (C-O), aldehyde (C=O), and carboxylic acid (O-C=O), and their compositions can be controlled by using different treatment times and powers. A short treatment time ( approximately 1 s) and high power (10 W) can lead to a higher density of aldehyde groups, which can serve as linker groups for protein immobilization through the formation of Schiff bases with the amine groups of proteins. By using the fluorescence immunostaining method, we confirmed that human immunoglobulin (IgG) can be immobilized on a glass slide, only if the surface was decorated with OTS-SAMs and if the OTS-SAMs were pretreated with oxygen plasma. The protein immobilized on the oxygen-plasma-treated surface can only be recognized by using a highly specific antibody, FITC-anti-IgG, but not FITC-anti-biotin.

A new process of applying molecular resists to block HfO2 and Pt atomic layer deposition has been investigated. Monolayer films are formed from octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS) or tridecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyltrichlorosilane (FOTS) and water vapor on native silicon oxide surfaces and from 1-octadecene on hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces through a low-pressure chemical vapor deposition process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data indicates that surfaces blocked by these monolayer resists can prevent atomic layer deposition of both HfO2 and Pt successfully. Time-dependent studies show that the ODTS monolayers continue to improve in blocking ability for as long as 48 h of formation time, and infrared spectroscopy measurements confirm an evolution of packing order over these time scales.

Bimolecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of aromatic and aliphatic chlorosilanes were self-assembled onto silica, and their characteristics were established by contact angle measurement, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Three aromatic constituents (phenyltrichlorosilane, benzyltrichlorosilane, and phenethyltrichlorosilane) were studied in combination with four aliphatic coadsorbates (butyltrichlorosilane, butyldimethylchlorosilane, octadecyltrichlorosilane, and octadecyldimethylchlorosilane). Our results demonstrate that whereas SAMs made of trichlorinated organosilanes are densely packed, SAMs prepared from monochlorinated species are less dense and poorly ordered. In mixed systems, trichlorinated aromatics and trichlorinated aliphatics formed SAMs with highly tunable compositions; their surfaces were compositionally homogeneous with no large-scale domain separation. The homogeneous nature of the resulting SAM was a consequence of the formation of in-plane siloxane linkages among neighboring molecules. In contrast, when mixing monochlorinated aliphatics with trichlorinated aromatics, molecular segregation occurred. Although the two shortest aromatic species did not display significant changes in orientation upon mixing with aliphatics, the aromatic species with the longest polymethylene spacer, phenethyltrichlorosilane, displayed markedly different orientation behavior in mixtures of short- and long-chain aliphatics.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of omega-substituted biphenylthiolates (omega-MBP) on gold were characterized by spectral ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), and vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (VSFG). The vibrational studies of the SAMs were supported by an ab initio frequency analysis at HF/6-31G and BP86/6-31G levels, yielding an assignment of all relevant spectral features in the range from 3500 to 1200 cm(-1). We were able to demonstrate that hydroxy-terminated MBP (HMBP) SAMs are basically featureless in the range of the CH stretching vibrations. Accordingly, the adsorption of a SAM of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on top of this model surface could be studied. A red shift of the C-O stretching vibration from 1281 to 1264 cm(-1) was observed during the chemisorption of OTS, thus allowing for a quantification of the number of OTS molecules involved in surface binding of OTS, which was found to be about 26% on average.

The thermal stability of perfluoralkylsiloxane monolayers in a vacuum is investigated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for temperatures up to 600 degrees C. 1H,1H,2H,2H,-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS) monolayers are deposited on oxidized Si(100) surfaces from the vapor phase with various degrees of surface coverage. Significant monolayer desorption is observed to occur at temperatures below 300 degrees C regardless of the initial monolayer coverage. The desorption mechanism follows first-order kinetics and is independent of the initial coverage. Removal of FDTS is found to occur by the loss of the entire molecular chain, as evidenced by the fact that the CF(3)/CF(2) peak area ratios remain unaffected by the annealing process although CF(n)()/Si peak ratio declines with annealing. This is in sharp contrast to the behavior observed for octadecyltrichlorosilane monolayer for which elevated temperature leads to C-C bond breakage and successive shortening of the alkyl chain. It is also shown that the binding energy and the shape of the F 1s line are good indicators of the degree of disorder in the chain, as well as a measure of the interaction of the chain with the silicon surface.

We have studied the refractive index of a thin aqueous film between microscopic hydrophobic surfaces using evanescent wave atomic force microscopy (EW-AFM). An evanescent wave, generated at a solid-liquid interface, is scattered by AFM tips or glass particles attached to AFM cantilevers. The scattering of this wave is used to determine the refractive index as a function of separation between these surfaces. Measurements were performed on surfaces that were rendered hydrophobic with octadecyltrichlorosilane, which produces solid-water contact angles in excess of 90 degrees. For AFM tips, the average refractive index in the thin film was always equal to that of water when the film was thicker than approximately 100 nm. At smaller separations, the refractive index was always greater than or equal to that of water. This is inconsistent with the formation of air or vapor films and consistent with a small amount of organic material between the surfaces. For colloidal spheres (R approximately 10 microm), we were not able to detect changes in the refractive index of the thin film between the sphere and plate.

We have analyzed surface diffusion properties of a variant of Thermomyces lanuginosa lipase (TLL) on hydrophilic silica and silica methylated with dichlorodimethylsilane (DDS) or octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). For this study a novel method for analysis of diffusion on solid surfaces was developed. The method is based on fluorescence recovery after photobleaching using confocal microscopy. When a rectangular area of the sample was photobleached, fluorescence recovery could be analyzed as one-dimensional diffusion, resulting in simplified mathematical expressions for fitting the data. The method was initially tested by measuring bovine serum albumin diffusion on glass, which led to a diffusion coefficient in good correspondence to earlier reports. For the analysis of TLL diffusion, ellipsometry data of TLL adsorption were used to calibrate fluorescence intensity to surface density of lipase, enabling measurements of the diffusion coefficient at different surface densities. The average diffusion coefficient was calculated in two time intervals after adsorption. Mobile fraction and diffusion coefficient were lowest on the OTS surface, when extrapolated to infinite surface dilution. Moreover, the diffusion rate decreased with time on the hydrophobic surfaces. Our observations can be explained by the surface dependence on the distribution of orientations and conformations of adsorbed TLL, where the transition from the closed to the catalytically active open and more hydrophobic structure is important.

We have investigated the growth of octadecylsiloxane (ODS) self-assembled monolayers on mica. Freshly cleaved muscovite mica and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) dissolved in toluene (c = 1.0 mmol/L) have been used as substrate and precursor, respectively. The water content of the adsorption solution was between 14.6 and 16.6 mmol/L. Adsorption experiments were carried out in a temperature range between 5 and 45 degrees C, and the obtained submonolayer ODS films were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Besides the morphology of the films, also information on the surface coverage has been obtained by quantitative evaluation of the AFM images. Depending on the temperature, evidence for both ordered and disordered expanded ODS phases has been found. The pronounced maximum in surface coverage--in contrast to adsorption on silicon substrates--at a temperature of about 27 degrees C and the different morphology of the submonolayer films as compared to silicon substrates could be explained in terms of a deposition, diffusion, and aggregation (DDA) model.

The molecular aggregation state of octadecylsiloxane monolayers on Si-wafer substrate surfaces prepared from octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) or octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) was investigated on the basis of grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), contact angle measurement, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and scanning force microscopy (SFM). The OTMS monolayer was prepared by using the chemical vapor adsorption (CVA) method, and the OTS monolayers, which were used as reference samples, were prepared either by chemisorption (OTS-S) or by the water-cast method (OTS-W). The GIXD, FT-IR, lateral force microscopic (LFM) measurements, and FE-SEM observation revealed that the alkyl chains in the OTMS monolayers prepared using the CVA method are in an amorphous state at room temperature. According to the LFM measurement, the transition temperature from the hexagonal crystalline phase to the amorphous phase was found to be ca. 333 K for the OTS-S monolayer prepared by the chemisorption method. However, the phase transition was not observed in the OTMS monolayer prepared by the CVA method. Also, the atomic force microscopic (AFM) observation and the contact angle measurement showed that the OTMS monolayer prepared by the CVA method has a uniform surface when compared to the OTS monolayers. These results indicated that organosilane compounds in the monolayer prepared by the CVA method were immobilized on the Si-wafer substrate surface in an amorphous state, which was quite different from the hexagonal crystalline state obtained by the chemisorption and water-cast methods.

The growth kinetics and morphologies of self-assembled monolayers deposited by contact printing 7-octenyltrichlorosilane (OCT) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on Si(100) were studied by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. We found that, for both OCT and OTS, full monolayers could be obtained at room temperature after printing times of 120-180 s; the printing-based monolayer assembly processes follow apparent Langmuir adsorption kinetics, with the measured film growth rates increasing both with the ambient humidity and with concentration of the ink used to load the stamp. At a dew point of 10 degrees C and an ink concentration (in toluene) of 50 mM, the observed film growth rate constant is 0.05 s(-)(1). When the printing was carried out at a lower ambient humidity (dew points of 1-3 degrees C), the measured rates of assembly were approximately a factor of 2 slower. Increasing the deposition temperature from 25 to 45 degrees C under these conditions increased the film growth rate only slightly. The morphology of the films depends on the identity of the ink. Uniform, high-coverage films could be obtained readily from the eight-carbon chain length adsorbate OCT, provided that the stamp was not overloaded with the ink; for high concentrations outside of the optimal range, the surface presented significant numbers of adsorbed particles ascribed, in part, to siloxane polymers formed by hydrolysis of the ink on the stamp before printing. In marked contrast, for the 18-carbon adsorbate OTS, the printed films always consisted of a mixture of a uniform monolayer plus adsorbed polysiloxane particles. The different film morphologies seen for OCT and OTS are proposed to result from the different transfer efficiencies of the organotrichlorosilane relative to polysiloxane hydrolysis products formed during the printing process. These transfer efficiencies exhibit sensitivities related to the permeation of the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamp by the silane reagents. Short-chain inks such as OCT evidently permeate the PDMS stamp more deeply than longer-chain inks such as OTS. This difference, and the different diffusion rates of ink vs oligomeric silane hydrolysis products, determines the film morphology obtained by contact printing. The mass transfer dynamics of the process thus yield surface layers derived from varying quantities of siloxane oligomers, which subsequently transfer to the substrate along with unhydrolyzed silane adsorbate during the printing step. The structural evolution of the contact-printed films so obtained is strikingly different from that of SAMs prepared by immersion.

Patterned poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) brushes were fabricated on oxidized silicon wafers by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide from a micropatterned initiator. The patterned surface initiator was prepared by microcontact-printing octadecyltrichlorosilane and backfilling with 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane followed by amidization with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid. XPS and FTIR confirmed the chemical structure of the surface initiator and the PNIPAAm brushes. Surface analysis techniques, including ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, and X-ray reflectometry (XRR), were used to characterize the thickness, roughness, hydrophilicity, and density of the polymer brushes. Tapping-mode AFM imaging confirmed the successful patterning of the PNIPAAm brushes on the oxidized silicon substrates. Variable temperature ellipsometry indicated that the lower critical solution temperature of the hydrated PNIPAAm brush was broad, occurring over the range of 20-35 degrees C. A solvatochromic fluorophore, 6-propionyl-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene (Prodan), in the PNIPAAm brush layers yielded a very similar emission to that in DMF, which can be attributed to the similarity of their chemical structures. Fluorescence microscopy further proved the successful patterning of the polymer brushes and suggested that the Prodan is localized in the patterned PNIPAAm brushes and excluded from the surrounding octadecyltrichlorosilane regions.

The self-assembly of nonionic surfactants in bulk solution and on hydrophobic surfaces is driven by the same intermolecular interactions, yet their relationship is not clear. While there are abundant experimental and theoretical studies for self-assembly in bulk solution and at the air-water interface, there are only few systematic studies for hydrophobic solid-water interfaces. In this work, we have used optical reflectometry to measure adsorption isotherms of seven different nonionic alkyl polyethoxylate surfactants (CH3(CH2)I-1(OCH2CH2)JOH, referred to as CIEJ surfactants, with I = 10-14 and J = 3-8), on hydrophobic, chemically homogeneous self-assembled monolayers of octadecyltrichlorosilane. Systematic changes in the adsorption isotherms are observed for variations in the surfactant molecular structure. The maximum surface excess concentration decreases (and minimum area/molecule increases) with the square root of the number of ethoxylate units in the surfactant (J). The adsorption isotherms of all surfactants collapse onto the same curve when the bulk and surface excess concentrations are rescaled by the bulk critical aggregation concentration (CAC) and the maximum surface excess concentration. In an accompanying paper we compare these experimental results with the predictions of a unified model developed for self-assembly of nonionic surfactants in bulk solution and on interfaces.

We report a new experimental method allowing the direct observation of Langmuir films at the air/water interface by atomic force microscopy. Using this method, a quantitative observation of multilayer formation in various systems, such as gold nanoparticles and polymerized octadecyltrichlorosilane layers, could be achieved. In particular, a high vertical resolution is reached (around 1 nm) which enables topographic measurements on Langmuir multilayers in the submicrometer range.

Gradient surfaces are widely employed in biological studies for protein adsorption and cell attachment and growth. They also offer great potential in the areas of fluid flow and combinatorial experimental design for obtaining material properties and behaviors. Gradient surfaces are created with organosilanes by using the diffusion techniques proposed by Ewling and modified by Chaudhury. However, these techniques have limitations. They either generate a significant amount of organic waste or require well-controlled deposition conditions. In this paper, we propose a fast, convenient, reproducible, and inexpensive method that generates gradient surfaces with minimum waste generation. Particularly, we have adopted Whitesides's contact-printing technique to achieve a gradient by gradually varying the contact time over the contacted area using octadecyltrichlorosilane. We developed a novel process to fabricate particle wires through self-assembly on hydrophilic regions of SAMs (self-assembled monolayer). A SAM of octadecyltrichlorosilane was formed on a silicon substrate and modified by UV irradiation to create a pattern of hydrophobic octadecyl and hydrophilic silanol groups. Ethanol or water containing particles (550 or 800 nm diameter) were dropped onto a patterned SAM. The solution was separated into two droplets with a liquid bridge between the droplets along the hydrophilic regions of a patterned SAM. The droplets and the liquid bridge were used as a mold for fabrication of a two-dimensional pattern of colloid crystals. Particle wire was formed between two droplets and colloid crystals such as an opal structure were formed at both ends of the particle wire after drying the solution. The carryover of surfactant ahead of contact lines on hydrophilic surfaces results in unusual wetting behavior of surfactant solutions, such as the autophobic effect. This carryover of surfactant ahead of the contact line is due to the strong interactions between the hydrophilic surface and the headgroup of ionic and nonionic surfactants. However, in the case of a nonionic surfactant and a hydrophobic surface, the possibility of self-assembly of surfactant ahead of the contact line has been neglected because of the absence of any obvious strong interactions and any unusual wetting behavior. In this paper, we provide evidence of carryover of a nonionic surfactant (octaethyleneoxide monododecyl ether, C12E8) ahead (i.e., on the solid−vapor, SV, side) of advancing and receding contact lines on hydrophobic self-assembled monolayers of octadecyltrichlorosilane. We have developed a novel method for site-selective deposition (SSD) of thin films using a seed layer. The deposition process of anatase TiO2 from an aqueous solution was evaluated in detail using a quartz crystal microbalance, and it was found that the nucleation and initial growth of anatase TiO2 were accelerated on amorphous TiO2 thin films compared with silanol, amino, phenyl, or octadecyl groups. Amorphous TiO2 thin films were deposited on silanol regions of a patterned octadecyltrichlorosilane self-assembled monolayer from a titanium dichloride diethoxide solution. This substrate was immersed in an aqueous solution containing Ti precursor to be used as a template for SSD. Anatase TiO2 was selectively deposited on amorphous TiO2 regions to form thin films. Consequently, a micropattern of anatase TiO2 thin film which had high feature edge acuity was successfully fabricated in an aqueous solution.

The growth of self-assembled monolayers of alkylsiloxanes on silicon surfaces through adsorption of alkyltrichlorosilanes at various concentrations in toluene has been investigated. The influence of high alkylsilane concentrations up to 50 mmol/L on the ordering of the films has been studied. Characterization of the films has been performed with tapping mode atomic force microscopy and ellipsometry. Different alkylsilanes have been used in order to study both the effect of the chain length and the age of the precursor solution on the ordering of the molecules in solution as well as on the substrate surface. For freshly prepared solutions with a high concentration of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS, C 1 8 ), irregular rough films with a maximum surface coverage of 70% have been observed. For C 1 0 , C 1 2 , and C 1 6 alkylsilanes, comparatively flat films have been obtained under the same conditions. For OTS, such flat films can only be achieved after prolonged aging of the precursor solution. The results are discussed in terms of ordering depending on different experimental parameters.

The ability of a planar array infrared (PA-IR) spectrograph to obtain spatially resolved infrared spectra (infrared line images) of a monolayer film with reasonable signal-to-noise-ratios is demonstrated, and the first infrared line images of a monolayer film ever recorded are reported. In this context, octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayer films self-assembled on glass substrates were investigated as a function of three different solvents (hexane, benzene, and toluene). It is shown that the PA-IR line images could be used to investigate surface coverage and conformational order as a function of spatial location. A frequency versus absorbance relationship was observed that can be interpreted as a well-defined correlation between conformational order and surface coverage. The plot of this relationship, which looks similar to a phase diagram containing a first-order phase transition, is in excellent agreement with that reported recently (Liu, Y.; Wolf, L. The formation of octadecyltrichlorosilane monolayers on titanium dioxide was studied in structures consisting of microdomains of TiO2 and noble metals such as gold and platinum. On the basis of Fourier transform infrared and Auger electron spectroscopies, it was found that the density of the monolayers on the TiO2 surface was significantly higher in these structures than in plain samples that did not contain the metallic microdomains. This effect, whose range was unexpectedly long (up to 80 microns), was found to depend on the stripes' width and upon the ratio between the width of the metallic domains and that of the titanium dioxide domains. Applying a positive potential bias to the titanium dioxide during the chemisorption of the monolayer had a similar effect.

A novel self-assembled dual-layer film as a potential excellent lubricant for micromachines was successfully prepared on single-crystal silicon substrate by chemical adsorption of stearic acid (STA) molecules on self-assembled monolayer of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) with terminal amino group. The structure and morphology of the film were characterized by means of contact-angle measurement, ellipsometric thickness measurement, Fourier transformation infrared spectrometric analysis, and atomic force microscopic analysis. The micro- and macro-tribological properties of the dual-layer film were investigated as well. We report an experimental system that permits optical imaging of the reversible adsorption of amphiphiles at stable, planar interfaces formed between aqueous phases and immiscible thermotropic liquid crystals. Copper grids (hole sizes of 19−292 μm and thicknesses of 18−20 μm) supported on glass surfaces treated using octadecyltrichlorosilane were impregnated with nematic 4-cyano-4‘-pentylbiphenyl (5CB). Films of 5CB confined within the grids were stable (did not dewet the grid) to immersion into either water, aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), or aqueous solutions of SDS containing NaCl. Whereas the anchoring of 5CB on the copper grid dominated the appearance of the 5CB when using grids with hole sizes of 19 μm, reversible changes in the orientation of the liquid crystal (observed using polarized light) caused by adsorption of SDS at the liquid crystal−aqueous interface were readily observed when using grids with hole sizes larger than 19 μm. Polarization-dependent near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy was used to determine the ordering of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) molecules in self-assembled (SA) films on Si/SiOx. Coverages of adsorbed material for different SA films were determined by integration of the NEXAFS signal due entirely to the C 1s absorption. The structures and coverages of the SA films deposited by chemisorption from solution in toluene were determined for two different deposition conditions: (1) open to the atmosphere and (2) water- and oxygen-free conditions inside a drybox. SA films of OTS deposited under ambient air conditions grew as islands on the substrate and were well-ordered as indicated by a strong polarization-dependence in the NEXAFS spectra. For depositions performed in the drybox, ordered or disordered films grew uniformly over the substrate. Lateral force microscopy (LFM) was used to evaluate the frictional behavior of surfaces modified with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and immersed in n-alcohols (CH3(CH2)xOH where x = 0−8,11) as a function of applied normal load, sliding velocity, and solvent chain length. SAMs were formed from octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on silicon/silicon dioxide substrates. The objective was to investigate how the solvent environment affected the frictional behavior of OTS and to characterize the effectiveness of OTS as a boundary lubricant in liquid environments for applications such as fluidic self-assembly and microelectromechanical devices.
