There has been a long debate on how and where active sites are created for molecular adsorption and catalysis in zeolites, which underpin many important industrial applications. It is well accepted that Lewis acidic sites (LASs) and basic sites (LBSs) as active sites in pristine zeolites are generally believed to be the extra-framework Al species and residue anion (OH - ) species formed at fixed crystallographic positions after their synthesis. However, the dynamic interactions of adsorbates/reactants with pristine zeotype materials to "create" sites during real conditions remain largely unexplored. Herein, direct experimental observation of the establishment of induced active sites in silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) by an adsorbate is for the first time made, which contradicts the traditional view of the fixed active sites in zeotype materials. Evidence shows that an induced frustrated Lewis pair (FLP, three-coordinated framework A l as LAS and Si O (H) as LBS) can be transiently favored for heterolytic molecular binding/reactions of competitive polar adsorbates due to their ineffective orbital overlap in the rigid framework. High-resolution magic-angle-spinning solid-state NMR, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and ab initio molecular dynamics demonstrate the transformation of a typical Brønsted acid site (Al(OH)Si) in SAPO zeolites to new induced FLP structure for hetereolytic binding upon adsorption of a strong polar adsorbate. Our unprecedented finding opens up a new avenue to understanding the dynamic establishment of active sites for adsorption or chemical reactions under molecular bombardment of zeolitic structures.

Understanding structural responses of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to external stimuli such as the inclusion of guest molecules and temperature/pressure has gained increasing attention in many applications, for example, manipulation and manifesto smart materials for gas storage, energy storage, controlled drug delivery, tunable mechanical properties, and molecular sensing, to name but a few. Herein, neutron and synchrotron diffractions along with Rietveld refinement and density functional theory calculations have been used to elucidate the responsive adsorption behaviors of defect-rich Zr-based MOFs upon the progressive incorporation of ammonia (NH 3 ) and variable temperature. UiO-67 and UiO-bpydc containing biphenyl dicarboxylate and bipyridine dicarboxylate linkers, respectively, were selected, and the results establish the paramount influence of the functional linkers on their NH 3 affinity, which leads to stimulus-tailoring properties such as gate-controlled porosity by dynamic linker flipping, disorder, and structural rigidity. Despite their structural similarities, we show for the first time the dramatic alteration of NH 3 adsorption profiles when the phenyl groups are replaced by the bipyridine in the organic linker. These molecular controls stem from controlling the degree of H-bonding networks/distortions between the bipyridine scaffold and the adsorbed NH 3 without significant change in pore volume and unit cell parameters. Temperature-dependent neutron diffraction also reveals the NH 3 -induced rotational motions of the organic linkers. We also demonstrate that the degree of structural flexibility of the functional linkers can critically be affected by the type and quantity of the small guest molecules. This strikes a delicate control in material properties at the molecular level.

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) undergo structural transformations in response to physical and chemical stimuli. This is hard to control because of feedback between guest uptake and host structure change. We report a family of flexible MOFs based on derivatized amino acid linkers. Their porosity consists of a one-dimensional channel connected to three peripheral pockets. This network structure amplifies small local changes in linker conformation, which are strongly coupled to the guest packing in and the shape of the peripheral pockets, to afford large changes in the global pore geometry that can, for example, segment the pore into four isolated components. The synergy among pore volume, guest packing, and linker conformation that characterizes this family of structures can be determined by the amino acid side chain, because it is repositioned by linker torsion. The resulting control optimizes noncovalent interactions to differentiate the uptake and structure response of host-guest pairs with similar chemistries.

We report a record-high SO 2 adsorption capacity of 12.3 mmol g -1 in a robust porous material, MFM-601, at 298 K and 1.0 bar. SO 2 adsorption in MFM-601 is fully reversible and highly selective over CO 2 and N 2 . The binding domains for adsorbed SO 2 and CO 2 molecules in MFM-601 have been determined by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments, giving insights at the molecular level to the basis of the observed high selectivity.

During nuclear waste disposal process, radioactive iodine as a fission product can be released. The widespread implementation of sustainable nuclear energy thus requires the development of efficient iodine stores that have simultaneously high capacity, stability and more importantly, storage density (and hence minimized system volume). Here, we report high I 2 adsorption in a series of robust porous metal-organic materials, MFM-300(M) (M = Al, Sc, Fe, In). MFM-300(Sc) exhibits fully reversible I 2 uptake of 1.54 g g -1 , and its structure remains completely unperturbed upon inclusion/removal of I 2 . Direct observation and quantification of the adsorption, binding domains and dynamics of guest I 2 molecules within these hosts have been achieved using XPS, TGA-MS, high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, Raman, terahertz and neutron spectroscopy, coupled with density functional theory modeling. These complementary techniques reveal a comprehensive understanding of the host-I 2 and I 2 -I 2 binding interactions at a molecular level. The initial binding site of I 2 in MFM-300(Sc), I 2 I , is located near the bridging hydroxyl group of the [ScO 4 (OH) 2 ] moiety [I 2 I ···H-O = 2.263(9) Å] with an occupancy of 0.268. I 2 II is located interstitially between two phenyl rings of neighboring ligand molecules [I 2 II ···phenyl ring = 3.378(9) and 4.228(5) Å]. I 2 II is 4.565(2) Å from the hydroxyl group with an occupancy of 0.208. Significantly, at high I 2 loading an unprecedented self-aggregation of I 2 molecules into triple-helical chains within the confined nanovoids has been observed at crystallographic resolution, leading to a highly efficient packing of I 2 molecules with an exceptional I 2 storage density of 3.08 g cm -3 in MFM-300(Sc).

Natural gas (methane, CH 4 ) is widely considered as a promising energy carrier for mobile applications. Maximizing the storage capacity is the primary goal for the design of future storage media. Here we report the CH 4 storage properties in a family of isostructural (3,24)-connected porous materials, MFM-112a, MFM-115a, and MFM-132a, with different linker backbone functionalization. Both MFM-112a and MFM-115a show excellent CH 4 uptakes of 236 and 256 cm 3 (STP) cm -3 (v/v) at 80 bar and room temperature, respectively. Significantly, MFM-115a displays an exceptionally high deliverable CH 4 capacity of 208 v/v between 5 and 80 bar at room temperature, making it among the best performing metal-organic frameworks for CH 4 storage. We also synthesized the partially deuterated versions of the above materials and applied solid-state 2 H NMR spectroscopy to show that these three frameworks contain molecular rotors that exhibit motion in fast, medium, and slow regimes, respectively. In situ neutron powder diffraction studies on the binding sites for CD 4 within MFM-132a and MFM-115a reveal that the primary binding site is located within the small pocket enclosed by the [(Cu 2 ) 3 (isophthalate) 3 ] window and three anthracene/phenyl panels. The open Cu(II) sites are the secondary/tertiary adsorption sites in these structures. Thus, we obtained direct experimental evidence showing that a tight cavity can generate a stronger binding affinity to gas molecules than open metal sites. Solid-state 2 H NMR spectroscopy and neutron diffraction studies reveal that it is the combination of optimal molecular dynamics, pore geometry and size, and favorable binding sites that leads to the exceptional and different methane uptakes in these materials.

Understanding the molecular mechanism of proton conduction is crucial for the design of new materials with improved conductivity. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) has been used to probe the mechanism of proton diffusion within a new phosphonate-based metal-organic framework (MOF) material, MFM-500(Ni). QENS suggests that the proton conductivity (4.5 × 10(-4) S/cm at 98% relative humidity and 25 °C) of MFM-500(Ni) is mediated by intrinsic "free diffusion inside a sphere", representing the first example of such a mechanism observed in MOFs.

A robust binary hydrogen-bonded supramolecular organic framework (SOF-7) has been synthesized by solvothermal reaction of 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)dihydropyridyl)benzene (1) and 5,5'-bis-(azanediyl)-oxalyl-diisophthalic acid (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that SOF-7 comprises 2 and 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)pyridyl)benzene (3); the latter formed in situ from the oxidative dehydrogenation of 1. SOF-7 shows a three-dimensional four-fold interpenetrated structure with complementary O-H···N hydrogen bonds to form channels that are decorated with cyano and amide groups. SOF-7 exhibits excellent thermal stability and solvent and moisture durability as well as permanent porosity. The activated desolvated material SOF-7a shows high CO2 adsorption capacity and selectivity compared with other porous organic materials assembled solely through hydrogen bonding.

Using a combination of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction measurements, we study temperature- and pressure-driven structural distortions in zinc(II) cyanide (Zn(CN)2) and cadmium(II) imidazolate (Cd(im)2), two molecular frameworks with the anticuprite topology. Under a hydrostatic pressure of 1.52 GPa, Zn(CN)2 undergoes a first-order displacive phase transition to an orthorhombic phase, with the corresponding atomic displacements characterized by correlated collective tilts of pairs of Zn-centered tetrahedra. This displacement pattern sheds light on the mechanism of negative thermal expansion in ambient-pressure Zn(CN)2. We find that the fundamental mechanical response exhibited by Zn(CN)2 is mirrored in the temperature-dependent behavior of Cd(im)2. Our results suggest that the thermodynamics of molecular frameworks may be governed by considerations of packing efficiency while also depending on dynamic instabilities of the underlying framework topology.

Porous NOTT-202a shows exceptionally high uptake of SO2, 13.6 mmol g(-1) (87.0 wt %) at 268 K and 1.0 bar, representing the highest value reported to date for a framework material. NOTT-202a undergoes a distinct irreversible framework phase transition upon SO2 uptake at 268-283 K to give NOTT-202b which has enhanced stability due to the formation of strong π···π interactions between interpenetrated networks.

A polar phase of NaNbO(3) has been successfully synthesized using sol-gel techniques. Detailed characterization of this phase has been undertaken using high-resolution powder diffraction (X-ray and neutron) and (23)Na multiple-quantum (MQ) MAS NMR, supported by second harmonic generation measurements and density functional theory calculations. Samples of NaNbO(3) were also synthesized using conventional solid-state methods and were observed to routinely comprise of a mixture of two different polymorphs of NaNbO(3), namely, the well-known orthorhombic phase (space group Pbcm) and the current polar phase, the relative quantities of which vary considerably depending upon precise reaction conditions. Our studies show that each of these two polymorphs of NaNbO(3) contains two crystallographically distinct Na sites. This is consistent with assignment of the polar phase to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)ma, although peak broadenings in the diffraction data suggest a subtle monoclinic distortion. Using carefully monitored molten salt techniques, it was possible to eradicate the polar polymorph and synthesize the pure Pbcm phase.
