A 40-year-old female presented with right mandibular swelling. A panoramic radiograph showed a unilocular radiolucency from the mandibular angle to tooth #46. Biopsy confirmed a schwannoma. Surgical resection was performed via a submandibular approach with a reconstruction plate. Teeth 46 and 47 were extracted. Surgery was complication-free, and histopathology confirmed the tumor's benign nature. The patient was discharged on the second postoperative day. At the 1-year follow-up, she had no paresthesia, normal mouth opening, and full mandibular motion. The reconstruction plate was intact. We report a case of paravertebral retroperitoneal ancient schwannoma (RPAS) with symptoms suggestive of irritable bowel syndrome that was relieved after resection. Very few cases have been reported of RPAS with gastrointestinal symptoms. Increased bowel activity associated with RPAS has not been reported. Gastric schwannomas (GS) are rare mesenchymal tumors from Schwann cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, representing 2–6% of such tumors. We report a 52-year-old woman who experienced abdominal pain, hematemesis, and melena, initially suspected of having a GI stromal tumor through ultrasound and computed tomography abdomen. Despite no active bleeding found during an upper endoscopy, she underwent a successful open subtotal gastrectomy, with histopathology confirming GS. The diagnosis of GS, which may mimic other GI conditions, relies heavily on imaging and histopathological analysis due to its nonspecific symptomatology, including the potential for both upper and lower GI bleeding. Gastric schwannomas are rare, benign neurogenic tumors originating from Schwann cells within the gastrointestinal tract, comprising only 0.2% of all gastric tumors. This report presents the case of a 32-year-old female patient who experienced severe periumbilical pain, nausea, and vomiting, ultimately diagnosed with gastric schwannoma. Initial imaging and endoscopic evaluations suggested a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), but postoperative histopathological analysis confirmed schwannoma, showing S-100 positivity and negativity for CD117, DOG-1, SMA, Desmin, and CD34. The patient underwent successful central gastrectomy with negative surgical margins and no metastasis. Despite a postoperative complication of small bowel obstruction, which was managed conservatively, the patient remained symptom-free with no recurrence over the follow-up period. Gastric schwannomas are rare mesenchymal tumors that arise from the intestinal nerve plexuses. They present with nonspecific symptoms and are often discovered incidentally. We present the case of a 68-year-old patient who had been suffering from abdominal discomfort for 6 months. After a complete examination, including abdominal computed tomography and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, we discovered a submucosal gastric lesion with benign gross features without evidence of lymph node or metastatic involvement. He underwent an open laparotomy. Final pathohistological and immunohistochemically identification of the surgical specimen established the diagnosis of benign schwannoma. Considering the excellent prognosis of the tumor, no adjuvant treatment was suggested other than simple clinical monitoring every 6 months. Despite the accessibility of advanced endoscopy and imaging techniques, the diagnosis of gastric schwannoma is rarely made preoperatively. A schwannoma is a tumor that arises from the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves. Primary pulmonary schwannomas are extremely rare, although they can occur anywhere in the body. Symptoms of endobronchial schwannoma vary depending upon the extent of bronchi blockage by the tumor. Schwannoma is a benign tumor. However, there is a risk of recurrence if a lesion that has developed extraluminal growth is incompletely resected. Here, a 76-year-old female patient presented with dyspnea and cough. An endobronchial tumor was identified originating from the left lower lobe bronchus and had collapsed the left lower lobe and grown to block most of the left main bronchus. We report a case of a robotic-assisted excision of a retrocaval ancient schwannoma. A 40-year-old female presented with generalized weakness and abdominal pain that led to the diagnosis of a retroperitoneal mass adjacent to the pancreas and inferior vena cava. Because of the clinical, imaging, and needle biopsy findings, the patient underwent an elective robotic-assisted retroperitoneal exploration. Surgery for vestibular schwannoma presents unique challenges to the surgeon, given that the primary objectives are achieving complete resection while preserving both facial nerve and hearing function. Consequently, a comprehensive preoperative and perioperative assessment of the tumor is essential to determine its extent, particularly in cases involving dumbbell-shaped lesions. This case report describes our experience in managing a patient with a dumbbell-shaped vestibular schwannoma, where we achieved near-total resection while successfully preserving the patient's facial nerve and hearing function. Schwannomas of the gastrointestinal tract are rare spindle cell tumors that account for 2–6% of mesenchymal tumors. An elderly male was found to have a left colon mass on CT scan and colonoscopy with pathology of fibrotic tissue. A laparoscopic-assisted left hemi-colectomy with primary anastomosis was performed. Pathology demonstrated spindle cell neoplasm arranged in short fascicles that were strongly and diffusely positive for S100. An elderly female was found to have a submucosal lesion on surveillance colonoscopy in the proximal transverse colon. Biopsy with jumbo forceps revealed spindle cell neoplasm positive for S100. Patient underwent an uncomplicated limited non-oncologic segmental transverse colectomy. We report only the ninth case of left and sixth in the transverse colon described in the literature. As is true for other mesenchymal tumors, mucosal biopsy is usually inconclusive and deep biopsy or submucosal resection is required, making pre-operative surgical decision difficult. Schwannomas are benign tumors originating from Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. They mostly occur in the head and neck region but are rare in the larynx, and present with various symptoms. Surgical removal is the recommended treatment. This study presents a 12-year-old female with sudden onset hemoptysis, snoring, difficulty breathing, dysphagia, and voice changes. On examination, she was conscious and had muffled voice while speaking, without signs of respiratory distress. Endoscopic laryngoscopy revealed a large laryngeal mass obstructing the vocal cords. Endoscopic excision and biopsy confirmed the presence of the laryngeal schwannoma. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with normal vocal cord function and no recurrence at follow-up. Schwannoma, also called neurilemmoma, is a rare neurogenic tumor exclusively benign that develops from a variety of glial nerve cells called Schwann cells. We present a 26-year-old female patient who was admitted with a history of dysphagia, headache and swelling going from the lower limit of the ear to the floor of the neck on the left side, which has been slowly progressing for 5 years. Upon local clinical examination, a well-defined mass was revealed, 6 × 5 cm in size, non-painful spontaneously, painful on direct palpation of the left neck. Computed tomography scan has shown a well-circumscribed large mass with heterogenous areas of enhancement in the left parapharyngeal space displacing the submandibular gland superiorly and the carotid sheath anterolaterally and compressing the oropharyngeal airway. Excision of the tumor was done by a combined route without post-operative complications noted. Schwannoma arising from the cervical sympathetic chain are rare slow-growing tumors which represent a diagnostic challenge. We report a 80-year-old female patient presented with anterior neck triangle swelling. The radiological assessment was based on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, which led to a preoperative diagnosis of vagus nerve schwannoma. However, surgical treatment revealed a cervical sympathetic chain mass rather than a vagus nerve mass. A complete removal was performed, and the anatomopathological examination was in favor of a schwannoma. In post-operative state, the patient presented a well-tolerated Horner's syndrome. Schwannoma arising from vagal nerve is a rare tumour. It is a slow-growing, benign mass, but rarely it might undergo malignant transformation. We report a case of a 55-year-old woman with asymptomatic Xth cranial nerve schwannoma in the left side of the neck. Initially, during the ultrasound examination, the tumour was misconceived to be a malignant lymph node. The patient underwent complete surgical excision of it. Histopathological examination revealed typical features of schwannoma. Clinical diagnose of cervical vagal nerve schwannoma is difficult. Schwannoma is a benign and uncommon neoplasm arising from the neural crest cells. The most common tumor sites are the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the head and neck. Retroperitoneal schwannomas account for 1–3% of all schwannomas and are predominantly female. In particular, adrenal schwannoma is very rare, and due to its large size at the time of diagnosis, adrenal schwannoma is frequently misdiagnosed as adrenocortical carcinoma or pheochromocytoma. Adrenal schwannoma is difficult to distinguish it from other adrenal diseases based on imaging findings alone. In this report, we introduce the case of a huge left adrenal schwannoma. Melanotic schwannoma (MS) is a rare nerve sheath neuroectodermal neoplasm. We highlight the use of F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positive emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) standardised uptake value (SUV) results in the diagnosis, staging and monitoring of spinal MS. A 58-year-old female patient had a 6-month history of left leg pain (S1) and no skin lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging reported a possible schwannoma with CT-guided biopsy, indicating a metastatic malignant melanoma. 18F-FDG PET/CT scan revealed only sacral destruction and an SUV score of 3.6. Histopathology results confirmed a malignant melanotic peripheral nerve sheath tumour (schwannoma). In MS, the 18F-FDG PET/CT scan SUV cut-off point can be used to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions, whereas (SUVmax) can predict the histologic response and therefore useful as a 'screening test'. In this study, we present an extremely rare case of thoracic spinal glomangioma located at the thoracic T7–8 level in the foraminal region, mimicking a schwannoma tumor, in a 65-year-old female patient who was admitted to our clinic with a 6-month history of back pain and weakness in legs. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), as defined by immunohistochemical evaluation, are identified along a spectrum ranging from atypical neurofibroma to high-grade MPNST because these tumors are similar in terms of cell shape and tissue components on hematoxylin–eosin (HE) staining. The patient was a 57-year-old male referred to our hospital, with a recurrent red tumor at the anterior commissure of the larynx and submucosal swelling of the right vocal fold. A surgical specimen from a right horizontal partial laryngectomy was evaluated immunohistochemically. A high-grade MPNST lesion was included in the submucosal white tumor, whereas a low-grade MPNST lesion was encountered around the high-grade MPNST lesion. This tumor may involve different malignancies even when it is small. Although intra-tumor heterogeneity in cancers has been reported recently, careful immunohistochemical examination can be important and beneficial for eradicating the tumor while preserving vocal function. Schwannomas that occur in the retroperitoneal cavity are rare. We herein report a patient who underwent safe laparoscopic resection by using a preoperative 3D computed tomography (CT) image and a fluorescent ureteral stent during the surgery. A 47-year-old man presented with left lower abdominal pain. CT showed a 10-cm continuous retroperitoneal tumor originating at the third lumbar nerve in the lower left abdomen. Schwannoma was suspected. We underwent laparoscopic resection of the tumor guided by 3D images obtained preoperatively. A fluorescent ureteral stent was implanted during the surgery to improve visibility and protect the left ureter. The resection was completed without injury of other organs and vessels. The patient was discharged on postoperative Day 5. By performing a preoperative simulation using 3D CT images, we could anticipate the anatomical findings and easily identify them intraoperatively. Ganglioneuroma is a nerve tumor arising from the sympathetic neural crest. It is a rare benign tumor. Retroperitoneum is its second location after the posterior mediastinum. Usually asymptomatic, it is discovered incidentally on imaging. Surgical resection is the sole treatment. The prognosis is good if the diagnosis is made early with quality R0 surgical excision. We report a case in a 14-year-old female admitted to the emergency department for obstructive pyelonephritis. Imaging features found a retroperitoneal mass with characteristics suggestive of a retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma, which was confirmed by histological study. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are defined as malignant tumors arising from or differentiating toward the cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. They occur in about 8–16% within the head and neck region. Morphologically, some malignant tumors look like malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, particularly in the head and neck location; however, immunohistochemistry have a great contribution to distinguish between them. We herein report a novel technique for managing large forehead skin defects that include the eyebrows and upper eyelid. Case 1 was of a 55-year-old woman with an eccrine carcinoma (T2N0M0) at the right forehead, resulting in a skin defect 15 cm in diameter. Case 2 was of an 81-year-old man with a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (T1a N0M0) at the left forehead, resulting in a skin defect 18 cm in diameter. A pedicled temporal hairline flap and free forearm flap were combined and placed on the defect, and good eyebrows and forehead morphology was ultimately achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gastric schwannoma is an extremely rare mesenchymal tumour, representing only 0.2% of all gastric tumours. Obesity is an alarming worldwide disease whose only effective and sustained treatment seems to be surgical. We present a case of a 73-year-old female with epigastric pain and unspecific dyspeptic symptoms, whose diagnostic endoscopic procedures raised suspicion of a gastrointestinal stromal tumour. Given her good performance status, and since grade 2 obesity with high-risk comorbid conditions was present, she was considered a suitable candidate for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Both surgery and immediate postoperative period were uneventful. Histological and immunocytochemical analysis classified the tumour as benign gastric schwannoma. After 24 months, besides being disease-free, she presented an excess weight loss of 90.2%, with improvements in metabolic profile allowing withdrawal from chronic medication. Gastric schwannomas are rare peripheral nerve sheath tumors which are usually found incidentally while undergoing workup for other conditions. Despite their benign nature, they require surgical resection with negative margins. It is important to differentiate gastric schwannomas from gastrointestinal stromal tumors prior to surgical excision, as this can alter the recommended surgical plan. This can be achieved with endoscopic ultrasound and fine needle aspiration with analysis of the sampled tissue using immunohistochemical stains. We present the case of a 68-year-old female patient with an incidental finding of a gastric fundus schwannoma. Laparoscopic gastric wedge resection was performed with complete excision of the tumor and negative margins. Schwannomas are mainly benign tumors arising from the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. These tumors can often be associated with non-specific symptoms, such as abdominal heaviness. In this article, we present a detailed description of the surgical management of a giant sacral schwannoma in an elderly patient, for which intraoperative neuromonitoring made it possible to distinguish easily the nerves of the sacral plexus from which the tumor originated and to remove it without complications. Treatment of these rare and symptomatic giant tumors is still a challenge for surgeons; to treat adequately these tumors; a multidisciplinary approach is required to ensure an optimal therapeutic approach to reduce the risk of recurrence and, on the other hand, is not associated with unnecessary iatrogenic neurological damage. Malignant triton tumor (MTT) is a rare subtype of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) histologically defined by rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. MTTs are primarily found in the head, neck, extremities and trunk, but rare cases of MTT within the buttock, the mediastinum and the retroperitoneum have also been documented. We present the case of a 47-year-old male patient who initially presented with right flank pain and hematuria in July 2019, who was found to have a large pelvic mass below peritoneal reflection. Schwannomas commonly occur in the head and neck region as acoustic neuromas. Facial nerve schwannomas are rare and usually occur in the temporal region. A 57-year-old woman presented with a mass at the right mandibular margin. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a schwannoma located immediately caudal to the mental foramen. We were initially uncertain whether it arose from the trigeminal nerve or the facial nerve. Excision was performed under general anesthesia. The mass was encapsulated and easily detached from the surrounding tissue. The nerve of origin was identified proximal to the tumor. A facial nerve origin was confirmed as the muscles supplied by the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve moved on nerve stimulation. Nerve fibers were not found distal to the tumor, possibly because they had been cut during excision. We believe that this is the first report of a schwannoma arising from the peripheral facial nerve. Neurilemmomas (Schwannomas) of sinonasal tract are very unusual. They are benign, slow-growing, usually solitary encapsulated perineural tumors. They arise from Schwann cells of the neural sheath of the peripheral nervous system including motor, sensory and autonomic nerves. They can occur throughout the body, but the head and neck region demonstrate a higher incidence of occurrence (25–45%). The sinonasal region, however, has the lowest incidence rate with only 3–4%. We report here a rare case of fronto-ethmoid sinus neurilemmoma that is locally destructing the anterior skull base and the lateral orbital wall. A left eye proptosis, diplopia and chemosis were the presenting complaints. Images and histopathology examinations confirmed the diagnosis. The patient underwent tumor resection through Endoscopic Endonasal approach, followed by a functional sinus drainage of the retained secretions. Schwannomas are generally benign tumors, well delimited, resulting from nerve sheaths that are frequently found in the thorax, mainly in the posterior mediastinum. We report a 58-year-old patient who carried out investigations following the appearance of a large right supraclavicular cervical mass associated with anisocoria and eyelid ptosis, histologically diagnosed as ancient schwannoma, completely removed through a cervicotomic approach without opening the chest. Patients with C1 nerve root schwannomas usually present with signs relating to nerve root compression. However, asymptomatic presentations have never been reported. A healthy, 37-year-old female was referred in view of a slow-growing lump in the left posterosuperior aspect of the neck. The lump was asymptomatic and neurological examination was normal. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left C1 nerve root tumour, extending around the C1 vertebra and compressing the thecal sac. The tumour had invaded the basiocciput and was impinging on the left cerebellar hemispheric dura. Stereotactic biopsies of the lesion showed a spindle-cell tumour exhibiting an immunoprofile consistent with a schwannoma. The lesion was surgically excised by blunt dissection using a posterior midline approach. The case report adds to the diverse modes of presentation of C1 nerve root schwannomas, in that such lesions must be included in the differential diagnosis of asymptomatic posterior neck lumps. Background: Retroperitoneal schwannomas are extremely rare, as they account for only 3% of retroperitoneal tumors. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific and of late onset, meaning that these tumors are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Surgical resection is required for histological diagnosis and to prevent possible malignant transformation. Celioscopy offers numerous benefits, reducing postoperative pain and speeding up the patient's return to autonomy, but it can pose a real challenge due to the size of these lesions. Case presentation: We report a case of laparoscopic resection of a very large right-sided retroperitoneal schwannoma, with a particular histological form. Conclusion: Surgical resection in a single unit remains the golden rule, and a laparoscopy can be proposed when the diagnosis is beyond doubt. Schwannomas are peripheral nerve neurogenic tumours and although not common, laryngeal schwannomas can provide a unique challenge in diagnostic and treatment management. There are limited reports in the literature on approaches to management. A73-year-old lady presented to the otolaryngology department after a MRI scan demonstrated an incidental right supraglottic mass. Further investigations included CT scanning and microlaryngoscopy, which only confirmed the presence of the mass with no histology diagnosis. Parapharyngeal space primary neoplasias are infrequent findings in clinics, and schwannoma derived from a peripheral nerve is even rarer in this anatomic area [ 1 ]. The presented case is a patient who was referred to our department with a 3 months progressive soft palate enlargement without related symptoms. The challenge, in these cases, due to the anatomic complex area, is to catch a suitable approach to remove the tumor, according to dimension and surrounding structures. Gastric schwannoma (GS) is a rare neoplasm of the stomach deriving from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves in the stomach. It accounts for 0.2% of all gastric tumors and is mostly benign, slow-growing and asymptomatic. Due to its rarity, GS is not widely recognized by clinicians. Preoperatively, GSs are difficult to differentiate from other mesenchymal tumors, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) or leiomyoma, which develop from mesenchymal stem cells. The optimal management of GS is based on the symptoms of the patient, tumor size and histologic grading. Here, we report the case of a GS in a 73-year-old female who underwent a wedge gastric resection following a clinical diagnosis of GIST. A histological and immunohistochemical study was performed excluding the misdiagnosis of GIST. Plexiform schwannoma is a rare Schwann cell tumor that usually occurs in the head and neck. Here, we report a giant plexiform schwannoma (5.5 × 4.0 cm) in the right plantar aspect of the foot. Intranodal schawnomas are extremely rare. Just a few cases have been described before. Clinical presentation comprises not only symptomatic mass in several anatomical body parts, but also, they can be found during analysis of surgical specimens resected for other reasons. The report is based on the case of an 80-year-old patient who underwent to right hemicolectomy for an adenocarcinoma. The histopathologic analysis revealed one mesenteric intranodal schwannoma in the surgical specimen. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry with positive result for vimentin and S100 protein. Less than 12 cases have been reported in the literature before. Peripheral nerve tumors are relatively uncommon with schwannomas being the most common type. Schwannomas are usually benign encapsulated tumors composed of neoplastic Schwann cells that generally do not transform to malignancy. Many are discovered incidentally as solitary tumors. The cause is unknown. Most occur spontaneously, while some develop in association with genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis type 2 or schwannomatosis. Schwannomas can occur anywhere in the body. They affect all ages, with peaking incidence between ages 20 and 50 years, without predilection to sex or race. Many are asymptomatic; however, presenting signs and symptoms, such as paresthesia and pain, are due to mass effect and direct nerve invasion. Diagnosing includes combinations of thorough physical examination, imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and surgical biopsy. Treatment depends on factors such as location of the tumor and severity of symptoms. Malignant triton tumor (MTT) is a rare subtype of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors with rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. Although the condition may manifest sporadically, it typically affects adult patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. In this article, an extremely rare case of MTT with chest wall origin, which expanded into the left thoracic cavity, is reported. A 64-year-old male was admitted to the institution with sudden shortness of breath. Radiological examination revealed a large mass with massive pleural effusion occupying the patient's left hemithorax. A percutaneous needle biopsy was performed and the patient underwent subtotal tumor resection with left pleuropneumonectomy. Immunohistochemical study of postsurgical pathologic specimens confirmed the diagnosis of MTT. Despite extensive surgical removal, tumor recurrence was reported soon after resection, leading to patient's death 20 days after surgery due to acute respiratory failure. Background Intracisternal Accessory Nerve Schwannomas (ANS) constitute a rare clinical entity with only a few cases reported so far. Their symptoms are usually due to brainstem compression and not manifested until they render of great size. Secondary neuropathy and muscle atrophy are other late signs. The hitherto reported literature advocates a suboccipital craniotomy as a suitable approach. In most of the cases the spinal root was the location tumor arose from. Gross total resection was possible to be carried out in most cases with only sporadic tolerable postoperative deficits reported. Case description We hereby present three cases of patients with intracisternal ANS treated in the same fashion. Two patients were male and one female. Two patients complained of mainly chronic headaches and neck pain, whereas in the third patient the lesion was found incidentally. Only one patient suffered post-operatively cerebrospinal fluid leakage and wound healing complication, which was treated with revision surgery and administration of antibiotics. None of the patients had postoperative neurological deficits. Furthermore, we conducted a review of the relevant literature where we noted that there is no consensus yet with regards to the appropriate surgical approach. Conclusions Based on relevant anatomical studies, we advocate that suboccipital subtonsilar approach provides a wide corridor to the area of lesion allowing complete and safe resection of intracisternal ANS. Schwannomas are peripheral nerve sheath tumours that can present as a rare tumour of GI tract, and even more uncommonly within the colon. We present a case of colonic schwannoma in an asymptomatic patient identified on surveillance colonoscopy. The tumour is of mesenchymal origin and is often challenging to diagnose prior to surgical resection. Appendicular schwannomas are very rare condition with nonspecific clinical symptoms and frequently recognized during pathological examination. They arise less frequently in the gastrointestinal tract and comprise ~1% of all malignant gastrointestinal tumours. We presented a rare case of an appendicular schwannoma that was discovered incidentally in a 25-year-old student diagnosed with appendicular mucocoele with a suspected obstructing tumoural lesion based on computed tomography findings. A colonoscopy examination showed a bulging, nodular, erythematous lesion at the base of the caecum (appendiceal orifice). Biopsies showed mixed inflammatory infiltration in the lamina propria, with lymphoid-filled formations. No evidence of dysplasia or neoplasia. Tumour markers were negative. Appendicular neoplasms, such as schwannomas of the appendix, are rarely associated with nonspecific clinical symptoms and are frequently recognized during pathological examination of the resected appendix. Laparoscopic surgery with a clear resection margin is the cornerstone of treatment for appendicular schwannoma, and it is associated with a favourable prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
