Low- P granulite facies metapelitic migmatites in the Wuluma Hills, Strangways Metamorphic Complex, Arunta Block, preserve evidence of polyphase deformation and migmatite formation which is of the same age of the c. 1730 Ma Wuluma granite. Mineral equilibria modelling of garnet-orthoproxene-cordierite-bearing assemblages usingthermocalc is consistent with peak S3 conditions of 6.0–6.5 kbar and 850–900 °C. The growth of orthopyroxene and garnet was primarily controlled by biotite breakdown during partial melting reactions. Whereas orthopyroxene in the cordierite-biotite mesosome shows enrichment of heavy-REE (HREE) relative to medium-REE (MREE), orthopyroxene in adjacent garnet-bearing leucosome shows depletion of HREE relative to MREE. There is no appreciable difference in major element contents of minerals common to both the mesosome and leucosome. The REE variations can be satisfactorily explained by decoupling of major element and REE partitioning, in the context of appropriate phase-equilibria modelling of a prograde path at ∼6 kbar. Sparse garnet nucleii formed at ∼760 °C, along with concentrated leucosome development and preferentially partitioned HREE. Further heating to ∼800 °C at constant or subtly increasing pressure conditions additionally stabilized orthopyroxene and decreased the garnet mode. Orthopyroxene in the leucosome inherited an REE pattern consequent to the partial consumption of garnet, it being distinct from the REE pattern in mesosome orthoproxene that was mostly controlled by biotite breakdown. Such within-sample variability in the enrichment of heavy REE indicates that caution needs to be exercised in the application of common elemental partitioning coefficients in spatially complex metamorphic rocks. Pods of granulite facies dioritic gneiss in the Pembroke Valley, Milford Sound, New Zealand, preserve peritectic garnet surrounded by trondhjemitic leucosome and vein networks, that are evidence of high- P partial melting. Garnet-bearing trondhjemitic veins extend into host gabbroic gneiss, where they are spatially linked with the recrystallization of comparatively low- P two-pyroxene-hornblende granulite to fine-grained high- P garnet granulite assemblages in garnet reaction zones. New data acquired using a Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (LA-ICPMS) for minerals in various textural settings indicate differences in the partitioning of trace elements in the transition of the two rock types to garnet granulite, mostly due to the presence or absence of clinozoisite. Garnet in the garnet reaction zone (gabbroic gneiss) has a distinct trace element pattern, inherited from reactant gabbroic gneiss hornblende. Peritectic garnet in the dioritic gneiss and garnet in trondhjemitic veins from the Pembroke Granulite have trace element patterns inherited from the melt-producing reaction in the dioritic gneiss. We present an analysis of kinetics and pulses of zircon growth in migmatites formed at middle to lower crustal depths beneath a volcanic arc. Migmatites in high‐T metamorphic complexes at active continental margins, such as in the Ryoke Complex of southwest Japan, are thought to have been produced beneath volcanic arcs. Thermal models suggest that melt advection supplies the heat to form such high‐T complexes. We found that zircons in the migmatites of the Ryoke Complex grew in multiple discrete stages by rapid diffusion‐controlled growth. The individual growth pulses can be distinguished using a Gaussian mixture model when the duration of each growth pulse is shorter than 1σ of the analytical error of the zircon age dating, and where the interval between each growth pulse is larger than 2σ of them. This method allows extraction of the growth pulses even when the zircon exhibits incomplete textural evidence for multiple stages of growth. Application of the method to the Ryoke Complex revealed three and four pulses of zircon growth with 3–10 Myr intervals for two migmatite samples respectively in the Mikawa area and three pulses with 2–4 Myr intervals from one migmatite sample in the Yanai area. The detected zircon growth pulses are consistent with previously reported pulses of plutonic activity in the two areas, with the exception of the oldest growth pulse in the Mikawa area. Therefore, the growth pulses are interpreted to be the result of thermal pulses because of melt flux events at lower to middle crustal levels. Continental subduction and collision are recorded by ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) terranes; UHP terranes that form at early stages of an orogeny tend to be small and experience short residence at eclogite‐facies depths, whereas terranes that form at mature stages of an orogeny tend to be larger and experience longer residence at these depths, but accurately determining eclogite‐facies residence time requires a large geochronologic dataset tied to metamorphic conditions (via trace elements and/or inclusions). In the Dulan area, North Qaidam UHP terrane, China, it remains unclear whether the terrane experienced a long residence at eclogite‐facies depths, marking the mature stage of an orogeny or two distinct (ultra)high pressure ([U]HP) events (with short residence times), interpreted as the transition from oceanic subduction to continental collision, where one (U)HP event is related to the former and second (U)HP event to the latter. To address this issue, we report new zircon U–Pb ages and trace‐element data from eclogite and host paragneiss from the Dulan area and show that this terrane records ~42 Myr of eclogite‐facies metamorphism at (U)HP conditions, similar to other large UHP terranes. Zircon from 11 eclogite and 2 gneiss samples yields weighted mean ages of 463–425 Ma, flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns without negative Eu anomalies, and eclogitic mineral inclusions, indicating eclogite‐facies conditions. Paragneiss metamorphic ages overlap with ages from eclogite but are generally younger, suggesting that a lack of internally generated fluids may have inhibited zircon growth and/or recrystallization until early decompression and white mica consumption in felsic gneiss generated fluids; thus, we interpret that these felsic rocks record the later stages of continental collision. Dataset patterns from all new and previously published analyses for the Dulan area (34 eclogite and 14 gneiss) suggest that metamorphic zircon in eclogite records prograde, peak and possibly early retrograde conditions, in contrast to the prediction from mass balance models that metamorphic zircon should only grow during exhumation and cooling. We reconcile our observations with these model predictions by recognizing that differential solubility can lead to grain‐scale zircon growth or recrystallization over a large segment of the pressure–temperature (P–T) path even where zircon abundance decreases at the whole‐rock scale. Terranes accreted to the southeastern margin of the Siberian Craton record an important early Paleozoic tectono‐thermal event (known as the Baikal orogenic cycle) in the evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). However, the precise metamorphic conditions and relative timing of this event and its linkage to the wider CAOB remain far poorly constrained. The best exposed of these terranes is the Olkhon Terrane on the western bank of Lake Baikal. Here, late Neoproterozoic through early Paleozoic island arc and back‐arc assemblages were metamorphosed to form a thin granulite facies belt cropping out adjacent to the Siberian Craton and lower temperature/pressure paragneiss and migmatite towards the southeast. Phase equilibria modelling suggests that the granulite facies belt preserved moderate pressure (c. 0.80 GPa) and high temperature (up to 900°C) conditions while the paragneiss and migmatites in the southeast have peak metamorphic conditions around 700–770°C at 0.60–0.80 GPa. New geochronological data (zircon U–Pb in granulite and monazite U–Pb in paragneiss/migmatite) in combination with phase equilibria modelling and petro‐structural analysis suggest that the tectono‐metamorphic evolution of the Olkhon Terrane was controlled by a long‐lasting (535–450 Ma) and pervasive thermal anomaly. Discrete maxima in the zircon and monazite U–Pb ages at c. 535, 500, and 450 Ma are linked to different stages of a semi‐continuous high‐temperature metamorphic evolution. Based on existing geological data of the region, a generalized geodynamic model for the Baikal orogenic cycle involving switching between compressional and extensional regimes during the early Paleozoic accretion of 'exotic' CAOB‐derived material to the southern margin of Siberia is proposed. The tectono‐metamorphic evolution of the Olkhon Terrane may represent a world‐class example of polyphase shortening of a long‐lived hot intra‐continental arc–back‐arc system during its collision with cratonic blocks. The Variscan high‐grade metamorphic basement of northern Sardinia and southern Corsica record lower Carboniferous anatexis related to post‐collisional decompression of the orogen. Migmatites exposed in the Punta Bianca locality (Italy) consist of quartz + biotite + plagioclase + K‐feldspar orthogneisses, garnet and cordierite‐bearing diatexite and metatexites, derived from metasediments. Field evidence, petrographic observations, ELA‐ICP‐MS zircon and monazite dating and pseudosection modelling suggest that anatexis was apparently episodic involving two main stages of partial melting. Using pseudosection modelling, we infer that the first stage of partial melting is in the upper amphibolite facies (~0.45 GPa at ~740°C). Cordierite overgrowths replacing sillimanite, combined with the composition of plagioclase and K‐feldspar, suggest decompression followed cooling below the solidus at low pressures of ~0.3 GPa. The age of the first anatectic event is not precisely constrained because of extensive resetting of the isotopic systems during the second melting stage, yet few zircons preserve a lower Carboniferous age which is consistent with the regional dataset. This lower Carboniferous migmatitic fabric is offset by a network of pseudotachylyte‐bearing faults suggestive of cooling to greenschist facies conditions. Garnet/cordierite‐bearing diatexites incorporate fragments of pseudotachylite‐bearing orthogneiss and metatexites. Pseudosection modelling indicates nearly isobaric re‐heating up to ~750°C, followed by further cooling below the solidus. The inferred P–T path is consistent with decompression and cooling of the Variscan crust through post‐collisional extension and collapse of the thickened orogenic crust, followed by nearly isobaric re‐heating at low pressures (~0.3 GPa) yielding to a second melting stage under LP‐HT conditions. U/Th‐Pb monazite ages for diatexite migmatites indicate an upper bound of 310–316 Ma for the second melting stage, suggesting that the second melting stage is coincident with the regional phase of crustal shearing. The cause of the high geothermal gradient required for re‐heating during the second melting stage is unknown but likely requires some heat source that was probably related to dissipation of mechanical work within crustal‐scale shear zones. According to this interpretation, some upper Carboniferous peraluminous granite precursors of the Corsica–Sardinia Batholith could be the outcome rather than the cause of the late‐Variscan high‐T metamorphism. Primary multiphase fluid inclusions (MFI) were studied in one eclogite and two granulites from the Cabo Ortegal Complex (COC, NW Spain) by means of Raman imaging, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS) and Focused Ion Beam ‐ Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB)‐SEM. Complementary, secondary MFI in pyroxenites from COC were also investigated. MFI hosted in eclogite and granulites occur along growth zones or in 3D clusters in garnet porphyroblasts suggesting a primary origin at high‐pressure (HP) metamorphic conditions. The mineral assemblage of MFI is mainly composed of Fe‐Mg‐Ca‐carbonates and phyllosilicates ± graphite ± quartz ± corundum ± pyrite ± apatite ± rutile and a fluid phase composed of nitrogen ± methane ± carbon‐dioxide. The mineral proportions vary among the lithologies. Dominant carbonates and hydrous silicates are interpreted as step‐daughter minerals (crystals formed in the MFI after entrapment as a result of fluid–host interaction), whereas apatite, quartz and rutile are considered in part as accidentally trapped minerals since they also occur as crystal inclusions together with MFI in each rock type. Quartz and corundum occur together in MFI in ultramafic granulite and are regarded as step‐daughter minerals in this lithology. These observations suggest that the MFI are products of post‐entrapment reactions of a homogeneous COHN fluid system with the host mineral. Thermodynamic calculations in the CaFMAS‐COHN system confirmed that bulk composition of the MFI in eclogite is similar to the host garnet+COHN composition except for a potential lost of H2O. Carbonation and hydration reaction between the host (i.e. garnet or pyroxene) and the fluid inclusion results in the consumption of all CO2 and part of the H2O from the fluid phase producing Ca‐Fe‐Mg‐carbonates and hydrous step‐daughter minerals, mostly pyrophyllite and chlorite. Nitrogen content of the originally trapped COHN fluid in eclogite was estimated to have a maximum value of 10 mol% at peak HP conditions and 30–40 mol% at retrograde conditions that is within the range of the observed MFI in the residual fluid (13–68 mol%). Pseudosection modelling confirmed the stability of the phase assemblage in the MFI in a specific low‐pressure, low‐temperature stability field (between 300°C and 400°C at pressures < 1 GPa), caused by H2O‐ and CO2‐consuming reactions possibly in a single step. Our findings indicate that such processes in the exhuming HP units may play a role in global nitrogen and carbon cycling as well as potentially contributing to nitrogen and methane supply to subsurface–surface environments during devolatilization in the forearc regions of convergent plate margins. Rare earth element (REE) signatures of high‐U/Pb and high‐Th/Pb accessory minerals are typically used to link their ages to specific petrological processes ('petrochronology')—most notably the growth or breakdown of garnet. Although this approach is powerful, gaps in our understandings of REE systematics in high‐grade rocks exist, particularly regarding the degree to which these minerals chemically equilibrate at extreme conditions. To investigate this, we performed comparative chronology and REE analysis of garnet, zircon, and monazite in (1) a fluid‐rich, ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) migmatite from the Western Gneiss Region, Norway, and (2) dry felsic granulite xenoliths from the Pamir, Tajikistan. Zircon and monazite from the hydrous migmatite provided ages of 450–370 Ma and a range of Gd/Yb values across this time span. A Lu‐Hf garnet age of 422 ± 2 Ma coincides with the age at which zircon and monazite exhibit the highest Gd/Yb values, as well as the largest range therein. The degree of dispersion in these values is substantial, especially for monazite. Zircon and monazite in the dry xenoliths provide age clusters between 50 and 11 Ma, recording pulsed growth and recrystallization. The Lu/Hf garnet ages for these samples are 41–38 Ma. The accessory minerals of that age are texturally associated with garnet, yet have the lowest, not the highest, Gd/Yb values. In both cases, there is evidence that co‐genetic garnet and accessory minerals achieved REE equilibrium during growth. However, the age and compositional record of chronometric accessory minerals that were co‐genetic with garnet are distinctly different between the two case examples. In the hydrous migmatite, supply‐limited garnet growth in the presence of fluid phase resulted in strongly zoned garnet and a correspondingly large range in Gd/Yb values among co‐genetic zircon and monazite. The range in Gd/Yb values match among these phases and collectively capture the strong fluctuations in the REE composition of matrix micro‐domains caused by garnet growth. In this case, it is the range in Gd/Yb values, rather than a specific composition that is diagnostic for garnet growth. In the felsic granulites, garnet and accessory minerals growth occurred in a fluid‐limited regime, in which short fluid pulses triggered reactions that had been likely significantly overstepped. The seemingly contradictory pattern of increasing Gd/Yb after garnet growth in these samples is the result of garnet having high Gd/Yb and continued zircon growth forcing further HREE depletion of the matrix with time. The situation that high, rather than low, Gd/Yb values in zircon and monazite indicate equilibrium with garnet may be common in dry granulites and other anhydrous high‐temperature rocks. Our findings provide an improved framework for the reliable identification of the accessory minerals that equilibrated with garnet, even when the REE‐age record of these minerals is complex, dispersed, and seemingly contradictory. In this study, data from garnet‐kyanite metapelites in ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) domains of the Western Gneiss Region (WGR), Norway, are presented. U–Pb geochronology and trace element compositions in zircon, monazite, apatite, rutile and garnet were acquired, and pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions were calculated using mineral equilibria forward modelling and Zr‐in‐rutile thermometry. Garnet‐kyanite gneiss from Ulsteinvik record a prograde evolution passing through ~690–710°C and ~9–11 kbar. Zircon and rutile age and thermometry data indicate these prograde conditions significantly pre‐date Silurian UHP subduction in the WGR and are interpreted to record early Caledonian subduction of continental‐derived allochthons. Minimum peak conditions in the Ulsteinvik metapelite occur at ~28 kbar, constrained by an inferred garnet+kyanite+omphacite+muscovite+rutile+coesite+H2O assemblage. The retrograde evolution passed through ~740°C and ~7 kbar, first recorded by the destruction of omphacite and followed by the partial replacement of kyanite and garnet by cordierite and spinel. Garnet‐kyanite metapelite from the diamond‐bearing Fjørtoft outcrop documents a polymetamorphic history, with garnet forming during the late Mesoproterozoic and limited preservation of high‐pressure Caledonian assemblages. Similar to the Ulsteinvik metapelite, zircon and rutile age data from the Fjørtoft metapelite also record pre‐Scandian Caledonian ages. Two potential tectonic scenarios are possible: (1) The samples were exhumed at different times during pre‐Scandian subduction of the Blåhø nappe, or (2) the samples do not share a history in the same nappe complex, instead the Ulsteinvik metapelite is a constituent of the Seve‐Blåhø Nappe, whilst the Fjørtoft metapelite shares its history within a separate nappe complex. Mafic eclogites are found in many orogens as lenses embedded in quartzofeldspathic migmatites. These high‐pressure relics are interpreted either as remnants of ancient sutures and thus formed during oceanic subduction or as fragments of lower crust exhumed from the root of orogenic thickened crust. It is critical to distinguish between these two endmember scenarios as the resulting palaeogeographic and geodynamic reconstructions may significantly differ. In this contribution, we investigated eclogite relics from Lac Cornu in the Aiguilles‐Rouges massif, one of the External Crystalline Massifs of the Western Alps. Phase equilibrium modelling suggests that these mafic rocks were buried along a prograde path (M1) from ~600°C/1.2 to 1.6 GPa to peak conditions of ~630–775°C and >1.6 GPa. Zircon rims, with a rare earth element signature typical of eclogite facies zircon (no Eu anomalies, flat HREE spectrum), and rutile were dated by U–Th–Pb laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICPMS) at c. 335–330 Ma. Prograde deformation has not been identified in the field and is only recognized thanks to the crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) of inclusions of omphacite and rutile in garnet. Peak pressure conditions were followed by a decompression stage (M2) from ~760°C/1.4 GPa to ~600–650°C/0.9 GPa supported by the breakdown of omphacite into plagioclase–clinopyroxene symplectite and the crystallization of plagioclase–amphibole corona around garnet. The M2 retrogression stage is associated with the development of a main sub‐horizontal planar fabric and the CPO of minerals composing symplectite. This deformation stage is interpreted as the result of horizontal lower crustal flow. The final stage of exhumation (M3) is characterized by the replacement of symplectite and garnet by plagioclase and large euhedral amphibole and by the breakdown of rutile and ilmenite into titanite dated at c. 300 Ma. The CPO of titanite and amphibole are consistent with the development of vertical dextral shear zone in a transpressive regime. The combination of field observations and petrological, microtextural and geochemical analyses suggests that the mafic eclogites preserved in migmatitic rocks of the Aiguilles‐Rouges massif are remnants of a continental lower crust exhumed and juxtaposed with lower‐grade migmatites in crustal‐scale vertical transpressive shear zones. Titanite is a potentially powerful U–Pb petrochronometer that may record metamorphism, metasomatism, and deformation. Titanite may also incorporate significant inherited Pb, which may lead to inaccurate and geologically ambiguous U–Pb dates if a proper correction is not or cannot be applied. Here, we present laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS)‐derived titanite U–Pb dates and trace element concentrations for two banded calcsilicate gneisses from south‐central Maine, USA (SSP18‐1A and SSP18‐1B). Single spot common Pb‐corrected dates range from 400 to 280 Ma with ±12–20 Ma propagated 2SE. Titanite grains in sample SSP18‐1B exhibit regular core‐to‐rim variations in texture, composition, and date. We identify four titanite populations: (1) 397 ± 5 Ma (95% CL) low Y + HREE cores and mottled grains, (2) 370 ± 7 Ma high Y + REE mantles and cores, (3) 342 ± 6 Ma cores with high Y + REE and no Eu anomaly, and (4) 295 ± 6 Ma LREE‐depleted rims. We interpret the increase in titanite Y + HREE between ca. 397 and ca. 370 Ma to constrain the timing of diopside fracturing and recrystallization and amphibole breakdown. Apparent Zr‐in‐titanite temperatures (803 ± 36°C at 0.5 ± 0.2 GPa) and increased XDi suggest a thermal maximum at ca. 370 Ma. Population 3 domains dated to ca. 342 Ma exhibit no Eu anomaly and are observed only in compositional bands dominated by diopside (>80 vol%), suggesting limited equilibrium between titanite and plagioclase. Finally, low LREE and high U/Th in Population 4 titanite dates the formation of hydrous phases, such as allanite, during high XH2O fluid infiltration at ca. 295 Ma. In contrast to the well‐defined date–composition–texture relationships observed for titanite from SSP18‐1B, titanite grains from sample SSP18‐1A exhibit complex zoning patterns and little correlation between texture, composition, and date. We hypothesize that the incorporation of variable amounts of radiogenic Pb from dissolved titanite into recrystallized domains resulted in mixed dates spanning 380–330 Ma. Although titanite may reliably record multiple phases of metamorphism, these data highlight the importance of considering U–Pb data along with chemical and textural data to screen for inherited radiogenic Pb. Deciphering the pre‐orogenic evolution of subducted continental basement is challenging due to pervasive reworking of crust during subduction and exhumation. Survival of such polycyclic basement may occur locally in low strain domains bounded by intensely overprinted rocks. The Palaeozoic history of basement involved in Alpine continental subduction is investigated in the northern Dora‐Maira Massif where a kilometre‐scale domain of low strain preserves a pre‐Alpine amphibolite‐facies foliation in garnet‐biotite orthogneiss and garnet‐staurolite micaschist. By contrast, a first generation garnet is the only pre‐Alpine relict in pervasively reworked domains surrounding the low‐strain domain. Thermodynamic modelling based on garnet isopleths in micaschist constrains the pre‐Alpine pressure–temperature (P–T) evolution from 4 to 5 kbar and ~500°C to 6–7 kbar and ~650°C, which is consistent with Barrovian metamorphism up to the staurolite zone. In this micaschist, monazite included in garnet rims provide an age of 324 ± 6 Ma (95% confidence interval; c.i.). On the basis of textural and chemical data, this is interpreted as recording peak Barrovian metamorphic conditions. Low Th/U metamorphic zircon overgrowths and crystals yield an age of 304 ± 2 Ma (95% confidence interval). On the basis of the trace element concentrations and rare earth element (REE) patterns measured in garnet and metamorphic zircon, the latter is tentatively interpreted as having grown during early exhumation or cooling, involving garnet consumption and fluid infiltration. The reconstructed Variscan Barrovian metamorphism of the northern Dora‐Maira basement is consistent with that documented in the External Crystalline Massifs and in the Austroalpine domain of the Alps. The Palaeozoic basement of the Dora‐Maira Massif likely represents upper crustal material, later involved in Alpine continental subduction under high‐ to ultra‐high‐pressure conditions. Major and trace elements in omphacite, including hydrogen, were determined in eclogites from two Variscan basement complexes in Germany: Erzgebirge (EG) and Fichtelgebirge (FG). Erzgebirge eclogite is derived from three units, showing different peak pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions (Unit 1: 840–920°C/≥30 kbar, Unit 2: 670–730°C/24–26 kbar, Unit 3: 600–650°C/20–22 kbar). The peak conditions of FG eclogite (690–750°C/25–28 kbar) resemble those of EG Unit 2. Coesite eclogite occurs in EG Unit 1, and quartz eclogite in all other units. Omphacite from all samples shows four infrared (IR) absorption bands. Two prominent, sharp bands occur at 3,455 ± 10 cm−1 (band II) and 3,522 ± 10 cm−1 (band III). Band II is usually more prominent than band III, except for few samples with low jadeite content. A further, broad band is centred between 3,270 and 3,370 cm−1 (band I) and a fourth, minor band at 3,611–3,635 cm−1 (band IV). Bands II and III are due to hydrogen bound as structural OH− ions in omphacite. In most cases, this also applies to band IV. However, some spectra with extremely large type IV bands reflect phengite inclusions. The ambiguous band I may be due to different H2O species (molecular water, structural OH, and water in phengite). Omphacite of quartz eclogite has lower contents of TiO2, Zr, Hf, and REE, compared with that from coesite eclogite. By contrast, omphacite in quartz eclogite from both EG (H2O sample averages: 465–852 ppm) and FG (546–1,089 ppm) contains the same amount of structural OH (concentrations given in wt.‐ppm H2O) as omphacite in coesite eclogite (492–1,140 ppm). The obtained difference in the garnet‐omphacite H2O partition coefficient between quartz (0.01–0.03) and coesite eclogite (0.08–0.11) results from different H2O contents in garnet (coesite eclogite: 50–150 ppm; quartz eclogite: <2–50 ppm; Gose & Schmädicke, 2018). The total content of structural OH in omphacite is unrelated to its major and trace element composition. However, treating the individual IR bands separately, a relation between OH and mineral composition is observed. The OH amount defined by band II is positively correlated to Ti and tetrahedral Al, and that of band III shows a positive correlation with Ca and a negative one with Na (and jadeite). Both the total OH content of omphacite and the partial contents deduced from individual IR bands are unrelated to PT conditions. This implies that omphacite incorporated its structural H2O mainly in the quartz stability field, presumably during initial omphacite growth. Conversely, most OH in garnet was derived from the final breakdown of the last remaining calcic amphibole close to or within the coesite stability field. Our data suggest that coesite eclogite is able to transport a significant amount of H2O (average 550 ppm, maximum 730 ppm), corresponding to that in 3–4 vol.% calcic amphibole, via subduction to depths beyond 100 km. However, the majority of water liberated by dehydration reactions during subduction, including the breakdown of 5–10 vol.% eclogite facies and >10 vol.% pre‐eclogitic hydrous minerals, is not preserved in eclogite but liberated to the mantle wedge. This work reports on the first identification of sapphirine‐bearing ultrahigh‐temperature (UHT) metamorphic rocks within the Borborema Province, in NE Brazil. The investigated UHT diatexites outcrop in the Arapiraca Complex, a high‐grade Palaeoproterozoic block embedded within the Neoproterozoic metavolcano‐sedimentary sequence of the Sergipano fold‐and‐thrust belt. A sapphirine‐bearing diatexite sample preserves two distinct residual mineral associations as inclusions in cordierite poikiloblasts: a volumetrically dominant silica‐saturated, garnet–sillimanite–orthopyroxene–quartz domain, and a restricted silica‐undersaturated, sapphirine–magnetite–spinel–corundum domain. Phase equilibrium modelling for the whole‐rock bulk composition constrains the reactions preserved in the silica‐saturated domain, which, coupled with reintegrated ternary feldspar thermometry and Al‐in‐orthopyroxene thermobarometry, indicates peak UHT metamorphism occurring at ~970°C/8.5 kbar followed by a clockwise near isobaric cooling stage crossing the H2O‐undersaturated solidus at ~910°C/7.7 kbar. The T–MSiO2 and P–T phase equilibrium models reveal that the stabilization of magnetite‐spinel in the silica‐undersaturated domain can be a product of domanial SiO2‐depletion ascribed to inherited compositional banding and progressive melt‐loss episodes. The appearance of sapphirine as thin coronae around previously formed magnetite‐spinel cores requires an increase in the bulk silica content during retrograde metamorphism. This was driven by variable degrees of chemical interaction between the silica‐undersaturated domain and trapped silica‐rich leucosomes. U–Pb dating of zircon coupled with trace element behaviour records the timing of melt crystallization between ca. 2.03 and 1.96 Ga, after peak UHT metamorphism and supporting a protracted, ca. 70 My period of melt presence in the crust. The UHT metamorphism in the Arapiraca Complex is related to a contemporaneous UHT event recorded within the São Francisco Craton and more broadly coincides with high geothermal gradients at ca. 2.0 Ga linked to the formation of the Columbia supercontinent. The integration of new petrological and geochronological data indicates that the Arapiraca Complex is a continental ribbon pulled away from the São Francisco–Congo palaeocontinent possibly during the early Neoproterozoic intermittent rifting events and opening of the Sergipano oceanic basin between ca. 0.98–0.74 Ga. During the late Neoproterozoic at ca. 0.63–0.57 Ga, the Arapiraca Complex continental ribbon was thrusted back onto the northern margin of the São Francisco Craton as an inlier of the Sergipano fold‐and‐thrust belt. Eclogites hosted in sillimanite‐bearing migmatites in the Montagne Noire dome (French Massif Central) have an oceanic protolith and recorded a prograde P–T path from ~19.5 kbar, 700°C to the pressure peak at ~21 kbar, 750°C (pseudosection modelling), suggesting metamorphism in a subduction setting. Subsequent exhumation to low‐P high‐T (LP–HT) conditions (~6 kbar, 730°C) is constrained by the equilibration conditions of the embedding migmatite. In samples of a fresh and a retrogressed eclogite, all zircon crystals but one display similar REE patterns (no Eu anomaly, flat HREE), usually ascribed to crystallization under eclogite‐facies conditions. Yet, the U–Pb apparent ages of zircon crystals from both eclogites spread from c. 360 Ma to a dominant data cluster at c. 315 Ma. The c. 315–310 Ma zircon U–Pb dates obtained from the embedding migmatite are interpreted as the age of crystallization of the partial melt during the LP–HT metamorphic stage. First‐order geological evidence, in particular the sedimentary record, excludes the existence of a subduction zone in the region at this period. Unless calling upon a major reappraisal of the tectonics of the European Variscan orogen, this suggests an ambiguous relation between REE patterns and U–Pb dates in the zircon population. Various scenarios that could account for the observations are discussed. Combining our data with the results of a previously published Sm–Nd dating of garnet, and regional considerations, we consider that 360 Ma is the best approximation of the minimum age of the eclogite‐facies event. We hypothesize that the eclogites formed farther north and were transferred to their present location by lower‐crustal flow. It is inferred that during the subsequent exhumation, eclogite‐facies zircon grains recrystallized and underwent partial to total resetting of their U–Pb system, whereas the REE system remained mostly unmodified. These results caution against the use of REE patterns as the only criterion to associate a specific zircon age with HP metamorphism in eclogites occurring in migmatitic domes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study we establish a time frame for metamorphic processes affecting Neotethyan suture zones at the northern (Sabzevar) and southern (Makran) margin of the Central Iranian Microcontinent. For this purpose, we have applied Rb–Sr and U–Pb geochronology to blueschist‐ and amphibolite facies rocks from these occurrences. So far, no isotopic ages are available for high‐P/low‐T rocks from the Sabzevar area which are exposed in the Govain and Chili mountains near Soltanabad. Three newly dated blueschists from the Govain mountain yielded Rb–Sr ages of 56.52 ± 0.32, 57.20 ± 0.32, and 55.12 ± 0.33 Ma respectively. These ages provide the first unambiguous evidence for late Palaeocene to early Eocene high‐P metamorphism in the Sabzevar zone and confirm the accuracy of earlier age assignments that were derived indirectly. The clearly confirmed age difference between late Palaeocene–early Eocene blueschists of the Govain mountain and kilometre‐scale dismembered HP granulites with Early Cretaceous (Albian) metamorphic ages from outcrops c. 60 km to the west of Soltanabad further corroborates interpretations that these rocks are not related to the same subduction zone complex. The blueschists record closure of an Albian to Late Cretaceous back‐arc basin, whereas the granulites formed due to subduction of older oceanic lithosphere. Uranium–Pb zircon dating of an amphibolite from the Iranshahr region in the Makran Zone yielded an intercept age of 87.8 ± 1.8 Ma and weighted mean age of 88.1 ± 1.7 Ma. Rb–Sr mineral isochrons for seven blueschist‐ and amphibolite facies samples from the same area generated very consistent ages of c. 84 Ma (± <1–3 Ma), regardless of metamorphic grade. The apparent contradiction that rocks recording different P–T conditions have identical metamorphic ages either indicates tectonic mixing of rocks during exhumation that originally had formed at the same time at different depths of the subduction system, or very rapid exhumation so that differences in closure temperatures became indistinguishable. The new data are similar, but much more precise, than previously reported K–Ar ages and suggest that most of the existing data had not been significantly compromised by contamination with extraneous Ar. Potassium–Ar indications for older blueschist‐ and/or amphibolite facies metamorphism (>85 Ma) have not yet been confirmed but can be reconciled with the larger geological frame implying that northward subduction of the Arabian plate beneath the Bajgan–Durkan continental block started shortly after c. 120 Ma. In the Variscides of central Europe, the tectonothermal history of a few units jointly assigned to the Teplá‐Barrandian/Bohemian microplate had already terminated in the Devonian. One of these is the Góry Sowie Massif (GSM; Sudetes, SW Poland), mainly consisting of variably migmatitic gneisses with subordinate granulite and peridotite inserts. The eo‐Variscan evolution of the GSM was completed in five tectonothermal stages; however, the timing and pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions of the individual stages remain unclear because isotopic ages overlap within error, and previous P–T estimates have been determined without reference to these ages. Our thermodynamic modelling and LA–ICP–MS U–Pb and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) U–Th–total Pb monazite geochronology provide new insights into the early Variscan multistage evolution of the GSM. The new P–T–time (t) data show that granulites were metamorphosed concurrently with gneisses but at different depths and temperatures. During subduction of Saxothuringia beneath Teplá‐Barrandia at 395–390 Ma, the granulites of crustal provenance experienced high‐P–high‐T conditions (740–750°C, 17–18 kbar) and came in contact with the overlying mantle. Slab break‐off gave rise to decompression from conditions of ~17 kbar/840°C to 11–12 kbar/850–860°C, which continued at 380–370 Ma when the granulites were sheared off and extruded as tectonic slices to lower–middle crustal depths, where gneisses were undergoing metamorphism and migmatization under amphibolite facies conditions. In the gneisses, the oldest monazite date of c. 390 Ma constrains the age of the early tectonometamorphic event D1. Two subsequent events (D2 and D3, sillimanite grade) occurred under conditions of 660–680°C and 5–9 kbar at 380–375 Ma, when, in various parts of the future massif, the gneisses were (re)folded and migmatized due to heat arising from underplated mantle. Isostatic exhumation was accompanied by pegmatite intrusions (D4) at 370 Ma and subsequent orogenic collapse (D5). The physical and mechanical processes rooted in the hydrated, serpentinized mantle above subduction zones remain insufficiently explored despite fundamental implications for our understanding of rheology and fluid recycling along subduction interfaces. Through a field‐based investigation, serpentinized peridotites and jadeitite samples from a fossil forearc mantle in the Polar Urals (Russia) are studied here to document fluid–rock interaction processes in the high‐P field, as well as the long‐term evolution of the base of the mantle wedge. Petrographic, geochemical and microstructural observations reveal a complex, protracted evolution of the jadeitite‐forming fluid pathway throughout the gradual cooling of the forearc mantle and increasing serpentinization of the host. It is shown that the jadeitite lenses in the studied locality (a) derive for a large part from a trondhjemitic dyke earlier emplaced in a warm subduction environment, and (b) record the cooling of the subduction hangingwall under high‐P conditions associated with increasing host serpentinization. In the studied locality, the majority of the jadeitites formed at relatively high temperatures (>600°C) by the influx of Na–Al‐rich, slab‐derived metamorphic fluids that were drained along the base of the mantle wedge, parallel to the subduction interface. Changes in bulk‐rock geochemical signatures and in paragenetic sequences also constrain the compositional evolution of the fluid channelized along this drainage, with an increasing sedimentary component. The phlogopite‐bearing walls of the dyke exhibit Rb–Sr and Ar–Ar ages ranging between c. 405 and c. 390 Ma, a range partly overlapping within uncertainty with the previously dated zircons from the jadeitite core (410–⁠400 Ma; U–Pb). This study opens a unique window on the pristine structures formed above the plate interface by melting and fluid–rock interaction in the early subduction stages, as well as their evolution during secular cooling of the base of the mantle wedge. Low pressure‐high temperature (LPHT) metamorphism, with geothermal gradients in the order of 50–100°C/km, is a common feature of the late evolution of collisional orogens. These abnormal thermal conditions may be the results of complex interactions between magmatism, metamorphism and deformation. The Agly massif, in the French Pyrenees, preserves the metamorphic footprints of the late Variscan thermal structure of an almost continuous section from the upper and middle continental crust. The upper crust is characterized by a very high geothermal gradient of ~55°C/km, evolving from greenschist to amphibolite facies, while the middle crust, exposed in a gneissic core, exhibits granulite facies conditions with a near isothermal geothermal gradient (<8°C/km) between 740 and 790°C. The abnormal and discontinuous crustal geothermal gradient, dated at c. 305 Ma on syn‐granulitic monazite by LA‐ICP‐MS, is interpreted to be the result of magmatic intrusions at different structural levels in the crust: the Ansignan charnockite (c. 305 Ma) in the deepest part of the gneissic core, the Tournefort granodiorite (c. 308 Ma) at the interface between the gneissic core and the upper crust and the Saint‐Arnac granite (c. 304 Ma) in the upper section of the massif. The heat input from these magmas combined with the thermal buffering effect of the biotite dehydration‐melting reaction resulted in the near isothermal geothermal gradient in the gneissic core (melt‐enhanced geotherm). The higher geothermal gradient (>50°C/km) in the upper crust is only due to conduction between the hot middle crust and the Earth's surface. The estimated maximum finite pressure range suggests that ~10 to 12 km of crust are exposed in the Agly massif while the present‐day thickness does not exceed 5–6 km. This pressure/depth gap is consistent with the presence of several normal mylonitic shear zones that could have contributed to the subtraction of ~5 km of the rock pile. Monazite U–Th–Pb ages carried out on monazite overgrowths from a highly mylonitized sample suggest that this vertical thinning of the massif occurred at c. 296–300 Ma. This later Variscan extension might have slightly perturbed the 305 Ma geothermal gradient, resulting in an apparent higher conductive geothermal gradient in the upper crust. Although the Agly massif has been affected by Cretaceous extension and Eocene Alpine compression, we suggest that most of the present‐day thickness of the column rock was acquired by the end of the Palaeozoic. The Upper Units of the allochthonous complexes of the NW Iberian Massif constitute a terrane with continental affinity. They represent the vestiges of a Cambrian magmatic arc developed in the periphery of Gondwana (West African Craton) which was involved in the Devonian Variscan collision, undergoing high‐P, high‐T metamorphism. This includes ultramafic rocks, high‐P mafic rocks (eclogites and granulites) and high‐P migmatitic paragneisses. The latter rocks show an extensive migmatization with the leucosomes oriented parallel to the regional foliation. The migmatitic paragneisses are composed of garnet, kyanite, biotite, quartz, plagioclase, K‐feldspar, rutile and Ti‐hematite. Thermodynamic modelling using the measured bulk composition in the NCKFMASTHO system indicates metamorphic peak conditions of ~15 kbar and ~800 to 835°C, followed by a significant cooling. The prograde evolution is assessed by means of a melt‐reintegration approach, using the composition of the garnet and its inclusions. An appropriate composition of liquid is added to the measured bulk composition to emulate the pre‐melting bulk composition. Modelling of this melt‐reintegrated composition allows to identify a colder high‐P episode below ~500°C. Zircon crystals extracted from the leucosomes show overgrowths crystallized from the partial melt at c. 389 Ma (U–Pb system). The P–T–t path proposed reveals a subduction of the peri‐Gondwanan arc‐derived section down to mantle depths. An isobaric heating stage occurred as a result of residence at great depths and/or inception of a transient oceanic basin at c. 395 Ma. The ensuing near‐isothermal exhumation occurred due to the extension related to the inception of the basin, reaching the thermal peak shortly before c. 389 Ma. In orogens worldwide and throughout geologic time, large volumes of deep continental crust have been exhumed in domal structures. Extension‐driven ascent of bodies of deep, hot crust is a very efficient mechanism for rapid heat and mass transfer from deep to shallow crustal levels and is therefore an important mechanism in the evolution of continents. The dominant rock type in exhumed domes is quartzofeldspathic gneiss (typically migmatitic) that does not record its former high‐pressure (HP) conditions in its equilibrium mineral assemblage; rather, it records the conditions of emplacement and cooling in the mid/shallow crust. Mafic rocks included in gneiss may, however, contain a fragmentary record of a HP history, and are evidence that their host rocks were also deeply sourced. An excellent example of exhumed deep crust that retains a partial HP record is in the Montagne Noire dome, French Massif Central, which contains well‐preserved eclogite (garnet+omphacite+rutile+quartz) in migmatite in two locations: one in the dome core and the other at the dome margin. Both eclogites record P ~ 1.5 ± 0.2 GPa at T ~ 700 ± 20°C, but differ from each other in whole‐rock and mineral composition, deformation features (shape and crystallographic preferred orientation, CPO), extent of record of prograde metamorphism in garnet and zircon, and degree of preservation of inherited zircon. Rim ages of zircon in both eclogites overlap with the oldest crystallization ages of host gneiss at c. 310 Ma, interpreted based on zircon rare earth element abundance in eclogite zircon as the age of HP metamorphism. Dome‐margin eclogite zircon retains a widespread record of protolith age (c. 470–450 Ma, the same as host gneiss protolith age), whereas dome‐core eclogite zircon has more scarce preservation of inherited zircon. Possible explanations for differences in the two eclogites relate to differences in the protolith mafic magma composition and history and/or the duration of metamorphic heating and extent of interaction with aqueous fluid, affecting zircon crystallization. Differences in HP deformation fabrics may relate to the position of the eclogite facies rocks relative to zones of transpression and transtension at an early stage of dome development. Regardless of differences, both eclogites experienced HP metamorphism and deformation in the deep crust at c. 310 Ma and were exhumed by lithospheric extension—with their host migmatite—near the end of the Variscan orogeny. The deep crust in this region was rapidly exhumed from ~50 to <10 km, where it equilibrated under low‐P/high‐T conditions, leaving a sparse but compelling record of the deep origin of most of the crust now exposed in the dome. Partial melting of ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks is common during collisional orogenesis and post‐collisional reworking, indicating that determining the timing and processes involved in this partial melting can provide insights into the tectonic evolution of collisional orogens. This study presents the results of a combined whole‐rock geochemical and zirconological study of migmatites from the Sulu orogen in eastern China. These data provide evidence of multiple episodes of crustal anatexis and geochemical differentiation within the UHP metamorphic rocks. The leucosomes contain higher concentrations of Ba and K and lower concentrations of the rare earth elements (REE), Th and Y, than associated melanosomes and granitic gneisses. The leucosomes also have homogenous Sr–Nd–O isotopic compositions that are similar to proximal (i.e. within the same outcrop) melanosomes, suggesting that the anatectic melts were generated by the partial melting of source rocks that are located within individual outcrops. The migmatites contain zircons with six different types of domains that can be categorized using differences in structures, trace element compositions, and U–Pb ages. Group I domains are relict magmatic zircons that yield middle Neoproterozoic U–Pb ages and contain high REE concentrations. Group II domains represent newly grown metamorphic zircons that formed at 230 ± 1 Ma during the collisional orogenesis. Groups III, IV, V, and VI zircons are newly grown anatectic zircons that formed at 222 ± 2 Ma, 215 ± 1 Ma, 177 ± 2 Ma, and 152 ± 2 Ma, respectively. The metamorphic zircons have higher Th/U and lower (Yb/Gd)N values, flat heavy REE (HREE) patterns with no significantly negative Eu anomalies relative to the anatectic zircons, which are characterized by low Th/U ratios, steep HREE patterns, and negative Eu anomalies. The first two episodes of crustal anatexis occurred during the Late Triassic at c. 222 Ma and c. 215 Ma as a result of phengite breakdown. The other two episodes of anatexis occurred during the Jurassic period at c. 177 Ma and c. 152 Ma and were associated with extensional collapse of the collision‐thickened orogen. The majority of Triassic anatectic zircons and all of the Jurassic zircons are located within the leucosomes, whereas the melanosomes are dominated by Triassic metamorphic zircons, suggesting that the leucosomes within the migmatites record more episodes of crustal anatexis. Both metamorphic and anatectic zircons have elevated εHf(t) values compared with relict magmatic zircon cores, suggesting that these zircons contain non‐zircon Hf derived from material with more radiogenic Hf isotope compositions. The Breaksea Orthogneiss in Fiordland, New Zealand preserves water‐poor intermediate and mafic igneous rocks that were partially recrystallized to omphacite granulite and eclogite, respectively, at P ≈ 1.8 GPa and T ≈ 850°C. Metamorphic reaction consumed plagioclase and produced grossular‐rich garnet, jadeite‐rich omphacite, clinozoisite and kyanite. The extent of metamorphic reaction, identified by major and trace element composition and microstructural features, is patchy on the grain and outcrop scale. Domains of re‐equilibration coincide with areas that exhibit higher strain suggesting a causal link between crystal plastic strain and metamorphic reaction. Quantitative orientation analysis (EBSD) identifies gradual and stepped changes in crystal lattice orientations of igneous phenocrysts that are surrounded by homophase areas of neoblasts, characterized by high grain boundary to volume ratios and little to no internal lattice distortion. The narrow, peripheral compositional modification of less deformed garnet and omphacite phenocrysts reflects limited lattice diffusion in areas that lacked three‐dimensional networks of interconnected low‐angle boundaries. Low‐angle boundaries acted as elemental pathways (pipe diffusion) that enhanced in‐grain element diffusion. The scale of pipe diffusion is pronounced in garnet relatively to clinopyroxene. A highly residual granulite facies rock (sample RG07‐21) from Lunnyj Island in the Rauer Group, East Antarctica, presents an opportunity to compare different approaches to constraining peak temperature in high‐grade metamorphic rocks. Sample RG07‐21 is a coarse‐grained pelitic migmatite composed of abundant garnet and orthopyroxene along with quartz, biotite, cordierite, and plagioclase with accessory rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite. The inferred sequence of mineral growth is consistent with a clockwise pressure–temperature (P–T) evolution when compared with a forward model (P–T pseudosection) for the whole‐rock chemical composition. Peak metamorphic conditions are estimated at 9 ± 0.5 kbar and 910 ± 50°C based on conventional Al‐in‐orthopyroxene thermobarometry, Zr‐in‐rutile thermometry, and calculated compositional isopleths. U–Pb ages from zircon rims and neocrystallized monazite grains yield ages of c. 514 Ma, suggesting that crystallization of both minerals occurred towards the end of the youngest pervasive metamorphic episode in the region known as the Prydz Tectonic Event. The rare earth element compositions of zircon and garnet are consistent with equilibrium growth of these minerals in the presence of melt. When comparing the thermometry methods used in this study, it is apparent that the Al‐in‐orthopyroxene thermobarometer provides the most reliable estimate of peak conditions. There is a strong textural correlation between the temperatures obtained using the Zr‐in‐rutile thermometer––maximum temperatures are recorded by a single rutile grain included within orthopyroxene, whereas other grains included in garnet, orthopyroxene, quartz, and biotite yield a range of temperatures down to 820°C. Ti‐in‐zircon thermometry returns significantly lower temperature estimates of 678–841°C. Estimates at the upper end of this range are consistent with growth of zircon from crystallizing melt at temperatures close to the elevated (H2O undersaturated) solidus. Those estimates, significantly lower than the calculated temperature of this residual solidus, may reflect isolation of rutile from the effective equilibration volume leading to an activity of TiO2 that is lower than the assumed value of unity. The Changning–Menglian orogenic belt (CMOB) in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, is considered as the main suture zone marking the closure of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean between the Indochina and Sibumasu blocks. Here, we investigate the recently discovered retrograded eclogites from this suture zone in terms of their petrological, geochemical and geochronological features, with the aim of constraining the metamorphic evolution and protolith signature. Two types of metabasites are identified: retrograded eclogites and mafic schists. The igneous precursors of the retrograded eclogites exhibit rare earth element distribution patterns and trace element abundance similar to those of ocean island basalts, and are inferred to have been derived from a basaltic seamount in an intra‐oceanic tectonic setting. In contrast, the mafic schists show geochemical affinity to arc‐related volcanics with the enrichment of Rb, Th and U, and depletion of Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf and Ti, and their protoliths possibly formed at an active continental margin tectonic setting. Retrograded eclogites are characterized by peak metamorphic mineral assemblages of garnet, omphacite, white mica, lawsonite and rutile, and underwent five‐stage metamorphic evolution, including pre‐peak prograde stage (M1) at 18–19 kbar and 400–420°C, peak lawsonite‐eclogite facies (M2) at 24–26 kbar and 520–530°C, post‐peak epidote–eclogite facies decompression stage (M3) at 13–18 kbar and 530–560°C, subsequent amphibolite facies retrogressive stage (M4) at 8–10 kbar and 530–600°C, and late greenschist facies cooling stage (M5) at 5–8 kbar and 480–490°C. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) U–Pb spot analyses of zircon show two distinct age groups. The magmatic zircon from both the retrograded eclogite and mafic schist yielded protolith ages of 451 ± 3 Ma, which is consistent with the ages of Early Palaeozoic ophiolitic complexes and ocean island sequences in the CMOB reported in previous studies. In contrast, metamorphic zircon from the retrograded eclogite samples yielded consistent Triassic metamorphic ages of 246 ± 2 and 245 ± 2 Ma, which can be interpreted as the timing of closure of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean. The compatible peak metamorphic mineral assemblages, P–T–t paths and metamorphic ages, as well as the similar protolith signatures for the eclogites in the CMOB and Longmu Co–Shuanghu suture (LCSS) suggest that the two belts formed part of a cold oceanic subduction system in the Triassic. The main suture zone of the Palaeo‐Tethyan domain extends at least 1,500 km in length from the CMOB to the LCSS in the Tibetan Plateau. The identification of lawsonite‐bearing retrograded eclogites in the CMOB provides important insights into the tectonic framework and complex geological evolution of the Palaeo‐Tethys. The Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ) is a Proterozoic suture along which the Northern and Southern Indian Blocks are inferred to have amalgamated forming the Greater Indian Landmass. In this study, we use the metamorphic and geochronological evolution of the Gangpur Schist Belt (GSB) and neighbouring crustal units to constrain crustal accretion processes associated with the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Indian Blocks. The GSB sandwiched between the Bonai Granite pluton of the Singhbhum craton and granite gneisses of the Chhotanagpur Gneiss Complex (CGC) links the CITZ and the North Singhbhum Mobile Belt. New zircon age data constrain the emplacement of the Bonai Granite at 3,370 ± 10 Ma, while the magmatic protoliths of the Chhotanagpur gneisses were emplaced at c. 1.65 Ga. The sediments in the southern part of the Gangpur basin were derived from the Singhbhum craton, whereas those in the northern part were derived dominantly from the CGC. Sedimentation is estimated to have taken place between c. 1.65 and c. 1.45 Ga. The Upper Bonai/Darjing Group rocks of the basin underwent major metamorphic episodes at c. 1.56 and c. 1.45 Ga, while the Gangpur Group of rocks were metamorphosed at c. 1.45 and c. 0.97 Ga. Based on thermobarometric studies and zircon–monazite geochronology, we infer that the geological history of the GSB is similar to that of the North Singhbhum Mobile Belt with the Upper Bonai/Darjing and the Gangpur Groups being the westward extensions of the southern and northern domains of the North Singhbhum Mobile Belt respectively. We propose a three‐stage model of crustal accretion across the Singhbhum craton—GSB/North Singhbhum Mobile Belt—CGC contact. The magmatic protoliths of the Chhotanagpur Gneisses were emplaced at c. 1.65 Ga in an arc setting. The earliest accretion event at c. 1.56 Ga involved northward subduction and amalgamation of the Upper Bonai Group with the Singhbhum craton followed by accretion of the Gangpur Group with the Singhbhum craton–Upper Bonai Group composite at c. 1.45 Ga. Finally, continent–continent collision at c. 0.96 Ga led to the accretion of the CGC with the Singhbhum craton–Upper Bonai Group–Gangpur Group crustal units, synchronous with emplacement of pegmatitic granites. The geological events recorded in the GSB and other units of the CITZ only partially overlap with those in the Trans North China Orogen and the Capricorn Orogen of Western Australia, indicating that these suture zones are not correlatable. The Napier Complex in East Antarctica preserves a record of ultrahigh temperature (UHT) metamorphism during the late Archean to early Palaeoproterozoic. While there is little argument that the UHT metamorphic event began at c. 2,580 Ma, the duration over which the rocks resided at UHT has been the subject of intense debate, with estimates for the end of metamorphism ranging from 2,545 to 2,440 Ma—a discrepancy of some 105 Ma. To resolve the time‐scale of UHT metamorphism, a zircon and garnet petrochronological (U–Pb, REE and Ti) data set from a suite of rocks from the Tula Mountains region of the Napier Complex was analysed. Individual concordant populations define zircon U–Pb ages for (a) reset zircon cores of 2,502–2,439 Ma; (b) zircon rims of 2,491–2,454 Ma; and (c) neocrystallized sector‐zoned zircon from 2,492 to 2,443 Ma. Ti‐in‐zircon thermometry places a minimum estimate of 830°C for zircon crystallization, with the majority of concordant populations yielding temperatures >900°C. Zircon–garnet partitioning (DYb vs. DYb/Gd) arrays reveal that the bulk of metamorphic zircon defines an equilibrium relationship with the garnet that forms part of the peak assemblage. Combined with existing geochronological constraints, the new petrochronological data demonstrate that the Napier Complex remained at UHT from c. 2,585 Ma until at least 2,450 Ma, a residence time of 135 Ma. In the absence of evidence for contemporaneous emplacement of large volumes of igneous rocks, a number of factors likely combined to drive and maintain these extreme temperatures. We propose that the P–T conditions experienced by the Napier Complex were achieved through a combination of orogenic plateau formation, preconditioning of the crust by a high‐T magmatic and UHT metamorphic event at c. 2,850 Ma, inefficient removal of heat‐producing elements during partial melting and slow exhumation. This style of long duration, regional, extreme metamorphism is becoming more commonly identified in the rock record as larger and more robust data sets are collected (e.g. the Eastern Ghats of India and the Gondwanan East African Orogen) and is commonly associated with the amalgamation phases of supercontinents/cratons. In the Bandelierkop Quarry (South Marginal Zone of the Limpopo belt), two generations of leucosome contain peritectic garnet produced by incongruent melting of biotite‐bearing assemblages, either in the presence or absence of sillimanite, respectively. This study focuses on mineral inclusions in large garnet crystals from both leucosome generations, which, in rare cases, host an abundance of euhedral plagioclase inclusions with variable compositions. Plagioclase in the residuum adjacent to the leucosomes ranges from An32 to An39, while the euhedral plagioclase inclusions are considerably more calcic with compositions that range from An50 to An83. These grains are also significantly zoned, with inclusions displaying both Na‐ and Ca‐enriched rims. Garnet zoning directly adjacent to the inclusions demonstrates that the Ca‐rich nature of the inclusions is not a consequence of Ca‐uptake from garnet. The euhedral plagioclase inclusions are interpreted to reflect disequilibrium during anatexis due to slow diffusion in plagioclase. Thus, the kinetic pathway followed by the incongruent melting reaction appears to be one where only the outer portions of the reactant plagioclase grains were involved, via dissolution, not diffusion, and with the precipitation of new Ca‐rich peritectic plagioclase as a consequence. This is predictable, as the coupled substitutions involved in plagioclase solid solution result in very slow intracrystalline diffusion of the major elements, while plagioclase dissolution in granitic melt is faster by several orders of magnitude. Phase equilibrium modelling demonstrates that the Ca‐content of the peritectic plagioclase is inversely proportional to the amount of plagioclase that participates in the fluid‐absent incongruent melting reaction in biotite‐bearing metapelites, with the specific compositions of the peritectic grains, reflecting local variations in effective bulk composition as the melting reaction progressed. The variation in composition and zoning patterns within plagioclase inclusions from individual garnet grains is interpreted to reflect melt segregation and flow simultaneously with garnet growth, allowing individual garnet grains to trap euhedral peritectic plagioclase grains that had formed within a range of effective bulk compositions. The preservation of this unusual garnet, which was most likely due to rapid and efficient melt loss from the residual source, as well as rapid cooling, provides a rare insight into the details of the anatectic process. Abstract: Petrological modelling of granulite‐facies mafic and semipelitic migmatites from Cairn Leuchan, northeast Scotland, has provided new constraints on the pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions of high‐grade metamorphism in the type‐locality Barrow zones. Phase diagrams constructed in the Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–O2 system have constrained the P−T conditions of peak metamorphism in the Glen Muick region of the upper sillimanite zone (Sill+Kfs) to have been at least ∼840°C at ∼9 kbar (high‐P granulite facies). These conditions are ∼120°C and ∼3 kbar higher than those recorded by lower sillimanite zone (Sill+Ms) units located only a few kilometres away to the southeast at Glen Girnock, indicating the presence of a significant thermal and barometric high exposed within the Scottish Dalradian, and supporting previous suppositions of a potential tectonic break between the two regions. U–Pb zircon geochronology performed on these mafic migmatites produced ages of c. 540–470 Ma from grains with both igneous and metamorphic morphological characteristics. Their basaltic protoliths likely formed during a period of volcanism dated at c. 570 Ma, associated with passive‐margin extension prior to the onset of Iapetus Ocean closure, and high‐grade metamorphism and partial melting is interpreted to have taken place at c. 470 Ma, synchronous with sillimanite‐grade metamorphism recorded elsewhere in the Dalradian. These high‐grade Cairn Leuchan lithologies are interpreted as representing a fragment of Grampian Terrane lower crust that was exhumed via displacement along a steeply dipping tectonic discontinuity related to the Portsoy–Duchray Hill Lineament, and are not pre‐Caledonian Mesoproterozoic basement, as suggested by some previous studies. Veins within some mafic migmatites in the Cairn Leuchan area, composed almost entirely (>80%) of garnet, with minor quartz, plagioclase, amphibole, and clinopyroxene, are interconnected with leucosomes and are interpreted to represent former garnet‐bearing melt segregations that have been locally drained of almost all melt. Thus, mafic components of the lower crust, currently underlying relatively lower grade metasediments exposed to the southeast, may represent a potential source rock for widely documented, post‐orogenic felsic plutons, sills, and dykes that occur throughout the Grampian Terrane. Abstract: High‐strain zones are potential pathways of melt migration through the crust. However, the identification of melt‐present high‐strain deformation is commonly limited to cases where the interpreted volume of melt “frozen” within the high‐strain zone is high (>10%). In this contribution, we examine high‐strain zones in the Pembroke Granulite, an otherwise low‐strain outcrop of volcanic arc lower crust exposed in Fiordland, New Zealand. These high‐strain zones display compositional layering, flaser‐shaped mineral grains, and closely spaced foliation planes indicative of high‐strain deformation. Asymmetric leucosome surrounding peritectic garnet grains suggest deformation was synchronous with minor amounts of in situ partial melting. High‐strain zones lack typical mylonite microstructures and instead display typical equilibrium microstructures, such as straight grain boundaries, 120° triple junctions, and subhedral grain shapes. We identify five key microstructures indicative of the former presence of melt within the high‐strain zones: (a) small dihedral angles of interstitial phases; (b) elongate interstitial grains; (c) small aggregates of quartz grains with xenomorphic plagioclase grains connected in three dimensions; (d) fine‐grained, K‐feldspar bearing, multiphase aggregates with or without augite rims; and (e) mm‐ to cm‐scale felsic dykelets. Preservation of key microstructures indicates that deformation ceased as conditions crossed the solidus, breaking the positive feedback loop between deformation and the presence of melt. We propose that microstructures indicative of the former presence of melt, such as the five identified above, may be used as a tool for recognising rocks formed during melt‐present high‐strain deformation where low (<5%) volumes of leucosome are “frozen” within the high‐strain zone. Abstract: The Chinese Western Tianshan terrane is a well‐known ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) metamorphic belt that mainly consists of subducted oceanic crustal materials. While two uplift stages have been recognized, the early exhumation history has not been fully constrained. We conducted U–Th–Pb and trace element microanalysis of titanite as well as zircon from UHP eclogites. Apart from several inclusions in garnet, three types of retrograde titanite have been identified based on their petrographic occurrences: (a) in matrix enclosing relict rutile; (b) as coarse‐grained coronas around garnet; and (c) in veins coexisting with epidote and/or apatite. The three types of titanite are homogeneous in chemical composition, low in Al, enriched in middle rare earth elements (REEs), and depleted in light REEs and heavy REEs, suggesting their growth during retrograde decompression. Sensitive high‐resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating of titanite from four samples, regardless of their textural occurrences, gave consistent ages of c. 306 Ma. Phase equilibria modelling and Zr‐in‐titanite thermometry indicate that titanite replaced rutile at ~14 kbar and ~570°C, following a nearly isothermal decompression from the UHP peak conditions of 30 kbar and 550–570°C. SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating yields two age groups: c. 320 Ma and c. 305 Ma. The former is generally interpreted to be the age of UHP stage. The latter, overlapping the titanite ages, represents the timing of titanite growth during exhumation. Thus, we estimate that the near‐isothermal exhumation from the UHP peak conditions to the epidote–amphibolite facies retrogression (14 kbar) lasted c. 15 Ma, corresponding to an average exhumation rate of 3.4 ± 2.5 mm/yr (2σ). This exhumation rate lies within the range of oceanic LT‐HP belts in the absence of continental subduction, suggesting a similar slab exhumation mechanism that operates in the UHP regime. The consistent retrograde metamorphic ages recorded by titanite from different localities, and the general agreement among P–T paths in the adjacent area, suggest that the UHP unit of Western Tianshan metamorphic belt was likely exhumed as a coherent unit. Abstract: The Seve Nappe Complex (SNC) of the Scandinavian Caledonides records a well‐documented history of high pressure (HP) and ultra‐high pressure (UHP) metamorphism. Eclogites of the SNC occur in two areas in Sweden, namely Jämtland and Norrbotten. The Jämtland eclogites and associated rocks are well‐studied and provide evidence for late Ordovician UHP metamorphism, whereas the Norrbotten eclogites, formed during the late Cambrian (Furongian)/Early Ordovician, have not been studied in such detail, especially in terms of the P–T conditions of their formation. Within the studied eclogite, clinopyroxene contains a high‐Na core and two rims: inner, medium‐Na and outer, low‐Na. Garnet consists of a high‐Ca euhedral core, low‐Ca inner rim and medium‐Ca outer rim. A similar pattern occurs within phengite, where high‐Si cores are enveloped by medium and low‐Si rims. The compositions of the mineral cores, inner rims and outer rims reflect three stages in the metamorphic evolution of the eclogite. Applied Quartz‐in‐Garnet geobarometry, coupled with Zr‐in‐rutile geothermometry reveal that garnet nucleation (E0 stage) took place at 1.5–1.6 GPa and 620–660°C. The eclogite peak‐pressure assemblage developed during the E1 stage, it consists of garnet+omphacite+phengite+rutile+coesite? and yields P–T conditions of 2.8–3.1 GPa and 660–780°C as constrained by conventional geothermobarometry and thermodynamic modelling in the NCKFMMnASHT system. Later, lower‐pressure stages E2 and E3 record conditions of 2.2–2.8 GPa, 680–780°C and 2.1 GPa, 735°C, respectively. The prograde metamorphic evolution of the eclogite is inferred from inclusions of epidote, amphibole and clinopyroxene within garnet. The presence of amphibole–quartz–plagioclase symplectites, secondary epidote/zoisite and titanite replacing rutile record the later retrograde changes taking place at <1.5 GPa (referred as E4 stage). The obtained P–T conditions indicate that the Norrbotten eclogites underwent a metamorphic evolution characterized by a clockwise P–T path with peak metamorphism reaching up to coesite stability field within a relatively cold subduction regime (7.8°C/km). The obtained results provide the first evidence for UHP metamorphism in the SNC above the Arctic Circle and document cold subduction regime and multistage exhumation of the deeply subducted Baltican margin at early stage of the Caledonian Orogeny. Abstract: The North Qaidam Orogenic Belt (NQOB), lying at the northern margin of the Tibet Plateau, records two orogenic cycles: A Proterozoic cycle related to the amalgamation and breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia, and an Early Palaeozoic cycle including oceanic subduction and continental deep subduction. At present, the only information about the Proterozoic cycle is the concurrent c. 1,000–900 Ma magmatic and metamorphic events, which limited the understanding of the Proterozoic evolution of NQOB and the relationship between the Qaidam Block and other Rodinia fragments. In this study, a kyanite‐bearing eclogite was identified in Yuka terrane. It has positive‐slope chondrite‐normalized rare earth element distribution patterns, similar to present‐day N‐MORB. LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating obtained a protolith age of 1,273 Ma and an eclogite facies metamorphic age of 437 Ma, which is similar to the continental deep subduction age of the Yuka terrane. Zircon Lu–Hf analysis show that the magmatic zircon cores have high εHf(t) of 8.36–15.98 and TDM1 of 1,450–1,131 Ma (M = 1,303 ± 55 Ma, consistent with its protolith age within error), indicating a juvenile crust protolith of the eclogite. The MORB‐like whole‐rock composition and zircon U–Pb and Lu–Hf analysis indicate that the protolith of the kyanite‐bearing eclogite was a Mesoproterozoic oceanic slice. P–T pseudosection analysis shows that the kyanite‐bearing eclogite experienced four metamorphic stages: (1) a prograde stage with the assemblage garnet+omphacite+talc+lawsonite+phengite+quartz at 22.4–23.2 kbar and 585°C; (2) a peak stage with the assemblage garnet+omphacite+lawsonite+phengite+coesite at 32.5 kbar and 670°C; (3) an early retrograde stage with the assemblage garnet+omphacite+kyanite+phengite+coesite/quartz±lawsonite at 27.1–30.0 kbar and 670–690°C; and (4) a late retrograde stage with the assemblage garnet+omphacite+epidote+hornblende+phengite+quartz at <18.0 kbar. The established clockwise P–T path is similar with other continental‐type eclogites in this area. On the basis of the geochemical and geochronological data, as well as the P–T path, we suggest that the protolith of the kyanite‐bearing eclogite was emplaced in the active margin of the Qaidam Block during the assembly of Rodinia and underwent continental deep subduction in the Early Palaeozoic. We conclude that (1) the Qaidam Block participated in the assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent. It was situated at or proximal to the margin of the supercontinent and probably close to India, east Antarctica and Tarim; and (2) both Mesoproterozoic and Early Palaeozoic oceanic crust slices occur in the NQOB. Thus, special caution is needed when using the metamorphic ages of oceanic affinity eclogites without protolith ages to constrain the evolution history of the North Qaidam UHPM belt. As is common in suture zones, widespread high-pressure rocks in the Caribbean region reached eclogite facies conditions close to ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism. Besides eclogite lenses, abundant metapelitic rocks in the Chuacús complex (Guatemala Suture Zone) also preserve evidence for high-pressure metamorphism. A comprehensive petrological and geochronological study was undertaken to constrain the tectonometamorphic evolution of eclogite and associated metapelite from this area in central Guatemala. The integration of field and petrological data allows the reconstruction of a previously unknown segment of the prograde P-T path and shows that these contrasting rock types share a common high-pressure evolution. An early stage of high-pressure/low-temperature metamorphism at 18-20 kbar and 530-580°C is indicated by garnet core compositions as well as the nature and composition of mineral inclusions in garnet, including kyanite-jadeite-paragonite in an eclogite, and chloritoid-paragonite-rutile in a pelitic schist. Peak high-pressure conditions are constrained at 23-25 kbar and 620-690°C by combining mineral assemblages, isopleth thermobarometry and Zr-in-rutile thermometry. A garnet/whole-rock Lu-Hf date of 101.8 ± 3.1 Ma in the kyanite-bearing eclogite indicates the timing of final garnet growth at eclogite facies conditions, while a Lu-Hf date of 95.5 ± 2.1 Ma in the pelitic schist reflects the average age of garnet growth spanning from an early eclogite facies evolution to a final amphibolite facies stage. Concordant U-Pb LA- ICP- MS zircon data from the pelitic schist, in contrast, yield a mean age of 74.0 ± 0.5 Ma, which is equivalent to a U-Pb monazite lower-intercept age of 73.6 ± 2.0 Ma in the same sample, and comparable within errors with a less precise U-Pb lower-intercept age of 80 ± 13 Ma obtained in post-eclogitic titanite from the kyanite-bearing eclogite. These U-Pb metamorphic ages are interpreted as dating an amphibolite facies overprint. Protolith U-Pb zircon ages of 167.1 ± 4.2 Ma and 424.6 ± 5.0 Ma from two eclogite samples reveal that mafic precursors in the Chuacús complex originated in multiple tectonotemporal settings from the Silurian to Jurassic. The integration of petrological and geochronological data suggests that subduction of the continental margin of the North American plate (Chuacús complex) beneath the Greater Antilles arc occurred during an Albian-Cenomanian pre-collisional stage, and that a subsequent Campanian collisional stage is probably responsible of the amphibolite facies overprint and late syncollisional exhumation. Ultrahigh temperature ( UHT) granulites in the Eastern Ghats Province ( EGP) have a complex P-T-t history. We review the P-T histories of UHT metamorphism in the EGP and use that as a framework for investigating the P-T-t history of Mg-Al-rich granulites from Anakapalle, with the express purpose of trying to reconcile the down-pressure-dominated P-T path with other UHT localities in the EGP. Mafic granulite that is host to Mg-Al-rich metasedimentary granulites at Anakapalle has a protolith age of c. 1,580 Ma. Mg-Al-rich metasedimentary granulites within the mafic granulite at Anakapalle were metamorphosed at UHT conditions during tectonism at 960-875 Ma, meaning that the UHT metamorphism was not the result of contact metamorphism from emplacement of the host mafic rock. Reworking occurred during the Pan-African ( c. 600-500 Ma) event, and is interpreted to have produced hydrous assemblages that overprint the post-peak high- T retrograde assemblages. In contrast to rocks elsewhere in the EGP that developed post-peak cordierite, the metasedimentary granulites at Anakapalle developed post-peak, generation '2' reaction products that are cordierite-absent and nominally anhydrous. Therefore, rocks at Anakapalle offer the unique opportunity to quantify the pressure drop that occurred during so-called M2 that affected the EGP. We argue that M2 is either a continuation of M1 and that the overall P-T path shape is a complex counter-clockwise loop, or that M1 is an up-temperature counter-clockwise deviation superimposed on the M2 path. Therefore, rather than the rocks at Anakapalle having a metamorphic history that is apparently anomalous from the rest of the EGP, we interpret that other previously studied localities in the EGP record a different part of the same P-T path history as Anakapalle, but do not preserve a significant record of pressure decrease. This is due either to the inability of refractory rocks to extensively react to produce a rich mineralogical record of pressure decrease, or because the earlier high- P part of the rocks history was erased by the M1 loop. Irrespective of the specific scenario, models for the tectonic evolution of the EGP must take the substantial pressure decrease during M2 into account, as it is probable the P-T record at Anakapalle is a reflection of tectonics affecting the entire province. The Windmill Islands region in Wilkes Land, east Antarctica, preserves granulite facies metamorphic mineral assemblages that yield seemingly comparable P-T estimates from conventional thermobarometry and mineral equilibria modelling. This is uncommon in granulite facies terranes, where conventional thermobarometry and phase equilibria modelling generally produce conflicting P-T estimates because peak mineral compositions tend to be modified by retrograde diffusion processes. In situ U-Pb monazite geochronology and calculated metamorphic phase diagrams show that the Windmill Islands experienced two phases of high thermal gradient metamorphism during the Mesoproterozoic. The first phase of metamorphism is recorded by monazite ages in two widely separated samples and occurred at c. 1,305 Ma. This event was regional in extent, involved crustally derived magmatism and reached conditions of ~3.2-5 kbar and 690-770°C corresponding to very high thermal gradients of >150°C/kbar. The elevated thermal regime is interpreted to reflect a period of extension or increased extension in a back-arc setting that existed prior to c. 1,330 Ma. The first metamorphic event was overprinted by granulite facies metamorphism at c. 1,180 Ma that was coeval with the intrusion of charnockite. This event involved peak temperatures of ~840-850°C and pressures of ~4-5 kbar. A phase of granitic magmatism at c. 1,250-1,210 Ma, prior to the intrusion of the charnockite, is interpreted to reflect a phase of compression within an overall back-arc setting. Existing conventional thermobarometry suggests conditions of ~4 kbar and 750°C for M1 and 4-7 kbar and 750-900°C for M2. The apparent similarities between the phase equilibria modelling and existing conventional thermobarometry may suggest either that the terrane cooled relatively quickly, or that the P-T ranges obtained from conventional thermobarometry are sufficiently imprecise that they cover the range of P-T conditions obtained in this study. However, without phase equilibria modelling, the veracity of existing conventional P-T estimates cannot be evaluated. The calculated phase diagrams from this study allow the direct comparison of P-T conditions in the Windmill Islands with phase equilibria models from other regions in the Musgrave-Albany-Fraser-Wilkes Orogen. This shows that the metamorphic evolution of the Wilkes Land region is very similar to that of the eastern Albany-Fraser Orogen and Musgrave Province in Australia, and further demonstrates the remarkable consistency in the timing of metamorphism and the thermal gradients along the ~5,000 km strike length of this system. The petrogenetic relations among Ti-rich minerals in high-grade metabasites is illuminated here through a detailed petrological investigation of an anatectic garnet-clinopyroxene granulite from the Grenville Province, Ontario, Canada containing rutile, titanite and ilmenite in distinct microtextural settings. Garnet porphyroblasts exhibit zoned Ti concentrations (up to 0.15 wt% TiO2 in their cores), as well as a variety of rutile inclusion types, including clusters of small, variably elongate grains and thin (≤1 μm) oriented needles. Calcite inclusions in garnet, commonly observed surrounding garnet cores containing quartz and clinozoisite, indicate the presence of evolving C-O-H fluids during garnet growth and suggest that the rutile clusters may have formed from subsequent Ti diffusion and rutile precipitation within existing fluid inclusions. Titanite forms large subhedral crystals and typically occurs where the primary garnet-clinopyroxene assemblage is in contact with leucosome containing megacrystic hornblende, silvialitic scapolite and calcic plagioclase. Many titanite crystals exhibit marginal subgrains that correspond with sharp changes in their major and trace element composition, likely related to a dissolution-precipitation or recrystallization process following primary crystallization. Clinopyroxene-ilmenite symplectite coronas surround titanite in most locations, likely forming from reaction with the hornblende-plagioclase matrix (±fluids/melt). Integration of multi-equilibria thermobarometry and Zr thermometry in rutile and titanite with phase equilibrium modelling allows definition of a clockwise P-T path evolving to peak pressures of ~1.5 GPa at ~750°C during garnet and rutile growth, followed by peak temperature conditions of ~1.2 GPa and ~820-880°C associated with melt-present titanite growth, and finally cooling and decompression to regional amphibolite facies conditions (~1.0 GPa and ~750°C) associated with the formation of clinopyroxene-ilmenite symplectites surrounding titanite. P-T pseudosections calculated for the pristine (leucosome- and titanite -free) metabasite bulk composition reproduce much of the prograde phase relations, but predict rutile as the stable Ti-rich mineral at the peak thermal conditions associated with melt-present titanite growth. The P- M(CaO) and T- M(CaO) models show that bulk CaO concentrations have a significant effect on the stability ranges of titanite and rutile. Increased bulk CaO tends to stabilize titanite to higher pressure and temperature at the expense of rutile, with a ≥15% increase in CaO producing the observed titanite-bearing assemblage at high- P granulite facies conditions. Thus, the model results are consistent with the textural observations, which suggest that titanite stability is associated with a chemical exchange between the host metabasite and a Ca-rich melt. ABSTRACT To understand tectono-metamorphic processes within or close to the brittle-ductile transition of quartz-rich crustal rocks in an accretionary wedge, an integrated field, petrological, geochronological and Raman spectroscopic study was conducted on the Mikabu-Northern Chichibu belt in SW Japan. Field mapping in central Shikoku reveals that the Northern Chichibu belt is comprised of a pile of four tectono-stratigraphic units, referred to as A, B, C and D units. The A unit (dominated by pelagic sedimentary rocks) represents the structurally lowest and youngest accretionary complex that forms a composite unit with the Mikabu ophiolitic suite. The B unit (consisting of chert-clastic rock sequences) overlies the A unit and is overlain by the C and D units (mudstone-matrix mélange units). Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material constrains the peak temperature of each unit to be ~290°C for the A unit, 270-290°C for the B unit, 230-250°C for the C unit and ~220°C for the D unit. Ductile deformation and pervasive metamorphism are limited to rocks in the Mikabu, A and B units. Alkali pyroxene and sodic amphibole occur in metabasite from the Mikabu, A and B units, and the widespread occurrence of prograde veins containing lawsonite+quartz pseudomorphs after laumontite was newly recognized from the C unit. Phase petrological data constrain the peak pressure of each unit to be ~0.65 GPa for the Mikabu-A unit (aragonite stable), ~0.45-0.6 GPa for the B unit (jadeite+albite stable in the structurally lower part), and ~0.35 GPa for the C unit (prehnite+lawsonite stable). The peak metamorphic pressure increases towards structurally lower and younger accretionary complexes, but the thickness of the preserved strata is insufficient to account for the inferred pressure range. The structural-metamorphic relations imply thickening of the accretionary wedge by underplating was followed by a significant phase of thinning by both ductile and brittle processes. Forward thermodynamic modelling is a commonly used tool for examining the thermobarometric history of a rock. Such models are being applied to a widening range of rock types using increasingly complex model systems. A useful aspect of phase equilibria modelling using pseudosections is the ability to calculate the modal abundance and compositions of phases, in addition to overall phase relations. However, calculating and plotting such data with thermocalc, a popular modelling program, is time consuming. In this article, we provide the methods and a description of a Matlab® computer program, TCInvestigator, which uses thermocalc 3.40 to automatically contour pre-calculated pressure-temperature pseudosections with modal abundance and mineral composition parameters. The ability to calculate, plot and visualize these parameters automatically and rapidly, allows for a more in-depth investigation into the metamorphic evolution of a rock. Data can be contoured for all minerals that are present in all fields on the pseudosection, rather than a selection of fields or phases that are a priori considered relevant. Examples of contoured pseudosections for pelitic and greywacke bulk compositions are presented, along with accompanying data sets, to illustrate the applications of this program. Dehydration and anatexis of ultrahigh-pressure ( UHP) metamorphic rocks during continental collision are two key processes that have great bearing on the physicochemical properties of deeply subducted continental crust at mantle depths. Determining the time and P-T conditions at which such events take place is needed to understand subduction-zone tectonism. A combined petrological and zirconological study of UHP metagranite from the Sulu orogen reveals differential behaviours of dehydration and anatexis between two samples from the same UHP slice. The zircon mantle domains in one sample record eclogite facies dehydration metamorphism at 236 ± 5 Ma during subduction, exhibiting low REE contents, steep MREE- HREE patterns without negative Eu anomalies, low Th, Nb and Ta contents, low temperatures of 651-750 °C and inclusions of quartz, apatite and jadeite. A second mantle domain records high- T anatexis at 223 ± 3 Ma during exhumation, showing high REE contents, steeper MREE- HREE patterns with marked negative Eu anomalies, high Hf, Nb, Ta, Th and U contents, high temperatures of 698-879 °C and multiphase solid inclusions of albite + muscovite + quartz. In contrast, in a second sample, one zircon mantle domain records limited hydration anatexis at 237 ± 3 Ma during subduction, exhibiting high REE contents, steep MREE- HREE patterns with marked negative Eu anomalies, high Hf, Nb, Ta, Th and U contents, medium temperatures of 601-717 °C and multiphase solid inclusions of albite + muscovite + hydrohalite. A second mantle domain in this sample records a low- T dehydration metamorphism throughout the whole continental collision in the Triassic, showing low REE contents, steep MREE- HREE patterns with weakly negative Eu anomalies, low Th, Nb and Ta contents, low temperatures of 524-669 °C and anhydrite + gas inclusions. Garnet, phengite and allanite/epidote in these two samples also exhibit different variations in texture and major-trace element compositions, in accordance with the zircon records. The distinct P-T-t paths for these two samples suggest separate processes of dehydration and anatexis, which are ascribed to the different geothermal gradients at different positions inside the same crustal slice during continental subduction-zone metamorphism. Lawsonite-bearing metamorphic/metasomatic rocks form at high-pressure-ultrahigh pressure (H P-UH P) and low-temperature (L T) conditions, commonly in Pacific-type subduction zones. The P-T stability fields of lawsonite blueschists and lawsonite eclogites represent subfacies of the blueschist and eclogite facies, respectively. Although the lawsonite-epidote transition boundary has a positive Clapeyron ( d P/ d T) slope, the blueschist-to-eclogite transformation within the lawsonite stability field in metabasaltic rocks is gradual and cannot be defined by a specific discontinuous reaction in P-T space. The oldest occurrences of lawsonite-bearing blueschists are latest Neoproterozoic, suggesting that subduction-zone thermal structures evolved towards the necessary L T conditions for lawsonite formation only by the late Neoproterozoic. A clear difference in frequency between Phanerozoic lawsonite and epidote blueschists does not exist, but our new compilation found a global lawsonite hiatus in the Permian that is a robust indication of relatively warm subduction-zone thermal regimes. Lawsonite eclogites have been confirmed from at least 19 localities; they are classified as L- (lawsonite only), E- (lawsonite + epidote), and U-type (lawsonite + coesite). Complete preservation of L-type lawsonite eclogites attending their return to the surface is uncommon. Rare evidence of progressive eclogitization within the lawsonite stability field is preserved in some zoned garnets, as growth isolates a significant volume of precursor phases and textures during incipient eclogitization. Brittle fracturing and fluid infiltration are common during prograde eclogite facies metamorphism. Certain lawsonite-bearing metasomatic rocks record multiple fluid-infiltration events. Significant cooling and continuous H2O supply from the dehydrating oceanic plate to exhuming H P serpentinite mélange may cause lawsonite blueschist facies overprinting and prevent breakdown of lawsonite during decompression. In situ LA- ICP- MS U-Pb monazite geochronology from the Boothby Hills in the Aileron Province, central Australia, indicates that the region records more than 80 Ma of high- T, low- P ( HTLP) anatectic conditions during the Early Mesoproterozoic. Monazite ages from granulite facies rocks and leucosomes span the interval 1576-1542 Ma. Pegmatites that overprint the regional gneissic fabric and are interpreted to record the last vestiges of melt crystallization give ages between 1523 and 1513 Ma. Calculated P-T pseudosections suggest peak metamorphic conditions in excess of 850 °C at 0.65-0.75 GPa. The retrograde evolution was characterized by a P-T path that involved minor decompression and then cooling, culminating with the development of andalusite. Integration of the geochronological data set with the inferred P-T path trajectory suggests that suprasolidus cooling must have been slow, in the order of 2.5-4 °C Ma−1. In addition, the retrograde P-T path trajectory suggests that HTLP conditions were generated within crust of relatively normal thickness. Despite the long duration over which anatectic conditions occurred, there is no evidence for external magmatic inputs or evidence that HTLP conditions were associated with long-lived extension. Instead, it seems probable that the long-lived HTLP metamorphism was driven to a significant extent by long-lived conductive heating provided by high crustal heat production in voluminous pre-metamorphic granitic rocks. U–Pb age, trace element and Hf isotope compositions of zircon were analysed for a metasedimentary rock and two amphibolites from the Kongling terrane in the northern part of the Yangtze Craton. The zircon shows distinct morphological and chemical characteristics. Most zircon in an amphibolite shows oscillatory zoning, high Th/U and 176Lu/177Hf ratios, high formation temperature, high trace element contents, clear negative Eu anomaly, as well as HREE-enriched patterns, suggesting that it is igneous. The zircon yields a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 2857 ± 8 Ma, representing the age of the magmatic protolith. The zircon in the other two samples is metamorphic. It has low Th/U ratios, low trace element concentrations, variable HREE contents (33.8 ≥ LuN≥2213; 14.7 ≤ LuN/SmN ≤ 354) and 176Lu/177Hf ratios (0.000030–0.001168). The data indicate that the zircon formed in the presence of garnet and under upper amphibolite facies conditions. The metamorphic zircon yields a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 2010 ± 13 Ma. These results combined with previously obtained Palaeoproterozoic metamorphic ages suggest a c. 2.0 Ga Palaeoproterozoic collisional event in the Yangtze Craton, which may result from the assembly of the supercontinent Columbia. The zircon in two samples yields weighted mean two-stage Hf model ( TDM2) ages of 3217 ± 110 and 2943 ± 50 Ma, respectively, indicating that their protoliths were mainly derived from Archean crust. A major arc batholith, the Western Fiordland Orthogneiss (WFO) in Fiordland, New Zealand, exhibits irregular, spatially restricted centimetre-scale recrystallization from two-pyroxene hornblende granulite to garnet granulite flanking felsic dykes. At Lake Grave, northern Fiordland, the composition and texture of narrow (<10–20 mm across) felsic dykes that cut the orthogneiss are consistent with an igneous origin and injection of melt to form orthogneiss migmatite. New U–Pb geochronology suggests that the injection of dykes and migmatization occurred at c. 115 Ma, during the later stages of arc magmatism. Recrystallization to garnet granulite is promoted by volatile extraction from the host two-pyroxene hornblende granulite via adjacent dykes and the patchy development of garnet granulite is left as a marker adjacent to the melt migration path. New mineral equilibria modelling suggests that a two-pyroxene hornblende assemblage is stable at <11 kbar, whereas a garnet granulite assemblage is stable at >12 kbar, suggesting that garnet granulite may have formed with <5 km crustal loading of the batholith. Although the garnet granulite assemblages signify that the WFO experienced high- P conditions, the very local nature of these textures indicates widespread metastability (>90%) of the two-pyroxene hornblende granulite assemblages. These results indicate the strongly metastable nature of assemblages in mafic lower arc crust during deep burial and demonstrate that the degree of reaction in the case of Fiordland is related to interaction with migrating melts. Orthopyroxene-rich quartz-saturated granulites of the Strangways Range, Arunta Block, central Australia, record evidence of two high-grade metamorphic events. Initial granulite facies metamorphism (M1, at c. 1.7 Ga) involved partial melting and migmatization culminating in conditions of 8.5 kbar and 850 °C. Preservation of the peak M1 mineral assemblages from these conditions indicates that most of the generated melt was lost from these rocks at or near peak metamorphic conditions. Subsequent reworking (M2, at c. 1.65 Ga) is characterized by intense deformation, the absence of partial melting and the development of orthopyroxene–sillimanite ± gedrite-bearing mineral assemblages. Gedrite is only present in cordierite-rich lithologies where it preferentially replaces M1 cordierite porphyroblasts. Pseudosection calculations indicate that M2 occurred at subsolidus fluid-absent conditions ( aH2o ∼ 0.2) at 6–7.5 kbar and 670–720 °C. The mineral assemblages in the reworked rocks are consistent with closed system behaviour with respect to H2O subsequent to M1 melt loss. M2 reworking was primarily driven by increased temperature from the stable geotherm reached after cooling from M1 and deformation-induced recrystallization and re-equilibration, rather than rehydration from an externally derived fluid. The development of the M2 assemblages is strongly dependent on the intensity of deformation, not only for promoting equilibration, but also for equalizing the volume changes that result from metamorphic reactions. Calculations suggest that the protoliths of the orthopyroxene-rich granulites were cordierite–orthoamphibole gneisses, rather than pelites, and that the unusual bulk compositions of these rocks were inherited from the protoliths. Melt loss is insufficient to account for the genesis of these rocks from more typical pelitic compositions. In quartz-rich gneisses, however, melt loss along the M1 prograde path was able to modify the bulk rock composition sufficiently to stabilize peak metamorphic assemblages different from those that would have otherwise developed. Although the U–Pb zircon chronometer has been widely used for dating metamorphism in moderate- to high-grade rocks, it is generally difficult to link the U–Pb age of zircon to specific metamorphic reactions. In this study, the initial Hf isotopic composition of secondary zircon is compared with the evolution of Hf isotopic composition of the bulk sample, back-projected from the measured value through time. This approach may enhance the interpretation of radiometric ages performed on metamorphic mineral assemblages. Here, U–Pb, Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf geochronology and thermobarometry have been integrated and applied to two metamorphosed diabase dykes in the Sveconorwegian orogen, SW Sweden. The dykes are located ∼5 km east of the NNE-trending Göta Älv deformation zone in the Idefjorden terrane, and trend parallel to this zone. The Lunden dyke is recrystallized into a coronitic, granulite facies assemblage. U–Pb isotopic analyses of baddeleyite in this dyke indicate an emplacement age of c. 1300 Ma. Thermobarometric techniques applied to garnet and omphacitic clinopyroxene coronas indicate high-pressure metamorphism at ∼15 kbar and ∼740 °C. The growth of polycrystalline zircon at the expense of baddeleyite occurred at 1046 ± 6 Ma. The identical Hf isotopic composition of polycrystalline zircon and baddeleyite shows that the baddeleyite-to-zircon transition took place before Hf equilibration among the other metamorphic minerals and, hence the c. 1046 Ma age of polycrystalline zircon sets an upper age limit of metamorphism of this sample. The Haregården dyke is recrystallized into a granoblastic transitional upper amphibolite to granulite facies assemblage. The estimated P–T conditions are ∼10 kbar and ∼700 °C. Analyses of small (∼30 μm), clear and round zircon in this sample yield a Concordia U–Pb age of 1026 ± 4 Ma, which is indistinguishable from the Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd mineral isochron ages of 1027 ± 9 and 1022 ± 34 Ma, respectively. This type of secondary zircon plots at the lower end of the Lu-Hf isochron and indicates simultaneous growth with garnet at c. 1026 Ma, a time when Hf isotopic equilibrium among minerals must have been reached. Evolving pressure–temperature conditions during metamorphism drive changes in the stable mineral assemblage, mineral proportions and mineral compositions in rocks. These changes are achieved via the diffusion of components between minerals, fluid and melt, the driving force for diffusion being the gradients in chemical potential of the components developed spatially within the rock. This study utilises recent developments in the softwarethermocalc to investigate quantitatively chemical potential relationships in rocks, with the phases involved being (solid) solutions. Phase diagrams with chemical potentials as axes are used to understand better the spatial rearrangement of components during the metamorphic evolution of rocks and the metamorphic textures that result. In contrast to qualitative chemical potential diagrams, quantitative diagrams can be contoured for mineral composition, allowing consideration of chemical zoning in minerals. Furthermore, the amount of material required to diffuse to equalise chemical potentials can be calculated. We start by demonstrating the approach via an example of retrograde corona development in an ultra-high-temperature granulite. Whereas the use of chemical potentials to consider the retrograde development of corona textures is well known, they are also significant in considering the prograde history. The role of chemical potentials in prograde metamorphic textural evolution is highlighted in consideration of the consumption and growth of aluminosilicates during the kyanite-to-sillimanite reaction, and the growth of garnet porphyroblasts. Pan-African high-pressure granulites occur as boudins and layers in the Lurio Belt in north-eastern Mozambique, eastern Africa. Mafic granulites contain the mineral assemblage garnet + clinopyroxene + plagioclase + quartz ± magnesiohastingsite. Garnet porphyroblasts are zoned with increasing almandine and spessartine contents and decreasing grossular and pyrope contents from core (Alm46Prp32Grs21Sps2) to rim (Alm52Prp26Grs19Sps3). This pattern is interpreted as a retrograde diffusion zoning with the preserved core chemistry representing the peak metamorphic composition. Mineral reaction textures occur in the form of monomineralic and composite plagioclase ± orthopyroxene ± amphibole ± biotite ± magnetite coronas around garnet porphyroblasts. Thermobarometry indicates peak metamorphic conditions of up to 1.57 ± 0.14 GPa and 949 ± 92 °C (stage I), corresponding to crustal depths of ∼55 km. Zircon yielded an U–Pb age of 557 ± 16 Ma, inferred to date crystallization of zircon during peak or immediately post-peak metamorphism. Formation of plagioclase + orthopyroxene-bearing coronas surrounding garnet indicates a near-isothermal decompression of the high-pressure granulites to lower pressure granulite facies conditions (stage II). Development of plagioclase + amphibole-coronas enclosing the same garnet porphyroblasts shows subsequent cooling into amphibolite facies conditions (stage III). Symplectitic textures of the corona assemblages indicate rapid decompression. The high-pressure granulite facies metamorphism of the Lurio Belt, followed by near-isothermal decompression and subsequent cooling, is in accordance with a long-lived tectonic history accompanied by high magmatic activity in the Lurio Belt during the late Neoproterozoic–early Palaeozoic East-African–Antarctic orogeny.
