Supertubes are supersymmetric configurations in string theory in which branes are extending along a closed curve. For a supertube of codimension two, its dipole charge is characterized by the duality monodromy around the closed curve. When multiple codimension-2 supertubes are present, the monodromies around different supertubes can be non-commuting, namely non-Abelian. Non-Abelian configurations of supertubes are expected to play an important role in non-perturbative physics of string theory, especially black holes. In this paper, in the framework of five-dimensional supergravity, we construct exact solutions describing codimension-2 supertubes in three-dimensional space. We use an extension formula to construct a three-dimensional solution from a two-dimensional seed solution. The two-dimensional seed is an F-theory like configuration in which a torus is nontrivially fibered over a complex plane. In the first example, there is a stack of circular supertubes around which there is a non-trivial monodromy. In some cases this can be thought of as a microstate of a black hole in AdS2 × S2. The second example is an axi-symmetric solution with two stacks of circular supertubes with non-Abelian monodromies. In addition, there is a continuous distribution of charges on the symmetry axis. The T T ¯ deformation is a solvable irrelevant deformation whose properties depend on the sign of the deformation parameter μ. In particular, T T ¯ -deformed CFTs with μ < 0 have been proposed to be holographically dual to Einstein gravity where the metric satisfies Dirichlet boundary conditions at a finite cutoff surface. In this paper, we put forward a holographic proposal for T T ¯ -deformed CFTs with μ > 0, in which case the bulk geometry is constructed by gluing a patch of AdS3 to the original spacetime. As evidence, we show that the T T ¯ trace flow equation, the spectrum on the cylinder, and the partition function on the torus and the sphere, among other results, can all be reproduced from bulk calculations in glue-on AdS3. Recently introduced connections between quantum codes and Narain CFTs provide a simple ansatz to express a modular-invariant function Z τ τ ¯ in terms of a multivariate polynomial satisfying certain additional properties. These properties include algebraic identities, which ensure modular invariance of Z τ τ ¯ , and positivity and integrality of coefficients, which imply positivity and integrality of the 픲(1)n × 픲(1)n character expansion of Z τ τ ¯ . Such polynomials come naturally from codes, in the sense that each code of a certain type gives rise to the so-called enumerator polynomial, which automatically satisfies all necessary properties, while the resulting Z τ τ ¯ is the partition function of the code CFT — the Narain theory unambiguously constructed from the code. Yet there are also "fake" polynomials satisfying all necessary properties, that are not associated with any code. They lead to Z τ τ ¯ satisfying all modular bootstrap constraints (modular invariance and positivity and integrality of character expansion), but whether they are partition functions of any actual CFT is unclear. We consider the group of the six simplest fake polynomials and denounce the corresponding Z's as fake: we show that none of them is the torus partition function of any Narain theory. Moreover, four of them are not partition functions of any unitary 2d CFT; our analysis for other two is inconclusive. Our findings point to an obvious limitation of the modular bootstrap approach: not every solution of the full set of torus modular bootstrap constraints is due to an actual CFT. We calculate numerically the torus one-point string diagram in the two-dimensional string cosmology background by decomposing the one-point functions in c = 1 and c = 25 Liouville CFT into torus one-point Virasoro conformal blocks and integrating over the fundamental domain of the torus moduli space. We find a remarkably simple result as a function of the outgoing closed string energy. This torus one-point diagram is expected to contribute to the one-point cosmological wavefunction at order gs, and to the four-point cosmological wavefunction at order g s 2 through the disconnected product of the torus one-point diagram and the sphere three-point diagram. We compute the equivariant partition function of the six-dimensional M-string SCFTs on a background with the topology of a product of a two-dimensional torus and an ALE singularity. We determine the result by exploiting BPS strings probing the singularity, whose worldvolume theories we determine via a chain of string dualities. A distinguished feature we observe is that for this class of background the BPS strings' worldsheet theories become relative field theories that are sensitive to finer discrete data generalizing to 6d the familiar choices of flat connections at infinity for instantons on ALE spaces. We test our proposal against a conjectural 6d N = (1, 0) generalization of the Nekrasov master formula, as well as against known results on ALE partition functions in four dimensions. Two dimensional conformal field theories have been extensively studied in the past. When considered on the torus, they are strongly constrained by modular invariance. However, introducing relevant deformations or chemical potentials pushes these theories away from criticality, where many of their aspects are still poorly understood. In this note we make a step towards filling this gap, by analyzing the theory of a Dirac fermion on the torus, deformed by a mass term and a chemical potential for the particle number symmetry. The theory breaks conformal and Lorentz invariance, and we study its spectrum and partition function. We also focus on two limits that are interesting on their own right: a massless relativistic fermion with nonzero chemical potential (a simple model for CFTs at finite density), and nonrelativistic Schrodinger fermions (of relevance in condensed matter systems). Taking inspiration from recent developments in massive modular forms, we obtain a representation of the torus free energy based on Fourier-transforming over a twisted boundary condition. This dual representation fullfills many properties analogous to modular invariance in CFTs. Using the shadow formalism we find global conformal blocks of torus CFT2. It is shown that n-point torus blocks in the "necklace" channel (a loop with n legs) are expressed in terms of a hypergeometric-type function which we refer to as the necklace function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study a decoupling limit of M-theory where the three-form gauge potential becomes critical. This limit leads to nonrelativistic M-theory coupled to a non-Lorentzian spacetime geometry. Nonrelativistic M-theory is U-dual to M-theory in the discrete light cone quantization, a non-perturbative approach related to the Matrix theory description of M-theory. We focus on the compactification of nonrelativistic M-theory over a two-torus that exhibits anisotropic behaviors due to the foliation structure of the spacetime geometry. We develop a frame covariant formalism of the toroidal geometry, which provides a geometrical interpretation of the recently discovered polynomial realization of SL(2 , ℤ) duality in nonrelativistic type IIB superstring theory. We will show that the nonrelativistic IIB string background fields transform as polynomials of an effective Galilean "boost velocity" on the two-torus. As an application, we construct an action principle describing a single M5-brane in nonrelativistic M-theory and study its compactification over the anisotropic two-torus. This procedure leads to a D3-brane action in nonrelativistic IIB string theory that makes the SL(2 , ℤ) invariance manifest in the polynomial realization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct, following [1-2], a massive M2-brane (supermembrane) as the limit of a genus two M2-brane that becomes a twice punctured Riemann surface with particular boundary conditions on the fields defined on the punctures. The target space is M9 × LCD, where LCD is a genus one light cone diagram. It contains mass terms and a topological term associated with the non-triviality of the target surface that, at low energies, can be associated with the presence of a cosmological constant. We show that the supergravity background of the M2-brane considered in this formulation requires the presence of M9-branes acting as sources. They correspond to the 11D uplift of the characteristic D8's of Romans supergravity. To this end, we explicitly show that some of the background singularities of the massive M2-brane can be reproduced by the M9-branes found by [3]. This establishes a relation between the Romans mass and the moduli of the massive M2-brane. When dimensionally reduced, we obtain a worldsheet Hamiltonian of a N=2 type IIA closed superstring in 10D. We denote it massive string. The corresponding massive string inherits a non-vanishing constant term from the topological massive M2-brane that shifts the Hamiltonian. The non-vanishing parameter is related to the non-trivial structure of the massive M2-brane background and it can be related to the Romans mass term. It also contains a modified tension due to the non-trivial dependence on the moduli and on the punctures associated with the target torus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional (2d) field theories invariant under the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra, or 2d BMSFTs in short, are putative holographic duals of Einstein gravity in 3d asymptotically flat spacetimes. When defined on a torus, these field theories come equipped with a modified modular structure. We use the modular covariance of the BMS torus two-point function to develop formulae for different three-point structure constants of the field theory. These structure constants indicate that BMSFTs follow the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, albeit with some interesting changes to usual 2d CFTs. The singularity structures of the structure constants contain information on perturbations of cosmological horizons in 3d asymptotically flat spacetimes, which we show can also be obtained as a limit of BTZ quasinormal modes. We recently constructed type-IIB compactifications to four dimensions depending on a single additional coordinate, where a five-form flux Φ on an internal torus leads to a constant string coupling. Supersymmetry is fully broken when the internal manifold includes a finite interval of length ℓ, which is spanned by a conformal coordinate in a finite range 0 < z < zm. Here we examine the low-lying bosonic spectra and their classical stability, paying special attention to self-adjoint boundary conditions. Special boundary conditions result in the emergence of zero modes, which are determined exactly by first-order equations. The different sectors of the spectrum can be related to Schrödinger operators on a finite interval, characterized by pairs of real constants μ and μ ~ , with μ equal to 1/3 or 2/3 in all cases and different values of μ ~ . The potentials behave as μ 2 − 1 / 4 z 2 and μ ~ 2 − 1 / 4 z m − z 2 near the ends and can be closely approximated by exactly solvable trigonometric ones. With vanishing internal momenta, one can thus identify a wide range of boundary conditions granting perturbative stability, despite the intricacies that emerge in some sectors. For the Kaluza-Klein excitations of non-singlet vectors and scalars the Schrödinger systems couple pairs of fields, and the stability regions, which depend on the background, widen as the ratio Φ/ℓ4 decreases. We study further the duality between semiclassical AdS3 and formal CFT2 ensembles. First, we study torus wormholes (Maldacena-Maoz wormholes with two torus boundaries) with one insertion or two insertions on each boundary and find that they give non-decaying contribution to the product of two torus one-point or two-point functions at late-time. Second, we study the ℤ2 quotients of a torus wormhole such that the outcome has one boundary. We identify quotients that give non-decaying contributions to the torus two-point function at late-time. We comment on reflection (R) or time-reversal (T) symmetry vs. the combination RT that is a symmetry of any relativistic field theory. RT symmetry itself implies that to the extent that a relativistic quantum field theory exhibits random matrix statistics it should be of the GOE type for bosonic states and of the GSE type for fermionic states. We study four-dimensional superconformal field theories living on the worldvolume of D3 branes probing minimally-supersymmetric F-theory backgrounds, focusing on the case of orbi-orientifold setups with and without 7-branes. We observe that these theories are closely related to compactifications of six-dimensional 풩 = (1, 0) theories on a torus with flux, where the flux quanta is mapped in Type IIB to the defining data of the orbifold group. We analyze the cases of class 풮k theories as well as of compactifications of the E-string and of orbi-instanton theories. We discuss a class of Little String Theories (LSTs) whose low energy descriptions are supersymmetric gauge theories on the Ω-background with gauge group U(N) and matter in the adjoint representation. We show that the instanton partition function of these theories can be written in terms of Kronecker-Eisenstein series, which in a particular limit of the deformation parameters of the Ω-background organise themselves into Greens functions of free scalar fields on a torus. We provide a concrete identification between (differences of) such propagators and Nekrasov subfunctions. The latter are also characterised by counting specific holomorphic curves in a Calabi-Yau threefold XN,1 which engineers the LST. Furthermore, using the formulation of the partition function in terms of the Kronecker-Eisenstein series, we argue for new recursive structures which relate higher instanton contributions to products of lower ones. We examine six-dimensional SU(n) gauge theories compactified on a two-dimensional torus with a constant magnetic flux background to obtain a comprehensive low-energy mass spectrum. We introduce general background configurations including the magnetic flux and continuous Wilson line phases, consistent with classical equations of motion. Under the standard gauge fixing procedure, the complete mass spectrum in low-energy effective theory for the SU(n) case is newly presented without imposing restrictions on the gauge fixing parameter. Our analysis confirms the inevitable existence of tachyonic modes, which neither depend on the background configurations of Wilson line phases nor are affected by the gauge fixing parameter. Masses for some low-energy modes exhibit dependence on the gauge fixing parameter, and these modes are identified as would-be Goldstone bosons that are absorbed by massive four-dimensional vector fields. We discuss the phenomenological implications associated with stabilization or condensation of the tachyonic states. Various mass spectra and symmetry-breaking patterns are expected with flux backgrounds in the SU(n) case. We give the first numerical calculation of the spectrum of the Laplacian acting on bundle-valued forms on a Calabi-Yau three-fold. Specifically, we show how to compute the approximate eigenvalues and eigenmodes of the Dolbeault Laplacian acting on bundle-valued (p, q)-forms on Kähler manifolds. We restrict our attention to line bundles over complex projective space and Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces therein. We give three examples. For two of these, ℙ3 and a Calabi-Yau one-fold (a torus), we compare our numerics with exact results available in the literature and find complete agreement. For the third example, the Fermat quintic three-fold, there are no known analytic results, so our numerical calculations are the first of their kind. The resulting spectra pass a number of non-trivial checks that arise from Serre duality and the Hodge decomposition. The outputs of our algorithm include all the ingredients one needs to compute physical Yukawa couplings in string compactifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate the presence of non-invertible symmetries in an infinite family of superconformal Argyres-Douglas theories. This class of theories arises from diagonal gauging of the flavor symmetry of a collection of multiple copies of Dp(SU(N)) theories. The same set of theories that we study can also be realized from 6d N = (1, 0) compactification on a torus. The main example in this class is the (A2, D4) theory. We show in detail that this specific theory bears the same structures of non-invertible duality and triality defects as those of N = 4 super Yang-Mills with gauge algebra 픰픲(2). We extend this result to infinitely many other Argyres-Douglas theories in the same family, including those with central charges a = c whose conformal manifold is one dimensional, and those with a ≠ c whose conformal manifold has dimension larger than one. An important problem in Quantum Field Theory (QFT) is to understand the structures of observables on spacetime manifolds of nontrivial topology. Such observables arise naturally when studying physical systems at finite temperature and/or finite volume and encode subtle properties of the underlying microscopic theory that are often obscure on the flat spacetime. Locality of the QFT implies that these observables can be constructed from more basic building blocks by cutting-and-gluing along a spatial slice, where a crucial ingredient is the Hilbert space on the spatial manifold. In Conformal Field Theory (CFT), thanks to the operator-state correspondence, we have a non-perturbative understanding of the Hilbert space on a spatial sphere. However it remains a challenge to consider more general spatial manifolds. Here we study CFTs in spacetime dimensions d > 2 on the spatial manifold T2 × ℝd−3 which is one of the simplest manifolds beyond the spherical topology. We focus on the ground state in this Hilbert space and analyze universal properties of the ground state energy, also commonly known as the Casimir energy, which is a nontrivial function of the complex structure moduli τ of the torus. The Casimir energy is subject to constraints from modular invariance on the torus which we spell out using PSL(2, ℤ) spectral theory. Moreover we derive a simple universal formula for the Casimir energy in the thin torus limit using the effective field theory (EFT) from Kaluza-Klein reduction of the CFT, with exponentially small corrections from worldline instantons. We illustrate our formula with explicit examples from well-known CFTs including the critical O(N) model in d = 3 and holographic CFTs in d ≥ 3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the complex structure moduli dependence of the scalar Laplacian eigenmodes for one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau n-folds in ℙn+1. It was previously observed that some eigenmodes get lighter while others get heavier as a function of these moduli, which leads to eigenvalue crossing. We identify the cause for this behavior for the torus. We then show that at points in a sublocus of complex structure moduli space where Laplacian eigenmodes cross, the torus has complex multiplication. We speculate that the generalization to arbitrary Calabi-Yau manifolds could be that level crossing is related to rank one attractor points. To test this, we compute the eigenmodes numerically for the quartic K3 and the quintic threefold, and match crossings to CM and attractor points in these varieties. To quantify the error of our numerical methods, we also study the dependence of the numerical spectrum on the quality of the Calabi-Yau metric approximation, the number of points sampled from the Calabi-Yau variety, the truncation of the eigenbasis, and the distance from degeneration points in complex structure moduli space. We develop a bottom-up approach to flavour models which combine modular symmetry with orbifold constructions. We first consider a 6d orbifold 핋2/ℤN, with a single torus defined by one complex coordinate z and a single modulus field τ, playing the role of a flavon transforming under a finite modular symmetry. We then consider 10d orbifolds with three factorizable tori, each defined by one complex coordinate zi and involving the three moduli fields τ1, τ2, τ3 transforming under three finite modular groups. Assuming supersymmetry, consistent with the holomorphicity requirement, we consider all 10d orbifolds of the form (핋2)3/(ℤN × ℤM), and list those which have fixed values of the moduli fields (up to an integer). The key advantage of such 10d orbifold models over 4d models is that the values of the moduli are not completely free but are constrained by geometry and symmetry. To illustrate the approach we discuss a 10d modular seesaw model with S 4 3 modular symmetry based on (핋2)3/(ℤ4× ℤ2) where τ1 = i, τ2 = i + 2 are constrained by the orbifold, while τ3 = ω is determined by imposing a further remnant S4 flavour symmetry, leading to a highly predictive example in the class CSD(n) with n = 1 − 6 . We extend the work of Schwarz [1] to show that bound states of type IIB supersymmetric (p, q)-strings on a circle are associated with M2-branes irreducibly wrapped on T2, or equivalently with nontrivial worldvolume fluxes. Beyond this extension we consider the Hamiltonian of an M2-brane with C± fluxes formulated on a symplectic torus bundle with monodromy. In particular, we analyze the relevant case when the monodromy is parabolic. We show that the Hamiltonian is defined in terms of the coinvariant module. We also find that the mass operator is invariant under transformations between inequivalent coinvariants. These coinvariants classify the inequivalent classes of twisted torus bundles with nontrivial monodromy for a given flux. We obtain their associated (p, q)-strings via double dimensional reduction, which are invariant under a parabolic subgroup of SL(2, ℚ). This is the origin of the gauge symmetry of the associated gauged supergravity. These bound states could also be related to the parabolic Scherk-Schwarz reductions of type IIB string theory. Whenever a system possesses a conserved charge, the density matrix splits into eigenspaces associated to the each symmetry sector and we can access the entanglement entropy in a given subspace, known as symmetry resolved entanglement (SRE). Here, we first evaluate the SRE for massless Dirac fermions in a system at finite temperature and size, i.e. on a torus. Then we add a massive term to the Dirac action and we treat it as a perturbation of the massless theory. The charge-dependent entropies turn out to be equally distributed among all the symmetry sectors at leading order. However, we find subleading corrections which depend both on the mass and on the boundary conditions along the torus. We also study the resolution of the fermionic negativity in terms of the charge imbalance between two subsystems. We show that also for this quantity, the presence of the mass alters the equipartition among the different imbalance sectors at subleading order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We calculate the gaugino condensate in SU(2) super Yang-Mills theory on an asymmetric four-torus 핋4 with 't Hooft's twisted boundary conditions. The 핋4 asymmetry is controlled by a dimensionless detuning parameter ∆, proportional to L3L4 − L1L2, with Li denoting the 핋4 periods. We perform our calculations via a path integral on a 핋4. Its size is taken much smaller than the inverse strong scale Λ and the theory is well inside the semi-classical weak-coupling regime. The instanton background, constructed for ∆ ≪ 1 in [1], has fractional topological charge Q = 1 2 and supports two gaugino zero modes, yielding a non-vanishing bilinear condensate, which we find to be ∆-independent. Further, the theory has a mixed discrete chiral/1-form center anomaly leading to double degeneracy of the energy eigenstates on any size torus with 't Hooft twists. In particular, there are two vacua, ∣0〉 and ∣1〉, that are exchanged under chiral transformation. Using this information, the ∆-independence of the condensate, and assuming further that the semi-classical theory is continuously connected to the strongly-coupled large-핋4 regime, we determine the numerical coefficient of the gaugino condensate: 〈0|trλλ|0〉 = ∣〈1|trλλ|1〉∣ = 32π2Λ3, a result equal to twice the known ℝ4 value. The finite-volume thermodynamics of a massive integrable QFT is described in terms of a grand canonical ensemble of loops immersed in a torus and interacting through scattering factors associated with their intersections. The path integral of the loops is evaluated explicitly after decoupling the pairwise interactions by a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. The HS fields are holomorphic fields depending on the rapidity and can be expanded in elementary oscillators. The torus partition function is expressed as certain expectation value in the Fock space of these oscillators. In the limit where one of the periods of the torus becomes asymptotically large, the effective field theory becomes mean field type. We study the 3d N = 2 theories resulting from the compactification of a family of 5d SCFTs on a torus with flux in the global symmetry. The family of 5d SCFTs used in the analysis is the one that UV completes the 5d SU(N + 1) gauge theories with Chern-Simons level k and Nf fundamental hypermultiplets, generalizing the previous investigation of the torus compactifications of the rank 1 Seiberg E N f + 1 SCFT (which is the N = 1 member of the family). This construction systematically yields three-dimensional theories presenting highly non-trivial non-perturbative phenomena such as infra-red dualities and enhanced symmetries, which we check using various methods. We present a family of new M2-brane solutions in AdS7× S4 that calculate toroidal BPS surface operators in the N = (2, 0) theory. These observables are conformally invariant and not subject to anomalies so we are able to evaluate their finite expectation values at leading order at large N. In the limit of a thin torus we find a cylinder, which is a natural surface generalization of both the circular and parallel lines Wilson loop. We study and comment on this limit in some detail.
