The non-exponential character of the structural relaxation is considered one of the hallmarks of the glassy dynamics, and in this context, the relatively narrow shape observed by dielectric techniques for polar glass formers has attracted the attention of the community for long time. This work addresses the phenomenology and role of specific non-covalent interactions in the structural relaxation of glass-forming liquids by the study of polar tributyl phosphate. We show that dipole interactions can couple to shear stress and modify the flow behavior, preventing the occurrence of the simple liquid behavior. We investigate the kinetics of enthalpy recovery in stacked glassy polystyrene (PS) films with thickness from 30 to 95 nm over a wide temperature range below the glass transition temperature (Tg). We show that the time evolution toward equilibrium exhibits two mechanisms of recovery, in ways analogous to bulk PS. The fast mechanism, allowing partial enthalpy recovery toward equilibrium, displays Arrhenius temperature dependence with low activation energy, whereas the slow mechanism follows pronounced super-Arrhenius temperature dependence. In comparison to bulk PS, the time scales of the two mechanisms of recovery are considerably shorter and decreasing with the film thickness. Scaling of the equilibration times at various thicknesses indicates that the fast mechanism of recovery is compatible with the free volume holes diffusion model. Conversely, the slow mechanism of recovery appears to be accelerated with decreasing thickness more than predicted by the model and, therefore, its description requires additional ingredients. The implications, from both a fundamental and technological viewpoint, of the ability of thin polymer films to densify in relatively short time scales are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the Debye-like relaxation in a series of monoalcohols (MAs) by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and thermally stimulated depolarization current techniques in order to get further insight on the time dispersion of this intriguing relaxation. Results indicate that the Debyelike relaxation of MAs is not always of exponential type and conforms well to a dispersion of Cole-Davidson type. Apart from the already reported non-exponentiality of the Debye-like relaxation in 2-hexyl-1-decanol and 2-butyl-1-octanol, a detailed analysis of the dielectric permittivity of 5-methyl-3-heptanol shows that this MA also presents some extent of dispersion on its Debye-like relaxation which strongly depends on the temperature. Results suggest that the nonexponential character of the Debye-like relaxation might be a general characteristic in the case of not so intense Debye-like relaxations relative to the α relaxation. We have combined X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction with polarization analysis, small angle neutron scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, and broad band dielectric spectroscopy to investigate the structure and dynamics of binary mixtures of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) with either water or tetrahydrofuran (THF) at different concentrations. Aqueous mixtures are characterized by a highly heterogeneous structure where water clusters coexist with an underlying nano-segregation of main chains and side groups of the polymeric matrix. THF molecules are homogeneously distributed among the polymeric nano-domains for concentrations of one THF molecule/monomer or lower. A more heterogeneous situation is found for higher THF amounts, but without evidences for solvent clusters. In THF-mixtures, we observe a remarkable reduction of the glass-transition temperature which is enhanced with increasing amount of solvent but seems to reach saturation at high THF concentrations. Adding THF markedly reduces the activation energy of the polymer β-relaxation. The presence of THF molecules seemingly hinders a slow component of this process which is active in the dry state. The aqueous mixtures present a strikingly broad glass-transition feature, revealing a highly heterogeneous behavior in agreement with the structural study. Regarding the solvent dynamics, deep in the glassy state all data can be described by an Arrhenius temperature dependence with a rather similar activation energy. However, the values of the characteristic times are about three orders of magnitude smaller for THF than for water. Water dynamics display a crossover toward increasingly higher apparent activation energies in the region of the onset of the glass transition, supporting its interpretation as a consequence of the freezing of the structural relaxation of the surrounding matrix. The absence of such a crossover (at least in the wide dynamic window here accessed) in THF is attributed to the lack of cooperativity effects in the relaxation of these molecules within the polymeric matrix. We have investigated a mixture of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) (70 wt.% PDMAEMA/30 wt.% THF) by combining dielectric spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) on a labelled sample, focusing on the dynamics of the THF molecules. Two independent processes have been identified. The "fast" one has been qualified as due to an internal motion of the THF ring leading to hydrogen displacements of about 3 Å with rather broadly distributed activation energies. The "slow" process is characterized by an Arrhenius-like temperature dependence of the characteristic time which persists over more than 9 orders of magnitude in time. The QENS results evidence the confined nature of this process, determining a size of about 8 Å for the volume within which THF hydrogens' motions are restricted. In a complementary way, we have also investigated the structural features of the sample. This study suggests that THF molecules are well dispersed among side-groups nano-domains in the polymer matrix, ruling out a significant presence of clusters of solvent. Such a good dispersion, together with a rich mobility of the local environment, would prevent cooperativity effects to develop for the structural relaxation of solvent molecules, frustrating thereby the emergence of Vogel-Fulcher-like behavior, at least in the whole temperature interval investigated. We explore new routes for characterizing the Debye-like and α relaxation in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (2E1H) monoalcohol by using low frequency dielectric techniques including thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) techniques and isothermal depolarization current methods. In this way, we have improved the resolution of the overlapped processes making it possible the analysis of the data in terms of a mode composition as expected for a chain-like response. Furthermore the explored ultralow frequencies enabled to study dynamics at relatively low temperatures close to the glass transition (Tg). Results show, on the one hand, that Debye-like and a relaxation timescales dramatically approach to each other upon decreasing temperature to Tg. On the other hand, the analysis of partial polarization TSDC data confirms the single exponential character of the Debye-like relaxation in 2E1H and rules out the presence of Rouse type modes in the scenario of a chain-like response. Finally, on crossing the glass transition, the Debye-like relaxation shows non-equilibrium effects which are further emphasized by aging treatment and would presumably emerge as a result of the arrest of the structural relaxation below Tg. By means of electric force microscopy, composition depth profiles were measured with nanometric resolution for a series of fluorinated networks. By mapping the dielectric permittivity along a line going from the surface to the bulk, we were able to experimentally access to the fluorine concentration profile. Obtained data show composition gradient lengths ranging from 30 nm to 80 nm in the near surface area for samples containing from 0.5 to 5 wt. % F, respectively. In contrast, no gradients of concentration were detected in bulk. This method has several advantages over other techniques because it allows profiling directly on a sectional cut of the sample. By combining the obtained results with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, we were also able to quantify F/C ratio as a function of depth with nanoscale resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spontaneous thermodynamically driven densification, the so-called physical aging, of glassy poly(mehtyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and its nanocomposites with silica has been described by means of the free volume holes diffusion model. This mechanism is able to account for the partial decoupling between physical aging and segmental dynamics of PMMA in nancomposites. The former has been found to be accelerated in PMMA/silica nanocomposites in comparison to 'bulk' PMMA, whereas no difference between the segmental dynamics of bulk PMMA and that of the same polymer in nanocomposites has been observed. Thus, the rate of physical aging also depends on the amount of interface polymer/nanoparticles, where free volume holes disappear after diffusing through the polymer matrix. We report a joint analysis of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on cis-trans-1,4-poly(butadiene) (c-t-1,4-PBD). Phenomenological analysis of the orthopositronium lifetime τ3 - T dependence by linear fitting reveals four characteristic PALS temperatures: Tb1G=0.63TgPALS, TgPALS, Tb1L=1.22TgPALS, and Tb2L=1.52TgPALS. Slight bend effects in the glassy and supercooled liquid states are related to the fast or slow secondary β process, from neutron scattering, respectively, the latter being connected with the trans-isomers. In addition, the first bend effect in the supercooled liquid coincides with a deviation of the slow effective secondary βeff relaxation related to the cis-isomers from low-T Arrhenius behavior to non-Arrhenius one and correlates with the onset of the primary α process from BDS. The second plateau effect in the liquid state occurs when τ3 becomes commensurable with the structural relaxation time τα(Tb2). It is also approximately related to its crossover from non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius regime in the combined BDS and NMR data. Finally, the combined BDS and NMR structural relaxation data, when analyzed in terms of the two-order parameter (TOP) model, suggest the influence of solidlike domains on both the annihilation behavior and the local and segmental chain mobility in the supercooled liquid. All these findings indicate the influence of the dynamic heterogeneity in both the primary and secondary relaxations due to the cis-trans isomerism in c-t-1,4-PBD and their impact into the PALS response. The behavior of water dynamics confined in hydrated calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel has been investigated using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS; 10-2-106 Hz) in the low-temperature range (110-250 K). Different water contents in C-S-H gel were explored (from 6 to 15 wt%) where water remains amorphous for all the studied temperatures. Three relaxation processes were found by BDS (labeled 1 to 3 from the fastest to the slowest), two of them reported here for the first time. We show that a strong change in the dielectric relaxation of C-S-H gel occurs with increasing hydration, especially at a hydration level in which a monolayer of water around the basic units of cement materials is predicted by different structural models. Below this hydration level both processes 2 and 3 have an Arrhenius temperature dependence. However, at higher hydration level, a non-Arrhenius behavior temperature dependence for process 3 over the whole accessible temperature range and, a crossover from low-temperature Arrhenius to high-temperature non-Arrhenius behavior for process 2 are observed. The relaxation dynamic of ribose and deoxyribose water solutions at different concentrations has been studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry in the temperature range of 150–250 K. Two relaxation processes are observed for all the hydration levels; the slower (process I) is related to the relaxation of the whole solution whereas the faster one (process II) is associated with the reorientation of water molecules in the mixture. As for other polymeric water solutions, dielectric data for process II indicate the existence of a critical water concentration above which water mobility is less restricted. According to these results, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements of the same sugar solutions showed an increment in the intensity of the OH stretching sub-band close to 3200 cm-1 as water content increases. Plasticizers are usually added to polymers to give them the desired flexibility and processability by changing the dynamical properties of the polymer chains. It is therefore important to give a quantitative description about how the dynamic behavior of a given polymer is modified by the incorporation of a second component. We analyze in this work, by means of dielectric spectroscopy, the dynamics of poly(vinyl acetate)/diethyl phthalate mixtures, at different concentrations, over a broad range of frequency, pressure, and temperature. The dynamics of these particular mixtures show only one main relaxation process contrarily to what is observed in athermal miscible polymer mixtures. From the dielectric spectra the maximum relaxation time as a function of pressure and temperature was obtained and analyzed. We studied the pressure dependence of the glass transition temperature as well as the fragility of both the neat components and the mixtures at different concentrations (on the rich polymer range). Finally, the experimental data were rationalized within the framework of an Adam–Gibbs (AG) based approach recently developed [G. A. Schwartz et al., J. Chem. Phys. 127, 154907 (2007)]. The model, originally developed for athermal blends, is here modified to take into account the non-negligible interaction between polymer and plasticizer. Using a simple mathematical formalism, we show that temperature dependent nonexponential relaxation found in glass-forming liquids and amorphous polymers, often resulting in a decrease in the stretching exponent when decreasing temperature, can be suitably described assuming the combination of an intrinsic stretched response and the existence of temperature independent heterogeneities. The effect of the latter is incorporated by assuming a Gaussian distribution of Vogel temperatures. Comparison with experimental data of a large number of glass formers showed that this approach is able to quasiquantitatively describes the temperature dependence of the stretching exponent using the width of the distribution as the single fitting parameter. According to this approach, the rapidity of the decrease in the stretching exponent with decreasing temperature depends not only on the magnitude of the standard deviation of Vogel temperatures but also on the value of the intrinsic stretching exponent and on the fragility of the glass former. The dynamics of homogenous polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB54)/toluene mixtures have been investigated by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The mixture presents dynamical heterogeneity, alike miscible polymer blends, which is manifested with the presence of two relaxational processes. The relatively slow one has been attributed to the motion of PCB54 in the mixture, whereas the relatively fast one was related to the toluene dynamics in the mixture. These results have been interpreted according to the self-concentration concept, first introduced to describe the dynamics of miscible polymer blends, which relies on the limited size of the cooperative length scale in glass-forming liquids. The self-concentration concept has been incorporated in the Adam–Gibbs theory of the glass transition relating the characteristic relaxation time and the length scale for structural relaxation to the configurational entropy. This allowed the determination of the cooperative length scale of PCB54 and toluene both in mixture and alone through the fitting of a single parameter, namely, that connecting the cooperative length scale to the configurational entropy. This length scale resulted to be in the range of 1–2 nm for all systems. Finally, the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of toluene induced by the selective freezing in of PCB54 has been examined and its relation to the Johari–Goldstein relaxation of pure toluene was critically discussed. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry measurements have been performed to study the molecular dynamics poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) and its water solutions in a wide range of concentrations (0 wt ≤wc≤55 wt %) and in the temperature range from 140 to 500 K. The dry material was completely characterized showing the presence of two relaxations in the supercooled state. The slow one has the characteristics of a Johari-Goldstein-type relaxation. On the other hand, the low temperature water dynamics in the mixtures evidences a prominent loss peak due to the reorientation of water molecules inside the polymer matrix for all the hydration levels. We show that the relaxation times are almost water concentration (wc) independent from wc>20 wt % suggesting that this dynamical process is dominated by water-water interactions. In addition, the temperature dependence of the water relaxation times exhibits a crossover from non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius behavior during cooling throughout the glass transition range, which has been interpreted as due to the constrains imposed by the rigid polymer matrix on the water molecules dynamics. We present in this work a new model to describe the component segmental dynamics in miscible polymers blends as a function of pressure, temperature, and composition. The model is based on a combination of the Adam-Gibbs (AG) theory and the concept of the chain connectivity. In this paper we have extended our previous approach [D. Cangialosi et al. J. Chem. Phys. 123, 144908 (2005)] to include the effects of pressure in the component dynamics of miscible polymer blends. The resulting model has been tested on poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME)/polystyrene (PS) blends at different concentrations and in the temperature range where the system is in equilibrium. The results show an excellent agreement between the experimental and calculated relaxation times using only one fitting parameter. Once this parameter is known the model allows calculating the size of the relevant length scale where the segmental relaxation of the dielectrically active component takes place, i.e., the so called cooperative rearrangement region (CRR) in the AG framework. The mobility of isolated polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB54) in 1,4-polybutadiene (PB) has been investigated by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The aim was to provide new insights about the effect of the environment on the dynamics of PCB54. The authors’ results indicate that PCB54 structural dynamics is neither independent of the PB matrix nor slaved to the matrix itself. The authors interpret these results as a consequence of the limited size of cooperatively rearranging regions (CRRs) involved in PCB54 structural relaxation possessing an effective concentration different from the macroscopic one. This implies a non-negligible influence of “self-concentration,” already proven for the component segmental dynamics in polymer blends, also in the relaxation of binary mixtures involving low molecular weight glass formers. This allowed the evaluation of the size of CRR, which was about 1 nm for PCB54 in PB. This means that the cooperativity extends over the first shell around PCB54 molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the influence of plasticization on the microscopic dynamics of a glass-forming polymer. For this purpose we studied polyvinylchloride (PVC) with and without the commercially used plasticizer dioctylphthalate (DOP). We used dielectric spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering employing the neutron spin echo (NSE) technique. For both kinds of spectra the α relaxation could be consistently described by a model involving a distribution of individual relaxations of the Kohlrausch type. In contrast to earlier studies it turned out that an asymmetric distribution is necessary to fit the data at the lower temperatures investigated here. The shape parameters of the distribution (width, skewness) for PVC and PVC/DOP turned out to coincide when the characteristic relaxation times were the same. This means that the plasticizer only induces a remapping of the temperature dependence of the α relaxation. Comparison of NSE spectra S(Q,t)/S(Q) at different scattering vectors Q gave the result that the slowing down at the structure factor peak Qmax is surprisingly small for PVC while it is in the normal range for PVC/DOP. The relaxation dynamics of dipropylene glycol and tripropylene glycol (nPG—n=2,3) water solutions on the nPG-rich side has been studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry in the temperature range of 130–280 K. Two relaxation processes are observed for all the hydration levels; the slower process (I) is related to the α relaxation of the solution whereas the faster one (II) is associated with the reorientation of water molecules in the mixture. Dielectric data for process (II) at temperatures between 150 and 200 K indicate the existence of a critical water concentration (xc) below which water mobility is highly restricted. Below xc, nPG-water domains drive the dielectric signal whereas above xc, water-water domains dominate the dielectric response at low temperatures. The results also show that process (II) at low temperatures is due to local motions of water molecules in the glassy frozen matrix. Additionally, we will show that the glass transition temperatures (Tg) for aqueous PG, 2PG, and 3PG solutions do not extrapolate to ∼136 K, regardless of the extrapolation method. Instead, we find that the extrapolated Tg value for water from these solutions lies in the neighborhood of 165 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have recently proposed [D. Cangialosi et al., J. Chem. Phys. 123, 144908 (2005)] an extension of the Adam-Gibbs [J. Chem. Phys. 43, 139 (1965)] theory, combined with the concept of self-concentration, to describe the temperature dependence of the relaxation time for the component segmental dynamics in miscible polymer blends. Thus, we were able to obtain the dynamics of each component in the blend starting from the knowledge of the dynamic and thermodynamic data of the pure polymers, with a single fitting parameter (α) which had to be obtained from the fitting of the experimental data. In the present work we demonstrate that this model is also suitable to describe the polymer segmental dynamics in concentrated polymer solutions. From this result we have developed a new route for determining the value of the α parameter associated with any given polymer. Once this value is known for the two components of a possible polymer blend, our model for polymer blends dynamics becomes fully predictive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have connected the dynamic fragility, namely, the steepness of the relaxation-time variation upon temperature reduction, to the excess entropy and heat capacity of a large number of glass-forming polymers. The connection was obtained in a natural way from the Adam-Gibbs equation, relating the structural relaxation time to the configurational entropy. We find a clear correlation for a group of polymers. For another group of polymers, for which this correlation does not work, we emphasize the role of relaxation processes unrelated to the α process in affecting macroscopic thermodynamic properties. Once the residual excess entropy at the Vogel temperature is removed from the total excess entropy, the correlation between dynamic fragility and thermodynamic properties is reestablished. We provide a new approach to describe the component segmental dynamics of miscible polymer blends combining the concept of chain connectivity, expressed in terms of the self-concentration, and the Adam-Gibbs model. The results show an excellent agreement between the prediction of our approach and the experimental data. The self-concentrations obtained yield length scales between 1 and 3.2 nm depending on the temperature, the flexibility of the polymer, expressed in terms of the Kuhn segment, and its concentration in the blends, at temperatures above the glass transition range of the blend. We have investigated the dynamics of phenylene rings in glassy bisphenol-A (BPA) polycarbonate (PC) by means of quasielastic neutron scattering. Taking advantage of selective deuteration of the samples, we have studied the incoherent scattering of hydrogens in phenylene rings on the one hand, and on the other hand the coherent quasielastic scattering of all the atoms in the sample. Two different types of neutron spectrometers, time of flight and backscattering, were used in order to cover a wide dynamic range, which extends from microscopic (∼10-13 s) to mesoscopic (∼10-9 s) times. Moreover, neutron-diffraction experiments with polarization analysis were carried out in order to characterize the structural features, and the relative coherent and incoherent contributions of the samples investigated. In contrast with previous studies of phenylene ring dynamics in BPA polysulfone performed by us also by neutron scattering, phenylene rings in BPA PC exhibit an “extra” motion in addition to those found for BPA polysulfone’s phenylene rings. This extra motion of the rings in PC perfectly correlates with the main carbonate group motion followed by dielectric spectroscopy and allows us to (i) consistently interprete the PC’s γ relaxation in terms of two different motions; and (ii) experimentally confirm the relation between the motion of phenylene rings and carbonate groups within BPA PC formerly predicted by computational methods. We have investigated the dynamics of poly(vinly acetate) using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (DS) covering over 14 decades in frequency up to 20 GHz and high-resolution quasielastic neutron-scattering (QENS) technique. The dielectric results have been interpreted in terms of the phenomenological Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts [G. Williams and D. C. Watts, Trans. Faraday Soc. 66, 80 (1970); F. Alvarez, A. Alegría, and J. Colmenero, Phys. Rev. B 47, 125 (1993)] description. Because of the wide frequency range covered by DS, it provides a precise determination of dynamics over a wide temperature range and it revealed a crossover in polymer dynamics at 387 K through different dielectric parameters, viz., characteristic times, asymmetric shape parameter, and dielectric strength. Moreover, shape parameter is found to be higher in comparison to other typical polymeric systems. The characteristic relaxation times observed by QENS displayed an anomalous dependence of momentum transfer, indicating the possible existence of heterogeneities in the system even at the high temperatures. In addition, spin-lattice relaxation times, T1, were found to be decoupled from dielectric characteristic times. Based on these results, a model was proposed to account for heterogeneities where we consider coexistence of different regions with standard polymeric behavior but with different characteristic times, leading to a distribution of relaxation times. The model is found to account for the anomalous behavior and an inherent shape parameter is found to account for the shape of α relaxation. This model is also found to predict the T variation of T1 characteristic time scales at all temperatures. The temperature dependence of the α-relaxation time out of equilibrium has been investigated by means of dielectric relaxation in a series of fragile glass formers including several polymers. The influence of physical aging on this behavior has also been studied. The experimental results have been quantitatively compared with the predictions of the Adam–Gibbs equation. It has been found that, whereas for small molecule glass formers the experimental values of the apparent activation energy agree quite well with the prediction of the Adam–Gibbs equation, for polymers the experimental activation energy values are systematically higher. Moreover, whereas for small molecule glass formers the experimental values of the apparent activation energy remains essentially unaffected by physical aging, for polymers a pronounced reduction of the experimental apparent activation energy is observed. These results are found to be consistent with the Adam–Gibbs equation if a significant temperature variation of the configurational entropy in the investigated temperature range would occur for nonannealed polymers, being the possible variation hardly noticeable for the small molecules. With this assumption, all the obtained results would support the validity of the Adam–Gibbs equation for describing the temperature dependence of the time scale of the α-relaxation also out of equilibrium, at least for fragile glass formers. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Starting from the well-known CONTIN algorithm/program [S. W. Provencher, Comput. Phys. Commun. 27, 213 (1982)] for the calculation of inverse Laplace transformations, we have developed a new method for obtaining distributions of relaxation times out of frequency relaxation spectra. The method has been tested under several different restrictive conditions, many of them harder than those of actual real experiments and has proved to be successful. Moreover, to our knowledge, it gives the best power resolution ever referenced and its ability to undergo the problem of noise seems to be better than those of other algorithms used to treat the kind of ill-conditioned problems presented here. Our program can be directly applied on the data without the need of performing any interpolation nor extrapolation, which could somehow bias the results, especially in the extrapolation case. Some practical applications of the method are shown for the analysis of the dielectric relaxation spectra of both, a bulk homopolymer polyvinyl chloride and a liquid crystalline polymer. The method is also generalized to deal with different problems where the physical mechanisms involved or the technical procedure suggest to use distributions of non-Debye processes. © 1995 American Institute of Physics. In this paper, we introduce a method of analysis of the dielectric relaxation data, which results to be very suitable for studying the coalescence of the α and β processes in the time domain. We show that, at least in the case of the glass-forming liquid BCDE (bis-phenol-C-dimethylether), the coalescence process can be well described by assuming that both, the α and β processes, behave as statistically independent processes. This simple assumption allows to describe the coalescence range of the two processes by extrapolating the low temperature behavior (where both processes are well separated), contrary to more classical approaches in which one needs to introduce a temperature at which the mechanism of the β process changes. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. We report a joint analysis of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on cis-trans-1,4-poly(butadiene) (c-t-1,4-PBD). Phenomenological analysis of the orthopositronium lifetime τ(3)-T dependence by linear fitting reveals four characteristic PALS temperatures: T(b1)(G)=0.63T(g)(PALS), T(g)(PALS), T(b1)(L)=1.22T(g)(PALS), and T(b2)(L)=1.52T(g)(PALS). Slight bend effects in the glassy and supercooled liquid states are related to the fast or slow secondary β process, from neutron scattering, respectively, the latter being connected with the trans-isomers. In addition, the first bend effect in the supercooled liquid coincides with a deviation of the slow effective secondary β(eff) relaxation related to the cis-isomers from low-T Arrhenius behavior to non-Arrhenius one and correlates with the onset of the primary α process from BDS. The second plateau effect in the liquid state occurs when τ(3) becomes commensurable with the structural relaxation time τ(α)(T(b2)). It is also approximately related to its crossover from non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius regime in the combined BDS and NMR data. Finally, the combined BDS and NMR structural relaxation data, when analyzed in terms of the two-order parameter (TOP) model, suggest the influence of solidlike domains on both the annihilation behavior and the local and segmental chain mobility in the supercooled liquid. All these findings indicate the influence of the dynamic heterogeneity in both the primary and secondary relaxations due to the cis-trans isomerism in c-t-1,4-PBD and their impact into the PALS response.

We have investigated the dynamics of phenylene rings in glassy bisphenol-A (BPA) polycarbonate (PC) by means of quasielastic neutron scattering. Taking advantage of selective deuteration of the samples, we have studied the incoherent scattering of hydrogens in phenylene rings on the one hand, and on the other hand the coherent quasielastic scattering of all the atoms in the sample. Two different types of neutron spectrometers, time of flight and backscattering, were used in order to cover a wide dynamic range, which extends from microscopic (approximately 10(-13) s) to mesoscopic (approximately 10(-9) s) times. Moreover, neutron-diffraction experiments with polarization analysis were carried out in order to characterize the structural features, and the relative coherent and incoherent contributions of the samples investigated. In contrast with previous studies of phenylene ring dynamics in BPA polysulfone performed by us also by neutron scattering, phenylene rings in BPA PC exhibit an "extra" motion in addition to those found for BPA polysulfone's phenylene rings. This extra motion of the rings in PC perfectly correlates with the main carbonate group motion followed by dielectric spectroscopy and allows us to (i) consistently interpret the PC's gamma relaxation in terms of two different motions; and (ii) experimentally confirm the relation between the motion of phenylene rings and carbonate groups within BPA PC formerly predicted by computational methods.

We have investigated the dynamics of poly(vinly acetate) using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (DS) covering over 14 decades in frequency up to 20 GHz and high-resolution quasielastic neutron-scattering (QENS) technique. The dielectric results have been interpreted in terms of the phenomenological Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts [G. Williams and D. C. Watts, Trans. Faraday Soc. 66, 80 (1970); F. Alvarez, A. Alegria, and J. Colmenero, Phys. Rev. B 47, 125 (1993)] description. Because of the wide frequency range covered by DS, it provides a precise determination of dynamics over a wide temperature range and it revealed a crossover in polymer dynamics at 387 K through different dielectric parameters, viz., characteristic times, asymmetric shape parameter, and dielectric strength. Moreover, shape parameter is found to be higher in comparison to other typical polymeric systems. The characteristic relaxation times observed by QENS displayed an anomalous dependence of momentum transfer, indicating the possible existence of heterogeneities in the system even at the high temperatures. In addition, spin-lattice relaxation times, T(1), were found to be decoupled from dielectric characteristic times. Based on these results, a model was proposed to account for heterogeneities where we consider coexistence of different regions with standard polymeric behavior but with different characteristic times, leading to a distribution of relaxation times. The model is found to account for the anomalous behavior and an inherent shape parameter is found to account for the shape of alpha relaxation. This model is also found to predict the T variation of T(1) characteristic time scales at all temperatures. The origin of the heterogeneous domains is believed to lie in the microstructure of polymer chains.

We have investigated the dynamics of phenylene rings in a glassy polysulfone (bisphenol-A-polysulfone) by means of quasielastic neutron scattering. Nowadays it is well known that these molecular motions are directly connected with the mechanical properties of engineering thermoplastics in general. The particular system investigated by us has the advantage that by selective deuteration of the methyl groups, the neutron scattering measured is dominated by the incoherent contribution from the protons in the phenylene rings. In this way, the dynamics of such molecular groups can be experimentally isolated. Two different types of neutron spectrometers: time of flight and backscattering, were used in order to cover a wide dynamic range, which extends from microscopic (10(-13) s) to mesoscopic (10(-9) s) times. Moreover, neutron diffraction experiments with polarization analysis were also carried out in order to characterize the structural features of the sample investigated. Fast oscillations of increasing amplitude with temperature and pi-flips are identified for phenylene rings motions. Due to the structural disorder characteristic of the amorphous state, both molecular motions display a broad distribution of relaxation times, which spreads over several orders of magnitude. Based on the results obtained, we propose a model for phenylene rings dynamics, which combines the two kinds of molecular motions identified.
