We have been investigating zeolite synthesis from paper sludge (PS) ashes. This technique is essential from the viewpoint of recycling of wasting materials. In our previous study, the PS ashes from 20 paper mills in Fuji area of Shizuoka Pref. were examined on suitability for starting materials in the zeolite synthesis, and they were classified into 4 types of compositional ranges in terms of talc-kaolinite-calcite composition ; that is, ranges (A) and (B) were suitable for the zeolite synthesis and ranges (C) and (D) were not suitable. In this study, we selected representative 4 mills that had discharged PS corresponding to the above 4 types of compositional ranges, and the chemical and mineralogical compositions of PS from these 4 mills were analyzed for 5 days. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained. The PS samples from the mills that had initially discharged PS belonged in the ranges (A) and (B) did not change into the ranges (C) and (D) for the period of 5 days. The samples belonged in (A) and (B) showed again being suitable for the zeolite synthesis.PS discharged from a paper mill that makes products including a lot of kaolinite is suitable for the zeolite synthesis. However. PS containing too much calcite is not suitable.

Paper mills have used titanium dioxide to generate opacity in high quality paper and paperboard for many years. Dry anatase pigments were used at first since this was the only technology available. Invention of the chloride rutile process created opportunities for new levels of performance in the paper industry. Commercial rutile slurry was introduced over 25 years ago to the North American marketand has been continually improved. Over 95% of the titanium dioxide used in this market is commercial slurry. More recently the use of stable paper slurries has been growing in both Europe and Japan.Commercial rutile slurry offers performance advantages over slurry produced by the paper mill. High shear dispersion equipment allows optimization of the particle size and increased light scattering. Opacity gains of 10-12% have been demonstrated in the lab. Mill trials have confirmed even higher performance gains.Anatase pigments have a lower refractive index and generally larger particle size. Both attributes will contribute to lower scattering performance than a rutile pigment. Mill trials have demonstrated over 20% reduction in pigment use when switching from an anatase pigment to rutile.Handling and storage of slurry products is not difficult. Proper design of the equipment will insure trouble free operation and high product quality. Correct addition to the paper process will maintain the high performance of the pigment.

The DIA-BIOFRINGE, an aerobic biofilm system which uses strings with ribbons fixed to the metal frames and swaying in the water are used as biofilm media, has many advantages such as no backwash operation required, quick startup, and flexibilities in reactor design. TOKAI PULP & PAPER CO., LTD. recently introduced the DIA-BIOFRINGE into their wastewater treatment plant to treat paper mill wastewater. In the demonstration test carried out prior to its construction, a stable BOD removal have been obtained at the BOD backfill volumetric loading of 1. 5 kg-BOD/m3. day. Furthermore, it was confirmed at the test that preliminary SS removal, usually necessary in ordinary biofilm systems, are unnecessary. Thus, the introduction of the DIA-BIOFRINGE is proved to be very advantageous from the fact that the system is totally simplified and small investment in auxiliary units of the system.

In 2002, the quantities of dioxins in pulp and paper mill effluents, stack gases and ashes must conform to the tighter National Standards. The permissible limits given in total TEQ are 10 pg/L for the mill effluent, 0.1 to 10ng/Nm3 for the stack gas of waste incineration and 3ng/g for the ash. The limits for the stack gas are classified by the type of furnace. The total TEQ include 7 PCDDs, 10 PCDFs and 12 co-planar PCBs. The trace analyses of such many dioxins are so complicated that it seems to be difficult to understand the details of the analytical results. This paper describes the analytical procedure of dioxins and several characteristics of the results.

Life cycle environmental loads for woodfree paper containing nonwood pulp or deinked pulp were investigated (Environmental loads: CO2, SOx, NOx, and incineration ash). In this study, inventory data concerning wood pulp and deinked pulp were collected at Mitsubishi paper mill in Hachinohe. With regard to the inventory for nonwood pulp, data for bagasse pulp produced in Colombia and data for kenaf pulp produced in Japan were used. Environmental loads for woodfree paper made from the mixture of wood pulp and nonwood pulp or deinked pulp was compared with those for woodfree paper made from 100% wood pulp.CO2 emission for life cycle of woodfree paper containing bagasse pulp (except CO2 emission from the pith burning) was as large as that of woodfree paper made from 100% wood pulp, because the pith contained in bagasse may be regarded as the agricultural by-product. Since kenaf pulp was produced at the small pulping plant that has no energy recovery system from black liquor, CO2 emission for woodfree paper containing kenaf pulp was larger than that of other kinds of woodfree paper. In case of deinked pulp, the increase in content of deinked pulp in woodfree paper increased the consumption of fossil fuel, resulted in the increase of CO2 emission from fossil fuel. SOx emission for woodfree paper containing deinked pulp was smaller than that of other kinds of woodfree paper. There were observed little differences in NOx emission for these four kinds of woodfree paper. Incineration ash emission for woodfree paper was almost caused by coal used in the process of the woodfree paper production and by waste paper burning in the incineration process. For more detailed study, it is desirable to analyze a life cycle inventory by taking the land use for wood afforestation or non-wood cultivation and the value of agricultural by-products into account.

The productivity of a pulp and paper mill is dependent on the quality of wood chips entering the mill. Most kraft mills operate with a “bottleneck” and this is typically the recovery boiler. For these mills, using chips with “x%” higher pulp yield can result in a “3x%” increase in output of paper. This can represent a substantial increase in productivity and potential profit for the mill.In the case of plantation Eucalyptus wood, the quality of the chips from harvested trees is dependent on many factors, such as the climate and seed quality. but it is also dependent on the age of the trees at harvest. In most cases, allowing trees to grow for a longer time before harvest will cause the pulp yield to increase. These older trees would, therefore, be of great interest to pulp and paper mills. Unfortunately, the plantation owner may be reluctant to supply older trees as delaying harvesting will cost money. This paper will examine the conflict of interest between the pulp mill operator and the plantation owner. A mathematical model has been constructed which enables calculation of the impact to be calculated of varying the age at harvest on the overall economics for the whole fibre chain, “from seed to paper”. Input data used in the model was sourced from Eucalyptus plantations in Tasmania that are supplying Japanese integrated fine paper mills. It is proposed that, if a pulp and paper mill is going to use plantation chips, the management at the mill should take an active interest in the management principles used by the tree grower.

In 1990, mass media released the news saying the dioxins were found from the paper mill sewage water. Since then, for these 10 years, many laws and regulations which affect the environmental measures of the pulp and paper industries especially regarding their bleached kraft pulp production are introduced. These laws and regulations include Offensive Odor Control Law, Law Concerning Area Wide Total Pollutant Load Control of COD. Self-management of Hazardous Air Pollutants and recently introduced Law Concerning Special Measures against Dioxins. This report summarizes the measures taken by pulp and paper industries to deal with those laws and regulations and also suggests the future measures to be taken by pulp and paper industries.

VSEP is a high performance liquid/solids separation system capable of attaining high flow rate over conventional crossflow membrane system. It is because that the filter pack moves in a vigorous vibratory motion tangent to the face of the membranes which prevent the membranes from fouling and plugging.Application of VSEP were studied for paper mill effluent of white water and color coat waste water. For white water, permeate water quality was similar level to make-up water for recycle in the plant, although it needs periodical chemical cleaning which interval is considered to be prolonged. For the experiment of color coat concentration, VSEP was able to concentrate up to 40% suspended solid and which result shows that the recovered color coat is able to be reused in the plant and also has benefit such as to reduce the load of waste water treatment facility to which the color coat waste stream is large loading.

Many efforts have been made to reduce the influence on aquatic organisms by pulp and paper mill effluents. In Scandinavia the new assessment program has been started to evaluate a current state of the biological impact since 1997. Also, in Canada the Aquatic Environmental Effect Monitoring has been carried out in the second phase of the program (EEM Cycle 2).Since 1996 Japan Pulp and Paper Research Institute (JPRI) has studied the effects of the effluents from 20 mills in Japan. The biological and chemical characterization confirmed that any effluent had no acute toxicity, however, the chronic toxicities, especially the effects on the reproduction of Ceriodaphnia dubia, were found to vary substantially with the mill processes. Such biological effects of the mill effluents did not depend on AOX, but the total organic compounds indicating as COD/BOD.The Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE), the induction of Mixed Function Oxygenases (MFO), and the bioaccumulation of EOX were investigated to elucidate the environmental affection of Japanese pulp and paper mill effluent.

The pulp and paper industry in Japan has made great efforts to control water pollution by introducing new effluent treatment systems and oxygen bleaching. The industry is now entering a new era in which harmony with environment and preservation of ecosystems is much more important than before.JPRI is conducting the research program to evaluate biological impacts of pulp and paper mill effluents using fish, waterfleas, green alga, sea urchins and luminescent bacteria as test organisms. In the laboratory experiments most effluent samples showed sublethal effects upon aquatic life but no acute lethality to fish. Analytical study is expected to find the relations between the biological impacts and the effluent components. The research program includes studies on biochemical indicator (MFO), mutagenicity evaluation and dioxin analysis.

The increased use of recycled paper raises new problems that require new solutions. The problems are magnified additionally if the deinking plant and the paper machines are closed to a high degree. Carry-over of chemicals from the deinking plant to the paper machine is an example.Raisio Chemicals have, in cooperation with Abo University and Braviken Paper Mill, developed a new and simple method for quantitative and qualitative analysis of fatty acids and saponified fatty acids in paper, pulp and white water. With this method it is possible to study how saponified fatty acids and rosins are separated in various process stages in a deinking plant.

MFOs (mixed function oxygenases) are a family of enzymes induced when organisms are exposed to a variety of xenobiotics. MFO assay has been utilized to evaluate the toxic potency of mill effluents. It has also been demonstrated that, particularly, pulp and paper mill effluents induce MFOs of various organisms. We have recently developed a method to detect the induction of MFOs using chick embryos as a test organism. In this report, we describe the effect of total effluents of pulp and paper mills in Japan on the MFOs induction. The mill effluents were directly injected into chick embryos. The chick embryos were incubated for 48 hours, after which microsomal fractions of liver were prepared for the EROD (7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase) assay.Pulp and paper mill effluents induced the MFOs up to 1.6-fold compared with control embryos. Similarly, approximately 1.7-fold induction was observed for the EROD activity in carps exposed to effluents at mill sites. These values are significantly lower than those obtained in other countries, suggesting that the pulp and paper mill effluents in Japan may not contain a significant amount of toxic chemicals or the inducers for the MFOs.

As the enforcement of regulation of noise pollution control become more effective and the public concern about noise nuisance is aroused, troubles in noise pollution are more often caused recently by paper mill plant. In this paper, the basic mechanism of noise generation by cooling tower, pump, roof fan, fan and root blow, of its noise are explained. The discrepancies between the basic engineering countermeasures on noise pollution and the result of the actual measurement are studied. As the actual example of noise insulation covers, silencers and structural arrangement for vibration isolation are explained.Root brows play a big part in the pulp and paper plant integral step in the process of making paper are the felt filters used to draw water from the paper slurry. Typically, multiple root blow are manifolded together, providing the required flow rate and a measure of redundancy. These are inherently noisy at the plant property line by noise radiating from the exhaust stacks. This multifunction passive silencer would have no problem.

When Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora) was used as a main resource for groundwood pulp (GP), a group of triglycerides (TG) was identified as one of the most troublesome components which caused pitch problems in paper making process. As reported previously, lipase could hydrolyze TG to less sticky components and prevent pitch deposition.Lipase (Resinase A 2 X) produced in industrial scale from Aspergillus sp. at Novo Nordisk A/S was selected for this purpose from several lipases. The effect of enzyme dosage and profiles of pH and temperature on hydrolysis of TG were investigated in laboratory scale. As a result, more than 70% hydrolysis of TG was achieved at 500ppm dosage to GP. The enzyme showed the stable activity in the condition of 60°C, at pH 4 and 70°C, at pH 7. Based on the laboratory results, the first trial was carried out in Isinomaki mill unbleached GP fiber line of Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. The mill trial has demonstrated a dramatic reduction in pitch problems as well as several other unexpected advantages. The fresh wood ratio was increased up to 50% in Ishinomaki mill.Nippon Paper Industries has been employing the enzymatic pitch control technology in paper making process for more than 3 years at unbleached lines. Recently lipase (Resinase A 2 X) is successfully applied to bleaching tower of bleached GP line at Ishinomaki mill. This technology has been successfully introduced to Daishowa Paper MFG. Co., Ltd. Fuji Mill and Hokuetsu Paper Mills., Ltd. Niigata Mill.A paper mill can obtain following advantages by introducing lipase pitch control technology. a) The number of defects of paper and amount of pitch are decreased. The runnability of paper machine is increased. b) The frequency of cleaning machine is reduced. c) The dosage of chemicals, such as fine talc, cationic polymers, is dramatically reduced. d) Seasoning (storage in the woodyard) costs are saved (eg. wages, land rent, interest) e) The fresh wood ratio is increased. It results in higher brightness and reduces the cost of hydrogen peroxide for bleaching of GP. f) Increasing of dynamic friction coefficient (DFC) of paper saves expensive amorphous silica gel (white carbon).

The discharge of pulp and paper mill effluent into the Somass estuary, Port Alberni, did not significantly affect nearshore utilization by juvenile chinook salmon. However, major changes occured in the diet of fish captured close to the discharge. In-situ bioassays, preference-avoidance experiments and gill net data revealed that salmonids could only utilize the estuarine surface waters and not the deeper waters containing low levels of dissolved oxygen. At Port Mellon, the discharge of pulp mill effluent affected the use of nearshore areas by fish. In-situ experimentation determined that the surface waters proximal to the pulp mill outfalls were acutely toxic to juvenile salmonids which effected avoidance reactions.
