Purpose: Our study aimed to make a bibliometric analysis on Sjögren's syndrome-related dry eye disease (SS-DED), explore its potential research hotspots, and provide critical information for future research interest and undeveloped topics in this field, which can benefit clinicians and researchers., Methods: We extracted all publications relating to SS-DED from 2003 to 2022 from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Original articles and reviews in English were included. The contributions of different countries, institutions, journals, and authors were compared, and the research hotspots were visualized for network analysis through GraphPad Prism, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer., Results: We enrolled a total of 987 publications. The United States contributed the most publications (281, 28.5%), followed by China (157, 15.9%) and Japan (80, 8.11%). Publications from the United States were cited more frequently (13,060 citations), with the highest H-index of 57. China ranked second in the total number of publications, the papers were not cited frequently (3790 citations), and the H-index ranked second (H-index = 31). PLoS One (32, 3.24%) published the most papers, and the University of California system had the highest number of publications (45, 4.56%). Bootsma H from the Netherlands published the most papers. The trend of research hotspots evolved mainly from the basic manifestation to pathogenesis and treatment of SS-DED and paid more attention to distinguishing SS-DED from that dry eye disease without SS., Conclusions: Based on the bibliometric, co-citation, and network analyses in this study, we obtained the annual publications and citations, the growth trends of publications, the productivity of countries, organizations, journals, and authors, high-quality publications, and the emerging hotspots of SS-DED, which may open new doors for promising research directions., (© 2023. Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is a common tear film disorder caused by decreased tear production or increased tear evaporation. The increased use of computers in the workplace has brought about the development of ocular health concerns, including dry eye disease. Therefore, this study was designed to determine the prevalence of DED associated with computer work and recommend preventing or reducing its development. This study investigated the prevalence of DED among IT students in Dera Ghazi Khan. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 327 undergraduate students of the IT department in the district of Dera Ghazi khan over 5 months from September 2021 to January 2022. DED was assessed subjectively with Ocular Surface Disease Index. Data were analysed using SPSS version 21. The quantitative analysis was presented as mean and standard deviation, and qualitative variables were introduced in frequency and percentages. The chi-square test (Fisher’s exact test) was used to study the significance of associations between dependent and independent variables. Results: The mean age of the participants was 20.25 ± 1.305 years (range 17–25). The prevalence of DED among computer programmers was 47.7%. This study showed that gender (p = 0.31), contact lens usage (p = 0.64), and duration of time spent on computer display units (p = 0.47) were not significant determinants of DED among computer programmers. Conclusion: DED is prevalent among IT students, along with different symptoms. However, further studies are required to adequately measure the prevalence of DED during longer exposure time to computer screens and explore environmental risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To investigate dry eye disease (DED) in newly diagnosed patients with depressive disorder (MDD). Method: This observational study included 48 MDD patients in Group 1 and 20 healthy controls in Group 2. Psychiatric and ophthalmic examinations, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Schirmer's test, tear breakup time (TBUT), Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and ocular staining were conducted. The results were statistically compared. Results: The participants, comprising 32 men and 36 women, had a mean age of 31.08 ± 11.7 years (18–64 years). Group 1 had a mean BDI score of 30.87 ± 8.56, while Group 2 had a score of 1.3 ± 1.3 (p < 0.001). In Group 1, 28 patients were diagnosed with DED, whereas in Group 2, six subjects were diagnosed with DED. The mean Schirmer's results in Group 1 and Group 2 were (mm/5 min) 10.87 ± 2.44 and 12.70 ± 2.3, respectively, and were significantly lower in Group 1 (p < 0.001). The mean OSDI scores in Group 1 (34.95 ± 15.8) were significantly higher compared to Group 2 (3.2 ± 3.1) (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in mean TBUT between Group 1 (9.41 ± 2.6 s) and Group 2 (9.8 ± 0.61 s) (p > 0.05). Significant correlations were found between BDI scores and Schirmer's results as well as OSDI scores (p < 0.05, p = 0.02, respectively). No statistically significant correlations were found between BDI scores and TBUT or MGD (p > 0.05). Conclusion: DED was found to be more prevalent in the MDD group. The severity of MDD and DED, as indicated by BDI, OSDI, and Schirmer's results, was found to be correlated. It was observed that patients with higher depression scores had more severe dry eye. Purpose: Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent ocular surface disease that is conventionally characterized by tear film hyperosmolarity and instability. This review presents a summarized classification of DED, followed by a comprehensive discussion of the most recent topical and systemic medications and clinical recommendations for selecting the most appropriate option for each patient. Methods: An extensive literature search was conducted on electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, using keywords including “dry eye syndrome,” “ocular surface disease,” “medical management,” “artificial tears,” “topical immunomodulators,” and “meibomian gland dysfunction.” Results: The underlying reasons for DED can range from insufficient aqueous tear production to increased tear evaporation. Recent literature has provided a more in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology of DED by examining the tear film's lipid, aqueous, and mucin layers. However, despite these advancements, medical management of patients with symptomatic DED has not fully reflected this modernized knowledge of its pathophysiology. Conclusion: To develop a rationalized strategy for treating DED, it is crucial to have updated knowledge of therapeutic options, their mechanisms of actions, and indications based on the DED type and underlying causes. Purpose: The present study aims to evaluate the optic nerve, macula, and choroidal changes in both rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and primary Sjögren’s syndrome (SjS) patients, and to compare these findings with age-matched healthy volunteers. Methods: This study included 46 RA patients, 33 primary SjS patients, and 37 age-matched healthy volunteers. All of the patients underwent a thorough ophthalmological examination, during which measurements of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer(GCL), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT) were taken using OCT (optical coherence tomography). The measurements taken from the right eye of each patient were used to compare among the groups. Results: RNFL thickness in superior quadrant was found to be statistically significantly thinner in the eyes with RA when compared to the control group (p = 0.022). In the nasal quadrant, the RNFL thickness was significantly thinner in patients with primary SjS compared to healthy individuals (p = 0.036). Also, the temporal quadrant RNFL was significantly thinner in RA patients than in the primary SjS patients (p = 0.033). GCL thickness was observed to be thinner in all quadrants of both RA and primary SjS groups compared to the control group. However, the difference was not found to be statistically significant. Subfoveal CT was observed to be thicker in RA and SjS groups compared to the control group, but this difference was also not statistically significant. Conclusion: Systemic autoimmune diseases like RA and primary SjS can lead to a decrease in RNLF and GCL thickness, which can impair visual acuity even in the absence of ocular symptoms. Purpose: This study was conducted to compare the ocular surface temperature in keratoconus eyes with that in normal eyes. Methods: A total of 27 participants were enrolled, with 10 and 17 participants in the keratoconus and control groups, respectively. Participants in the control group underwent an ophthalmic slit lamp examination and ocular thermography, while an additional corneal tomography was performed for those in the keratoconus group. Results: For patients with keratoconus, the mean upper eyelid temperature (UET) was 32.36 ± 1.02 °C, inner canthus temperature (ICT) was 34.25 ± 0.83 °C, outer canthus temperature (OCT) was 33.62 ± 0.96 °C, initial central corneal temperature (initial CCT) was 33.04 ± 1.03 °C, sixth-second CCT (6 s-CCT) was 32.67 ± 1.19 °C, and the mean change in CCT measured within 6 s (change in CCT within 6 s) was 0.36 ± 0.26 °C. For controls, the values for UET, ICT, OCT, initial CCT, 6 s-CCT, and change in CCT within 6 s were 32.35 ± 1.13 °C, 34.14 ± 0.91 °C, 33.51 ± 1.02 °C, 33.22 ± 1.01 °C, 32.99 ± 1.01 °C, and 0.22 ± 0.17 °C, respectively. Except for the change in CCT within 6 s (p = 0.022), no significant differences were observed in UET (p = 0.973), ICT (p = 0.659), OCT (p = 0.697), initial CCT (p = 0.556) or 6 s-CCT (p = 0.310) between the two groups. Conclusion: The keratoconus eyes showed faster changes in CCT and evaporation of tear film after opening the eyes. Therefore, the keratoconus eyes had a higher incidence of dry eye conditions. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the function of tear film with Oculus Keratograph 5M (Oculus K5M) and IDRA ocular surface analyser (IDRA), analyse their consistency and explore the potential of IDRA in the diagnosis of dry eye disease (DED)., Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 36 participants (DED group, 14 eyes; non-DED group, 22 eyes). The parameters of tear film function, including the first noninvasive breakup time (fNIBUT), average NIBUT (aNIBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH), lipid layer thickness (LLT), lipid layer colour (LLC), lipid layer uniformity (LLU), morphology of meibomian glands (MGs) and MG loss, were obtained with Oculus K5M and IDRA. The consistency of parameter measurements between the two devices was evaluated., Results: All the parameters except LLT, which can be measured only by IDRA, were not significantly different between the two instruments in DED eyes. However, IDRA reported lower values of fNIBUT, aNIBUT and TMH as well as higher MG loss scores in non-DED eyes than Oculus K5M did (p < 0.001, < 0.001, = 0.002, and = 0.002, respectively). Further regression analysis revealed that aNIBUT and LLT measured by IDRA were the optimal parameters for diagnosing DED (OR = 0.567 and 0.845, p = 0.057 and 0.043, respectively), and their combination had the strongest diagnostic potential (AUC = 0.841, sensitivity = 85.7%, and specificity = 77.3%)., Conclusion: As a user-friendly noninvasive device, the tear film function parameters measured by IDRA were highly consistent with those measured by Oculus K5M in DED patients. Background/objectives: To evaluate the effect of topical cyclosporine A (CsA) 0.05% in patients with pterygium surgery using fibrin glue (FG)., Subjects/methods: Patients with primary nasal pterygium were retrospectically analyzed and categorized into two groups: Group 1 with 41 eyes from 38 patients as a control group and group 2 with 39 eyes from 36 patients who received topical CsA twice a day for 6 months. Patients were assessed for recurrence rate, tear film parameters, side effects, and complications at postoperative intervals of 1-7 days; 1st, 3rd, 6th and 12th months. The follow-up period was 1 year., Results: The two groups were age (p = 0.934) and sex (p = 0.996) matched. CsA drop was discontinued in one patient due to burning sensation and conjunctival hyperemia after 1 week. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean preoperative and postoperative 1st year Schirmer I and tear break-up time (TBUT) values in group 1 (p = 0.136; p = 0.069). Although the difference between the mean preoperative and postoperative 1st year TBUT values in group 2 was not statistically different (p = 0.249), Schirmer I results were higher postoperatively (p = 0.003). There was no statistically significant difference between preoperative Schirmer (p = 0.496), postoperative Schirmer (p = 0.661), preoperative TBUT (p = 0.240) and postoperative TBUT (p = 0.238) results of the two groups. Recurrence was observed in only one patient from group 1., Conclusion: No recurrent pterygium cases were observed in group 2. Purpose: Exploring the prevalence of dry eye (DE) and the changes of tear film stability in patients with primary acquired obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct (PANDO)., Methods: In this cross-sectional, observational study, 370 eyes in 223 patients with PANDO were assessed. The ocular surface disease index (OSDI) was used to evaluate ocular surface symptoms, and the Keratograph 5M non-invasive ocular surface analyser was used to assess ocular surface parameters. According to the TFOS DEWS II criteria, patients with OSDI ≥ 13 and NIKBUT < 10 s were diagnosed with DE., Results: Of the 223 PANDO patients, 65 (29.1%) met the diagnostic criteria for DE. Compared with patients without DE, PANDO patients with DE were significantly older (p < 0.001), had a longer duration of epiphora (p = 0.023), and more likely to have a positive regurgitation on pressure over the lacrimal sac (ROPLAS) sign (p = 0.003). Multifactorial analysis showed that older age, positive ROPLAS and hypertension were significant independent predictors of DE (p < 0.05). Among the 147 unilateral PANDO patients without DE, the TMH, NIKBUT-first, NIKBUT-average and bulbar erythema scores were significantly higher in the PANDO sides., Conclusions: This study illustrated the prevalence of DE in PANDO patients was 29.1% and DE is more likely to occur in those who are older, have hypertension and are positive for ROPLAS. Purpose: Evaluate the efficacy and safety of LipiFlow® thermal pulsation treatment system compared with lid massage combined warm compress in Chinese patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods: Patients (n = 100 eyes, 50 subjects) diagnosed with MGD were recruited for this prospective, randomized, 3-month clinical trial. In Lipiflow group, patients (n = 50 eyes) received a single LipiFlow® thermal pulsation system treatment. In warm compress group, patients (n = 50 eyes) underwent warm compress daily for two weeks after an initial manual lid massage. Patients' symptoms were evaluated using Standard Patient Evaluation for Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire. Safety parameters included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP) and objective parameters including meibomian glands yielding lipid secretion (MGYLS) number, meibomian glands secretion (MGS) score, lipid layer thickness (LLT), tear-film breakup time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) were measured and presented from baseline and to 3 months post-treatment. Results: Baseline parameters in both groups were comparable (p > 0.05). SPEED score and TBUT improved in two groups from baseline to 3 months. MGYLS number, MGS score, LLT improved in LipiFlow group and these improvements were maintained with no significant regression at 3 months. CFS showed significant improvement in warm compress group at 1 month compared with LipiFlow group. Moreover, the correlation analysis indicated LLT was positively correlated with TBUT, MGS score, and MGYLS number. Conclusion: A single 12-min LipiFlow treatment is an effective therapy for MGD patients and can achieve improvements in symptoms alleviation and meibomian gland lipid secretion function lasting for at least 3 months. Purpose: Dermoscopy is a complementary examination of skin lesions, which allows the observation of anatomical features invisible to the naked eye. Its use increases the diagnostic accuracy of skin tumors. The development of polarized dermoscopy allowed the observation of deeper skin structures, without the need of skin contact. The purpose of this study was to present a low-cost prototype through the adaptation of polarized lenses on a slit lamp in order to assess anatomical aspects invisible to conventional biomicroscopy in eyelid lesions. Methods: Twenty two eyelid lesions were documented using a prototype, compound of two polarizing filters, orthogonal to each other, adapted to a slit lamp with an integrated digital camera. Images of the eyelid lesions were also obtained with non-polarized biomicroscopy and with a portable dermatoscope, and were compared regarding anatomical aspects. Results: Anatomical structures imperceptible to conventional ophthalmic examination were evidenced using the polarized lenses, demonstrating that this tool can be useful to the ophthalmologist when assessing eyelid lesions. We have obtained high-quality images of the lesions. The slit lamp provided higher magnification, better focus control and easier assessment of eyelid lesions than the portable dermatoscope. Conclusion: Ophthalmologists already use the slit lamp in their practice. The adaptation of polarized lenses to this device is a cost-effective, fast and non-invasive method that permits to improve the diagnostic accuracy of eyelid lesions, evidencing anatomical structures imperceptible to conventional ophthalmic examination. Purpose: Prostaglandin analogs (PGAs) are first-line treatments for ocular hypertension (OHT) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG). However, frequent side effects and high costs hinder patient's compliance resulting in disease progression. Evidence suggests selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) may be considered a first-line treatment for OHT and OAG due to its safety profile, minor side effects, and reduced costs. Considering that PGAs and SLT share action mechanisms, it is hypothesized that previous PGA therapy may affect subsequent SLT efficacy. Therefore, we analyzed if PGAs reduce SLT efficacy. Methods: An evidence-based review was performed to assess the safety and efficacy of SLT in patients previously treated with PGAs. For this purpose, we performed an extensive literature search using the National Library of Medicine's PubMed and Google Scholar database for all English language articles published until May 2021. Results: There is evidence of non-superiority of PGAs therapy versus SLT for OHT and OAG. A multicenter, randomized, observer-masked clinical trial (RCT) of untreated OHT and OAG patients concluded that SLT should be offered as the first-line treatment for these patients. This study was supported by a meta-analysis of RCTs, comparing SLT efficacy versus antiglaucoma drugs only, with the advantage of an SLT lower rate of adverse effects. Conclusions: Cost-effectiveness, patient compliance, and antiglaucoma drugs' side effects, including higher surgical failure, favor consideration of SLT as first-line therapy for OAG and OHT. Furthermore, SLT efficacy does not seem to be affected by prior PGA administration; however, larger cohort, comparative, multicenter RCTs are necessary to answer this question. Purpose: To evaluate preoperatively dry eye disease (DED) in patients with pathological Tear Break Up Time (TBUT), utilising subjective Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) with its subcategories and objective Keratograph 5M characteristics. Methods: Fifty-four cataract patients were included in this prospective study having a screening slit lamp TBUT of less than 10 s and more or equal to 5 s. Subjective evaluation of DED was performed with OSDI questionnaire and objective evaluation with Keratograph 5M. Tear Meniscus Height (TMH), bulbar and limbal redness and meibography grade were evaluated. Further analysis of OSDI subcategories, Visual Function Related (VFR), Ocular Symptoms related (OS) and Environmental Triggered (ET), was performed with linear and logistic multivariate regression models. Age, gender and logMAR visual acuity (VA) were also included in our models. Results: Following the initial TBUT screening we identified 27(50%) normal and 27(50%) dry eye patients, using OSDI questionnaire. There was no statistical difference in TMH (p = 0.64), bulbar redness (p = 0.54), limbal redness (p = 0.72) and meibography grade (p = 0.25), between normal and dry eye OSDI group. In our regression analysis, average logMAR VA was highly associated with a higher total OSDI score (p < 0.001) and with a higher OSDI-VFR score (p < 0.001). Female gender was associated with a higher OSDI-ET score (p = 0.03). Multivariate logistic regression models were performed by sorting patients into 2 categories of normal and dry eye group according to their total OSDI,OSDI-VRF,OSDI-OS and OSDI-ET score. An increase in logMAR VA increased the odds of having abnormal total OSDI score (p = 0.007) and OSDI-VFR score (p = 0.006). Females had increased odds of having abnormal OSDI-ET score (p = 0.044). Conclusions: Clinicians should be aware of OSDI limitations when screening cataract patients for dry eyes, as there is high correlation with VA. Female patients were more susceptible to environmental factors. Keratograph results should be interpreted with caution when they are evaluated in conjunction with OSDI during preoperative assessment of DED in cataract patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the use of meibography as an objective measure of the effects of incision & curettage (I&C) chalazion surgery on meibomian gland loss and morphology as well as dry eye syndrome. Methods: This prospective, interventional clinical study included adult patients with a primary chalazion which persisted despite conservative treatment. All patients underwent I&C surgery. The following parameters were compared both preoperatively and 21 days postoperatively: meibography, tear breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer test, meibum expression, tear meniscus height, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) grading, and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Results: Thirty eyelids were enrolled in the study. The mean age ± SD was 40.56 ± 13.94 years. Meibography demonstrated a significant decrease in meibomian gland loss (P = 0.00) and improvement in morphology. The most common meibomian gland pathology preoperatively noted was morphological signs of atrophy that included fluffy areas and tortuous glands. Both of these findings improved postoperatively (P = 0.04 and P = 0.02, respectively). There were a significant change in MGD grading and a significant decrease in meibum expression score postoperatively (P = 0.00). TBUT and tear meniscus height also improved significantly (P = 0.00 and P = 0.003, respectively). The OSDI score improved significantly as well (P = 0.00). Conclusion: While incision and drainage surgery is a time-honored, standard treatment for chalazion, meibography now demonstrates a global improvement in the meibomian glands, not just the ones involved with the chalazion. In addition to the improvements in the clinical and dry eye syndrome parameters improvements, meibography findings demonstrate that early I&C surgery restores the meibomian glands architecture significantly. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of prolonged surgical face mask wearing on dry eye symptoms and tear film break-up time (T-BUT) in health care professionals. Materials and methods: A total of 33 health care professionals were included in the present cross sectional prospective study. In addition to a complete ophthalmological examination T-BUT measurements were performed twice for all participants in the morning (8 am) and in the afternoon (5 pm). The subjects also filled-in the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire twice, before and after wearing the face mask, on the same day. Results: Sixty-six eyes of 33 participants (17 female and 16 male) were evaluated. The mean age was 33.6 ± 7.55 (24–48) years and mean total duration with mask on between the two evaluations was 514 ± 12.5 (495–526) minutes. The mean T-BUT was 9.3 ± 1.0 (3–16) seconds at 8 am and 8.3 ± 1.5 (3–14) seconds at 5 pm (p = 0.01). The mean OSDI score was 20.1 ± 8.3 (0–68.75) at 8 am and 27.4 ± 10.4 (0–81.25) at 5 pm (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Use of a surgical mask for the entire work-day was seen to worsen T-BUT and increase dry eye symptoms in healthy individuals. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the possibility of worsening of dry eye symptoms with the prolonged use of surgical face masks and consider modifications if necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To observe the changes of the ocular surface and meibomian glands by non-contact meibography in patients with type 1 diabetic children. Methods: A total of forty-three patients with type 1 diabetic children and 43 age-matched healthy subjects were included in the study. The ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, invasive tear film break-up time (TF-BUT), fluorescein staining of the ocular surface and Schirmer II test were performed for all participants. Ocular surface and lid margins were evaluated by slit lamp. Non-contact meibography was performed with the Phoenix-Meibography module in Sirius corneal topographic device. Results: Both groups consisted of 25 (58.1%) female and 18 (41.9%) male children and the mean age was 14.4 ± 2.5 years. In the T1DM group, the mean disease duration was 6.8 ± 3.1 years. The mean TF-BUT (p = 0.002) and Schirmer II test (p = 0.007) measurements were lower in the diabetic group than those of in controls. Total eyelid score (p = 0.027) and meibomian gland (MG) secretion score (p = 0.007) were significantly high in diabetic children. MG area loss was also significantly high in both lower and upper eyelid (p < 0.001). In morphological analyses of meibomian glands thinning, shortening and presence of ghost areas (p = 0.05, p = 0.027 and p = 0.000, respectively) were more common in the diabetic group. There was no correlation between both lower and upper eyelid meiboscores and disease duration (p = 0.51 and p = 0.61), BMI (p = 0.08 and p = 0.51), serum HbA1c level (p = 0.06 and p = 0.49) and IGF-1 SDS (p = 0.38 and p = 0.68). Conclusion: The study revealed that the MG loss area increases and morphological alterations of meibomian glands occur in type 1 diabetic children. Disease duration and metabolic control of diabetes do not affect meibography measurements. Background: To compare the effect of two different prostaglandin analogues (Travatan® vs. Xalatan®) on ocular surface parameters. Methods: This study includes 44 eyes of 44 patients with newly diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or ocular hypertension (OHT). Patients were randomly divided into two groups and treated with either benzalkonium chloride (BAK)-preserved latanoprost and polyquad-preserved travoprost. Changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) levels and ocular surface parameters including ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, tear breakup time (TBUT), ocular surface staining scores, and Schirmer test scores of patients were performed at baseline, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of treatment and compared. Results: The age, sex ratio, visual acuity, central corneal thickness, and cup/disc ratio were similar between the groups. A decrease in IOP levels (23.3 ± 2.5 to 15.5 ± 2.3), TBUT (5.5 ± 2.3 to 4.1 ± 1.7 s), Schirmer test values (11.3 ± 5.9 to 8.6 ± 4.7 s), and a worsening in OSDI scores (44.6 ± 15.2 to 55.1 ± 13.1) and staining scores (1.7 ± 1.6 to 2.3 ± 1.8) were observed in all patients in the first month of treatment (p < 0.05, for all). No further worsening was detected during the 1-year follow-up. There was no difference between the groups in terms of alterations in IOP levels and ocular surface parameters. Purpose: To determine the prevalence of Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and its risk factors in an elderly Iranian population Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019. The target population was the subjects aged 60 and over living in Tehran. Multistage cluster sampling was done to select the subjects from all Tehran districts. After an initial interview, all subjects underwent complete ophthalmic examinations including the measurement of visual acuity and refraction as well as slit lamp biomicroscopy to evaluate Meibomian glands. Results: Of 3791 selected subjects, 3310 participated in the study. The data of 3284 participants were analyzed. The mean age of the subjects was 68.24 ± 6.53 years (range: 60–97 years) and 57.8% of them were female. The total prevalence of MGD was 71.2% (68.3–74.1), and 38.1% (8.35–40.4), 30.3% (27.4–33.2), and 2.8% (2–3.6) of the subjects had MGD stage 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The prevalence of MGD was significantly higher in men (p < 0.001) and increased with age from 64.4% in the age group 60–64 years to 82.4% in subjects aged 80 years and over. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of MGD between smokers and nonsmokers; however, severe MGD was more common in smokers. The prevalence of MGD was 76.3% and 68.52% in subjects with and without a history of ocular surgery, respectively. The prevalence of MGD stage 3 and 4 was higher in subjects with a history of ocular surgery. Conclusions: In line with the results of other studies in Asian countries, this study found a high prevalence of MGD in an elderly population of Iran. Purpose: The aim of this study is to assess the intraexaminer repeatability of Non-invasive Keratograph Break-Up Time (NIKBUT) obtained using the Oculus Keratograph 5M (K5M), given its relevance as a homeostasis marker in Dry Eye Disease (DED). Methods: In total, 80 healthy volunteers aged between 30 and 89 years participated. Measurements were classified according to age, sex and the presence or not of DED. Repeatability was evaluated by the calculation of within-subject standard deviation (Sw), coefficient of repeatability (CoR) and coefficient of variation (CoV). Moreover, the Passing–Bablok regression method was applied. Results: Sw, CoR and CoV coefficients showed low repeatability in all groups with values between 3.57 and 7.14; 9.90 and 19.79; and 51.90 and 65.49, for each coefficient, respectively. No statistically significant differences were found in the NIKBUT measurements between healthy and DED patients (p = 0.188). Groups with more DED risk had better repeatability. Passing–Bablok regression also confirmed a lack of agreement between the maximum and minimum NIKBUT measurement. Conclusion: NIKBUT measurement has low intraexaminer repeatability even when considering sex, age and DED diagnosis. Purpose: Dry eye symptoms after conventional cataract surgery are a very common problem. Until now, only few data are available on objective tear film parameters in regard to femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (LCS). Aim of this study was therefore to analyze and compare tear film parameter changes between LCS and conventional cataract surgery. Methods: A consecutive group of 34 patients, scheduled for cataract surgery, were randomly selected for either LCS or conventional cataract surgery (17 patients/group). Tear film assessments including tear film osmolarity, Schirmer test, MMP-9 analysis via quantitative ELISA, corneal sensitivity, corneal fluorescein staining, and conjunctival fluorescein staining were sequentially evaluated pre- as well as 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Results: Both groups showed no significant difference in baseline characteristics. All surgeries were performed without any complications. After 1 and 3 months, there was no statistically significant difference in regard to tear film osmolarity (1 month: p = 0.81, 3 months: p = 1.0), Schirmer test (1 month: p = 0.35, 3 month: p = 0.08), and MMP-9 concentration (1 month: p = 0.36, 3 month: p = 0.28) between the two groups. Conclusions: Neither LCS nor conventional cataract surgery affected objective tear film parameters significantly during our 3-month postoperative observation period. Purpose: Dry eye disease is a highly prevalent condition that causes tear film instability, ocular discomfort, and visual disturbance. Lacrimera eye drops are approved for the short-term treatment of dry eye disease. We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcome of patients with moderate-to-severe dry eye disease treated with Lacrimera up to 1 month during routine clinical practice. Methods: We retrospectively collected data from 25 patients with dry eye disease from the start of Lacrimera treatment up to 1 month of follow-up period. We analyzed standard clinical parameters to follow the course of the patients' dry eye signs and symptoms. Results: Based on corneal staining data, we found that the percentage of patients with intact corneas raised from 12 to 64% after 1 month of Lacrimera treatment. During this period, we also observed an increase in both tear breakup time (p < 0.05) and Schirmer's score (p < 0.001), with lower values indicating severer signs. Lacrimera eye drops were judged by 29% of the patients to be effective at relieving eye symptoms. Conclusions: Lacrimera appears to be safe and effective in the treatment of dry eye disease, as assessed by corneal staining, tear breakup time, and Schirmer's analyses. Our data suggest that the regenerative effect of Lacrimera eye drops peaks at 2 weeks and is sustained for at least 1 month when administered for a longer period of time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To compare the effects of 180° and 360° selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) on intraocular pressure (IOP) and cornea in patients with bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma. Methods: Fifty-two eyes of 26 patients were included. On the same day, 180° SLT (Group 1) was applied to one eye of patients and 360° SLT (Group 2) to the other eye. IOP values were compared at pre-SLT and post-SLT 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, and 6 months. Changes in central corneal thickness (CCT) and endothelial cell count (ECC) were examined. Results: In groups, significant decreases were observed in IOP at 1 week (p < 0.05), 1, 3, and 6 months (p < 0.001). No significant difference was determined between group 1 and 2 in IOP-lowering effectiveness or success rates (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in CCT at inter- or intragroup comparisons (p > 0.05). In group 1, no significant difference was determined in pre- and post-SLT ECC (p > 0.05). In group 2, significant decrease in ECC was observed at 1 week (p < 0.05). However, ECC returned to its initial levels at 1 month. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in literature to compare different quadrant SLT applications performed on both eyes, on the same day, in the same patient group and to compare the effects of those applications on IOP and cornea. In reducing IOP, 180° and 360° SLT are similarly effective. These effects begin on the 1st week and persist for 6 months. Temporary corneal changes may be observed following 360° SLT. Purpose: Evaluate the efficacy and safety of LipiFlow ® thermal pulsation treatment system compared with lid massage combined warm compress in Chinese patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)., Methods: Patients (n = 100 eyes, 50 subjects) diagnosed with MGD were recruited for this prospective, randomized, 3-month clinical trial. In Lipiflow group, patients (n = 50 eyes) received a single LipiFlow ® thermal pulsation system treatment. In warm compress group, patients (n = 50 eyes) underwent warm compress daily for two weeks after an initial manual lid massage. Patients' symptoms were evaluated using Standard Patient Evaluation for Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire. Safety parameters included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP) and objective parameters including meibomian glands yielding lipid secretion (MGYLS) number, meibomian glands secretion (MGS) score, lipid layer thickness (LLT), tear-film breakup time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) were measured and presented from baseline and to 3 months post-treatment., Results: Baseline parameters in both groups were comparable (p > 0.05). SPEED score and TBUT improved in two groups from baseline to 3 months. MGYLS number, MGS score, LLT improved in LipiFlow group and these improvements were maintained with no significant regression at 3 months. CFS showed significant improvement in warm compress group at 1 month compared with LipiFlow group. Moreover, the correlation analysis indicated LLT was positively correlated with TBUT, MGS score, and MGYLS number., Conclusion: A single 12-min LipiFlow treatment is an effective therapy for MGD patients and can achieve improvements in symptoms alleviation and meibomian gland lipid secretion function lasting for at least 3 months., (© 2022. Background: Dry eye is the most common eye disorder of tears and ocular surface. However, the extent to which diabetes mellitus may confer risk of dry eye remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis that synthesizes the association between diabetes mellitus and dry eye. Methods: Case–control studies were selected from the Medline, Embase, Cochrane database from January 2000 to March 2018. Two reviewers screened potential studies, and eligible studies were included according to keywords and predefined criteria. We calculated the overall risk estimates by using a fixed-effect model or a random-effects model in relation to heterogeneity. Results: A total of four studies were included in our meta-analysis consisting of 2,504,794 persons. Our study showed a significant association between diabetes mellitus and the risk of dry eye syndrome (OR 1.30; 95% CI 1.08–1.57; P value = 0.006). However, the heterogeneity was observed (P value < 0.001, I2 = 95.2%). Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggests that diabetes mellitus has a significant association with the risk of dry eye. However, this result is limited by heterogeneity. Further prospective and concise studies are needed to confirm the association between diabetes mellitus and dry eye. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To translate and validate a Spanish-language adaptation of the 5-Item Dry Eye Questionnaire for the Mexican population. Methods: Based on the MAPI Institute guidelines, the linguistic validation procedures consisted of four steps. Every step was reviewed by the committee. The translated validated questionnaire was applied to 25 Mexican subjects. The questionnaires were completed by the same subjects at three time points, 8 h apart on the same day and then 3 days later. Sensitivity and specificity of the DEQ-5 to predict DE signs was subsequently estimated in 200 patients see in the Asociación para Evitar la Ceguera ophthalmology clinic. Results: During the forward translation step analysis, the committee decided to change the severity scale, as the words "constantly" and "frequently" are synonymous in Spanish, so it was modified by changing "constantly" to "always" for better understanding. Overall, the intra-test intra-class correlation coefficient from tests administered on the same day was 0.9 (95% CI 0.77–0.95, p = 0.0005). The intra-test intra-class correlation coefficient from tests administered 3 days apart was 0.9 (95% CI 0.88–0.97, p = 0.0005). When applying the questionnaire to 200 patients seen in an eye clinic, we found a sensitivity of 76% and a specificity of 31% for a DEQ-5 score of ≥ 6, against 2 or more positive signs of dry eye. Conclusion: MAPI methodology proved to be a reliable strategy for the transcultural Dry Eye Questionnaire for translation from English to Spanish for the Mexican population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To estimate the prevalence of dry eye among video-terminal (VDT) users and to assess risk factors for dry eye in this population. Study design: A single-centre, cross-sectional study was carried out on subjects employed as VDT workers and on a control group. Methods: Demographic data, years spent working at a VDT, number of effective hours at VDT/day, number and hours of breaks/day were considered. All subjects underwent a complete ophthalmic examination and completed the Italian version of the computer vision symptom scale 17-item (CVSS17) questionnaire. Both groups were classified as definite, suspect and non-dry eye syndrome (DES). Results: One-hundred and ninety four subjects completed the study; 70 (36.1%) of which represented the control group, and 124 (63.9%) represented the VDT group. Among VDT workers, 29 (23.4%) presented definite DES and 55 (44.4%) suspect DES, while among controls, only 2 (2.9%) presented definite DES and 37 (52.8%) suspect DES. In the univariate analysis, the DES group was older (p < 0.001), spent more time a day at VDT (p < 0.001), used VDT from more time (p < 0.001), instilled artificial tears (p = 0.031), and presented worst quality of life (p < 0.001). At the multivariate analysis, only age and time at VDT retained association with DES (OR 1.05; 95% CI 1.01–1.09; p = 0.01 and OR 1.57; 95% CI 1.07–2.02; p = 0.017, respectively). Conclusions: The global increase of VDT workers is accompanied by a higher frequency of ocular complaints. Older subjects and people spending more than 4 h a day at VDT are at major risk to develop DES and should take precautions to prevent the onset of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) has been used for treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension, pigmenter and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma being considered a low-risk procedure. Therefore, transitory and permanent adverse effects have been reported, including corneal changes, subclinical edema, and reduction in endothelial cells and in central corneal thickness. Despite rarer, serious corneal complications after SLT can be permanent and lead to visual impairment, central corneal haze, opacity and narrowing. The mechanism involves increase of vasoactive and chemotactic cytokines causing inflammatory infiltrate, destruction of stromal collagen by fibroblasts and increase of matrix metalloproteinases type 2, which impair reepithelization. SLT also increases free radical production and reduces antioxidant enzymes, resulting in endothelium damages. Low-power laser therapy (LPLT) has been used in regenerative medicine based on its biostimulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. Biostimulation occurs through the interaction of laser photons with cytochrome C oxidase enzyme, which activates intracellular biochemical cascades causing synthesis of a number of molecules related to anti-inflammatory, regenerative effects, pain relief and reduction in edema. It has been showed that LPLT reduces gene expression related to pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases, and it increases expression of growth factors related to its proliferative and healing actions. Although radiations emitted by low-power lasers are considered safe and able to induce therapeutic effects, researches based on experimental models for glaucoma could bring important data if LPLT could be an alternative approach to improve acceptation for patients undergoing SLT. Purpose: To evaluate corneal endothelial cell parameters after a single session of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEG) patients.Methods: Corneal endothelial cell parameters of 18 PEG patients were compared with 18 healthy subjects following SLT treatment. All patients underwent SLT treatment to 180 degrees of inferior trabecular meshwork. Corneal measurements were performed using specular microscopy (Noncon Robo SP8000, Konan Medical, Hyogo, Japan). Endothelial cell density (ECD), hexagonal cell ratio (HEX), coefficient of variation (CV) of the corneal endothelial cell layer and central corneal thickness of the patients were measured at each visit.Results: There was a statistically significant decrease in ECD (p = 0.004) and a statistically significant increase in CV (p = 0.041) at superior cornea 1 week after SLT. They returned to pre-SLT values at 1 month. One hour post-SLT HEX of inferior cornea was statistically significantly reduced (p = 0.01). At central cornea, there was a significant increase in HEX after 1 week (p = 0.001). Post-SLT IOP showed a significant positive correlation with CV and significant negative correlation with HEX at superior and inferior cornea. There was no correlation between total laser energy used and endothelial cell parameters.Conclusion: Effect of a single session of SLT on corneal endothelium of PEG patients appears to be transient, and superior cornea was more affected than central and inferior cornea.
