The escalating global population has led to a surge in waste textiles, posing a significant challenge in landfill management worldwide. In this work, ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole acetate ([Bmim]OAc) and DMF (N, n -dimethylformamide) were used as solvents to dissolve waste denim fabric, then vanadium dioxide (VO 2) nanoparticles were introduced into the spinning solution, and cellulose fibers were regenerated by dry-wet spinning process, to promote the recycling of waste cotton fabric. Finally, regenerated cellulose fibers with high added value were prepared by dry-wet spinning. Through this innovative strategy, on the one hand, because VO 2 can form a large number of hydrogen bonds between the regenerated cellulose molecules, and realize the cross-networking structure of the molecular chains inside the fiber, the mechanical properties of the regenerated cellulose fibers are enhanced. On the other hand, due to the thermal phase transformation characteristics of VO 2 , it also endows the regenerated cellulose fiber unique intelligent temperature control function. Compared with the pristine regenerated fiber, the tensile stress of the regenerated fiber after adding VO 2 nanoparticles (F-VO 2) increased by 25.6 %, reaching 158.68 MPa. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are natural biopolyesters produced by microorganisms that represent one of the most promising candidates for the replacement of conventional plastics due to their complete biodegradability and advantageous material properties which can be modulated by varying their monomer composition. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate- co -3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB- co -3HV)] has received particular research attention because it can be synthesized based on the same microbial platform developed for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] without much modification, with as high productivity as P(3HB). It also offers more useful mechanical and thermal properties than P(3HB), which broaden its application as a biocompatible and biodegradable polyester. However, a significant commercial disadvantage of P(3HB- co -3HV) is its rather high production cost, thus many studies have investigated the economical synthesis of P(3HB- co -3HV) from structurally related and unrelated carbon sources in both wild-type and recombinant microbial strains. A large number of metabolic engineering strategies have also been proposed to tune the monomer composition of P(3HB- co -3HV) and thus its material properties. Polylactic acid (PLA), as a green functional polymer, has been useful in various coating applications. However, due to the low mechanical strength and thermal stability of PLA, it needs to be improved in order to expand its application areas. In this work, a series of polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposite films were prepared through introducing polydopamine-modified mica (PDA@MICA) as a self-assemble nanofiller to enhance its mechanical and thermal properties. The results demonstrated that PLA/PDA@MICA shows excellent mechanical properties. Tensile tests showed that PLA/PDA@MICA exhibits a 58.3 % increase in tensile strength and a 16.8 % increase in Young's modulus compared to pure PLA. Meanwhile, thermal performance testing shown the introduction of PDA@MICA led to an increase in crystallinities (Xc = 24.78 %). And the thermal decomposition temperature of PLA/PDA@MICA film (374 °C) was slightly higher than that of PLA film (367 °C). The simultaneous improvement of the mechanical and thermal properties was attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between PLA and PDA@MICA. In addition, the parallel arrangement of PDA@MICA and PLA macromolecular chains forms a unique "brick and mortar" structure in the coating, which enhances the mechanical properties of PLA/PDA@MICA composite coatings. This study reports a successful approach to simultaneously address the drawbacks of PLA, specifically its low thermal stability and mechanical strength, thereby promoting its widespread application in the coatings industry. In the field of building energy conservation, the development of biodegradable biomass aerogels with excellent mechanical performance, flame retardancy and thermal insulation properties is of particular importance. Here, a directional freeze-drying method was used for fabricating composite sodium alginate (SA) aerogels containing functionalized ammonium polyphosphate (APP) flame retardant. In particular, APP was coated with melamine (MEL) and phytic acid (PA) by a supramolecular assembly process. Through optimizing the flame retardant addition, the SA-20 AMP sample exhibited excellent flame retardant and thermal insulation properties, with the limiting oxygen index of 38.2 % and the UL-94 rating of V-0. Such aerogels with anisotropic morphology demonstrated a low thermal conductivity of 0.0288 (W/m·K) in the radial direction (perpendicular to the lamellar structure). In addition, as-obtained aerogels displayed remarkable water stability and mechanical properties, indicating significant potential for practical applications. This work focuses on the potential of agar from the seaweed Gracilaria fisheri to modify the properties of starch foam. The effects of different ratios of glycerol and agar on the properties of starch foams were investigated. All formulations used in this study produced easy-to-handle, smooth, single-use foam trays with no visible cracks. The addition of agar slightly affected the off-white color of the foam but red and yellow color values significantly decreased with increments of agar content. As the agar content was increased, the foam became less dense. A foam produced at a glycerol:agar ratio of 3:7 exhibited the highest values of flexural stress at maximum load (3.23 MPa), modulus (194.46 MPa) and hardness (97.50), and the highest temperature at maximum weight loss (T max) (337 °C). Therefore, starch foam modified with agar from Gracilaria fisheri showed suitable physical, mechanical and thermal properties for food packaging, and could possibly be used in the place of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. This work involves preparing zinc manganite nanoparticles (ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs) using the Sol-gel method. Polymer nanocomposites of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Sodium alginate (NaAlg)- ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs were created using the solution casting technique. The polymer nanocomposites films were made with varying weight percentages of ZnMn 2 O 4 nanoparticles. With the addition of nanofiller, the reduced direct and indirect energy band gap values and increased Urbach energy values were discovered in the UV–Vis data. XRD data showed a reduction in crystallinity degree with dopant. ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs had a strong interaction with PVA/NaAlg blend, as confirmed by FTIR. The addition of ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs led to improved thermal stability of the polymer nanocomposites films. Additionally, the nanocomposites films' mechanical characteristics were examined. The loading of ZnMn 2 O 4 nanoparticles has been associated with an increasing trend in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, including its toughness, Young's modulus, Tensile strength (Ts), and elongation. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites against fungus and bacteria was studied. Additionally, PVA/NaAlg-ZnMn 2 O 4 nanocomposites films had good antibacterial characteristics against environmental microorganisms such as Gram-positive (G+) S. aureus and Gram-negative(G−) E. coli bacteria as well as fungi C. albicans and A. niger. It was observed that the biodegradability of the nanocomposite films was lower compared to the pure PVA/NaAlg film. Compared to pure film, the water solubility was decreased upon the addition of ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs. After ZnMn 2 O 4 was added to the pure blend, the WVTR decreased. Obtaining lignin-based graphite-like microcrystallites at a relatively low carbonization temperature is still very challenging. In this work, we report a new method based on condensed structures, for regulating graphite-like microcrystalline structures via the incorporation of 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) into the main structure of lignin. The effects of MDI on the thermal properties of lignin and the graphite-like microcrystalline structure of lignin-based ultrafine carbon fibers were extensively studied and investigated. The incorporation of MDI decreased the thermal stability of lignin, increased the carbon yield and enhanced the formation of graphite-like microcrystallites, which are beneficial for reducing energy consumption during the preparation of lignin-based carbon fibers. The modified lignin-based ultrafine carbon fibers (M-LCFs) demonstrated satisfactory electrochemical performance, including high specific capacitance, low charge transfer resistance, and good cycle performance. The M-LCFs-3/2 electrode had a specific capacitance of 241.3 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1, and a residual ratio of 90.2 % after 2000 charge and discharge cycles. Conducting biopolymer blend nanocomposites of cashew gum (CG) and polypyrrole (PPy), with varying concentrations of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles were synthesized through an in-situ polymerization method using water as a sustainable solvent. The formation of blend nanocomposites was characterized using UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). UV spectroscopy revealed a significant reduction in absorption intensity with the addition of CuO, indicating enhanced optical properties. FT-IR and XRD analysis confirmed the successful incorporation of CuO into the CG/PPy blend. FE-SEM images revealed the uniform distribution of nanoparticles throughout the biopolymer blend, particularly in the 7 wt% sample. TGA and DSC results demonstrated a significant enhancement in thermal stability, increasing from 352 °C to 412 °C and a rise in the glass transition temperature from 89 °C to 106 °C in the blend nanocomposites. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss, impedance, Nyquist plot, electrical conductivity, and electric modulus were extensively examined at different temperatures and frequencies. The dielectric constant of the CG/PPy blend increased from 2720 to 92,950 with the addition of 7 wt% CuO, measured at 100 Hz. Hyaluronic acid (HA), as a multifunctional hydrophilic polysaccharide, is potentially beneficial in improving the thermal stability of fermented modified starches, but relevant insights at the molecular level are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different levels (0 %, 3 %, 6 %, 9 %, 12 % and 15 %) of HA on the structural, thermal and pasting properties of wheat starch co-fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus plantarum. We found that the addition of HA increased the median particle size of fermented starch granules from 16.387 to 17.070 μm. Meanwhile, the crystallinity of fermented starch was negatively correlated with the HA content, decreasing from 14.70 % to 12.80 % (p < 0.05). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results confirmed that HA interacted with starch granules and water molecules mainly through hydrogen bonding. Thermal analyses showed that the thermal peak of the composite correlated with the HA concentration, reaching a maximum of 73.17 °C at 12 % HA. In addition, HA increases the pasting temperature, reduces the peak, breakdown and setback viscosities of starch. This study aimed to evaluate the physical and chemical alterations in rice starch modified by heat-moisture treatment (HMT) using an autoclave and a microwave, in association with avocado oil (AO), and evaluate the effects on thermal and structural properties, in vitro digestibility, and estimated glycemic index (eGI). Samples were adjusted to 30 % (w /w) moisture and 2, 4 and 8 % AO. HMT was conducted at 110 °C for 1 h in the autoclave (A0%, A2%, A4%, and A8%) and at 50 °C for 3 min in the microwave (M0%, M2%, M4%, and M8%). Both procedures did not alter the starch crystallinity pattern (type-A). Pasting viscosity, setback, relative crystallinity, and gelatinisation enthalpy decreased as the AO content increased in both HMT processes. The M8% showed reduced digestibility, decreased eGI (72.99, p < 0.05), and lower starch hydrolysis concentration (62.75 %, p < 0.05). The application of HMT with the addition of AO may be an interesting process for obtaining resistant starch since its content increased after both treatments (A8%, M4%, and M8%). We developed a facile method for the fabrication of a biodegradable delivery system composed of two blocks: curdlan and curcumin. This was achieved by chemical functionalization of curdlan through tosylation, amination followed by complexation with curcumin. A comprehensive evaluation of structural characterization and component stability showed that cur-cum complex exhibited better anticancer properties with enhanced thermal properties. The cur-cum complex shows pH sensitive sustained release behaviour with higher release at acidic pH and kinetic data of drug release follows the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. The cur-cum complex has ability to block the proliferation of the MCF-7 cell line as revealed by MTT assay which showed increased toxicity of cur-cum complex against these cell lines. The results obtained from western blot analysis demonstrated that the co-administration of cur and cum effectively induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells. This effect was observed by a considerable upregulation of the Bcl-2/Bax ratio, a decline in mRNA expression of LDHA, level of lactate and LDH activity. The results clearly depict the role of functionalized curdlan as efficient carrier for curcumin delivery with prolonged, sustained release and enhanced bioavailability, thereby improving the overall anticancer activity. Extrusion is typically employed to prepare resistant starch (RS). However, the process is complicated. In this study, the effects of twin-screw extrusion on the crystallinity, thermal properties, and functional properties of starch formed in different extrusion zones were investigated. The effects of this process on the rheological properties and microstructure of RS-added skimmed yogurt were also studied. According to the results, the RS content increased from 7.40 % in the raw material to 33.79 % in the extrudate. The A-type crystal structure of the starch was not observed. The dissociation temperature of the extruded starch ranged from 87.76 °C to 100.94 °C. The glycemic index (GI) of skimmed yogurt fortified with 0.4 % RS was 48.7, and the viscosity was also improved. Pectin is widely used in several products in the industry. Conventionally, strong and harmful acids are used for its extraction. This study optimized the extraction of orange peel's pectin using citric acid, considering yield and degree of esterification (DE) as response variables. Proximal analyses were performed, and the samples were subjected to a Box-Behnken design on three central points, considering as variables the temperature, time, and pH. The results of proximate analyses of the orange peels revealed 11.76 % moisture content, 87.26 % volatiles, 0.09 % ash, 50.45 % soluble carbohydrates, 70.60 % total carbohydrates, 0.89 % fixed carbon, 5.35 % lipids, and 36.75 mg GAE/g of phenolic compounds. The resulting second-order polynomial model described the relation of the input and output variables related to each other. The best performance to obtain a higher yield (18.18 %) of high methoxyl pectin (DE 50 %) was set at 100 °C/30 min/pH 2.48. Pectin showed antioxidant properties by ABTS and DPPH assays and similar thermal properties to the commercial polymer. Its equivalent weight was 1219.51 mol/g, and the methoxyl and anhydrouronic acid were 2.23 and 67.10 %, respectively. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a group of natural polyesters that are synthesised by microorganisms. In general, their thermoplasticity and (in some forms) their elasticity makes them attractive alternatives to petrochemical-derived polymers. However, the high crystallinity of some PHAs – such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) – results in brittleness and a narrow processing window for applications such as packaging. The production of copolymeric PHA materials is one approach to improving the mechanical and thermal properties of PHAs. Another solution is the manufacture of PHA-based block copolymers. The incorporation of different polymer and copolymer blocks coupled to PHA, and the resulting tailorable microstructure of these block copolymers, can result in a step-change improvement in PHA-based material properties. A range of production strategies for PHA-based block copolymers has been reported in the literature, including biological production and chemical synthesis. Biological production is typically less controllable, with products of a broad molecular weight and compositional distribution, unless finely controlled using genetically modified organisms. By contrast, chemical synthesis delivers relatively controllable block structures and narrowly defined compositions. This paper reviews current knowledge in the areas of the production and properties of PHA-based block copolymers, and highlights knowledge gaps and future potential areas of research. Plastic pollution is the biggest environmental concern of our time. Breakdown products like micro- and nano-plastics inevitably enter the food chain and pose unprecedented health risks. In this scenario, bio-based and biodegradable plastic alternatives have been given a momentum aiming to bridge a transition towards a more sustainable future. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are one of the few thermoplastic polymers synthesized 100 % via biotechnological routes which fully biodegrade in common natural environments. Poly(hydroxybutyrate- co -hydroxyhexanoate) [P(HB- co -HHx)] is a PHA copolymer with great potential for the commodity polymers industry, as its mechanical properties can be tailored through fine-tuning of its molar HHx content. We have recently developed a strategy that enables for reliable tailoring of the monomer content of P(HB- co -HHx). Nevertheless, there is often a lack of comprehensive investigation of the material properties of PHAs to evaluate whether they actually mimic the functionalities of conventional plastics. We present a detailed study of P(HB- co -HHx) copolymers with low to moderate hydroxyhexanoate content to understand how the HHx monomer content influences the thermal and mechanical properties and to link those to their abiotic degradation. By increasing the HHx fractions in the range of 2 – 14 mol%, we impart an extension of the processing window and application range as the melting temperature (T m) and glass temperature (T g) of the copolymers decrease from T m 165 °C to 126 °C, T g 4 °C to −5.9 °C, accompanied by reduced crystallinity from 54 % to 20 %. Elongation at break was increased from 5.7 % up to 703 % at 14 mol% HHx content, confirming that the range examined was sufficiently large to obtain ductile and brittle copolymers, while tensile strength was maintained throughout the studied range. Finally, accelerated abiotic degradation was shown to be slowed down with an increasing HHx fraction decreasing from 70 % to 55 % in 12 h. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crowded environments, commonly found in the food system, are utilized to enhance the properties of soybean proteins. Despite their widespread application, little information exists regarding the impact of crowded environments on the denaturation behaviors of soybean proteins. In this study, we investigated how crowding agents with varying molecular weights, functional groups, and topology affect the denaturation behavior of glycinin under crowded conditions. The results reveal that thermal stability in PEG crowded environments is mainly influenced by both preferential hydration and binding. The stabilization is primarily enthalpy-driven, with aggregation contributing additional entropic stabilization. Specifically, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol exhibit temperature-dependent, bilateral effects on glycinin stability. At the denaturation temperature, hydrophobic interactions play a predominant role, decreasing glycinin's thermal stability. However, at a molecular weight of 200 g/mol, there is a delicate balance between destabilizing and stabilizing effects, leading to no significant change in thermal stability. With the addition of PEG 400, 1000, and 2000, besides preferential hydration, additional hard-core repulsions between glycinin molecules enhance thermal stability. Methylation modification experiments demonstrated that 2-methoxyethyl ether exerted a more pronounced denaturing effect. Additionally, the cyclization of PEG 1000 decreased its stabilizing effect. Two biobased composite films have been prepared with poly (lactic acid-trimethylene carbonate), polylactic acid and Laponite by solvent evaporation method. The 1H NMR and FTIR spectrums illustrate that P (LA-TMC) polymer is successfully synthesized and designed composite films are produced. Morphometric analyses demonstrate that the roughnesses of the film's surface and cross-section are on the increase with higher PLA and Laponite content. Mechanical performances reveal that the rise in tensile strength and modulus while maintaining excellent elongation at break is mainly due to the increase in the content of polylactic acid and Laponite. By utilizing the nano effect of Laponite, the maximum tensile strength of the composite film reaches 34.59 MPa. Thermal property results illustrate that the Tg and initial decomposition temperature are on the growth with the increase of PLA content. However, it is not significant on the effect of Laponite on the initial decomposition temperature. The water vapor permeability measurements prove that the barrier property of P(LA-TMC)/PLA/Laponite composite film is on the ascent with the Laponite addition. Hydrolytic degradation tests indicate that PLA and Laponite play avital part in accelerating the degradation rate of composite films and alkaline media is superior acidic and neutral conditions. In this study, a method was proposed to prepare biocomposites from polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified lignin using twin-screw extrusion process. The structure of PEG-modified lignin was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gel permeation chromatographic (GPC) analysis. The effects of different contents of soda lignin and PEG-modified lignin on PLA composites were studied by tensile test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and degradation analysis. The experimental results showed that the addition of PEG-modified lignin enhanced the heat resistance of PLA composite. PLA could be combined with up to 30 % PEG-modified lignin, with no significant reduction in tensile strength properties. Compared with PLA-L30, the tensile stress and elongation at break of PLA-PL30 were increased by 26.4 % and 78.9 %, respectively. The challenge of global climate change has drawn people's attention to the issue of carbon emissions. Reducing the use of petroleum-derived materials and increasing the use of biodegradable materials is a current focus of research, especially in the packaging materials industry. This study focused on the use of environmentally friendly plastics and waste paper as the main materials for packaging films. Poly(butylene succinate- co -lactate) (PBSL) was modified with maleic anhydride (MA) to form a biobased compatibilizer (MPBSL), which was then blended with a mixture (WPS) of waste-paper powder (WP) and silica aerogel powder (SP) to form the designed composite (MPBSL/WPS). The modification of PBSL with MA improved interfacial adhesion between PBSL and WPS. The structure, thermal, and mechanical properties, water vapor/oxygen barrier, toxicity, freshness, and biodegradability of MPBSL/WPS films were evaluated. Compared with the PBSL/WP film, the MPBSL/WPS film exhibited increased tensile strength at break of 4–13.5 MPa, increased initial decomposition loss at 5 wt% of 14–35 °C, and decreased water/oxygen permeabilities of 18–105 cm3/m2·d·Pa. In the water absorption test, the MPBSL/WPS film displayed about 2–6 % lower water absorption than that of the PBSL/WP film. In the cytocompatibility test, both MPBSL/WPS and PBSL/WP membrane were nontoxic. In addition, compared with PBSL/WP film and the control, the MPBSL/WPS film significantly reduced moisture loss, extended the shelf life, and prevented microbial growth in vegetable and meat preservation tests. Both MPBSL/WPS and PBSL/WP films were biodegradable in a 60-day soil biodegradation test; the degradation rate was 50 % when the WP or WPS content was 40 wt%. Micro-to-nano transformation can make a material unique. This research uses jute microfiber to extract Holo and Alpha forms of cellulose, which are later attempted to electrospun into superfine nanofibers (NFs). Initial investigation of morphological, physicochemical, crystallographic, and thermal properties confirmed successful synthesis of Holo and Alpha-cellulose (H/A-cellulose). Afterwards, the electrospinnable concentration of H/A-cellulose was optimized and their bead-free ultrafine NFs in the range of 109–145 nm were fabricated. FTIR analysis confirmed the source composition in Holo and Alpha CNF with the partial formation of trifluoroacetyl esters. Alpha CNF exhibited better structural integrity despite the crystallinity and thermal stability deteriorated in both Holo and Alpha CNF. Both Holo and Alpha CNF exhibited adequate mechanical performance and liquid uptake properties. Alpha CNF showed better morphological stability in organic solvents and slower biodegradation than Holo CNF. Subsequent investigation revealed that both Holo and Alpha CNF didn't exhibit cytotoxic effects on COS-7 cells and above 90 % of cells were viable in contact with both CNF. Significant proliferation and attachment of COS-7 cells were noticed within 7 days of incubation with the prepared CNF. The advantages of physically modifying starch are evident: minimal environmental impact, no by-products, and straightforward control. The impact of dual modification on starch properties is contingent upon modification conditions and starch type. Herein, we subjected purple rice starch (PRS) to heat-moisture treatment (HMT, 110 °C, 4 h) with varying moisture content, ultrasound treatment (UT, 50 Hz, 30 min) with different ultrasonic power, and a combination of HMT and UT. Our findings reveal that UT following HMT dispersed starch granules initially aggregated by HMT and resulted in a rougher granule surface. Rheological analysis showcased a synergistic effect of HMT and UT, enhancing the fluidity of PRS and reinforcing its resistance to deformation in paste form. The absorbance ratio R 1047/1015 indicates that increased moisture content during HMT and high ultrasound power for UT reduced the short-range order degree (1.69). However, the combined HMT-UT exhibited an increased R 1047/1015 (1.38–1.64) compared to HMT alone (1.29–1.45), likely due to short-chain rearrangement. Notably, the A-type structure of PRS remained unaltered, but overall crystallinity significantly decreased (23.01 %–28.56 %), consistent with DSC results. Carboxymethyl starch (CST) was introduced to improve gelatin films and its practical application as edible high-performance films for food packaging and cooking was also investigated. The gelatin films modified by carboxymethyl starch exhibited the transparent appearance, tensile strength, barrier properties (oxygen, water vapor and UV light), and thermal performance (TGA, thermal shrinkage and heat-sealing strength). Resulting from the effect of electrostatic interaction modes on the properties of films, electrostatic repulsion could surpass electrostatic attraction in improving the tensile strength, oxygen barrier property and thermal stability of the films probably due to extensive physical entanglement without aggregation. Analysis of FTIR, zeta potential, interfacial dilatational rheology, shear rheological properties, XRD, Raman, SEM and AFM suggested that hydrogen bonding and electrostatic repulsion contributed to the excellent performance. The packaged food could also be cooked with the prepared film for porridge; and the film slightly influenced the shear rheological properties of porridge and imposed little effect on the odors (Electronic-Nose) of porridge. Having poor interfacial compatibility between biochar microsphere (BM) and polylactic acid (PLA) should be responsible for the unbalance of composite film strength and toughness. Elucidating the effect of polydopamine (PDA) on BM and BM/PLA composite films is the ultimate goal of this study based on the mussel bionic principle. It was found that the strong adhesion of PDA on the BM surface was achieved, which improved the surface roughness and thermal stability. Also, PDA modification can facilitate crystallization, increase thermal properties, improve interfacial compatibility, and enhance the tensile properties of BM/PLA composite films. Silane-based PDA modified BM/PLA composite film exhibited the best tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break with 77.95 MPa, 1.87 GPa, and 7.30%. Applications for polylactic acid (PLA) are significantly impacted by its poor mechanical properties and lack of thermal stability. The goal of this work is to bridge the gap of poor compatibility among the components and enhance their interface interlocking capability to improve the toughness and thermal stability. Ultrafine bamboo charcoal (UFBC) was treated through deep eutectic solvent (DES) method to deposit sodium lignosulfonate (LS) on its surface. LS was used with PLA as a bio-coupling agent to create an eco-friendly PLA composite film with a wide range of characteristics. Benefiting from the penetration of PLA to the internal pores in UFBC, the resultant L-UFBC/PLA film has a good mechanical interlocking structure. Ls can increase the compatibility and strengthen the interface interlocking capability through DES method, which greatly improves the mechanical properties of the system. In comparison to pure PLA one, the elongation at break was 136.24 % greater, and the crystallinity (Xc) increased from 1.09 % to 3.33 %. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the system was also improved, and the residual at 600 °C rose by 4.83 %. Cardanol (CD) is used as a reactive compatibilizer, and blended with polylactic acid (PLA) and polypropylene carbonate (PPC) resin (70/30(w/w)) to obtain a series of PLA/PPC/CD blends. The systematic study was conducted on the thermal properties, optical properties, rheological properties, mechanical properties, and microscopic morphology of the blend, by varying amounts of CD added to the blends. A detailed explanation and comprehensive analysis of the reaction mechanism between CD and PLA/PPC have been made. The study found that CD acts as a "bridge" between the PLA and PPC, forming the structure of a block copolymer (PLA-b-CD-b-PPC), and the copolymer can greatly improve the compatibility of PLA and PPC. When the amount of CD reaches 8 wt%, only one T g is observed in the blend, simultaneously, PLA/PPC has already transitioned from a partially compatible system to a completely compatible system. At the same time, the addition of CD does not have any negative impact on the thermal stability of the PLA/PPC blend under processing temperature conditions, and the thermal stability of the PLA/PPC/CD blends can even be improved under extreme conditions. In addition, the addition of CD allows the PLA/PPC/CD blends to maintain a high light transmittance while reducing the opacity of the blend (the light transmittance remains above 92 %, and the opacity is reduced from 37 % to about 24 %), demonstrating excellent optical properties. Moreover, the elongation at break and impact strength of the PLA/PPC/CD blend both show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of CD amount. When the CD amount varies within the range of 6– 8 wt%, the blends undergoes a brittle-ductile transition, and its toughness is greatly improved while the rigidity can also meet practical needs. When the amount of CD in the system increases to 12 wt%, the toughness of the blend reaches its peak, and its elongation at break and impact strength reach 513.24 % and 9211.5 J/m2 respectively (increased to 2442.84 % and 270.73 % of the PLA/PPC blend). Concurrently, the fracture surface of the blend exhibits large-scale plastic flow in the direction of the applied force, with marked shear yield phenomena, showing obvious characteristics of tough fracture. To overcome the limitations of chitosan (CS) and konjac glucomannan (KGM), the bilayer films of CS and KGM were prepared by layer-by-layer (LBL) casting method, and the effects of different mass ratios (i.e., C5: K0, C4:K1, C3:K2, C1:K1, C2:K3, C1:K4, and C0:K5) on the microstructures and physicochemical properties of bilayer films were examined to evaluate their applicability in food packaging. The results revealed that the bilayer films had uniform microstructures. When compared with pure films, the bilayer films displayed lower swelling degrees and water vapor permeability. However, the tensile tests revealed a reduction in the mechanical properties of the bilayer films, which was nonetheless superior to that of the pure KGM film. In addition, the intermolecular interactions between the CS and KGM layers were observed through FTIR and XRD analyses. Finally, TGA and DSC analyses demonstrated a decrease in the thermal stability of the bilayer films. The aim of this study was to produce new nanocomposites with antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer properties that can be used in biomedical research based on carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) biopolymer. First, poly(2-oxo-2-(pentafluorophenoxy)ethyl-2-methylprop-2-enoate) (PPFMA) was synthesized and characterized by FTIR and NMR techniques. It was then blended with NaCMC by in situ/hydrothermal method to produce a semi-synthetic functional material. Changes in the FTIR data of the blend and the single Tg value from DSC confirmed the compatibility of the blend. To enhance the thermal and biological properties of the NaCMC-PPFMA blend, biosynthesized Ag-ZnONPs were hydrothermally incorporated into the blend at different weight ratios. The prepared materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD and FTIR. The thermal stability of the materials was determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and glass transition temperatures (Tg) was determined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The oxidant, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic properties of PPFMA, Ag-ZnONPs, PPFMA-NaCMC blend, and nanocomposites were investigated in detail. The total oxidant state (TOS) value of the NaCMC-PPFMA blend, which was 0.72 μmol equivalent H 2 O 2 /L, increased to 7.2–10.4 μmol equivalent H 2 O 2 /L with the addition of Ag-ZnONPs. Ag-ZnONPs decreased total antioxidant state (TAS) levels of the nanocomposites while increasing their oxidant activity. Therefore, an increase in the antimicrobial activity of the nanocomposites was observed. Adding Ag-ZnONPs to the NaCMC-PPFMA blend increased the thermal stability by 22 °C and the Tg value by 9 °C. Finally, the potential of Ag-ZnONPs containing nanocomposites in wound healing therapies was examined. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) biocomposite films reinforced with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and biologically active tannic acid (TA) were prepared. The influence of different concentrations of CNF and TA in the PVA polymer matrix was investigated in terms of mechanical properties, thermal properties and hydrophobicity improvement of the prepared films. The results showed that in all cases the addition of CNF and TA improved the values of tensile strength and elastic modulus. The PVA film with 10 % CNF exhibited a 30 % higher tensile strength, and the three-component PVA film with 2 % CNF and 10 % TA (P2C10T) exhibited a 40 % higher tensile strength compared to the neat PVA film. The thermal properties (T g , T onset) of the PVA biocomposite films were greatly improved, with a significant effect observed for the three-component PVA films. The T g of the PVA film with 10 % CNF and 10 % TA was 87 °C, 12 °C higher than that of the neat PVA film. For three-component PVA biocomposites with 4 % and 6 % CNF and with all weight percentages of TA, the T onset shifted to a higher temperature range by about 30 °C compared to the neat PVA film. The PVA film with 2 % CNF and 10 % TA exhibited about a 20° higher contact angle than the neat PVA film. Moreover, the addition of both fillers to the PVA matrix resulted in PVA biocomposites with lower water absorption. PVA film with 10 % TA absorbed about 90 % less water and PVA film with 10 % CNF and 10 % TA absorbed about 80 % less water than the neat PVA film after the films were soaked in water for one hour. The better properties of the composite films produced are due to hydrogen and ester bonds between the components of the composite, which was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. With the aim of replacing synthetic macromolecules by biological macromolecules for advanced applications, collagen films were produced with two different ionic liquids (ILs), choline dihydrogen phosphate ([Ch][DHP]) and choline serinate ([Ch][Seri]), added in order to modulate the electrical responses. The films were prepared by casting, varying IL content between 0 and 6 wt%. The morphology and thermal properties of the resulting films were found to be independent of both IL type and content. However, the highest direct curret (d.c.) electrical conductivity (1.4 × 10−8 S·cm−1) was achieved for collagen films containing 3 wt% [Ch][DHP]. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that IL/collagen films were non-cytotoxic, with cell activity values exceeding 70 %. The development of high-strength and intrinsic flame-retardant natural fiber-reinforced green composite (NFRGC) is a landmark for high-performance structural applications. This paper reports a biobased, high-performance, flame-retardant composite material based on diverse bio-resources. Tough and strong cellulose long filaments (CLFs) are combined with vanillin-derived epoxy (VDE) resin to achieve high strength and flame-retardant NFRGC. The green composite was fabricated using a simple hand lay-up and compression molding technique. The green composite showed a noteworthy increment of 100.9 % flexural strength and 346 % flexural modulus compared to the neat VDE resin. Interestingly, despite the highly flammable nature of CLF, the green composite passes a V-0 rating under the UL-94 test, indicating excellent flame-retardant characteristics. Additionally, the green composite demonstrated outstanding hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 104.2° and good chemical stability in various acidic and organic solvents. In this study, a multi-functional guar gum aerogel with the oriented lamellar structure, which introduced sodium silicate (Na 2 O·nSiO 2) and phytic acid (PA) as thermal insulation additives and flame-retardant agents, respectively, was fabricated via freeze drying. Our aerogel's chemical structure, morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties were analyzed. The oriented lamellar structure was attributed to the orientated growth of ice crystals, which was induced by the "silicate-guar, guar-phytate, and phytate-silicate" multiple hydrogen bonds formed between Na 2 O·nSiO 2 , PA, and guar gum. The density of the sample with 2 wt% PA could reach 0.0335 g·cm−3, and the porosity was 5 %, along with a specific pore volume of 0.8144 cm3·g−1. The mechanical properties and thermal insulation performed significant differences in the radial and axial direction of the oriented lamella (nearly 100 % resilience while 50 % deformation quantity and 0.0235 W/(m*K) of thermal conductivity in the radial direction, up to 0.079 MPa of compressive strength in the axial direction). The presence of PA attached a good flame-retardant ability to our aerogel (The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) was 30.77 %). Hydrogen peroxide combined with acid treatment demonstrates its respective characteristics for the separation of lignocellulosic biomass. Herein, holocellulose was extracted from Cattail leaves (CL) by a two-step treatment with alkali and hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAA). Then carboxylated nanocellulose was hydrolyzed with a mixed organic/inorganic acid. The chemical composition of the holocellulose and the physicochemical properties of the separated carboxylated nanocellulose were comparable. Carboxyl groups were introduced on the nanocellulose as a result of the esterification process with citric acid (CA), which endows the nanocellulose with high thermal stability (315–318 °C) and good light transmission (>80 %). In this study, biodegradable films were fabricated by using cross-linked chitosan nanoparticles containing different concentrations (0, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.5 %, v/v) of Satureja hortensis essential oil (SHEO) and their physicochemical, mechanical, antimicrobial, morphological, structural and antioxidant properties were analyzed. SHEO incorporation improved antibacterial, antioxidant and thermal properties of the films. Four studied bacteria were efficiently inhibited by films loaded with SHEO. According to the FE-SEM analysis, control film had nano-sized pores while micron sized particles were present in SHEO incorporated films. Increase in color difference was well correlated with SHEO concentration. The addition of SHEO decreased elongation at break (EB) and caused an irregular fluctuation in the tensile strength (TS) values. Increase in essential oil concentration resulted in lower water solubility. The FTIR spectra of films showed evidence of interactions and molecular arrangements when SHEO was added to the polymer matrix. 3D-printing provides a feasible technique for realizing new materials into structural and intelligent parts. In this work, biomass furan-based polyesters poly (ethylene furanoate) (PEF), poly (trimethylene furanoate) (PTF), and poly (butylene furanoate) (PBF) were successfully synthesized in a 5 L reactor through the melt polycondensation process and fabricated into 3D-printing feedstocks. It was demonstrated that the three furan-based polyesters were additively-manufactured into complicated structures. Besides, the mechanical and thermal properties of furan-based polyesters could be tailored by the chain length of diol monomer. The mechanical performance of 3D-printed PEF, PTF and PBF were characterized and compared with commercial filaments. The tensile strength of PEF and PTF could reach 74.6 and 63.8 MPa respectively, which exhibited superior tensile property to poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK), polyamide (PA) and polylactic acid (PLA). Meanwhile, the compression results demonstrated that the PEF and PTF possessed comparable energy absorption capacity with PEEK and PLA respectively, which indicated excellent mechanical properties of furan-based polyesters. It was interesting to find that the 3D-printed structures including solid cube, bionic flower and lattice structures were employed to prove that the PTF possessed excellent shape memory properties. Natural polysaccharides are concerned for their high biological activity and low toxicity. Two kinds of polysaccharides were extracted from Hippophae rhamnoide L. by microwave-assisted aqueous two-phase system. Under the optimal conditions predicted by RSM model (K 2 HPO 4 /ethanol (18.93 %/28.29 %), liquid to material ratio 77 mL/g, power 625 W and temperature 61 °C), the yield of total polysaccharides reached 35.91 ± 0.76 %. Moreover, the polysaccharides extraction was well fitted to the Weibull model. After purification by Sepharose-6B, the polysaccharides from top phase (PHTP, purity of 81.44 ± 1.25 %) and bottom phase (PHBP, purity of 88.85 ± 1.40 %) were obtained.
